EDITOR

I C-OXYZYME

BB Plus The most effective BB balm on the market in 2014! Comes in 3 shades.

C-Oxyzyme Brightening Facial Melding state-of-the-art skin refiners with tried-andtrue change ingredients, this multilayered treatment contains the perfect balance of glycolic, lactic, malic, azelaic and phytic acids; retinol; nontoxic botanical brighteners; super vitamin C; powerful enzymes; hyaluronic acid; minerals and sun protection factors.

T IS A GREAT HONOR TO INTRODUCE MYSELF AS the new editor-in-chief of Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa magazine. It is a pleasure to join this dedicated team of individuals, diligently working to bring you all the latest developments in the ever-changing world of skin care and spa. I am extremely passionate about this industry and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it. I welcome you to contact me anytime. I am always available to answer any of your questions or concerns, and gladly accept any feedback or ideas. Teamwork is the foundation for success and I look forward to working with everyone. Experts say 2014 is the year of “mindfulness.” What exactly is mindfulness? It is the process of making a conscious effort to live in the present moment. Our March issue focuses on this principle to achieve a state of total well-being. Maintaining proper balance of the mind, body and soul is necessary to live a happy and fulfilled life. Incorporating these wellness principles into your spa/salon treatments will be instrumental in remaining competitive. For instance, Nina Curtis explains how to become one with your chosen mantra on page 102. Robert Sachs demonstrates how incorporating “kindness” into your practice can increase client retention rates on page 110. Both authors are featured speakers at The International Congress of Esthetics and Spa, Miami Beach this year, taking place on April 6th and 7th at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Curtis hosts the General Session and Sachs holds a seminar on incorporating Ayurvedic treatments into your spa with a demonstration on the “kansa wand.” I look forward to formally meeting you all at the show. Until then, I wish you all the best of health and success! n

Treatments incorporate the nourishing properties of the earth, leaving guests feeling relaxed and united with nature.

The styling, décor and ambiance are rustic yet luxurious. Treatment rooms are connected by a walkway woven through the trees. The treehouses are decorated with birch cabinets, mirrors are framed in tree bark and branches are placed together to form circular tables. Smaller twigs are artfully placed on the walls. Guests can relax on tables adorned with plush bedding while enjoying the sound of rustling leaves outside.

Tree Spa menu TREATMENT PRICES Sinus Soothing Herbal Face, Neck and Scalp Treatment 45 minutes for $100 Thai Yoga Massage 90 minutes for $200

The spa menu is harmonious with the facility’s philosophy of restoring the health, energy and wellness of every client. The focus is to restore the natural equilibrium of peace and harmony in each guest while simultaneously soothing their soul. It is performed with heated bamboo sticks to stimulate body tissues. These sticks symbolize life energy, strength and longevity. This helps promote circulation, lymphatic drainage and a deep sense of relaxation, resulting in a tingling or warming sensation over the whole body. 75 minutes for $175 continues

Best business practices • Guests are required to arrive 10 minutes prior to their appointments to ensure they are seen at their scheduled time. • A 24-hour cancellation notice is required for all appointments, or clients are billed for 100 percent of service and gratuity. • The guest ratio is 75 percent female to 25 percent male.

Guests at both resorts are encouraged to book a spa treatment through a pre-stay letter that comes directly from the resort. • The Tree Spa is primarily a resort spa, although locals are welcome. The majority of guests are visitors to Hidden Pond and its sister property, The Tides Beach Club. Guests at both resorts are encouraged to book a spa treatment through a pre-stay letter that comes directly from the resort. The spa books up quickly, particularly in summer months, given its limited size. • The Tree Spa does not use social media to boost business, though Hidden Pond Resort does utilize digital marketing and social media. • The menu is updated, though not drastically changed, on a yearly basis to keep up with spa trends. Each year, between five and seven treatments are refreshed or added to stay current. n

nurturing ingredients

by Erin Ferrill

WHETHER CLIENTS ARRIVE AT A spa seeking refuge and relaxation or simply have a specific skin concern, ingredients that nurture play an integral role in giving guests what they need.

A lesson in lavender This pretty purple flower is often associated with relaxation and rest, and for good reason. Lavender possesses anti-inflammatory properties. However, therapists should carefully consider the pros and cons before using high doses of this ingredient, particularly for clients with sensitive skin. Despite its calming scent, concentrated lavender is one of the most likely ingredients to cause sensitivity or a reaction.

Nurturing recommendations

WALDORF ASTORIA SPA AT WALDORF ASTORIA, PARK CITY, UT BRIGHTEN UP FACIAL 50 MIN, $160; 80 MIN, $230 • This brightening treatment helps address pigmentation concerns without the use of harsh chemicals by combining gentle exfoliation and a serum infused with proven natural skin brighteners like licorice and a brightening peptide. SPA TERRE AT LA PLAYA BEACH & GOLF RESORT, NAPLES, FL THERAPEUTIC FACIAL, 50 MIN, $135 • After a thorough but gentle cleansing, the calming treatment continues with the application of a blueberry mask and a concentrated serum, both infused with Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8 to neutralize. PRETTYOLOGY, BOSTON, MA THE OM FACIAL, 50 MIN, $135 • A gentle peel refreshes skin without irritation while a nourishing masque helps protect skin and restore hydration.

Since most clients are chronically timedeprived, finding treatments that effectively address multiple concerns is key to their satisfaction. Licorice is a great natural ingredient to use in a treatment. Long known for its ability to calm and soothe, in vitro studies show that when applied topically, one form of licorice, called licochalcone A, inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines, eicosanoids and reactive oxygen species in a number of human skin cells. Additionally, with twice daily application, clinical studies showed that licochalcone A was capable of reducing both erythema from UV radiation and irritation after shaving. Licorice also acts as a natural skin brightener, as it has the potential to inhibit tyrosinase, the enzyme associated with pigmentation. In vitro research indicates that three licorice flavonoids in particular show great promise for a brighter and more even complexion. These are licuraside, isoliquiritin and licochalcone A.

Leather leaf powder puff Nurturing skin is much like raising a child. We want to provide comfort and nourishment to help it thrive, but we also want it to be able to fend for itself. Globularia Cordifolia Callus Culture Extract provides the best of both worlds. This botanical stem cell is derived from a flower that is often referred to as “the leather leaf powder puff.” In clinical studies, Globularia Cordifolia Callus Culture Extract has been

With the exception of lavender, which should be used sparingly, the nurturing ingredients discussed are best used in leave-on products such as serums and moisturizers. Serums are particularly beneficial due to their concentrated formulations and low molecular weight, both of which contribute to improved delivery. The best nurturing products contain ingredients to achieve multiple skin care goals, such as products that address sensitivity concerns without giving up anti-aging benefits. Think of a gentle peel infused with nourishing and soothing ingredients, which would be appropriate for use on clients who normally could not benefit from a peel. Therapists are encouraged to use nourishing products in the treatment room and recommend them as part of a personalized home-care regimen. When guests experience the effects of the product during their facial, they are better able to understand the potential for long-term benefits with repeated use at home. n Erin Ferrill is a licensed esthetician and the national training and development manager for HydroPeptide®. Creative Ways of Greening Your Skin Care Services CONSUMER INTEREST IN WELLNESS, organic and green products continues to grow. Many spa clients are now shifting away from standard spa treatments. They are looking for services that take their entire well-being into account. By offering eco-friendly products and services, spas can increase their client base and provide a healthier experience for guests and staff.

Purchase raw ingredients and create your own spa recipes for truly unique formulations. Spas can really cut operational costs by figuring out ways to use the same ingredients in several treatments while also establishing a signature brand for the business. For example, if you use detoxifying body clay in your body wraps, then you can also use that for your mani-pedi

To create treatments from raw ingredients, start with the base first. Then, customize according to individual needs. For a scrub, start with an exfoliating agent like sugar, coffee grounds or salt.

First steps Client response to eco-friendly services is typically very positive. Clients usually expect spas to run sustainable businesses and offer organic options. Spa owners need to plan ahead for their new eco-friendly business model. Be prepared to present new services, products and operational changes to team members and clients. Identify what your spa culture is before creating your new eco-friendly menu. Think about what you are trying to build and what your specialty will be. For example, consider anti-aging, wellness or relaxation treatments. Next, select back bar and retail products that contain natural and healthy ingredients. Choose a few active ingredients to include in your treatments as your signature stock. Your spa may already have an identity. If your name is “Sage Spa,” then you know you want to include sage in your signature treatments! If you are focused on anti-aging, you will want to find natural ingredients that pack the most anti-aging potential, such as rose hips, which are high in vitamin C.

treatments. You can also customize with aromatherapy oils or herbs and use them in multiple treatments. The sky is the limit! To create treatments from raw ingredients, start with the base first. Then, customize according to individual needs. For a scrub, start with an exfoliating agent like sugar, coffee grounds or salt. Then add an emollient like shea butter to spread onto skin, mixed with an essential oil for aromatherapy. You can create several treatments based on just a few ingredients. For instance, with a base of coconut butter, you could add honey for a skin quenching “Cocoa Honey Hydration Wrap,” add ground coffee for a “Hot Java Scrub” or add cocoa powder for a moisturizing, delicious smelling facial mask! Body wraps can be highly customized as well. Mud, clay or seaweed could be mixed with a tea made of herbs, powders or active serums. With a simple change of ingredients, the same wrap could be changed to have mineralizing, toning, hydrating or exfoliating effects. continues

Create ultimate spa experiences Set up interactive bars where guests participate in the treatment by choosing their ingredients. If you offer hydrotherapy, create a bath bar. Label the ingredients with a one sentence description and have guests choose, or let them describe symptoms to a therapist who will create the bath. Combine the ingredients in a bath ball or tea bag. You can create an interactive bar with many treatments including scrubs, wraps and mani-pedis. Always have a base prepared and let the guest choose a few ingredients so it does not cut into the treatment time. You could also have them fill out a questionnaire in the waiting room before their treatments.

