2009 RAILSPLITTER TENNIS SEASON OUTLOOK The 2008-09 Lincoln Memorial University tennis teams begin a new era of play under the direction of first year Head Coach Benny Collins. With seven returning men’s players from a year ago and a host of new faces on the court for the Lady Railsplitters, the 2009 spring schedule could have a bitter-sweet flavor for Lincoln Memorial University tennis fans. The Railsplitters will be led by All-South Atlantic Conference performer Hannes Ganss (Erlangen, Germany) and fellow countryman Bastian Guenther (Erlangen Germany). While the Railsplitters finished 4-11 in the spring of 2008, both Ganss and Guenther completed the season with a strong showing. Ganss began his collegiate career by going undefeated in 2008, and Guenther lost only two matches while helping the Railsplitters end the year in the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Also returning from a year ago will be juniors Zack Jones (Murfreesboro, TN), Gabor Heredi-Szabo (Kecksemet, Hungary) and Andras Pauko (Budapest, Hungary). Jones finished the 2008 season with a 5-8 overall record but is reported to have improved his game by leaps-and-bounds from a year ago. While Heredi-Szabo struggled in his sophomore season, he has come back in 2009 in better physical shape and ready to turn things around. Pauko also struggled against the tough 2008 schedule but has worked hard in the off-season to take his game to a higher level. Other returners from 2008 are sophomores Andrew Bates (Walton, KY) and Cody Swindall (Clintwood, VA). Both look to take their game to the next level in an effort to allow the Railsplitters to become a legitimate conference championship contender and to once again reach the NCAA Tournament. Among the newcomers this year will be freshmen Tom Goossens (Ledestraat, Belgium) and Corbett Smith (Tazewell, TN). Goossens will be an impact player and will fight for time at the no. 1, no. 2 or no. 3 singles positions with sophomores Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther, while Smith will provide the Railsplitters depth at the end of the lineup this season. With the loss of Kathleen Rollet, Martin Rezic, Rachel Redmond and Sofie Denlinger from a year ago, the Lady Railsplitter tennis team will be very young in 2009. Returning will be juniors Mandy Mills (Tazewell, TN) and Nicole Combs (Harrogate, TN) who will play toward the back of the Lady Railsplitter lineup. Returning sophomore Emily Osborne (Middlesboro, KY) will possess the strongest game among the Lady Railsplitters returning from a year ago. The 2009 spring schedule will showcase a host of talented newcomers in the Lady Railsplitter lineup. Fighting for time at the no. 1 and no. 2 singles positions will be Sofia Lopez Memendi (Mexico City, Mexico) and Ann-Sophie Indeherberge (ZonHoven, Belgium). Memendi, small in stature but big in fire-power, will be an immediate impact on the Lady Railsplitter program, while Indeherberge will bring much-needed collegiate experience as a transfer from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where she played her first two season of college tennis. Both will lead the LMU attack this season. Other newcomers to the Lady Railsplitter program include junior Jenny Powell (Middlesboro, KY), junior Katy Oliver (Bournemouth, England) and freshman Melanie Smith (Manchester, KY). Powell, a nursing student at Lincoln Memorial University, played for Coach Collins while at Middlesboro High School and will provide depth in the lineup, while Oliver originally came to Lincoln Memorial University as a golfer. After sustaining a wrist injury that prohibited her from swinging a club accurately, Oliver made the transition to tennis and will compete toward the back half of the lineup this season. Smith, who enters her first year of collegiate tennis, was a standout at Clay County High School and will compete for time at the no. 3, no. 4 and no. 5 positions as well. With a new flavor, a new desire and a host of talented players, the 2008-09 LMU tennis season proves to be interesting and an exciting one for Lincoln Memorial University fans. The schedule, as always, is among the toughest in the region and both teams will be looking to make an appearance in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship in late April.

