HEAD COACH JEFF WINTERBERGER Coach Winterberger returns for his third season as Head Coach of the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter soccer programs. Winterberger was a standout player in southwest Ohio for several seasons at Turpin High School. While on the prep level Winterberger was named First Team All-Queen City Conference three consecutive years and Queen City Conference Player of the Year in 1991. In addition he was also nominated First Team AllRegion and First Team All-State his senior year. Following high school, Winterberger attended Wright State University where he was recruited by Greg Andrulis, who is currently the Head Coach of Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. While playing for Wright State, Winterberger was named First Team All-MCC and First Team All-Midwest Region. Shortly after his collegiate career, Winterberger had the opportunity to begin a professional career in Wilmington, North Carolina, playing for the Wilmington Hammerheads. While on the professional level, Winterberger started every game his rookie season and was named to the U.S.I.S.L Team of the Week after six matches. “Playing for the Hammerheads afforded me the opportunity to play against some of the best players in that part of the United States. Many of the players in that region of the U.S.I.S.L were coming from the ACC and it was a great experience to compete against that calibre of player.” In addition to these accomplishments, Winterberger has served as Head Coach for various clubs and organizations including the Ohio South Olympic Development Program, the elite club team out of Cincinnati (Team Cincinnati) and served as the personal trainer from the Hammerheads to the local youth organizations in the area. Winterberger also serves as the Assistant Camp Director for the Ohio High School All-State Soccer Academy. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and resides in Middlesboro, Kentucky, with his wife Stacey and their two-year old daughter Jalyn. ASSISTANT COACHES
DAVID SWANEY
WINGA SIWALE
David Swaney returns to the LMU staff for his third season as an assistant for Coach Winterberger. Originally from Centerville, Ohio, Swaney arrived at Lincoln Memorial in 1995. He played four seasons under the direction of former Head Coach Mike Varga, while present head coach, Jeff Winterberger, served as his assistant coach for two of those seasons. Swaney was an All-Conference and All-Academic performer during his career as a Railsplitter and started in every match which included 80 games over his four seasons. Swaney earned his undergraduate degree in business economics from LMU in 1999. Aside from his career as a Railsplitter, Swaney played semi-pro soccer in 1998 for the Cocoa Expos, of the USISL, in Florida. He and former LMU midfielder, Eddie Escobar, helped the Expos make an appearance in the Nation’s Elite Eight, played in Des Moines, Iowa. The past two seasons, Swaney has primarily focused on the goalkeeper training, but this season will have more responsibility with the rest of the team. Swaney has been very active the past several years, working soccer camps for the area’s youth. He has done camps in Tennessee, Florida, Alabama and Ohio, as well as spending the past two years on staff with the OSYSA in southern Ohio. He has also coached at the AYSO level in Harrogate. Presently, Swaney resides in Harrogate and will receive his M.B.A. this December.
The 2001 season is Winga’s first as a part of the Lincoln Memorial University soccer coaching staff. However, he is no stranger to the program, having played for the men’s program for three years and serving as a team captain for two. Winga came to LMU in 1998 as a transfer from Division I Syracuse University where he started his freshman year. In his first season at LMU, Winga helped the Railsplitters reach the finals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament and was voted to the All-Conference Squad for his efforts. Originally from Zambia, Siwale spent much of his formative years in England where his family now makes their home in Croydon, South-London. Winga attended Millfield School in Somerset, where he won county championships in five consecutive years at under 14, under 15, under 16 and under 19 age groups. In 1991 he was a member of a high school team that won the Barclays Bank English Schools under 19 National Championship. He was also selected to Somerset All-District and All-County teams throughout his high school career. In 1996 and 1997, while on a sabbatical in England, Winga enjoyed spells at the highest level as a trials player with Crystal Palace Football Club and Woking Football Club respectively. As the Graduate Assistant Coach at Lincoln Memorial University, Winga will be pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration/ Finance, while undertaking his coaching duties.

