HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his sixth season as head coach of the LMU soccer program after helping the men’s team capture two a South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament title in 2007, back-to-back Appalachian Region titles in 2006 and 2007, and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. Last season’s run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 to Franklin Pirece A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes coaching and instructing at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer. D’Anna now possesses an overall winning record of 226-112-24 in his collegiate career as a head coach (167-82-17 with the men and 59-30-5 with the women). Coach D’Anna is part of the Olympic Development Program as a coach in the state of Kentucky. He and his wife, Debbie, reside in Barbourville, Kentucky.

Coach D’Anna has captured two NCAA Division II Regional titles, two Elite-8 crowns, made two trips to the NCAA Division II Final Four and one trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship since taking over the helm of LMU’s men’s soccer program.

ASSISTANT COACHES
Assistant Coach Paula Fantini
A former women’s soccer star at nearby Union College, Paula Fantini joined the LMU coaching staff last year after obtaining a double major in physical education and sports management, minors in health and general business and a master’s in health and physical education. Now in her second year as assistant coach for the LMU soccer program, Fantini is pursuing her second master’s degree in business. As a student-athlete, Fantini excelled on and off the field. She was a Dean’s List honoree every semester at Union, and was a three-time Academic all-conference honoree, as well as a two-time All-American Scholar Athlete. She was named all-conference and all-region three times, and was named All-American twice. Fantini has a strong coaching background in both club soccer (Impact USA Nike) and in college soccer (University of Campinas). “Her resume speaks for itself ,” says LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “She was and still is a phenomenal player and has already proven to have tremendous coaching skills. More importantly, she is a person of excellence and that is what we always associate our program with at LMU. We are thrilled to have her on board with our men’s and women’s soccer program.”
Graduate Assistant Coach Jon Williams Jon begins his second season as graduate assistant with the LMU soccer programs after a stellar four-year career as a player for Coach D’Anna. During four seasons under Coach “L”, Williams was part of a program that captured 48 wins and only 18 losses and seven ties, in addition to a Gulf South Conference Championship title in 2005, an NCAA Appalachian Region Championship in 2006, an NCAA Elite-8 title in 2006 and earned the University’s first trip in men’s soccer to the NCAA Final Four in 2006. From his defensive position, Williams played in 55 games in his collegiate career, scoring two goals and handing out two assists for a total of six career points. As graduate assistant coach, Williams is involved with all phases of the program including working with the keepers and will pursue a master’s degree in education.
Graduate Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes
Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions were evident in the Railsplitter’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four, and last year’s national championship appearance.
As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes brings to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that is second to none. In addition to being involved with team and individual workouts, de Moraes also works with the keepers and is pursuing a master’s degree in education.

2008 RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK In the progression of a program, one thing is for sure, great players will graduate and great opportunities will present new ones. That is definitely what 2008 will be all about. The legacy built over the past three or four years will be entrusted to a new array of talent. Although the pressure will be there, so is the excitement from these young players. The 2008 roster will have a great balance of returners, transfers, newcomers and freshmen. Leandro Pereira (Daktronics National Player of the Year), Felipe Nogueira (Daktronics First Team All-American), Aaron McEnna (Preseason All-South Atlantic Conference) Pedro Canineu and Gavin MacLeod are among the returning starters. Greg Lewandowski, Ian Richardson, Jimmy Vandenhurk and Jemele Juber are among those with aspirations to step up and compete for playing time this season. Transfers Willian Moura, Renato Segalla, Victor Plaza, and Rodrigo Brito Martins will be welcomed additions to the roster. Freshmen Ross Buckley, Michael Watkins and James McLeish are among the top young players coming in to begin their collegiate careers. In reality, all returning and new players are of great talent and will be key to the team’s performance this season. These players will “wear” a bull’s eye on their jerseys as all opponents will be gunning to try to knock off the defending South Atlantic Conference, Appalachian Region and National Runners-up. Critical regional games with Barton, Clayton State, Pfeiffer, Bellarmine and Francis Marion will be tough. The South Atlantic Conference schedule will also be closely contested as all teams in the league seem poised to challenge. The facility upgrades the Railsplitters are facing will also pose a challenge. As the project completion has been delayed, the LMU soccer teams will be playing more games on the road than usual. Having had the chance to exerience the pre-season in Brazil, the team will bring all the preparation and team bonding to fruition. Unity will be a critical ingredient in overcoming the challanges the Railsplitters will face this season. Let the games begin!