Marry two product lines

PURE INGREDIENTS Arnica is great for body treatments, as it has natural anti-inflammatory properties good for muscle pain and joint stiffness. Mustard powder detoxifies sore muscles with a warming quality. Carrot powder is a natural source of vitamin A that improves skin tone on the body and face. Natural caffeine is good for fluid retention. Wild yam powder is good for eczema, sun damage and improving skin elasticity.

Honey powder is a great humectant for dry skin. Green tea powder or extract is anti-aging. Bee pollen granules and rice bran powder are anti-aging and help with acne. Rose hips and evening primrose oil are high in vitamin B, which is good for irritated skin and post-menopausal skin. Combining rose hips powder, primrose oil, crushed herbs, green tea powder and coconut powder creates a rich, antioxidant-packed massage oil or facial mask.

Design your signature treatments Do something for every guest that is unique. You could start every massage with a purifying foot ritual, including an herbal foot soak or exfoliation, using hot towels with an essential oil to cocoon feet after the service. This sets you apart from the spa down the road and adds value. Find small ways to make the client feel special. Allowing them to choose some aspect of their treatment is a great option. They could select from three different herbal options for their spa treatment or the fragrance for a hot towel in their facial. People who are seeking the natural or organic lifestyle may also be looking at alternative methods of wellness. Guided meditation, visualization, Reiki, sound therapy and hot stone massage are great additions to natural skin care. Consider your location and any traditions native to your area of the country. You may also offer elements from a local native American tribe in your region to bless or set the tone for a treatment with something indigenous. continues

You can create an interactive bar with many treatments including scrubs, wraps and mani-pedis. Always have a base prepared and let the guest choose a few ingredients so it does not cut into the treatment time.

For those who are in a hurry, you can use a preblended professional product line with natural ingredients. Promote your professional spa retail items by including them in your signature facial and body treatments. Natural products will also combine well with your high-tech treatments. If you offer services like microcurrent, microdermabrasion, low-level laser therapy, medical-grade peels or hair removal, then eco-friendly aftercare is an effective option. Calm and soothe skin after treatment with products containing aloe, lavender or rice powder. Retail these items at checkout so guests can use them at home.

Create a beautiful presentation with apothecary jars or mortars and pestles for grinding fresh ingredients.

Natural product allergies As with all skin care offerings, you will need to consider any client contraindications before giving treatments. Because natural skin and body care products contain essential oils, clients who are pregnant or nursing may need to consult with their physician. Spa professionals should also be aware of general product and environmental allergies. If a client does have an allergic reaction, respond the same way you would with any skin care reaction. Immediately remove the product. Apply a cool compress and perform a gentle scalp or foot massage while you are waiting for the sensation to stop. Look at the affected area and note if the redness or swelling has decreased. Apply a neutral product like shea or coconut butter to calm and soothe the area.

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS GREEN 1. Turn off the lights when they are not in use. 2. Install energy efficient lighting such as LED bulbs and low-flow faucet aerators. 3. Switch to chlorine-free (PCF) paper products made with recycled content. 4. Use organic cotton supplies and table paper produced from recycled content. 5. Use biodegradable plastic to wrap your spa tables, and use linens for body wraps. 6. Stop selling or providing bottled water. Instead, keep recycled paper cups or reusable containers onhand.

As with any new changes in operations or procedures, your staff needs to be involved from the beginning. Natural products often have a different means of application, a different consistency and may need to be prepared in a new manner. Technicians need time to get used to the new methods or learn to mix the formulas. Promote your new eco-friendly spa services and products through all client communication mediums. Let your clients see your new professional products in your retail area and feature interactive displays they can smell and test. Create a beautiful presentation with apothecary jars or mortars and pestles for grinding fresh ingredients. A testing station allows clients to create their own concoctions for home care, with some guidance from your staff. Offering new eco-friendly treatments as upgrades is a good way to introduce them to your regular clients and integrate them into your menu. Any type of add-on that you create with your mainstream products can also be made with natural ingredients. A great idea for a lip treatment is a sugar and jojoba oil exfoliation. If the client gets a granule in her mouth, it is still an edible treat! When pricing your new treatments, consider the fact that the cost per treatment with natural ingredients you mix yourself will be a lot lower than traditional products. It is up to you to decide whether or not to pass those savings on to your clients or to increase your business revenue. However, be sure to take into account the increased labor that is required to mix the formulas. Offer beautiful packaging for these spa products you mix yourself and retail them as gift items. Investing in those details creates more revenue and builds business through client referrals. n Jenny Farrand is a licensed esthetician, massage therapist and director of education for Universal Companies, Inc. MEDITERRANEAN

beauty benefits

THE ANCIENT GREEK CONCEPTS OF health and beauty are revered by many people. Helen of Troy was so beautiful that the Trojan War was fought to win her love. So what is it about the Greeks that makes the world idolize them for their health and beauty—both then and now? Modern research reveals how powerful the effects of diet and lifestyle are on the body’s internal health and skin physiology. The Mediterranean diet and lifestyle is a major component in maintaining a radiantly healthy and beautiful look. This diet consists of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. People in this region receive ample sunlight and inhale clean sea air. Vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and enzymes are also incorporated into daily life. The strong connection between Greeks and the natural world allows them to harness the power of the abundant natural resources in the Mediterranean Sea to create healing and restorative treatments and therapies. Here are some ways we can use this wisdom to incorporate effective additions into our treatment menus.

Thalassotherapy

photo: Corbis

Derived from the Greek words “thalasso,” meaning sea, and “therapia,” meaning healing, thalassotherapy utilizes the therapeutic effects of water, mud and algae from the sea to detoxify and heal the body’s tissues. In 350 B.C., Hippocrates, the

father of ancient Greek medicine, utilized sea water immersion to cure his patients of arthritis and muscle aches. Seawater has an almost identical composition to human plasma. The minerals in sea water, including calcium, magnesium, sodium, iodine, sulfur, selenium, zinc, fluoride and silicon, can help treat inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema and acne. Its detoxification benefits aid in lymphatic drainage, which helps improve metabolism and reduce cellulite. Thalassotherapy helps relieve muscular and back pain, tension and stress. It also enhances immune and cardiovascular functioning, increases relaxation and improves sleep benefits. A study conducted in Brazil found that patients with hypertension benefited after treatment. Both their diastolic and systolic blood pressure decreased after following a program of walking and thalassotherapy.

Vinotherapy Vinotherapy, the therapeutic use of grapes and wine practiced in ancient Greece, has regained attention in modern times. Research has uncovered the high polyphenol content and powerful skin benefits of grapes. There are naturally exfoliating grape acids found in the juice. The seeds are high in antioxidants, with anti-aging and firming resveratrol in the stalks. Viniferine, a brightening liquid, is stored in its sap. 4

Chamomile can be used as a painkiller. Mint leaves can be used as an antiseptic. Sage is rich in antioxidants. All of these items can be infused into herbal compresses. When steamed and applied to the body in circular rolling movements, the compress can effectively relieve body pain and inflammation. It can also soothe muscular aches and swelling. This can be an excellent addition to a massage, exfoliation or body wrap treatment.

Fruit enzyme exfoliators Fruits such as figs, apricots, pomegranates and citrus were considered symbols of fertility. They were given as a gift from Demeter, the Greek goddess of harvest and soil. Figs were used to refresh and brighten the skin due to their hydrat-

ing properties, grainy texture and natural alpha hydroxy acid content. Apricots, high in antioxidants such as vitamin A and beta carotene, were noted for their natural detoxification properties. Pomegranates containing ellagic acid, anthocyanins and tannins possess powerful anti-aging continues

Mastica, a resin crystal taken from the sap of trees on the Greek island of Chios, was cherished for its potent antibacterial, anti-aging and brightening properties. what lies

BENEATH

WE CAN SEND A MAN TO THE MOON. Next year, the first flying car may be put on the market. Yet we still do not know all that much about the exact cause of acne! We only have educated guesses. Acne affects approximately 650 million people globally, or about 9.4 percent of the world’s population. In the United States, acne affects 40 to 50 million people— approximately 16 percent of the population! While hormones, stress, bad cleansing habits and heredity may increase the severity of acne, the initial cause of acne probably lies deep within our internal organs. Anyone who has ever done a cleanse of the body knows that one of the first benefits we see is that the skin immediately looks clearer and brighter. This could be all the proof we need to start looking beneath the skin. 4

Recommend that your clients complete a liver detox to achieve clearer, brighter skin. • Eat fresh, unprocessed natural foods. • Drink a minimum of two quarts of water per day with the addition of lemon juice, and limit caffeine and alcohol intake. • Take a garlic supplement, which has sulfur-containing compounds that activate liver enzymes to flush out any remaining toxins.

Have you ever seen a map of the face, showing where certain zones of acne could be related to internal problems within the body? For example, acne on Zone 7 of the face, also known as the nose, could mean that your client has high blood pressure—or it could be an early sign of rosacea. Breakouts in Zones 1 and 3, also known as the forehead, could mean that they have bladder or respiratory issues, and may need to drink more water. Even though the medical community may say that science cannot prove any of this, could face mapping be the beginning of an unidentified answer? Not knowing the root cause of acne can be frustrating for esthetics/medical professionals. Acne could simply be a cause and effect disease, due to internal organs that are failing to properly remove dangerous toxins from the body. One organ can reflect the health status of another organ, or even the entire body. continues

• Zones 1 and 2: Acne can be linked to the digestive system and the bladder. Your client may need to drink more water and eat a healthier, more balanced diet. • Zone 3: Acne can be linked to the liver. Your client may need to cut down on dairy and alcohol intake. • Zones 4, 6, 8 and 10: Acne can be linked to the kidneys. Your client may need to cut caffeine, alcohol and soda out of their diet. • Zones 5 and 9: Acne can be linked to the respiratory system. If your client is a smoker, then acne in this area can be linked to nicotine. Allergies can also play a role. • Zone 7: Acne is linked to the heart. Having high blood pressure can contribute to acne in this area. • Zone 12: Acne can be linked to the stomach and small intestine. Breakouts can be caused by a buildup of toxins. Your client may need to include more fiber in their diet. • Zones 11 and 13: Acne can be related to hormonal imbalances. • Zone 14: Acne in this area shows signs of illness or a possible bacterial infection. Your client may need to take more vitamins to boost up their immune system.

