2008-09 SEASON OUTLOOK Under the guidance of new head coach Stephanie Smith and led by junior All-South Atlantic Conference performer Andi Winney, the 20082009 Lincoln Memorial University women’s basketball team will look to make marked improvement on last year’s 3-11 conference record. Stephanie Smith brought in Christian Papp as her lead assistant. Papp joins the LMU team after spending the past four years coaching at Valparaiso University and, most recently, Indiana University. Rounding out Smith’s staff are Tristan McCray, who played at BethuneCookman, and Dawn Skelcher, who remains with the program for her eighth season. Smith will rely on junior forward Andi Winney this season. Winney, who led the team in scoring and field goal percentage, averaged 14 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while leading the conference in field goal percentage (66 percent). “Andi has really impressed me with her work ethic and desire to be a leader to the team,” says Smith. “Her ambidexterity is a real advantage for a post player, and our post coach has called her the best finisher he’s worked with. We’d like to see Andi get to the free throw line more and add to her rebounding stats this year.” Helping Winney will be returning sophomore guard Stephanie Wagner. Wagner was named to the SAC AllFreshman Team after averaging 9.8 points and shooting 37 percent from the arc. The Lady Railsplitters will have to replace the scoring and rebounding of Shawna Nichols and Heather Benton and will look to the remainder of the cast to fill the holes. Sure to help is senior guard Kara Harris (11.1 ppg). Harris started 25 of the Lady Splitters' 28 games last year and will be looked to not only for her scoring punch, but as a defensive stopper for LMU. Megan Davis (6.7 ppg. 4.5 rpg.), a 6-0 forward, also looks to be a key contributor. “Megan provides us length when defending on the perimeter. She’s a competitor and took 21 charges last season. It’s that type of sacrifice that will not only put Megan into a position to play a large number of minutes, but help our team be the best they can be.” Coach Smith has to be very excited about the prospects for success within the conference, as guard Amberly O’Dell will be eligible to begin playing after the first semester. O’Dell, a transfer from Division I Central Michigan, is a 5-6 sophomore that was recruited hard by LMU during high school. “Amberly can knock down the three and get to the basket, but perhaps her greatest attribute is her natural confidence. When she gets a few games under her belt, she will emerge as a force in the conference.” Last year, the Lady Railsplitters had only eight healthy players at many practices. This year Smith looks to her team’s depth as a strength. “We’re looking to push the ball more and associate more excitement with LMU women’s basketball. My teams have always been up-tempo,” says Smith. Among those having recovered from injury and looking to contribute will be returning forwards Bonnie DeBusk and Kelly Youhas, as well as guards Whitney Vannoy, Sarah Harrison and Brittney Craney. Coach Smith brought in several junior college transfers over the summer that she expects big things from, as well as signing two freshman perimeters that will make the team more athletic. “I’m not used to losing!” says Smith. “I expect us to work as hard as any team and to be competitive with the top teams in the conference this year. We’re going to improve on our fundamentals and bring intensity to everything, whether it’s an offensive possession or a defensive stop. As far as team play goes, we want to maximize the number of easy baskets we get in transition. On defense, I’m big on pressure, whether it’s with our half-court manto-man or pressing full court.” 2008-09 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 32nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Intercollegiate Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, allsports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s 2008-09 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

KEY DATES IN SAC HISTORY 1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed when six schools broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 1961 – Newberry joins league. Conference changes name to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) 1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed as football league with eight schools, called the SAC-8. 1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry 1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference 1996 – Newberry rejoins conference 1998 – Tusculum joins conference 2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference 2007 – Brevard admitted as provisional member

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tournaments. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University became the league’s newest member. Brevard College was admitted in 2007 as a provisional member. The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, NC; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall of Fame Room, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and the weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. The Lady Railsplitters in the Turner Arena Entrances to the building are located on the north, south, 1991-present -- 176-51 and east ends. PRESIDENT / ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

PRESIDENT DR. NANCY MOODY Nancy B. Moody was born and raised in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Following graduation as an honor student from Middlesboro High School, she received degrees in nursing from Eastern Kentucky University. Other degrees were received after beginning her professional career at Lincoln Memorial University. While at LMU, Dr. Moody was involved with initial and continuing accreditation activities from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the National League for Nursing (NLN). She was indirectly involved with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), but directly involved with the preparation of substantive change reports and visits from SACS following the development of off-campus nursing programs in Corbin, Kentucky, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Madisonville, Tennessee. She was directly involved with development of an R.N. to B.S.N. program, three off-campus programs, and programs in veterinary science. Dr. Moody has taught in associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs in nursing. She has worked closely with faculty from the Colleges of Business, Public and Allied Health and Medicine to develop interdisciplinary courses and a certificate program in health care management. She has taught in private higher education, and in both statewide systems of higher education in Tennessee, the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee. Dr. Moody serves as a program evaluator and peer review panel member for the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, as a research grant reviewer for the NLN and is a peer panel reviewer for Nursing and Health Care Perspectives. She has published in the Tennessee Nurse, the Journal of Professional Nursing, the Journal of Nursing Administration, the Nurse Practitioner and in Clinical Excellence for Nurse Practitioners. She has presented or is scheduled to present locally, regionally and nationally on nursing work force issues at conferences sponsored by the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the National Association of Student Nurses, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, the Rural Health Association of Tennessee, the Southern Regional Education Board, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the Tennessee Nurses Association. Since 1994, she has garnered approximately $1 million in grants and contracts to study work force issues in Tennessee. In terms of leadership, Dr. Moody has served as department chairperson, dean and executive director of an organization that was incorporated and became recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501[c]3 organization. In the latter capacity, she has been directly involved in the conduct of state-wide meetings, worked with a multidisciplinary state-wide group, represented the organization at state and national meetings, appeared before state boards, developed contracts with individuals and agencies, garnered donations, and written and administered grants for the organization. She and her husband Tom have two children, Adam and Mykel. Before moving to the President’s Home in Harrogate, the Moodys lived in Knoxville, Tennessee.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR ROGER VANNOY

Following the 2006-07 women’s basketball season, Roger Vannoy had served as Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s basketball coach for a quarter of a century. During that time he amassed a 453-245 record, earning a spot among the top-20 NCAA Division II active coaches of that time. A life-long native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy’s background in athletics dates back to his days as a high school coach at the former Powell Valley High School. Since that time he has coached 14 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and five All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirement from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season afforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve the institution from which he graduated in 1975. Vannoy and his wife Pam reside in Harrogate and have two daughters, Morgane and Whitney. 2008-09 LMU Lady Railsplitter Basketball

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2008 enrollment was 3,365 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
