What is a Railsplitter?

LMU’s Nicknames

Lincoln Memorial University’s unique nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Railsplitters play on the road, “What is a Railsplitter?”

Lincoln Memorial University’s athletic teams have not always had the Railsplitter nickname. The early men’s teams were called the LMU Braves. That was changed during the 1924 football season when the name “Airedales” came into use. In the fall of 1931 it was decided that the name “Railsplitters” was more in the Lincoln tradition and the name has lasted to this day. The women’s teams were usually referred to as the “Lincoln Lassies” and the “Railsplitterettes” until basketball was discontinued after the 1945 season. When women’s basketball returned in 1973, they became the “Lady Railsplitters.”

The “Railsplitter” was Lincoln’s nickname as a presidential candidate in 1860. Lincoln and his cousin, Dennis Hanks, had once split 3,000 rails to be used as fences. Lincoln campaign supporters would carry banners supported by such rails. The rails symbolized the humble Western candidate with a common background.

2000-2001 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL

2000-2001 SEASON PREVIEW Bad News – Good News The bad news is that half of last year’s 18-9 Lady Railsplitter roster was lost to graduation and only five players return to this year’s team. The good news is that even though they return five players, four of them were starters last year and all five started at least five games. The bad news is that among the departing senior class was Lakeshia Salters, who became LMU’s first NCAA 1st team All-American in any sport. The good news is 2nd team All-GSC performer Karra Jackson returns and leads the team from the point. The bad news is that last year’s leading scorer (Salters – 16.6 ppg) is lost to graduation. The good news is that the next four top scorers return. (Karra Jackson – 12.6 ppg, Jennifer Childs – 8.3 ppg, Amanda Jackson – 6.8 ppg and Sara Wood – 6.6 ppg) The bad news is that last year’s top two rebounders are lost to graduation. (Salters – 10.9 rpg, Jennifer Acree – 6.0 rpg) The good news is that the recruiting class contains Hillary Ross, who finished in the Top Ten in the State of Kentucky in rebounding last year (12.1 rebounds per game). Also expected to give much needed help on the boards will be Junior College transfers Dawn Skelcher, Mindy Miller and Christy Wiseman. Sarah Crook, Jennifer Moore, Morgane Vannoy and Sarah Berry should help improve the team’s quickness and add some serious depth on the perimeter. In all the team will feature 8 new faces - the largest recruiting class for Coach Vannoy in over 15 years. Yes, there are some big shoes to fill. However, if a great team attitude and hard work account for anything, this should be another special team.

2000-2001 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH ROGER VANNOY Roger Vannoy comes into his 19th season at LMU with a lot of optimism. Last season marked his 25th season as a coach and also saw him surpass LMU and Tennessee Sports Hall-of Famer Dean Bailey’s record of 344 victories to become the all-time winningest basketball coach (men’s or women’s) in Lincoln Memorial University’s 90 years of sports history. Coach Vannoy has compiled an outstanding overall record of 478 wins and 226 losses. This leaves him only 22 wins away from another milestone of 500 career wins. During his tenure at LMU, the women’s basketball program has become a top ten program in the NCAA Division II in total victories. In that span, Coach Vannoy has produced 5 All-Americans and has already seen 5 of his players inducted into the LMU Athletes Hall of Fame. His teams have won 5 division and 14 regular-season tournament championships. They have also appeared in the Gulf South Conference Tournament four times in seven seasons of GSC competition. Most people believe that to achieve 20 wins in a season is the measure of a truly outstanding year. To date, Coach Vannoy’s teams have recorded 11 seasons of 20 or more wins. His most wins in a season is 28 and his longest winning streak is 26 games. Last seasons 12-1 start tied a school record for the best start by a basketball team. If the true measure of success is not what one takes but what one gains back, then the fact that 30 of his former players have gone into coaching speaks volumes. Roger Vannoy is married to the former Pam Johnston, who also has LMU sports ties as her father was a pitcher on the 1947 Baseball team. They are both LMU graduates. They have two daughters, Morgane (a freshman on the LMU squad) and Whitney. NCAA DIVISION II WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES BY VICTORIES