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH BENNY COLLINS A native of nearby Middlesboro, Kentucky, Collins served as head coach at Middlesboro High School from the Spring 2000 until the end of Spring 2008, tallying an overall record of 153-18 with the girls program which includes five regional titles and three regional runners-up honors. With the Yellow Jacket boys program, Collins amassed a record of 109-37 during that period and was regional runner-up with the program two times. “I’m excited to take over the LMU tennis programs,” said Collins. “The University is building a new tennis facility and will build an indoor facility in the future. With these facilities in place and the growth of the University, LMU tennis should get back on the national map quickly.” Collins takes the helm of two collegiate tennis programs that made the South Atlantic Conference Tournament final-four in 2008. The Lady Railsplitters finished the 2008 season with a record of 8-9, including a 4-3 conference record, while the Railsplitters were 4-11 and went 1-6 in the conference.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH RACHEL REDMOND After four seasons of playing collegiate tennis for the Lady Railsplitter program, Redmond begins her first year as graduate assistant for her alma mater. A product of Somerset, Kentucky, Rachel will be involved with off season conditioning, daily workouts and various other duties that come with the position. Having been a part of the LMU program for as long as she has, Redmond’s collegiate experience will be a help to Coach Collins in his first year at the helm of the Lincoln Memorial University tennis programs, and she should relate well to both the men’s and women’s team members regarding daily issues, match strategies and competition situations. Redmond ranks 11th all-time in career wins in and ranks 12th all-time in doubles wins at LMU. Having received her undergraduate degree in nursing, Redmond is now pursuing a master’s degree in nursing at Lincoln Memorial LMU.

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Tom is an incoming freshman this spring season. He is strong on both sides of the net and possesses a big serve. He is fit and ready to compete at the collegiate level. Having Tom in our lineup will strengthen a team that returns everyone from last year. I see Tom playing one of our top three positions. The addition of Tom Goossens will make the Railsplitters much strong in 2009.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Bastian is a Pete Rose type player. It doesn’t matter if he is on the court practicing or playing a match, he plays 110% at all times. In our team workouts, he pushes himself to the breaking point each day. His leadership is a valuable asset to this program and the younger players look up to him. An all-conference caliber player, Bastian has raised his level of play from last year and could be the big gun in the conference this season. As Bastian say, “we will see.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS Hannes is the returning LMU Newcomer and Male Athlete of the Year. He played undefeated at No. 1 last season and was an All-South Atlantic Conference player as a freshman. Hannes has a super game and possesses tactics. He is not simply a brute force tennis player. He has a smart game to go along with the fire-power and can unleash it when necessary. Hannes doesn’t say much on the court and lets his racquet do the talking. He is a leader on this year’s team and was an inspiration to watch in the fall tournaments. He will set the bar high this season for the Railsplitters.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Zack came to the Railsplitter tennis program last season after playing baseball for a year. Last year, the outcome of several of our matches came down to him winning his match. Zack has worked hard on getting back on track and he has become solid on both sides. He is a really good doubles player and will help the Railsplitters reach their potential in the 2009 spring season.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Gabor is a hard worker and trains hard. He is another solid player that brings in a great deal of match experience. Being a third-year player, Gabor began to come into his own this summer and during the fall. He is very strong and in good shape as he takes his fitness and conditioning extremely serious. Gabor has an allaround game on the court and is solid on both sides. I look forward to watching his performance this spring.”

He is the kind of player that every coach wants to have in that he does everything asked of him and never complains. His play will be stronger in 2009 as he improves his strength and speed. His improved play will benefit the Railsplitters in the future.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Corbett is a local product of Claiborne High School in Tazewell, Tennessee. He has hung in there on a team loaded with talent. Sometimes walk-ons are not ready to train at the college level, but Corbett has adapted and has found a way to improve his game. He won some matches in the fall tournaments and is on the right track for the 2009 spring season.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Andras is a third-year player and will enter the 2009 spring season in great physical condition. He is a dual-sport athlete and also runs cross country which helps him increase his level of conditioning to the top of the chart. Andras has improved a great deal since last season. He is a quiet worker that tries his hardest in every workout. He is also a solid player that will bring a lot of match experience to the court during the 2009 spring season.”

Turner Arena.

The camp will start each morning at 8:30 A.M. Pick up will be at 12:30 P.M. Things to bring-tennis racquet, tennis shoes, water bottle, towel, hat, sunscreen and snacks. Campers will be grouped according to age and ability. This means if the camper is advanced for his or her age, they will be moved to get adequate competition.

Camp will address grips, forehands, back hands, serves, volleys, slice, top spin, overheads, court position, foot work and on court strategy along with singles and doubles play.

The camp will be directed by Benny Collins, the new head coach for the men’s and women’s tennis programs at LMU. The rest of the teaching staff will be college players from Lincoln Memorial University tennis teams.

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Ann-Sophie comes to the Lady Railsplitter tennis program as a junior. Before transferring to LMU, she played tennis for Midwestern State University in Texas. Ann-Sophie is a strong, heavy hitter who is solid on both sides. She also has a big serve and a big forehand. She is another player that will add great strength to our line-up on the top-side. Ann-Sophie will be a tough opponent in the South Atlantic Conference this season. Her previous two seasons at Midwestern State should help her emerge as one of our league’s top players this year.”

