2004-05 SEASON OUTLOOK A New Look What is that girl’s name? Who is that? You might want to bring along a roster to a Lady Railsplitter game this year. There will be plenty of new faces to be found. Gone are both starting post players from the past three seasons. The departure of All-GSC performer Hillary Ross, LMU’s all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker, leaves a big void. Senior Olivia Reynolds (3.1 ppg, 2.2 rpg) and sophomore Jamie Jackson (4.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg) are the only two returning post players with any substantial game experience. Senior Stacey Childs (0.8 ppg, 0.8 rpg) and junior Katie DePersio (1.5 ppg, 1.2 rpg) are returnees who will look to take advantage of the opportunity to play. Add into the mix Kentucky All-State performer Heather Benton (Fr., Wooton, KY) and Allison Aubuchon (Jr., Lake Elmo, MN) as newcomers who should challenge for playing time. Local freshman Julie Arnold from nearby Middlesboro, KY, will add some more depth inside. Another noticable difference will be at the point position where junior Chasity Williams (6.7 ppg, 1.7 rpg) is an exceptional talent who is looking to fill the big void left by the graduation of Sarah Crook. At the shooting guard spot, GSC Eastern Division Freshman of the Year Madeline Richards (9.7 ppg, 2.5 rpg) looks to build on a freshman season that saw her not only finish second on the team in scoring but also lead the GSC in three-pointers per game. Freshman standout Ashley Trosper (LaGrange, KY) will be counted on to play at both the point and shooting guard positions. Fellow freshmen Amy LaPlace (Fremont, IN) and Damaris Young (Panama City, Panama) will add some depth at the guard spots. The small forward position has the most returning experienced players but will be even deeper with the return of senior Mareme Konate who missed the entire 2003-04 campaign with a torn ACL. Mareme is one of the most athletic and talented players on the roster who will finally get the opportunity to showcase her skills in a Lady Railsplitter uniform. She is joined by juniors Stephanie Clinton (4.9 ppg, 2.3 rpg) and Candice Rose (2.0 ppg, 18 rpg), both of whom shared the starting role last season. This team will be tested out of the gate as they play a grueling non-conference schedule highlighted by long-time local rivals Carson-Newman and Tusculum. Important NCAA South Region games against Barry and Nova Southeastern as well as Benedict and Fort Valley State, who both made the NCAA Tournament last season, will provide a much-needed warmup heading into the always tough Gulf South Conference schedule. The question is not how much impact the new faces will have this year. With possibly four new starters, the question is how successful can that impact be in maintaining the success and tradition that fans of Lady Railsplitter basketball have come to expect and enjoy.

LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF
ROGER VANNOY HEAD COACH
1982-present
Roger Vannoy inherited a Lady Railsplitter program in 1982 that had posted a 52-50 record over the previous four seasons. The rest, as they say, is history. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The 2003-04 squad’s 21-8 record marked the 12th time in his 22 years at LMU that the Lady Railsplitters have won at least 20 games in a season.
THE VANNOY FILE Birthdate / Birthplace: Jan. 4, 1954 / Lafollette, TN Education: Powell Valley High School Class of 1971 Lincoln Memorial University Class of 1975 Coaching Resume: Powell Valley High School 1975-82 133-58 (69.6 %) Lincoln Memorial University 1982-present 428-198 (68.4 %)
From his first game against Cumberland College on November 16, 1982 to the NCAA South Regional game against Arkansas Tech, his coaching style and recruiting savvy have brought many victories (428 overall) and exciting moments to the Lady Railsplitters and their fans. On January 27, 2003 Coach Vannoy picked up his 400th collegiate victory against defending GSC-East Champion West Alabama, a milestone he currently shares with only 12 other active Division II coaches. During his 22 years at the helm, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and in 2002-03 captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2000-2001 team also went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His teams have qualified for the GSC Tournament eight out of eleven possible times, including the last five in a row. The eight trips ties the team with UCA for most GSC tournament trips under an active coach. The teams have succeeded on the academic court as well. Over 95 percent of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated and the 2000-01 team had the highest team GPA in the WBCA NCAA Division II rankings. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 150-30 record (83.3 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process.
Coach Vannoy was presented with a ball autographed by the team in honor of his 400th collegiate coaching victory on Jan. 27, 2003. 2004-05 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

