2005-06 SEASON OUTLOOK Even though they lost a whopping 50 percent of the scoring and an even larger 60 percent of their rebounding from last year, the excitement and expectations remain high for the 2005-06 Lady Railsplitter basketball team. Why? Here are three reasons. One reason is that even though the team only returns six players, five of them started at least once last season. Senior Chasity Williams returns at the point where she finished fifth in the GSC in steals. Junior Madeline Richards led the team in scoring (10.8 ppg) from the shooting guard position. Senior Candice Rose averaged over five points and five rebounds a game even though she had to play in the post and out of her normal small forward position. Sophomore Heather Benton really came on late last season and was voted the Most Improved Player by her teammates. Senior Katie DePersio played some solid minutes as did sophomore Amy LaPlace. The second reason for the anticipation of a strong team is an outstanding eight player recruiting class. Among those eight players are six junior college transfers who not only bring talent but much needed college experience. Of these six, five were named all-conference, four were named all-region and one was named third team NJCAA All-American. Point guard Kelsi Salas (Jr., Rock Falls, IL; All-Arrowhead Conference and All-Region IV) brings leadership and outstanding passing ability. Kate Fane (So., Sterling, IL; All-Arrowhead Conference, All-Region IV and Region IV All-Tournament) is a very physical and aggressive guard with a knack for scoring. Wisemane Alcema (Jr., West Palm Beach, FL; All-FCCAA) will no doubt be one of the top athletes on the team. She is an outstanding defender who can really take the ball to the basket. In the post, juniors Latoya Johnson (Miami, FL) and Sierra Golden (Rockford, IL) were both all-conference and all-region players. Sidney Johnson (Jr., Cincinnati, OH) is also an outstanding talent and will really bring a physical presence to the position. The two freshmen are local standout Sarah Harrison (Sneedville, TN) from nearby Hancock County High School and Kelly Youhas of Mattoon, Illinois. Sarah will be converting to the perimeter after playing the post position in high school. Kelly is an outstanding shooter with easy threepoint range. Unfortunately her contributions will be closely linked to her recovery from an ACL injury suffered last spring. The last reason for optimism is the tradition of LMU Women’s Basketball. The 2004-05 season ended a six season streak of Gulf South Conference Tournament appearances and a streak of 20-win seasons dating back to the year 2000. Based on these reasons, is it any wonder that the Lady Railsplitter Nation feels that the team is determined to get back on the path to excellence?

LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF

ROGER VANNOY HEAD COACH

1982-present

Roger Vannoy inherited a Lady Railsplitter program in 1982 that had posted a 52-50 record over the previous four seasons. The rest, as they say, is history. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. The 2003-04 squad’s 21-8 record marked the 12th time in his 22 years at LMU that the Lady Railsplitters have won at least 20 games in a season.

THE VANNOY FILE Birthdate / Birthplace: Jan. 4, 1954 / Lafollette, TN Education: Powell Valley High School Class of 1971 Lincoln Memorial University Class of 1975 Coaching Resume: Powell Valley High School 1975-82 133-58 (69.6 %) Lincoln Memorial University 1982-present 442-211 (67.7%)

From his first game against Cumberland College on November 16, 1982, to the 2004-05 win at West Georgia in the season finale, his coaching style and recruiting savvy have brought many victories (442 overall) and exciting moments to the Lady Railsplitters and their fans. On January 27, 2003 Coach Vannoy picked up his 400th collegiate victory against defending GSC-East Champion West Alabama, a milestone he currently shares with only 19 other active Division II coaches. During his 23 years at the helm, the Lady Railsplitters have won three straight TVAC titles, five straight NAIA District 24 East championships and in 2002-03 captured the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2000-2001 team went undefeated in the Turner Arena for the first time, the second squad in modern LMU history to go undefeated at home in a season. His teams have qualified for the GSC Tournament eight out of eleven possible times, including five in a row from 1999-2004. The eight trips leads the GSC for most GSC tournament trips under an active coach. The teams have succeeded on the academic court as well. Over 95 percent of his players who completed their eligibility have graduated and the 2000-01 team had the highest team GPA in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II rankings. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls’ varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. Since moving into the Turner Arena in 1991 the Lady Railsplitters have been formidable at home, posting a 150-30 record (83.3 percent) in the Arena, defeating national powerhouses such as Delta State, Valdosta State, Fort Valley State and Cal Poly-Pomona in the process.

Coach Vannoy was presented with a ball autographed by the team in honor of his 400th collegiate coaching victory on Jan. 27, 2003. 2005-06 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

2005-06 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

Sarah returns to the sidelines for another season as the graduate assistant. During her four year career as a Lady Railsplitter, Crook scored 543 points and dished out 350 assists from the point guard position. The 350 assists put her at ninth alltime on the LMU career assist list. She is also twelfth on the career three-pointers list with 48. In her last season Crook also tied the single-game steals record with eight steals against Concord on November 22, 2003. The London, KY, native came to LMU following an outstanding career on both the hardwood and the softball diamond at North Laurel High School. On the court she was named All-District and AllRegion while averaging 11 points per game. As a softball player, Crook was All-District, All-Region, All-American and a Miss Softball finalist in the 1999-2000 season. She helped lead the Lady Jags to four district and region titles and an appearance in the state championship game her senior season. Crook graduated from LMU in 2004 with a B.S. in chemistry and her future plans are to go into coaching. She currently resides in Harrogate. 5

Second on the team in assists (59) and steals (42).... Third on the team in three point percentage.... Her 26 made threes tie her for second-place in three-pointers by a freshman with Celine Cloutier (1994-95) and places her thirteenth in three-pointers made in a season.

