HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world) begins his first season as head coach of the Lincoln Memorial University soccer programs. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College. While with the Bulldogs, D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. In addition, Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and finished ranked No. 3 in the country in 2001. “I truly believe LMU has potential to achieve a lot more,” said D’Anna. “I think the overall resources of the program, the quality of the school, and the commitment of the officers to athletics and soccer are more than enough for me to say that. I am also excited to be able to compete on the NCAA level, and look forward to participating in one of the best Division II conferences in the country, the Gulf South Conference.” D’Anna’s coaching experience isn’t limited to just Union College. Before joining Union as a graduate assistant men’s basketball coach, D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil, as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes having worked as a coach and instructor at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer. “We are extremely pleased to have Coach D’Anna accept D’ANNA’S COLLEGIATE the position as head men’s and women’s Soccer coach at RECORD Lincoln Memorial University,” said LMU Athletics Director UNION COLLEGE (Men) Jack Bondurant. “His success and experience make this an Year Record exciting time for soccer at LMU and the entire Harrogate 1995 9-11-0 area.” 1996 10-7-2 1997 15-3-1 Coach D’Anna officially began his new duties when LMU 1998 13-9-0 staff returned from the holiday break in Jaunary, and has been 1999 13-9-1 utilizing the past several months for recruiting and conditioning 2000 17-5-0 2001 16-4-2 returning players. Record First Season
ASSISTANT COACHES
PAULO NETO
CARLOS FERIANCIC
Neto begins his first season as assistant coach for the LMU soccer programs following a stellar college career. Before coming to the United States, Paulo played in the U-System of some of the best clubs in the world including Fluminense FC and SC Corinthians. He also was pre-selected to the U17 Brazilian National Team. In the USA, Neto played for Coach D’Anna at nearby Union College and served as team captain from 2000 to 2002. In addition to being named team captain, Neto was a four-year starter earning All-Conference honors each season including Conference Player of the Year his final season. His various other achievements include being named All-Region in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and All-American Honorable Mention in the same years. Paulo was an example student-athlete and was recognized twice as an NAIA All-American Scholar. He was also named the recipient of the A.O. Duer Award for the Mid-South Conference. “Paulo was one of the best players ever to play at Union College”, says Coach D’Anna. “He could have continued to play professionally for the West Michigan Edge of the PDL and I am extremely happy to have him join our staff. He will be without a doubt a star coach for the future.” Coach Neto, his wife Maria and two sons Tulio and Lucas are a welcome addition to the LMU community.
Originally from Sorocaba, Brazil, Feriancic joins the Railsplitter coaching staff with a tremendous background in soccer. In 1991 as a player, Feriancic placed third in the South American Championship with his club team ADPM Sorocaba, and placed fourth in the National Tournament. In 1993 he played for the Sao Paulo FC, the top Division I club in all of Brazil. From there he moved to the Atletico de Sorocaba FC, the second division club in Brazil and reached the quarter finals of the State Tournament. Only five years later Feriancic achieved an Amateur State Championship title while playing with the Mackenzie FC. In addition, he also won the Caribbean Cup Championship in Cancun, Mexico, and was voted the top keeper. In 1999 his Mackenzie FC team finished as runner-up in the Nationals, before earning a Sorocaba Cup Championship with Clube Laranjeiras in 2000 and 2001. For his efforts he was named the Most Valuable Player. “Carlos is an excellent addition to our staff,” says Coach Helio D’Anna. “His record and resume as a keeper speak for itself. What excites me the most is his ability to pass that on to his players. Carlos has been working with our keepers over the past spring and that has already paid off.”