There are three major organs in the human body that are responsible for the elimination of waste and toxins. They are the liver, the kidneys and the skin. Acne and inflammation are expressions of toxins in the body that are not being released through normal channels of elimination, so instead they are released through the skin. If the liver and kidneys are overwhelmed by the number of substances needing to be eliminated from the system, the skin takes over. Conventional doctors who do not believe in holistic health only look at what is happening topically, and liver functions are often overlooked in acne cases. The challenge is that many doctors do not properly investigate. Did they take the necessary steps to diagnose the underlying cause of the client’s acne? Did they ask the client about their diet? How often are they excreting waste? Is the client fatigued? Did they offer a blood test to look further into possible causes? Frequently, when clients return for a followup, they often say that the doctor just put them on antibiotics. Not only do antibiotics kill the good bacteria in our bodies, they are usually just a temporary fix. When antibiotics do not work, the doctors then sometimes put clients on stronger drugs that contain isotretinoin, which shuts down oil production. However, the oil production is necessary to keep the skin youthful. I suggest that acne patients get a blood test, and possibly even have their bowels tested to properly assess what is happening on the inside. There are certain functional liver tests that measure its detoxification capability. Physicians

could try this method first before placing their clients on aggressive drugs. As an esthetician, I can only help clients improve the texture, tone and pH balance of their skin. The best relationship an esthetician could have is a partnership with a doctor who is willing to properly test clients for accurate treatment of acne and inflammation. Antibiotics along with other drugs should be a last resort when all other tests have come back negative. n

salt therapy

by Patti Biro

Salt. It sits on our kitchen coun-

ters. It flavors our food and provides the necessary nutrients to maintain blood pressure. We use it in scrubs and treatments. Salt is one of the oldest additives, as well as one of the most therapeutic substances on the planet. So what is a salt cave? Let’s find out with a visit to the Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa, a wellness destination located in the business district of Asheville, NC.

Open since the fall of 2012, the Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa is the first of its kind in the United States. Every year, Asheville draws large numbers of visitors who come to enjoy its natural beauty and charm, and tour the world famous Biltmore Estate. All of the salt used in the construction of the cave comes from Poland, where salt therapy has been practiced since the mid-1800s. Polish salt is considered to be the purest form of salt on the planet.

Mingle and shop A visit to the Salt Market is a highlight of any trip to the salt cave. The mix of salt focused retail items changes frequently, but always offers a way to enjoy the benefits of the salt cave at home.

The inspiration It is a dream turned into reality by Jody Appel and her family. Her father, who was suffering from lung problems, visited a European salt cave and immediately felt better. He then decided to share this therapy with others.

Activities visitors can enjoy at the Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa Enjoying spa treatments is just part of the experience. There are many other ways guests can spend their time at the Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa. • Take a yoga class • Bring kids to play in the salt and sand • Meditate • Hold a “Baby Blessing” event to welcome a newborn • Create a mandala out of salt • Receive a reflexology treatment • Buy a salt lamp to purify the home or workplace

A sustainable micro-environment The salt cave is a microclimate, and it is 100 percent sustainable. No artificial or synthetic materials were used in its construction. The entire cave is made up of salt, wood and water. Two water features inside are used to “feed” the salt and encourage continued growth.

Salt therapy and more Visitors to the Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa can schedule a 45-minute session to experience the relaxation, balance and harmony of this unique environment seven days a week. Salt therapy has been shown to boost the immune system and improve a number of health conditions, ranging from respiratory issues to skin ailments, depression, allergies, arthritis, digestive problems and other cardiovascular or nervous system concerns.

Spa and wellness treatments You can turbocharge the benefits of the salt cave environment by creating an effective treatment menu. The cave offers salt glow treatments, reflexology, Reiki treatments and facials using hot salt stones, hot salt packs and salt scrubs, as these services all adhere to the theme.

Business success The Asheville Salt Cave & Salt Spa has an active presence on social media, including a number of Pinterest boards. Many first-time guests are introduced to the cave through social media as well as word of mouth.

Parties, meetings and more Businesses looking for a unique venue for an event or gathering can rent the salt cave. The healthy environment can be used for a retreat, board meeting, seminar or even a wedding! History Since the beginning of time, man has sought ways to ease aches, pains, ailments and physical illness. Ancient civilizations were developed around natural springs, where the activity of “taking the waters” was born. With it, the term “Sanus Per Aquam” (SPA), meaning health by or through water was established. Archeologists have found many historic churches and religious structures that were built near and in some cases over natural springs. This established the belief that taking the waters was not only practiced, but has endured over centuries. In local forests, woodlands and regions, where many varieties of plants and herbs grow, wild animals seek out what they need for health, wellness and nutrition. Shamans and village healers studied the habits of local wildlife, and watched how they behaved in both good health and pain. Soon humans began imitating the natural instincts of his fellow creatures and used nature to heal. Natural healing practices have endured throughout history. Knowledge was passed down from generation to generation through word of mouth. Many practices are used today in varying forms. In many areas of the world, these practices are the only ones that exist. Places such as the Amazon rainforest, or other remote areas, can only use plants and herbs to cure ailments.

Early influencers Most professionals in the wellness industry have heard of Ayurveda. This 5,000-year-old practice focuses on creating balance in the mind, body and spirit through a variety of treatment modalities. Examples include external body treatments, supplements, meditation and gemstone therapy. Panchakarma is the therapeutic process of cleansing toxins from the system to give the body balance. A simple acne treatment from India, it involves applying a paste, made from turmeric and sandalwood, directly to the affected area. continues

Chinese medicine practices are very popular and take many years to learn. Acupuncture is used to open energy meridians. Medicinal herbs in powders or pills are also used. In fact, in Singapore, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is widely used by about 74 percent of the population. Some of the lesser known methods may seem unusual. However, they are based on people’s culture, customs and desired healing outcome.

Many healers and methods The sources for healing ingredients, such as plants, herbs, flowers, bark, sap, muds, clays and nuts are as numerous as the formulas in which they are used. Here are some interesting examples: In Morocco, where Berber herbalists are popular, many locals seek medical help the holistic way. For example, a clove is placed directly on the tooth to ease pain from a toothache. If someone is suffering from insomnia, a local remedy infuses red poppy flower into tea. For irritated eyes, a cloth soaked in Moroccan rose water is the aromatic remedy of choice. The people of Turkey feel that the trick to staying healthy is “mesir paste.” This concoction, which contains a blend of 41 different spices, dates back to the Ottoman Empire. It is used as a general cure-all tonic that has some well-known ingredients like licorice root, coconut, orange peel, black pepper and cinnamon. Other ingredients, such as woad, udulkahr, mastic and yellow myrobalan, may be hard to find in the United States. However, the drink is natural and very healthy. In Australia, the ingredient of choice to promote health and beauty is delicious and natural. Ligurian honey, found on Kangaroo Island, is considered rare and powerful. Honey

Heal thyself Every country and culture has ways to heal its citizens. In America, the rising cost of health care motivates many people to take charge of their own health by using healing practices. Americans spend over $40 billion out of pocket on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) to help prevent illness. They promote their health and well-being with vitamins, supplements, meditation, yoga and more. Scientific research has uncovered new medicines, but also credits old wives’ tales and healing methods. The quest for healing ingredients, compounds and practices has a long history. From mold on bread to flu vaccines, if we have come this far with our learning of healing practices, imagine what the future holds! n Alison Howland is president of Spa Success Consultants, Inc. She develops spas and their businesses, helping them with marketing and branding strategies, management, education and sales. Howland has successfully opened spas in nine countries, writes articles for a variety of industry publications and frequently speaks at trade events.

IN AFRICA, THE PRACTICE OF DRUMMING RHYTHMICALLY TO INDUCE A MEDITATIVE STATE IS STILL USED BY SHAMANS.

is naturally anti-bacterial and loaded with antioxidants. A great choice for skin care, it is used to treat everything from minor wounds and blemishes to inflammations. In Brazil, where access to the rainforest is readily available, many natural remedies are used. The acai almond is used to treat a variety of ailments, and has been found to have strong energetic properties. Feeling a little light-headed? The Brazilian antidote is guarana powder. Being high in caffeine, the powder is known to help improve brain function. If you get a cough while in Colombia, you may find half a potato near your pillow. This is believed to ease the cough and help you sleep. If you have a tummy ache, the Colombians will boil an aloe vera plant and tell you to drink the water with sugar or honey. While this is not very tasty, it is known to work quickly. Native Americans have a long history of tapping into the wisdom of botanicals and healing practices. Sweat lodge ceremonies, led by tribal elders, incorporate natural ingredients like sage, clay, willow, agave cactus and honey. These cleansing ceremonies have long-lasting results and transformational properties. However, not all healing treatments use plants and herbs. Some use sound to promote a state of balance in the mind to heal the body. In Africa, the practice of drumming rhythmically to induce a meditative state is still used by shamans, members of tribal societies that are able to “connect” with the invisible spirit world. Australian Aboriginal medicine men use both drumming and percussive music to aid in healing.

soul therapy BY GLORIA COPPOLA

the journey to discovering your life’s purpose “We come this way but once. We can tiptoe through life and hope we get to death without being too badly bruised or we can live a full life, complete life, achieving our goals and our wildest dreams.“ ~ Bob Proctor Our souls call out to us. If we listen, we can live a life of purpose. We will be in tune with the natural vibration of the cycle of life. Just as nature has cycles, we are also a part of those cycles, going through changes: evolving, dying and blossoming.

How do we know what we are called to do? Is there a feeling deep down somewhere in our beings, gnawing at us? Should we listen? When we arrive in the arms of our parents, full of light and joy, there is hope that one day we will be something great. Our parents and teachers groom, educate and love us the best they can. Perhaps we do not become the scientist or doctor they want us to be. Perhaps we get discouraged by naysayers who criticize us and say we will amount to nothing in life. We hear and witness so many things as children that determine whether or not we decide to pursue our purpose with passion. Some of us find a job we are not passionate about, yet we settle for it to pay bills. Some of us may feel victimized by our lives and society. And some of us blossom, evolve and achieve all our goals! Which path are we following?