COACHING STAFF LAKESHIA SALTERS GRADUATE ASSISTANT Lakeshia moves from the playing floor to the sideline this season as she takes over the Graduate Assistant position following her stellar LMU career. In her one season at LMU, she helped turn around a squad that went 9-17 in the 1998-99 season. The 1999-2000 squad doubled their win total, going 18-9 and making an appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Salters also became LMU’s first NCAA AllAmerican when she was named to the Kodak/WBCA Division II All-American team this past spring. She is the fifth AllAmerican in Lady Railsplitter history and currently has her jersey hanging in the Women’s Basketball Hall-of-Fame in Knoxville along with other All-Americans from the 1999-2000 season. On the court, she was the leader in both scoring and rebounding her senior season, averaging 16.6 points per game and 12.9 rebounds per game. Her 294 rebounds ties her for second for most rebounds in a season with Robin Cox. At the conference level, she was ninth in scoring and fifth in rebounding last season. Her other honors include being named LMU Athlete of the Year at the annual Athletic Banquet held this past spring. A native of Startex, South Carolina, Lakeshia is the daughter of Robert and Cathy Salters and will graduate this spring with a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Her coaching duties include administrative tasks, scouting, recruiting and floor coaching. She will also handle film exchange and other tasks. NCAA DIVISION II ALL-TIME VICTORIES # School Wins 1. THE 2000-01 LADY RAILSPLITTERS KARRA JACKSON Height: 5’8” Class: Juior Position: Guard Hometown: Middlesboro, Kentucky High School: Bell County High School Set new LMU steals record last season with 8 against Valdosta State (2-7-00) and set new LMU single-season three pointers made record with 46. Also tied single-game three pointers made record with 5 at Concord (11-3-99)..... Only returning All-Conference guard in the GSC-East.... Led the team in 3-point percentage and assists.... Currently ranked 35th All-time on the scoring list with 611 points.... VANNOY’S COMMENTS: "Well on her way to becoming a 1,000 point scorer, Karra's countless hours in the gym have really paid off. With her ability to score from "downtown" or with a clever drive to the hoop, Karra can be hard to defend. She is also a solid rebounder (3rd on last years team)."

Ranked 3rd on the team in minutes played and 4th in scoring.... VANNOY’s COMMENTS: "A.J. is perhaps the most versatile player on the team. Although she can play the 1, 2, or 3 position it is the small forward spot where she will primarily play.... She is a solid ball handler and a good passer who doesn't turn the ball over. A.J. has been a three year starter and has totaled 646 career points, ranking her 25th on the all-time scoring list. She also ranks 9th all-time in made 3-pointers (38), 11th in assists (242) and 9th in free throw percentage (74.7%)”

1999-2000 SEASON REVIEW After a disappointing 9-17 season, Coach Roger Vannoy laid down a challenge to the team to do better in the 1999-2000 season. He also went out and recruited some needed inside help in the form of Lakeshia Salters and Jennifer Childs. With the nucleus of returning players including starters Amanda Jackson, Karra Jackson and Sara Wood the 1999-2000 Lady Railsplitter squad looked to have the makings of something special. After suffering a heartbreaking 92-90 overtime loss in the season opener against PittsburghJohnstown, the team exploded with 12 consecutive wins. The 12-1 start tied the LMU record for the best start in a season. It also earned the team a spot in the NCAA South Region rankings, a position they would hold for the remainder of the season. The overtime loss in the opener would be the Lady Railsplitters’ only non-conference loss of the season, which included wins over long-time rivals Tusculum College, Union College, Milligan College and the University of Virginia’s College at Wise (formerly Clinch Valley College). The 89-75 win over nationally-ranked Cal Poly-Pomona also helped garner national recognition for the Lady Railsplitters and, as it turned out, featured two Kodak/WBCA All-Americans playing against each other (LMU’s Lakeshia Salters and CPP’s Lauri McIntosh). A 10-2 home court record would help propel the team all the way to the Gulf South Conference playoffs, where they would take #1 seed Arkansas Tech to the wire before losing and ending their season at 18-9. The team once again led the GSC in Field Goal Percentage Defense (.371). It would also lead the conference in 3-point Field Goal Percentage (.383) for the first time, mainly on the backs of Karra Jackson and Sara Wood, who both finished in the LMU top ten season rankings for three pointers. The squad would finish second in Scoring Offense (75.4), Free Throw Percentage (.725) and Rebound Margin (+6.1). As these numbers attest, the 1999-2000 team was truly an outstanding one. Their year was a memorable one, especially for senior center Lakeshia Salters, who became LMU’s first NCAA AllAmerican when she was named to the WBCA/Kodak All-American Team. The 1999-2000 season will stand as a challenge to this year’s team to improve on their success.