2001 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK LADY RAILSPLITTERS LOOK FOR THE RIGHT MIX IN 2001 After losing five senior starters to graduation including four-year starter and Team MVP Andrea Goller, as well as Stacey Janetos who has since signed to play professionally in Germany, the Lady Railsplitters will look for someone to step up and establish themselves in hopes of getting back to the GSC Championship. According to Coach Winterberger, there are about five or six players who have the potential to be impact players. “We had an up and down season last fall, but we were starting five or six freshmen almost every match. I think the girls are more acquainted with each others style of play and that will reflect in our play this fall.” Senior Gretchen Dever will provide a dangerous presence up top and will be going for her third nomination to the All-South Region squad. Last season’s leading scorer Aubrei Rumbaugh, has the potential to be one of the premier forwards in the GSC if she remains fit and healthy. Also returning up top will be sophomore Emily Davis (Dunedin, Florida). With a dangerous shot and a good knowledge of the game, learning to be opportunistic could be the key to her having a great season. Newcomers Katie Fennell (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Cindy Campbell (Cape Coral, Florida) will compete immediately for starting positions as well. “We will again be a young team, but I think we will be a smarter team”, says Winterberger. All of these individuals combined could be the best forward line since Erin Alexander and Kilee Novak from the 1997 GSC Championship team. Defense: Last season we had a work in progress so to speak in that we were trying many different players at certain positions looking for the right mix. After a good spring season, many of the questions concerning who would be able to play in the back have been answered. Newcomer Katie Fennell will compete with Jen Haggerty (Hendersonville, Tennessee) for the goalkeeping responsibilities. Senior Tri-Captain Amy Ballman (Cincinnati, Ohio) will return for her final season. Amy has excellent timing and has the ability to mark players out of the game. She will be asked to play a big role this year in solidifying our defense. Sophomore Tri-Captain, Jenny Lombardo (Cape Coral, Florida), will anchor the defense at the center back position. Lombardo has shown a dramatic work rate and attitude in the off-season and is the first sophomore captain in LMU history. Joining Lombardo in the back is sophomore Zaiden Rodriguez (Cape Coral, Florida). Rodriguez and Lombardo compliment each other very well. They are both very quick and technically sound. Having Zaiden and Jenny back there gives us the option of going with three in the back, which will allow for more options and chances on the offensive end of the field. Midfield: With the absence of Janetos and three-year starter Tara Marchment in the central midfield, our interior presence will have to be rebuilt. Two-year starter and Tri-Captain Elizabeth duQuesnay (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) will be asked to play a big role this fall. Liz has the skill and demeanor to provide a confident presence in the midfield. This will be the first season that she will enter healthy and she should contribute heavily to the Lady Railsplitter’s success. Sophomore Randi Timmons (Piedmont, Oklahoma) and newcomer Cindy Campbell will compete for positions as well. Randi is a player who could make a big splash this season. She is probably the best technical player on the team and had an outstanding spring season. Junior Katy Schumann (Jefferson City, Tennessee) will compete for time in the middle as well. On the flanks will be sophomore Kate Sherwood (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Jaclyn Dombrowski (Pickerington, Ohio). Kate has the ability to play at the level needed for production on the flank and can take defenders on one -vs-one with success. Jaclyn will be asked to step into a role she is fairly familiar with. She played in 17 matches as a freshman.

# 00/21 Katie Fennell ............................................... 5’10” Freshman
Goal Keeper
Knoxville, Tennessee
Katie joins the LMU Soccer program after a successfull career at Bearden High School. Fennell was named First Team All-District three consecutive years and Second Team All- District once during her prep career at the Goalkeeper position. In addition to playing soccer at Bearden, Katie was also a member of the softball and basketball teams. “Katie is a complete athlete. Not only did she compete in three different sports in high school, but she was a standout in all of them. Her size and coordination will allow her to compete right away for the starting position in net. Katie has experience playing in the field as well, so we can utilize her skills in a variety of ways.”

Jennifer Haggerty # 1 ................................................ 5’9”
Junior
Goal Keeper
Hendersonville, Tennessee
Freshman Season: During her freshman season as a Lady Railsplitter, Jen earned experience behind former Lady Railsplitter Cindy Winterberger. While her time was limited in 1999, the LMU women made it to the GSC Championship match, where they lost in double overtime to the University of West Florida. Sophomore Season: While the Lady Railsplitters were in somewhat of a rebuilding stage last season, Haggerty started in every match recording four shutouts and capturing 83 saves enroute to the Lady Railsplitters 8-11 season record. This year Haggerty will compete with Katie Fennell for the starting role in the net. Defensively, the Lady Railsplitters will need to be extremely sound, as they are limited in their number of reserve players. Coach’s Comments: “Jen’s work ethic is one of the best on this squad. Her dedication to improvement is what sets her apart from others on the team. Jen’s experience and knowledge of the game will benefit the team, especially teammate Katie Fennell, who will join Haggerty at the goalkeeper position.”

