HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world) begins his third season as head coach of the LMU soccer program on the heels of last season’s banner year and the best season in school history. In 2004 the Railsplitters captured the GSC regular season title and were ranked among the top four teams in the Region the entire year. For several weeks, they also appeared in the top-25 of Division II programs in the nation. As for the Lady Railsplitters, they also captured the GSC regular season title, and advanced to the national tournament for the first time ever. The Lady Railsplitters won the NCAA South Region title en route to an appearance in the quarter finals of the national championship (Elite Eight). As a result, Coach D’Anna was named the NCAA South Region Coach of the Year. “As exciting as 2004 was, I saw nothing but hunger in the players’ eyes this past off-season,” said D’Anna. “The players feel they can improve in too many areas before feeling that they capped their potential. It’s fair to say the future is bright for these two programs.” A product of São Paulo, Brazil, before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College. While with the Bulldogs, D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. In addition, Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match and finished ranked No. 3 in the country in 2001. Before joining Union College, D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil, as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes having worked as a coach and instructor at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-toback world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer. D’Anna now possesses an overall winning record of 136-89-14 in his collegiate career as a head coach (117-73-12 with the men and 19-16-2 with the women). Coach D’Anna is part of the Olympic Development Program as a coach in the state of Kentucky. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Barbourville, Kentucky. ASSISTANT COACHES MATT AKINS A new addition to the Lincoln Memorial University soccer staff this season is Matt Akins, a native of Lisbon, New York, and graduate of LeMoyne College. Akins enters the LMU soccer program following the departure of former assistant coach Paulo Neto, who resigned this summer to take the head men’s soccer coaching position at nearby Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Following four years of collegiate soccer and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from LeMoyne College, an NCAA Division II institution in Syracuse, New York, Akins worked as an assistant soccer coach at the University of Kentucky where he also received his master’s degree in sports management. While with the Wildcats his responsibilities included assisting with individual and team daily workouts, monitoring the academic progress of the soccer athletes and various other daily duties. “It’s great adding Matt to the family,” says Coach D’Anna. “He is a hard worker, a student of the game and someone who is eager to produce. I know the players will benefit from his coaching skills, his experience and his willingness to sacrifice for them. It’s a nice final touch to the staff and someone who brings a lot to the table.” Akins additional coaching experience includes working with the Bluegrass Soccer Club in Versailles, Kentucky, and with the Olympic Development Program in the state of Kentucky. As a collegiate athlete, Akins competed in the Northeast-10 Conference from 1998 to 2001, one of the strongest leagues in the nation. He has also traveled throughout England competing against various clubs and was a member of the Adirondack men’s open soccer team in the 2000 Empire State Games.

ROBERT MACNEILL Coach MacNeill will begin his second season with the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer program as graduate assistant coach as he studies for his MBA. Coach MacNeill hails from Scotland in the United Kingdom, and spent four years playing a major role in the soccer program at the University of Glasgow. MacNeill played his first three years at one of the strongest colleges in the United Kingdom; unfortunately, during his senior season; a severe injury ended his playing career. The University of Glasgow and the Scottish Football Association guided him through his youth qualifications in soccer. He has also completed and gained his youth D license with the USSF, obtaining national status. MacNeill spent the 2003-04 season guiding Glasgow University U19s, along with Head Coach Raymond Farrelly, to a top three finish in the West Scotland Youth level, an accomplishment in Glasgow University’s first season competing for the championship. Playing amateur soccer in the west and central portions of Scotland has given MacNeill a great deal of experience at the club level as well. Coach MacNeill has helped the program both by developing players as well as finding talent from the United Kingdom. He is also the first coach to be given a scholarship in the United States through Firstpoint Scholarship Agency based in the United Kingdom. “Bob is now a veteran coach and knows the ins and outs of the men’s soccer program,” stated Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “He spent the summer doing clinics in Scotland and is ready and excited to start another great season.”

ASSISTANT COACHES CAMILA MOURA New graduate assistant Camila Moura is a native of Campo Limpo Paulista, Brazil, and follows the footsteps of Ana Bruni who finished her tenure at LMU this past fall. Moura played soccer at and attended the University of Campinas, Brazil, where she received a bachelor’s degree in physical education. She recently coached soccer at the University of Campinas as well as Guarani Football Club, one of the premiere women’s soccer clubs in Brazil. She also works for Datafolha, the official statistics compiling company for the professional soccer teams in Brazil. “CP” as Camila is known, is expected to pursue a masters degree in education at Lincoln Memorial University. The nickname comes from the abbreviation of her hometown. “It’s exciting to be bringing a new graduate assistant to work with the ladies,” said D’Anna. “Ana Bruni did such a great job and has left a strong mark with the program, and CP will be able to step right in and be a part of a very special team. I know the players will relate very well to her. CP is a very intelligent and dedicated young lady, and we are thrilled to have her.” Moura also has a strong background in Futsal which is the international version of Indoor Soccer. She has played the sport in all levels including for clubs such as Parmalat Jundiai FC and Internacional FC from Campo Limpo Paulista.