5-11 * Freshman * Forward * Wooton, KY * Leslie County HS PRIOR TO LMU / QUICK FACTS Five year starter for the Lady Eagles.... One of only 16 players in Kentucky high school girl’s basketball history to score more than 3,000 career points.... Named as the 14th Region Player of the Year in both The Mountain Sports Leader and The Cats’ Pause preseason previews last season.... All-District, All-Region and All-State on more than one occasion.... Named WYMT-TV Player of the Week on more than one occasion.... Broke the school record for points in a game (set by Miss Basketball Jody Sizemore) with 66 points (third most in Kentucky history) in a game against Jackson City on Feb. 17, 2004.... Four days earlier she scored 60 against district rival Buckhorn.... Against Jackson City she was two points shy of the state record for most points in a quarter with 27.... Heather probably has more playing time in the Turner Arena than most of the current Lady Railspltter sophomores due to Leslie County playing in Coach Vannoy’s team camp every year.
Coach Vannoy on Heather: “Heather comes to LMU as one of the most prolific high school scorers in the state of Kentucky. Her trademarks are her ability to run the floor and her quick release on her turnaround jump shot. She will need to improve her strength and her shot range as she will be going up against bigger people on a regular basis now.”

6-0 * Junior * Forward * McKee, KY * Jackson County HS SOPHOMORE SEASON (2003-04) Saw her playing time steadily increase after not playing for two seasons.... Earned her way into a starting spot in the last few weeks of the season.... Had one of the higher free throw percentages, shooting 78.9 percent.... Getting a reputation as a strong defensive player FRESHMAN SEASON (2002-03) Suffered an ACL injury during pre-season practice and missed season. HIGH SCHOOL / QUICK FACTS Jackson County was ranked in the USA Today Top 25 all season during Candice’s senior season.... The Lady Generals only lost one regularseason game (to an out-of-state school -- Upperman, TN) and finished the season 34-2 after losing to Lexington Catholic in the Girl’s Sweet Sixteen Quarterfinals.... Jackson County went 89-13 during Candice’s sophomore, junior and senior seasons (freshman season record unavailable).... Candice played in one of the most lopsided games in Kentucky High School history as Jackson County defeated Oneida Baptist Institute in the 1999-2000 season opener by a 109-6 score.
Coach Vannoy on Candice: “After a somewhat sluggish start, Candice came on late last season to earn a starting role in the last four games. With her outstanding size for a perimeter player she has proven to be a very effective defensive player, especially in pressure situations. Candice played a key role in several wins last year so we hope to see her pick up right where she left off last March.”

2002-03 SEASON REVIEW Four Seniors End Careers With Fourth Straight 20-win Season After a third consecutive 20-win season in 2002-03 ended with a first-ever trip by the Lady Railsplitters to the NCAA Tournament, many fans looked to the 2003-04 squad with high hopes. They were not to be disappointed. Not only did the team post a fourth consecutive 20-win season by going 21-8, they also made a record fifth straight trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament and appeared in the GSC semifinals for the second straight season. They posted a 10-2 record in the friendly confines of the Turner Arena with the only two losses being to the two teams that finished ahead of them in the conference standings. In the end, it was only a vote by the nine-member NCAA selection committee that left the Lady Railsplitters on the outside of the “NCAA bubble” and put a final end to the 2003-04 season and the careers of four special seniors. The team started off the season in style, posting an 11-2 pre-conference record with their only losses coming to a strong Fairmont State team and an ever dangerous Fort Valley State squad that would make the second round of the NCAA Tournament. One highlight that made long-time LMU fans and alumni proud was the sixth straight win over Carson-Newman in December. Entering the GSC portion of the season, the Lady Railsplitters were picked to finish the season in first place, so the bulls-eye was firmly affixed to their backs. In the end, only a resurgent West Alabama team and a strong West Florida team stood between the Lady Railsplitters and a third GSC-East title in four seasons as LMU finished the season with a 9-5 conference record and headed to Tupelo for a fifth-straight GSC Tournament appearance. The Lady Railsplitters have now made the tournament eight times in eleven seasons. The GSC Tournament run in the 2002-03 season came to an abrupt end with a highly questionable call in a thrilling overtime semifinal game against a Central Arkansas team that ended up in the Elite Eight and finished the season ranked fourth. So it is pretty safe to say that when UCA ended up facing the Lady Railsplitters in the quarterfinal round the team was ready to play. In fact, it was perhaps the finest game of the season as they not only beat the Sugar Bears, they beat them by a double-digit 62-48 margin. The next day saw LMU’s hopes of making the finals dashed in a 56-44 loss to a very strong Henderson State team that would end up making the Elite Eight. In a cruel twist of fate, Central Arkansas would end up going to the NCAA South Regional instead of the Lady Railsplitters, who finished with a 21-8 record. It was the final go-around of one of the top senior classes in LMU history as Hillary Ross, Sarah Crook, Sarah Berry and Morgane Vannoy made their final appearances wearing the Blue and Gray. Ross would finish her storied LMU career as the school’s leading rebounder and the Lady Railsplitter career leader in rebounds, blocks and free throws (made and attempted). She also became the first Lady Railsplitter (and second LMU player) to break the 1,000 point and 1,000 rebound mark, ending up with 1,220 points and 1,160 rebounds. Crook also finished out a strong career, ranking ninth in career assists and fifteenth in steals. The shadows cast by senior class of the 2003-04 Lady Railsplitters are long indeed, but their contributions to the long tradition of LMU women’s basketball will be remembered by fans of the Blue and Gray for a long time to come. As the saying goes, “When one door closes another is opened.” In this case as the door closed on the senior class a freshman was boldly kicking open the door to the future as Madeline Richards was named the GSC-East Fresh- LMU senior Hillary Ross became the 15th member of the 1,000 man of the Year, becoming only the third Lady Railsplitter to earn that distinction. point club and the only member of the 1,000 rebound club. She is now the all-time leading rebounder (men’s or women’s) in school history.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) begins its 35th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. We take pride in our 38 National Team Championships in 12 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The 2003-04 season was a banner campaign for the GSC, which claimed its first-ever National Championships in Women’s Volleyball (North Alabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida). Delta State capped it off by winning its first-ever national crown in baseball, the fifth time a GSC school has captured the Title. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), opened an office in Hammond, LA, and began championships in all men’s sports. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert McChesney (University of Montevallo). Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech University) and Vice Chair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (Ouachita Baptist University). The Supervisors of Officials are Bill Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (BasketballEast Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).

