LADY RAILSPLITTER COACHING STAFF

HEAD COACH Dan Burns

A native of Kettering, Ohio, Burns began his career at Lincoln Memorial University in the fall of 1970 where he was a dual-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball. While playing for the legendary Dean Bailey, Burns was a standout in both sports and was inducted into the Lincoln Memorial University Athletes Hall of Fame in 2003 for his collegiate contributions. In 1976, he accepted the position of assistant baseball coach and four years later became head coach when Bailey made the decision to retire after 31 years at the helm of the Railsplitter baseball program. From 1981 to 1987, Burns served as the skipper of the Lincoln Memorial University baseball program, served as athletics director from 1987 to 1988 and as director of campus and community recreation from 1989 to 1995. In 1995, Burns again returned to the diamond, this time as head coach of the Lady Railsplitter softball program. Although this was his first experience coaching women’s collegiate softball, his knowledge of the game shined on the field and his teams soon made their presence known thoughout the Gulf South Conference. In only his second season with the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters reached the 1996 GSC Tournament Championship losing to eventual champion Alabama-Huntsville. During Burns’ 16 years as head coach of the LMU softball program, the Lady Railsplitters have made eight trips to the conference tournament and produced 25 all-conference players, one Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American and two Daktronics All-Americans. In addition, Burns ranks as one of the nation’s winningest active coaches with a career record of 486 wins, 362 losses and one tie going into the 2011 season. Burns is a 1974 graduate of Lincoln Memorial University and also serves as the director of the LMU City Park. He currently resides in Harrogate with his wife, Regina and their three children - Josh, Victoria and Gavin.

ASSISTANT COACH Tiffany Edgar

Edgar enters her fourth season as the assistant coach for the LMU softball program. Tiffany came to LMU from East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, North Carolina, where she was head coach for three years. Before taking over the helm of the Cavalier program, Edgar played for the University of Toledo and was an NFCA Scholar Athlete, receiving the MAC Presidential Award. During her last year with the Rockets, Edgar received the honor of having an award named after her. The Edgar Excellence Award is given to a senior at the end of each season who exemplifies good citizenship, solid academics and excels athletically. Edgar is a native of Tecumseh, Michigan. She is married to LMU Director of Student Life Brian DeJonghe.

JACKIE ADAMS

Height: 5’2” B/T: L/R Class: Senior Position: Outfield Hometown: Columbus, OH High School: St. Frances DeSales High School

#3

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Jackie is one of only two seniors on this year’s squad. It is important that she exert that leadership early for the team to be successful. Jackie’s speed is her greatest asset both at the plate and at her spot in centerfield, and she has a great chance of being named to the All-Conference team.”

CHELLEY CHRISTIAN

Height: 5’5” B/T: R/R Class: Junior Position: Outfield Hometown: Kingsport, Tennessee High School: Dobyns-Bennett High School

#4

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Chelley loves the game, has a lot of speed and will compete for an outfield position. She primarily bats from the left side, allowing her to utilize her quickness and put pressure on the defense.”

SARA WALZ

Height: 5’3” B/T: R/R Class: Sophomore Position: Pitcher Hometown: Innisfail, Alberta College: Red Deer College

THE 2011 LADY RAILSPLITTERS

BRIDGET EICHER

Height: 5’5” B/T: R/R Class: Junior Position: Third Base Hometown: Hicksville, Ohio High School: Fairview High School

#10

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Third base is Bridget’s spot to lose. She is a solid defender and doesn’t allow many balls to go by her. She, along with Jackie, brings a lot of leadership to our team. She also has a great opportunity to be AllConference.”

CIERRA MUDD

Height: 5’6” B/T: R/R Class: Sophomore Position: Picher / First Base Hometown: Washburn, Tennessee High School: Washburn High School

#12

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Cierra has matured a lot since last year and will be relied on to pitch a lot of games this year. She loves the game and continues to work hard on improving. I expect Cierra to add numbers in the win column for this team.”

