LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH Dan Burns

A native of Kettering, Ohio, Burns began his career at Lincoln Memorial University in the fall of 1970 where he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball. While playing for the legendary Dean Bailey, Burns was a standout in both sports and was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University Athletes Hall of Fame in 2003 for his collegiate contributions. In 1976, he accepted the position of assistant baseball coach and four years later became head coach when Bailey made the decision to retire after 31 years at the helm of the Railsplitter baseball program. From 1981 to 1987, Burns served as the skipper of the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program, served as athletics director from 1987 to 1988 and as director of campus and community recreation from 1989 to 1995. In 1995, Burns again returned to the diamond, this time as head coach of the Lady Railsplitter softball program. Although this was his first experience coaching women’s collegiate softball, his knowledge of the game shined on the field and his teams soon made their presence known thoughout the Gulf South Conference. In only his second season with the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters reached the 1996 GSC Tournament Championship losing to eventual champion Alabama-Huntsville. During Burns’ 14 years as head coach of the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters have made eight trips to the conference tournament and produced 24 all-conference players, one Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American and two Daktronics All-Americans. In addition, Burns ranks as one of the nation’s winningest active coaches with a career record of 441 wins, 312 losses and one tie going into the 2009 season. Burns is a 1974 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University. He currently resides in Harrogate with his wife, Regina and their three children - Josh, Victoria and Gavin.

ASSISTANT COACH Tiffany Edgar

Edgar enters her second season as the assistant coach for the LMU softball program. Tiffany came to LMU from East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, North Carolina, where she was head coach for three years. Before taking over the helm of the Cavalier program, Edgar played for the University of Toledo and was an NFCA Scholar Athlete, receiving the MAC Presidential Award. During her last year with the Rockets, Edgar received the honor of having an award named after her. The Edgar Excellence Award is given to a senior at the end of each season who exemplifies good citizenship, solid academics and excels athletically. Edgar is a native of Tecumseh, Michigan. She is married to Brian DeJonghe, a football and wreslting coach at Broadway High School in Broadway, Virginia.

2008 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK THE 2007 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

The Lady Railsplitters will be a young team in 2009. There are no seniors on the squad and only two juniors so the future looks good for the next couple of years. This team is loaded with eight excellent freshmen and all of them will get to play this year. But this leads to a weakness, a lack of experience. A great strength is the return of Sara Henn. An AllAmerican at third base last season, she is rewriting the record books at LMU. Fellow junior Devin Sponseller will handle the catching duties. Devin, a good hitter and catcher, will be looking to have an All-Conference year. The outfield will be solid. Sophomores Michelle Breen, Jackie Adams and Sammy Jo Garrett all have great speed that can create a lot of excitement in the line-up. The infield will have to work hard to keep us in games. Henn will handle third base while freshmen Joy Grills and Bridget Eicher will compete at shortstop. Second base will belong to All-SAC player Mira McPeek with Meg Ryan getting in some time there as well. A number of people will get a chance at first base. Ashley Knight will compete with power hitter Brooklynn Jimison, Brittany Stuive and Kris Landenburg. Four pitchers, all freshmen, will compete for time in the circle. Jimison, Landenburg, Stuive and Chelley Christian have no college experience but all are capable of leading the Lady Railsplitters to a successful season. Alana Brandehoff will be a true utility player, playing the outfield, catching and running the bases. Freshman Meagan Effler will work behind the plate and hold down the bull-pen for the pitching staff. This should be an interesting year for the young LMU squad because with their youth anything could happen. The South Atlantic Conference should not take this team lightly for they are capable of winning it all this year.

DOROTHY NEELY FIELD The Dorothy Neely field has been the home of the Lady Railsplitters since the 1990 season. The field complex seats approximately 350 people in bleacher seats, sideline benches and open areas for lawn chairs. The dimensions are 200 feet down the lines and 215 to center field. The playing surface is Bermuda grass. Batting cages and a bullpen are adjacent to the field, and teams can also use the baseball field cages and bullpen if needed. There is also a press box / storage facility along the right infield base path which includes space for scoreboard and statistical operations as well as equipment storage and a changing room. The dugouts are enclosed, and there are safety fences in the front to help protect players, coaches and staff from stray balls. Lights were installed in 2003, and several night games are scheduled each year. The Lady Railsplitters first played on the field on March 28, 1990, when they hosted former TVAC foe Milligan College. LMU won both games by scores of 4-3 and 8-5. Prior to that, home games were played on a part of the old LMU farm (the playing site is now included in the Harrogate City Park.) The field was officially dedicated on May 12, 1990.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 111th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2008 enrollment was 3,365 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and ten extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR ROGER VANNOY

Following the 2006-07 women’s basketball season, Roger Vannoy had served as Lincoln Memorial University’s women’s basketball coach for a quarter of a century. During that time he amassed a 453-245 record, earning a spot among the top-20 NCAA Division II active coaches of that time. A life-long native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy’s background in athletics dates back to his days as a high school coach at the former Powell Valley High School. Since that time he has coached 15 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and five All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirement from the coaching ranks following the 2006-07 season afforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve the institution from which he graduated in 1975. Vannoy and his wife Pam reside in Harrogate and have two daughters, Morgane and Whitney. 2009 LMU Softball

THESOUTH SOUTHATLANTIC ATLANTICCONFERENCE CONFERENCE THE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 32nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Intercollegiate Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, allsports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s

golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women’s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal art colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA tournaments. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University became the league’s newest member. Brevard College was admitted in 2007 as a provisional member. The league membership now includes Brevard College in Brevard, NC; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN; Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC; Newberry College in Newberry, SC; Tusculum College in Greeneville, TN; and Wingate University in Wingate, NC.
