MEDIA INFORMATION BILL PORTER Director of Athletic Statistics and Publications / Soccer Contact Bill is in his 12th year in the LMU Athletic Media Relations Department and was named the Director of Athletic Statistics & Publications in January, 2012 when the Sports Information Department was restructured. He handles all the statistics for each sport and oversees publication of media guides, the website, and other related athletic department projects. An almunus of LMU, he has been the team statistician for basketball since 1992 and all sports since 2000. His efforts in compiling the then-nonexistent year-by-year results for many LMU sports as well as other efforts inspired the creation of the LMU R. Martin Peters Young Alumnus Award, of which Porter was the first recipient. Prior to returning to LMU in 2000, he worked at WATE-TV 6 in Knoxville as a production assistant. A native of Knoxville, Porter earned a bachelor’s degree in communication arts with a broadcasting emphasis in 1994.

SCOTT ERLAND Director of Athletic Communications Scott was named the Director of Athletic Communications in January of 2012. Erland was a four-year standout on the LMU baseball team, compiling an 11-3 career record with a 4.45 ERA and 75 strikeouts, primarily as a mid-week pitcher. He also walked on to the basketball team for two seasons where he shot 41.1 percent from three point range and 78.6 from the free throw line and was a key reserve. A native of Pegram, Tennessee, Erland graduated with a degree in English from LMU in 2011

LMU SOCCER COMPLEX

LMU SOCCER COMPLEX Home of the Lady Railsplitters

The LMU Soccer Field/Complex has been the home of the Lady Railsplitters since the 2008 season. Construction on the new LMU soccer complex began in 2007. The complex is adjacent to the site of Gibbs Field, the home of the LMU soccer teams from 1990-2007. The settings include a 120x80 yard bermuda grass field, european style goals, and brand new score board. The large dugouts also feature storage areas and two bathrooms in addition to covered benches. In 2010, concrete stands were added that seat approximately 250 people and a two story press box with a concession stand is planned for the future. The hillside opposite the dugouts has proven to be popular place for fans to watch the matches as well.

2012 LMU Women’s Soccer

At this point the LMU soccer locker rooms are located in the Tex Turner Arena but are planned to be moved to a fieldhouse adjacent to the stadium site sometime in the future.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW The 2012 Lincoln Memorial women’s soccer team is ready to make their mark. Although still the youngest program in the South Atlantic Conference, the team is experienced as they return a number of starters from last year. On top of it, add in one of the deepest and most talented incoming class in recent years. The general characteristics of this year’s squad are athleticism, size, speed and technique. Traits that are almost mandatory if one wants to contend in the SAC. The Lady Railsplitters should be able to match opponents’ traits and systems, yet make it hard for them to do the same. Given the depth of the roster, a number of formations and systems will be used during the season. On offense the women have a lot of “big shots” with players who can finish from 35 yards and out. The aerial game will be strong as well, not only given the size and finishing prowess but also the quality of the services that these players can provide, including having “true-footed” services on either side. Set pieces will also be strong considering the free kicking abilities of several of the players. The midfield will also be strong, a trademark of the LMU soccer program in the Coach D’Anna era. This generation is committed to maintain the possession style that his LMU teams have always had, and also will add an incredible work ethic and the ability to keep pressure on the ball. In fact, this year’s squad should be able to be a true full-field pressure kind of team. Defense is where the Lady Railsplitters will be the deepest. Size, speed and aggressiveness permeate the roster. In net, the keepers are just as proficient and will be able to stand the heat as needed. Although the jury is out on how quickly the freshmen will adapt to the college game, the potential is there for immediate impact. And judging by the excitement seen throughout the summer and leading into the season, the players’ eagerness to do what it takes is palpable. The Brazil trip will be a great tool for tying the unit together, creating a strong bond and familiarizing the players with each other. That will be important as our schedule allows for very little room for error.

It has been four years since the LMU women’s soccer team won the conference and it’s time to contend again.

www.Railsplitters.com

2012 LMU Women’s Soccer

This year features a strong regional schedule, with top teams such as Alabama-Huntsville, USC Aiken, Columbus State, King and Trevecca Nazarene. The SAC schedule makes it no easier with Lenoir Rhyne and Wingate looking to continue their dominance from last year, and usual foes such as Tusculum, Anderson and Newberry added into the mix.

COACHING STAFF

Helio D’Anna HEAD COACH, TENTH SEASON

Coach Helio D’Anna, or Coach “L” (as he is known throughout the soccer world), begins his tenth season as head men’s and women’s soccer coach. Under his leadership, the men have accumulated four conference titles and two trips to the NCAA national tournament while the women have won four conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA national tournament. D’Anna came to LMU in the summer of 2003 and immediately re-invigorated the LMU soccer program, bringing with him a style of play and work ethic that returned both teams to the top of the conference standings. In 2004, the women’s team not only won five more matches than the previous season but also earned the program’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they reached the Elite Eight. The next season they followed that success with the program’s second Gulf South Conference title and another trip to nationals. After moving to the South Atlantic Conference in 2006 and being ineligible for conference play that season, they roared back in 2007 with a SAC title and reached the NCAA Southeast Region semifinals. The men’s teams have also enjoyed tremendous success under D’Anna’s tutelage. The won the GSC title in their final season in that conference in 2006. Despite being ineligible for conference play due to the move to the SAC, they earned the program’s first bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2007, advancing to the national semifinals. 2007 was a dream season for the Railsplitters as they not only captured the SAC regular-season and tournament titles, but they also advanced to the NCAA Championship match, where they fell in the final seconds to Franklin Pierce. D’Anna was named the 2004 NCAA South Region Coach of the Year with the women and the 2007 Appalachian Region Coach of the Year with the men. Prior to LMU, D’Anna served as head men’s soccer coach for nearby Union College where he compiled a 99-60-9 record. D’Anna guided Union to four Mid-South Conference Championships and was named Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year each of those seasons. Coach D’Anna’s 1999 and 2001 teams earned trips to the NAIA Region XI Championship match, and the HELIO D’ANNA 2001 team finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country. LMU YEAR BY YEAR RESULTS A native of São Paulo, Brazil, D’Anna majored in physical education at UniCamp-Brazil, and has a master’s degree in physical education from Union College, Ky. During the trip, the LMU soccer teams have the opportunity to train at various sites with various clubs. They also have opportunities to observe professional practices and to interact with professional players and coaches. One of the highlights of these trips is the opportunity to scrimmage various youth amateur teams affiliated with the academy sustems of the professional clubs in Brazil. Without a doubt, these are extremely challenging matches that prepare the LMU teams for the tough season ahead.