How do we know if we are listening to our souls? If we are not compromising our beliefs, then perhaps we are listening well. When our souls speak to us and we listen, we are in direct alignment with our life’s mission. Our lives will become fuller and richer on many levels, and there will be a sense of internal peace. Over the course of our lives, we have many different experiences. When the purposes of our souls are not aligned, we often may experience many things that frustrate or confuse us. For example, perhaps we lose a job or a loved one dies, and nothing seems to be going right. For whatever reason, bad experiences seem to find us. Life keeps flowing naturally, and therefore we must look at these changes as part of that cycle. Some of us will even fall into a depression, which can actually help us explore our soul’s purpose if March 2014 • Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa

we are willing to listen. “When one door closes, another one opens,” is a true statement. However, we must be willing to go through that door. Some of our greatest challenges will make us aware of who we are! When I studied with many shamans and kahunas, the first thing they asked me was, “Who are you?” They weren’t referring to the profession or position I held. They wanted me to delve deep into my soul, to know without a doubt who I really was! In her book E2, Pam Grout states: “Despite what you may think you’re thinking, it’s quite likely there’s an even bigger thought getting in your way. There’s something wrong with me. I’m not good enough. I have no talent. It’s too hard. I don’t deserve it, etc.” These negative thoughts and statements are preventing us from achieving our life’s purpose. The good news, as Grout explains, is that it is not true. Let us start writing our new story. The old book is closed. It is time to get a journal and start writing about the new life we have. That’s right! You must write as if you are telling a story about what you have already achieved. Imagine it, deserve it, breathe it in and believe it! Our souls require our attention. The soul knows our passions. As Oprah Winfrey said, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.” When we tap into this energy, we are tapping into the passion that lives in our souls. Do you enjoy the creative arts or wish that you could paint or play an instrument? If that craving is there, then do something about it! Everyone has creative abilities if they are willing to draw something on a piece of paper. One day my soul called me to play the flute. I laughed, because although I love music, I am not very musically inclined. However, I listened to that calling because every night in my dreams I heard the flute playing. I contacted a colleague, who is a professional flute player, and asked her about lessons. She laughed and said, “All you need is one lesson ... now breathe into the flute.” What should we do next? What will satisfy us? Taking a walk in nature can clear the mind and stimulate creative energy. In this fast paced, technological world, we often spend too much time in the dark and sitting at computers, thus missing the human connection that was intended to inspire our souls. continues LNEONLINE.com • Page 63

We must explore new things, surround ourselvelves with positive people, read inspirational books, take new classes, get out in nature, act like a child again, eat healthier, be appreciative and dance!

We must trust that there is a divine plan. Observe and witness what is happening in nature. Get inspired by the life cycles! There are three stages of awareness: sleep, awake and aware. Which category are we in? In my experience, most people are asleep. Are we afraid of living? Are we so comfortable in our lives that even though we may wish for better, we allow fear to stop us from making changes? Are old habits being repeated? By seeking more education, finding support groups, attending therapy sessions or even consulting with our closest friends, we can learn about ourselves and live the life of our dreams! Our imagination is one of our greatest tools! We must look at who or what inspires us. Who do we admire and why? Many of the people we admire have not had easy lives, and have faced their own struggles. They may have been misunderstood or rejected. This is a common theme among those that find their life’s purpose. Even Jesus and Socrates were executed for following their calling in life.

“How many times do we lose an occasion for soul work by leaping ahead to final solutions without pausing to savor the undertones? We are a radically bottom line society, eager to act and end tension, and thus we lose opportunities to know ourselves for our motives and secrets.” ~ Thomas Moore, Care of the Soul We must use the opportunities that are right in front of us and face conflicts and challenges head on. This teaches us what is truly important to our souls, and helps us find our life’s purpose. What is our relationship with our life? That is the question our souls are asking.

Take time to honor all aspects of the gifts you have been given. Give gratitude daily. Remember this insightful quote from Issac Newton: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You receive what you give to the world.” ~ Gary Zukov, Seat of the Soul

We must do anything that will make us laugh again and bring the passion back into our lives. I have taken many risks in my life, and have essentially started over four times. Each time I start over it has led me to greater peace. I love what I do. Our souls speak to us through these messages. Listen! When we take action, we will live the life we have manifested. n

plays an important role in Indian culture. It has been featured in early Ayurvedic texts dating back over 4,000 years. Every Sunday, Indian mothers would give their children and other members of the family a scalp massage. The belief was that this practice would help improve memory and concentration. The treatment has become a necessity in modern times. The fast-paced lifestyle of today, along with stress and associated illnesses, are often our greatest maladies. Spas around the world are offering various scalp treatments, including the Indian head massage, as part of their menu. Essential oils can be included in the service to enhance the experience. Make sure to select the appropriate oil to get the desired response. Possible scents include lavender, mandarin, chamomile, ylang ylang or rose. 4

How to incorporate scalp therapy as an add-on:

Research has shown that when the scalp is stimulated, the “feel good” chemicals in the brain, endorphins and serotonin, are released. These chemicals can help put your client in a better mood, reduce their stress and create a relaxing environment. Spa guests usually arrive complaining of such ailments as muscle pain, especially in the neck and shoulders, as well as tension headaches. Scalp massage can improve circulation and remove muscle tension. If your client sits at a desk all day in front of a computer or sleeps in an awkward position, they may experience stiffness in their neck. Scalp massages help alleviate their pain.

Research shows that people who received a scalp massage before bedtime had improved sleep habits.

Migraines present a new challenge, as they stem from different root causes. Only a few studies have examined the effect of scalp massage on treating tension headaches. In 2008, a pilot study involving 16 participants found that scalp massage may help reduce the frequency, intensity and duration of these headaches. Researchers are also investigating whether massage may help to prevent them. continues

• 15-minute addition to a hair treatment in the salon. • Offer as part of a manicure service as the client waits for their nail polish to dry. • A full 45-minute treatment can be added to your service menu. This is also costeffective, as the scalp massage requires no expensive equipment.

Having a 45-minute reflexology session combined with a 30-minute scalp treatment is one of the most relaxing spa combinations I have ever experienced. Those suffering from insomnia can also benefit from this treatment. Research shows that people who received a scalp massage before bedtime had improved sleep habits. Performing a scalp massage to combat hair loss is also popular. The service should be completed by a trained therapist. sels are opened up, which allows the hair to absorb more nutrients. All hair follicles need an adequate supply of nutrients in order to grow. The procedure is also relaxing, and reduces feelings of stress. Use nourishing oils during the scalp massage to reduce the chance of interrupting the growth process. This also helps prevent dandruff, dry skin and split ends. Scalp massage is a simple treatment that can be offered as an add-on to many services in the spa. The service is excellent for mobile therapists, and a great treatment to use in a corporate office setting, as no clothes need to be removed. Over the years I have trained many massage therapists who have added this treatment to their existing menu. Speaking from firsthand experience, I can honestly say that having a 45-minute reflexology session combined with a 30-minute scalp treatment is one of the most relaxing spa combinations I have ever experienced. n

FLOAT YOUR CLIENTS’ CARES AWAY

defying gravity ANTIGRAVITY TREATMENTS ARE ON THE RISE FOR 2014! We generally do not think about the fact that we fight gravity every day. The ongoing battle of gravity impacts us when we are standing, walking, running, sitting or laying down. Parts of our body are always in contact with the earth. This immense pressure always creates stress and tension on specific parts of the body, such as the spine, neck, shoulders, knees, hip joints, lower back, abdomen and soles of the feet. Think about how hard our hearts have to work to create proper blood flow and maintain our bodies.

How new is this concept of antigravity, and where did it all begin? During the early 1950s, John C. Lilly, M.D. was studying psychoanalysis at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He was interested in the origins of conscious activity within the human brain, and whether it required external stimulation in order to maintain a conscious state. This led to the invention of the first “isolation tank.” The tank provided an environment that was completely isolated, depriving the brain of any external stimulation. The eight-foot vertical tank was filled with ocean water, and the subject was completely submerged with an oxygen tank. By the late 1960s, Dr. Lilly used a solution made of Epsom salts, which is non-irritating to the skin and allows the body to float easily on the surface of the water. This eliminated the need for the oxygen mask. This unique environment has phenom-

Here are the newest trends in antigravity therapies: Floating tanks/floatation therapy Tanks come in various shapes and sizes, depending on the manufacturer. The tank resembles an oversized, enclosed bathtub. Tanks are filled with 10 to 11 inches of water that have been saturated with 800 to 1,000 lbs (360-500 kg) of Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate). They are designed to mimic being in the womb. The salt water and air inside the chamber are regulated to maintain a temperature of 95.9 F (35.5 C), the same as surface skin temperature. The environment is completely dark (earplugs are provided) to engage the brain in self-healing and self-improvement.

Why Epsom salt? Epsom salt is easily absorbed by the skin. Stress strips the body of magnesium, and therefore increases the levels of adrenaline. Magnesium can help regulate the activity of enzymes, reduce inflammation, produce serotonin, increase energy, assist with muscle and nerve function and prevent the hardening of arteries. Sulfates help with the absorption of nutrients, eliminate toxins, relax the nervous system, soothe back pain, help with muscle strains and speed up the skin’s healing process. continues

enal benefits. It allows users to relax every single muscle, and gives one the freedom to let go both physically and mentally. In the 1970s, Peter Suedfeld and Roderick Borrie named this “sensory deprivation” technique Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (REST). In 1982, the International REST Investigators Society (IRIS) was created. Their ongoing research continues to be shared globally. Research in Sweden has proven that “floating” has therapeutic effects on stress and pain. Individuals using early “floating tanks” expressed that they enjoyed the experience and found it extremely healing and relaxing, especially for pain, stress, swelling, anxiety and jet lag. The boom of “float centers” in the 1980s continues today in countries all over the world. All share a common theme of focusing on therapies that offer wellness and stress reduction. IF A CLIENT IS EXPERIENCING MODERATE TO SEVERE STRESS, THEY SHOULD HAVE FIVE TO 10 FLOATS AT A FREQUENCY OF TWICE PER WEEK FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS, AND THEN ONCE A WEEK. The latest trends in floating pools, pods and spas include: floating in a golden shell, bath/floatation tubs, spa floatation pools, natural spring saltwater pools, floating in an open float pool and even a float tank for couples. Antigravity cardio workouts and yoga are also available. Classes are conducted on suspended hammocks. The workout combines the elements of yoga, aerial arts, Pilates and dance. During the hour-long class, students perform their techniques depending on their levels of expertise.

