MEET THE COACHES HEAD COACH BENNY COLLINS

A native of nearby Middlesboro, Kentucky, Collins took over as head coach of the LMU tennis programs in 2008. He took over programs that had been in a decline after being conference and national contenders in the 1990s and early 2000s and not only rebuilt them but took them to a whole new level. To date he has a 58-24 record with the men and a 52-28 record with the women and both teams are perenially amongst the top three in the South Atlantic Conference standings. His first season in 2008-09 was a rebuilding year for both teams as they both finished with identical 2-6 SAC records. The men were 8-12 overall while the women were 7-13. The 2009-10 season saw one of the biggest turnarounds in the country as both teams captured the SAC regular season and tournament crowns. The men were 19-2, 8-0 in the SAC while the women were 18-4, 7-1 in the SAC. Collins was named SAC Coach of the Year in both sports and is only the second coach in SAC history to do so in both sports in the same season. The 2010-11 season saw the teams have solid seasons despite injuries, with the women going 13-5 (6-3 SAC) and finishing in the Food Lion SAC Tournament quarterfinals and the men going 13-6 (7-2 SAC) and making it to the semifinals of the Food Lion SAC Tournament. The 2011-12 season saw the teams undergo many line-up shifts early-on due to injuries, but once everyone became healthy both teams made their presence felt in the SAC. The women went 14-6 (5-4 SAC) before falling the in the tournament quarterfinals while the men went 18-4 (7-2) before falling to Wingate in the tournament championship match. Collins served as head coach at Middlesboro High School from the Spring 2000 until the end of Spring 2008, tallying an overall record of 153-18 with the girls program which includes five regional titles and three regional runners-up honors. With the Yellow Jacket boys program, Collins amassed a record of 109-37 during that period and was regional runner-up with the program two times.

COACH COLLINS ON SMITH "Melanie was one of the first players I signed and has been a key component of the team for the last three seasons. With her class schedule causing some conflicts she will be a back-up this season but what a back-up to have! She has a great attitude and work ethic and she will be sorely missed next year."

HISTORY

34

OF THE

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 36th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The conference has enjoyed tremendous success due to dedicated people building a premier athletic conference throughout its history. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s

Later the conference grew to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions

from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University joined the conference to become the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of 10 private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 114th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2010 enrollment was 4,550 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.

PRESIDENT / A.D. / ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION B. James Dawson, Ed.D. President A native Hoosier, Dawson earned a BA and a MA at the University of Evansville in Evansville, Ind., and began his academic career as an admissions counselor at his alma mater. While still working at the University of Evansville, he received his doctorate in administration of higher education from Indiana University. During his tenure at the University of Evansville, Dawson held a variety of administrative positions culminating with a vice president post. In 1988 he moved on to Fort Hays State University where he served as the vice president for student and institution development. He was responsible for development, alumni relations, public relations and governmental relations at the institution, which is part of the Kansas Regents system. Dawson gained national recognition for his contributions to the field of alcohol and drug abuse prevention. As a member of the Presidents Leadership Group, he joined five other college and university presidents in a concerted effort to involve the leadership of institutions of higher education in the fight against irresponsible and illegal use of drugs and alcohol. He also serves on the national board for BACCHUS and Gamma. The BACCHUS Network is a university and community based network focusing on comprehensive health and safety initiatives. Dawson served as president of Coker College in Hartsville, S.C. from 2002 until July 2009. With Dawson at the helm, Coker College successfully completed a $23 million capital campaign. This fundraising effort enabled the college to make significant investments in the campus community, including the construction of the 40,000-square foot, $6.5 million Charles W. and Joan S. Coker Library-Information Technology Center. Several millions of dollars also went to improving academic programs, residence halls and campus landscaping. Coker College also experienced considerable enrollment growth during Dawson’s presidency. Dawson served his first presidency at Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tenn., where he served from 1995 until 2002.

Roger Vannoy Athletics Director Vannoy is in his fifth season as Lincoln Memorial University’s Athletic Director. During that time, he has guided LMU’s transition from the Gulf South Conference to the South Atlantic Conference. A native of Harrogate, Tennessee, Vannoy graduated from Lincoln Memorial in 1975. He immediately went into coaching the girls’ varsity team at Powell Valley High School, his alma mater. From 1975-82 he compiled a 133-58 record as head coach of the Lady Indians and won several district titles. In 1982, he took over the helm of a LMU women’s basketball program that had compiled a 52-50 record over the past four seasons. By his third season, the team posted their first of seven consecutive 20-win seasons. During his 25 years he would compile a 463-246 record, which ranks him in the top 25 Division II coaches in total victories. Seven of his teams were conference champions and one would boast the highest GPA amongst NCAA women’s basketball teams that season. Twelve of his 25 teams won at least 20 games in a season, and he coached 21 LMU hall of famers, 16 all-conference performers and 5 All-Americans. Vannoy’s retirment from the coaching ranks following the 200607 season aforded him the opportunity to take over as Lincoln Memorial University’s athletics director and to continue to serve his alma mater. Vannoy and his wife Pam reside in Harrogate.

Dawson joined the administration at Lincoln Memorial University in July 2009 and serves as president at the main campus in Harrogate, Tenn. He is a Paul Harris Fellow with Rotary International and completed the CASE institute for Advancement at Dartmouth University. Dawson and his wife, Karen, have two children and three grandchildren.