Freshman Season: Kate came to the Lady Railsplitter program last season as a freshman. While her playing time was limited early in the season, she played in every match for the LMU women and proved to be a valuable asset to the Lady Railsplitter’s rotation. Kate saw time in a variety of positions last season. I feel we can narrow down her position to that of a flank player, but Kate also has the ability to be a tenacious defender. She will play an instrumental role in our success this season. Coach’s Comments: Kate is deceptively quick and has the ability to control the ball well at speed. Once she develops the confidence to take people on on a regular basis, she will be very dangerous.

Freshman Season: More commonly known as “Sly” to her teammates and the LMU campus community, Zaiden played in every match as a freshman and started all but one. Sly is very quick and will be asked to help out more in a defensive position this fall. Sly has the stamina and physical fitness to play 90 minutes and will be an asset in the back for us. Coach’s Comments: The thing about Sly that I like best is that she is extremely tough. There were several times last season that she was matched up against players much bigger than her but she would not back down from anyone. There is something inside her that will not allow her to give up and as a coach that is all you can ask.

Freshman Season: Scored her biggest goal of the season against G.S.C. opponent Harding University. Scored the game winning goal with less than 10 minutes left in the game. Scored 4 goals and 5 assists totaling 13 points on the season. Tied for 2nd on the team with game winning goals ( 2). “Emily has an excellent attitude and wants to learn. Coach’s Comments:
She worked very hard in the offseason addressing the areas of her game that needed attention. She has a lethal shot and is not hesitant to pull the trigger. She tallied 53 shots last season with limited time. I believe her point total will increase as the number of shots she takes increases.” Emily is the daughter of Will and B.J. Davis.

Freshman Season: Established herself as a starter from the first day of preseason. Started at sweeper in the beginning of the season and was moved into the midfield halfway through the season to provide more of an attacking presence for our team. Has the versatility to play anywhere on the field. Started in 17 of her 19 matches and gathered 3 assists. Coach’s Comments: Randi is about as tough as they come. Many of the girls she competes against are bigger than her, but she nevers comes out of a 50/50 ball without gettting the better of her opponent. She is extremely accurate with set pieces and will be asked to play a pivotal role with them this season. Randi will be playing in a variety of positions. Her first touch allows her to control the tempo of the game and I can use her speed to exploit weaknesses in other teams. She has the potential to be one of the better players in our conference and I expect her to have an outstanding career at LMU. Randi is the daughter of Tom and Deborah Timmons. Coach’s Comments: Jaclyn works as hard as anyone on the team. She has earned the respect from the coaching staff and the players with her attitude. She has improved dramatically from her freshman season and a lot of that can be contributed to her intelligence of the game. She is beginning to recognize when and where the ball needs to be played and should see increased playing time this season.

# 9 Jenny Lombardo ................................................
5’9” Sophomore Defender Cape Coral, Florida Freshman Season: Jenny established herself early on in pre-season as an impact player. Her size and quickness allow her to defend players at times with relative ease. She also combines a fierce tenacity to complement her finesse game. She started in 12 of the 19 matches. Halfway through the season, she demonstrated that she could play the center back position and it has been hers ever since. Coach’s Comments: Jenny has the talent that will allow her to accomplish her goals. She must establish a degree of poise and composure to accompany her physical ability. I will look to her this season to anchor our defense and to initiate our attack with quality services.

She is the daughter of William and Norma Campbell. Coach’s Comments: “Cindy will be a nice addition to our team this season. She has the speed and skill to step in right away and contribute. Coach’s Comments: Liz was voted captain of the team as a junior. She has the respect of the girls and the coaching staff. She has been forced to play injured for most of her 2 years. She underwent intensive therapy this past summer in hopes of returning to game form. She comes to practice with the positive attitude that you would expect from a leader. Freshman Season: As a freshman, she led our team in scoring (25 points) despite limited playing time. She scored goals against Lynn University and West Florida and established herself as a dangerous player. She tied the school record for goals in a game with four and at this pace could make a run at several of LMU’s offensive records. Coach’s Comments: Aubrei has the natural ability to beat players 1 v 1. Sometimes she is not even aware of what she is doing because she is just reacting to the balance of the defender. This is very difficult to coach and some players just have the knack for it. If Aubrei can maintain a positive work ethic and stay tough mentally, she has the potential to lead the team and conference in scoring.

Amy comes to the Lady Railsplitter program after spending last season with the LMU softball program. While attending high school more then a year ago, Amy lettered in soccer at nearby Anderson County High School. During her prep career she was named All-Region her senior year as a goalkeeper and AllDistrict her junior and senior year. Amy has a very competitive nature and will compete for playing time in the midfield postion. A big key as to how much Amy will help the Lady Railsplitters this season depends on how quickly she can make up the year of soccer she lost last season while playing softball, and how quickly she can become acquainted with the college level.

2001 RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK Railsplitters Look For Consistency & Finishing Touch In 2001 The two fundamental characteristics of the game that have prevented us from achieving our goals in the past are the ability to capitalize on our scoring chances and the mental approach that all 11 players have to defend and attack. When we have incorporated those elements on game day, we were a very tough team to beat. The main goal for the 2001 team will be to find a way to bring that brand of soccer to the field every match. Another essential element to our success this season will be finishing. I believe that of our 17 matches last season, we out shot our opponent in 14 of those matches. The problem was our execution around the box. Many of our players have been working hard in the off-season to raise their game to a new level. Although 16 of the 21 players on our team are underclassmen, I feel that last season afforded many of them the opportunity for some much-needed game experience. Defense: Two-time Co-Captain, Ben Madsen (Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin) will return in the net for his final season. Ben has done a tremendous job in the net the past couple of years. If he stays healthy, I feel he can be the best keeper in the conference. Jacob Barnard (Bybee, Tennessee) will step into the backup role for his first collegiate season. Two key losses from last season were Team MVP, Tim Diedrick and 3-year starter, Carl Guilluame. Newcomer Frank Matura (Berlin, Germany) will compete immediately for the center back position. Sophomore Leonard Jeffers (Ft Lauderdale, Florida) had a tremendous off-season and has established himself as a very capable defender. Sophomore John Bongers (Forest, Ontario, Canada) who won the starting position early in the season will be back to solidify our defense. Newcomers Silas Watkins (Knoxville, Tennessee) and Rod Solana (Hoover, Alabama) will compete for time as well. Midfield: This is where the biggest questions will be answered for our team. Last season our defending and creativity in the attack was poor from this area of the field. There could be some new faces this season in this section of the field. Returning for his final season is two-time All-Gulf South Conference selection and the 1998 GSC Tournament MVP, Edmond Bogonko (Nairobi, Kenya). Fabian Reissner (Berlin, Germany) who established himself as a starter as a freshman will be back at the defensive midfield. Newcomers Dominic Reissner (Berlin, Germany), Alexander Wendland (Seeburg, Germany) and Jon Lloyd (Covington, Kentucky) will look to make their mark as interior midfielders as well. On the flanks there will be heavy competition for playing time. Sophomores Derek Dudzik (Portage, Indiana) and Scott Day (Centerville, Ohio) will rotate from the flanks and forward positions. Dudzik and Day have good speed and creativity. I look for both of them to contribute to our attack this season. Also battling for time will be sophomore Nick Tzerefos (New Orleans, Louisiana). Nick is a very quick player and can be dangerous if his decision-making is crisp and accurate. Sophomore James Gordon has shown the most improvement in the off-season and should be a dangerous player for us on the flank. Forwards: As in the midfield, there will be a lot of questions being answered early in the season to see who can be the most productive. Our leading scorer the past two seasons is gone. The loss of David Mwendapole will force someone to pick up the slack at the forward position. Two-time senior Co-Captain, Chad Stevens (Centerville, Ohio) will provide the leadership and work ethic that will be required at the forward position. Junior Jenkins Mote (Yaounde, Cameroon) has improved his game dramatically from last year. I look for him to play a vital role in establishing a consistent attack for our team this year. Newcomer Ryan Madsen (Matthews, North Carolina) will compete for time along with
Dudzik and Day.

Sophomore Season: Nearly 100 saves in debut season for the Railpsplitters. Collected one shutout in1999. Despite being plagued with injuries for his inaugural campaign, Ben still managed to earn the ranking of fourth in LMU history for saves in a single season with 99. Junior Season: Established himself as a catalyst in a strong defense. The last
two seasons, our defense has been the strength of our team. Ben was able to execute some spectactular saves during the course of the year. Ben is a good leader and his work ethic and dedication have paved the road for his athletic success. I feel that if we can combine a dangerous attack with our defense we should be able to have the break through season we have been looking for. Coach’s Comments: Ben will break several school records this season including; matches played in a career and has the potential to become the best goalkeeper that LMU has ever had.

# 2 Scott Day .............................................. 5’10” 153 lbs.

Centerville, Ohio
Freshman Season: Scott established himself early on with his play in pre-season. His time was split between the flank position and up top. Scott played in 14 matches last season and tallied 3 goals and 2 assists for 8 points to place 6th on the team in scoring. Towards the end of Scott’s freshman season, he showed that he could handle a heavier load by creating scoring chances for himself and his teammates.
Coach’s Comments: “Scott has the potential to be a very dangerous player. The key for him will be his recognition of specific attacking situations. When he is isolated he has the ability to beat players 1-v -1. The talent that Scott needs to develop is the recognition of how and where the defense is being drawn in to him and to distribute the ball accordingly. I look for Scott to have a great year.

Silas joins the Railsplitter program after a very successfull prep career at West High School. Silas has the speed and technical ability to compete right away for time. His strength would have to be his left foot and should develop into a solid left flank or back for us. Silas recently traveled to Venezuela to help the local community in building a church. He is a well rounded young man and will be a pleasure to coach.

Frank not only has the size and speed that we need out of a center back, but he is a very intelligent player as well. I think with the personnel we have returning combined with our new players, we should have the makings for a strong defense. Jon joins the Railsplitter program after a stellar career at Bishop Brossart High School. After my initial conversation with Jon’s high school coach, I knew I had a hard worker. What I didn’t realize is that he had a true ability to find the net. In his last two seasons, Jon scored 33 goals and 13 assists in 35 games. He was named All-Conference in 1999 & 2000, All-District (1998, 99, 00). In addition, Jon was named All-Region in 1999 and 2000. I look for Jon to have an impact on our team immediately. Where he will play will depend on his transition from the speed of the high school game compared to that of college.

Freshman Season: Fabian started in all but one of the matches he played in. His composure and technical ability is beyond that of your typical incoming freshman. Fabian gave us a consistent performance every match last season. The best thing I can say about Fabian is his commitment to a high work ethic. He demands a high level from himself and as coach you love to see your players commit themselves in this manner. Coaches Comments: I look for Fabian to establish his presence more on the field this season. He has seen the college level and knows what it will take to set himself apart.

Dominic will be joining his younger brother Fabian this season and I am excited about the possibility of these two finding success together at the collegiate level. Dominic graduated from Markgrafen High School and has since been enrolled at the University of Berlin working towards an economics degree. I look for Dominic to come in right away and compete for a starting position. Dominic will bring a wealth of technical experience and intelligence on the field. I think having Fabian and Dominic on the field together will help build the chemistry that we have been looking for.

Junior Season: Scored 4 goals and 4 assists last season which tied him for second on the team. Saw time in the interior midfield as well as up top. Chad can play in a variety of positions and has the vision necessary to set people up. Played several games last season with a dislocated shoulder. I know once . Chad steps onto the field, I will not have to worry about a lack of effort. Freshman Season: In his first season as a Railsplitter, Edmond was selected 1st Team All-Gulf South Conference. In addition he was voted to the 1998 All-Gulf South Conference Tournament squad and selected as its Most Valuable Player. He also made the Panama City All-Tournament squad. At season’s end, Edmond ranked 3rd on the team in shots (43), tied for 3rd with assists (6) and tied for 3rd in the history of the conference for points in a single match with 2 goals and 3 assists
. for a total of seven. Sophomore Season: Selected 1st Team All-Gulf South Conference, ranked 2nd on the team in shots with (40) and assists (6) and 3rd on the team in points with (10). Junior Season: Hampered by injury most of the season. Edmond started 11matches and scored 12 points to tie for 2nd on the team in scoring. Coach’s Comments: Edmond has a lot of natural talent. If he can stay healthy and remain fit he will have another great year. This could be his breakout year. 1998 1999 2000 Totals

Jenkins Mote # 11 ................................................
5’10” 178 lbs. Junior Midfield/Forward Yaounde, Cameroon Freshman Season: Jenkins played in all 18 matches and scored two goals on the year. He demonstrated early that his technical ability was at a very high level. It took him a few matches to realize the style of play we were introducing as well as the intensity, but once he got the hang of it he has since turned into one of our better players. . Sophomore Season: Played in all 17 matches and scored five goals and one assist. Scored the third goal against Christian Brothers who were ranked eleventh in the country at the time. Shared time in the midfield and up top, but I think his true gift is setting people up. If we can get our attacking players to be creative in their runs, I know Jenkins will find them. Coach’s Comments: “Has matured a lot since his debut season. Jenkins is starting to assume a leadership role within the team and I feel as long as he is producing, this role will be met with enthusiasm from the other players.” MP/MS 1999 18/3 2000 17/17 Totals: 35/20

Sophomore
Defender/Midfield
Forest, Ontario
Freshman Season: John established himself early as being able to handle the demands on playing in the back at the collegiate level. After the second game of the season, he captured the starting position and never relinquished it. John’s overall strength and balance allow him to fight off certain attacking players with a bit more speed. He has also established himself as a strong presence in the air. Coach’s Comments: If John stays healthy, he will play a pivotal role in . establishing the caliber of defense I am looking for.