Most bathers choose to bathe nude, because swimsuits can create compressed stress points. Most centers schedule a one-hour session, while others offer two to three-hour sessions, depending on the client’s needs. At the end of the float, guests take a shower to remove all traces of the salt, and then take about 20 to 30 minutes to regroup. The true benefits of floating are usually experienced after the third or fourth treatment.

Recommendations for clients If a client is experiencing moderate to severe stress, they should have five to 10 floats at a frequency of twice per week for the first two weeks, and then once a week. After that, have one float every four to six weeks to maintain a state of homeostasis. If a client is experiencing low stress and general relaxation, they should have one float per week for two weeks, followed by one float every four to six weeks. Research indicates that floating for about 40 minutes can reduce cortisol levels and help bring the body back to homeostasis. Being in an antigravity environment relieves our brain and skeletal system from the “ongoing pull” of gravity.

Antigravity yoga relaxes compressed joints, sculpts and increases flexibility through climbing and swinging movements. Antigravity exercise helps to improve blood circulation and re-energizes the brain.

Antigravity fitness equipment Over the past 20 years, doctors in California have designed an exercise program for NASA astronauts. They came up with an antigravity treadmill that sucked air out of a chamber to create artificial gravity. The antigravity treadmill can support up to 80 percent of a runner’s body weight. This is ideal for orthopedic rehabilitation patients, children, seniors, dieters, athletes and runners.

Calorie scorcher It is always wonderful to get submerged in some refreshing water. Splashing around in the water actually burns calories and tones muscle. Water provides 12-15 times more resistance than air. This means that one can burn three times more calories walking in water than walking at a moderate pace.

Glossary of Ayurvedic terms Abhyanga, pronounced “ah-be-ung-o,” is an Ayurvedic massage performed by two practitioners who massage warm oil into the entire body. This helps loosen and facilitate the removal of accumulated “ama” (toxins) and “doshas” (vata, pitta and kapha).

Ayurveda, pronounced “ah-yoor-vay-da,” is made up of two words: “Ayur,” meaning life, and “veda,” meaning knowledge. Put together, Ayurveda literally means “the knowledge of life.” Another accurate translation is “the knowledge of longevity.” Ayurveda roots lie in ancient Indian culture. The practice unveils the secret relationship between humans and nature, and why cooperation is necessary to ensure well-being.

Dosha, pronounced “doe-sha,” is an Ayurvedic term for three mind and body qualities that all people are presumed to possess: vata, pitta and kapha. Most people are made up of a combination of all three types. However, one or two usually dominate.

BY TERI PEARMAN ESSENTIAL OILS ARE EXTRACTED FROM plant seeds, roots, wood, resin, leaves, twigs, needles, flowers and fruit. Knowing where the oil is derived from on the plant provides additional insight into how to use them in your practice. For example, a function of the root system is to keep the plant firmly grounded in the earth. If you are working with a client who is anxious and disconnected, a root derived essential oil might be a good option. VETIVER (Vetveria zizanoides), known as the oil of tranquility, is calming and emotionally grounding. When added to skin care treatments, it calms acne and neutralizes oily skin. Vetiver has a strong scent that one either loves or hates, so be sure to check with your client before including it in your formulations. Although safe at higher dilutions, only one or two drops per ounce of carrier oil is required. Contrast root essential oils with essential oils made from flowers. Flowers attract pollinators. This makes them irresistible to bugs, birds and humans. Flowers arouse feelings of peace, love and sometimes arousal. Consider using NEROLI (Citrus aurantium var. amara) essential oil and steam distilled from the flowers of the bitter orange tree in blends for clients who need strong emotional support. This gentle oil has a potent citrus scent and calms the nervous system. Neroli is quite expensive, costing as much as $2.00 per drop. The good news is that it rarely takes more than one drop per ½ oz. of carrier oil or cream to produce a potent and emotionally stabilizing massage cream. Seeds symbolize the beginning of new life. They hold all the potential a plant has yet to manifest. Seed essential oils support the need for new creation and rejuvenate emotional well-being. CARROT SEED (Daucus carota) essential oil has the same effect on skin. High in carotol, it is particularly helpful with regenerating mature skin, affected by harsh weather conditions and

environmental toxins. Carrot seed scent is powerful, so a little goes a long way. For use on mature skin, add three to five drops per ½ ounce of jojoba or rose hip seed oil. This mixture will last your client several weeks— long enough for them to see the benefits. Leaves help plants breathe and absorb nutrients. EUCALYPTUS (Eucalyptus globulus) essential oil, derived from the eucalyptus leaf, helps us do that too. For example, placing only one drop on a tissue helps clients with sinus congestion to breathe easier. Add a couple drops to an ounce of skin care cream and you have an effective chest rub for cold symptoms. Essential

oils derived from leaves are energizing. Help your clients transition from deep relaxation by diffusing some at the end of treatments. This reawakens the mind and encourages deep breathing. Essential oils derived from the bark or limbs of a tree represent the human muscular and skeletal systems. They are very effective in treating body aches and pains. Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens), also known as Holy Wood essential oil, has a warm and smoky scent. It is made with steam distilled from old wood and fallen limbs of the Palo Santo tree. This will clear the energy in your treatment room between clients. The gentle essential oil is high in the chemical d-limonene, which has soothing qualities. These essential oils are safe for the skin when used at a one percent dilution rate (five to six drops per ounce of carrier oil or cream). When using essential oils on clients with sensitive skin, it is best to let them smell it first and see if they like it, and then do a skin patch test. Place a small amount of product on the inner arm and wait a few minutes. Essential oils attach themselves to oil rather than water based products. business

growing your business organically

by Dori Soukup

ENTREPRENEURS ARE ALWAYS looking for ways to increase spa revenue, enhance performance and grow their business. How about you? Are you looking for ways to boost your business in 2014? You can start by focusing on organic growth.

f. Gather a focus group and survey your clients for valuable feedback. Apply these strategies and watch your profits increase!

3. Reactivation

Organic growth is easy when your plan includes the 3 Rs: 1. Referrals 2. Retention 3. Reactivation

photo: istockphoto.com/Yuri Arcurs

1. Referrals No matter what kind of business owner you are, generating referrals is for everyone on the team. Did you know that you can double your business if every one of your clients simply referred one person? Need I say more about how important it is to focus on referrals? To gain referrals, you must first create loyal fans. Once you have fans, you can ask them to refer their friends, colleagues or family members to you! Currently, the challenge in most spas is that there is no system in place to ask for referrals. Gaining new referrals from clients is the least expensive method of marketing. Increase your number of referrals by doing the following: a. Train both the therapist and reception teams to ask for referrals. b. Start a contest among the teams to see who can generate the highest number of referrals for a certain period. c. Start a campaign to reward your clients for making referrals. d. Ask current clients to give you reviews and testimonials that lead to referrals. e. Most importantly, make it a habit to ask for referrals. March 2014 • Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa

2. Retention Retention is the key to growth. Attracting new prospects and turning them into frequent clients requires a lot of time, effort and investment. Retaining them makes a big difference in your profit and growth efforts. How can we ensure a high retention rate? You can start by discovering what your current retention rate is, and then set a new goal to improve it. To increase retention, you can implement the following: a. A guest comment card to gain feedback regarding the entire experience. b. Deliver consistent experiences. Have a set protocol for your team to follow with every guest. c. Reward high retention. Measure each person’s retention rate on your team, and offer a reward system for individuals who have a high retention rate. d. Implement a system to reserve their next treatment before they leave. e. Secret shopper. Assess your services by having a secret shopper visit your facility and report back to you on areas that need improvement.

It is more expensive to gain a new client than it is to keep a current client. Have you reached out to bring back guests that you have not seen in awhile? Try launching a Reactivation Campaign. Make a list of guests who have not visited your spa in awhile and invite them back. Reach out and find out why they have not been back. Host a “Let’s Reconnect” event. There are many strategies you can put in place to bring defectors back. a. Monitor the frequency of visits for each guest. b. Implement a flagging system within your software to identify the people who have not been back for more than two months. c. Send out a monthly ezine to maintain a relationship with your clients. d. Pick up the phone. Call your clients to check in with them. e. Send a postcard with an enticing offer inviting them back. Focus on the 3 Rs to ensure prosperity, and your business will grow naturally! n

THE FRONT DESK

A CLIENT’S FIRST IMPRESSION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT—

WHAT AREA OF YOUR BUSINESS HAS THE greatest impact on your growth? The answer is your reputation and your bottom line. A client’s first impression of your business is crucial for success. Everyone who calls or visits interacts with the front desk. This is where it all begins—or in some situations, ends. Think of the saying: “It takes 30 seconds to make a first impression.” Stop for a moment and reflect upon how you are greeted when you call your spa or walk through the door. Is this how you want a client to be treated? Has your team been trained to follow proper customer service protocols? The front desk handles an array of physical, psychological and emotional transactions on a daily basis. Conversations will transpire that you may never be aware of. These interactions are often instrumental in forming client perception. continues

business|the front desk The power of three Explain to your client what is important, and three key elements of your mission statement. HERE ARE SOME GUIDELINES TO CREATE A SCRIPT FOR YOUR NATURAL OR ORGANIC SPA: A simple mission statement provides your front desk staff with key information they need. This helps them answer client questions in an engaging way, and entices them to reserve an appointment. A mission statement should clearly state the company’s goals. When discussing product lines, always start with one that adheres to your mission statement. For example, if one of your unique selling points is that you carry products manufactured with a conscience, then do not lead with a product line manufactured with fillers. Now look at yourself in the mirror. Do you think your appearance reflects the company’s mission statement? Part of having a strong concept is to see the results reflected in your team. If the person delivering information is unclear about what your company represents, you may wish to align them with your company mission. The way people present themselves through appearance and voice is one of the most important aspects of initial impressions. These images have a lasting impact upon clients. It is better to try to avoid problems in the first place rather than try to fix them once they arise. When the front desk is properly trained, it removes the stress from a situation and creates a positive client interaction. By aligning your staff with the mission statement of the company, you allow your team to share the business’ story with passion. They will answer any questions as if they were delivered from your own voice. When we prepare and plan ahead, we allow magic to happen. The phone is ringing! Do you have confidence that your message will be delivered in the way you envision? n

1 2

HOW WOULD YOUR FRONT DESK HANDLE THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS? • Why should I choose an organic spa? • I heard that you are a holistic spa. How is that different from the other spas I have been to? • Your advertisement uses the term “all natural.” What does that mean?

