2003-04 SEASON OUTLOOK Can the team get back to the NCAA National Tournament? Can the team repeat as GSC Eastern Division Champions? Can the team “four-peat” with another 20-win season? These are lofty expectations for a group that wasn’t even picked to finish in the top two spots in the GSC Eastern Division last year. However, the success of last year’s team has driven expectations even higher for this year’s team. And why not? The team returns eleven letter winners, including four starters. One of the nation’s top post games returns led by senior Hillary Ross (11.9 ppg, 11.7 rpg), the school’s all-time career rebounding leader and the leading scorer and rebounder last season. Ross is the only 2002-03 First Team All-GSC East player returning this season. Junior Karmella Wynne (11.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg) is also a multi-talented player in the paint. Fellow juniors Olivia Reynolds (3.6 ppg, 2.6 rpg) and Stacey Childs (0.8 ppg, 1.0 rpg) are experienced and capable. Sophomore Katie DePersio (1.3 ppg, 0.6 rpg) is improving daily and incoming freshman Jamie Jackson (16.5 ppg, 10 rpg at Gallatin HS) is an exciting talent as well. Several talented and experienced players also return on the perimeter as well. Senior Sarah Crook (8.2 ppg, 4.6 apg), a Second-Team All-GSC player, was an outstanding leader last season. Should she fully recover from her season-ending knee injury, look for her to repeat that performance this year. Morgane Vannoy (1.2 ppg) also returns for her last year after really stepping up for the team in the playoffs last season. Sarah Berry (0.7 ppg, 0.9 rpg) is another four-year player with a solid shooting touch. Sophomore Chasity Williams (7.9 ppg, 2.0 apg) returns to concentrate on the point position. With her combination of strength and speed, she can be an explosive player. Fellow sophomore Leah Moore (7.1 ppg, 44 3FGM) returns at the shooting guard spot after leading the GSC in three point percentage as a freshman. Incoming freshman Madeline Richards (19.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg at Floyd Central HS) has a college-ready game and should give a major contribution to the team from the shooting guard position. The lone starter lost to graduation last season was at the small forward position. Three players are looking to take over that position. Sophomore Stephanie Clinton (3.1 ppg, 88.0% FT) returns after playing a key role in the success of last year’s team. Candice Rose will also be making her first collegiate appearance after missing last season due to injury. Junior transfer Mareme Konate (7.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg at Kennesaw State) is also a very talented player who should make a major contribution here. If this group of talented players is willing to sacrifice as individuals to truly become a team, then their chances to improve on last year’s success look good. 2003-04 Team Captains Hillary Ross and Sarah Crook 2003-04 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

ROGER VANNOY HEAD COACH
THE VANNOY FILE Birthdate / Birthplace: Jan. 4, 1954 / Lafollette, TN Education: Powell Valley High School Class of 1971 Lincoln Memorial University Class of 1975 Coaching Resume: Powell Valley High School 1975-82 133-58 (69.6 %) Lincoln Memorial University 1982-present 407-190 (68.1 %)
Coach Vannoy was presented with a ball autographed by the team in honor of his 400th collegiate coaching victory on Jan. 27. 2003-04 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball
1982-present
Roger Vannoy inherited a Lady Railsplitter program in 1982 that had posted a 52-50 record over the previous four seasons. The rest, as they say, is history. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The 2002-03 squad’s 21-9 record marked the 11th time in his 21 years at LMU that the Lady Railsplitters have won at least 20 games in a season. From his first game against Cumberland College on November 16, 1982 to the NCAA South Regional game against Arkansas Tech, his coaching style and recruiting savvy have brought many victories (407 overall) and exciting moments to the Lady Railsplitters and their fans. On January 27th Coach Vannoy picked up his 400th collegiate victory against defending GSC-East Champion West Alabama, a milestone he currently shares with only 12 other active Division II coaches. This makes the game against Fort Valley State on December 13 especially interesting as Vannoy is currently tied in victories with Ft. Valley Coach Lonnie Barkley. During his 21 years at the helm, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and this past season captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2000-2001 team also went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His teams have qualified for the GSC Tournament seven out of ten possible times, including the last four in a row. The seven trips ties the team with UCA for most GSC tournament trips under an active coach. The teams have succeeded on the academic court as well. Over 95 percent of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated and the 2000-01 team had the highest team GPA in the WBCA NCAA Division II rankings. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 140-28 record (83.0 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process. Coach Vannoy is a member of the LMU ProfesNCAA DIVISION II WINNINGEST ACTIVE COACHES sional Hall of Fame and the BY VICTORIES WBCA. He has also served on Coach Team Yrs. Wins the WBCA All-American 1. Jennifer moves from the basketball court to the sidelines following a stellar career as a Lady Railsplitter. “Sarah’s importance to last year’s team can be pointed out in one sentence -- when she had an off game, the team usually lost. The team further recognized her value when they voted her Co-MVP for last season. Even though her season was abruptly ended by a devastating knee injury in the last regular season home game, Sarah’s leadership continued to play a motivational role in the postseason. Possibly the biggest question to be answered for this year’s team is how fully can Sarah Crook recover.”

