2011-12 RAILSPLITTER BASKETBALL SEASON OUTLOOK

The Lincoln Memorial University men’s basketball team set numerous school and South Atlantic Conference records during its incredible 2010-11 season. The team broke school and league records for winning percentage with a 27-3 mark (90%). LMU also set school and league records with 22 consecutive wins, 16 conference victories and 14 straight conference wins. The 27 overall wins tied a South Atlantic Conference record, and broke the school’s NCAA mark for wins in a season. The program also achieved its highest national ranking in school history (#5) and became the first team in South Atlantic Conference history to be ranked #1 in men’s basketball in the Southeast Region. With the return of four starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s team, along with an impact recruiting class, anticipation for the 2011-12 season is at an all-time high. The returners are led by reigning South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year Desmond Johnson (Lynch, KY). Johnson, a 6’5” senior, averaged 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 62.6 percent from the field. Johnson enters his senior campaign as a three-year starter, and will be relied upon at both ends of the floor as well as on the backboards. Another returning three-year starter is point guard Brandon Armstrong (Decatur, GA). Armstrong, a 6’2” senior, averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Armstrong was also a prolific outside threat as he hit 54 three point shots during the 2010-11 season.

The third returning starter is 6’2” junior guard Cam Carden (Clearwater, FL). Carden led the SAC in three point percentage as a sophomore, making 74/172 (43.0). Carden also led the Railsplitters in assists with 76 and steals with 46 while averaging 10.3 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. All-SAC freshman selection Vincent Bailey (Jennings, FL) is the 4th returning starter from last years squad. The 6’6” sophomore averaged 5.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. He missed the last month of the season with a broken foot, but has recovered and will be expected to take a major jump in production during his sophomore campaign. Other key returnees include 6’2” junior Wally Jones (Greensboro, NC) who averaged 3.4 points and made 15 three point field goals, 6’2” sophomore Chance Jones (Knoxville, TN) who also averaged 3.4 points and 6’5” senior Tony Martin, (Cincinnati, OH) who averaged 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 points per game. Other returning letterwinners are Justin Allen (Lithonia, GA), a 6’3” senior who averaged 1.2 points per game, and 6’6” junior Dustin Craig (Knoxville, TN), who averaged 1.9 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest. The 2011 recruiting class for LMU basketball has generated some buzz and includes players hoping to make an immediate impact. Jake Troyli (St. Petersburg, FL) is a 6’10” forward who transfers in as a junior after two very productive seasons at Division I Presbyterian College. In those two seasons, Troyli scored 707 points, grabbed 285 rebounds and blocked 53 shots. Big man Jairocey Simpson (Detroit, MI), 6’9” and 290 lbs., joins the program after a terrific junior college career. Simpson was ranked among the top 100 players in the nation coming out of junior college and was a first team All-Region selection at Pratt CC averaging 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Lorenza Ross (Savannah, GA) is a 6’2” point guard who was named Region 3AAA Player of the Year and a First Team AAA All-State selection averaging 12.8 points, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals per game, leading his Richmond Hills High School team to a region championship. CJ Wakeley (Alachua, FL), a 5’11” point guard, averaged 29 points, 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Wakeley was named First Team All-State in Florida at the 3A level and was named the Florida Athletic Coaches Association 3A North Central Player of the Year after his junior and senior seasons. Also joining the team after redshirting in 2010-11 are freshman forwards Keenan Peterson, 6’10” (College Park, GA) and Chase Jones, 6’5” (Knoxville, TN).

RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF

JOSH SCHERTZ HEAD COACH

4th Season

Since arriving on the Lincoln Memorial University campus as the 17th head coach of the Railsplitter program, Josh Schertz has engineered one of the more remarkable turnarounds in all of college basketball. Schertz, who was named LMU’s head coach on March 22, 2008, inherited a team that had won only one conference game and had posted just seven winning seasons at the NCAA level. In just three seasons he has re-written both the Lincoln Memorial University and South Atlantic Conference record books. Among the school and league records broken during the 2010-11 season are overall wins (27), winning percentage (90%), consecutive wins (22) and conference wins (16). He currently ranks first all-time in South Atlantic Conference history in winning percentage. He also guided LMU to its first-ever NCAA Tournament as well as their first ever South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament championships. During the last two seasons his teams have posted a 48-12 record and were ranked in every Southeast Region poll in that period. The Railsplitters also spent 13 consecutive weeks in the national poll in 2010-11, reaching a school record #5 national ranking in February 2011 before finishing with a #10 ranking in the final poll. His teams on-court success has led to numerous honors as Schertz was chosen the 2011 South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year, selected as a finalist for the 2011 National Division II Coach of the Year and was honored as the 2011 NABC National Coach of the Month for January 2011. Small College Hoops named him the Top Non Division I Head Coach under 40 years of age, and Collegeinsider.com voted him one of the Top 25 Non Division I head coaches in the nation. Schertz’s teams exciting style of play and his commitment to community involvement has led to better than 150% increase in attendance, making Tex Turner Arena into one of the best home court atmospheres in Division II basketball. In keeping with his players-first philosophy, he has helped champion both summer school and a fifth year program for all studentathletes at LMU which will dramatically improve graduation rates for all sports. His commitment to academic integrity is shown by a better than 90% graduation rate over the course of his coaching career. His success on the recruiting trail over the last 12 years has led to unparalleled success for every program he has been involved with. Lincoln Memorial (27) High Point University (22) Queens University (29) and Lynn University (29) all set current record win totals during his tenure. Schertz came to Lincoln Memorial University after serving as the associate head coach at High Point University for five seasons. During this time, High Point posted its five best seasons at the Division I level consecutively, highlighted by the 2006-07 season in which High Point posted a 22-10 record despite having only one senior. He helped the Panthers establish school records for wins in a season, conference wins, road wins and highest RPI ranking. High Point won 87 games in the five years Schertz was on staff (they won a total of 47 games in the five seasons before his arrival). HPU players also thrived in the classroom as 16 out of the 17 players who finished their eligibility graduated during the last five years. While at High Point, Schertz signed three top ranked recruiting classes in the Big South, and his 2005 recruiting class ranked in the top 35 nationally according to Hoopscoop. During Schertz’s tenure as recruiting coordinator two players, Danny Gathings in 2004, and AZ Reid in 2007 and 2008, earned Big South Conference Player of the Year honors a total of three times and were both named Division I All-Americans. He also signed three players, Reid 2005, Justin Dunn 2006 and Eugene Harris 2007, who went on to earn all freshman team honors at HPU. Prior to his tenure at High Point, Schertz served as the associate head coach at Queens University of Charlotte, North 2011-12 LMU Railsplitter Basketball

Carolina, helping lead the Royals to a two-year mark of 49-14 including a school record 29-4 mark in 2003. That 2003 season culminated in the school’s first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four. As the program’s recruiting coordinator, Schertz made a huge impact signing 2004 National Division II Player of the Year Spencer Ross along with two-time national shot block leader Moustapha Diouf and 2003 CVAC Freshman of the Year Kendrick Harris. Schertz also served as a professor in the Queens’ physical education department and was the head coach of Queens’ junior varsity program. Before joining Queens, Schertz spent two years at Lynn University (FL) serving as the Fighting Knights recruiting coordinator. He helped guide Lynn to a 37-18 mark as well as a top-five national ranking. While at Lynn, Schertz signed 2001 National Division II Freshman of the Year Leandro Garcia-Morales. His final signing class before moving to Queens may have been his lasting legacy as the five-man group went on to become the most successful group of players in Lynn history. That group included James Taylor (all-time leading scorer), Justin Wingard (all-time leading rebounder and shot blocker), Austin Faber (all-time leader in assists and steals) and Akil Lewis (all-time leader in made three-pointers), who as seniors formed the nucleus of Lynn’s school record-setting squad that tallied 29 wins and earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Final Four in 2005. While at Lynn, Schertz signed two players named Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, Garcia-Morales (2001) and Taylor (2002), as well as four players who went on to earn all-conference honors. Schertz began his career as an assistant coach at his alma mater Florida Atlantic University where he spent one season working under Kevin Billerman. Schertz also served as an assistant to current Florida Gators associate head coach Larry Shyatt for the 2001 Maccabi Games. Schertz, a 2000 graduate of Florida Atlantic University, also has a master’s degree in education from Lynn University. Coach Schertz has two sons, Jordan (15) and Jaden (9) and is married to the former Natalia Ceballos. They reside in Harrogate, TN.

Josh Schertz talks with the media shortly after his Railsplitters captured the 2010-11 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title in Hickory, North Carolina with a 68-58 win over Wingate University. 2011-12 LMU Railsplitter Basketball

CHRIS COTTRELL Assistant Coach: Entering his fourth season at Lincoln Memorial University, Assistant Coach Chris Cottrell has played an integral role on a coaching staff that has transformed the Railsplitters from a moribund program into a Division II power. This past season, Cottrell worked on a coaching staff that set the school’s record for wins in a season. Their 16-2 record set the South Atlantic Conference record for wins in conference play. Last season the men’s basketball program earned its first NCAA Tournament appearance since joining NCAA Division II, while achieving an NCAA Division II National ranking as high as #5 during the season. LMU was ranked for 13 consecutive weeks and finished the year ranked #10 nationally. In 2009-2010, Cottrell was part of a staff that lead the Lincoln Memorial University’s men’s basketball program to its first ever NCAA Division II 20-win season. Their 20-9 mark set the school record for wins in a season. During the 2009-2010 season, Lincoln Memorial University also achieved its first ever NCAA Division II Southeast Regional ranking. The Railsplitters were ranked in the top eight for seven weeks. During his time on Josh Schertz’s staff, Cottrell has been involved in every aspect of the program’s incredible turnaround. He primarily assists head coach Josh Schertz with player academic development, scouting, guard players’ individual skill development and recruiting. HISTORY

OF THE

SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

LMU not only had a new coach at the start of the 1929 school season, they also had a conference. The Smoky Mountain Athletic Conference (SMAC) was formed in the summer of 1929. The Railsplitters would be in the SMAC until it disbanded in the early 1960’s

With the entry of America into World War II on Dec. 8, 1941, small colleges like LMU lost most of their male students to the services. The SMAC followed suit and halted play until the end of the war. Some schools, like Milligan and CarsonNewman, became Naval training colleges (with classifications like V-5 and V-12). Because of this, most schools put athletics on hold until the end of the war. LMU and a few other schools tried to keep athletics going. One example is Mars Hill, where all but one of the male students on campus were on the basketball team and the coach was a woman. With the end of the war in August, 1945, things slowly began to return to “normal” and schools resumed their athletic programs.