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2007 enrollment was 3,254 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

Division II Student-Athlete Perspectives Catching up with four former Division II stars Niki Arinze
McLain “Mac” Schneider
“I decided to finish my basketball career at a Division II institution because on my recruiting trip, they showed me that academically and athletically, they had strong programs. I was studying business and Henderson State has one of the best business programs in Arkansas, and the basketball team won the conference title the previous year, so they were a perfect fit for me. At Henderson State, I had more free time to do things outside of playing basketball, but I was still able to further my education and graduate.” Niki Arinze, Niki Arinze played basketball at a Henderson State Division I university for the first two years of his career and then transferred to Henderson State University. While at Henderson State, Arinze was named to the all-South Region first team, was an all-American and was the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year two times. He graduated from Henderson State in 2002 with a degree in business, then played professional basketball for the New Castle Eagles in the British Basketball League.
“I was initially attracted to the University of North Dakota because I could receive a wonderful education while playing on a quality football team in my home state. Division II provided the perfect balance for me, giving me a solid education while playing on a national championship football team. I found a balance that I couldn’t find in Division I or Division III. I cannot thank the people at North Dakota enough for giving me my experience at North Dakota that helped begin my law career. ” As an offensive lineman at North McLain “Mac” Schneider, Dakota, Mac Schneider was a key North Dakota member of the 2001 Division II national championship team. Academically, he graduated with summa cum laude honors as a history major and political science minor and was named to several academic all-district, all-conference and all-America teams. Schneider is currently working in Washington, D.C., as the press secretary for North Dakota Rep. Earl Pomeroy.
“I chose a Division II institution because of the family-like atmosphere and genuine care and concern for my well-being. The network you build with your coaches and professors in Division II is unbelievable and helps with career placement and graduate-school recommendations. While on campus, being at a Division II school gave me opportunities to expand my interests in other areas like student government, volunteering and others, while still being an athlete. From the beginning, I felt a sense of home in Division II and Brianna Williams, since then, I have realized it was one Mount Olive of the best decisions I ever made.” Although heavily recruited by Division I institutions, Brianna Williams chose to attend Division II Mount Olive College as a basketball studentathlete. She also served as chair of the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She is currently working as an associate chemist with Laboratory Corporation of America and is a full-time graduate student at East Carolina University, where she tutors student-athletes. Williams aspires to become a biology or physical sciences professor.
“Coming out of high school, everyone thinks that to be a successful athlete, you have to play Division I. I could have gone to any Division II school I wanted, but I went Division I because of the status associated with it. I thought I had to play Division I. I was highly criticized for my move (to Christian Brothers), but I played on an excellent team. While at Christian Brothers, we beat all the Division I teams we played. When a top Division II team is playing other top programs, the competition is comparable (to Missy Gregg, Division I). I won a national chamChristian Brothers pionship at my Division II institution, something I never could have done at my Division I school.” Missy Gregg, standout soccer forward, transferred to Division II Christian Brothers University after having a successful two-year career at a Division I university. She rewrote the soccer records for goals scored and assists in both Division I and Division II, earning a national championship with Christian Brothers as a senior. Named the Honda Award Division II Woman Athlete of the Year, two-time Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, NSCAA Player of the Year and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Female Amateur Athlete of the Year, Gregg also earned Dean’s List honors.
