2010 RAILSPLITTER TENNIS SEASON OUTLOOK

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS With All-South Atlantic Conference performers Hannes Ganss and Bastian Guenther returning both at 100% and the addition of Philipp Hoffmann, the Railsplitters should bring a high-powered game to the courts when the 2010 schedule gets underway in February. Gannss and Guether played the no. 1 and no. 2 positions last season for the Railsplitters and both will battle with Hoffmann for the top spot this year, thus making the top of the LMU men’s lineup extremely lethal. Add to the top of the order the play of Tom Goossens, Gabor Heredi-Sazbo, Zack Jones and Andras Pauko who have all raised their level of play in the off-season and the Railsplitters should be as strong from top to bottom as they have been in recent memory. The success of the 2010 Lincoln Memorial University men’s tennis team will depend upon how quickly the Railsplitters are able to gel as a team and attack what proves to be one of the most competitive schedules in many years.

THE 2010 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

The Lady Railsplitters return all six starters from a year ago and will be led by All-South Atlantic Conference performers Sophia Lopez-Mimendi and Ann-Sophie Indeherberge. Both have made vast improvements to their game in the off-season and are expected to carry the torch for the Lady Railsplitters again this season. New additions to the LMU women’s lineup include freshman Leah Donoff who possesses all-conference potential and adds more power to an already strong front end of the order. This should allow the Lady Railsplitters to win many of their close matches and be very competitive in the South Atlantic Conference race. In addition to the Lady Railsplitters returning power and strong newcomer at the top of the lineup, the LMU women will have more depth this year in the back half of the order. The addition of freshman Morgan Taylor who will compete with returning players Katie Oliver, Melanie Smith, Emily Osborne, Amanda Horenkamp and Mandy Mills will make the Lady Railsplitters extremely deep and much stronger at the four, five and six positions. Although the Lady Railsplitters have three seniors on the roster this season, youth will be the biggest issue for the 2010 team. The no. 1 thru no. 4 positions will be made up of all freshman and sophmores while, the five and six spots could change throughout the year. Only time will tell how this youg lineup will adjust.

COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH BENNY COLLINS

A native of nearby Middlesboro, Kentucky, Collins served as head coach at Middlesboro High School from the Spring 2000 until the end of Spring 2008, tallying an overall record of 153-18 with the girls program which includes five regional titles and three regional runners-up honors. With the Yellow Jacket boys program, Collins amassed a record of 109-37 during that period and was regional runner-up with the program two times. “I’m excited to take over the LMU tennis programs,” said Collins. “The University is building a new tennis facility and will build an indoor facility in the future. With these facilities in place and the growth of the University, LMU tennis should get back on the national map quickly.” Collins takes the helm of two collegiate tennis programs that made the South Atlantic Conference Tournament final-four in 2008. The Lady Railsplitters finished the 2008 season with a record of 8-9, including a 4-3 conference record, while the Railsplitters were 4-11 and went 1-6 in the conference.

Coach Collins & his wife Debbie

GRADUATE ASSISTANT COACH MARTINA REZIC-SCHAPMAN

A standout player for the Lady Railsplitters from 2006-2008, Schapman returns to her alma mater as a graduate assistant this year. During her career at LMU, Rezic was named to the All-South Atlantic Conference Second Team. Schapman is married to former LMU men’s basketball player Adam Schapman.

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS

TOM GOOSSENS

Height: 6’0” Weight: 160 lbs. Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Moerbeke-Waas, Belgium Last School Attended: Sint-Laurens Intituut

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Tom comes back for his sophomore season with a year of college experience under his belt. He is strong and hits with lots of power but possesses great touch on the ball. Tom is also a very good doubles player and I expect him to make a big contribution to the success of the Railsplitter lineup this year.”

BASTIAN GUENTHER

Height: 6’1” Weight: 184 lbs. Class: Junior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Erlangen, Germany Last School Attended: Albert-Schweitzer Gymnasium

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Bastian returns after finishing the 2008-09 season with a First Team All-South Atlantic Conference performance. He started out at the no. 1 position and ended up at the no. 2 spot before year’s end. Bastian works very hard in practice and his has elivated from last year. He will again be a force to deal with this season. I believe he will help lead the team this year, playing one of the top-3 positions while pushing everyone to work harder in practices and in matches.”

