2009-10 RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK With the return of 10 of it’s top 11 scorers from a team that posted the best record for LMU men's basketball since 2002, the Railsplitters seem poised to challenge for a league championship and a potential birth in the NCAA Tournament. Led by Head Coach Josh Schertz, the Railsplitters produced an immediate turnaround during his first season on the sidelines. Jumping from one conference win to eight and doubling their overall win total to 14 was impressive enough; doing it with a roster that included eight freshman and three sophomores among it’s 14 man roster has Railsplitter fans feeling good about the program’s future. The returning cast is led by junior D'Mario Curry (Detroit, MI) who was First Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection last year. He averaged team highs with 15.3 points and 8.1 rebounds while also leading LMU with 53 blocks and 43 steals. LMU also returns sophomore Desmond Johnson (Lynch, KY) who was named SAC Freshman of the Year while averaging 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds while collecting nine double-doubles as a freshman. Johnson was also an Freshman Team All-American. Senior guard Stuart Miller (Harrogate, TN) returns as the only senior member of the 2009-10 edition of the Railsplitters. As a junior, Miller averaged 10.2 points while leading the team with 59 made 3's. Miller overcame a slow start to shoot 41.7 percent behind the arc during conference play. Brandon Armstrong (Decatur, GA), a 6'1 sophomore guard, is back after averaging 9.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while finishing runner-up to teammate Desmond Johnson in the SAC Freshman of the Year voting. The Railsplitters also return sophomore guard Justin Allen (Lithonia, GA) who averaged 5.3 points and 3.1 rebounds and junior forward Scott Erland (Pegram, TN) who averaged 3.6 points while shooting 40.6 percent from 3-point range. Other impact returnees include sophomore guard Dominic Parker (Raleigh, NC) who averaged 3.4 points, junior forward Robin Sikes (Biloxi, MS) who averaged 3.0 points and sophomore Carlos Sanford (Durham, NC) who averaged 2.9 points per game. The four-man class of newcomers has three freshmen and one junior. Marc David Vil (Qebec, Canada) is a 6'4” junior guard who comes to LMU by way of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where he played the previous two years. Cam Carden (Clearwater, FL), 6'2” freshman guard, comes to LMU after redshirting last season at Stetson University. Wally Jones, a 6'2” freshman guard from Greensboro, North Carolina, and Dustin Craig (Knoxville, TN), a 6'6” forward, round out the 2009 newcomers to the LMU roster.

RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF

JOSH SCHERTZ HEAD COACH

2nd Season

Hired on March 22, 2008, Josh Schertz came to LMU with a reputation as one of the top assistant coaches in the country whose abilities as a recruiter had led to unparalled success for every basketball program he had been involved with. Schertz wasted no time in showing he was ready for similar success as a head coach. Inheriting a team that had won just one conference game and seven games overall the previous season, Schertz recruited 11 new players, including eight freshman, to make up his 2008-09 roster. With only three returning players, the Railsplitters were one of the youngest teams in the country with 11 underclassmen on their 14 man roster. Despite their youth, Schertz coached LMU to one of it’s better seasons in recent memory as the Railsplitters won eight conference games. They also doubled their overall win total from seven to 14 while improving from last to first in the league in field goal percentage defense. Schertz’s recruiting prowess paid off as three members of his initial recruiting class earned all-conference accolades. D’Mario Curry earned First Team All-South Atlantic Conference honors while Desmond Johnson was named South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American. Another member of the class of 2009, Brandon Armstrong, finished runner-up to Johnson in the Freshman of the Year voting and earned a spot on the South Atlantic Conference All-Freshman Team. Schertz’s commitment to excellence in every phase of the basketball program was evident as the Railsplitters saw a 65 percent increase in attendance, fundraising more than doubled and the team grade point average increased significantly. In 11 seasons as a college coach, Schertz has seen 38 of his 39 recruits graduate, has been a part of the winningest seasons in both High Point University and Queens University’s rich basketball histories and recruited the foundation of Lynn University’s record breaking 2005 team. In just 10 years of recruiting, Schertz has signed two National Players of the Year, three Conference Players of the Year, four Conference Freshman of the Year, three Freshman All-Americans and nine players who have earned First Team All Conference honors. He recruited the all-time leading scorers at Lynn University and High Point University as well as the all-time leaders in rebounding, assists and shot blocks at Lynn, High Point and Queens University. Schertz came to Lincoln Memorial University in 2008 after serving as the associate head coach at High Point University for the previous five seasons. During that time, they posted it’s five best seasons at the Division 1 level consecutively, highlighted by the 2006-07 season in which High Point posted a 22-10 record despite having only one senior. During his tenure at High Point, he helped the Panthers establish school records for wins in a season, conference wins, road wins and highest RPI ranking. High Point won 87 games in the five years Schertz was on staff; they won a total of 47 games in the five seasons before his arrival. HPU players also thrived in the classroom as 16 out of the 17 players who finished their eligibility graduated during the last five years. Schertz signed three top ranked recruiting classes in the Big South, and his 2005 recruiting class ranked in the top 35 nationally according to Hoopscoop. During Schertz’s tenure as recruiting coordinator two players, Danny Gathings in 2004 and AZ Reid in 2007 and 2008, earned Big South Conference Player of the Year honors three times and were both named Division I AllAmericans. He also signed three players, Reid 2005, Justin Dunn 2006 and Eugene Harris 2007, who went on to earn all freshman team honors at HPU. Prior to High Point, Schertz served as the associate head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina, helping lead the Royals to a two-year mark of 49-14 including a school record 29-4 mark in 2003. That 2003 season culminated in the schools first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four. As the program’s recruiting coordinator, Schertz made a huge impact signing 2004 National Division II Player of the Year Spencer Ross along with two-time national shot block leader Moustapha Diouf and 2003 CVAC Freshman of the Year Kendrick Harris. Schertz also served as a professor in the Queens physical education department and was the head coach of Queens’ junior varsity program. Before joining Queens, Schertz spent two years at Lynn University (Fla.) serving as the Fighting Knights recruiting coordinator. He helped guide Lynn to a 37-18 mark as well as a top-5 national ranking. While at Lynn, Schertz signed 2001 National Division II Freshman of the Year Leandro Garcia-Morales. His final signing class before moving to Queens may have been his lasting legacy as the five-man group went on to become the most successful group of players in Lynn history. That group included James Taylor (all-time leading scorer) Justin Wingard (all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker) Austin Faber (all-time leader in assists and steals) and Akil Lewis (all-time leader in made three-pointers), who as seniors formed the nucleus of Lynn’s school record-setting squad that tallied 29 wins and earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2005. While at Lynn, Schertz signed two players named Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, Garcia-Morales (2001) and Taylor (2002), as well as four players who went on to earn all-conference honors. Schertz began his career as an assistant coach at his alma mater Florida Atlantic University where he spent one season working under Kevin Billerman. Schertz also served as an assistant to current Florida Gators associate head coach Larry Shyatt for the 2001 Maccabi Games. Schertz, a 2000 graduate of Florida Atlantic, also has a masters in education from Lynn University. Coach Schertz has two sons, Jordan (13) and Jaden (7), and is married to the former Natalia Ceballos. They reside in Harrogate, TN. 2009-10 LMU Railsplitter Basketball

The SouTh ATlAnTic conference THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 33nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University will become the league’s 10th member. LMU not only had a new coach at the start of the 1929 school season, they also had a conference. The Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference (SMAC) was formed in the summer of 1929. The Railsplitters would be in the SMAC until it disbanded in the early 1960’s

With the entry of America into World War II on Dec. 8, 1941, small colleges like LMU lost most of their male students to the services. The SMAC followed suit and halted play until the end of the war. Some schools, like Milligan and CarsonNewman, became Naval training colleges (with classifications like V-5 and V-12). Because of this, most schools put athletics on hold until the end of the war. LMU and a few other schools tried to keep athletics going. One example is Mars Hill, where all but one of the male students on campus were on the basketball team and the coach was a woman. With the end of the war in August, 1945, things slowly began to return to “normal” and schools resumed their athletic programs.

The 1948-49 season had a lot of “firsts.” LMU had a new coach in Dean Bailey, who played against the Railsplitters in football, basketball and baseball while a student at East Tennessee State. They had a new permanent gym in the Mary Mars Gymnasium. They had a new conference with the VSAC adding regular season games (the Volunteer State Athletic Conference had been founded in 1947 and LMU won the first title in the tournament, but the 48-49 season was the first with a full VSAC schedule.) And this season also saw LMU’s first national postseason appearance in the NAIB (which was the basketball portion of the NAIA ) Tournament.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests, with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall-ofFame, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both The Railsplitters in the Turner Arena levels). 1991-present -- 151-88 The arena was named after former LMU football 1990-91 -- 2-3* 2000-01 -- 5-7 standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds 1991-92 -- 10-5 2001-02 -- 8-3 for its construction. Work on the multi-million dollar facility 1992-93 -- 12-1 2002-03 -- 12-0 began on May 7, 1988 and on Feb. 2, 1991 the Railsplitters 1993-94 -- 13-2 2003-04 -- 3-8 1994-95 -- 7-7 2004-05 -- 3-8 and Lady Railsplitters held their first contests in the facility 1995-96 -10-4 2005-06 -- 4-8 when they hosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in 1996-97 -- 8-7 2006-07 -- 8-5 a doubleheader. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 112th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2009 enrollment was 3,948 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
