2010-11 RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK The 2010-11 season will be one of the most anticipated in school history, as Lincoln Memorial University not only returns four starters and eight of their top 10 scorers from last year’s record setting team, but welcome a highly regarded recruiting class in as well. The Railsplitters are coming off of an NCAA school record 20 win season in 2009-10 and much of their success in the 2010-11 season will rest with their strong core of returning players, headlined by Preseason All-American D’Mario Curry. Curry, a two time First Team All-South Atlantic Conference selection, returns for his senior season on the heels of a record breaking junior campaign in which he set the single season conference rebounding mark with 312, as well as the single game rebounding mark with 22 against Mars Hill. Curry led LMU for the second consecutive year in scoring (16.9) rebounding (11.1) blocks (3.4) and steals (41) while ranking in the top 10 in the nation in both shot blocks and rebounds per game. Joining Curry among the returning starters is Desmond Johnson. Johnson who was the 2008-09 SAC Freshman of the Year and a 2009-10 preseason All-SAC second team selection, returns to team up with Curry on the inside for a third consecutive season. Johnson has ranked second to Curry the last two seasons in points, rebounds and blocks per game. As a sophomore, the Lynch, Kentucky native averaged 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Junior guard Brandon Armstrong returns after his sophomore season in which he averaged 9.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Armstrong also ranked among the league leaders in three point shots made and three point percentage. Sophomore Wally Jones is the fourth returning starter after a freshman year in which he finished second in the SAC in three point shooting (45.0). Jones also averaged 6.1 points and 2.0 rebounds per game during the 09-10 season. Other returners include sophomore Cameron Carden who averaged 7.0 points per game while making 47 of 116 three point shots (41.2). Junior guard Justin Allen (6.0 points, 3.0 rebounds per game) returns, as does junior guard Carlos Sanford who averaged 4.3 points per contest while handing out 57 assists. Also returning for the Railsplitters are junior forward Tony Martin (1.5 pts and 1.1 rebounds) and senior Josh Stanley (3.0 pts per game). The class of newcomers is headlined by junior guard Darryl Garrett 6’4, who comes to LMU from Eastern Michigan University where he averaged 11.9 pts and 3.7 rebounds per game as a freshman. Senior forward Sheldon Oliver transfers in after spending the last three seasons at Stetson University. During his career at Stetson, Oliver appeared in 93 games, starting 51. He scored 553 points and pulled down 401 rebounds in his three seasons at Stetson. Senior point guard Kierre Jordan transferred in from Pfeiffer University after averaging 9.8 points for the Falcons last season. The rest of the recruiting class includes three freshmen. Vincent Bailey, a 6’6” forward from Jennings, Florida, 6’0 point guard Farooq Davis of Indianapolis, Indiana and 6’2 combo guard Chance Jones from Knoxville, Tennessee. 2010-11 LMU Railsplitter Basketball