How do we teach our team to handle all the different questions that may arise? Many of the questions clients ask you are universal, while others may catch you off guard. Your client’s first impression of your business may be flawed if you have not taken the time to prepare your team. Creating a script of your services for the front desk team is a common practice, but designing a script to handle unexpected questions can create distinction. Carefully written scripts can be impressive and loaded with pertinent information. The word “natural“ implies safety. Organic implies health. Arsenic is natural, however this does not mean it is safe or healthy. There are many compounds found in nature that are technically considered natural and organic, but may cause harm. So why is a natural spa a good choice? How is your front desk communicating your vision of a natural spa? A key element to successfully answering any question from a client is to lead with the power of three.

WHY IS A NATURAL SPA A GOOD CHOICE? HOW IS YOUR FRONT DESK COMMUNICATING YOUR VISION OF A NATURAL SPA?

Properly preparing a team through training and education is the most important investment a company can make. Training must include knowledge of the mission statement, treatments, time management, product lines, client services and supportive tasks.

UPGRADES AND REWARDS BENEFIT YOU AND YOUR CLIENTS

photo: Poznyakov/Shutterstock.com

DESPITE INDUSTRY TRENDS TOWARD INCREASED RETAILING, the sale of services remains the bread and butter of spas. Retailing is incredibly important to a salon or spa, and should account for 50 percent of revenue. However, businesses can also increase profits outside the treatment room, using rewards and upgrades. Many people in our industry refrain from up-selling. Why? Some are simply timid, and others are afraid of seeming “pushy.” But in the end, this is a business. It is important to be successful so that you can continue to do what you love. As an owner or manager, it is imperative for you to retrain your stylists and estheticians in the way they view sales. Up-selling does not have to be pushy. At the end of dinner at a fancy restaurant, the maître d’ displays the desserts. Why do you think he does this? The answer is to up-sell, while also satisfying his customers’ desires. As a spa professional, you need to understand that by up-selling, you are catering to your clients’ needs and enhancing their experience. No matter what size your business is, you should turn every inch of it into a profit machine. From the moment your client arrives, they should be treated with five star customer service. Greet clients with a warm hand towel and offer them refreshments. continues

Offer a quick service

UPGRADES AND REWARDS CHECKLIST 1. Offer a quick service 2. Create a loyalty program 3. Have an upgrade menu already in place 4. Reward frequent clients 5. Establish a point system

Establish a loyalty program You can also implement a loyalty program in your spa. For example, airline and credit card companies have minimum purchase requirements their customers must meet in order to receive benefits and special treatment. Every client wants to feel special, so creating a loyalty program will be an instant success. Your clients can sign up by purchasing a membership. In return, they can receive special discounts and benefits for being loyal customers. Most chain salons already have a program, so you should too if you want to remain competitive!

Create an upgrade menu Not ready to take the loyalty program leap? Have a menu of upgrades already in place. These can be existing treatments, but when added to an existing service, you offer them to your client at a promotional price. With an upgrade at the manicure station and another in the pedicure chair, you can double your average profit!

Reward frequent clients Make your clients want to buy more without “pressuring” them to do so. Encourage clients to purchase services in a series by offering them rewards. For example, book five deep pore cleansing treatments and receive the sixth one free! The more the client buys, the more discounts or free treatments they receive. This also means more booked appointments for you!

Establish a point system There are a number of ways you can promote your retail. For example, put a point system in place. Keep track of every time your client purchases a retail product, and when they reach a certain mark, offer a free item.

Incorporating this level of customer service into your salon can really go a long way. These simple gestures can tremendously enhance an experience. By offering your clients upgrades and rewards, you can make their experience more memorable and create loyal guests. n

By offering your clients upgrades and rewards, you can make their experience more memorable and create loyal guests.

If you find that you are running behind schedule and have clients piling up in your waiting room, offer them a quick and easy facial treatment. Sheet masks are a great way to keep your clients occupied and happy. They do not require a lot of prep work, and they will not waste your staff’s precious time. Simply apply the mask and remove. Your clients will be smiling and glowing from ear to ear. They will forget they were waiting at all!

CULTURE OF PRACTICALITY BY DAVID SUZUKI

WHETHER YOU LOOK AT THE VEHICLES, food or clothing in our society, it is easy to see that we are now a culture of practicality. This movement began after the recent changes in our economy. Practical living is more than a necessity. It is fashionable, smart and responsible. It is true that excess and glamour still exists and always will. However, it is no longer viewed by the mainstream as the most desired way to live. 4

the synergy of two generations The perception and evolution of professional skin care is equally as interesting. For many decades, skin care was viewed as a luxury service rather than a necessity. To an extent, this perception was well-earned. Skin care products were priced and marketed to appeal to the upper classes of our society. Traditional services and business models supported this structure. It was not unusual to only see two to four clients per day, with each service lasting as long as two hours.

Generational influence While the economy has been integral in shaping our culture and the world of skin care, the differences between our generations has also played a major role. The baby boomer generation, born between 1947 and 1964, has historically made up the largest group in the American population. They have dictated trend after trend due to their sheer mass of nearly 77 million. Since the youngest baby boomers are now in their 50s, our world is now focused on skin care, age management and healthy living. Coupled with the baby boomers are the millennials. This group, born between 1982 and 1995, has stolen the title as the largest generation in United States history at 80 million. Millennials are currently between the ages of 19 and 32. Many are the children of baby boomers and grew up under their influence. Seat belts, helmets, sun protection, organic food and skin care was the norm. Interestingly, baby boomers developed a much closer relationship with their children than they had with their own parents. Thus, skin care has quickly made the transition from being trendy to becoming an integral part of today’s lifestyle and culture.

Instant, cost effective results Millennials have significantly less financial power than the baby boomers. They rapidly follow trends with a quicker and more cost effective approach. While the old adage “time is money” is a factor in the quicker approach, the millennials as a whole are a rapid bunch. They want instant gratification.

March 2014 • Les Nouvelles Esthétiques & Spa

Dining out is a good example of this shift. The number of formal, high-end restaurants has greatly diminished over the last two decades, while the number of less expensive establishments and quick service restaurants has exploded.

Practical skin care In the world of skin care, we have seen our service and product offerings change dramatically. Millennials require innovation and quick results, therefore skin care has become largely technology driven. One group that is magnifying this trend is the baby boomers, who are now in the prime of their lives. They want to hold on to their youth and use natural, non-invasive methods to get results. Services that last 90 minutes are quickly disappearing from our menus. Why? Aren’t they enjoyable? Yes, but who has that much free time for a facial on a regular basis? Why would people pay upwards of $180 for a single service as opposed to four 30-minute mini-facials for the same price? If we really want to improve the appearance of our clients’ skin and well-being, seeing them repeatedly will achieve this objective much faster. This formula has changed the entire perception of skin care from one of exclusivity to a regular part of everyday life.

Technology driven skin care Non-invasive technology that works on a cellular level, such as microcurrent, LED, wet/dry microdermabrasion and oxygen infusion is always more effective in smaller doses at greater frequency. This is similar to how the body responds to exercise. Our results are much better if we work out three times per week for 30 minutes rather than one time per week for 90 minutes. In addition, it is a good idea to perform different routines each time we work out in order to balance out our conditioning. Skin care technology services use technology in a layered fashion. In our new culture, one of the most significant changes we must embrace is our role as skin therapists. While historical models of skin care focused on keeping methods a secret, today’s model encourages coaching and mentoring our clients, similar to the way a personal trainer counsels his clients on their fitness. The more we see our clients, the more information we can give them. Hence, they become more educated, and are better able to care for their skin. The end result is beautiful skin, satisfied clients and a booming business! n

spotlight on broccoli

by Gary Goldfaden, M.D.

YEARS OF DAILY EXPOSURE TO ultraviolet radiation from the sun takes a toll on skin. Sun-damaged skin becomes dry and rough, and dark spots and fine lines eventually begin to appear. Wrinkles deepen and skin loses its firmness and elasticity. Anyone who spent any part of their youth sunbathing may find that their skin looks years older than they feel. Scientific research has led to the discovery of natural compounds that can help support the structure of skin as well as minimize the signs of aging, such as crow’s feet, lines, sagging and uneven tone. Many of these natural compounds come from the foods we eat. Derma tological research increasingly focuses on the value of applying concentrated extracts of nutrient-rich foods to the skin. Green vegetables such as cabbage, kale and broccoli provide many internal health benefits. The key phytonutrients in these vegetables can visibly improve the health and appearance of skin. Concentrated extracts from cruciferous vegetables like broccoli contain bioactive phytonutrients that can help to reverse and repair a lifetime of skin damage. Broccoli has more vitamin C than any other vegetable of its kind. Broccoli extract offers outstanding protection from free radical assault. In addition, broccoli contains significant amounts of special flavonoids such as kaempferol and quercetin, which help recycle vitamin C, boosting its effectiveness. Broccoli also provides a number of important carotenoids like lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene, which also function as key antioxidants to help protect skin from the effects of premature aging. Studies revealed that a compound in broccoli called sulforaphane triggers the formation of protective proteins in skin cells. These cells continue to fight sun damage for several days. In fact, a recent study conducted at Johns Hopkins University showed that when applied before sun exposure, broccoli extract reduces subsequent redness by an average of 37 percent! n Gary Goldfaden, M.D. is a practicing dermatologist, lifetime member of The American Academy of Dermatology and creator of GOLDFADEN MD prod ucts. mantras

FOR HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Create powerful mantras for yourself. Mantras should be personal and have specific meaning to you. Take some time to think about what matters to you. Visualize what well-being and optimum health look and feel like.

