HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world) begins his second season as head coach of the LMU soccer program on the heels of last seasons rebuilding campaign with the LMU women. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College. While with the Bulldogs, D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. In addition, Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and finished ranked No. 3 in the country in 2001. “I truly believe LMU has potential to achieve a lot more,” said D’Anna. “I think the overall resources of the program, the quality of the school, and the commitment of the officers to athletics and soccer are more than enough for me to say that. I am also excited to be able to compete on the NCAA level, and look forward to participating in one of the best Division II conferences in the country, the Gulf South Conference.” D’Anna’s coaching experience isn’t limited to just Union College. Before joining Union as a graduate assistant men’s basketball coach, D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil, as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes having worked as a coach and instructor at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer. Coach D’Anna is part of the Olympic Development Program as a coach in the state of Kentucky. He and his wife, D’ANNA’S COLLEGIATE Debbie, reside in Barbourville, Kentucky.

ASSISTANT COACHES

PAULO NETO

ANNA BRUNI

Neto enters his second year as assistant coach for the LMU soccer programs following a stellar college career. Before coming to the United States, Paulo played in the U-System of some of the best clubs in the world including Fluminense FC and SC Corinthians. He also was pre-selected to the U17 Brazilian National Team. In the USA, Neto played for Coach D’Anna at nearby Union College and served as team captain from 2000 to 2002. In addition to being named team captain, Neto was a four-year starter earning All-Conference honors each season including Conference Player of the Year his final season. His various other achievements include being named All-Region in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and All-American Honorable Mention in the same years. Paulo was an exemplary student-athlete and was recognized twice as an NAIA All-American Scholar. He was also named the recipient of the A.O. Duer Award for the Mid-South Conference. “Paulo was one of the best players ever to play at Union College”, says Coach D’Anna. “Neto proved last season he is a great coach and players respond extremely well to him,” says Helio D’Anna. “He is a tremendous asset to LMU.” Coach Neto is also part of the Olympic Develop Program as a coach in the state of Kentucky. He, his wife Maria and three sons Tulio, Lucas and Gabriel reside in Harrogate.

Coach Bruni begins her second season as graduate assistant coach for the Lady Railsplitters with many collegiate soccer accolades. Originally from Brazil, Ana has played at top women’s club Guarani FC, one of the best programs in South America. While playing for Union College, Bruni was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1999 and 2000, All-Region in 1999 and 2001, All-Mid South Conference First Team in 1999 and 2001, All-Conference Second Team in 2000, NAIA All-American Third Team in 2001, NAIA AllAmerican Honorable Mention in 1999, NAIA All-American First Team in 2002 and was named to the NAIA All-Tournament Team in 2002. In addition, Bruni finished her career with the Lady Bulldogs in a first place tie for most assists in a season with 18, ranks second in Union College history in career goals with 58, first in assists with 51, and second in total points with 167. “Ana was fundamental to the women’s program last season,” says Helio D’Anna. “She is very organized and has a lot of soccer knowledge to teach to the players.” Coach Bruni is single and is pursuing a masters degree while at Lincoln Memorial University.

ASSISTANT COACHES ROBERT MACNEILL Coach MacNeill joins the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer program in his first season as graduate assistant coach. Coach MacNeill hails from Scotland in the United Kingdom and has spent the last four years playing a major role in the soccer program at the University of Glasgow. MacNeill played his first three years at one of the strongest colleges in the United Kingdom; unfortunately, during his senior season a severe injury ended his playing career. The University of Glasgow and the Scottish Football Association guided him through levels one and two of coaching youth footballers and development activities in soccer. MacNeill spent the 2003-04 season guiding with Glasgow University U19s, along with Head Coach Raymond Farrelly to a top three finish in the West Scotland Youth Level. An accomplishment in Glasgow University’s first season competing for the championship. Playing amateur football in the west and central portions of Scotland has given MacNeill a great deal of experience at the club level as well. He is now ready and focused to bring his success and knowledge across the Atlantic and help Lincoln Memorial University become a top college program in NCAA Division II soccer. “It’s great to add Robert to the staff,” says LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “Obviously he has great credentials and comes from a different background than the rest of the coaching staff. That brings a lot to all of us, including the players.” Coach MacNeill is also the first coach to be given a scholarship in the United States through Firstpoint Scholarship Agency based in the United Kingdom.

