HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna, or simply Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his eighth season as head coach of the LMU soccer program after helping the men’s team capture two a South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament title in 2007, back-to-back Appalachian Region titles in 2006 and 2007, and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. The 2007 season run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 to Franklin Pirece. The Railsplitters also have clinched conference titles in 2004 and 2005. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to the Lincoln Memorial University program. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named MidSouth Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His soccer background also includes coaching and instructing at clinics and internships such as São Paulo Club (former back-to-back world champions), Clemson University Soccer Camp, Post-to-Post Soccer, Brazilian Soccer Academy, BRUSA, Brazilian Soccer Training Center and Cincinnati-Brazil Soccer. ASSISTANT COACHES/TEAM PHYSICIAN Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes

Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions as a player and as a coach were evident in LMU’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins, a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four and their 2007 national championship appearance. As anassistant coach, de Moraes brought to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that was second to none. Now as the LMU soccer program’s full-time assistant coach, de Moraes is ready to jump into his duties with both feet in an effort to get the Railsplitters back to national prominence.

Graduate Assistant Coach Ian Richardson Following a successful playing career at LMU, Ian begins his second year as graduate assistant coach at his alma mater. A native of North Lanarkshire, Scotland, Richardson was a smooth player with a very steady personality on and off the field. Now as a coach, he plans to translate his experiences that built a solid winning tradition for the Railsplitters into a new streak of accomplishments.

Team Physician Dr. Howard Teitelbaum Dr. Howard Teitelbaum enters his fourth season as the team physician for the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer program. Dr. Teitelbaum is professor of medicine at the University’s DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before coming to LMU, Teitelbaum coached soccer at the high school level in the State of California and was also a soccer referee and officiated at the college and professional level. Teitelbaum served as the state director of referee instruction for the State of Michigan for the United States Soccer Federation and is still a standing member of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK The LMU men’s soccer team has a rich tradition. Every new generation that arrives at LMU embraces the legacy and history of the program, but also inherits the pressure and expectations. This year will be no different. But the good news is that both the returning class and the incoming new class are deep and strong. They can handle this pressure and certainly have all the skills to deliver another great year. The group is confident because they feel they did their “homework” this past spring and summer. They are also committed and united and that is as important as having the talent. Our roster has at least two players for every position on the field. We also have a great combination of experience and youth. We are capable of changing formations and the way we play as necessary: we can go big, with high pressure, or counter attack with quickness. We should have a strong right and left flank, a solid defense, and a very threatening attack. We will also have a strong midfield, a trademark of the program. Our leadership will also be strong and our veterans are hungry to finish their college career on a high note. Although in theory we return a large number of our starters, we will have several position up for grabs, and that will create a healthy internal competition, keeping everyone on their toes. Our schedule is really strong this year with 14 regional games. This will allow us to be in striking range for an at large bid for nationals. We already open with a key regional game and start in conference after just 3 games. Pre-season will be essential to allow us to hit the groung running. Our usual conference foes will be key matches (Carson Newman, Tusculum, Catawba, Wingate, and Lenoir Rhyne), as will the up and coming programs in the conference. Out of conference, Young Harris, Alabama Huntsville, Clayton State, and Lees McRae will be great challenges as well. Key returners include Mike Watkins in goal, Lucas Pereira on defense, Greg Lewandowski, Aaron McKenna, Fernando Silveira in the middle, and Jimmy Vandenhurk upfront. But high contributors such as Tom Clark, Chris Nash, James McLeish, Andrew Bayerl and Robbie Curtis are also crucial players. But all returners and all incoming players are expected to make important contributions. The team is good enough not only to contend in conference, but also to qualify and go deep into the post-season. They want to maintain the legacy and to keep the story going in 2010.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE Key Dates in SAC History

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th yeas of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, N.C. became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, GardnerWebb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999).

 1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed when six schools broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference  1961 – Newberry joins league. Conference changes name to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC)  1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed as football league with eight schools, called the SAC-8.  1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry  1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference  1996 – Newberry rejoins conference  1998 – Tusculum joins conference  2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference  2007 – Brevard joins conference  2010 – Anderson joins conference

The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University joined the league, followed by Brevard College in 2007. Anderson University became the league’s tenth member in 2010. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal & civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 113th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2009 enrollment was 3,948 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and extended-learning sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