Coach Vannoy on Katie: Hard work and dedication in the off season have really helped Katie to appear to be one of our most improved players this year. Countless hours in the weight room have begun to pay off in much improved strength. She has also worked hard on the court to improve her shooting range. Katie has a great “team first” attitude and is always willing to do anything she can to help the team.”

Coach Vannoy on Leah: “Shooting right at 40 percent from three-point land, Leah not only led the team, but she led the entire Gulf South Conference last year as a freshman! Leah is one of three players who were named GSC Player of the Week last season. She also finished second on the team in free throw percentage at 85.7 percent. Whether starting or coming off the bench, she has the ability to light up the scoreboard.”

Coach Vannoy on Candice: “Candice transferred in to us last year after sitting out from basketball her first year in college. She then suffered a pre-season ACL injury which cost her last season as well. Now, after this two year delay, Candice appears to be anxious to begin her college career. She is one of the tallest perimeter players to ever sign with the Lady Railsplitters. Now that she has regained her mobility, Candice will just need some playing time to get back into the swing of things and gain college experience.”

While most freshmen have one area of glaring weakness, Maddie comes in pretty solid in all phases of the game. She just needs the obvious thing - experience at this level - to become an outstanding player. Look for her to challenge for immediate playing time at the shooting guard position.”

2002-03 SEASON REVIEW The Lady Railsplitter staff and squad entered the 2002-03 season with many unanswered questions. Graduation had claimed over one third of the team including all three perimeter starters. The biggest hit was the loss of four year starter and All-GSC performer Karra Jackson, who finished in the top five in career scoring and at the top of the career three-point and free throw categories. Another question was how the team would handle playing nine of their first ten games away from the friendly confines of the Turner Arena. Many of the questions were answered in the opening weekend at the Carson-Newman Lady Eagle Classic, where LMU scored impressive wins over 22nd-ranked Mars Hill (who finished the 2001-02 season in the Elite Eight) and ancient foe Carson-Newman. One of the big questions going into the season was the youth and inexperience of the team, which showed as they dropped the next three games and took a 2-3 record into their only home contest before the Christmas break. The resulting 75-53 win over Carson-Newman was the beginning of a six game winning streak. The streak continued with an impressive win over defending GSC-East Champion West Alabama on their home floor and would include three other road wins over Maryville, Tusculum and Bluefield State and a win over West Georgia at home. During this streak, the team showed the first signs of what was to come. This first streak was snapped on the road at North Alabama in early January. As the team entered the meat of the Gulf South Conference schedule, they put together two more streaks of 6 games and five games apiece to end the season with a 12-4 conference record and their second GSC Eastern Division Championship in three years. The 77-61 victory over West Alabama in the Turner Arena on January 27th was especially memorable because it was Coach Roger Vannoy’s 400th collegiate victory. The regular season ended with an impressive senior night win at home over Alabama-Huntsville which was marred by the loss of Sarah Crook for the season. The team refused to let adversity get in their way as they pulled out a close win at West Florida on three Hillary Ross free throws with no time on the clock to seal the GSC-East title. No one could have predicted the excitement that the team would create in their post-season run. In the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament the Lady Railsplitters ended Delta State’s four-year run as GSC Champions with an overtime victory. That was followed with an overtime loss to eventual South Region champion and GSC runner-up Central Arkansas. Once again, the team overcame adversity as their play in the tournament helped pursuade the NCAA Championship committee to give the Lady Railsplitters their first-ever bid to the NCAA National Tournament. After a flight out to Russellville, Arkansas, the Lady Railsplitters had to face the top-seeded host team, Arkansas Tech, in the first round. Even though they led much of the game, Tech’s experience proved to be too much for LMU and they ended the season with a 21-9 record. A season that had begun with nothing but questions would end with nothing but highlights. Highlights of the 2002-03 season 1. A three-peat 20 win season, the first since 1991. 2. GSC Eastern Division Champions for the second time in three years. 3. Fourth consecutive GSC Tournament bid and the fifth out of the last six seasons. 4. School’s first NCAA National Tournament appearance. 5. Coach Vannoy’s 400th college victory. 2003-04 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

