LMU SOCCER COMPLEX

LMU SOCCER COMPLEX Home of the Railsplitters

The LMU Soccer Field/Complex has been the home of the Railsplitters since the 2008 season. Construction on the new LMU soccer complex began in 2007. The complex is adjacent to the site of Gibbs Field, the home of the LMU soccer teams from 1990-2007. The settings include a 120x80 yard bermuda grass field, european style goals, and brand new score board. The large dugouts also feature storage areas and two bathrooms in addition to covered benches. In 2010, concrete stands were added that seat approximately 250 people and a two story press box with a concession stand is planned for the future. The hillside opposite the dugouts has proven to be popular place for fans to watch the matches as well.

2012 LMU Men’s Soccer

At this point the LMU soccer locker rooms are located in the Tex Turner Arena but are planned to be moved to a fieldhouse adjacent to the stadium site sometime in the future.

BRAZIL TRIP 2012 Coach Helio D’Anna uses the Brazil trip as pre-season for his teams (once every four years as allowed by the NCAA). During the trip, the LMU soccer teams have the opportunity to train at various sites with various clubs. They also have opportunities to observe professional practices and to interact with professional players and coaches. One of the highlights of these trips is the opportunity to scrimmage various youth amateur teams affiliated with the academy sustems of the professional clubs in Brazil. Without a doubt, these are extremely challenging matches that prepare the LMU teams for the tough season ahead.

2012 LMU Men’s Soccer

Of course during the trip the players have also opportunities to do sightseeing, shopping, and activities to experience the local culture (including the world famous Brazilian cuisine). As importantly, the trip provides a great team bounding opportunity creating the right team chemistry that is so important in athletics.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW Over the past 4 years the Lincoln Memorial University men’s soccer team has come very close to winning the SAC, almost always being withing striking range up to the last game of the season. However, winning the title has proven to be a hard thing to accomplish as they came up short time and time again. However, the 2012 squad has all the ingredients to put the Railsplitters over the hump. Talent, technique, scoring power, and athleticism are stand out traits of this year’s roster. The 2012 squad will be filled with seniors who are eager to add to the rich legacy of the program. Led by seven returning starters, this year’s team has a lot of depth in all areas of the field. Many of the incoming players will also be contending for a starting position due to a number of them being seasoned transfers who should require little time to adjust to the college level. Depth will be the name of the game this season as all positions on the field are at least two-deep, with several being threedeep. And given the versatility of the players, the Railsplitters should be able to showcase a number of formations and systems of play. The offense will have four to five players who will constantly be scoring threats. Due to this, the team will have different looks that they will be able to throw at the opposition, including three forwards at times. The roster also boasts a few target forwards, a position that has been successful at LMU in the past . The midfield will showcase the usual display of technique but also an incredible work ethic. They will be pressuring the ball at all times and should be able to control the ball quite well in possession. The middle of the field should also provide quite a bit of scoring power. Defensively, the Railsplitters will be the deepest they have been in recent years, having both size and strength as well as scoring capabilities from the back. In goal the depth will be very evident with plenty of options.

More than ever, the players will have to report in shape for pre-season as the team takes their quadriennial trip to Brazil. The Brazil trip will add a lot to the team’s preparation as will the 10 days that follow it leading to the first game of the season. www.Railsplitters.com

2012 LMU Men’s Soccer

As always, the team will have one of the stonger strength of schedules in the conference. Regional foes such as Alabama-Huntsville, Montevallo, King, Union University, Queens and Trevecca will add to the already-tough competition found in the South Atlantic Conference. The SAC seems even stronger this year with Anderson, Tusculum and Mars Hill being the favorites, closely followed by Carson Newman, Catawba, and Lenoir Rhyne.

COACHING STAFF

Helio D’Anna HEAD COACH, TENTH SEASON

Coach Helio D’Anna, or Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his tenth season as head men’s and women’s soccer coach. Under his leadership, the men have accumulated four conference titles and two trips to the NCAA national tournament while the women have won four conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA national tournament. D’Anna came to LMU in the summer of 2003 and immediately re-invigorated the LMU soccer program, bringing with him a style of play and work ethic that returned both teams to the top of the conference standings. In 2004, the women’s team not only won five more matches than the previous season but also earned the program’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they reached the Elite Eight. The next season they followed that success with the program’s second Gulf South Conference title and another trip to nationals. After moving to the South Atlantic Conference in 2006 and being ineligible for conference play that season, they roared back in 2007 with a SAC title and reached the NCAA Southeast Region semifinals. The men’s teams have also enjoyed tremendous success under D’Anna’s tutelage. The won the GSC title in their final season in that conference in 2006. Despite being ineligible for conference play due to the move to the SAC, they earned the program’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, advancing to the national semifinals. 2007 was a dream season for the Railsplitters as they not only captured the SAC regular-season and tournament titles, but they also advanced to the NCAA Championship match, where they fell in the final seconds to Franklin Pierce. D’Anna was named the 2004 NCAA South Region Coach of the Year with the women and the 2007 Appalachian Region Coach of the Year with the men. Prior to LMU, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College where he compiled a 99-60-9 record. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the HELIO D’ANNA 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. LMU YEAR BY YEAR RESULTS A native of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and has a master’s degree in physical education from Union College, Ky. He coached and played at different soccer clubs in Brazil as well as the American High School of Campinas.

2012 LMU Men’s Soccer

His overall combined winning record (including his time at Union) is 301166-35. In the NCAA rankings, D’Anna ranks 41st in percentage and 55th in total victories amongst active coaches with the women. On the men’s side he ranks 24th in percentage (first amongst SAC coaches) and 21st in total victories.

8

His wife Debbie is a former women’s basketball coach at Union and currently is Dean of Students at Brevard College. The couple splits time between Brevard, N.C. and Morristown, Tenn.

Coach D’Anna earned his 300th victory as a head coach on Oct. 27, 2011 when the LMU women won 2-1 at Mars Hill.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

24

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 37th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew

to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007 and a full member in 2008. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University became the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in

Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

2012 LMU Men’s Soccer

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 115th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2011 enrollment was 4,550 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
