THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,550 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

PRESIDENT / ATHLETIC DIRECTOR B. James Dawson, Ed.D. President
Roger Vannoy Athletics Director
A native Hoosier, Dawson earned a BA and a MA at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind., and began his academic career as an admissions counselor at his alma mater. While still working at the University of Evansville, he received his doctorate in administration of higher education from Indiana University. During his tenure at the University of Evansville, Dawson held a variety of administrative positions culminating with a vice president post. In 1988 he moved on to Fort Hays State University where he served as the vice president for student and institution development. He was responsible for development, alumni relations, public relations and governmental relations at the institution, which is part of the Kansas Regents system. Dawson gained national recognition for his contributions to the field of alcohol and drug abuse prevention. As a member of the Presidents Leadership Group, he joined five other college and university presidents in a concerted effort to involve the leadership of institutions of higher education in the fight against irresponsible and illegal use of drugs and alcohol. He also serves on the national board for BACCHUS and Gamma. The BACCHUS Network is a university and community based network focusing on comprehensive health and safety initiatives. Dawson served as president of Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. from 2002 until July 2009. With Dawson at the helm, Coker College successfully completed a $23 million capital campaign. This fundraising effort enabled the college to make significant investments in the campus community, including the construction of the 40,000-square foot, $6.5 million Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library-Information Technology Center. Several millions of dollars also went to improving academic programs, residence halls and campus landscaping. Coker College also experienced considerable enrollment growth during Dawson’s presidency. Dawson served his first presidency at Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn., where he served from 1995 until 2002.
Vannoy enters his fifth season as Lincoln Memorial University’s Athletic Director. During that time, he has guided LMU’s transition from the Gulf South Conference to the South Atlantic Conference. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls’ varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. In 1982, he took over the helm of a LMU women’s basketball program that had compiled a 52-50 record over the past four seasons. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. During his 25 years he would compile a 463-246 record, which ranks him in the top 25 Division II coaches in total victories. Seven of his teams were conference champions and one would boast the highest GPA amongst NCAA women’s basketball teams that season. Twelve of his 25 teams won at least 20 games in a season, and he coached 21 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and 5 All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirment from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season aforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve his alma mater. Vannoy and his wife Pam reside in Harrogate.
Dawson joined the administration at Lincoln Memorial University in July 2009 and serves as president at the main campus in Harrogate, Tenn. He is a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International and completed the CASE institute for Advancement at Dartmouth University. Dawson and his wife, Karen, have two children and three grandchildren.

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 36th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

2011-12 SEASON OUTLOOK Hope springs eternal for the Lady Railsplitters entering the 2011-2012 season as a new era is beginning under the direction of Roger Hodge. This Lady Railsplitter team is vastly different from a season ago as it will be played out by a combination of several returners and many new faces. The Lady Railsplitters will be bolstered by a strong backcourt, led by the senior presence of Dayshalee Salaman. Salaman is coming off a season in which she led the team with 17.6 points a game as well as 3.6 assists per outing. Those numbers have earned her a spot on the Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference First Team as well as being named a Division II Bulletin Honorable Mention All-American going into the season. Amberly O’Dell is also returning for the Lady Railsplitters for her senior season. O’Dell was second on the team last season with 30 three-point field goals. She averaged 3.8 points a game in the 2010-2011 season. Junior Mariah Richardson is the final returner for the Lady Railsplitters, providing experience and at both the guard and post positions. The backcourt will be strengthened by a tremendous group of fresh faces. Junior transfer Kelsey Bradford will play a significant role at the point position as she brings knowledge and toughness to the team. The other guard spots will be a strength for LMU as several newcomers bring experience, composure and strong shooting to the roster. Redshirt freshman transfer Edina Musa will provide a huge amount of skill and size to the backcourt. Freshman Karina Weiland is another guard who will bring size and strong shooting to the Lady Railsplitter offensive attack. Division-I transfer MaRanda Boddie will contribute significantly as her 6’1” frame should wreak havoc throughout the South Atlantic Conference. Junior transfer Ralissa Nelson is also expected to perform at a high level. Newcomers Alise Samite, Jordan Shank, and Moriah Jones will add depth and experience to the backcourt. The frontcourt for the Lady Railsplitters is completely revamped, as Hodge has filled this area with tremendous size and experience. Senior Division-I transfer Lauren Cochran is expected to provide huge scoring and rebounding numbers as well as stabilizing the defense with her 6’5” frame. Junior transfer Kiso Barnett will be expected to contribute immediately on offense and on the boards. The team will face a challenging schedule that includes Division I Eastern Kentucky as well as two teams that reached the sweet 16 round of last year’s NCAA Division II Tournament in addition to the ever-tough South Atlantic Conference match-ups. With virtually an entirely new roster and a challenging schedule, the 20112012 season should be exciting with the combination of experience, depth, and talent that will bring new thrills to the Tex Turner Arena and beyond.

