THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 110th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university offering over 30 majors. LMU had a Fall 2007 enrollment of 3,254 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and eleven extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR ROGER VANNOY Following the 2006-07 women’s basketball season, Roger Vannoy had served as Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s basketball coach for a quarter of a century. During that time he amassed a 453-245 record, earning a spot among the top-20 NCAA Division II active coaches of that time. A life-long native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy’s background in athletics dates back to his days as a high school coach at the former Powell Valley High School. Since that time he has coached 14 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and five All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirement from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season afforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve the institution from which he graduated in 1975. Now in his first year as athletics director, Vannoy will guide the University in its first full season of elgibility in the South Atlantic Conference. 2007-08 SEASON OUTLOOK
A new era begins as Coach Larry Just takes over the reins of the nationally prominent Lady Railsplitter basketball program. With six new players and a solid core of returning players, the future looks bright for the 2007-08 squad. Only two starters return from last season, led by senior Heather Benton (Wooton , Ky.). Last season, Benton was third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. The other returning starter is sophomore Andi Winney (Yorktown , Ind,), who was named to the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team last season. Winney led the team in rebounds and was second in scoring last season. Also returning from last year’s team are several players who played essential roles; senior Kate Fane (Sterling , Ill.); juniors Sarah Harrison (Sneedville , Tenn.) and Kelly Youhas (Mattoon, Ill.); and sophomore Whitney Vannoy (Harrogate , Tenn.). Laura Elliott (Livermore, Cal.) returns from a season-ending injury last season that sidelined her after only three games. The newcomers to this year’s team represent a mix of youth and experience. The experience comes from junior college transfer Kara Harris (Alcoa, Tenn.) from nearby Walters State and also from Shawna Nicols (Milwaukee, Wis.), who transfers in from the Big Ten’s University of Wisconsin . The youth is represented by four freshmen. Local standout Bonnie DeBusk (New Tazewell, Tenn.) makes the ten mile trip from Claiborne High to LMU this season. She will be joined by highly-recruited Stephanie Wagner (Elkhart, Ind.), who helped take Jimtown High to the state championship game. Rounding out the line-up are a pair of freshmen, Brittany Craney and Megan Davis, both of whom are from Petersburg, Indiana, and Pike Central High School. The 2007-08 schedule will present the team with some tough challenges in addition to the grueling South Atlantic Conference schedule. The season will start at the CarsonNewman Lady Eagle Tip-off Classic where the Lady Railsplitters will face Clayton State and North Georgia . Clayton State finished last season in the Division II Final Four. Also appearing on the schedule this season are future SAC foe Brevard as well as King, Virginia State , North Greenville, Oakland City and Lees McRae. Coach Just will also be feeling a little déjà-vu as he will revisit a former conference foe in St. Joseph’s. The latter half of the season will see the usual appearances by South Atlantic Conference foes including three NCAA Tournament teams from last season in Carson-Newman, Newberry and Wingate. Contests against Catawba, Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum will round out the SAC portion of the schedule.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and the weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the The Lady Railsplitters in the Turner Arena arena (handicap access is available on both levels). 1991-present -- 168-46 The arena was named after former LMU football standout 2000-01 -- 13-0 1990-91 -- 5-1* 2001-02 -- 11-2 B. MEDIA INFORMATION WELCOME
COVERING PRACTICE
This guide is designed to assist the media with their coverage of Lincoln Memorial University basketball. It is published primarily as a source of information for reporters representing newspapers, television and radio stations, wire services and magazines. If you need information that you cannot find in this guide, please contact the Sports Information Office at (423) 869-6236. We are always ready to serve you.
Practices are generally open to the public. Please contact the Sports Information Office if you wish to interview players or coaches. If you plan to cover a practice, call in advance for any changes in the schedule.
MEDIA/PHOTOGRAPHER CREDENTIALS Requests for media credentials should be made at least one week in advance. Media are requested to park at the lower Arena entrance and display some form of identification on the vehicle to avoid being ticketed. There is limited space on the floor press row that is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional space is available next to the stat table, if needed. Photography is permitted on the courtside wherever it is allowed by NCAA rules.
STATISTICAL SERVICES Statistics are provided using the STAT CREW program. Monitors will be placed along press row to provide immediate access to statistics. Hard copies of halftime stats, final stats and play-by-play will be provided following each half.
RADIO BROADCASTS Requests to broadcast must be made as soon as possible to the Sports Information Office at (423) 869-6236. A phone line is provided for the visiting team’s radio. Space is available either on press row next to the visiting bench or next to the stat table.
INTERVIEWS Interviews with Coach Larry Just, players and other athletic personnel must be arranged through the Sports Information Office. Generally, the best times for interviews are before and after practice. After games, Coach Just and players are available for interviews after a 10minute cooling-off period. Please contact the SID before the game or a member of the stat crew during the game to arrange for any postgame interviews. Priority will be given to the LMU radio and then on a first-come, first-serve basis. If requested, efforts will be made to arrange postgame interviews with visiting coaches and players. Telephone interviews with Coach Just and players are available on a “call-back” basis only and will be arranged at the most convenient time for the student-athletes and coaches.