Coach Vannoy on Chasity: “Chasity returns for her final season after starting in 24 of 27 games in 2004-05 and was also voted team captain for the second straight year. By always giving a 100 percent effort, Chasity has earned the respect of her teammates and the coaching staff. She has excellent quickness and probably pound for pound is the strongest player on the team. We are looking for Chasity to improve her shooting percentage and to take a little better care of the ball. By combining all her experience and her ability, she should have no problem doing both.”

HIGH SCHOOL / QUICK FACTS Jackson County was ranked in the USA Today Top 25 all season during Candice’s senior season.... Jackson County went 89-13 during Candice’s sophomore, junior and senior seasons (freshman season record unavailable).

Coach Vannoy on Kelly: “Recovering from knee surgery, Kelly’s contribution this year will be closely linked to that progress. She is a very good face-up shooter with easy three-point range. She also has the size to be a legitimate shot blocker on the defensive end. As she improves her post-up game and gets healthy, she could be a mid-season shot in the arm for the team.”

2002-03 SEASON REVIEW “Highs and Lows” is the phrase which best describes the 2004-05 Lady Railsplitter basketball season. While the team only compiled a 1413 overall record, there were several exciting moments. Among the victories would be wins over two teams ranked among the NCAA Division II Top 25. The team defeated the Gulf South Conference Eastern Division champion and also recorded wins over four of the five teams which qualified for the Gulf South Conference tournament. Inconsistency and injury plagued the team and resulted in the 2004-05 squad missing out on a fifth consecutive 20-win season and a sixth consecutive GSC tournament appearance. The team led the GSC in three point shooting percentage as they shot a school record 37.4 percent from downtown. It also led the GSC in offensive rebounding and finished in the top five of six other statistical categories. However, the combination of a high turnover rate and a low shooting percentage would eventually spoil the Lady ‘Splitters’ chances of achieving their ultimate goals.

THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) begins its 36th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. We take pride in our 38 National Team Championships in 12 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The 2003-04 season was a banner campaign for the GSC, which claimed its first-ever National Championships in Women’s Volleyball (North Alabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida). Delta State capped it off by winning its first-ever national crown in baseball, the fifth time a GSC school has captured the Title. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), opened an office in Hammond, LA, and began championships in all men’s sports. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (199495); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert McChesney (University of Montevallo). Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech University) and Vice Chair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (Ouachita Baptist University). The Supervisors of Officials are Bill Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (BasketballEast Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).

The LMU Athletes’ Hall of Fame was founded in 1981 and the first class of 46 was inducted during homecoming activities that year. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor those athletes that developed outstanding skills and represented LMU in a wholesome manner. The original location of the Hall of Fame display was in the Mars Gym but with the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the Hall moved to it’s current location.

In 1931, a number of colleges declared that women’s basketball was too physically demanding and suggested that schools drop the sport. Schools like LMU were increasingly forced to play local “Independent” teams, which were made up of former high school and college players, in order to be able to play ball. In more than one case, the entire opposing team were former LMU players!

* From 1978-86 the Volunteer State Athletic Conference was split into East and West Divisions. The top two teams in each division went to the tournament from 1978-80 with the overall winner representing the District in the NAIA National Tournament. From 198186 each division had their own tournament. The outcome of that tournament would determine the seedings for the District 24 Tournament, which was made up of the top four teams from both divisions. In 1986 the VSAC was split, with the East Division becoming the TVAC and the west the TCAC. The tournament format was set up so that the first two rounds were effectively the TVAC/ TCAC tournament and the winner from each conference would meet in the championship to determine the district champion. Even though LMU was not a member of the TVAC after 1989, this format allowed them to still compete in the post-season while the school made the transition to the NCAA Division II.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, men’s and women’s golf, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, The Lady Railsplitters in the Turner Arena and east ends. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in late September, 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the East Tennessee area. Howard was being transferred to the area to help relieve the Union army currently under siege at Chattanooga following the loss at the Battle of Chickamauga. The conversation turned to the area around Knoxville and Cumberland Gap, which at the time was held by Union General Ambrose Burnside. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there giving a speech about his time in Chattanooga, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its second century of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 undergraduate majors and programs of studyas well as the master of business administration degree, the master of education degree and the educational specialist degree. LMU has a also operates ten extended campus sites in addition to the main campus in Harrogate. The Harrogate campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

LADY RAILSPLITTER FACTOID What do the Lady Railsplitters and the Kentucky men’s basketball team have in common? They both have a tie game in their all-time win-loss record. Fourteen NCAA schools have an official tie on record. The women have six teams at the Division II level and four at the Division II level with ties while the men have two teams apiece at the Division I and II levels. 2005-06 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball
