HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his fifth season as head coach of the LMU soccer program after last season’s NCAA Division II Final Four ride with the men’s program. After capturing men’s and women’s GSC Championships in 2005, the Lady Railsplitters advanced to the NCAA South Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year before falling in the semi-finals. Last season, it was the men’s program that earned a trip to the NCAA Appalachian Region Tournament where they defeated Lenoir-Rhyne College in a shootout to capture the regional crown. Later the Railsplitters knocked off Northern Kentucky University in the Elite-8 match to advance to the NCAA Final Four in Pensacola, Florida. The Railsplitters were eventually defeated in the national semi-finals by defending NCAA Division II Champion Fort Lewis to end the year. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes coaching and instructing at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and CincinnatiBrazil Soccer. D’Anna now possesses an overall winning record of 191-103-22 in his collegiate career as a head coach (147-78-16 with the men and 44-25-4 with the women). ASSISTANT COACHES Assistant Coach Paula Fantini A former women’s soccer star at nearby Union College, Paula Fantini joins the LMU coaching staff after obtaining a double major in physical education and sports management, with minors in health and general business and a masters in health and physical education. As she begins her first year as assistant coach for the LMU soccer program, Fantini will pursue her second master’s degree in business. As a student-athlete, Fantini excelled on and off the field. She was a Dean’s List honoree every semester at Union, and was a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree, as well as a two-time All-American Scholar Athlete. She was named All-Conference and All-Region three times, and was named All-American twice. Fantini has a strong coaching background in both club soccer (Impact USA Nike) and in college soccer (University of Campinas). “Her resume speaks for itself ,” says LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “She was and still is a phenomenal player and has already proved to have tremendous coaching skills. More importantly, she is a person of excellence and that is what we always associate our program with at LMU. We are thrilled to have her on board with our men’s and women’s soccer program.”
Graduate Assistant Coach Jon Williams Jon begins his first season as graduate assistant with the LMU soccer programs after a stellar four-year career as a player for Coach D’Anna. During four seasons under Coach “L”, Williams was part of a program that captured 48 wins, only 18 losses and seven ties, in addition to a Gulf South Conference Championship title in 2005, an NCAA Appalachian Region Championship in 2006, an NCAA Elite-8 title in 2006 and earned the University’s first trip in men’s soccer to the NCAA Final Four in 2006. From his defensive position, Williams played in 55 games in his collegiate career, scoring two goals and handing out two assists for a total of six career points. As graduate assistant coach, Williams will be involved with all phases of the program including working with the keepers and will pursue a masters degree in education.
Graduate Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions are evident by last season’s Appalachian Region title, an Elite-8 title and the Railsplitters first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Final Four. As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes will bring to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that is second to none. In addition to being involved with team and individual workouts, de Moraes also work with the keepers and will pursue a master’s degree in education.

2007 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK The LMU women’s soccer team enters 2007 with one objective in mind, to get back on track. After making the NCAA national tournament in 2004 and 2005, the Lady Railsplitters failed to qualify in 2006. In that year, the team had to get acquainted with a new region and a new set of opponents. The adjustment proved to be a tough challenge and although the team appeared in the regional rankings a few times, in the end, the women came up short. Now the road map is well-defined and the players know what to expect. Not only are the conference teams more familiar to the returning players, but so are the regional top teams. The LMU team will have to perform well against the “usual suspects” Tusculum, Carson Newman, Catawba, Columbus State, Clayton State and Mars Hill as well as the up and coming programs (Newberry, Pfeiffer, Wingate, and Lenoir Rhyme). Obviously the players who are best prepared for these challenges are the returners. LMU has a strong core of the team returning including stars Heloisa de Oliveira, Juliana Povoa, Patty Spielman, Camilla Verissimo, Hanna Toivonen, Robyn Rowe and five ascending players (Catalina Varsalona, Courtney Hollis, Tiffany Trent, Leanne Harkness and Erin Longworth). Speaking of players, a strong class of new ones arrive for the fall with little time to acclimate. Although all are very talented, some are expected to have tremendous impact such as Karina Campos, Denise de Resende, Vanessa Santana, Becky Thompson, Hannah McEwan and Lea Cataggio. Much is also expected from Lindsay Wainikainen, Julianna Childers, Mandi Moran, Karen Boleska, and Ashley Wallace. Arriving to contribute to the aspiring success are three new members of the coaching staff, assistant coach Paula Fantini and graduate assistants Adriano de Moraes and Jon Williams. They will be just as important in providing the extra boost to the already motivated roster that is eager to produce. The mixture of veteran decorated players and extremely talented incoming players is very exciting. All players worked very hard this summer to arrive in top shape, including several who played in summer leagues. The posture is to quietly go about business until the time to make a noise comes when the first match that takes place on August 25 at home vs. Pfeiffer University.

2007 RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK The word confidence comes to mind when one takes a look at the LMU men’s soccer team roster. After a banner year in 2006 when the team won the NCAA Appalachian Regional title, the Elite-8 title and appeared in the NCAA Final Four, the Railsplitters boast nothing less than 16 returners. Several returnees were key in the 2006 campaign, including Brent Cole, Jordan Green, Felipe Nogueira, Vitor Souza, Pedro Canineu, Marcelo Galafassi, Claudio Rico, Leo de Barros, Leandro Pereira, Guilherme Alves, and Nelson Pizarro. the Railsplitters return solid contributors in Patrick Riesenberg, Gavin MacLeod, Ian Richardson and Kyle Gros and nothing is being left to chance. A number of strong players have been brought in. Much is expected from Jemal Talore and Jemele Juber but all the new players will bring in strong traits, including Robel Moges, Greg Lewandowski, Aaron McKenna, Adam Huber and Jimmy Vandenhurk. Also arriving to contribute to the aspiring success are three new members of the coaching staff, assistant coach Paula Fantini and graduate assistants Adriano de Moraes and Jon Williams. They will be just as important in providing the extra boost to the already motivated roster that is eager to produce. Standing between the Railsplitters and another trip to the national tournament is a number of tough opponents, both in the conference (all tough games with emphasis placed on Lenoir Rhyme, Carson Newman, Tusculum, Catawba and Newberry) and in the region (key matches include the University of Charleston, Salem International and Alderson Broaddus). Critical to the strength of schedule includes out of region matches with Barry University, Lewis Universityand Presbyterian College. This veteran-oriented LMU team knows that nothing will come easy and no one will hand games out without a fight. So to earn a chance to appear again in post season play, the Railsplitters have worked extremely hard this summer and have a record number of the players that competed in various summer leagues.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 110th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2006 enrollment was 2,981 students and there were 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