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS

HANNES GANSS

Height: 6’6” Weight: 194 lbs. Class: Junior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Erlangen, Germany Last School Attended: Emmy-Noether Gymnasium

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “The big man is coming back this year 100% healthy. He had a torn labrum during the 2008 fall seasonand started out slowlyin the spring due to the injury. Eventually he made it back to the no. 1 position and again earned First Team AllSouth Atlantic Conference honors by year’s end. Hannes possesses a game that is hard for opponents to overcome. He just usually hits the right shot in most situations and has big firepower when he needs it. Hannes is also a great leader. This is a valuable assett to the team when he is healthy and can lead by example. Ganss will play at the one of the top three positions this season and will be a solid doubles player with senior Zack Jones.”

ZACK JONES

Height: 5’9” Weight: 160 lbs. Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Murfreesboro, Tennessee Last School Attended: Siegel High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “This season will make Zack’s third year on the Railsplitter tennis team and he has become a valuable assett. Zack has worked hard on his game and was last year’s team captain. He is a very good doubles player and really understands the doubles arena. Zack will see playing time in both singles and doubles play but his senior leadership will be a big contributing factor to the Railsplitter in every way.”

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS

GABOR HEREDI-SZABO

Height: 5’11” Weight: 186 lbs. Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Kecskemet, Hungary Last School Attended: Nemeth Laszlo Gimnazium

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Gabor is another player that raised his level of play over the summer and in the fall. His game looks stronger and he works very hard in practice. I believe he will come through in tough matches this spring. He played very solid during the fall schedule and hopefully that will carry over into our conference play this year. Szabo is very determined to be in top shape for his final year of collegiate tennis. His experience will help lead the Railsplitters to a higher level of play this year.”

ANDREW BATES

Height: 5’6” Weight: 145 lbs. Class: Junior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Walton, Kentucky Last School Attended: Larry A. Ryle High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Andrew enters his third year with the Lincoln Memorial University tennis program. Since he arrive two years ago, his game has steadily improved. Andrew works hard in practice and has improved his game. Time will tell if he can break into the Railsplitter lineup this season.”

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS

PHILIPP HOFFMANN

Height: 5’8” Weight: 150 lbs. Class: Freshman Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Karlsruhe, Germany Last School Attended: Otto-Hahn-Gymnasium, Karlsruhe

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Philipp may be the missing piece of the puzzle the Railsplitters have been looking for. He has a big time game and can flat play! He has all the tools and has achieved a high player ranking. Philipp should be a top-2 player. If he moves to the top, that bumps everyone else down and will make us very strong as a team. Physically he is very strong, quick and will be a tough opponent for anyone he faces this year. Hoffmann’s addition should make the Railsplitters a solid contender for the conference regular season and tournament titles this season.”

CORBETT SMITH

Height: 6’1” Weight: 180 lbs. Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Tazewell, Tennessee Last School Attended: Claiborne High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Corbett is a local player that grew up here in Claiborne County. He has raised his level of play over the past year and show much improvement. Corbett is a great guy and one of those players you love to have in your program. He has adapted to the college level of training and continues to improve steadily every day.”

THE 2010 RAILSPLITTERS

ANDRAS PAUKO

Height: 5’11” Weight: 168 lbs. Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Budapest, Hungary Last School Attended: Szilagyi Erzsebet High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Andras is a senior and is a dual-sport athlete, running cross country in the fall and playing tennis in the spring. During the preseason, his game appears to be stronger and he is willing to do whatever asked of him to make the team more successful. He is a hard worker and always enters each season in great physical condition. Andras will be a solid player for the team again this season.”

THE 2010 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Ann-Sophie Indeherberge

Height: 5’2” Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Zonhoven, Belgium Last School Attended: KaII Sport Humaniora Hasselt

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Ann-Sophie enters her senior year coming off of an all-conference performance last season. She is very strong and has improved her overall athletic ability. Ann-Sophie has more sting for the upcoming season. She is a very good doubles player and combined with Lopez, the two will be hard for opponents to defeat. Ann-Sophie will again be among the top-3 singles players on the squad and will team up with Lopez at the no. 1 doubles position. I am looking for a big senior season from Ann-Sophie.”

