What is a Railsplitter?
LMU’s Nicknames
Lincoln Memorial University’s unique nickname for its athletics teams seems to always bring about the same question when the Railsplitters play on the road, “What is a Railsplitter?”
Lincoln Memorial University’s athletic teams have not always had the Railsplitter nickname. The early men’s teams were called the LMU Braves. That was changed during the 1924 football season when the name “Airedales” came into use. In the fall of 1931 it was decided that the name “Railsplitters” was more in the Lincoln tradition and the name has lasted to this day. The women’s teams were usually referred to as the “Lincoln Lassies” and the “Railsplitterettes” until basketball was discontinued after the 1945 season. When women’s basketball returned in 1973, they became the “Lady Railsplitters.”
The “Railsplitter” was Lincoln’s nickname as a presidential candidate in 1860. Lincoln and his cousin, Dennis Hanks, had once split 3,000 rails to be used as fences. Lincoln campaign supporters would carry banners supported by such rails. The rails symbolized the humble Western candidate with a common background.

HEAD COACH ROGER VANNOY Roger Vannoy will mark his 20th season as the head coach of the Lady Railsplitters in 2001-2002. Since taking over a program in the 1982-83 season that had posted a 52-50 record in the previous four years, he has turned LMU women’s basketball into a nationally ranked and widely regarded program at both the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. He has also put the Lady Railsplitters on the academic map as well, graduating over 90 percent of the players who finish their eligibility at LMU. The 2000-2001 squad had the highest grade point average of any women’s basketball team in the NCAA Division II with a 3.625, according to the WBCA Academic Top 25 rankings. During his tenure, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and this past season captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the first time. The 2000-2001 team also went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His number of total victories ranks him 15th among active coaches in the NCAA Division II. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. In 1982 he returned to Lincoln Memorial to take over the reins of the Lady Railsplitter program. By his third season LMU had a 20-9 record and went on to have seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The Lady Railsplitters have had two more 20-win seasons since joining the NCAA in 1991, for a total of nine. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 11624 record (82.9 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process. Coach Vannoy is a member of the LMU Professional Hall of Fame and the WBCA. Vannoy is married to the former Pam Johnston, who is also a graduate of LMU . They have two daughters, Morgane (a sophomore on the Lady Railsplitter squad) and Whitney. They reside in Harrogate. NCAA DIVISION II WINNINGESTACTIVE COACHES BY VICTORIES Coach Team 1. ASSISTANT COACHES LAKESHIA SALTERS Lakeshia moves into the assistant coach spot this season after spending a year as the graduate assistant. In her one season as a player at LMU, she helped turn around a squad that went 9-17 in the 1998-99 season. The 19992000 squad doubled their win total, going 18-9 and making an appearance in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Salters also became LMU’s first NCAA All-American when she was named to the Kodak/WBCA Division II All-American team following the 1999-2000 season. She is the fifth AllAmerican in Lady Railsplitter history and her jersey was on display last season in the Women’s Basketball Hall-of-Fame in Knoxville along with other AllAmericans from the 1999-2000 season. On the court, she was the leader in both scoring and rebounding her senior season, averaging 16.6 points per game and 12.9 rebounds per game. Her 294 rebounds ties her for second for most rebounds in a season with Robin Cox. At the conference level, she was ninth in scoring and fifth in rebounding. Her other honors include being named LMU Athlete of the Year at the annual Athletic Banquet. A native of Startex, South Carolina, Lakeshia is the daughter of Robert and Cathy Salters and graduated in the spring of 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She also currently works as a youth counselor at the Pentacostal Children’s Home in Barbourville, KY in addition to her coaching duties. Her coaching duties include administrative tasks, scouting, recruiting and floor coaching. She will also help handle film exchange and other tasks.