The LMU Athletes’ Hall of Fame was founded in 1981 and the first class of 46 was inducted during homecoming activities that year. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor those athletes that developed outstanding skills and represented LMU in a wholesome manner. The original location of the Hall of Fame display was in the Mars Gym but with the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the Hall moved to it’s current location.

In 1931, a number of colleges declared that women’s basketball was too physically demanding and suggested that schools drop the sport. Schools like LMU were increasingly forced to play local “Independent” teams, which were made up of former high school and college players, in order to be able to play ball. In more than one case, the entire opposing team were former LMU players!

The women’s basketball team became an intramural team following the 194445 season. It was brought back in 197374 as a club sport. In the 1978-79 season, LMU offered scholarships and played a “full” schedule, marking the starting point of the “modern era” of Lady Railsplitter basketball.

Terry Whitehead was the first LMU player to be named All-American.

* From 1978-86 the Volunteer State Athletic Conference was split into East and West Divisions. The top two teams in each division went to the tournament from 1978-80 with the overall winner representing the District in the NAIA National Tournament. From 198186 each division had their own tournament. The outcome of that tournament would determine the seedings for the District 24 Tournament, which was made up of the top four teams from both divisions. In 1986 the VSAC was split, with the East Division becoming the TVAC and the west the TCAC. The tournament format was set up so that the first two rounds were effectively the TVAC/ TCAC tournament and the winner from each conference would meet in the championship to determine the district champion. Even though LMU was not a member of the TVAC after 1989, this format allowed them to still compete in the post-season while the school made the transition to the NCAA Division II.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests, with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s tennis and softball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall-of-Fame, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, The Lady Railsplitters in the Turner Arena and east ends. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in late September, 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the East Tennessee area. Howard was being transferred to the area to help relieve the Union army currently under siege at Chattanooga following the loss at the Battle of Chickamauga. The conversation turned to the area around Knoxville and Cumberland Gap, which at the time was held by Union General Ambrose Burnside. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there giving a speech about his time in Chattanooga, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 107th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering 30 undergraduate majors in the College of Undergraduate Studies. The College of Graduate Srudies offers the master of business administration degree, the master of education degree and the educational specialist degree. LMU has a current enrollment of 2,579 students and 110 full-time faculty and 74 part-time faculty at the main campus in Harrogate and nine extended campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
Coach Vannoy and the the team would like to thank the members of Company E, 37th Virginia Volunteer Infantry for the kind donation of their uniforms to use for this year’s cover. The 37th Virginia is an organization of reenactors who travel around the country not only participating in reenactments of battles but also conducting military gravesite services for veterans of all wars and living history demonstations for students and the public. Company E is based out of Pennington Gap, VA. for more information, check out their web site at 37thvirginia_inf.tripod.com. 2004-05 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

ATHLETIC TRAINING LMU offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. LMU’s Athletic Training Education Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The major is designed to prepare entry-level athletic trainers to make appropriate decisions and important judgements regarding sudden injuries or life threatening situations. The program faculty believes that graduates must be able to communicate clearly and effectively while providing ideal health care to student athletes.