LADY RAILSPLITTERS IN THE POSTSEASON In their 21 seasons of conference competition, Lincoln Memorial has made 18 trips to a post season conference tournament. Counting the 1989-93 seasons when LMU was not in a conference but eligible for NAIA District 24/NCAA Tournament competition, the Lady Railsplitters have been to the postseason 20 out of a possible 25 seasons. Since joining the Gulf South Conference, the Lady Railsplitters have been to the GSC Tournament 7 times in 10 seasons, reaching the championship game once. The seven trips under Coach Vannoy ties the record for most trips by an active GSC coach to the tournament with Central Arkansas’ Ron Marvel.

The top two teams in each division went to the tournament from 1978-80 with the overall winner representing the District in the NAIA National Tournament. From 198186 each division had their own tournament. The outcome of that tournament would determine the seedings for the District 24 Tournament, which was made up of the top four teams from both divisions. In 1986 the VSAC was split, with the East Division becoming the TVAC and the west the TCAC. The tournament format was set up so that the first two rounds were effectively the TVAC/ TCAC tournament and the winner from each conference would meet in the championship to determine the district champion. Even though LMU was not a member of the TVAC after 1989, this format allowed them to still compete in the post-season while the school made the transition to the NCAA Division II.

The LMU Athletes’ Hall-of-Fame was founded in 1981 and the first class of 46 was inducted during homecoming activities that year. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor those athletes that developed outstanding skills and represented LMU in a wholesome manner. The original location of the Hall of Fame display was in the Mars Gym but with the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the Hall moved to it’s current location.

In 1931, a number of colleges declared that women’s basketball was too physically demanding and suggested that schools drop the sport. Schools like LMU were increasingly forced to play local “Independent” teams, which were made up of former high school and college players, in order to be able to play ball. In more than one case, the entire opposing team were former LMU players!

The women’s basketball team became an intramural team following the 194445 season. It was brought back in 197374 as a club sport. In the 1978-79 season, LMU offered scholarships and played a “full” schedule, marking the starting point of the “modern era” of Lady Railsplitter basketball.

The Lady Railsplitters have always brought out young fans to their games. This little cheerleader, seen at a 198485 game, can still be seen on the court today in an LMU uniform. (It’s Morgane Vannoy)

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests, with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a twostory building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s tennis and softball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU athletes Hall-of-Fame, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). The arena was named after former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds for it’s construction. Work on the multi-million dollar facility began on May 7, 1988 and on Feb. 2, 1991 the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters held their first contests in the facility when they hosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a doubleheader. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in late September, 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the East Tennessee area. Howard was being transferred to the area to help relieve the Union army currently under siege at Chattanooga following the loss at the Battle of Chickamauga. The conversation turned to the area around Knoxville and Cumberland Gap, which at the time was held by Union General Ambrose Burnside. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there giving a speech about his time in Chattanooga, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 106th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 undergraduate majors in four different schools: Paul V. Hamilton School of Arts and Sciences, Carter and Moyers School of Education, Caylor School of Nursing and Allied Health, and DeBusk School of Business. LMU has a current enrollment of 2442 graduate and undergraduate students and 85 faculty members at the main campus and seven off-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 34th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. In 2003, the GSC conducted a provisional championship in women’s golf, which will continue in 2004. We take pride in our 35 National Team Championships in 10 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. Christian Brothers University joined the list of GSC National Champions last year, capturing the 2002 Women’s Soccer Championship, the league’s first in soccer. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (199394); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and part-time Assistant Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert Brown, President of Arkansas Tech University. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Frank Franz (Alabama in Huntsville) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert McChesney (Montevallo). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division) and Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division).