JOSH SCHERTZ HEAD COACH
3rd Season
A man of vision who has helped set school record win totals at each institution he has worked for, Lincoln Memorial University head coach Josh Schertz has brought to LMU basketball a commitment to building the total program. His uncompromising dedication to excellence in every phase of the basketball program has already resulted in a school NCAA record 20 wins in 2009-10. This past season produced numerous firsts for the program including first 20 win season, first Conference Tournament Win and first regional ranking as LMU stayed in the top eight of the Southeast regional poll the last seven weeks. That comes on the heels of his first season where he inherited a team that had won just one South Atlantic Conference game and just seven games overall. With eight freshman and 11 newcomers, Schertz guided the Railsplitters to eight conference wins and doubled the overall win total from seven to 14. During his two seasons as head coach, the Railsplitters have led the South Atlantic Conference and finished in the top 10 nationally in field goal percentage defense with the 09-10 squad ranking second nationally in the category. The 2009-10 Railsplitters led the South Atlantic Conference in field goal offense (48.1) assists per game (16.55) three point shots made (212), and finished second in scoring offense (81.9). LMU also led the league in scoring margin (+13.4), rebounding margin (+8.0) and blocked shots (6.07) His success on the recruiting trail over the last 11 years has led to unparalled success for every program he has been involved with. High Point University (22), Queens University (29) and Lynn University (29) also set school record win totals during his tenure. On court success has led to off court honors as Schertz recruits have earned: two National Players of the Year Awards, three Conference Players of the Year, four Conference Freshman of the Year, three freshman All-Americans and nine First Team All-Conference selections. Schertz’s commitment to academic integrity is shown by the fact that 42 out of 43 recruits to finish their eligibility under him have graduated and his two seasons as head coach here at LMU have seen all four seniors not only graduate, but each are currently enrolled in masters degree programs. Schertz comes to LMU after serving as the associate head coach at High Point University for the last five seasons. During this time High Point posted it’s five best seasons at the Division 1 level consecutively, highlighted by the 2006-07 season in which High Point posted a 22-10 record despite having only one senior. Schertz helped the Panthers establish school records for wins in a season, conference wins, road wins, and highest Rating Percentage Index. High Point won 87 games in the five years Schertz was on staff. They won a total of 47 games in the five seasons before his arrival. HPU players also thrived in the classroom as 16 out of the 17 players who finished their eligibility graduated during the last five years. While at High Point Schertz signed three top ranked recruiting classes in the Big South, and his 2005 recruiting class ranked in the top 35 nationally according to (Hoopscoop). During Schertz’s tenure as recruiting coordinator two players, Danny Gathings in 2004, and AZ Reid in 2007 and 2008, earned Big South Conference Player of the Year honors a total of three times and were both named Division I All-Americans. He also signed three players, Reid 2005, Justin Dunn 2006 and Eugene Harris 2007, who went to earn all freshman team honors at HPU. Prior to coming to High Point, Schertz served as the associate head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina, helping lead the Royals to a two-year mark of 49-14 including a school record 29-4 mark in 2003. That 2003 season culminated in the school’s first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four. As the program’s recruiting coordinator, Schertz made a huge impact signing 2004 National Division II Player of the Year Spencer Ross along with two-time national shot block leader Moustapha Diouf and 2003 CVAC Freshman of the Year Kendrick Harris. Schertz also served as a professor in the Queens’ physical education department and was the head coach of Queens’ junior varsity program. Before joining Queens, Schertz spent two years at Lynn University (Fla.) serving as the Fighting Knights recruiting coordinator. He helped guide Lynn to a 37-18 mark as well as a top five national ranking. While at Lynn, Schertz signed 2001 National Division II Freshman of the Year Leandro GarciaMorales. His final signing class before moving to Queens may have been his lasting legacy as the five-man group went on to become the most successful group of players in Lynn history. That group included James Taylor (all-time leading scorer) Justin Wingard (all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker) Austin Faber (all-time leader in assists and steals) and Akil Lewis (all-time leader in made three-pointers), who as seniors formed the nucleus of Lynn’s school record-setting squad that tallied 29 wins and earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2005. Schertz signed two players named Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, Garcia-Morales (2001) and Taylor (2002), as well as four players who went on to earn all-conference honors. Schertz began his career as an assistant coach at his alma mater Florida Atlantic University where he spent one season working under Kevin Billerman. Schertz also served as an assistant to current Florida Gators associate head coach Larry Shyatt for the 2001 Maccabi Games. Schertz, a 2000 graduate of Florida Atlantic University, also has a master’s in education from Lynn University. Coach Schertz has two sons, Jordan (14) and Jaden (8) and is married to the former Natalia Ceballos. They reside in Harrogate, TN.

HISTORY
OF THE
SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

LMU not only had a new coach at the start of the 1929 school season, they also had a conference. The Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference (SMAC) was formed in the summer of 1929. The Railsplitters would be in the SMAC until it disbanded in the early 1960’s

With the entry of America into World War II on Dec. 8, 1941, small colleges like LMU lost most of their male students to the services. The SMAC followed suit and halted play until the end of the war. Some schools, like Milligan and CarsonNewman, became Naval training colleges (with classifications like V-5 and V-12). Because of this, most schools put athletics on hold until the end of the war. LMU and a few other schools tried to keep athletics going. One example is Mars Hill, where all but one of the male students on campus were on the basketball team and the coach was a woman. With the end of the war in August, 1945, things slowly began to return to “normal” and schools resumed their athletic programs.

The 1948-49 season had a lot of “firsts.” LMU had a new coach in Dean Bailey, who played against the Railsplitters in football, basketball and baseball while a student at East Tennessee State. They had a new permanent gym in the Mary Mars Gymnasium. They had a new conference with the VSAC adding regular season games (the Volunteer State Athletic Conference had been founded in 1947 and LMU won the first title in the tournament, but the 48-49 season was the first with a full VSAC schedule.) And this season also saw LMU’s first national postseason appearance in the NAIB (which was the basketball portion of the NAIA ) Tournament.

TEX TURNER ARENA The B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The arena replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. The 87,000 square foot complex seats 5,009 for basketball contests, with another 1,000 portable seats available for other events. The distance from the playing floor to the roof is 40 feet, the equivalent of a two-story building. The arena is 230 feet (east to west) and 282 feet (north to south). It contains over 81,866 square feet of floor space, and over 4 million cubic feet of space. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. Over the years, several concerts as well as district and regional tournaments have been held in the arena. The LMU spring and fall commencement services and pinning ceremonies have been held there since 1991. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, softball and volleyball. Also located on the lower level are the athletic training offices, the university press and the university post office. The LMU Athletes Hall-ofFame, the Turner Room and a classroom are also located on the lower level and are often used by campus and community groups for meetings and other functions. The recently refurbished athletic training room and weight room are located on the lower level within easy access of the playing floor and air-conditioned dressing rooms. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, The Railsplitters in the Turner Arena south and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance 1991-present -- 164-97 doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both 1990-91 -- 2-3* 2001-02 -- 8-3 levels). 1991-92 -- 10-5 2002-03 -- 12-0 The arena was named after former LMU football 1992-93 -- 12-1 2003-04 -- 3-8 1993-94 -- 13-2 2004-05 -- 3-8 standout B. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 113th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,445 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