ASSISTANT COACHES
CHAD STEVENS
ANA BRUNI
Coach Stevens returns in 2003 for his second and final season as assistant coach with the Railsplitters. Last season, Coach Stevens responsibilities ranged from running team workouts to field maintainence, player recruiting, and academic monitoring. Before taking over his coaching duties in 2002, Stevens was a four-year starter for the Railsplitters, playing under head coaches Mike Varga, and Jeff Winterberger. Stevens finished his collegiate soccer career at LMU tied for the all-time record in career assists, and was a two-year Captain. Chad is finishing his MBA at LMU and has expressed a desire to stay involved with soccer in the future. He is from Dayton, Ohio, an area rich in quality soccer programs. “Chad is a very important member of the coaching staff. He has great knowledge of the conference and LMU athletics. He also has a great posture as a coach and is well respected by the player,” said Coach D’Anna.
Coach Bruni joins the LMU program for her first season as graduate assistant coach with many collegiate soccer accolades. Originally from Brazil, Ana has played at top women’s club Guarani FC, one of the best programs in South America. While playing for Union College, Bruni was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2000; All-Region in 1999, 2000 and 2001; AllMid South Conference First Team in 1999 and 2001 and Second Team in 2000; All-Appalachian Athletic Conference First Team in 2002; and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in 1999, Third Team in 2001, and First Team in 2002. In addition, Bruni finished her career with the Lady Bulldogs in a first place tie for most assists in a season with 18, ranks second in Union College history in career goals with 58, first in assists with 51, and second in total points with 137. “I am very happy to have Ana join the program,” said Coach D’Anna. “She obviously was a great player in college, so she will be a great influence for our women here at LMU. She also has a personality type that instantly draws people to her, so that will be a big benefit in the recruiting process and in dealing with the players.” Coach Bruni is single and will be pursuing a masters degree while at Lincoln Memorial University.

2003 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK 2003 Lady Railsplitter Season Prospectus It is hard not to look at the upcoming season with a mixture of excitement and unanswered questions. We have been working hard to build upon an already established program. Starting with the coaching staff, the addition of Paulo Neto, Carlos Feriancic, and Ana Bruni make me feel comfortable to say our women will be in good hands. The quality of soccer knowledge and coaching skills that these individuals are bringing is beyond question. We have also done a lot of work over the summer to our facility. The resurfacing of the game field along with the construction of dugouts, back post netting system, tune up of the irrigation system and some touches on the “landscaping” make for an amazing reason to be part of the program. And that is not even half of it. We are also finishing construction of a beautiful practice field with irrigation, which will enhance a lot of our complex. We have also purchased new apparel for the team including practice gear, uniforms, travel kits, etc., straight from Brazil. At least our appearance will make quite an impression. All of the above serves just as side bar to the most important factor into the upcoming season the players. We worked extremely hard to not only bring quality players, but to teach the existing and returning ones the new system of play that we want to implement. We have a lot of talent coming back and players that are hungry to perform. They have had a couple of frustrating seasons and want to experience success. Among top returnees are sophomores Cassie Castelli, Katie Shafer, and Katie Fennell (a lot of potential and talent), junior Cindy Campbell (heart and soul of this team), and seniors Randi Timmons, Emily Davis, and Jen Lombardo (I believe they can play for any team in the country). All our signees are freshmen and bring a lot of excitement and caliber to this roster. A lot is expected from Stephanie Kwoka, Megan York, Heloisa de Oliveira, Missy McFadden, Amy Bierley, Priscilla Smith, Danielle Smith and Stefani Taylor. They will have very little room to “be freshmen” and will have to step in and produce immediately for us to be successful. Mary Mars, Emily Hickman, Ashley Collins, and Brittany Creech will represent the local area as a demonstration of how much soccer is growing. With such a small roster all players will be called upon and hopefully will report in shape for pre-season. How we will fare in the Gulf South Conference race remains to be seen. We will be a young team and that will be a factor. One thing is for sure; we are a team that will be fun to watch!

RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK
2003 Railsplitter Season Prospectus It’s hard not to look at the upcoming season with a mixture of excitement and unanswered questions. We have been working hard to establish our program as a certified conference contender. Starting with the coaching staff, the addition of Paulo Neto, Carlos Ferianciac, and Chad Stevens make me feel comfortable to say our men will be in good hands. The quality of soccer knowledge and coaching skills that these individuals are bringing is beyond question. Facility wise, we have also done a lot of work over the summer. The resurfacing of the game field along with the construction of dug-outs, back post netting systems, tune up of the irrigation system and some touches on the “landscaping” make for an amazing reason to be part of the program. And, that is not even half of it. We are also finishing construction of a beautiful practice field with irrigation, which will enhance a lot of our complex. We have also purchased new apparel for the team including practice gear, uniforms, travel kits, etc., straight from Brazil. At least on the looks we will make quite an impression. All of the above serves just as side bar to the most important factor into the upcoming season; the players. We worked extremely hard to not only bring quality players in, but to teach the existing and returning ones the new system of play that we want to implement. Although I have high expectations for all returning players, a few key aspects stand out. A lot is expected from sophomore Sean Guiseppi and junior Ibrahima Diallo. They will be very important to our success offensively. Seniors John Bongers, Scott Day, and Diego Gonzalez will have an important role in the department of leadership. Junior Silas Watkins and sophomore Paul Hammond will have a chance to grow within the new system and along with the other returning players, experience success one step at a time. A lot of talent is being brought in, with a mixture of maturity and skill. Stand out transfers include juniors David Antonelli, Marko Skuletic, and Justin Wilde. They come in with great credentials and with the responsibility that comes with age. An all-star cast of incoming freshmen includes a lot of skill. Pedro Moreira, Diogo Silvy, Suleiman Khan and others will have very little room for a honeymoon. Their adjustment to the collegiate level will be key to our success this year. There are also players who will be “growing” with the program and will have a chance to impact even this year. Chris Sparenberg, Jon Williams, Martin Dapcich, Shingo Seki, Brock Fleming, Tata Nanje, and Ervin Mucaj come to mind.

