2001 SEASON OUTLOOK Lady Railsplitters Will Rely On Youth In 2001 With only one senior, the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter volleyball team will turn to youth for the 2001 season. Krystal Yount (5’11” senior, Eldorado, Ohio) will look to lead the group and finish her career with a trip to the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament. On the outside, time will only tell for the Lady Railsplitters. Ahleasha Matthews (5’8” sophomore, Kettering, Ohio) is the only returnee on the left side. Jill Boehmer 5’9” junior, Centerville, Ohio) will be looking to tie down the right side hitter starting position. Matthews had a good freshman year averaging 1.82 kills per game and 2.64 digs, while Boehmer was a part-time starter on the right side and proved to be a solid defensive player. Jennifer Brannan (5’10” freshman, Frankfort, Indiana), Lisa Mulder (5’10” freshman, Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Erin DeRouen (5’8” freshman, Louisville, Illinois) will battle with Matthews for the left side spots. All three were named All-Conference during their high school senior season. DeRouen will mainly focus on being a defensive specialist but won’t be counted out offensively. At the setter position, the Lady Railsplitters should be pretty sound. Katie Holly (5’8” sophomore, Cincinnati, Ohio) did a fine job as a freshman last year showing that she can lead the Lady Railsplitters. Averaging 9.28 assists per game in her first season, most of the Lady Railsplitter offense should run through Holly again in 2001. Lindsey Wetherholt (5’8” freshman, Kingsport, Tennessee) will come in and gain valuable experience at setter behind Holly. Lindsey was named All-Conference in 2000. Wetherholt should push for time as the season progresses. In addition, Wetherholt could also see time as a defensive specialist before the year’s end. In the middle, the Lady Railsplitter’s only senior, Krystal Yount, will anchor the team. Yount averaged 2.42 kills, l.65 digs and 0.94 blocks per game last season, while increasing her hitting percentage to above the .300 mark for 2000. Melissa Stevens (5’11” junior, Monroe, Michigan) looks to compete for the other middle hitter spot. Newcomers Kellie Updegraff (6’0” freshman, Westerville, Ohio) and Sara Klingenberg (6’1” freshman, Tehachapi, California) will also make a bid for the middle starting position. Updegraff earned Honorable Mention All-Ohio honors in 2000 as a high school senior and Klingenberg was named MVP last season. 2001 could be looked at as somewhat of a rebuilding year for the Lady Railsplitters following three consecutive 24win seasons. With only five returning members from the 2000 squad, the biggest key for the Lady Railsplitters may prove to be how quickly they come together and execute as a team. Again, only time will tell as the Lady Railsplitters take the floor in their quest to reach the 2001 Gulf South Conference Volleyball Tournament.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH: Mike Smith A 1992 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Lady Railsplitter Head Coach Mike Smith took over the helm of the LMU volleyball program in 1994. Since that time Smith’s teams have enjoyed a combined record of 138-98, while making three trips to the Gulf South Conference Tournament. While Head Coach of LMU, Smith has coached six All-Gulf South Conference players, while also coaching two Academic All-Conference selections from the Lady Railsplitter program. Very proud of these individuals, Smith is equally proud of the high graduation rate seen by players leaving the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program. During the summer, Smith travels to various colleges and universities to work camps, helping to gain new ideas and build his coaching knowledge even further. In addition, he is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program while a student at Lincoln Memorial University. He received his Bachelors Degree in Athletic Training/Health in 1992 and his Masters Degree in Education in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Smith serves as the Athletic Business Manager for Lincoln Memorial University’s Turner Arena. He and his wife, Katy, presently reside in Harrogate and are expecting their first child.
GRADUATE ASSISTANT: Chris Parker After completing his Bachelor’s Degree from Harding University, Chris comes to Lincoln Memorial University to be part of the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program. During his stay at Harding University, Chris worked in the sports information department, as well as with the Lady Bison volleyball squad. “He will bring great knowledge of the Gulf South Conference competition and success with him”, said LMU Head Coach Mike Smith. “Chris has also coached Junior Olympic volleyball before coming to the Lady Railsplitter program. This will no doubt be of great benefit to him and to the LMU players as well.” A native of Tennessee, Parker will work towards his Masters of Business Administation in the LMU Graduate School. Chris has a very competitive nature and solid work ethic that will be a welcomed addition to the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 majors in four different schools: School of Arts and Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing and Allied Health, and School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 1753 students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 31st year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 18 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. As an all-sports conference, the GSC is committed to the promotion and practice of honor, integrity and sportsmanship. We take pride in our 34 National Team Championships in nine sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The combination of Delta State’s Fall 2000 Football Championship and West Florida’s Spring 2001 Men’s Golf Title marked the first time since 1990-91 that two teams from the GSC won national titles in the same academic year. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Assistant Commissioner for Media and Public Affairs Michael L. Ingberg, Assistant Sports Information Director Michael Anderson and Office Manager Mary Jean Box round out the full-time staff. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Frank Franz, President of the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Charles Dunn (Henderson State) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