The 1948-49 season had a lot of “firsts.” LMU had a new coach in Dean Bailey, who played against the Railsplitters in football, basketball and baseball while a student at East Tennessee State. They had a new permanent gym in the Mary Mars Gymnasium. They had a new conference with the VSAC adding regular season games (the Volunteer State Athletic Conference had been founded in 1947 and LMU won the first title in the tournament, but the 48-49 season was the first with a full VSAC schedule.) And this season also saw LMU’s first national postseason appearance in the NAIB (which was the basketball portion of the NAIA ) Tournament.

B. Frank “Tex” Turner Arena TThe B. Frank “Tex” Turner arena has been the home of the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters since 1991. Since then, it has become known as one of the top basketball facilities at the Division II level. The 5,000 seat arena opened in 1991 and replaced the Mary E. Mars Gymnasium, which had been the home of LMU basketball since 1948. In the three years under Head Coach Josh Schertz, the Railspitters have amassed a 38-5 home record, and are currently in the midst of an 18 game home winning streak. This past summer, the Men’s Basketball locker-room and players’ lounge underwent a $75,000 renovation, that included brand new wooden lockers, new carpeting, new wooden floors, as well as state of the art technology upgrades. The locker room now features a surround sound stereo system for players’ use and 60inch plasma flat-screen TV for film study. The players’ lounge now boasts an additional 60inch plasma flat screen TV, X-BOX 360, PlayStation 3, leather gaming chairs and a leather couch. Located adjacent to the men’s basketball locker-room are the recently-refurbished weight room and athletic training facilities. The arena also serves as a practice facility for the golf, soccer, baseball and softball teams. The auxiliary gym contains batting cages and there is an indoor practice tee used by the golf teams. The LMU spring and fall commencement services as well as pinning, white coat and other ceremonies are also held there. LMU’s athletic offices are located on the lower level, with the exception of cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s tennis and softball. Also located on the lower level are the LMU Athlete’s Hall-of-Fame, The B. Frank Turner Room and the Athletic Training Department’s offices. The upper level contains a ticket office and other offices as well as the Dean Bailey Trophy Room, which houses trophies and other memorabilia dating back to the 1920’s and is a memorial to former coach Dean Bailey. The upper concourse also is open to the public as a walking track and is extremely popular with the The Railsplitters in the Turner Arena local community. Entrances to the building are located on the north, south and east ends. There are a total of 24 entrance doors to the arena (handicap access is available on both levels). The arena was named after former LMU football standout B. Frank “Tex” Turner, who donated the funds for its construction. Work on the multi-million dollar facility began on May 7, 1988 and on Feb. 2, 1991 the Railsplitters and Lady Railsplitters held their first contests in the facility when they hosted the University of Alabama-Huntsville in a doubleheader. The women won 112-95 and the men lost 85-69.

Strength & Conditioning

Player Development The Schertz Philosophy

“I want to coach high character guys who love to play the game of basketball. Being the best they can be is important to them, and they are willing to do what it takes to reach their potential. I want guys that are responsible, bring positive energy, who work and invest their time to dominate the people they play against. My philosophy on building a championship organization is simple: Teams that win do so because they have good players, but they also win because they recruit high character people who make good decisions on and off the court. It carries over both ways. Our goal at LMU is not to have a “Winning Team” but to build a CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAM!”

Academic Development

The mission of the Lincoln Memorial University Men’s Basketball Academic Development has been to ensure that players prepare and develop a career off of the basketball court. In the last three seasons, the men’s basketball program has graduated every student athlete who has exhausted their eligibility at LMU. Coach Schertz and the academic administration at Lincoln Memorial University have developed both summer school and a fifth year program for all student athletes at LMU. Study halls, tutoring sessions and library learning programs held by the men’s basketball staff are required for all men’s basketball student-athletes. The men’s basketball staff adheres to the class check policy of “every player, every class, everyday” in their daily pursuit of developing champions on and off the court.

Each fall the men’s basketball team volunteers with the Relay for Life Walk to Fight Cancer held at Harrogate City Park. The past three years on Thanksgiving Day, the Railsplitters have teamed with Pump Springs Baptist Church to hand deliver Thanksgiving dinners to families in the tristate aea. During Christmas, the team can be found helping at the ROHO Christmas Shopping Spree for underprivileged children. The Railsplitters are also involved in area elementary and middle schools, participating in the “Reading For Success” program each spring.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,550 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