AMANDA JACKSON Amanda takes over the graduate assistant position this season following a stellar four-year career at LMU. Jackson finished her senior season as a Lady Railsplitter ranked 15th in scoring (958 points), ninth in assists (295), third in made three-pointers (72), third in three-point attempts (214) and eighth in threepoint percentage (35.7%). During the 2000-01 season she set the new LMU single-game three-point field goal record when she hit six against Montevallo. Jackson was a standout at nearby Bell County (KY) High School. Along with current LMU player Karra Jackson, she helped lead the Lady Bobcats to several district championships. During the 1996-97 season BCHS was ranked in the top five in the state. Her coaching duties include assisting with administrative tasks, scouting, recruiting and floor coaching. She will also handle film exchange and other tasks. Amanda graduated this past spring with a degree in education. She is a native of Pineville, KY, and currently resides in Middlesboro.

2001-2002 LADY RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL
2001-02 SEASON PREVIEW What can this year’s team do as an encore on the heels of last year’s championship team? Do they have the ability to repeat as GSC Eastern Division Champions? Can they go further and qualify for the NCAA’s? Those are some of the questions that the Lady Railsplitters are facing coming into Coach Roger Vannoy’s 20th year at the helm. There are always questions to be answered for every new year. There are very good questions to have to answer. On this test, the answers are all the same—yes; however, the real test will be in getting it done! First of all the team must match last year’s effort and maintain the same selfless attitude. EASIER SAID THAN DONE! Next, a couple of exciting new players will bring their talents to an already talented team. Meshing those talents into those of the established players must not diminish the team concept. Lastly, our returnees must keep their hunger to succeed. That was our edge last year. There is no place for complacency in the GSC! The backcourt must continue to use the strengths of seniors Karra Jackson, Ashley Cox and Sara Wood. Jackson, an All-GSC performer, must continue to lead by example and set the tone for the Lady Railsplitter offense. Add into the mix Buffy Moore and Sarah Crook and you have a deadly backcourt combination that will be hard to stop. Depth is the word this season on the inside, with Hillary Ross, Dawn Skelcher, Mindy Miller and Christy Wiseman all seeing serious playing time last season. It won’t be “Childs-play” in the paint for opposing teams as Stacey Childs joins her sister Jennifer on the Turner Arena court this season. The addition of Karmella Wynne will also make the inside a dangerous place. And don’t count out Sarah Berry, Tracey Brooks, Olivia Reynolds and Morgane Vannoy. Any one of those players can step up when needed and make a difference in a ball-game. We will face an almost exclusively NCAA-II schedule this year. Some new faces (Quincy and Regis) have been added and a couple of familiar rivalries (Carson-Newman and Bluefield State) have been re-kindled. Tusculum, Bluefield State and long-time rival Carson-Newman always remain dangerous non-conference opponents. Kentucky State makes their first appearance on the schedule since the 1993-94 season. Many of the teams in the GSC are returning the bulk of their rosters—LOOK OUT! The rivalries with West Florida and North Alabama heated up last season with last-minute losses on the road. Look for those to continue this season. Valdosta State looks to be on the verge of re-joining the GSC elite following their appearance in the GSC Tournament last year. And you always need to keep your guard up when playing Alabama-Huntsville and West Georgia, otherwise they will make you pay. Should all the pieces fall into place, this could be a team that people around the Tri-State area and beyond will be talking about for a long time to come.

2000-01 SEASON REVIEW “A Year To Remember” The Gulf South Conference Eastern Division Championship is the crowning achievement of a season filled with success in 2000-01. A 21-6 overall record produced through the strength of an undefeated 13-0 home court run, would also qualify the team as the winningest over the last decade. Their work off the court in the classroom would earn them the top spot in the WBCA Academic Top 25 NCAA Division II Poll. From the opening of practice at “midnight madness” (which saw over 1,200 people in attendance) through the last home game (with over 2,000 attending), it was a year to remember. Lone senior Amanda Jackson lived the dream of completing her home court career at Senior Night with a win to clinch the GSC Eastern Divison title and complete a magical 13-0 run at home Yet this team had eight players on it who were new to the LMU progam. The five veterans may have been small in numbers but they certainly came up big in the leadership category. This team will be remembered for having talented players throughout the roster, but there can be no doubt that the intangible ingredient to their success was the chemistry of the team. If you had a seat directly behind the team, chances were your vision was often blocked because the entire bench would jump to their feet after every good play. The 2000-01 squad averaged 74.3 points (second in the GSC) and had an average margin of victory of 12.2 points. The 142 three pointers made were the most in LMU history. In all the team would rank in the top 4 in the GSC in 10 total team statistical categories. Amanda Jackson, the lone senior, finished her LMU career with 958 career points, ranking her 15th all-time at LMU. She also finished third in three-pointers made (72) and attempted (214) and had a 42-10 home court record as a Lady Railsplitter.