2012 LMU Women’s Soccer

Of course during the trip the players have also opportunities to do sightseeing, shopping, and activities to experience the local culture (including the world famous Brazilian cuisine). As importantly, the trip provides a great team bounding opportunity creating the right team chemistry that is so important in athletics.

THE SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE

24

The South Atlantic Conference is in its 37th year of athletic tradition and excellence. The distant forerunner of the South Atlantic Conference was the North State Atlantic Conference (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed when the “Little Six”, as it was called, broke from the North Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1930. These charter members included Lenoir-Rhyne College, Atlantic Christian, Catawba College, Guilford College, Elon College, and High Point University. The North State continued to grow over the next 30 years, adding Western Carolina (1933), East Carolina (1947) and Pfeiffer (1960). A name change became necessary when the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolina member in 1961. The league took on the name Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAC) on May 20th of that year. The CIAC saw several changes in the following years as East Carolina withdrew from the league in 1962. Appalachian State and Western Carolina followed in 1971 and 1976. All three landed in the Southern Conference. The South Atlantic Conference was founded in 1975 solely as a football conference. The league received its name from a contest in which Kurt Brenneman of Greensboro, NC became the first to submit the SAC-8 moniker. The SAC-8 consisted of Carson-Newman College, Catawba College, Elon College, Gardner-Webb University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Mars Hill College, Newberry College, and Presbyterian College. Dr. Fred Bentley, of Mars Hill College, was named league president for its inaugural year, by a vote of the member institutions. After the first season of play in the SAC-8, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College captured the first football title. In 1989, the league’s 15th year of operation, the South Atlantic Conference became a comprehensive, multisport conference. Doug Echols was named the league’s first Commissioner. That year the South Atlantic Conference sponsored 10 sports - football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis. Later the conference grew

to 14 championship sports by adding women ‘s soccer (1990), men’s and women’s cross country (1993) and women’s golf (1999). The South Atlantic Conference was composed of the same eight member institutions from 1975 until 1988, when Wingate University replaced Newberry College as the eighth member institution. Newberry later rejoined the conference in 1996. In July of 1998, Tusculum College was admitted as a member of the league, and Lincoln Memorial University began play in the conference in the 2006-07 academic year. Brevard College was admitted as a provisional member in 2007 and a full member in 2008. In 2008, Echols retired after serving as Commissioner for 19 years and Patrick Britz was hired as the new Commissioner. In July 2010, Anderson (S.C.) University became the league’s 10th member. Today the conference is a group of ten private, liberal and civic arts colleges and universities, similar in size and athletic philosophy. Since becoming eligible for NCAA Division II postseason play in 1993, the league has sent representatives from all of its sponsored sports to NCAA postseason play. The league membership now includes Anderson University in Anderson, S.C.; Brevard College in Brevard, N.C.; Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.; Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.; Lenoir-Rhyne University in

Hickory, N.C.; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.; Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C.; Newberry College in Newberry, S.C.; Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn.; and Wingate University in Wingate, N.C.

THIS IS LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY

2012 LMU Women’s Soccer

Lincoln Memorial University was founded in 1897 as a living memorial to Abraham Lincoln and his philosophy and ideals. Its inception dates from an occasion in the fall of 1863 when the President was meeting with General Oliver Otis Howard to discuss military operations in and around the Cumberland Gap and East Tennessee area. The President expressed his appreciation for the loyalty that the people of the region had shown to the Union during this time of Civil War. Pointing to the area on the map, Mr. Lincoln said, “General Howard, if you come out of all this horror and misery alive, and I hope that you may, I want you to do something for these people who have been shut out from the world all these years. If I live, I will do all I can to aid you and between us we may do them the justice they deserve. Please remember, and if God is good to us we may be able to speak of it later!” Mr. Lincoln did not live to see his dream fulfilled, but O.O. Howard (who also was a founder of Howard University) never forgot those words. In 1895, he traveled to the Cumberland Gap area to address a small academy that was operated by a Congregational minister, the Rev. A.A. Myers, and his wife Ellen. While he was there, the General remembered Lincoln’s request and joined with the Myers and several prominent friends to lay the groundwork for a university honoring the slain President. It was to be an institution whose mission and principles would exemplify the life of Abraham Lincoln. The philosophy articulated by these founders as a guide for University programs and curriculum was based on the following principles which were exemplified in the life of Abraham Lincoln: individual liberty; the privileges and responsibilities of the American government; love and respect for the fellow people; personal initiative, individual effort; unselfish leadership; an appreciation for the common people; free enterprise; and belief in a personal God. Now in its 115th year of operation, LMU has grown into a progressive university, offering over 30 majors. LMU’s Fall 2011 enrollment was 4,550 students and there were 153 faculty members at the main campus and twelve extended learning campus sites. The main campus is also home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which houses one of the largest Lincoln collections in the country.