THE BRAZILIAN CONNECTION The Lincoln Memorial University soccer teams play the Brazilian style, which is a reflection of Coach Helio D’Anna’s background. The teams have a strong connection with Brazil. The Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters plan to travel to Brazil to have their pre-season training there. The idea is to go in 2004 (we are in the process of approving it with the NCAA). The teams will have a chance to play local teams, do site-seeing, and learn about the local culture as D’Anna’s team did while he was head coach at Union College. It will be a great experience for all involved. The goal is to take the teams to the city of Sorocaba (Sao Paulo State), which is close to the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Pictured below are some photos from one of Coach D’Anna’s trips to Brazil with Union College.

Coach D’Anna’s Special Thanks! Acknowledgments Any organization can only survive by the collective efforts of its team members. The more they are willing to work together with a caring attitude, the bigger are the results. I can take very little credit for any success we are experiencing now or may experience in the future. This university and this community have received me in a very special way. Many people have gone beyond their duty to pitch in. I will take the risk to mention a few names, but I know many others have contributed to give this program a nice start under my tenure. I cannot say enough about what Dr. Nancy Moody has done so far. Her “can do” attitude and willingness to go the extra mile inspires all of us to give nothing but our best to this institution. Following right behind her are many leaders on this campus in many different departments. There are many, and it is hard for me to mention all of them. That includes my bosses Jack Bondurant and Judy Beal, Rusty Peace and Bill Porter (sports information), David Laws and Mark Miracle (physical plant), Conrad Daniels and the Admissions staff, all the crew with the Finance Office (including Pat Tennyson, for putting up with me), Christy Graham and Cindy Flowers (financial aid), and our coaching staff (our coaches made me feel welcome in a hurry). My great friend Dave Nelson, along with Mack Wright and Bill Nutt, have donated uncountable man-hours to build our dug outs and other improvements on our facilities. Our local businessmen have also helped a lot. Bo Hoe has made it possible to refurbish our goals and build our netting system behind the goals. Chris Gibbs made it possible to resurface the game field. Sam Mars Jr. and Same Mars III, (father and son) were a great force behind the construction of the practice field. Mohammed El-Zare and Mike Varga were of great help in our recruiting process, particularly with our women. My very special coaching staff deserve a lot of credit. They are a hard working bunch working for an obsessive workaholic. Last but not least my wife, Debbie D’Anna, who has been taking an active role with our program. These are just a few of the people who deserve all the credit. To all of them (and to the ones I have not mentioned by name) I express my sincere appreciation. In the name of the Railsplitter and Lady Railsplitter soccer teams I dedicate this season to you.
Thanks again,
Helio D’Anna Head Coach LMU Men’s and Women’s Soccer

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 104th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 2,200 students and 70 faculty members at the main campus and eight extended-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE
HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) enters its 34th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 13 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s golf. In 2003, the GSC conducted a provisional championship in women’s golf, which will continue in 2004. We take pride in our 35 National Team Championships in 10 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. Christian Brothers University joined the list of GSC National Champions last year, capturing the 2002 Women’s Soccer Championship, the league’s first in soccer. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), TennesseeMartin and Troy State. Due to scheduling problems during the 1970-71 academic year, the only league sport was football. Jacksonville State won the league’s first championship. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), and opened an office in Hammond, LA. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and part-time Assistant Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert Brown, President of Arkansas Tech University. Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Frank Franz (Alabama in Huntsville) and Vice Chair Dr. Robert McChesney (Montevallo). The Supervisors of Officials are Billy Johnson (Football), John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division) and Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division).
