2006 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK The 2006 season outlook for the Lady Railsplitters is one full of questions. The biggest question that comes to the mind of Head Coach Dan Burns is can this team score runs? With the loss of big hitters and All-Gulf South Conference performers Renae Carter and Judy Hornsby, juniors Brittney Walker and Tiffany Evans and sophomore Alisa Burk will have to step up and drive in runs this year. Brittney Walker, last year’s top hitter and pitcher is expected to again lead the team in those categories. In her second year with the Lady Railsplitters, Walker led LMU in hitting with a .383 batting average, while scoring a team-high 47 runs, with 64 hits, 12 doubles, eight triples, three homeruns and 23 RBI. Burk, a .271 hitter a year ago, recorded 45 hits, 10 doubles, three homeruns and 19 RBI and showed much improvement defensively during the fall season. Tiffany Evans, is hoping to have a break out year after hitting .263 last year with 40 hits, seven doubles, six homeruns and 31 RBI. Returning senior Danielle Sowders will again play at third base, but will also be a key to the Lady Railsplitter’s success this season. Sophomore Amanda Wampler looks to be a mainstay at second base and could see some pitching duties. The Lady Railsplitter outfield is lacking depth but has good experience returning from last year’s team. Senior Kristen Hutchison and juniors Brittney Walker, Gina Grace and Cassey Schutte will all see time in the outfield. Grace is a left-handed slapper and plays solid in the outfield. Schutte is another returner that needs to have a big year for the Lady Railsplitters both defensively and with the stick. Hutchison is a player with power and could drive in a lot of runs if she can put all things together at the plate. Last season, Carter and Hornsby were not only offensive threats but were also solid behind the plate. Both Lady Splitter catchers this season are freshman and new to the squad. Chelsie McNew and Danielle Cooper lack experience but both are more than qualified to get the job done. The LMU pitching staff is strong this season. Brittney Walker and Jessica Stewart have come into the 2005-06 season better than last year. Transfer Kelly Click, a strong left-hander will also see a lot of action inside the circle. If Head Coach Dan Burns can get all of the questions answered early in the season, the Lady Railsplitters will be a good softball team this year. Early competition against Division I University of Tennessee Chattanooga, and pre-conference tournaments such as the West Georgia Invitational and Catawba College Invitational will set the stage for Gulf South Conference play. So, who will win the GSC? West Florida is always at the top, and Alabama-Huntsville is always right there too. North Alabama could knock on the door and Delta State will most likely hold down the western division. Yes, there are lots of questions surrounding this year’s Lincoln Memorial softball team but one thing is for sure, the Lady Railsplitters will be hard to beat and if all the questions are answered in time, the LMU women will be at or near the top at the end.

LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF
HEAD COACH DAN BURNS A native of Kettering, Ohio, Burns began his career at Lincoln Memorial University in the fall of 1970 where he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball. While playing for the legendary Dean Bailey, Burns was a standout in both sports and was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University Athletes Hall of Fame in 2003 for his collegiate contributions. In 1976, he accepted the position of assistant baseball coach and four years later became head coach when Bailey made the decision to retire after 31 years at the helm of the Railsplitter baseball program. From 1981 to 1987 Burns served as the skipper of the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program, serving as athletics director from 1987 to 1988 and as director of campus and community recreation from 1989 to 1995. In 1995 Burns again returned to the diamond, this time as head coach of the Lady Railsplitter softball program. Although is was his first experience coaching women’s collegiate softball, his knowledge of the game shined on the field and his teams soon made their presence known thoughout the Gulf South Conference. In only his second season with the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters reached the 1996 GSC Tournament Championship, losing to eventual champion Alabama-Huntsville. During Burns’ 10 years as head coach of the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters have made seven trips to the confenence tournament, while producing 20 all-conference players and one NCAA Division II All-American. In addition, Burns ranks as one of the nation’s winningest active coaches with a career record of 337 wins and 251 losses going in to the 2006 season. Burns is a 1974 graduate of Lincoln Memorial . He currently resides in Harrogate with his wife, Regina and their three children.