ROGER HODGE HEAD COACH
First season
Roger Hodge was introduced as the 15th head coach of the Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball program in April 2011. Hodge arrived in Harrogate after a two year stint as an assistant coach at East Carolina University. Prior to that he served as the head coach at Atlantic Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia, for eight seasons. He is the winningest coach in AASU program history with a 138-97 (.587) record, and he led the Lady Pirates to their first-ever Peach Belt Conference tournament championship, first-ever WBCA Division II national ranking, backto-back NCAA Division II Tournament berths and consecutive 20win seasons.

In 2007-08, Hodge led the Lady Pirates to a third 20-win campaign and a second appearance in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game as the No. 7 seed, finishing the year at 20-11. AASU also defeated at least one nationally ranked opponent in each season while he was at the helm of the program.
The 2003 season saw Hodge earn numerous honors, including Russell/WBCA South Atlantic Region Coach-of-the-Year, Atlanta Tip-off Club Naismith Division II Coach-of-the-Year, Peach Belt Conference Coach-of-the-Year and Division II Bulletin Peach Belt Conference Coach-of-the-Year. Hodge entered the collegiate coaching ranks in 1997 with Liberty University. He assisted Lady Flames Head Coach Rick Reeves with two Big South championship squads in 1997-98 and 1998-99, and helped Head Coach Carey Green in 1999-2000 when Liberty went 23-8 capturing the Big South Conference Tournament for the fourth straight year. Hodge has also served as an assistant coach at Summers County High School in Hinton, WV (1997), Mercer Christian Academy in Princeton, WV (1996) and Hinton High School in Hinton (1987-1994). MATT ACTON ASSISTANT COACH
Acton came to LMU in 2010 after two seasons at Winston-Salem State University in WinstonSalem, North Carolina. A native of Owensboro, Kentucky, Acton has a long line of experience when it comes to the game of women’s basketball. Following graduation from Western Kentucky University in 1995, he served as women’s assistant coach at Brescia College in his hometown of Owensboro, Kentucky, from 1995 to 1998. During that time, Brescia tallied a 78-19 record while making two NAIA National Tournament appearances. During the 1998-99 season, Acton moved to NCAA Division II Francis Marion University as assistant where he helped guide the team to a 27-3 record that included a Peach Belt Conference regular season title and an appearance in the 1999 NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen.”
COACHING EXPERIENCE Winston-Salem State 2008-10 Carson-Newman 2001-2008 Lander 1999-2001 Francis Marion 1998-99 Brescia 1995-98
From 1999 to 2001 he served as assistant coach at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina. During his stay at Lander, the team posted a 28-28 record while earning an NCAA National Tournament appearance in 2000. Possibly Acton’s biggest contribution came during his tenure with South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee. From 2001 to 2008, Acton helped the Lady Eagles to a 116-89 record while earning a trip to the NCAA Division II “Sweet Sixteen,” capturing one SAC Tournament Championship and finishing as tournament runner-up once and regular season runner up once. “We are very fortunate to have a person of Coach Acton’s skill and ability on our staff,” said Hodge. “His contributions to Lincoln Memorial women’s basketball are immeasurable and I am thankful to have his help. Coach Acton has immense experience in this profession and deserves great credit for his efforts in putting this team together.”
TASHA WASHINGTON ASSISTANT COACH
Washington joins her collegiate coach on the sidelines this season after a fouryear stint at Scottsdale Community College. She was a two-year starter for Hodge at Armstrong Atlantic where she helped lead the Pirates to a Peach Belt Conference title in 2003. She was named to All-PBC teams in 2003 and 2004 and was All-South Atlantic Region, Division II Bulletin Fourth-Team All-America and Daktronics All-America Honorable Mention in 2004. She is listed in the AASU career top-ten in eight different categories, and holds the school’s single-season steals record. Her jersey was retired in 2005. After college, the Texas native spent several years playing overseas in Greece PLAYING EXPERIENCE Armstrong Atlantic State 2002-04 and the Netherlands.