She showed great promise in our fall tournaments and was very solid on both sides. She is a tough player who gives it her all in practice and in matches. Sophia already exhibits senior-type leadership and will be a tenacious opponent for opposing teams to contend with over the next four years.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Melanie is a freshman from Clay County Kentucky. A local high school standout, Melanie brings a solid game to our ladies program this season and is a tough, never-quit player. Melanie is solid on both sides and her game has elevated to a high level since fall practice started. She will be a tough match-up for our opponents in singles and doubles play over the next four years.”

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Mandy is a local product having grown up in Claiborne County, Tennessee. She attended high school at J. Frank White Academy, so she has been playing on the LMU courts for a long time. Mandy’s main weapon of choice is her backhand. With her height and reach, she covers a lot of court in doubles matches and has improved her game from last year. She will need to step up and play at a higher level this year for the Lady Railsplitters. She is very capable of the task at hand.”

Oliver injured her left wrist last golf season and has difficulty swinging a golf club, so she has picked up tennis and has made a remarkable transition to the game. Katie possesses amazing athletic abilities which have allowed her to make the change from golf to tennis very smoothly. Now she needs court experience to refine her game to make her transition complete.”

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 undergraduate areas of study and five graduate degrees and programs. It is also home to Tennessee’s newest medical school, the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, which admitted its first class in Fall 2007. LMU had a Fall 2009-09 fall enrollment of 3,365 students and employed 96 faculty members at the main campus and 11 extended campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

PRESIDENT/ATHLETICS DIRECTOR

PRESIDENT DR. NANCY MOODY Nancy B. Moody was born and raised in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Following graduation as an honor student from Middlesboro High School, she received degrees in nursing from Eastern Kentucky University. Other degrees were received after beginning her professional career at Lincoln Memorial University. While at LMU, Dr. Moody was involved with initial and continuing accreditation activities from the American Veterinary Medical Association, the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the National League for Nursing (NLN). She was indirectly involved with accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), but directly involved with the preparation of substantive change reports and visits from SACS following the development of off-campus nursing programs in Corbin, Kentucky, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Madisonville, Tennessee. She was directly involved with development of an R.N. to B.S.N. program, three off-campus programs, and programs in veterinary science. Dr. Moody has taught in associate, baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree programs in nursing. She has worked closely with faculty from the Colleges of Business, Public and Allied Health and Medicine to develop interdisciplinary courses and a certificate program in health care management. She has taught in private higher education, and in both statewide systems of higher education in Tennessee, the Tennessee Board of Regents and the University of Tennessee. Dr. Moody serves as a program evaluator and peer review panel member for the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission, as a research grant reviewer for the NLN and is a peer panel reviewer for Nursing and Health Care Perspectives. She has published in the Tennessee Nurse, the Journal of Professional Nursing, the Journal of Nursing Administration, the Nurse Practitioner and in Clinical Excellence for Nurse Practitioners. She has presented or is scheduled to present locally, regionally and nationally on nursing work force issues at conferences sponsored by the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the National Association of Student Nurses, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, the Rural Health Association of Tennessee, the Southern Regional Education Board, the Southern Nursing Research Society and the Tennessee Nurses Association. Since 1994, she has garnered approximately $1 million in grants and contracts to study work force issues in Tennessee. In terms of leadership, Dr. Moody has served as department chairperson, dean and executive director of an organization that was incorporated and became recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501[c]3 organization. In the latter capacity, she has been directly involved in the conduct of state-wide meetings, worked with a multidisciplinary state-wide group, represented the organization at state and national meetings, appeared before state boards, developed contracts with individuals and agencies, garnered donations, and written and administered grants for the organization. She and her husband Tom have two children, Adam and Mykel. Before moving to the President’s Home in Harrogate, the Moodys lived in Knoxville, Tennessee.

ATHLETICS DIRECTOR ROGER VANNOY Following the 2006-07 women’s basketball season, Roger Vannoy had served as Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s basketball coach for a quarter of a century. During that time he amassed a 453-245 record, earning a spot among the top-20 NCAA Division II active coaches of that time. A life-long native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy’s background in athletics dates back to his days as a high school coach at the former Powell Valley High School. Since that time he has coached 15 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and five All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirement from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season afforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve the institution from which he graduated in 1975. Vannoy and his wife Pam reside in Harrogate and have two daughters, Morgane and Whitney.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 32nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Intercollegiate Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, allsports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tournaments. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University became the league’s newest member. Brevard College was admitted in 2007 as a provisional member. The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, NC; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC.
