2011 RAILSPLITTER TENNIS SEASON OUTLOOK

THE 2011 RAILSPLITTERS

The Lincoln Memorial University men’s tennis program is coming off of one of the best seasons in school history, having won the 2010 South Atlantic Conference regular season and conference tournament titles a year ago. Last year’s team set many records but those records did not come without a price. The Railsplitters lost five starters to graduation from last year’s sqaud but have brought in six new additions. These players have a lot of tennis talent but they lack experience at the college level. This year’s team will have to work hard each day to get ready for the battle ahead. As the season gets underway, each match will help this year’s young team gain the experience they need. They will have to train, work and play to achieve the goals they have set for themselves to achieve this year.

THE 2011 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Less than a year after a banner season in which the Lady Railsplitters captured a share of the South Atlantic Conference regular season title and took the SAC Tournament Championship, the LMU women must find a way to rebound from losing four seniors to graduation and one player to a medical condition. However, four starters also return from last year’s championship squad, including First Team All South Atlantic Conference selections Sophia Lopez Mimendi and Leah Donoff.

Coach Collins is awared the SAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by SAC Director or Sports Administration and Information Dennis Switzer after winning the SAC Tournament Championship.

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH BENNY COLLINS

A native of nearby Middlesboro, Kentucky, Collins served as head coach at Middlesboro High School from the Spring 2000 until the end of Spring 2008, tallying an overall record of 153-18 with the girls program which includes five regional titles and three regional runners-up honors. With the Yellow Jacket boys program, Collins amassed a record of 109-37 during that period and was regional runner-up with the program two times. Collins took the helm of two collegiate tennis programs that made the South Atlantic Conference Tournament final four in 2008. His first season in 2008-09 was a rebuilding year for both teams as they both finished with identical 2-6 SAC records. The men were 8-12 overall while the women were 7-13. Coach Collins & his wife Debbie

The 2009-10 season saw one of the biggest turnarounds in the country as both teams captured the SAC regular season and tournament crowns. The men were 19-2, 8-0 in the SAC while the women were 18-4, 7-1 in the SAC. Collins was named SAC Coach of the Year in both sports and is only the second coach in SAC history to do so in both sports in the same season. Collins resides in Middlesboro with his wife Debbie.

STUDENT ASSISTANT COACH ANN-SOPHIE INDEHERBERGE

Ann-Sophie makes the transition from the court to the sidelines this season. after leaving her mark on the LMU tennis program from 200810. Indeherberge was named to the All-SAC squads in 2009 and 2010. In 2009 she went 14-5 at singles and 16-4 in doubles matches. Last season she was 21-1 in singles and 18-4 in doubles. Her career singles record of 35-6 places her twelfth in career wins and the .854 winning percentage ranks her third in LMU history. In doubles she ranks twelfth in wins with 34 and second in winning percentage with .810. Indeherberge will graduate this spring with a degree in Broadcast Communications.

THE 2011 RAILSPLITTERS

MARCELO ALVIN

Height: 5’10” Weight: 154 lbs. Class: Freshman Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Sao Paulo, Brazil Last School Attended: Colegio Santa Luzia

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “An incoming freshman from Brazil, Marcelo has high rankings in his home country. He is ranked number one in his state and 36th overall in the nation. As with most South Americans, he is very consistent with a lot of power in his ground strokes. His solid net game along with his big serve will make him a sure fit for one of the three doubles teams. I see Marcelo coming in to challenge for playing time at 2-3-4 singles and any of the three doubles positions.”

ANDREW BATES

Height: 5’6” Weight: 145 lbs. Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Walton, Kentucky Last School Attended: Larry A. Ryle High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Andrew is entering his senior year and is a team captain this year. He works hard in practice and leads a lot of our group conditioning drills. Andrew has steadily improved each year and will be trying to break into the top six playing positions this year. He is very quick on the court and is always in fit condition. His effort to gain a spot in the lineup will be against a young but talented team.” BATES’ COLLEGIATE RECORD SINGLES Total 2008 0-3 2009 0-0 Totals 0-3

PHILIPP HOFFMANN

Height: 5’8” Weight: 150 lbs. Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Karlsruhe, Germany Last School Attended: Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium, Karlsruhe

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “On the heels of a tremendous freshman year in which we combined with teammate Tom Goossens for an undefeated doubles regular season and a great in singles, Philipp will look to improve on his First Team All-SAC and Conference MVP honors a year ago. He has come back even stronger than last year in every aspect of his game. Last year, Philipp had one of the better serves in the conference and now it is even better. He is one of our team captains this year and he leads by example. Philipp never seems to get tired and he pushes his teammates to the limit in practice each day. He is expected to play the no. 1 singles position as well as to be a part of our no. 1 doubles lineup.”

THE 2011 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

JESSICA BAKER

Height: 5’5” Class: Freshman Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Barbourville, Kentucky Last School Attended: Knox Central High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Jessica is a true freshman from the just up the road in Kentucky. She had a stellar high school and USTA career. Jessica is an all-court player with top-notch strokes who possesses the ability to play anywhere in the line-up. She will see playing time at the 3-4-5-6 singles and 2-3 doubles positions. Jessica brings a lot of experience to the team and will be another bomb in the arsenal.”

LEAH DONOFF

Height: 5’1” Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Tipp City High, Ohio Last School Attended: Tippecanoe High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Leah had a banner freshman season last year where she was named SAC Player and Freshman of the Year as well as the ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year. She has come back this year leaner and quicker and will most likely be leading the LMU charge from the no. 1 singles position. While we have some strong newcomers it will be hard to knock her out of her no. 1 spot. She will also see playing time at the no. 1-2 doubles position. Leah’s strength is that she moves in and takes the ball so early with incredible angles that forces her opponent to react almost immediately, creating errors.” DONOFF’S COLLEGIATE RECORD

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Alexandra is another one of our incoming freshman who possesses a big game. She is strong and quick with powerful strokes. Opponents will have their hands full matching up with her all-court game. Granger has a high ranking in Canada. Her abilities should have her playing in one of the top four singles spots and she could play at 1-2 doubles as well. We are excited to have her at LMU and she will make the run for a second SAC championship very doable. ”

ABIGAIL HATMAKER

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. Enrollment is 4,445 students at the main campus in Harrogate and 11 extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

HISTORY

SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

OF THE

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.