2005 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK How does a team follow up the best season in school history? How do players respond after winning the GSC regular season championship, the NCAA South Region title, and an Elite Eight national tournamennt appearance? These are the questions to be answered in 2005 by the Lady Railsplitters. One thing is for sure: no one is resting on their past accomplishments. “All the players have worked very hard this summer,” said Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “The majority of the players are back and the incoming class is outstanding.” On the defensive end of the field, the Lady Railsplitters will have plenty of options with a great deal of strength, experience and a good mixture of athleticism and skill. Cassie Castelli, Lindsey Parda, and

Missy McFadden return, along with Samantha Beck, Lauren Korte and Stefani Taylor. It should be no problem for these players to find a good chemistry. In the middle is where the Lady Railsplitters could perhaps be the deepest. Brianne Arsenault and Patty Spielman are back and will have help from returner Damaris Young and newcomers Juliana Povoa, Hanna-Mari Toivonen and Camilla Verissimo. Rounding out the middle will be Megan Rasnick. The midfielders will be strong, fast, athletic and very versatile, and that will allow for a number of combinations and formations. They will also have a defensive punch and will work hard on both ends of the field. Offensively, there will be scoring power to spare. The stellar returning cast of Heloisa de Oliveira and Kristen Boujos will combine with Danielle dos Santos to provide a triple threat. Katie Shafer will also add depth at the forward position. In goal, the solid and reliable Stephanie Kwoka welcomes Courtney Hollis to the job of keeping the ball out of the net. Their task will be heightened by a very difficult schedule; however, they will have the assurance of an excellent team to share that load. As accomplished as the 2004 team was, just about every starting position on the field will be contested and the healthy internal competition will keep all players working hard. Also, a team once called young now reaches a more mature status. That is an important ingredient as leadership will always be a factor in making the season, a banner one. So, let the questions be answered! 7

THE 2004 NCAA SOUTH REGION CHAMPION LADY RAILSPLITTERS On November 13, 2004, the Lincoln Memorial University Lady Railsplitter soccer team became the University’s first team ever to capture an NCAA Division II Region title. Having earned victories over Barry University in the opening round and the University of Tampa in the regional championship, the LMU women eventually advanced to the Elite Eight before bringing to a close one of the program’s most successful seasons with a 12-5-2 record. Despite losing to in-state rival Carson-Newman College in the NCAA Quarterfinals, the Lady Railsplitters finished the season ranked eighth nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and return a solid foundation to defend their regional title in 2005. Among some of the top returners will be All-Gulf South Conference First Team and 2004 GSC Freshman of the Year, Heloisa de Oliveira. The 5’8” product of Campinas, Brazil led the GSC in goals and ranked fourth by season’s end in goals scored (27). Also returning will be 2004 Second Team All-GSC performers, Cassie Castelli and Kristin Boujos. Touted as one of the top defenders in the nation by Head Coach Helio D’Anna, Castelli will be one of only three seniors on this year’s squad and will be looked at as a team leader while anchoring the Lady Railsplitter defense. Boujos returns for her sophomore season following a stellar freshman campaign in which she ranked second on the team in goals scored (17), second in the Gulf South Conference, and tied for twenty-second nationally. Having lost only two seniors, three starters and five lettermen from the 2004 squad, the 2005 Lady Railsplitters could be the most experienced LMU women’s soccer team since the 1997 Gulf South Conference Champion Lady Railsplitters. All speculation aside, one thing is certain, the Lincoln Memorial women are the reigning NCAA South Region Champions, and there are many teams out there eager for a chance of putting a blemish on the champs face in 2005. This is a new season and a new schedule. Despite returning most of the starting lineup from a year ago, the questions that remain unanswered however are, will the Lady Railsplitters fall to the pressure that comes along with success, or has a monster been unleashed in Harrogate? It’s time to find out! 8

Courtney Hollis # 1 ................................................ HEIGHT: 5’4” POSITION: Goalkeeper CLASS: Freshman HOMETOWN: Fort Myers, Florida MAJOR: English PARENTS: Rick & Kathy Hollis COACH’S COMMENTS: “Courtney will start her college career the right way under a solid veteran keeper and with not much pressure on her. This way, she will develop and become ready to continue the good tradition we have with our keepers here at LMU. Courtney has the right attitude and tools to accomplish just that.”

LADY RAILSPLITTER FACTOID Since the programs inception in 1996, the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer team has had only three goalkeepers to earn All-Gulf South Conference status. Ellen Husarik - All-GSC First Team (1996 & 97), Cindy Winterberger - All GSC Second Team (1999), and Katie Fennell - All-GSC Second Team (2003).