ASSISTANT COACH JENNEFFER KOHLER Kohler begins her first season as assistant coach with the Lady Railsplitter softball program, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. Before accepting the position at LMU as assistant, Kohler spent nearly a year with Yuba Community College as assistant coach, assisting with daily practice sessions, while coaching the infield and hitting and serving as an adjunct professor of physical education. Prior to her employment at Yuba, Kohler spent a season as assistant coach at Texas Tech University. While working with the Red Raiders, her duties included supervising academics throughout the semester, coaching of the infielders, assisting with hitting and daily practice sessions and the planning and organizing of summer camps. Kohler was no stranger to Texas Tech when she accepted the assistant position. Only a few years earlier she had taken the position of graduate assistant for the softball program and later the graduate position for women’s athletics in the equipment room. As a athlete, Kohler has competed in the European Tournament in 1994, won a state championship with Sacramento City College in 1995 and played Texas Tech University from 1997 to 1999, helping the Red Raiders reach the sweet sixteen her final year. As a student-athlete, she was a Big XII All-Academic Honorable Mention recipient, was named to the Big XII Commissioner’s Honor Roll and made the Dean’s Honor List for scholastic achievement. While working with the Lady Railsplitters, Kohler’s duties will include helping with recruiting, assisting with the daily practices and workouts and various other assignments from Head Coach Dan Burns.
Kohler currently resides in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 107th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU has a current enrollment of approximately 2,802 students and 175 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JAY NIDIFFER Nidiffer returned to his alma mater for the second time in 2003 as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director after serving as an assistant men’s basketball coach at NCAA Division I institutions such as Auburn, Mercer, Georgia Tech and East Tennessee State. In 1987, Nidiffer took over the helm of the LMU athletics program and played an instrumental role in the University making the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Nidiffer also helped guide the Railsplitter athletics program into the Gulf South Conference, which is considered by many to be the strongest Division II conference in the country. In addition to his daily duties as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director, Nidiffer is heavily involved with development opportunities for the University’s athletics program. An Elizabethton, Tennessee native and 1956 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, Nidiffer is married to the former Katie Hodge, also a 1956 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University.

GSC HISTORY
HISTORY OF THE GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE
The GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE (GSC) begins its 36th year of excellence, continuing a tradition of growth and success that has brought it distinction as one of the elite NCAA Division II conferences. With 17 universities in six southeastern states, the GSC is the largest playing Conference in Division II. GSC members feature comprehensive athletic programs that compete for 14 official conference championships: football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. We take pride in our 38 National Team Championships in 12 sports and the emphasis on academic success by our coaches and student-athletes. The 2003-04 season was a banner campaign for the GSC, which claimed its first-ever National Championships in Women’s Volleyball (North Alabama) and Men’s Tennis (West Florida). Delta State capped it off by winning its first-ever national crown in baseball, the fifth time a GSC school has captured the Title. Originally known as the Mid-South Conference, the GSC was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee-Martin and Troy State. Scheduling problems for the 1970-71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the GULF SOUTH CONFERENCE, added Southeastern Louisiana (SELA) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight), opened an office in Hammond, LA, and began championships in all men’s sports. The following year, Mississippi College and Northwestern Louisiana (NWLA, now Northwestern State) were admitted. NELA withdrew to go Division I two years later, followed by SELA and Nicholls State in 1979. The conference continued with seven teams until 1981, when the presidents admitted Valdosta State. West Georgia joined in 1983. Eight years of stability ended in 1991 when Tennessee-Martin and Troy State went Division I, briefly dropping the GSC back to seven members, before the beginning of an expansion resulting in ten new members: Lincoln Memorial (1992-93); Alabama-Huntsville, Henderson State, Central Arkansas and Mississippi University for Women (1993-94); West Florida (1994-95); and Arkansas-Monticello, Arkansas Tech, Montevallo and Southern Arkansas (1995-96). Jacksonville State went Division I at the end of 1992-93. Mississippi College dropped to Division III at the end of 1995-96, and was replaced by Christian Brothers to keep the Conference at 16 schools. In July 2000, the GSC welcomed Harding University and Ouachita Baptist University, making it the largest NCAA conference at any level with 18 schools. The Conference membership decreased to 17 when MUW dropped its athletics program at the end of the 2002-03 season. Former Commissioner Jim McCullough moved the GSC office to its present Birmingham location. The current Commissioner, Nathan (Nate) N. Salant, has been in office since October, 1992. He is assisted by Sports Information Director Michael Anderson, Assistant Sports Information Director Tim Andrzejewski, Office Manager Mary Jean Box and Assistant to the Commissioner Andrea Nguyen. The Chairman of the GSC Board of Directors is Dr. Robert McChesney (University of Montevallo). Joining him on the executive committee are past-Chair Dr. Robert Brown (Arkansas Tech University) and Vice Chair Dr. Andy Westmoreland (Ouachita Baptist University). The Supervisors of Officials are Bill Johnson (Football), Mike Murphy (Basketball-East Division) and John Caldwell (Basketball-West Division).
