LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF
HEAD COACH DAN BURNS A native of Kettering, Ohio, Burns began his career at Lincoln Memorial University in the fall of 1970 where he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball. While playing for the legendary Dean Bailey, Burns was a standout in both sports and was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University Athletes Hall of Fame in 2003 for his collegiate contributions. In 1976, he accepted the position of assistant baseball coach and four years later became head coach when Bailey made the decision to retire after 31 years at the helm of the Railsplitter baseball program. From 1981 to 1987, Burns served as the skipper of the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program, served as athletics director from 1987 to 1988 and as director of campus and community recreation from 1989 to 1995. In 1995, Burns again returned to the diamond, this time as head coach of the Lady Railsplitter softball program. Although this was his first experience coaching women’s collegiate softball, his knowledge of the game shined on the field and his teams soon made their presence known thoughout the Gulf South Conference. In only his second season with the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters reached the 1996 GSC Tournament Championship losing to eventual champion Alabama-Huntsville. During Burns’ 13 years as head coach of the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters have made seven trips to the conference tournament and produced 20 all-conference players and one NCAA Division II All-American. In addition, Burns ranks as one of the nation’s winningest active coaches with a career record of 409 wins, 296 losses and one tie going into the 2008 season. Burns is a 1974 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University. He currently resides in Harrogate with his wife, Regina and their three children - Josh, Victoria and Gavin.
ASSISTANT COACH TIFFANY EDGAR Edgar comes to LMU from East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, North Carolina, where she was head coach for three years. Before taking over the helm of the Cavalier program, Edgar played for the University of Toledo and was an NFCA Scholar Athlete, receiving the MAC Presidential Award. During her last year with the Rockets, Edgar received the honor of having an award named after her. The Edgar Excellence Award is given to a senior at the end of each season who exemplifies good citizenship, solid academics and excels athletically. Edgar is a native of Tecumseh, Michigan.

2008 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK THE 2007 LADY RAILSPLITTERS 2008 brings a new look to the LMU softball team. Losing 4foursenior starters and one All-American, the Lady Railsplitters look to reload with young freshmen. Even though most of the squad will be young there is strong experience returning at key positions. Jessica Locker, Sara Henn and Amanda Wampler have all pitched and been successful in the circle. Devin Sponseller has good experience behind the plate. With Sponseller at the plate, Alisa Burk at shortstop, Henn at third, Wampler at second and Locker at first the infield should be real solid this season. This is the first season that LMU will compete for the SAC title, and it won’t be easy. “There are great teams in this conference and it won’t be easy,” said LMU Head Coach Dan Burns. “Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate will be the teams to beat. But I have great respect for all the others as well. There is not a weak team in this conference.” LMU will play a 50-game schedule beginning with region games in early February and hopefully finishing with a SAC Championship in late April. DOROTHY NEELY FIELD The Dorothy Neely field has been the home of the Lady Railsplitters since the 1990 season. The field complex seats approximately 350 people in bleacher seats, sideline benches and open areas for lawn chairs. The dimensions are 200 feet down the lines and 215 to center field. The playing surface is Bermuda grass. Batting cages and a bullpen are adjacent to the field, and teams can also use the baseball field cages and bullpen if needed. There is also a press box / storage facility along the right infield base path which includes space for scoreboard and statistical operations as well as equipment storage and a changing room. The dugouts are enclosed, and there are safety fences in the front to help protect players, coaches and staff from stray balls. Lights were installed in 2003, and several night games are scheduled each year. The Lady Railsplitters first played on the field on March 28, 1990, when they hosted former TVAC foe Milligan College. LMU won both games by scores of 4-3 and 8-5. Prior to that, home games were played on a part of the old LMU farm (the playing site is now included in the Harrogate City Park.) The field was officially dedicated on May 12, 1990.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university offering over 30 undergraduate areas of study and five graduate degrees and programs. It is also home to Tennessee’s newest medical school, the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, which admitted its first class in Fall 2007. LMU had a Fall 2007 enrollment of 3,254 students and employed 96 faculty members at the main campus and 11 extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ROGER VANNOY Following the 2006-07 women’s basketball season, Roger Vannoy had served as Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s basketball coach for a quarter of a century. During that time he amassed a 453-245 record, earning a spot among the top-20 NCAA Division II active coaches of that time. A life-long native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy’s background in athletics dates back to his days as a high school coach at the former Powell Valley High School. Since that time he has coached 14 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and five All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirement from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season afforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve the institution from which he graduated in 1975.