What is a mantra? A mantra is a sound, word or phrase repeated by someone who is praying, meditating or expressing someone’s basic beliefs. Mantras originated in the late 18th century. They are the repetition of words and phrases of special significance, said either out loud or internally. All spiritual paths have some version of mantras. A few well known examples are the Gayatri mantra of Hinduism, Om Mani Padme Hum of Buddhism, the Jesus Prayer of Christianity and the Sufi dhikr of Islam.

How do mantras work? SOUND AND VIBRATIONS Many spiritual traditions say the universe began with a single word or sound from God. Mantras are a way of introducing and focusing the vibrational frequency of sound within ourselves.

Creating your own mantra Here is an example of a mantra. Sit with it, repeat it and let it resonate deep into your body, mind and emotions. Ahhhhhh ... With this sound mantra, focus on your heart chakra, located in the center of your chest. • I am enough • My light shines bright within me • I am healthy and well • I am love • My skin is vibrant and beautiful • My body is healthy and beautiful • I am beautiful • I am divine • I am love • I AM

Sound is a form of vibration. Everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency. Our own voice is one of our most healing elements. By repeating a mantra, we bring its vibrational frequency into ourselves. We then begin to resonate with the words and vibration of that mantra. When you allow yourself to resonate with the same vibrational frequency or intention of that mantra, it gains momentum. It is believed that mantras can transform us on a deep level, not only for healing but for health and well-being as well.

Benefits of mantra HEALING Many mantras are said to have healing properties. By connecting to the mantra on an energetic level, it may be possible to heal an affected or diseased area. Similarly, a mantra focused on the mind-body connection can influence healing by creating a biofeedback loop. This replaces unpleasant sensations with love and positivity. The subsequent reduction in stress and anxiety can produce profound physical benefits. When saying a healing mantra, you are accessing energy fields far greater than yourself.

Thoughts and emotions Most of us have experienced being caught up in repetitive thought patterns. This can be unpleasant and damaging to our self-esteem when these thoughts are negative. By replacing these types of thoughts with a mantra, we not only break the habitual negative

i am love flow, we also create and reinforce a new flow that is both beneficial and positive. Scientific studies on the neuroplasticity of the brain have proven that it is not necessary to investigate old negative thoughts, but rather replace them with a mantra. They showed that neural pathways are either strengthened by repetition or weakened by lack of use. So by replacing negative thoughts with a mantra, you

are literally rewiring your brain and weakening habitual negative thinking. Mantras are said to be purifying. By using a mantra we can connect and vibrate on a higher level of consciousness. Connect to the meaning of your mantra. This is very personal. Over time you may find that the way you experience your mantra changes. As it becomes part of you, you also become part of it. experiences that influence our behavior. By continually using mantras, we gain the power to change our normal reactions and tendencies (sanskaras). Many of us are familiar with “chakras” as being energetic centers in the body. Some mantras specifically target certain chakras. They aim to cleanse, open and purify these chakras so our spiritual energies flow more smoothly and without obstruction.

How to use mantras 1. Clear your mind and center yourself. Take a few deep breaths. It is easy to get distracted while saying your mantra. Having a clear mind helps with concentration and awareness. 2. Set your intention. Remind yourself why you are using that mantra. Be clear to yourself.

3. Start saying your mantra, either out loud or internally. Many people find it useful to coordinate the mantra with their breath. Experiment with this to see what works for you. 4. Connect to the meaning of your mantra. This is very personal. Over time you may find that the way you experience your mantra changes. As it becomes part of you, you also become part of it. 5. Depending on the type of mantra, you may wish to place your focus on your heart or between your eyebrows while you say the mantra. If the mantra is for something specific, such as healing or a certain chakra, place your awareness on that part of your body. You can also visualize the color associated with that chakra.

Jin Shin Jyutsu

finding balance within

JIN SHIN JYUTSU IS THE ART OF HAPPIness, longevity and compassion. It awakens our awareness of the fact that all we need to live a successful life is to find balance—physically, mentally and emotionally. The power to help ourselves lies within our own hands. Jin Shin Jyutsu can be practiced anywhere and at any time. The next time you are having a difficult day at work, simply use this method to regain your balance.

6. Energy moves down and up the front of the body. This movement creates balance and harmonizes the body’s energy levels. 7. There are 26 sites on the body called “safety energy locks.” They act as circuits to protect the body when the flow of life energy is blocked. 8. Within each of us is an underlying harmony that is always present. If we suffer from an illness (disharmony), this is called a “label.”

Foundation of concepts

Breathing to find harmony

1. Life energy circulates throughout the universe and within each individual organism. 2. The universal life energy manifests itself in different levels of intensity. This is referred to as its “depths.” 3. Breathing is the basic concept of life energy. It enables us to unblock stress and energy via exhalation. 4. Obstructions lead to physical, mental and emotional disharmony called “attitudes.” 5. Energy moves through the body in different ways. This is called its “flow.”

Breathing is the best tool we have at our disposal. It can be used anytime to balance life energy and healing flow. To achieve harmony, the first step is to remove all blockages in the life energy by breathing. When you exhale, you feel the tension drain from your shoulders, torso and pelvis all the way through your toes. You become more relaxed and aware of yourself. In order to release the tension in your body, you must take 36 breaths. Make sure to count continues

WHEN USING YOUR HANDS AS A SOURCE OF ENERGY, KEEP THE FOLLOWING POINTS IN MIND. • Relax, just be yourself. • Choose whatever position is most comfortable for you (sitting, standing, etc.). • Hold each position for a few minutes or until you feel a relaxing sensation. • For best results, complete this sequence daily. Each of our fingers is responsible for harmonizing a depth of our being. These depths help us control our fears or sad feelings and are the primary sources of energy disharmony. Each depth is responsible for a specific set of functions within the body, mind and spirit. Depths are described as the process of energy taking form.

kindness ON MIND AND BODY

Kindness is not about being “soft” or a pushover. Kindness comes from understanding, especially self-understanding. IN AYURVEDA, the mind and emotions have a strong impact on health and overall wellness. Mind precedes body. What we think and feel sets many things in motion, including our dietary choices, how we move, our ability to play and the quality of our sleep. When we are depressed, we often think about eating something sweet such as a piece of cake to alleviate our feelings. Thus, our depression becomes physical, making our bodies feel slow and possibly more relaxed—at least for a time. However, if we are angry, we do not crave sweets. We want something greasy and crunchy. Maybe some French fries or something hot and spicy (as if to mimic our mood). We may also act in a tensed up, jerky kind of manner. Our sleep is restless. However, do not focus on the negative. It is a good idea to identify these issues, but it is more important to cultivate positive states of mind in our lives.

For spa directors “The customer always comes first.” Get over this misconception. Manage ment should always put their employees first. Top corporations know this. Treat your employees well and they will shine for your clients. Joy and the feeling of cooperation within business relationships is the most important factor in employee retention.

For employees When you begin your day—or anytime you have a moment to breathe, try this simple technique: Before a guest arrives, stand somewhere quietly, such as a break room or treatment room. Rest the palm of your right hand just below your navel, the “svadhisthana or sacral chakra,” and your left palm over the center of your forehead, “the ajna or third-eye chakra.” Breathe in a quiet and relaxed manner. This exercise settles your mind and strengthens your aura. It is performing an act of selfkindness. By taking care of yourself in this manner, you also give your client a deeper quality of gentleness.

Kindness principles The Dalai Lama says kindness is his religion. After analyzing his mind, he concluded that religion is about aligning ourselves with a positive code of conduct. Kindness is a great religion to adopt. Kindness is not about being “soft” or a pushover. Kindness comes from understanding, especially self-understanding. If we are developing mindfulness through some form of meditative process, our internal frustration disappears. We begin to show ourselves some mercy. Mercy is an act of kindness toward ourselves. continues

As we start being kinder to ourselves, we begin to forgive others as well. We all want happiness. However, we tend to get distracted with things that do not help us achieve happiness. With this awareness, we create a space of non-reactivity to whatever is coming toward us. Creating this space allows internal aggravation to subside. Since we are not responding to the negative mood or banter of others, we are showing them kindness.

Kindness in the spa People visit the spa to release stress and tension. Showing them kindness immediately starts the process of dissolving these negative emotions. CHAKRA MEDITATION refresh, restore and reboot your focus

EVERYONE NEEDS A BREAK TO CLEAR their mind and get the blood flowing to their brain. Practicing yoga or cardiovascular exercise before or after work is one way to accomplish this. Walking outdoors in the sunshine is another solution, as it is a source of vitamin D. This natural mood lifter helps combat stress and anxiety. Alternatively, you can take a 15-minute meditation break and complete a few stretches at lunchtime. You will return to work re-energized, ready to give clients your very best. Chakra clearing meditation is essential for personal health, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing. With this type of meditation, the chakras are identified by the effect they have on you. For example, you may be carrying around negative energy. Chakra clearing meditation can help clear your senses and rejuvenate inner light. In daily life we pick up energy from other people. This is especially true for those in beautycentered industries, such as skin care and spa professionals. Chakra clearing meditation is designed

to help you “own” your space. Meditation is an important aspect of self care. It is free and can replenish you in the midst of a hard day’s work.

Grounding cord set-up • Sit comfortably in a chair, feet flat on the floor, hands resting in your lap. Imagine that you have little roots spreading from the bottoms of your feet, all the way down into the center of the earth. • Now you are ready to create your grounding cord.

CHAKRA CLEARING MEDITATION IS ESSENTIAL FOR PERSONAL HEALTH, MENTAL, SPIRITUAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING.

Create your grounding cord • Think of a grounding cord like an anchor to a ship. • There is some weight to the anchor that keeps the ship grounded and prevents it from going adrift. • Decorate it according to your personal taste. continues

The golden sun • Imagine a golden sun six to eight inches above your head. This golden sun represents your original essence and direct connection to the source. • Call all aspects of your life into the golden sun. For instance, if you are thinking about the future, call this in. If a part of you is still at work, call that back in. If there is any aspect of you that is off and busy thinking about the future or the past, call that back in as well. • Feel the ball of light pulse with your energy.