Sofia Lopez Mimendi Height: 5’1” Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Mexico City, Mexico Last School Attended: Tec ITESM

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Sofia returns from an all-conference year as a freshman. She will help lead the Lady Railsplitters with her tenacious play and works very hard on improving her game. In practice, her attitude matches the play she exhibits in match play. Sofia is a natural leader and does so by example. She has returned for her sophomore season stronger that ever and with more bite in her game. This will make things even harder for the opponents she faces this season. A dual-sport athlete who also runs cross country, she is in excellent shape and I look for her to repeat as an all-conference performer again this season. Sofia will play a big roll for us this year, both as a player and as a leader.”

THE 2010 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Melanie Smith

Height: 5’6” Class: Sophomore Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Manchester, Kentucky Last School Attended: Clay County High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Melanie enters her sophomore season with a solid year of collegiate tennis under her belt. She has worked hard in the off-season and has raised the bar on her level of play. She plays with more confidence and bill see playing time in the four, five and six singles positions as well as doubles. Melanie is the kind of player that always gives 110% and never complains. She will be a solid part of the puzzle this season.”

Mandy Mills

Height: 5’8” Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Tazewell, Tennessee Last School Attended: J. Frank White Academy

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Mandy is entering her senior season at Lincoln Memorial University. She is a local product, having played her prep career at the J. Frank White Academy. Mandy has worked on her game in the off-season and has improved a great deal. She will compete for playing time and the four, five or six position in singles. Her height and reach could work to her advantage when playing in doubles as it will make things tough for oppoents to get shot past her at the net.”

THE 2010 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Katy Oliver

Height: 5’3” Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Major: Hometown: Bournemouth, England Last School Attended: Cawford School Parents: Bill & Sue Oliver

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Katie returns for her senior season after making the transition from golf to tennis last year. Last season, Katie won some tough matches for us at the no. 4 singles position and will be in the hunt for playing time this year at the four, five or six singles spot. She is a smart player and a solid athlete that gives her all every time on the court. If she stays healthy, Katie will help the team a great deal as she has raised her level of play from last year.”

Amanda Horenkamp

Height: 5’8” Class: Senior Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Murfreesboro, Tennessee Last School Attended: Siegel High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Amanda is a first-year player having played volleyball at LMU for four years as an All-South Atlantic Conference performer. Amanda is an amazing athlete. Each day in practice, her game gets stronger and stonger. It’s going to be hard for her teammates to keep her out of the lineup. Amanda will be looking for playing time in the four, five or six singles positions. She is easy to coach and learns very quickly. I believe she will help up in many ways this year.”

THE 2010 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

Morgan Taylor

Height: Class: Freshman Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Gate City, Virginia Last School Attended: Gate City High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Morgan comes to the Lady Railsplitter program after an impressive high school career at nearby Gate City High School in Virginia. She has the game that all opponents dread, as she returns every ball. Morgan has a lot of athletic ability and uses it as one of her strengths. She will be competing for playing time this season at the four, five and six positions in singles and will see time on the court in doubles play. I see Morgan as a steady player in our lineup that will usually have the score card in her favor. She could be a big impact on our program this season.”

Leah Donoff

Height: Class: Freshman Strong Hand: Right Hometown: Tipp City High, Ohio Last School Attended: Tippecanoe High School

COLLINS’ COMMENTS “Leah comes to the Lady Railsplitters after a stellar prep career. A freshman with a very big game, Leah was a top-ranked player in Ohio on the high school level and had a very solid national ranking in the midwest. She is an extremely tough player on the court who moves in and takes the ball early which immediatly puts pressure on the opponent. Her attacking style will be a welcomed asset to the team as she is expected to complete for one, two or three postions in singles. Leah is the player we need to make the Lady Railsplitters a true threat. I see her having a great year at one of the top singles and doubles positions.”

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 112th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 undergraduate areas of study and five graduate degrees and programs. It is also home to Tennessee’s newest medical school, the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine, which admitted its first class in Fall 2007. LMU had a Fall 2009-09 fall enrollment of 3,948 students and employed 96 faculty members at the main campus and 11 extended campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

The SouTh ATlAnTic conference THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 33nd year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University will become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of nine private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play.
