HEAD COACH HELIO D’ANNA Coach Helio D’Anna, or Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his ninth season as head men’s and women’s soccer coach. Under his leadership, the men have accumulated four conference titles and two trips to the NCAA national tournament. The women have also won four conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA national tournament. In 2007, the LMU men’s soccer program won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles, and won its second consecutive Appalachian Region title, on the way to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Final Four. The run at the national title ended in the championship match where LMU lost 1-0 with less than two minutes on the clock. The Railsplitters have clinched conference titles in 2004 and 2005. The LMU women’s soccer team won the South Atlantic Conference regular season and tournament titles in 2007 and advanced to the quarterfinal round match of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament. They also won conference titles and advanced to nationals in 2004 and 2005, including a deep trip to quarter finals of the national tournament. D’Anna was named the 2004 NCAA South Region Coach of the Year with the women and the 2007 Appalachian Region Coach of the Year with the men. A product of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College before coming to Lincoln Memorial University. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and has a master’s degree in physical education from Union College, Ky. He coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas. His overall winning record is 285-151-30. In percentage of wins, D’Anna is the 22nd winningest active coach in the NCAA II with the men and 31st with the women. He also ranks 26th in the nation in number of victories with the men. He and his wife Debbie reside in Barbourville, Ky.

ASSISTANT COACHES/TEAM PHYSICIAN Assistant Coach Adriano de Moraes
Although Adriano only played one season with the Railsplitters, his contributions as a player and as a coach were evident in LMU’s two Appalachian Region titles, their two Elite-8 wins, a SAC Tournament title, two trips to the final four and their 2007 national championship appearance. As a graduate assistant coach, de Moraes brought to the table a great second to none.
deal of soccer knowledge, quality leadership and a work ethic that was
Now entering his second year as the LMU soccer program’s full-time assistant coach, de Moraes is involved in all phases of the program. Adriano was a former player with several clubs in Brazil, including Sao Jose FC and Internacional de Limeira. He has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from University of Vale do Paraiba (Brazil) and a Master of Education in counseling from LMU.
Graduate Assistant Coach Courtney Hollis

Now in her second year, she works with the goalkeepers and is involved with on-the-field training, weight room duties, equipment and game-day duties. Coach Hollis is pursuing a master’s degree in English at LMU.

2011 LADY RAILSPLITTER SEASON OUTLOOK In the life of a program, it is normal for one to see cycles of performance. Years of championship caliber are sometimes followed by rebuilding years. Rebuilding years follow a crescent to be primed for championships again. The LMU Lady Railsplitters soccer team is ready to contend to titles again. After 2007 when they won the SAC regular season and tournament titles and advanced to nationals for the third time in school history, the LMU women’s soccer team began to rebuild the roster. In 2008 they finished 11-6-1 and 4-4 in the SAC, and in 2009 they mustered a 7-8-3 (3-5 in the conference) with a very young team. Last year the lady Railsplitters showed signs of maturation. They finished 10-7-0 overall and 3-6 in the SAC. Of the seven losses, five were by one goal (one being in overtime) with the ladies fighting till the last second. TThe return of Adriano de Moraes and the addition
of Paul Keeling gives all the players assurance of the highest quality of coaching. Their knowledge of the game and past experience as players is invaluable to both returners and newcomers. A lot of work has been done on the facilities during the summer, making them among the best in the conference and region. The game field reached a point of maturation, and the surface looks the best it has looked since the construction of the field in 2009. Artificial turf added in front of the dugouts, the addition of stands to the stadium and the hanging of the championship banners add a very classy touch. Our new practice facilities are also top notch and afford us all we need to prepare for the tough schedule that we play. Speaking of our schedule, LMU is not dodging anyone. We will play a tough schedule that will give us a chance to qualify at large to nationals. Aside from our usual gruesome SAC schedule (with Lenoir Rhyne, Tusculum, Wingate, Catawba, Carson Newman being showcase matches), we will play extremely tough regional games (Alabama Huntsville, Mount Olive, Columbus State, Lees McRae and the University of Tampa are all contenders to the national tournament). By tournament time, this team will be flying high. All of the above serves just as side bar to the most important factor into the upcoming season: the players. We worked extremely hard to not only bring quality players in, but to prepare the returning ones to do what LMU expects from the program: win championships. We have a lot of talent coming back and players that are hungry to perform. They have had a couple of frustrating seasons and want to experience success. Most of our signees are freshmen and bring depth and skill everywhere on the field. We add size and strength (Savannah Pitt, Lindsey Anderson, Samantha Sturgeon); quickness (Rachael Vienneau, Alexa Samry and Courtney Samry); speed (Nicole McKinney and Samantha Hilliard); playmaking traits (Mariana de Luca, Brittany Jenkins, Carly Cepelak); and maturity/championship experience (Michelle Allen). Among top returnees are sophomores Kristen Cook and Teresa Doyle (starters as freshmen), as well as Caitlin Templeton, Abby Yother and Emma Miller (a lot of potential and talent). The juniors are also very talented and will be led by Sarah Thompson (a starter the past two years), and Kayla Hanson (returning from a redshirt year). But the focus will be on a very seasoned senior class ready to finish their career on the highest note. All-conference and all-region players Sarah Thompson and Leanne Reid return along with strong leaders Jessica Meyer, Sam Meek and Sydni Bailey. They have high expectations for themselves and from all the other players. It’s time to prove that although cycles may exist and the lessons learned from the past three years will be important, dynasties can be forged by hard work, mental toughness, faith and team unity. And
these ladies have it all.

LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY
Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,445 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and extended-learning sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

Construction on the new LMU Soccer stadium began in 2007. The field is adjacent to the site of Gibbs Field, the home of the LMU soccer teams from 1990-2007.
The setting include a 120x80 yard Bermuda grass field, European-style goals and brand new score board. The large dugouts also feature storage areas and two bathrooms in addition to covered benches. When completed, the stadium will include concrete stands to sit 200 people and a two-story press box with a concession stand and bathrooms. The LMU soccer locker rooms are located in the Tex Turner Arena, but a proposed fieldhouse will contain locker rooms at the stadium site.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE
Key Dates in SAC History
The South Atlantic Conference is in its 36th yeas of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, N.C. became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, all-sports conference. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry
1930 -– North State Atlantic Conference formed when six schools broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 1961 – Newberry joins league. Conference changes name to Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) 1975 – South Atlantic Conference formed as football league with eight schools, called the SAC-8. 1988 – Wingate replaces Newberry 1989 – SAC became an all-sports conference 1996 – Newberry rejoins conference 1998 – Tusculum joins conference 2006 – Lincoln Memorial joins conference 2007 – Brevard joins conference 2010 – Anderson joins conference later rejoined the conference in 1996. Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league in 1998. In 2006, Lincoln Memorial University joined the league, followed by Brevard College in 2007. Anderson University became the league’s tenth member in 2010. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal & civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.