• Put a beautiful rose with full petals in the center of the room. It can be any color. The stem of the rose becomes its own grounding cord to the center of the earth. From the four corners of the ceiling and the four corners of the floor, imagine silver threads anchoring the rose to the center of the room. • As you release baggage from your chakras, the rose will absorb whatever gets released. • Hold the golden sun on top of your head. Feel the golden light fill up your center of knowingness and certainty. • In your mind, say these words: “I claim 100 percent of my knowingness and certainty.” • Allow anything that is released to move into the rose. • Let the golden light fill the center of your head, your sixth chakra, with certainty. • Let the golden light radiate through all the cells of your brain. • Say the words, “I claim 100 percent of my certainty and inner vision!” • Now drop the golden ball of light into your throat, filling up your inner voice with your true essence. Release any unexpressed thoughts into the rose. • Say the words, “I claim 100 percent of my inner voice!” • Feel the golden light radiating everywhere in your body. • Take a deep breath and say, “I claim 100 percent affinity for me!”

• Now drop the golden ball into your solar plexus or inner core. • Let the ball of light circulate inside your core. Find out how good the soul feels when you give yourself permission to be exactly who you are. • Say the words, “I claim 100 percent permission to be exactly who I am!” • The golden ball of light is now circulating throughout your body. • Now drop the golden light into your belly. This is the chakra that governs our ability to have. Feel your belly fill up with this radiant golden light and circulate throughout the organs in your belly. Some of the energy you are releasing can also be released through your grounding cord into the center of the earth. • Say the words, ”I claim 100 percent of my havingness!” • Now, drop the golden sun all the way down into your first chakra or lower pelvis. This is the center of your personal power, the location of Kundalini, your internal fire. • Allow any energy that is not yours to be released through your grounding cord as you say the words, “I claim 100 percent of my personal power!” • Feel the light circulate through your pelvis. Let it flow all the way down into your legs, calves, feet and root chakras to the center of the earth. • You are now a vessel of golden light. • Every cell in your body is pulsating and communicating perfectly with this radiant light.

Return to the rose Visualize the petals of the rose encasing all the energy you have released. Allow the rose to gently float out of the room and dissolve into particles that disappear.

A THERAPEUTIC SPA EXPERIENCE Energy clearing 101

photo: Igor Dutina/Shutterstock.com

A few years ago, I had a profound energy experience that made a lasting impression. I went to a spa owned by one of my Reiki students for a treatment. She had transformed her space into a virtual nature experience. Her treatment room wall showed videos of nature scenes, while relaxing music filled the air. I was completely engaged … until I laid down on the facial bed. All of a sudden, I was overcome by a sense of dread. The same sentence kept popping into my head: “You have succumbed to cancer.” I thought, “What? Are you talking to me?” I had never heard or felt anything like this before. Yet, those words and a feeling of resignation continued to haunt me. I could not relax and enjoy the treatment. After the service, I asked my student who her last client was. She told me it was a client who had just discovered she has cancer. A-ha! I realized that I had experienced the energy “residue” from her previous client. The imprint of her suffering and resignation to the disease was still in the room … and this was two weeks after she had been there. This experience validated to me the importance of clearing energy between clients.

Singing bowls, tuning forks and chimes all work well to clear energy. They are methods of vibrational medicine that heal and transform. Ring your instrument of choice as you move throughout the room. Let the sound reverberate as it clears the energy. Don’t forget to include the corners. These instruments may also be used during treatments.

Crystals Quartz crystals and colorful gemstones emanate energy based on their color and composition. Rinse your gemstones first under running water for 30 to 60 seconds to clear the energy. Then place them throughout the room, including under the facial bed.

Chakras are part of our subtle energy body, which fuels and surrounds our physical body in what is known as the “aura.” Our aura gives people a sense of who we are before we even say a word. It is the force that connects us to one another energetically. Now imagine that bits and pieces of this energy are left behind by everyone who enters a space. Negative or unbalanced energy contributes to stress, anxiety, mental chatter, depression and exhaustion. energy clearing solutions Essential oils The volatile oils from certain plants make great energy clearing sprays. Sage has been used by Native Americans to clear energy, primarily by burning the bundled herb. They knew that the energy of sage helps to ground, heal and clear negativity. Make your own sage clearing mist and avoid smoking up your room (see sidebar). Shake the mixture and spray throughout the entire room from corner to corner, as well as over the facial bed. Other excellent essential oils to use are frankincense, sandalwood and eucalyptus.

Reiki is a Japanese technique to reduce stress and promote healing. It is based on the idea that unseen “life force energy” flows through us and gives us life. The exchange of energy can be transmitted hands-on or at a distance. If you have been trained and attuned into Reiki level 2, you may use your Reiki level 2 symbol throughout the room to clear energy instantly. You may also use Reiki attuned sprays that contain one or more of the essential oils listed above. When clearing energy, remember what our relationship is with nature. We are not separate from nature, we are nature. Use the beauty of nature to lift the energy in your space. Create an environment for protection and a healing spa experience. n

feel springy. Lela Rose used a mix of greens on her models, with pink lips and cheeks.

Glowing skin Make your clients’ skin glow. After all, that is why they came to see you. Designer Philip Lim’s models’ skin radiated under the runway lights. enhance client manicures with a “pop” of color SPRING IS RAPIDLY APPROACHING, however it is still too soon for full-on pastels. Try lightening up your clients’ manicures by doing a brighter accent nail. This acknowledges the anticipation of warmer weather without jumping ahead. Purples are always hip no matter what time of year it is. Encourage your clientele to try this grapelicious hue, even if they say purple is not their color. With so many different shades available, there is a perfect tone for everybody.

HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO CREATE THIS LOOK: 1. Two shades of polish that contrast well together 2. Striping tape 3. Topcoat STEP 1 • Decide which colors will be used as the primary and the accent. Polish four nails with the main color and paint the accent color on the ring finger.

STEP 2 • After applying two coats of color and allowing them to dry, add one coat of topcoat. STEP 3 • Make sure the topcoat is completely dry before moving on to the next step. STEP 4 • Place pieces of striping tape where you want the base color to show through. • Once the tape is on the nail, paint over the entire nail with the accent color. • While the polish is still wet, slowly remove the striping tape. Remove one strip at a time, pulling from the end in a slow, smooth motion. • Striping tape must be removed while polish is still wet. If the tape is pulled after the polish is dry, it will remove a portion of the color that you want on the nail. Step 5 • Once nails are completely dry, finish up with another application of topcoat. Doing an accent nail is an easy way

to spruce up the traditional manicure. By building your creative skill set, you can offer your clients customized options that are both fun and trendy. Have you ever considered switching to polishes that are formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene and DBP free? Natural products are very popular right now, and many clients would love to lessen the amount of chemicals used in their beauty routine. While pure acetone is needed for the removal of gel polishes or acrylics, your clients may appreciate the use of non-acetone polish removers with regular manicures. As an added bonus, companies making the effort to be more natural also tend to be cruelty-free and do not test on animals. With an eye for trendy color combinations and some striping tape, there is no limit to the design possibilities! n

BY LAKE LOUISE

RAIN OR SHINE, CLEAR OR SMOGGY, our bodies are profoundly affected by the rhythms and cycles of seasonal changes. As we metaphorically awaken from the slumber and hibernation of winter, we often realize that we have put on a few extra pounds. Spring arrives, and after months of overindulging in heavy comfort foods, our clothes are fitting tighter, our anxiety is high and our energy levels are low. This prompts us into a desperate search for a way to drop weight instantly. Out of sheer panic, many opt for a trendy, over-the-counter liver or detoxification cleanse. In my experience, this has only caused me to abandon the mission halfway through or binge immediately afterward. The danger of sudden or drastic shifts in diet is that they can actually do more harm than good. As trapped toxins are released from the fat stores, they stream into our blood, and can cause nausea and headaches. For this reason, moderation and frequency are key components to success. continues

Snack: 2 apples OR 1 cup of celery and carrot sticks with 2 tablespoons of hummus. Dinner: 1 cup of steamed beets with brown rice, 1 cup of steamed kale, chard, collard greens or spinach. Before bed: Drink 1 cup of hot lemon water. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Begin and end the day with 1 teaspoon of psyllium powder mixed with 10 oz water. This assists the elimination process. Detoxifying the body targets the liver (where toxins and mood-altering hormones can build up) and the colon (which holds waste). It is very common to experience an increase in energy and improved digestion, both of which lead to healthier skin and a greater ability to focus. Regularly doing a seasonal cleanse can help you follow a lifetime of healthier eating. Mark your calendar this spring and make a commitment to prepare your body for the new season. n

Now for the good news: The spring season brings lighter, crisper foods, which helps the body cleanse itself and shed the unwanted winter excess. However, it will not happen overnight. The spring season symbolizes rebirth, life, growth and purity. We should give our bodies the time and attention they deserve at this time of year, because when the seasons change, we change. Seasonal spring foods offer exactly what the body needs for this season: fruits, sprouts and greens. Fruits with high water content hydrate the body, flush out the winter load and provide sugars as an energy source. Fresh, healthy greens and sprouts are high in vitamins and minerals, aid digestive function and are helpful in the weight loss process. They should be included in your diet on a daily basis.

Simple is better. Although the body naturally cleanses itself and eliminates waste through the skin, kidneys, respiratory system and gastrointestinal track, our bodies are bombarded with more artificial stimulants, pollution and chemicals than it is able to handle. These toxins accumulate. A moderate plan releases toxins at a slower rate. Any extensive or extreme detoxification program should be done under a doctor’s supervision. Challenge yourself to a three-day do-it-yourself cleanse. This simplified detox is a great way to refocus and recommit to the goals and resolutions that you made at the beginning of the year. A week prior to cleansing, gradually reduce your intake of sugar and artificial sweeteners, white flour, dairy, alcohol, salt and caffeine, while increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. This prepares you for the change, both mentally and physically.