Sophomore Midfield/Forward Portage, Indiana
Freshman Season: Derek established himself early on in pre-season as a player who could be dangerous on the attacking end. The aspect of his game that allows him to stand out and what made him such a great high school player is his speed. He could be one of the quickest players on the roster. As a freshman, he was able to score 5 goals ( 10 points) which tied him for 4th on the team. . Coach’s Comments: Derek knows what it takes to get to the next level. I have never questioned his desire to become a better player. The key development in his game will be the knowledge of how to create space for himself and for his teammates.

Freshman Season: Nick saw time in 13 matches and gained valuable experience as to what it takes to compete at this level. Nick has a great work ethic and is deceptively quick. Nick is able to set up scoring chances for himself, but he needs to combine this attribute with the poise and composure to finish off his chances. . Coach’s Comments: Nick wants to elevate his game to a higher level and I know he has the physical talent to get himself there, but he must find a level of comfort to play within.

Freshman Season: Saw limited time at the flank position and established himself as a threat on the outside with his speed. Leonard had a tremendous spring season and proved to me that he is able to play in the back. Leonard is very difficult to beat 1 v 1 mainly because of his speed. If he incorporates some patience and effective distribution, he could be one of the better backs we have

Freshman Season: Played in all but one match as a freshman. Saw time at the flank position as well as right back. Tallied 1 goal and 1 assist for 3 points. Played his best match against Milligan College where he was matched up against a player who had played on the Kenya national team. James not only held him in check, but managed to be dangerous on the attack as well. Displayed the intelligence and poise I was looking for from him in the spring season. James will play an instrumental role on our team this season. Coach’s Comments: James attitude is excellent. He works hard and has molded his game into the traditional English mold; technically sound and direct. I look for a solid year from James.

Jacob will enter his first collegiate season this fall. He will be given the oppportunity of competing for time with current men’s goalkeeper ( Ben Madsen). Jacob played his high school soccer at Cocke County High School. Although his team missed the playoffs, Jacob gained valuable experience by anchoring the net. Jacob has the dimensions to be a solid goalkeeper. He is very strong and his hands are developing. Once Jacob masters the fundamentals, it will just be a matter of time before he will have enough confidence to be match ready.

WINTERBERGER’S SPECIAL THANKS!!! I’d like to thank the following people for helping to make the 2001 LMU Men’s and Women’s soccer season a success: I would first like to thank Mr. Chris Gibbs for his support of the program. Chris singlehandedly made it possible for us to install our new state of the art irrigation system on the game field. I know the players are very appreciative of this. I would also like to thank Mohammed El-Zaire, Will and B.J. Davis, Dale and Ladonna Dudzik, Tom and Linda Schumann, Tom and Deborah Timmons, Vance and Donna Sherwood and the Dombrowski family. I would like to thank Rich Frazee, Amanda Smith, and Jeff Baldwin for their continued efforts in keeping our players healthy. I would also like to thank Eddie Graham for allowing us to use his field equipment. A special thanks to Roger Vannoy, Jack Bondurant, Jeff Tungate, Tom Amis, and my assistants David Swaney and Winga Siwale. Another special thank you needs to go out to all the parents of our LMU players, past and present. Without their efforts and support, none of our successes would be possible. I would also like to thank my wife, Stacey, and our daughter, Jalyn, for all of their help and support. Thanks again,
Jeff Winterberger Head Coach LMU Men’s and Women’s Soccer

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 majors in four different schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing and Allied Health, and School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 1753 students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 31st year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 18 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. As an all-sports conference, the GSC is committed to the promotion and practice of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The combination of Delta State’s Fall 2000 Football Championship and West Florida’s Spring 2001 Men’s Golf Title marked the first time since 1990-91 that two teams from the GSC won national titles in the same academic year. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), TennesseeMartin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael L. Ingberg, Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Anderson and Office Manager Mary Jean Box round out the full-time staff. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Frank Franz, President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Charles Dunn (Henderson State) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