COACH’S COMMENTS: “Very few people in the conference are not familier with Brianne as she begins her second season. She is an athletic and gifted player who can play either side of the field, as well as a number of positions in the middle. I think Brianne had a great year in 2004, but her best is yet to come. Her pace, shot and crossing skills will be showcased this year.”

COACH’S COMMENTS: “Camilla is the kind of player that does all the little things that make a great team. Her possession skills are impeccable, and she plays simple but is totally capable of playmaking. Her distribution and ability to serve long balls will be fundamental to us this season. Camilla should also do very well defending the middle and the back.”

Hanna-Mari Toivonen # 8 .............................................. HEIGHT: 5’3” POSITION: Defender/Midfielder CLASS: Freshman HOMETOWN: Tampere, Finland MAJOR: Undecided PARENTS: Kirsti Toivonen

COACH’S COMMENTS: “Hanna will add a different dimension to the team. She is a strong and physical player, but she also has great finess. That trait will help us in matching up with similar players in our region. Her touch and ball control are spotless, and she can strike and pass long and short with either foot. She is an exciting addition to the roster.” LADY RAILSPLITTER FACTOID Did you know former Lady Railsplitter four-year starter Jammi McLead is one of only two players in the history of the Gulf South Conference to earn All-GSC honors in all four consecutive years of their collegiate soccer careers?

# 9 Danielle Dos Santos ................................................ HEIGHT: 5’7” POSITION: Forward CLASS: Freshman HOMETOWN: Campinas, Brazil MAJOR: Kinesiology & Business PARENTS: Daniel & Valdeci COACH’S COMMENTS: “Since coming to LMU last fall, Danielle has already made our team better. She was a nightmare to mark in practice last year as a redshirt. She made all our defenders work hard to contain her, and this season she will do it against our opponents. Danielle has pace as well as quickness and is extremely skilled. She will add a great deal to our offensive threat.”

LADY RAILSPLITTER FACTOID Did you know, among the institutions in the Gulf South Conference that have women’s soccer, the Lady Railsplitter soccer program has had the most GSC All-Academic Team honorees (19)?

What is even more exciting is that she worked very hard in the spring and improved even more. Patty is an error-free player who almost never makes a bad pass or a turnover. She can also defend very well and can sneak up and score on the opponent anytime, they don’t respect her skills.”

2005 RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK

One of the interesting facts about the 2004 season is that at the end, the players felt that they had underaccomplished. “Considering the team won the GSC regular season crown, was ranked among the top three teams in the region most of the year and finished with only three losses, I believe all these things are a very clear indicator of how hungry our players were,” said Railsplitter Head Coach Helio D’Anna “They really felt they should have done better and that is a great attitude going into 2005.” Combine those factors with the return of the main core of the team this season and all things considered, this could be the strongest recruiting class in recent memory. It would be easy for one to expect big things from this year’s squad. Every position carries depth on this season’s roster with very strong internal competition for each starting position. The team is going to be athletically, talented and mature. The players are also very focused with an intent to exceed last season’s success.

Defensively, the Railsplitters return a lot of talent and experience with Vitor Souza, Marko Skuletic and Marcel Simo. Gavin MacLeod will contend for a starting spot, and Roberto Medina will provide depth in the backfield. The defense will be athletic, aggressive and extremely skilled with an ability to destroy as well as posess from the back. In the middle, a stellar lineup is highlighted by the return of Claudio Rico, Diogo Silvy, Nelson Pizarro, Jon Williams and Marcelo Galafassi. Newcomers Leo de Barros and Jordan Green will come in to produce right away with Elio Benitez adding to the equation. The midfield will be very versatile, capable of playmaking as well as scoring and should defend very well. Offensively, scoring won’t be a problem. Returner Fred Moojen will have help from newcomers Ian Richardson and Guilherme Alves. Also returning, Drew Payne will combine with Yasmin Alihodzic to give the offense plenty of options. Size, strength and fire power will be the trademark of the attackers on this season’s squad. In goal, the Splitters will be young but talented. Brent Cole and Patrick Riesenberg will contend with a solid team ahead of them. Soccer is a very unforgiving sport and many times the better team does not win. However, one thing can be affirmed. The better prepared and the more talented a team is, the better the chance for success. This much will definitely be in place for the Railsplitters in 2005. 24

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 107th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 2,579 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) begins its 36th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. We take pride in our 38 National Team Championships in 12 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The 2003-04 season was a banner campaign for the GSC, which claimed its first-ever National Championships in Women’s Volleyball (North Alabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida). Delta State capped it off by winning its first-ever national crown in baseball, the fifth time a GSC school has captured the Title. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), opened an office in Hammond, LA, and began championships in all men’s sports. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (199293); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert McChesney (University of Montevallo). Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech University) and Vice Chair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (Ouachita Baptist University). The Supervisors of Officials are Bill Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
