LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF
HEAD COACH DAN BURNS A native of Kettering, Ohio, Burns began his career at Lincoln Memorial University in the fall of 1970 where he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball. While playing for the legendary Dean Bailey, Burns was a standout in both sports and was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University Athletes Hall of Fame in 2003 for his collegiate contributions. In 1976, he accepted the position of assistant baseball coach and four years later became head coach when Bailey made the decision to retire after 31 years at the helm of the Railsplitter baseball program. From 1981 to 1987, Burns served as the skipper of the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program, serving as athletics director from 1987 to 1988 and as director of campus and community recreation from 1989 to 1995. In 1995, Burns again returned to the diamond, this time as head coach of the Lady Railsplitter softball program. Although this was his first experience coaching women’s collegiate softball, his knowledge of the game shined on the field and his teams soon made their presence known thoughout the Gulf South Conference. In only his second season with the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters reached the 1996 GSC Tournament Championship losing to eventual champion Alabama-Huntsville. During Burns’ 10 years as head coach of the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters made seven trips to the confenence tournament and produced 20 all-conference players and one NCAA Division II All-American. In addition, Burns ranks as one of the nation’s winningest active coaches with a career record of 372 wins and 278 losses going into the 2007 season. Burns is a 1974 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University. He currently resides in Harrogate with his wife, Regina and their three children - Josh, Victoria and Gavin.
ASSISTANT COACH JENNEFFER KOHLER Kohler returns for a second season as assistant coach with the Lady Railsplitter softball program, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge and experience. Before accepting the assistant coaching position at LMU, Kohler spent nearly a year with Yuba Community College as assistant coach assisting with daily practice sessions, coaching the infield and hitting and serving as an adjunct professor of physical education. Prior to her employment at Yuba, Kohler spent a season as assistant coach at Texas Tech University. While working with the Red Raiders, her duties included supervising academics, coaching the infielders, assisting with hitting and daily practice sessions and the planning and organizing of summer camps. Kohler was no stranger to Texas Tech when she accepted the assistant position. Only a few years earlier she had taken the position of graduate assistant for the softball program and later the graduate position for women’s athletics in the equipment room. As an athlete, Kohler competed in the European Tournament in 1994, won a state championship with Sacramento City College in 1995 and played at Texas Tech University from 1997 to 1999, helping the Red Raiders reach the sweet sixteen her final year. She was a Big XII AllAcademic Honorable Mention recipient, was named to the Big XII Commissioner’s Honor Roll and made the Dean’s Honor List for scholastic achievement. Kohler’s duties at will include helping with recruiting, assisting with the daily practices and workouts and various other assignments. Kohler currently resides in Harrogate.

2007 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK It’s a whole new start for the Lady Railsplitters this season. After being in the Gulf South Conference for 14 years, the girls get a makeover this year. As new members of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) and South Atlantic Region, this team is looking forward to competing against different teams. LMU will be led by Brittney Walker, a three-time All Gulf South Conference selection. Brittney pitches and plays centerfield, and she is on the verge of rewriting the LMU softball record books. Three other seniors who will also be huge contributors are centerfielder Gina Grace (Placerville, CA), first baseman Tiffany Evans (Bowling Green, KY) and right fielder Cassey Schutte (Springfield, OH). This is a great senior class, and they have set high goals for themselves and the team this year. The infield should be solid. Junior Alisa Burk (Blaine, WA) has been a top performer at shortstop, and Amanda Wampler (Powell, TN) is much improved at second base. Top newcomers Sara Henn (Kettering, OH) at third and Devin Sponseller (Delaware, OH) behind the plate will give the ladies a chance to win every time out. Other top performers will be Danielle Cooper (Concord, NH), who will catch and DH, and Jessica Stewart (Loudon, TN) and Kelly Click (Ashland, OH), who will see a lot of mound time and will provide the extra arms the ladies will need for a long season. Players that will make a big difference in wins and losses will be pitcher/first baseman Jessica Locker (Tipp City, OH), outfielder Kara Faidley (Bristol, TN) and infielder Danielle Sharrett (Piney Flats, TN). These girls round out what the coaches feel is a very good team. Our schedule is loaded with top region teams to play. Tournaments in Aiken, SC, and at Lander University, Greenwood, SC, the Catawba College Invitational in Salisbury, NC, and at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA, will set up the Railsplitters for an at-large region bid. SAC teams that the Lady Railsplitters must respect include Tusculum College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, Presbyterian College and our old rival Carson Newman College. This season will be a great challenge for the Lady Railsplitters; it’s a new beginning with the dream of getting to the NCAA championships. As I remind our team frequently, “All is all and give nothing less.” We expect to win. 2007 LMU Softball

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 109th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university offering over 30 majors. LMU had a Fall 2006 enrollment of 2,981 students and 96 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
