2006 SEASON PREVIEW After a successful 2005 season in which they won 20 matches for the eighth consecutive season, losing five starters will raise some interesting questions for the 2006 season. New faces and inexperience would be one way to describe this year’s Lady Splitter volleyball team. Patience will be a must for the coaching staff, but nevertheless the expectations are the same. Leading the way for the Lady Splitters will be seniors Joy Otto and Blythe McCulley. Otto has been a three-year starter in the middle having played in 95 matches. She is currently fifth in career blocks with 304 and will be looked upon to be more productive offensively. McCulley has been a productive player in her three seasons of play at LMU. She has primarily been used for her passing ability but has seen time as an outside hitter. Karlee Wyrick is the only junior returning. She is an effective server and has primarily been a defensive specialist. Wyrick averaged 1.87 digs per game last season. The sophomores are a class of four led by Cami Lefeld. Lefeld started on the right side as a freshman and proved that she can be solid on offense and defense. Caitlin Hankins also saw significant time as a middle and right side. Jaclyn Dvorscak also returns on the outside as she will look to battle for a spot. Laura Slone returns at setter looking to compete for the spot. Six new faces join the Lady Splitters. Two transfers and four freshmen will look to continue the successful tradition at LMU. Jency Basinger comes to LMU from Palomar College. Basinger played libero and was a solid server as well. We will look for her ball control to be a big asset. Amanda Baker comes to LMU from Merced College. She is a versatile player that will look to play outside or on the right side. Both players have good experience and I will look for them to be solid contributors. Amanda Collins comes to LMU from nearby Morristown West High School in Morristown, Tennessee. She is a versatile player that had a good high school career. Collins will compete in the middle for playing time. Alison Hess made her way to LMU from Chaminade-Julienne High School in Dayton, Ohio. Hess is a middle that is strong and solid at the net. Amanda Horenkamp is an outside hitter that played at Seigel High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Horenkamp brings good overall skills and is athletic on the outside. Amber Vanderlin rounds out the class. She is a setter from Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas. Vanderlin is very athletic and is a fiery competitor. This year will mark a departure from the norm as the Lady Splitters will not be competing in conference play for the first time since the 1992 season as they make the transition into the South Atlantic Conference. All matches against SAC schools will count as South Region games and the Lady Railsplitters will be able to make the regional tournament. Trips to the Tusculum and Montevallo Tournaments as well as the LMU Invitational highlight the 2006 schedule. Future SAC foes Tusculum, Newberry, Catawba, Mars Hill, Lenoir-Rhyne and CarsonNewman also make appearances on the schedule which includes 12 home matches.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL COACHING STAFF HEAD COACH: Mike Smith Coach Smith and the Lady Railsplitters picked up their eighth consecutive 20+win season in 2005 and will face a new challenge in 2006. Competing in the South Atlantic Conference will be a welcome challenge for Smith, who has a 45-17 career record against SAC teams. In Coach Smith’s twelve seasons the Lady Railsplitters have won 61% of their matches (245-157) and made four appearances in the conference tournament. He has coached many all-conference and allacademic players and had one player named Freshman of the Year. The 1999 squad received a team award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association for their academic achievement. During the summer months, Smith enjoys promoting and teaching volleyball. He spends many hours on the road running camps all over the region for middle and high school players. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program at Lincoln Memorial University. He received his bachelors degree in athletic training/health in 1992 and his masters degree in education administration and supervision in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Smith serves as the Athletic Events Manager for Lincoln Memorial University. He is married to the former Katy Stanley and they have one daughter, Mary Kathryn.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH: Kallie Noble Kallie begins her first season with the Lady Railsplitter volleyball program in 2006. She is from Bloomington, Indiana, and has a wealth of experience in and around volleyball. She is a graduate of Western Michigan University with an elementary education / music degree. Kallie most recently has been taught and coached volleyball for the Hoosierland Volleyball Club in Bloomington. Her primary responsibilities will be working with the setters, gameday operations and recruiting. Kallie will be working towards a Masters of Education degree at LMU.

Coach Smith on McCulley: “Blythe has been a very versatile player for us and has been successful playing several positions. MARY E. MARS GYMNASIUM The LMU volleyball team plays all of its home matches in the historic Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, the home of LMU volleyball since the program came into existence in 1989. Since 1992 the Lady Railsplitters have compiled a 112-56 record, good for a .667 winning percentage in 14 seasons of play. The building now known as Mars Gym was originally a sports arena at Camp Forrest, an Army post and prisoner-of-war camp in Tullahoma, Tennessee, (now a part of Arnold Air Force Base known as the Arnold Engineering Development Center), from 1941-1946. One of the more famous people using the future Mars Gym during this period was General George S. Patton, who used the facility in 194142 to help train the 2nd Armored Division. After the war, Camp Forrest was closed and the building was no longer in use. In 1946, LMU began a campaign for a new athletics facility and it was suggested that the Camp Forrest building be bought and moved to the campus. The building was renamed the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium after the mother of a former member of the Board of Trustees, Sam Mars Sr., and dedicated to all mothers everywhere. The Mars Gym was officially opened on November 29, 1948, in a basketball game which saw the Railsplitters fall 58-4 to the Tennessee Volunteers. In 1995 the Mary S. Annan Natatorium was added to the building. Mars Gym served as the home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1948-1991. Since the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the facility has been used almost exclusively by the volleyball team. Beginning in 2004, the facility has undergone extensive renovations including a new scoreboard, technology upgrades at the scorers table/press row, repairs to the locker rooms, new windows and new glass-door entrances, as well as renovations to the swimming pool and changing rooms in the Annan Natatorium. Other renovations are ongoing at this time. The facility seats 1,500 spectators for athletic events and houses offices and classrooms. Coach Mike Smith’s office was moved here in 2004 and is located next to the West entrance.
