HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna, or Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his ninth season as head men’s and women’s soccer coach. Under his leadership, the men have accumulated four conference titles and two trips to the NCAA national tournament. The women have also won four conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA national tournament. In 2007, the LMU men’s soccer program won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles, and won its second consecutive Appalachian Region title, on the way to back-toback appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. The run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 with less than two minutes on the clock. The Railsplitters have clinched conference titles in 2004 and 2005. The LMU women’s soccer team won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2007 and advanced to the quarterfinal round match of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. They also won conference titles and advanced to nationals in 2004 and 2005, including a deep trip to quarter finals of the national tournament. D’Anna was named the 2004 NCAA South Region Coach of the Year with the women and the 2007 Appalachian Region Coach of the Year with the men. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to Lincoln Memorial University. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and has a master’s degree in physical education from Union College, Ky. He coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His overall winning record is 285-151-30 (198-100-21 with the men and 87-519 with the women). In percentage of wins, D’Anna is the 22nd winningest active coach in the NCAA II with the men and 31st with the women. He also ranks 26th in the nation in number of victories with the men. He and his wife Debbie reside in Barbourville, Ky. 4
ASSISTANT COACHES/TEAM PHYSICIAN Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions as a player and as a coach were evident in LMU’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins, a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four and their 2007 national championship appearance. As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes brought to the table a great deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that was second to none. Now entering his second year as the LMU soccer program’s full-time assistant coach, de Moraes is involved in all phases of the program. Adriano was a former player with several clubs in Brazil, including Sao Jose FC and Internacional de Limeira. He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from University of Vale do Paraiba (Brazil) and a Master of Education in counseling from LMU.
Graduate Assistant Coach Paul Keeling Paul Keeling hails from Retford, England, and has a wealth of experience as a player and young coach. He played at The University of Lincoln in England where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in media production. The goalkeeper was a team captain, and was chosen as the University Footballer of the Year and University Athlete of the Year in 2006. He also helped his team win two divisional titles in 2006 and 2007. Keeling was a student coach at LMU in 2010 and will start as a graduate assistant coach in 2011. He will work with the goalkeepers and will be involved with on-the-field training, weight room duties, equipment and game-day duties. Coach Keeling is pursuing a master’s degree in business.
Team Physician Dr. Howard Teitelbaum Dr. Howard Teitelbaum enters his fifth season as the team physician for the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer program. Dr. Teitelbaum is professor of medicine at the LMU-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Before coming to LMU, Teitelbaum coached soccer at the high school level in the State of California and was also a soccer referee and officiated at the college and professional level. Teitelbaum served as the state director of referee instruction for the State of Michigan for the United States Soccer Federation and is still a standing member of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association. 5
2011 SEASON OUTLOOK The upcoming season will be a combination of excitement for the unknown and confidence in previous successes.
and always with a chance to qualify to nationals.
The LMU men’s soccer team seems to always be in contention to win titles. Ever since 2003, when the Railsplitters reached the conference semifinals after a long absence from being in the top four, the men have been hungry to dominate. In 2004 and 2005, they won conference titles. In 2006, they won the regional title and made it to the final four. In 2007, they won both the conference regular season and tournament title and made all the way to the national championship. Between 2008 and 2010 they finished fourth, second and third respectively in the conference, always raked in the region
But the reality is that the time is right to finish first again and all signs point in that direction. The return of Adriano de Moraes and the addition of Paul Keeling gives all the players assurance of the highest quality of coaching. Their knowledge of the game and past experience as players is invaluable to both returners and newcomers. A lot of work has been done on the facilities during the summer, making them among the best in the conference and region. The game field reached a point of maturation, and the surface looks the best it has looked since the construction of the field in 2009. Artificial turf added in front of the dugouts, the addition of stands to the stadium and the hanging of the championship banners add a very classy touch. Our new practice facilities are also top notch and afford us all we need to prepare for the tough schedule that we play. Speaking of the schedule, LMU is not dodging anyone. The team will play a tough schedule that will give them a chance to qualify at large to nationals. Aside from the usual gruesome SAC schedule (with Carson Newman, Wingate, Mars Hill and Anderson being showcase matches), they will play extremely tough regional games (Alabama Huntsville, Belmont Abbey, Georgia Southwestern and North Georgia are all contenders to the national tournament). By tournament time, the team will be no doubt flying high. All of the above serves just as a side bar to the most important factor into the upcoming season: the players. We worked extremely hard to not only bring quality players in, but to instill the mentality of hard work and championship attitude with the returners. With high expectations for all the players, a few key individuals stand out. A load of talent returns, including all-conference and all-region Michael Watkins, and starters Fabio Costa, Nick Muth, Chris Nash, Callum Home and Macca Wilde. Players who were occasional starters include Tom Clark, Robbie Curtis, Erik Biddinger, Calum Calder and Jose Moreno. Hungry to contend are Andrew Bayerl, Alex Monk and Peter Fraser (all coming back from redshirting last year); Chris Ruiz and Arthur da Silva (both very talented and capable to start), as well as Ryan Beckner. Adding to this collection of returners is an incoming class that is just as impressive. Mario de Oliveira, Yuri Passos and Leonardo Germiniani can easily become allconference and more this year. Dylan Burnett and Brady Seehorn are capable to contend for a starting spot. Gus Rivera and Phil Roulier will be seasoned freshmen having had a chance to join the roster last spring. This will be a mature and balanced roster led by not only seniors (Watkins, Costa, Bayerl, Curtis and Fraser) but also by a number of juniors and seasoned returners. Based on the past seven years, the Railsplitter fans can be certain that these players will do what they always do: contend to win titles. 6

HEIGHT: 5’10” POSITION: Midfielder/Defender CLASS: Senior HOMETOWN: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada MAJOR: Physical Education & Kinesiology PARENTS: Peter & Heather Fraser
COACH’S COMMENTS: “Peter has dealt with a large share of injuries over the years. Nevertheless, his attitude has never waived and that should pay dividends this year. As a defender, he has good read of the game and good positioning.” LMU CAREER STATISTICS 2008 2009 TOTAL

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE Key Dates in SAC History
The South Atlantic Conference is in its 36th yeas of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, N.C. became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC8, Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was
1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed when six schools broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 1961 – Newberry joins league. Conference changes name to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) 1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed as football league with eight schools, called the SAC-8. 1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry 1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference 1996 – Newberry rejoins conference 1998 – Tusculum joins conference 2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference 2007 – Brevard joins conference 2010 – Anderson joins conference composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University joined the league, followed by Brevard College in 2007. Anderson University became the league’s tenth member in 2010. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal & civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,445 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and extended-learning sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