BRIANNA MULKEY

Height: 5’6” B/T: L/R Class: Freshman Position: Outfielder Hometown: Kettering, Ohio High School: Fairmont High School

#17

COACH’S COMMENTS

“Brianna Mulkey might be the fastest player I’ve had the privilege to coach, and we’ve had some fast players come through this program. If she can get on first, she’s probably going to score. She’s worked hard on laying down the bunt as well as hitting the ball to the outfield, so look for Brianna to be a threat to every team’s defense.” 2011 LMU Softball

2011 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK THE 2007 LADY RAILSPLITTERS The 2011 season should be an interesting one for the Lady Railsplitters. While eleven players return from last year’s team that advanced as far as the South Atlantic Conference tournament quarterfinals, some key players in that run are gone. In all, LMU returns 64 percent of its run production, 62 percent of the hits, 63 percent of the doubles, 93 percent of the triples, 35 percent of the HR’s, 48 percent of the RBIs, 73 percent of the stolen bases and 93 percent of the pitching victories from last season. Seven players who started 30 or more games last season return, led by sophomore All-SAC Second Team utility player Meghan LaFevor (.345 avg., 14 doubles, 5 triples, 17 RBIs, 23 steals, 18-13 record, 1.19 ERA, 125 Ks in 132 innings), who has also been named to the pre-season All-SAC squad. Joining her on the pre-season team is senior Jackie Adams (.331 avg., 5 doubles, 5 triples, 15 RBIs, 18 steals), who is an anchor in the outfield. Junior Brittany Stuive (.308 avg., 7 doubles) returns at first base while fellow junior Bridget Eicher (.287 avg., 8 doubles, 3 HRs) returns at third. Senior Ashley Knight (.274 avg., 4 doubles, 10 steals) will see time mainly at left field. Meg Ryan (.200 avg. 5 RBIs) will see time at both shortstop and catcher during her junior season. Junior Chelley Christian (.200 avg., 3 doubles) will come in to pinch-run in addition to seeing time in the outfield. Cierra Mudd (3 HRs, 8-9 record, 52 Ks in 99.2 innings) will be a key cog in the pitching rotation. Meagan Effler will step into the starting catcher slot after backing up Devin Sponseller for two seasons. Sophomore Sarah Walz will take over at second base this season. A talented crop of newcomers will add to the mix. Brianna Mulkey will anchor the right field and could possibly be the fastest softball player in LMU history. Katie-Jo Gentry will see a lot of time in the pitching circle. Taylor McGinnis will see time at first base and as the designated player. Also seeing time in the infield will be Kristi Franz, Danae Reed and Pebbles King. Krisha Mahan, and Brittani Bezanson will see time in the outfield. Coach Dan Burns returns for his 17th season needing only 14 wins to reach 500 for his softball coaching career. A newly renovated Dorothy Neely Field complex will host 28 games this season, including long-time rivals Union, Cumberlands, King and Virginia Intermont in addition to SAC foes Lenoir-Rhyne, Wingate, Brevard, Mars Hill and SAC newcomer Anderson. Appearances in the Mid-South Classic and Columbus State Tournament will also help prepare the team for the grueling SAC schedule. The pieces are in place for a run at a SAC championship and the program’s first NCAA tournament bid. All that is needed now are time, experience and a little bit of luck.

DOROTHY NEELY FIELD The Dorothy Neely field has been the home of the Lady Railsplitters since the 1990 season. The field complex seats approximately 350 people in bleacher seats, sideline benches and open areas for lawn chairs. The dimensions are 200 feet down the lines and 215 to center field. The playing surface is Bermuda grass. Batting cages and a bullpen are adjacent to the field, and teams can also use the baseball field cages and bullpen if needed. Recent renovations include a new press box / storage facility behind home plate which includes space for scoreboard and statistical operations as well as equipment storage and changing rooms for players and umpires. A new scoreboard will be installed in February. The dugouts are enclosed, and there are safety fences in the front to help protect players, coaches and staff from stray balls. Lights were installed in 2003, and several night games are scheduled each year. The Lady Railsplitters first played on the field on March 28, 1990, when they hosted former TVAC foe Milligan College. LMU won both games by scores of 4-3 and 8-5. Prior to that, home games were played on a part of the old LMU farm (the playing site is now included in the Harrogate City Park.) The field was officially dedicated on May 12, 1990.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. Enrollment is 4,445 students at the main campus in Harrogate and 11 extended-campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

ISTORY OFCONFERENCE THE OUTH THE SOUTH ATLANTIC The South Atlantic Conference is in its 35th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.