1999-2000 seniors: (L-R) Natasha Davis, Leslie Redmond, Lakeshia Salters, Amanda Berry, Jennifer Acree

SEASON RESULTS 1926-PRESENT The women’s basketball team became an intermural team following the end of World War II. It was brought back as an intercollegiate squad in 1973-74, but played a 12-15 game schedule with walk-ons until the 1978-79 season, when they played a “full” 25+ game schedule and offered scholarships for the first time. For that reason, the 1978-79 season marks the starting point of the “Modern” Era of Lady Railsplitter basketball. 1973-74—Record: 11-3 Head Coach: Phyllis Noah Date Site W/L Score Opponent # # L # Hiwassee J 17 A W 70-47 Clinch Valley J 23 H W 61-33 Clinch Valley J 29 A W 43-35 Clinch Valley J 31 A W 48-42 Knoxville F4 H W # Clinch Valley F7 H W # King # # W # St. Mary’s # # W # Hiwassee # # W # Knoxville REGIONAL TOURNAMENT -- JEFFERSON CITY, TN F 22 N W 50-25 Milligan F 22 N L 56-76 East TN State F 22 N W 65-55 Maryville F 23 A L 42-46 Carson-Newman 1974-75—Record: 5-7 Head Coach: Phyllis Noah Date Site W/L # # L # # L # # L # # W F8 A L # # W # # W # # L # # W # # L # # L # # W

B. FRANK TURNER ARENA The Tex Turner Arena on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University is home for the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter basketball teams. Within the 87,000 square-foot, fully-equipped Tex Turner Arena, the teams find the tools to build successful programs. Constructed in 1991, the multipurpose structure houses a 5,009 seat arena (an additional 1,000 portable seats are available for concerts), a state-of-the-art training room, weight room, and locker rooms as well as the academic component of the athletic training program. The arena has drawn rave reviews from the teams, administrators, and media for the spacious and modern facilities needed for a first class, NCAA Division II Program. Ticket facilities are conveniently located on the east side of the entrance. Railsplitter head coach Jeff Tungate, Lady Railsplitter coach Roger Vannoy and their basketball staffs, occupy offices on the floor level. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels).

A continuous ring concourse encircles the building, permitting entrance to four large public restrooms, four concession areas, and ten portals leading to the arena. The playing floor level provides access to team dressing rooms, press work areas, and storage rooms. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The structure’s roof measures 76,402 square feet, which is approximately 2 acres. The facility was officially named for former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner by action of the Board of Trustees on May 10, 1989. Turner was the captain and quarterback of the football team and captain of the basketball team in the 1920’s. He served on the University’s Board of Trustees until his death. Since its opening in 1991, thousands of fans have flooded the stands for various activities. The facility is also used for concerts, graduations, conferences, and high school tournaments. Over the years, the Tex Turner Arena has seen near capacity, attracting over 4,500 people on three occasions. The arena was officially dedicated on Feb. 2, 1991, when the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter squads opened the facility with contests against future GSC foe Alabama-Hunstville. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69. The single game record for basketball was set on January 23, 1991, against Carson-Newman College when 3,218 fans witnessed a doubleheader split. The largest crowd to have ever seen an LMU basketball game was at Murray, Kentucky, in 1986, when 9,800 fans saw the Railsplitters slip past NCAA Division I foe Murray State University.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The Gulf South Conference (GSC) enters its 30th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. Our 18 universities in six southeastern states feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. As an all-sports conference, the GSC is dedicated to the promotion and practice of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. We take pride in our 32 National Team Championships in nine sports and the academic excellence of our coaches and student-athletes. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the Gulf South Conference, added Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (now Northwestern State) were admitted. Northwestern Louisiana withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members. Lincoln Memorial (199293); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96 and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Publice Affairs Michael L. Ingberg. Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Anderson and Office Manager Mary Jean Box round out the full-time staff. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Frank Franz, President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Charles Dunn (Henderson State)and Vice Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball -West Division).

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 103rd year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 undergraduate majors in four different schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing and Allied Health, and School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of 1753 graduate and undergraduate students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
