2010 SEASON PREVIEW The 2009 season was another historical one for the Lady Railsplitter volleyball team. The team picked up a school-record 10 victories in South Atlantic Conference matches, earned a second straight trip to the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament and the program’s highest-ever regional ranking. Three ladies were named All-Conference with one of those also being named AllRegion. The 2010 season brings about a lot of uncertainty as there will be several new faces and a very demanding schedule that will have the team on the road for most of September. The schedule features eight teams that made the NCAA Tournament and seven teams that were regionally ranked last season. Four seniors want to continue a run that started in 2008 and leave their stamp on the Lady Railsplitter program. Look for Lia Bevins to play a bigger role with her passing and defense. Lauren Kiwacka was second team All-SAC last season and is looking to once again be among the national leaders in triple-doubles. Ashley Knight hopes to make this season her finest, while Jenice Wilson has an opportunity to be a contributor in the middle. Candace Richardson, a second team All-SAC performer last year, is looking to take her game up a notch this season. She will be joined in the junior class by newcomers Jennifer Drumm and Kaitlin Posnak. Sophomores Megan Bell, Kristen Cantrell and Brittany Pugh will be looking to make more of a splash this year. Blaire Fowler will add to this group. Two freshmen hoping to make immediate contributions are Chelsea Ferron and Kaitlin Walton.

COACHING STAFF MIKE SMITH Head Coach The Lady Railsplitter volleyball team having back to back banner years was a terrific feat. Reaching milestones has also been a constant theme. Taking care of some unfinished business was a priority. In 2009 the Lady Railsplitters finished third in the South Atlantic Conference and had 10 conference wins, both accomplishments were new highs for the program. A second straight trip to the NCAA Southeast Regional tournament was the cap to a very good season. The 2010 season will feature some familiar faces and several new ones coming into the fold. A tough schedule along with some players taking on more responsibilities will make this season a tough challenge. During Smith’s 16 seasons at the helm, his teams have won 20+ matches twelve times and hold a 61.2 winning percentage. The Lady Railsplitters have made seven postseason appearances, two appearances in the NCAA Tournament and had 17 players named all-conference, academic all-conference or freshman of the year. One of his players was named American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Week, and another was named AVCA and Daktronics All-Region twice during her career. The 1999 and 2008 squads received a team award from the AVCA for their academic achievement. Coach Smith is currently ranked in the top 30 in the NCAA Division II in victories and third amongst SAC coaches in total career wins with 328. During the summer months, Smith enjoys promoting and teaching volleyball. He spends many hours on the road conducting camps all over the region for middle and high school players. Originally from Manchester, Kentucky, Smith was a member of the baseball program at Lincoln Memorial University. He received his bachelor’s degree in athletic training/health in 1992 and his master’s degree in education administration and supervision in 1994. In addition to his coaching duties, Smith serves as the Lincoln Memorial University athletics compliance officer and assistant Athletic Director. He is married to the former Katy Stanley and they have one daughter, Mary Kathryn.

Coach Smith picked up his 300th career victory with the 3-0 win over Kentucky State on October 21. Here Athletic Director Roger Vannoy presents Smith with a commemorative ball before the November 4 match against Carson-Newman. WWW.LMURAILSPLITTERS.COM

JASON PABON

Student Assistant Coach Jason returns for a second season with the Lady Railsplitters after helping the team reach the NCAA Tournament in 2009. A native of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, Jason played club volleyball in his youth. He works with the setters and has been instrumental in the development of the LMU passing game last season. Jason’s enthusiasm and attention to detail are influential to the team. He has a humerous side to his coaching but his competitive sprit is second to none.

ALICIA “Mac” MACINTYRE

Student Assistant Coach

Alicia joins the coaching ranks after a three-year stint on the team. Mac brings determination, enthusiasm, and a defnsive mentality to the players that could pay big dividends. Her primary responsibilities will be passing and defense. The Muncie, Indiana, native played three seasons (2007-09) for the Lady Railsplitters. She accumulated 1,449 digs during her career aand was named allconference in 2008, earning spots on the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional and SAC All-Tournament teams. She will be completing her degree in communications this fall.

LMU ATHLETE’S HALL OF FAME

The LMU Athletes’ Hall of Fame was founded in 1981 and the first class of 46 was inducted during homecoming activities that year. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to identify and honor those athletes that developed outstanding skills and represented LMU in a wholesome manner. The original location of the Hall of Fame display was in the Mars Gym but with the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the Hall moved to the current location.

MARY E. MARS GYMNASIUM The LMU volleyball team plays all of its home matches in the historic Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, the home of LMU volleyball since the program came into existence in 1989. Since 1992, the Lady Railsplitters have compiled a 148-72 record, good for a .673 winning percentage in 18 seasons of play in the facility. Since the opening of the Turner Arena in 1991, the facility has been used almost exclusively by the volleyball team. Beginning in 2004, the facility has undergone extensive renovations including a new scoreboard, technology upgrades at the scorers table/ press row, repairs to the locker rooms, new windows and new glass-door entrances. The Annan Natatorium, built in the early 1950s, is connected to the Mars Gymnasium and has recently completed renovations as well. The facility seats 1,500 spectators for athletic events, and houses offices and classrooms. Coach Mike Smith’s office was moved here in 2004 and is located next to the West entrance. The Mars Gymnasium also has a state-of-the-art weight room used by the LMU students, faculty and staff. Several classes are taught in the facility using both the court and a classroom located in the front of the building. The J. Frank White Academy also uses the facility as their home basketball court. The building now known as Mars Gymnasium was originally a sports arena at Camp Forrest, an Army post and prisoner-of-war camp in Tullahoma, Tennessee, (now a part of Arnold Air Force Base known as the Arnold Engineering Development Center) from 1941-1946. One of the more famous people using the future Mars Gymnasium during this period was General George S. Patton, who used the facility in 1941- 42 to help train the 2nd Armored Division. Later in the war, Camp Forest was also used as a POW camp. After the war, Camp Forrest was closed and the building was no longer in use. In 1946, LMU began a $75,000 campaign for a new athletics facility and it was suggested that the Camp Forrest building be bought and moved to the campus. The building was renamed Mary E. Mars Gymnasium after the mother of a former member of the Board of Trustees, Sam Mars Sr., and dedicated to all mothers everywhere. Mars Gymnasium was officially opened on November 29, 1948, in a basketball game which saw the Railsplitters fall 58-43 to the Tennessee Volunteers. In the1950s the Mary S. Annan Natatorium was added to the building. Mars Gymnasium served as the home of the men’s and women’s basketball teams from 1948-1991.

the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University joined the league, followed by Brevard College in 2007. Anderson University became the league’s tenth member in 2010. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal & civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, N.C. became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, LenoirRhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, allsports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of