2004 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK 2004 Lady Railsplitter Season Prospectus The year of 2004 could be a redemption year in many ways for our women. Last year we felt we were a lot better than certain results showed and we still came close to qualifying for the Gulf South Conference Tournament. Throughout the tough times, and during the spring, our women worked hard and have counted the days to this fall; now it is here. The roster is bigger and stronger, the competition for each spot is healthy and tough, and the maturity of the team is visible. Pre-season will define how well the year will go, but one thing is for sure, tremendous progress will be attained. Speaking of pre-season, that is another reason for excitement. We are looking forward to our foreign tour of Brazil this year. My previous experiences with these trips have been extremely positive as they seem to generate a great deal of team bonding and have resulted in blockbuster seasons. I guess that is another reason for high expectations this fall. Our roster this year is very eye catching and there seems to be a great balance of talent in all positions. Judging by the hard work this summer, I think our players realize the depth and urgency in fighting for the spots. Returners that have great expectations include Katie Fennell in goal (with Stephanie Kwoka on her heels), Cassie Castelli in defense and Missy McFadden, Cindy Campbell and Danielle Smith in the middle. Our best kept secret until now may be Heloisa Oliveira upfront, a red-shirt last year. All the other returners are being counted upon and will be extremelly important in such a young team. Incoming freshmen will make an impact immediately. All have the potential to break through, and a few names to keep an eye for are Lindsey Parda and Samantha Beck in defense, Patty Spielman and Kristen Boujos in the middle and Ana Lima and Danielle dos Santos upfront. All the others are noteworthy and will steal playing time right away. The transfers will bring this team to a higher level. Brianne Arsenault and Damaris Young will bring talent and experience. There are lots of reasons for anticipation, but plenty of reasons for to keep the feet on the ground. Our conference and region are number one in the nation and it will be a dog fight this year to see who makes it to the top.

2004 Memories of Brazil

24

LMU PRESEASON SOCCER

THE BRAZILIAN CONNECTION The 2004 season couldn’t have had a better start for the LMU soccer teams. This year the country of Brazil was the selected place for the pre-season training. The idea was to provide the players a unique experience in another culture where everything evolves around the sport they love and play. Players and coaching staff stayed in Sorocaba City located 80 miles away from Sao Paulo. During the week spent there, the men’s and women’s soccer teams had the opportunity to play against some of the best youth programs in the country including Guarani FC and SE Palmeiras. Besides that, the teams went through intensive training. The players also had the chance to attend a professional soccer match featuring Santos FC, currently leading the Brazilian League and ranked as one of the best clubs in the world. Santos is also the club where Pele, considered the best soccer player ever played. The Railsplitters finished the week in Brazil with a combined record of 2-5-1, which is very impressive considering the caliber and quality of the teams they played against. The trip was a bonding experience for both squads and a boost of confidence for what promises to be a year to remember.

RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK

2004 Railsplitter Prospectus It seems it has been a long time coming for our staff and players to reach the beginning of this season. However, the excitement is justified. We feel we have put together an extremely strong team to compete in the Gulf South Conference. This could possibly be the strongest team I have ever been associated with. I state that due to the quality of the players as well as the depth of the roster. Every position on the field will be contested with two or three good players and pre-season will be an especially interesting time. Speaking of pre-season, that is another reason for excitement. We are looking forward to our foreign tour of Brazil this year. It will be the first time for Lincoln Memorial University soccer and the players’ anticipation is contagious. My previous experiences with these trips have been extremely positive. Many times they have resulted in incredible team bonding and all five times have resulted in blockbuster seasons. I guess that is another reason for high expectations this fall. Also, we welcome a new member to the staff this season. Robert MacNeill starts his graduate assistanship this fall and we are glad to have him aboard. His experience as a player in Scotland as well as his coaching tenure at Glasgow University will bring great value to this program. It will also complement our Brazilian style with good old European flare. A quick look at the roster will tell the healthy predicament we have, how to choose starters. Key returners include Justin Wilde in goal, David Antonelli and Diallo Ibrahima upfront and Diogo Silvy in the middle. Among them we will have to find the leadership on the field. However, I cannot say these are the only returners to keep an eye for; All new players brought in last year are working hard this summer and I expect great things from many. Incoming freshmen will make an impact immediately. All have the potential to breakthrough, and a few names to keep an eye for are Brent Cole in goal, Marcelo Galafassi and Brendon Orlandi at the wing positions, and Frederico Moojen upfront. All the others are noteworthy and will steal playing time right away. The transfers will bring this team to a higher level. Some are even bringing more than two years of eligibility and that is a huge plus. Vitor Souza and Marcel Simo will add strength to defense. Tomy Takamune and Claudio Rico will solidify the middle and Iain Crawford will make our offense a hard task to contend with. There are lots of reasons for anticipation, but plenty of reasons to keep the feet on the ground. Our conference and region are number one in the nation in my mind and that alone will be a battle within the war this year.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 107th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 2,450 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and eight extended-campus sites around the tri-state area. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) begins its 35th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. We take pride in our 38 National Team Championships in 12 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The 2003-04 season was a banner campaign for the GSC, which claimed its first-ever National Championships in Women’s Volleyball (North Alabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida). Delta State capped it off by winning its first-ever national crown in baseball, the fifth time a GSC school has captured the Title. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), opened an office in Hammond, LA, and began championships in all men’s sports. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert McChesney (University of Montevallo). Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech University) and Vice Chair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (Ouachita Baptist University).
