HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA

Coach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his seventh season as head coach of the LMU soccer program. In the past three years, the Railsplitters have qualified to the National Championships twice. They also captured a South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament title in 2007, back-to-back Appalachian Region titles in 2006 and 2007 and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. In 2008, their run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 to Franklin Pierce. Last year, the Railsplitters finished the season with an 11-7-2 record, advancing to the South Atlantic Tournament semifinals with a 5-3 record. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes coaching and instructing at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and CincinnatiBrazil Soccer. D’Anna possesses an overall winning record of 248-122-25 in his collegiate career as a head coach (178-86-19 with the men and 70-36-6 with the women). ASSISTANT COACHES Assistant Coach Paula Fantini

A former women’s soccer star at nearby Union College, Paula Fantini joined the LMU coaching staff in the fall of 2007 after obtaining a double major in physical education and sports management and minors in health and general business. As a student-athlete, Fantini excelled on and off the field. She was a Dean’s list honoree every semester at Union, and was a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree, as well as a two-time All-American Scholar Athlete. She was named All-Conference and All-Region three-times, and was named All-American twice. She is ranks 3rd in assists, 4th in goals scored, and holds 4th place in the Union’s individual career records book. The team from her junior year in college will enter the Athletic Hall of Fame – Teams Distinction - at Union College this fall. Fantini has a strong coaching background in both club soccer (FC Alliance) and in college soccer (University of Campinas). “Her resume speaks for itself,” says LMU Head Coach Helio D’Anna. “She was and still is a phenomenal player and has already proven to have tremendous coaching skills. More importantly, she is a person of excellence and that is what we always associate our program with at LMU. We are thrilled to have her on board with our men’s and women’s soccer program.”

Graduate Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes

Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions were evident in the Railsplitter’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four, and their 2007 national championship appearance. As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes brings to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that is second to none. In addition to being involved with team and individual workouts, de Moraes also works with the keepers and is pursuing a master’s degree in education.

Graduate Assistant Coach Ian Richardson

Following a successful playing career at LMU, Ian will begin his first year as graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. A native of North Lanarkshire, Scotland, Richardson was a smooth player with a very steady personality on and off the field. Now as a coach, he plans to translate his experiences that built a solid winning tradition for the Railsplitters into a new streak of accomplishments. Coach Richardson will be involved with all phases of the program including keeper training. He will pursue a masters degree in education.

Team Physician Dr. Howard Teitelbaum Dr. Howard Teitelbaum enters his second season as the team physician for the Lincoln Memorial University women’s soccer program. His primary duties are serving as a professor of medicine at the University’s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before coming to LMU, Teitelbaum coached soccer at the high school level in the State of California and was also a soccer referee and officiated at the college and professional level. Teitelbaum served as the State Director of Referee instruction for the State of Michigan for the United States Soccer Federation and is still a standing member of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association.

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK The beginning of a season is a very special time. The expectations, excitement and hopes are so strong; you can see it in the players’ eyes. Last year was full of challenges with many injuries and many new players arriving to fill big shoes. Although we finished with a very good record and maintained the winning tradition, the players felt that they fell short of the mark they had set. This season feels like a chance to get it right. The players had a very strong off season, including the spring workouts and games, as well as the summer leagues and conditioning. Without a doubt, the players are eager to get going with the preseason and to achieve what they felt should have happened last year. This year’s roster is full of seniors and talent. Some players who missed several games last year are back and healthy. Others who had their first encounter with college soccer now know what this level is all about and are ready to meet the challenge. The juniors are poised to lead as much as the seniors, and the incoming class could not be more promising. On paper, this could be one of our strongest teams ever assembled. We will be deep at all positions with two, three and even four players of quality for every position. The healthy internal competition will push everyone to give their best daily. The coaching staff will have a good problem of solving several puzzles to find the playing time and to make the right personnel choices for every game. Our schedule could not be any stronger and will give us a chance to contend for an at-large spot in nationals. We play 14 regional games including all of our always tough conference opponents, as well as Barton, Lees-McRae, King, Alabama-Huntsville and Francis Marion. Although we will not have an easy day on the pitch, the strong schedule will showcase our talent and depth of the roster. Our new facilities are a year older which allows us to play more home games. This will be a welcome situation as last year we were forced to play very few home games due to the stadium construction. And, an important goal for our staff is to attract bigger crowds for our games. The quality of the team is a great factor, as well as the comfort of the new facilities. The returning players as well as the newcomers are well aware of the academic goals as well. We start the year with a 3.0+ GPA and intend to build on it. Achieving the NSCAA Team Academic Award is an important goal to be achieved. Our coaching staff is in tune and made up of people with great history at LMU. Considering all the excitement and growth that LMU is going through, it’s even more exciting for us to see how far we have come over the years. The team and the staff reflect this transformation and add to the sense that something very special is happening in Harrogate, Tennessee. All pieces are in place and we just await the first whistle to start writing the exciting new segment of our history.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 112th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2008 enrollment was 3,365 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