B. FRANK TURNER ARENA The Tex Turner Arena is home for the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter basketball teams. Within the 87,000 square-foot, fully-equipped Tex Turner Arena, the teams find the tools to build successful programs. Constructed in 1991, the on-campus multipurpose structure houses a 5,009 seat arena (an additional 1,000 portable seats are available for concerts), a state-of-the-art training room, weight room, and locker rooms as well as the academic component of the athletic training program. The arena has drawn rave reviews from the teams, administrators, and media for the spacious and modern facilities needed for a first class, NCAA Division II Program. Ticket facilities are conveniently located on the east side of the entrance. Railsplitter Head Coach Jeff Tungate, Lady Railsplitter Coach Roger Vannoy and their basketball staffs, occupy offices on the floor level. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). A continuous ring concourse encircles the building, permitting entrance to four large public restrooms, four concession areas, and ten portals leading to the arena. The playing floor level provides access to team dressing rooms, press work areas, and storage rooms. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The structure’s roof measures 76,402 square feet, which is approximately 2 acres. The facility was officially named for former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner by action of the Board of Trustees on May 10, 1989. Turner was the captain and quarterback of the football team and captain of the basketball team in the 1920’s. He served on the University’s Board of Trustees until his death. Since its opening in 1991, thousands of fans have flooded the stands for various activities. The facility is also used for concerts, graduations, conferences, and high school tournaments. Over the years, the Tex Turner Arena has seen near capacity, attracting over 4,500 people on three occasions. The arena was officially dedicated on Feb. 2, 1991, when the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter squads opened the facility with contests against future GSC foe Alabama-Huntsville. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69. The single game record for basketball was set on January 23, 1991, against Carson-Newman College when 3,218 fans witnessed a doubleheader split. The largest crowd to have ever seen an LMU basketball game was at Murray, Kentucky, in 1986, when 9,800 fans saw the Railsplitters slip past NCAA Division I foe Murray State University.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 31st year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 18 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. As an all-sports conference, the GSC is committed to the promotion and practice of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The combination of Delta State’s Fall 2000 Football Championship and West Florida’s Spring 2001 Men’s Golf Title marked the first time since 1990-91 that two teams from the GSC won national titles in the same academic year. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael L. Ingberg, Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Anderson and Office Manager Mary Jean Box round out the fulltime staff. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Frank Franz, President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Charles Dunn (Henderson State) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 undergraduate majors in four different schools: Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts and Sciences, Carter and Moyers School of Education, Caylor School of Nursing and Allied Health, and DeBusk School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of 1774 graduate and undergraduate students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
JACK BONDURANT Athletic Director A former standout on the LMU tennis team, Mr. Bondurant became the assistant to the president for intercollegiate athletics in the summer of 1993. A 1962 graduate of LMU, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and General Business. He also serves as coach of the women’s tennis team, a position he has held for seven years. Before taking the LMU post, Bondurant was president of Bondurant Bros. Co., a wholesale electronics distributor, for many years. Since his arrival, he has hired a full cadre of graduate assistants for all sports in an effort to support all student-athletes on a more individual basis. Bondurant’s goals for LMU include contending for GSC and national championships in all thirteen sports and continuing to improve graduation rates of studentathletes. He is married to the former Donna Thompson of Harrogate. They have two grown children, Bob and Kathy, and three grandchildren. The couple resides in Knoxville.