“Tasha Washington has every bit as much talent as a coach as she did when I coached her as a player,” said Hodge. “Considering she was an All-American during her career, that is a big statement. She is articulate, knowledgeable and an extremely hard worker. I appreciate Coach Washington’s loyalty to me as a player and now as a coach. Together with Coach Matt Acton, I feel that I have a coaching staff as good as any in the country and I am very excited about what we can achieve as a staff.”

2010-11 SEASON IN REVIEW Hopes were high heading into the 2010-11 season. Not only did LMU have depth returning for the first time in a couple of seasons, but the staff had also brought in a large recruiting class as well. But playing one of the tougher schedules since the school joined the NCAA and player attrition would end up dashing those hopes. The season started off on a good note as the Lady Railsplitters won their opening game against Southern Arkansas in Delta State’s Lloyd Clark Classic. The next night LMU would find it tough keeping up with the second-ranked Lady Statesmen of Delta State. A pair of wins over King and a win at Mount Olive were followed by conference losses to Wingate and Catawba. A win over former GSC opponent Montevallo sent the team into the Christmas break with a 5-3 record. After the holiday break the team faced back-to-back top-10 teams in Clayton State’s Classic, losing both to sixth-ranked Lander and secondranked (and eventual national champion) Clayton State. The team then hit a wall with the SAC portion of the schedule, winning only five out of the next 16 games. A senior-night victory over Lenoir-Rhyne ended the team’s season with a 10-16 record. The team was led in scoring by Dayshalee Salaman, who averaged 17.6 points per game and ranked highly in both the SAC and NCAA in scoring. Her 458 points scored were the third-most in a season in LMU’s NCAA-era. Leading the way on the boards was Patrice Talley, who averaged 6.6 rebounds a game. After a national search, Coach Roger Hodge was named the program’s 15th head coach on April 25, 2011.

The top two teams in each division went to the tournament from 1978-80 with the overall winner representing the District in the NAIA National Tournament. From 1981-86 each division had their own tournament. The outcome of that tournament would determine the seedings for the District 24 Tournament, which was made up of the top four teams from both divisions. In 1986 the VSAC was split, with the East Division becoming the TVAC and the west the TCAC. The tournament format was set up so that the first two rounds were effectively the TVAC/TCAC tournament and the winner from each conference would meet in the championship to determine the district champion. Even though LMU was not a member of the TVAC after 1989, this format allowed them to still compete in the post-season while the school made the transition to the NCAA Division II.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and the weight room are located on the lower level within easy
access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms.
The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). The arena was named after former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds for it’s construction. Work on the multi-million dollar facility began on May 7, 1988, and on February 2, 1991, the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters held their first contests in the facility when they hosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a doubleheader. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69.
LADY RAILSPLITTER HOME COURTS Prior to 1924, LMU did not have a gym. Most home games were played in Middlesboro or at Powell Valley High School.

GLADYS T. BRADLEY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL SUITE
Completed in 1991, the LMU Lady Railsplitter locker room is one of the finest facilities of it’s type at the NCAA Division II level. Officially known as the Gladys T. Bradley Women’s Basketball Suite (named for the wife of former Lady Railsplitter coach C.W. Bradley), the suite encompasses the main dressing area, office space for the assistant coaches, storage areas and a foyer that can be utilized both for meetings and as a place to study. The dressing area contains individual cubicles for 15 players, a big-screen television, restrooms, showers and direct access to the LMU Athletic Training facilities located next door. The foyer is highlighted by a large bulletin board and several other displays with that highlight award-winners, individual and team records; and banners for all LMU teams appearing in the NCAA Tournament Recent renovations to the area include new carpeting, new furniture for the foyer and offices, and changes to the dressing area that increased the locker space for each player. 2011-12 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball
