Spotlight on

UBIQUINOL by CHRISTIANE WALDRON

I

n 2007, I was sent on a super secret mission to Japan. My mission as a

chemical engineer was to figure out how to make Ubiquinol, the super strong, bioavailable form of Coenzyme Q10. Though Coenzyme Q10, also called Ubiquinone, is a well known antioxidant naturally produced in the body, its almost identical twin Ubiquinol (different in only two electrons) is a relatively new breakthrough with potent effects in anti-aging skin care. Originating from the word ubiquitous, meaning present almost everywhere, Ubiquinone, or Coenzyme Q10, is in fact found in 95 percent of our cells. Though the name may sound a bit “chemical,” this substance is made from a natural bio-fermentation process and is a naturally occurring ingredient in many foods and fish. Our

“significant reduction in oxidation in vivo”. They also found the antioxidant to be “highly effective in protecting keratinocytes from DNA damage induced by UVA” and potent at reducing photoaging with a “reduction in wrinkle depth and a decrease in the turnover time of the epithelium.”2 No one ingredient produces miracles. In any anti-aging product, you need a balance of emollients, humectants, peptides, antioxidants and other ingredients to keep skin looking good. Sunscreen, for example, plays an essential part in reducing photoaging. It’s important for the esthetician to recommend formulas that incorporate strong antioxidants that reduce free radical attacks and help prevent aging.

Where to Find it Coenzyme Q10 has been around for ages in skin care formulas and is a widely available supplement for wellness practitioners. However, Ubiquinol in skin care is very new and still relatively unknown. It has been commercially available since 2010 and proudly made only in the United States. Ubiquinol can be found in the vitamin aisle and in key anti-aging skin care lines. When looking for Ubiquinol, look also for several other antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic, thioctic and others that accompany it in the formula. These substances make the compound much more effective. Ubiquinol has garnered serious respect from the scientific community and has many

ithout the right nutrition, the skin boosting benefits of skin care products and spa services are limited. Proper nourishment and vitamins play a vital role in skin health, enabling topically applied treatments to achieve their purpose. We can administer the proper products and still not see results in our clients’ skin if they are not eating right because the metabolic process is directly responsible for adequately processing and absorbing nutrients, not only in the bloodstream but on an intracellular level as well. Vitamins are supplemental to that nourishment, and when we don’t get sufficient amounts of nourishment from our diet, our skin’s health can suffer.

THE A-Es OF SKIN CARE

A high percentage of skin problems and conditions are related to nutritional deficiencies. These can be determined by a professional profile and assessment evaluation to bring your client’s skin to a healthier stage. It’s important to note the quality and classification of any vitamin supplements and dietary enhancement you recommend to a client, keeping in mind a nutrient’s source, how it’s made and recommended daily dosage.

Note: Pregnant and nursing women should consult a doctor about recommended dosages as they may require more nutrients.

Vitamin A Benefits: Repairs the epithelial tissue of the skin, slows the aging process, eliminates wrinkles and neutralizes free radicals. Treats acne, age spots, hyperpigmentation and blotchy skin resulting from slight discolorations in the pigment. Suggested Daily Dose: 700 mcg for women, 900 mcg for men, 770 mcg. for pregnant women, and 1,300 mcg. for lactating women.

Vitamin B Complex Vitamin B complex supplements are a combination of all the B vitamins, giving your client multiple benefits of each vitamin in one dose. Benefits: Promotes healthy hair, skin and nails, treats dry skin, dermatitis, acne, rashes, hair loss and weak nails. Counteracts free radical damage.

3. Niacin (B3): Turkey, salmon, legumes, whole wheat WOMEN: 14 MG., MEN: 16 MG.

4. Pantothenic acid (B5): Mushrooms, sweet potato, all bran cereal, liver, yeast WOMEN AND MEN: 5 MG.

Suggested Daily Dose: Requirements for B complex vary considerably, from 3 mcg. for B12 to 16 mg. for B3. See below for more details.

5. Vitamin B6: Chickpeas, beef liver, tuna, salmon, chicken breast, fortified cereals WOMEN AND MEN: 1.3 MG.

Signs of Deficiency: Visible symptoms of vitamin A deficiency include dry or bumpy skin and hair loss.

Signs of Deficiency: Signs of a deficiency vary depending on which type of vitamin B is lacking. Skin rashes are one visible effect.

6. Biotin (B7): Liver, egg yolks, chocolate, legumes, milk

Top Sources: Sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale.

Top Sources: B complex can be taken as vitamin supplements or injections.

8. Folate (B9): Beef liver, spinach, peas, fortified cereals, white rice

Contraindications: Taking large amounts of vitamin A can be toxic to the body, particularly the liver. Vitamin A toxicity can cause chronic reactions such as hair loss, oily skin and hair, itchy or peeling skin, cracked fingernails and jaundice, among others. When taken with retinoids, vitamin A can have an adverse effect on vitamin levels, leading to toxicity.

Natural food sources include:

THE A-Es OF SKIN CARE

Vitamin C Benefits: One of the most important vitamins for skin health, this powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent works to brighten skin and prevent enzymes from creating excessive amounts of melanin, which can cause dark splotches. Treats acne, hyperpigmentation, psoriasis, rosacea, signs of aging and asphyxiated skin. Suggested Daily Dose: Women: 75 mg., men: 90 mg. Signs of Deficiency: Visible symptoms of deficiency include infections and improper wound healing. Top Sources: Citrus fruits, red and green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, baked potatoes Contraindications: Too much vitamin C can produce harmful ferrous iron, which may damage the heart and other organs. Though studies have been controversial, vitamin C supplements have the potential to be unsafe when used during chemotherapy and radiation. Clients with cancer should consult their oncologist prior to taking supplements.

Vitamin D There are five forms of vitamin D, together known as calciferol. The most important to the body and skin, vitamin D3, is made in reaction with ultraviolet light. We require 10-15 minutes of sun exposure at least twice a week on the face, arms and back without sunscreen for adequate amounts of vitamin D3 synthesis. Benefits: Vitamin D has properties of both a hormone and a vitamin. It slows signs of aging and treats skin conditions such as psoriasis.

Suggested Daily Dose: Women and men: 15-20 mcg. *Medications such as anti-inflammatory steroids, orlistat and cholestyramine can impair levels of vitamin D. Signs of Deficiency: A visible sign of vitamin D deficiency is frequent infections. Top Sources: The body produces vitamin D naturally through direct exposure to sunlight. Additionally, top food sources include cod liver oil, the flesh of fatty fish such as salmon, beef liver, cheese and egg yolks. Contraindications: Too much vitamin D can cause an abnormally high blood calcium level, resulting in nausea, constipation, confusion, abnormal heart rhythm and even kidney stones.

It’s important to note the quality and classification of any vitamin supplements and dietary enhancement you recommend to a client.

THE A-Es OF SKIN CARE

Vitamin E Benefits: This powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent defends the skin against free radicals. Can be used to prevent signs of aging and inflammatory conditions such as acne, rosacea and psoriasis. Suggested Daily Dose: Women and men: 15 mg. Signs of Deficiency: Signs of deficiency on the skin include dryness and poor wound healing. Top Sources: Nuts, seeds, vegetable oils, leafy greens, fortified cereals Contraindications: Too much vitamin E from supplements can lead to excessive bleeding or hemorrhaging. However, foods high in vitamin E are considered safe and healthy. Taking large doses of vitamin E along with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, such as warfarin, can increase the risk of bleeding. Taking it with other antioxidants such as vitamin C and selenium, along with medications like simvastatin and niacin can raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. Vitamin E and other antioxidant supplements are not recommended during chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments because they might reduce the effectiveness of these therapies.

Benefits: Excellent for all inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and rosacea. Also treats hyper keratinization of sebaceous follicles. Suggested Daily Dose: Women and men: 500 mg. *Too much omega-3 can increase the risk of bleeding even in people without a history of bleeding disorders. Signs of Deficiency: A visible symptom of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency is dry skin. Sulfur Benefits: Sulfur is instrumental in collagen synthesis. Sulfur baths and topical application may help treat acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, dandruff and warts. Suggested Daily Dose: Because most people get all the sulfur they need from their diet, there is no recommended dietary allowance for sulfur. Daily intake is usually 800-900 mg., and conditions such as arthritis and liver disorders can be improved by increasing intake to 1,500 mg.

Top Sources: Eggs, meat, poultry, fish, legumes Contraindications: Certain sulfur supplements have the potential for side effects such as headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation.

Paying special attention to eco-chic brands that emphasize wellness, Matti chose companies to attract millenials. “A lot of millenials want to participate in eco-friendly initiatives,” she shares. “They might not actively recycle, but they want to support brands that do.”

Help couples connect deeper this Valentine’s Day by CAROLINE

CANETTI

Your clients probably still enjoy a Valentine’s Day package with a romantic side-byside couples massage, champagne and a rose. It’s a classic, and for good reason. But consider kicking up creativity a bit for this sweetheart’s holiday and offer your lovebirds something that can strengthen their relationship beyond skin deep.

SPA IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Open Their Hearts with Couples’ Chakra Balancing One way to bring couples together in a deeper way is through their chakras, or points of spiritual power in the body. Elixir Mind Body Massage in Denver, Colo., offers a Chakras Couples Massage (60 minutes, $199), which provides both physical and mental relaxation while supporting a positive energetic connection. They use very specific essential oil blends and crystals associated with the heart, throat and sacral chakras for this massage. For example, the heart chakra (chakra 4) relates to the giving and receiving of love and the expression of feelings, so they use lemon, bergamot, orange, sandalwood, and geranium.“ This provides a sense of joy and happiness, relaxes the body, lifts mood and has uplifting effects that aid with depression, anxiety and anger,” says Elixir Mind Body Massage founder Sandy Stroehmann. “And we use the rose quartz crystal — the love stone — here because it helps open the heart to true love and friendship and the essential oil blend is relaxing and brings a sense of joy and happiness.” For the throat chakra (chakra 5), which relates to the power of communication, Stroehmann explains that they use bergamot, cypress, spearmint and peppermint because it cleanses the respiratory system and increases confidence, which helps with communication issues. incorporated because it’s a crystal of peace that stimulates intuitive communication, and the essential oil blend increases confidence. The sacral chakra (chakra 2) relates to sexuality, emotional balance, procreation and relationships. The citrine crystal is used because it’s the stone for abundance and raises selfesteem. The essential oil blend for this is orange, sandalwood, bergamot, and clary sage. “It’s a mild aphrodisiac and boosts libido, brings a feeling of joy and happiness, and stimulates confidence, hope, and mental strength,” Stroehmann says. “By combining energy work, aromatherapy, crystals and massage all based around these three important chakras for a good relationship, we

The class is divided into two sections so that each participant has an opportunity to both give and receive. In each section the massage therapist demonstrates and explains three to five different strokes and then supervises while one person practices on the other, and then they switch. They also teach them about what types of oil and lotions are best suited and how to apply them. “During the practice time, couples are also coached on how they can communicate their needs to each other in kind ways. For example, it is very different to say, ‘I would prefer more pressure’ instead of, ‘You are not doing it right,’” says spa manager Tiahna Skye. The experience is great for the mind, body and heart of the relationship. “Massage is a wonderful way to bring people closer,” says Skye. “The idea sprung from the infinite times I heard guests say, ‘I wish my husband/

felt we could create a unique couples therapy that would not only feel amazing but could also strengthen their connection,” she adds.

Connecting Through Touch Spa Brasada at Brasada Ranch in Powell Butte, Ore., helps couples take relaxation into their own hands — literally — with a Couples Massage Lesson (60 minutes, $149, 90 minutes, $199). from Monday through Wednesday and $1,310 Thursday through Sunday, while the four-hour treatment is $1,705 Monday through Wednesday and $1,760 Thursday through Sunday. The centerpiece of this escape is the Time Rituals (lasting two or three hours, depending on the package the couple chooses), which is comprised of several customized harmonizing stages, such as purification, balance, nourish and bliss. “It starts with a welcome ritual, which is a foot bath,” says spa director Gaylen Brown. “That tradition dates back to our Oriental heritage as a way to clean your feet, clean your soul, and get you prepared to start treatments. Then it goes into the section of the Time Ritual that we refer to as ‘purify,’ which includes a full body exfoliation. Then we move into ‘balance,’ which is

our tailored, full-body massage with essential oils that are based on the traditional Chinese elements. After the massage, we go into the ‘nourish’ component, which is a facial cleanse and facial massage with serum best suited for the client’s skin. We end the time ritual with the component we call ‘bliss,’ which is a hair and scalp massage.” The five elements Bento meal is served at the end of the escape. It is based on the five elements in traditional Chinese medicine (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water), with five components of the Bento box including wonton soup, seaweed salad, vegetable dim sum, three choices for the entree that change seasonally, and a light dessert. “It’s a really unique experience for our guests and a great way for couples to spend some meaningful time together,” she adds.

LNE & SPA CHAT With Ellen Delaney

A New Spirit Aesthetics, Oswego, N.Y.

How can you define the concept of your spa? The concept of my spa is providing serious skin care in a relaxing, professional and sanitary environment. I provide skin care that takes it to the next level such as laser treatments and peels, but our beautiful location in a historic 1850s mansion makes the client feel like they are walking into a spa and not a medical office.

How many treatment rooms and other amenities are there? I am a solo esthetician and work with several independent contractors. Together we use three treatment rooms for esthetics and skin care, massage, hair and nails. There’s also an additional room for Bikram Yoga classes.

46

|

JANUARY 2016

|

LNeonline.com

How many employees do you have and what are their specialties? I work with two other state-licensed independent contractors. I specialize in facials and skin care and we have a massage therapist and hair and nails specialist.

What daily challenges do you encounter in your position? When you’re a solo practitioner, you’re wearing all the hats: owner, esthetician, bookkeeper, receptionist, housekeeper, etc. You’re picking up a lot of pieces of your business throughout the day and that can be challenging.

What would you say are your biggest challenges? My biggest challenge is marketing. I went to the marketing conference at The International Congress of Esthetics and Spa in Philadelphia to get inspiration from the professionals who do it all the time. Marketing is such an important part of what we do to get our name out there, so I’m moving to a cloud-based application for scheduling, newsletters and social media.

How do you manage stress that work brings into your life? I remain calm, sort out the issues and then proceed proactively. I also love the outdoors, so my husband and I take to the woods

with our dog, Bossy. We live in New York where it’s snowing outside right now, so we go cross-country skiing—whatever it takes to get outside. It helps us all!

What takes most of your time every day? Keeping the schedule together and communication with clients. As a solo practitioner I have no receptionist so an electronic program will help me avoid phone tag with clients.

How do you select the people that are going to be working with you? When we are considering a new contractor, we all meet the person first and implement a 60-day trial period to make sure we work well together. We like to keep a low-key environment, so we meet periodically to resolve issues and make sure everybody has what they need.

How do you evaluate your contractors? What makes one stand out as a star? We like to bundle our separate services in packages, which means more business for us and savings for clients, so we really want team players who are willing to work together. We want to avoid drama and foster a relaxed place for us and our clients.

What are your retail goals? My retails goals are to keep stock in place so I never have to tell a client I don’t have their product.

I use a program to analyze product inventory to show what are the max and min sellers. I also offer commission or a discount if my counterparts sell products in talking to clients.

Where is the retail area located and what is its surface area compared to the rest of the spa? Why? My retail area is a small display case adjacent to the front desk in the waiting room. I like to keep it where it’s highly visible and display a seasonal Product of the Month at the front desk to spark interest and keep clients aware of new products.

What can you tell us about your marketing techniques? What do you focus on, where do you spend the most money, and why? I have used several marketing strategies including radio, TV, newspaper and Groupon. Our local college also has a yearly planner they provide to students and they carry that planner with them all the time. We advertise there and offer a student discount.

How do you keep clients/ patients loyal? I like to offer packages to save the client money. I also have a Facial Club which allows them a free treatment: after five facials the sixth is free. That really seems to connect with people.

What are the most important lessons you have learned from failures or challenges that you can share with others in your career path? My mom had a year of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, it was an emotional time. What you have to remember is to leave your emotions at the door and keep your workspace a sanctuary for clients to relax and enjoy. We all have daily struggles, but in this business you really have to remove the negative and keep it a great space!

treatment, they typically want to book it again and again and I’ve found they don’t mind paying a little extra for it.

What advice could you give someone who would like to manage a spa? If you want to manage a spa, you have to complete your interview process to ensure you have a cohesive staff with the same goals in place. Ensure you’re consistent in training and scheduling, and that the spa is a pleasant, inviting place that clients gravitate to.

What are the most popular treatments? I am certified in an advanced facial massage promoting circulation. Once my clients experience that LNEonline.com

Wow

Your Clients Make them feel like vips A recent study by eMarketer estimates that the average adult spends more than five hours per day on non-voice mobile activities including smartphones and tablets. This high-tech, isolating environment has resulted in a greater need for spa services as people seek out the personal contact lacking in their daily lives. For me, the most gratifying aspects of being an esthetician are the emotional, spiritual and physical therapeutic benefits. The simple act of tactile contact through massage can lift depression, strengthen the immune system, improve sleep patterns and decrease stress. As estheticians, we possess the training and certification that enables us to make a difference in people’s lives.

WOW YOUR CLIENTS

With such a need in our society for real, positive experiences, spas should be booked solid for face and body care treatments. Yet, this may not be the case. If your business is falling short of this, something is missing from the formula. Success must begin with the service provider and how they are caring for the client. Your clients are like celebrities and must be treated to superlative service accordingly.

— Cater to the

VIP in Everyone Every client wants to feel important and have a wonderful experience. A study by Yankelovich found that 94 percent of consumers who make less than $35,000 annually believe they should enjoy the same quality service as more affluent consumers, and 88 percent expect to be treated in the same manner as a business’ best client. These statistics show that consumers anticipate receiving high-end service at all times, whether eating at a neighborhood diner or a fine restaurant, or visiting a destination spa or a one-room, family-owned facility. Review your spa’s menu to see if it speaks to these expectations.

— Have Them

from Hello While online booking is becoming more popular, the inability to reach a human who can answer questions often results in frustrated clients and lost business. Providing a phone line with a properly trained associate is so important. All spa employees should display the utmost manners, such as addressing clients by their surname. When a letter or email comes to me addressed “Hey Lydia,” I find it offensive and arrogant. Refer to clients as “Ms. Smith” rather than “Jane” until a relationship between the client and the spa has been established or until the client suggests 50

otherwise. Leaving good impressions with your clients builds loyalty; impeccable manners leave lasting goodwill.

— A REAL-LY GOOD

FIRST IMPRESSION The first seven seconds of a potential client’s encounter with your spa is critical. Your identity is conveyed through sight, sound, touch, smell and taste. It is the details that impress your clientele, add value to your business and convey a welcoming attitude that says you are happy to see them. Establish eye contact and smile genu

Keep your spa’s décor organized and inviting, presenting an impression of luxury, wellness and and pampering. Offer wine or champagne and play classical music — research shows that classical music stimulates the purchase of luxury goods.

— Surpass

Their Needs Imagine a celebrity was booking an appointment at your spa. If you had a scheduling conflict or they wanted something much more customized than normal, would you turn them away? Never. Every client needs to be served in this way from the initial point of contact. You can always find a solution to

provide the client the service they desire. The spa industry is not about cost leadership, it’s about delivering an exceptional experience. Every employee shares the same responsibility: to create a sublime experience by anticipating and surpassing clients’ needs. In order for a spa to be successful, the spa director needs to be stationed at the front desk, delivering services that are met with 100 percent satisfaction. This is why proper staff training is so important.

— Staff Training Are you and your staff perpetuating smiles? Do you see laughter and an overall sense of enjoyment? Do you see frowns, employees looking flustered and clients getting frustrated or impatient? You must treat your employees like ladies and gentlemen, making

sure their work environment is calming and that they are able to take breaks and recharge. If pushed too hard, your employees and your business suffer. Education is key to maintaining the highest level of excellence for your clients. Books, articles and media posts about the skin care and spa industry should be required reading on a regular basis. From these, you can create and implement important client amenities such as a customer service program, which is an excellent way to elevate the quality of your spa.

WOW YOUR CLIENTS

— Connect

Emotionally Studies show the emotional aspects of a cosmetics brand have a greater impact on consumer satisfaction than the functional ones. Satisfaction is greatest when the brand strengthens positive emotions through presenting an attitude of “caring for oneself” and alleviating feelings of guilt from falling short of caring for one’s appearance. Focus on creating these positive associations for your spa as well. Have personal conversations and treat clients as though they are part of your family from the moment they step in the door. Ask questions in order to provide an effective and customized treatment, but that is only half the equation. Next time you are engaged in conversation, really listen to the person. Too often, we are busy thinking about what we are going to say or do next, but it is essential to remain present and be mindful. This will surely make your client feel like they are the most important person in the room.

WOW YOUR CLIENTS

— WELL-MANAGE

DAILY TRAFFIC A good team ensures every client leaves happy and satisfied. You need to have the appropriate amount of personnel to provide luxury service to your clients. For an 1,800-2,000 square foot spa, two people in the front desk area should suffice. A receptionist answers phone calls and signs clients in, while the client manager oversees product sales and offers advice on treatments, retail and beauty consultations. They also follow up diligently with clients by sending out personalized thank you cards that communicate what a pleasure it was to fulfill their needs. Empower your staff to make regular clients feel special by upgrading their services. Your staff must be fully knowledgeable about all treatment procedures and product lines, as it is your

team’s responsibility to book clients and help grow your business.

— IMAGE

IS EVERYTHING Your job is to treat the health of the skin, educate clients about proper care and recommend products. To accomplish these things, you must portray a credible image that conveys your knowledge and professionalism. Looks, attitude and personality are as important as knowledge and technical skill. You need to exude positive energy and a healthy lifestyle, reflected in a genuine smile, good posture and firm handshake. This professional image can be reinforced in the way you email clients or even when they first find you on your website. Be sure these two venues are fully reflective of the image you want

to convey. At the same time, you have to take care of yourself before you can care for others or offer beauty advice. Eat balanced meals to keep your energy level high throughout a busy day. Also remember to exercise to feel and look younger. Regular exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormone which helps reduce stress, so you can pass that benefit along to your clients.

MAKE YOUR WEBSITE

MOBILEFRIENDLY

— a necessity It’s official. The majority of today’s consumers, 51 percent and growing, no longer view your website from their desktops. While suspected for some time, Google only recently confirmed it, stating in an Adwords post, “More Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the U.S. and Japan.” What does this mean to the spa business owner or anyone with a spa-related website? Quite simply, if your website isn’t mobile friendly, you’re missing out. Mobile friendly browsing provides huge opportunities to increase your number of users and, most importantly, your income.

I

t all starts with the user’s website experience. You

may have spent significant time and money creating a beautiful desktop website that 80 percent of users enjoyed, but that same website today, because it’s most frequently viewed on a mobile device, is a good experience for only

50 percent of visitors.

You’re actually losing, not gaining, new customers and many of your existing customers are probably frustrated with your website.

In technology, perhaps more than any other industry, time is money. Our fast-paced, fast food world wants instant gratification. Consumers can’t, and won’t, spend much time researching or waiting around for results. If they pull up your website and cannot instantly determine your business’ name, mission and point of difference, they’ll move on in the blink of an eye. It’s a lot like speed dating—on steroids. Instead of four to five minutes typically allotted to each person, your website viewers give you three to five seconds to win them over. You’ve got to look your best, say your best and show them your magic in mere seconds. Only then can they determine whether you’re worth taking the conversation further. If you can’t get them past that, they’ll click away from you faster than Kim Kardashian dumped her first two husbands. Buh-bye!

An ambiance is created within the spa through soothing music, attractive décor, cozy treatment rooms and the unmistakable “spa” smell: the luxurious, gentle scent of essential oils that lulls guests into that wonderful state of calm as they enter the treatment area. The power of aromatherapy helps wash away the side effects of stress and offers additional possibilities in our treatments.

n the treatment room, another group of oils has also become an integral part of our spa treatment and beauty care regimen. These oils are complex compounds cold pressed from vegetables, nuts and seeds. Unlike their aromatic counterparts, these natural lipids have no aroma but possess precious nutrients essential to skin health. One might naturally assume that both types of oils would leave a greasy feel on the skin when applied, but in fact the opposite is true.

ESSENTIAL

OILS

Modern aromatherapy is both an art and a science, however most people don’t understand the chemical complexity of essential oils. The actual chemistry of each essential oil comes from two sources: 1) The natural biological activities of the plant during the growing and reproductive phase. 2) A result of the by-products of distillation. These chemical compounds give essential oil its unique characteristics and therapeutic properties to deliver an abundance of skin care benefits. Essential oils are also known to carry or enhance the absorption of other compounds or ingredients into the skin. Anna Herman, a noted researcher in the field was quoted in the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology saying: “After application to the skin, essential oils and their components are rapidly metabolized, not accumulated in the organism and are fast excreted, which strongly suggests they can be successfully used as safe penetration enhancers.”

Properties of Essential Oils -Antibacterial -Antiviral -Antifungal -Antioxidant -Anti-inflammatory

Functions of Essential Oils -Stimulate healthy cell turnover -Promote wound healing -Calming and sedating effects

BEAUTY BENEFITS Anti-aging Adding an essential oil-based serum to your treatments and your client’s home care in conjunction with their water-based serums effectively enhances the overall penetration value of their skin care. Electrical currents change the chemistry of essential oils, therefore all essential serums are used post machinery. Following peels and microdermabrasion treatments, these essential serums are even more rapidly absorbed, restoring barrier function, calming inflammation, increasing hydration, reducing pigment and enhancing the action of lifting and firming peptides.

Application: Post treatment, apply a waterbased serum, then place a few drops of lipid serum over the top.Complete the treatment with the appropriate cream.

Acne A skin care problem initially caused by the over production of oil can be treated with the application of another oil. Essential oils are antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal, and present a different set of options in the treatment of acne. The use of essential oils alongside glycolic and salicylic acid to clear the follicle can be applied to quickly bring P.Acnes under control, along with occurring inflammation and infection. Use a commercial pre-blended product in the correct carrier oil for oily skin, and avoid the use of single notes as they may irritate the skin. Choosing the wrong carrier oil base could cause more issues than it corrects, as these cold pressed oils have their own recommended therapeutic properties.

Application: After cleansing and drying skin, apply a few drops of the chosen blend to finger pads. Gently press the oils onto the surface of the skin. Apply to the affected areas and then gently blend the residue of the oil over the remaining surface area. Complete with a light moisturizer.

COLD PRESSED

PLANT OILS Cold pressed oils from vegetables, nuts and seeds are natural compounds considered highly beneficial for all aspects of beauty care. These oils can be used alone or in combinations. When the best grade is used for the intended purpose, these natural plant compounds are safe and reliable, and boast astounding benefits. They can actually form the foundation or even the actives in many cosmetic formulas and treatments. Fats or oils are the major components of cell walls and intracellular membranes, so it’s not surprising that these cold pressed oils are important in skin care. They are popular due to their low incidence of irritation, sensitization and comedogenicity. Examples of cold pressed oils include soya, argan, sweet almond, coconut, peach nut, avocado, wheat germ, macadamia, calendula and hazelnut.

Properties of Cold Pressed Oils • Essential fatty acids and ceramides • Antioxidants • Phytosterols • Amino acids

Functions of Cold Pressed Oils • Provide valuable emollient properties to the skin • Restore barrier function

BEAUTY BENEFITS Cleansing Oil-based cleansers are a relatively recent trend, consisting of cold pressed oils and essential oils. These cleansers break down excess sebum as well as makeup, providing emollient properties as they gently cleanse skin. Argan oil is a free radical scavenger, has more vitamin E than most and contains carotenes and phytosterols. It prevents drying and slows the physiological aging of the skin by restoring its hydrolipid film. Calendula oil reduces redness. Apricot kernel oil addresses overall skin sensitivity.

Application: Apply to dry skin, massage in and slowly add water until product emulsifies and rinses away, leaving the skin clean and soft.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

Body care Consider stepping up your massage menu with a custom blend of emollient oils to address dry skin on any area of the body. Avocado oil is highly moisturizing and skin softening. It promotes cellular regeneration, and its action on dry and fragile skins is well documented. Repeated use and massage of avocado oil on the skin has demonstrated an increase in hydration to the upper layers of the skin and an apparent increase in the elasticity.

Application: Blend a small amount of avocado oil with sweet almond oil. Lighten with some grapeseed oil if desired.

Nail Care Cold pressed oils can provide important benefits for nails, as well as dry skin surrounding the nails of the hands and feet. Argan oil is recommended to fortify fragile nails, while sweet almond oil is an excellent emollient for chapped hands and is used extensively in skin care preparations.

Application: Massage into dry cracked heels or hands before applying massage cream for a manicure service.

Hair Care Dry, brittle hair on an aging client can benefit from formulations containing cold pressed oils, which can penetrate the hair follicle as natural conditioning agents. A blend may include emollient and restoring oils such as macadamia, sweet almond, coconut and moringa seed oils. Combined with a new breed of silicones to restore shine, they can improve body and shine for an anti-aging effect.

Application: Add a few drops of quality cold pressed oils into essential oils and use in a scalp massage as a relaxing add-on treatment.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

The desire for any spa client is to rebalance, nourish and protect their skin, maintain moisture, reduce lines and address excessive dryness or oiliness. Oils can target these issues, but our clients often feel reluctance to add oils to their skin, in fear that this will only make it more oily.

H

owever, this is not the case when the right oil or blend of oils is used. While some oils, such as evening primrose or borage oil, have universal regenerative properties that are beneficial to everyone, choosing the proper oil for moisturizing purposes varies by skin type.

TAILORED TO DOSHA SKIN TYPES VATA Oils that are rich, heavy and slightly warming provide balance for this dry skin type. Good options include sesame, avocado, macadamia nut and hemp seed oil.

Pitta Oils used for normal, sensitive or combination skin should be of medium viscosity, more middle-of-the-road in their ability to moisturize the skin. Because Pitta skin usually runs warm, the oils should be cooling. Sunflower, coconut, almond and olive oil are beneficial.

Kapha The lightest oils, with the smallest molecular structure, are the best fit for this oilier skin. The oily skin is not oily because of oil, but because of dehydration at a cellular level. This sends a signal to the sebaceous glands, which then produce an excess of oil to make up for a lack of moisture. An oily skin type requires hydration and moisturization in measure. Grapeseed, hazelnut and jojoba oils absorb very well.

The purpose of adding essential oils to body oils is different than the purpose of adding them to facial oils. The essential oils that are blended in a facial product are primarily for the skin’s benefit, and the smell disappears quickly as it’s absorbed into the skin. A body oil, on the other hand, should be made up of a lingering aromatic blend that is beneficial to the psyche. Just as with face oils, some essential oils are beneficial for every skin type. Turmeric, evening primrose, helichrysum, spikenard and carrot seed are good examples. Other essential oils reap more benefits when chosen for specific skin types or emotional benefits.

Just as with face oils, some essential oils are beneficial for every skin type. Turmeric, evening primrose, helichrysum, spikenard and carrot seed are good examples.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

Vata Essential oils that are very regenerative are beneficial for this dry skin, as Vata skin tends to show signs of aging very early in life. Sea buckthorn berry, rosehip seed and frankincense are good options. Vata is aggravated when they feel anxious, worried, ungrounded or scattered. To balance Vata emotionally, vetiver, myrrh, ginger, clary sage or other grounding and warming scents can be beneficial.

Pitta Calming essential oils such as lemongrass, blue chamomile, melissa and sandalwood are very beneficial to normal, sensitive or combination skin. Pitta is aggravated when they feel irritable or controlling. To balance Pitta emotionally, jasmine, rose, lavender and geranium are useful, as they help cool down fiery emotions.

Kapha Essential oils that are sebum balancing but also stimulating are good for Kapha skin, as it tends to be congested when out of balance. Bitter orange, lemon, cypress, juniper and litsea cubeba are helpful. Kapha is aggravated when they feel lethargic or overly attached. To balance Kapha emotionally, utilize essential oils such as fir needle, clove, eucalyptus, bergamot and cypress, which are energizing and slightly warming.

6 FACE OILS FOR THE PERFECT COMPLEXION Just a few drops of oil are necessary for an application. If using alone, two to three drops generally suffice. Facial oils allow for creativity when it comes to blending with other oils. Make sure to always follow your manufacturer’s instructions carefully.

Evening Primrose Oil This extremely nourishing oil for the skin is very high in the essential fatty acid known as gamma-linolenic acid, which inhibits bacterial growth, helps protect against infection and inflammation and is useful for certain dry skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

Rosehip Oil The anti-aging oil can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin especially easily, partly because of its content of B-carotene (a form of vitamin A), which has small molecules. Vitamin A also improves the skin’s moisture levels and, combined with essential fatty acids, helps improve skin tone and pigmentation, as well as reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Rosehip oil is also rich in antioxidants and vitamins A and C. The antioxidants from vitamin C help to stimulate collagen. Rosehip oil can also address redness and irritation.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

Borage Oil Nourishing and hydrating to the skin, this oil is exceptional for mature or damaged skin, where regeneration is needed. It contains important vitamins and minerals and is among the richest sources of gamma linolenic acid found in nature.

Macadamia Oil High in manganese (important for the regeneration of collagen) and monounsaturated fatty acids (which act as anti-inflammatory agents), this oil also contains linoleic acid (Omega 6) and oleic acid (Omega 9) to help moisturize and soften the skin, as well as an antimicrobial and anti-aging ally, palmitoleic acid (Omega 7).

Sesame Oil This great emollient absorbs easily into the skin. It contains potent antioxidants and is high in vitamins and minerals such as omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins E, K and B6, sesamol, phosphorus, magnesium and calcium. Sesame helps improve circulation in the skin, has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and helps protect the skin from sun damage. Sesame oil can attract and trap oil soluble toxins, which help detoxify the skin.

Hazelnut Oil This very light oil absorbs easily into the skin. Its antibacterial and astringent properties can help regulate oil secreted by the sebaceous glands. This makes it beneficial for oily or acneic skin. Hazelnut is rich in essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid and is very nourishing to the skin. It has regenerative and antioxidant properties, and helps protect the skin from sun damage.

W

hile treating full-blown disease requires extensive training, experience and a license to diagnose and prescribe, you don’t need to be a doctor to enhance spa therapies with essential oils. Most spa clients are looking for relief from daily stressors when they put themselves in our hands.

CONSULTATION How can spa professionals ensure they give a client great results with an aromatherapy treatment? The first step is to determine the following six factors through a questionnaire or consultation:

1 Treatment goals What are the client’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs? What results do they want to see?

2 Location of imbalance Where does the client want to experience improvement? For example, if the face feels dry and tight, then the skin needs improvement and balance. Compromised breathing, on the other hand, means that bronchioles and sinuses need improvement.

3 Qualities of imbalance Is the client reporting too much dryness? Too much tension? Your goal then is to deliver moisture or release, respectively.

4 Choose therapy and delivery method After determining location and sensory qualities of imbalance, decide on the best therapy and delivery methods for your client’s treatment.

The two main avenues for introducing the benefits of essential oils into the body are inhalation and skin absorption. Inhalation, which entails breathing in aromatic microparticles, is the most direct and efficacious way to deliver essential oil benefits to the respiratory, central nervous, neurological, immunological and hormonal systems. In topical absorption, on the other hand, essential oils are absorbed in minute quantities through the skin, depending on the oil, dilution and type of application. Some therapies offer both avenues, and treatments can also be combined to utilize both pathways into the body.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

5 Oil selection Many essential oil companies offer a client questionnaire to facilitate oil selection for a client’s custom treatment. Therapists can refer to the results to mix a specific formula into a carrier for the service. Blending several of the right essential oils together offers a more dynamic benefit than the sum of the individual oils. Blending botanical ingredients can also help protect against potential side-effects of a plant-derived ingredient used on its own.

6 Client’s response Present your client with the oil for a “sniff test.” Affinity for the fragrance enhances the therapeutic effect, while dislike for the scent reduces the benefits of the treatment.

THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS Environmental immersion Immersive aromatherapy pervades the air around your client, intensifies their experience and creates a powerful memory of it. Create immersion by placing a diffuser in treatment room specific to the client’s needs. To extend this effect beyond the treatment room to the entire spa, take this advice from Rex Rombach at Ajne Scent Systems: “You can turn your reception area, yoga hall, treatment wing or your entire spa into an uplifting and purified environment by diffusing your signature essential oil formula with a waterless scent tower.”

Blending several of the right essential oils together offers a more dynamic benefit than the sum of the individual oils.

Palm inhalation Palm inhalation can awaken the brain and nervous system to the nature of the treatment, and invite both therapist and client to connect with the healing intent for the session. Apply 1-2 drops of oil to the palms, rub together gently and loosely cup open hands above client’s face. Ask them to inhale deeply.

Steam inhalation Steam inhalation is a powerful method of delivering aromatic oils via inhalation and skin absorption, effectively deepening the benefits of facial massage and skin care. It penetrates tissues, loosens residue on skin, opens pores, boosts circulation and subtle energy flow in face, neck, sinuses and bronchioles. Add 1-5 drops essential oil to a pot or bowl of hot water and place on a table. Place a chair next to table for client. Cover head and shoulders with a towel to create a “steam tent.” Ask the client to hold face a safe distance over steam source and inhale the fragrant steam for up to 10 minutes. Follow with an application of skin-protective oil or moisturizer.

For a full body aromatherapy wrap, mix up to 12 drops of essential oil(s) into 2 ounces body cream, body milk or oil with a deeply moisturizing base ingredient such as shea butter. Warm the emollient, then apply with a brush or hand to entire body, section by section, avoiding delicate areas and all mucous membranes. Massage in if desired. Wrap each section of the body in a warm flannel cloth, then swaddle the entire body in a large warm towel or blanket, and let client relax for 20 minutes. Unwrap and massage further if desired. Remove excess emollient with moist warm towels.

A pre-treatment aromatherapy bath boosts relaxation and circulation, opens pores and deepens the effects of a primary treatment. Add the recommended amount of aromatherapy bath oil or salts to a tub filled with warm water, or create your own essential oil-scented bath formula by adding 5-10 drops essential oil into 1/2 to 1 cup of salt or other emulsifier, such as milk or sesame oil. Aromatherapist and healer David Crow explains the importance of using an emulsifying carrier in essential oil bath preparations. “Without salts or an emulsifier, drops of essential oils will

float on the water and settle directly on skin. Combined with the heat of the water, this can cause irritation, especially if the oils are of a heating nature.”

Eye and nervous system cooler The eye and nervous system cooler relaxes weary eye muscles. Hydrosols, water based healing and fragrant byproducts of steam distilled essential oils, cool and moisten delicate skin around eyes to relieve dryness, irritation and swelling. Spray refrigerated rose hydrosol to dampen two round cotton pads. Place one over each eye. Cover with a clean cloth or tissue, and weigh it in place with an aromatic flax eye pillow or folded terrycloth hand towel.

Local aromatic compress An aromatic compress can ease joint stiffness and inflammation, muscle aches and pains, menstrual cramps, promote bruise and wound healing and boost skin health. Mix 10 drops essential oil into 4 ounces of hot water or hydrosol. Soak cotton, squeeze out excess water. Wrap affected area and cover with towel to contain warmth.

When offering aromatic immersion by diffusion, be mindful of the amount of oil you diffuse, and ensure sufficient ventilation.

ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY GUIDELINES Essential oils are natural, but they are powerful volatile substances and must be handled with care! To ensure optimal results and protect both clients and therapists, follow these important safety guidelines: 1. Dilute prior to application. Mix up to 15 drops essential oil into 1 ounce carrier oil, blending well to avoid unintentional areas of high essential oil concentration. For children 14 and younger, no more than 7 drops of essential oil per ounce of base is generally considered safe. *Exception: Applying up to 2 drops straight essential oil to the thick skin of palms or soles of feet should not pose any danger. 2. Never introduce oils directly to eyes or mucous membranes. 3. When offering aromatic immersion by diffusion, be mindful of the amount of oil you diffuse, and ensure sufficient ventilation. If client is left alone, provide a way for them to communicate with you in case of any problem or discomfort. 4. When offering a steam inhalation, provide adequate distance between client’s eyes, nose and mouth and the steam source, especially in the beginning of treatment when the release of volatile constituents is most intense.

5. Determine allergies, chemical sensitivities, hyper-sensitive skin, immune dysfunction, active dermatitis and which areas have broken skin or acute inflammation. If in doubt, patch test prior to treatment. 6. Never use essential oils on the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, infants or young children (unless you’re a qualified medical practitioner with clinical training in the use of essential oils as medicine), and never recommend the use of essential oils internally. 7. Prior to sun exposure, do not apply oils of angelica root, rue and non-steam distilled citrus oils like lemon, lime, grapefruit, mandarin, orange and bergamot. These oils contain furanocoumarin, a naturally-occurring organic chemical compound which can cause photosensitive skin itching or rash if exposed to the sun or other UV light, up to 36 hours after application.

Olfaction Connection The Impact of Scents on the Brain By Raquel Levy

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

f recent research is any indication, it seems Toucan Sam’s advice of “Follow your nose, it always knows” applies to much more than Fruit Loops and might be more accurate than we thought. Though the human sense of smell is often underestimated, a team of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley found that, when asked to track a scent with both nostrils, humans did so in the same manner as dogs and almost as accurately1. This means the nose is a crucial conduit to the brain and the effects of aromatherapy may be much more potent than we realize, not only on your client’s body but in their brain as well.

Lane to the Brain The receptors in our noses communicate with the amygdala and hippocampus centers of our brains, which store emotions and memories. In fact, the olfactory system is the only sensory system that serves as a direct processing path for the amygdala and the limbic system. This is why certain scents can trigger specific memories even as far back as childhood. Researchers are coming to find essential oils have similar effects on brain cells as some medications, and others believe the oil molecules may even interact with enzymes or hormones when absorbed through the skin. In addition to the healing and relaxation aspects of hands-on treatments like massage, you may also be positively affecting your clients’ mental health when incorporating aromatherapy. It’s important to be cautious, not just with the physical contraindications of aromatherapy such as allergies, asthma and pregnancy, but also with negative scent recall. Though rare and hard to prevent, if a client has had a traumatic memory involving a certain scent, a therapeutic aromatherapy treatment

may be everything but. Try asking clients if they prefer any one scent to another or if there are any scents they don’t like.

Soothe From the Latin root word meaning “to wash,” lavender has long been used in soaps, shampoos and lotions, earning a reputation as fragrant and soothing, perhaps for good reason. With its calming effects when inhaled, the lavender herb has been shown to be a remedy for insomnia, anxiety, depression and fatigue. In a randomized study conducted on “The effects of lavender scent on dental patient anxiety levels,” researchers assessed the anxiety levels of patients waiting for a dentist appointment, one group exposed to the scent of lavender and another without. Results showed that the lavender group reported significantly lower anxiety than the control group2, making the use of lavender a perfect choice to soothe your clients’ cares away. If your spa’s business statement seeks to offer balance and harmony between your clients and the environment around them, aromatherapy may also aid in this intention. Scientists from the Mie University School of Medicine in Japan found that patients with depression exposed to a citrus fragrance needed smaller doses of their antidepressants3. The citrus fragrance treatment normalized their hormone levels and served to better restore homeostatic balance.

Invigorate Aromatherapy scents can be used for much more than to relax your clients. If your mission is to inspire and invigorate, you can make use of their olfactory system to complement your energizing treatments.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

The scent of rose, though associated with soft colors and smells, has been shown to increase memory recall in students studying for exams, even without being exposed to the scent again4. The whiff of this fragrance stimulates the transfer of information to the part of the brain responsible for long-term memories. And it’s not just memory, rose can also lead to having pleasant dreams5. Similarly, jasmine, peppermint and cinnamon can improve problem-solving abilities and the ability to concentrate. Peppermint has also been shown to improve performance in athletes completing push-ups, grip strength exercises and 400-metre dashes6. If your spa’s wellness programs include physical activities, the use of peppermint can enhance your client’s results for a more marked difference in their well-being journey.

Scent Marketing You already know that a clean, inviting and attractive retail space increases sales. But there’s a potent tool you may not be using: your client’s sense of smell. Most consumers associate pleasant odors with their favorite stores, increasing their loyalty and the chance they will visit again. What has been named “scent marketing” is becoming more popular across retail spaces, including big names such as Bloomingdales, which incorporates appropriate scents in different departments such as lilac in lingerie and baby powder in infant wear, and Hugo Boss with its signature musky, citrusy scent in all its stores. Dr. Alan Hirsch, founder of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, has conducted upwards of 180 studies relevant to the effects of scents on the brain. In one, he found subjects were 84 percent more likely to purchase Nike sneakers in a scented room and willing to pay an average of $10 more

84

than their counterparts exposed to an identical, but unscented room7. What’s more, certain scents can trigger those elusive impulse purchases. A recent study by Washington State University revealed shoppers spent 20 percent more when the shopping environment was infused with a citrus scent, and they spent more time browsing8. Because scents such as citrus are simple and familiar, the brain requires less effort to process them, freeing it to focus on shopping. The simpler the scent, the study found, the more effect it had on purchasing. Thinking back to scent recall, a whiff of pine during the holiday season or the scent of coconut in the summer can remind guests of treasured memories, prompting them to purchase the seasonal item on display.

Scents and their Shown Effects on the Brain

On The Nose

Peppermint: concentration, increased physical activity.

The human sense of smell is an amazing thing. Directly linked to our brain and memory center like no other system, scents can trigger memories, soothe anxiety and invigorate the brain and body. Besides creating a more pleasant space in your spa, the use of aromatherapy can have numerous benefits for both your clients and business.

For whatever the purpose of your business, whether to soothe or invigorate and inspire, there’s an aromatherapy scent that can enhance your offerings. Lavender: decreased anxiety, relaxation. Rose: better memory recall, pleasant dreams. Jasmine and cinnamon: problem solving, concentration.

Citrus: can increase the chance of impulse purchases, decrease depression.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

Essential Facts The Dos and Don’ts of Purchasing Oils

By Jenefer Palmer

E

ssential oils are concentrated, volatile, chemical compounds that are found in roots, stems, leaves, flowers and fruits. Only pure essences, extracted either through distillation or cold-pressing, have the ability to stimulate the limbic center of our brain and heal. Synthetic fragrance oils aim to duplicate the scent of essential oils, but they contain none of the chemical compounds or aromatherapeutic benefits. Unfortunately, there is no governing body to oversee or certify essential oil production and sales. Often, the labeling is deeply misleading. Thus, with the many different essential oils and brands to choose from, sourcing a high quality essential oil can be a daunting task.

Distinguishing Factors to Assess 1) Name If only the common name (i.e. “lavender essential oil”) is listed on the label, the product is likely a lower cost hybrid. The plant’s Latin name should be listed on the label or website for an essential oil. 2) Lack of specification If the label doesn’t specify that it’s an essential oil, it isn’t. “Lavender oil” is merely perfumed oil; it may not even contain material from the plant itself, and certainly won’t have the same therapeutic properties as essential oil.

3) Price True essential oils are almost always pricey, as a very large amount of plant material is required to fill a bottle of essential oil, particularly if the botanical is scarce. Cheaper oils are almost always poor quality oils that have been handled improperly or adulterated with chemicals or other oils. 4) Packaging Pure essential oils must be packaged in pharmaceutical amber glass, violet glass or aluminum containers to filter out ultra-violet light and prevent oxidization or degradation. Bottles should be kept in a cool place, since heat interferes with the oil’s chemical composition.

THE POWER OF OILS GUIDE

5) Feel Essential oils should never be oily; an oily texture can be a sign that an extender has been added. Some vendors “extend” essential oils by mixing them with less expensive nut and seed oils such as jojoba or solvents like benzoin. 6) How it pours Look for an essential oil sealed with an orifice reducer — a plug that controls how many drops come out at once. This feature prolongs the shelf life of oxidation-prone oils by limiting their exposure to air. Be wary of essential oils with built-in dropper pipettes. These little tubes are generally made of plastic or rubber, which can both break down and release synthetic impurities into the oil.

bet, as it means the plant was harvested in the wild, rather than farmed. 3) Bulking This process may be done several ways, including distilling plants from different farms and harvests together or mixing several oils post-distillation. Bulking reduces the quality of the finished product and is often done to make the product cheaper. 4) Rectification When an essential oil contains impurities or has been contaminated, redistillation can purify it. This process also removes phototoxic furocoumarins from bergamot and lemon verbena essential oils.

In addition to the official USDA seal, oils labeled “wild-crafted” are also a safe bet, as it means the plant was harvested in the wild, rather than farmed. Labeling terms to understand 1) Grades There are no approved grades of essential oils and therefore labels such as “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade” have no real meaning.

86

|

5) Folded A folded essential oil has been further distilled and concentrated either five fold (times) or 10 fold (times). Citrus oils like orange, lemon and bergamot are most commonly folded to remove naturally occurring terpenes that make the oil prone to oxidation.

2) Purity Currently there is no official or standardized definition of what is “pure” when it comes to essential oils.

6) Reconstituted Oils that are reconstituted have had natural or synthetic chemical components added to them after the distillation process.

3) Wild crafted Because essential oils are plant-derived, avoiding pesticide contamination by buying organic is common sense. In addition to the official USDA seal, oils labeled “wild-crafted” are also a safe

After you create a shortlist of essential oil companies based on these distinctions, ensure you request the following information from potential vendors before making a final purchasing decision:

1) How is the oil distilled? There are two ways to extract essential oils and preserve the therapeutic benefits: distillation and expression. Synthetic fragrance oils are produced by blending aromatic chemicals, primarily derived from coal tar. 2) Are Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) available for each of the oils? A reputable supplier should be able to provide these for all of their products. 3) Who are their other clients? Look for suppliers who work with people, practitioners and treatment centers you respect. Do they have testimonials they can show you? Are they a member of any organizations that oversee sustainable and good practices, such as the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy or the USA Soil Association? 4) Do they have a website or blog with ongoing education and training? Look to work with a company that has a lot of transparency, great customer service and online tools that provide support beyond the sale. Use these tips to sniff out the best growers, distillers, and most effective essential oils for your practice, products and treatments!

romatherapy dates back to ancient civilizations, but today’s savvy spa owners and vendors have found ways to modernize this spa staple and bring more profits and client satisfaction to their business. The use of essential oils in spa treatments has grown far beyond simply including it in massage oil or lotions to give your client an aromatic treat. More spas are using it as face oils for facials, diffusing it for therapeutic breath-work, and even to bring the body structural and electrical alignment. Here’s a look at six unique aromatherapy treatments...

Aromatherapy 50 minutes, $135 80 minutes, $195 The Mokara Spa Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate Orlando, Fla.

If your clients are getting tired of such tried and true scents as lavender, peppermint and chamomile, it might be time to think outside of the box. That’s exactly what The Mokara Spa is doing with their aromatherapy treatments. “I was looking for something really special and unique to bring to the spa and the ones that we added are really different. Even though it’s aromatherapy, it’s not what you think of when you think of aromatherapy. Instead of it being a literal translation, some are named after elements such as sun, water, Earth, and even ore,” says spa director Caitlin Arpin. So, what exactly does sun smell like? First, the vendor’s description gives an inspirational explanation of it: “Your life, your heart, your whole self here in this golden place. Warm light

all around, enveloped with tenderness, bursting with joy, aflame in love’s rays.” More to the point, Arpin explains that sun is a blend of sweet orange, pink grapefruit, vanilla, sandalwood and heliotrope to connote a vibrant, light and warm aroma. Though it sounds like it would be a tough sell to the client in the treatment room, Arpin says that the smell speaks louder than the description. “It’s completely customized for the client. We let them smell each one before choosing, and honestly, there isn’t even

a favorite. They all are equally popular and I have to restock each scent every month,” she adds.

Inhalation 30 minutes, $30 Jamie’s Therapeutic Touch Palestine, Texas

Jamie’s Therapeutic Touch is taking the concept of aromatherapy to new heights by using this unique method of

tented inhalation. The client lies down on a massage table with their upper body enclosed in a specially designed tent and they breathe in deeply their choice of therapeutic grade essential oils. The 30-minute treatment is broken down with three rounds of five minutes of diffusion and five minutes of resting. “With every breath our lungs expand and contract, taking in oxygen and nourishing every cell in our being,” says owner Jamie Pettiette-Rhone. “This happens about 20,000 times a day with the average person taking 12 breaths a minute. Incorporating the use of essential oils to the process of breathing in this manner infuses the body with all the benefits of the oils being used. I like to think of it as a higher frequency chamber.” Clients have used it for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, relaxation, respiratory ease, allergy relief, mental clarity and to ease digestive distress, boost immune system and alleviate headaches. “They find this method of diffusing essential oils in a concentrated and contained environment to be very potent and it speeds up the healing process that they are going through. Essential oils are known to act on the body, mind and spirit so it’s not surprising that many people report having dramatic responses after one or more tenting sessions,” she says. The spa also offers reflexology as an add-on for this treatment. “Since the body is under the tent only up to about their waist, massage therapy can offer reflexology to the rest of the body at the same time,” she adds.

Euphoria Ritual 100 minutes, $320 The Spa at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Ariz., and Lenox, Mass.

“Incorporating the use of essential oils to the process of breathing in this manner infuses the body with all the benefits of the oils being used.”

The Euphoria Ritual is a head-to-toe experience for a total mind, body and spirit relaxation experience that uses essential oils in different methods throughout the treatment. “We start with a warm compress for the face featuring a blend of juniper, sage, cypress, lavender, and cedarwood that is carefully selected to assist the body and mind into a deep sense of calm. A geranium inhalation and scalp massage helps to relieve tension, balance systems and stimulate circulation. A gentle massage to the shoulders, neck and face is the next step in this purposeful ritual,” says Canyon Ranch Tucson spa director Jacqueline Berry. The treatment then moves on to the body where a warm botanical body mask is applied to the skin, followed by slow gentle compression and a foot massage. “The key ingredient in the herbal body mask is Valerian, which is deeply calming to the nervous system. Then the herbs are gently buffed off and you are led to a soaking tub. A signature blend of grapefruit, orange and cedarwood is added to the bath to soothe muscles, uplift the mind and

ease the nervous system. Following the soak, we use a warmed, herbal-infused body oil lightly massaged onto the skin for the grand finale to this euphoric experience,” adds Berry.

Rosehip Argan Face & Body Oil 10-15-minute add-on, $40 Bella Reina Spa Delray Beach, Fla.

Bella Reina uses their special rosehip argan oil blend as an add-on for facials, scalp massage or body treatments. “The popularity of argan, or face oils, comes from the purity of the nut oil. The oil is high in essential fatty acids and it does not clog pores. It’s non-comedogenic and is very high in Vitamin E. The oil is not greasy, so it feels light on the skin and absorbs quickly,” says owner Nancy Reagan. Since some argan oils have a distinctive nutty smell, Reagan combines it with rosehip, rose and sandalwood. “Our oil has a wonderful immediate top note that lightly touches the nose while it finishes the lingering treatment with the woody base,” she says. Argan oil is a great moisturizer for all skin types, including dry, acne and normal. As part of a facial treatment, the therapist starts with one pump of the oil and does a three-breath inhalation treatment with the guest. “Then the oil is applied to the face. A special facial massage is performed that covers all of the stress points of the face and ends at

the third eye chakra. Then one to two pumps of oil are applied to the scalp and the scalp massage is performed. The scalp massage includes a deep massage of the head and ends at the crown chakra,” she explains.

Black Rose Facial 80 minutes, $270 The Spa at Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Ariz., and Lenox, Mass.

At the heart of this facial is the black rose oil that works wonders on dry or mature skin. The oil is combined with Bulgarian rose and magnolia, which have toning and soothing properties; plum and camelina oils, which maintain the lipid balance of the epidermis; phytosqualane, which nourishes, moisturizes, and strengthens the skin’s protective film, and more. “Facial oils have come a long way and can even be used on oily skin. With a high concentration of active ingredients, this silky-smooth dry oil, rich in omega 3 and 6, prepares and

nourishes with an anti-aging effect. It visibly smooths wrinkles and fine lines, and revitalizes the skin for a radiant complexion. This oil provides the essential elements for the skin’s vitality and youthfulness with its powerful blend of plant-based active ingredients that nourish, regenerate and protect,” says Berry.

Raindrop Therapy 75 minutes, $150 Resplendent Day Spa Long Beach, Calif. Resplendent Day Spa’s Raindrop Technique uses reflexology, massage and aromatherapy to help with the body’s structural alignment, bring balance to the body, and align the focal energy centers of the body and release them if they are blocked. “It’s a sequence of anointing with oils using specific therapeutic oils on key pressure points of the body. It’s called ‘raindrop’ because we drop the oil in a dotted line along the spine from above and then gently massage it in. It brings structural and electrical alignment to the body in a relaxing and invigorating manner through the power of therapeutic essential oils,” says owner Yvonne Tuchscher. Most of the raindrop oils they use are high in phenolic content to ward off viruses and bacteria while cleansing cellular receptor sites to enhance inter- and intra-cellular communication and improve overall bodily function.

here are generally two species of rose used in skin care: rosa damascena and rosa centifola. Rosa damascena, often from Bulgaria or Turkey, has a deep, heady and floral scent. Rosa centifola, known as the Moroccan rose, has the aroma of freshly picked rose petals giving way to a light, clean and sweet scent. Both are valued for their pure essential oils, directly derived from the flowers. It takes about 60,000 rose blossoms to yield one ounce of rose oil, making it one of the most expensive essential oils. Fortunately, only a few drops of the oil are needed to reap the benefits.

Bring peace of mind to your clients with yoga in the spa Today, guests come to spas looking for more than a simple facial or massage — many are seeking personal transformation. In response, spas are offering wellness services ranging from meditation to fitness classes. Yet one discipline stands out in the wellness spectrum, as it combines the benefits of the others by providing healing and strengthening for the mind, body and spirit.

eveloped in India thousands of years ago, yoga came to the United States at the turn of the 19th century and has infiltrated spas as the wellness movement has grown. As Stephanie Nadanarajah of Love Organic Spa, Salon and Yoga in Simi Valley, Calif. shares, “Yoga brings the mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of oneself into balance through physical movement, conscious breathing, focus and introspection.” The discipline’s vast benefits make it a perfect offering for spa owners looking to bring both inner and outer transformation to their guests.

WHY OFFER YOGA? If you’re thinking of adding yoga to your spa because you are devoted to the transformational power of the discipline, you are on the right path. Incorporating yoga as an offering can

CLIENT FEEDBACK AND BENEFITS While spa yoga classes provide a welcome space for clients already devoted to the discipline, they also serve as gateways for clients not yet familiar with yoga to dive in. “We offer yoga in a way that makes it comfortable for guests of all levels, ages, shapes and sizes to participate,” Patti McCormick of Sana Vida in Marble Falls, Texas elaborates. “We do this by offering a wide range of classes from Chair Yoga to Power Yoga. Guests tell us that they appreciate feeling welcomed and accepted.” “With regular practice, guests can benefit with better flexibility, joint lubrication, stress reduction, improved muscle strength, better balance and posture, increased self acceptance and confidence, adrenal gland regulation, increased serotonin, decreased cor-

Spa owners often add a yoga studio initially because they believe in the benefits it can bring to guests. “I wanted to cultivate a mind, body and spirit experience for my clients, and I thought that yoga was a natural fit to complement spa services here,” explains Diane Ludwigsen of The Spa at Sacred Grounds in Ephraim, Wis.

ESSENTIALS So what does it take to get a yoga studio up and running? “You have to have a quiet place,” says Mia Good of Metamorphosis Organic Salon & Spa in Pittsburgh, Pa. When it comes to design and equipment, Nadanarajah adds that,

“A firm yet comfortable floor that absorbs some shock is great. Minimize the distractions in the rooms such as extraneous décor and mirrors. Many teachers also use a stereo system. Props ensure accessibility for all types of students, so they are a must: blocks, straps, bolsters and blankets. And then have a few spare mats on hand.” Once spa owners have built an appropriate studio, finding quality teachers is the biggest challenge many face. McCormick has found teachers through word of mouth, by running ads on Craigslist or through the teacher training program she runs at Sana Vida. Good found a few of her original teachers through a local yoga Facebook group and has developed a strong teacher referral network through those original employees.

MARKETING YOGA Spas generally take all the traditional routes to marketing yoga: social media, a web presence, newsletters, magazine ads and brochures. Yet some of their best sales come through face-to-face approaches. Good acquaints the community with Metamorphosis’ yoga program by teaching free classes at festivals and community events. Ludwigsen has similarly hosted a free yoga festival at her spa, and both offer specialized workshops to draw in new yogis.

At Sana Vida all therapists practice yoga and provide clients with a “Wellness Prescription” following their treatment, which includes a suggestion for a yoga class or private yoga session. The spa also regularly gives free class passes to any client who they believe would especially benefit from a class. Discounts for yoga classes, with or without a spa treatment, are also common. At the Spa at SacredGrounds, Ludwigsen discounts yoga classes from $15 to $10 for any client who purchases a spa treatment. At Love Organic Spa, a new student’s first class is always free, and the spa offers a week of free yoga with their spa deals. Finally, spas have found that offering custom private group yoga classes as part of a spa day to be a popular draw for groups.

RETURN ON INVESTMENT The initial and recurring costs to run a yoga studio are low, once the room has been developed. “Good mats at wholesale can be $20 to $40. A set of blocks can run $5, and straps can run $3 or so per strap. Blankets can be $7.50 each and bolsters can run $15 plus,” Nadanarajah explains. But once bought, these props can last for years. Spas typically pay teachers based on attendance, with a base rate if no one shows up. Instructors at Metamorphosis, for example, might make anywhere from $15 to $65 per class, depending on the number of students. Given these costs, spas can quickly break even and then profit from a yoga program, although it does not return the same revenue as more traditional spa services.

AGE OF MINDFULNESS

Yet to really see the value yoga brings to the spa it cannot be viewed by revenue alone, but by how it contributes to the overall health of the spa.

Bringing in Clients For McCormick, yoga literally brings people in the door. “A person isn’t going to feel like they can just walk into a spa,” she explains, “But yoga gives everybody the invitation to walk through the doors and check out the place. By doing that it opens the spa up to a whole lot of people who would never come in.” At Sana Vida, she has noticed that whether a guest’s first service is a yoga class or a spa treatment, “within six months they are participating in the other activities and services and products that we offer.” To bring yogis into the spa at the close of a yoga class her teachers share spa appointments that have opened up that day, and students often purchase them.

Transforming Spa Culture There’s also something more intangible that happens to a spa with a yoga

studio. The spa owners interviewed all offer free yoga to their employees and they’ve noticed the results. “Yoga completely changed our environment,” shares Good. “It makes everything more peaceful. Yoga lets everyone take a few steps back and remember why they got into this business — to help people and to connect with people.” For McCormick, yoga is personal. “It’s stressful to be a spa owner, and I don’t think I could have been as successful as I have or been as positive a role model for my employees had I not been so involved with yoga,” she explains. “If someone comes to work and they are in a funk, I say, ‘you know what, I love you, go into the studio between classes and do some yoga.’ They come out a different person.” This personal connection to yoga may just be the secret to success. “It takes a person with a lot of passion in order to be able to pull off running a spa and the same goes for incorporating yoga,” continues McCormick. “The owner or manager is going to be the one who needs to sell, educate the front desk, teach people to answer the phone and choose teachers. You need to believe in it to succeed.”

GROWING Wholeness Indulging your clients with self-grown ingredients by

sing locally sourced ingredients in resorts and spas has been a growing trend over the past few years and moving that concept from the farm into the spa might be easier than you think.

Recently on a trip to Pittsburgh, I encountered a rooftop garden that showcased growing herbs to anyone who happened upon it. It was truly inspiring! Although your spa may not have a rooftop garden, the idea easily translates to a box planter outdoors or a hydroponic system indoors for year-round harvesting. A healing garden is a way to make your facility stand out from the competition and offers many benefits to your clients, staff and bottom line.

GROWING WHOLENESS

We grow herbs and edible plants at our spa and corporate office and it has been a wonderful way to educate our clients on ingredients used in our spa. It gives them an opportunity to see, touch, taste and smell the ingredients listed in many product offerings and our “fresh from our garden ingredient” treatments. Herb gardens are fragrant, green, floral and relaxing — how wonderful for clients to begin the relaxation process upon entering your establishment. Here are six must-have herbs that are easy to grow at your spa, indoors or out:

When and how was makeup implemented into the spa ? The makeup was implemented in April 2014.

|

LET’S TALK MAKEUP

How do you promote your makeup services?

Educating the staff to understand why we need a chemical free mineral line to finish off our facials and help the client with their skin issues was the key to success.

We are all trained to promote the service. During facials we talk about the skin and how a healthy makeup improves your skin overall and can help with issues such as rosacea and acne.

Why did you decide to implement makeup into the spa?

How popular are your makeup services?

I found that during facials I was finding a lot of makeup imbedded into people’s pores. I wanted to give my clients a healthy makeup that lasted and had good ingredients to further their skin care.

Backbar makeup services are very popular, clients love the finishing touches.

What makeup services have the most success?

How are makeup artists selected?

When we apply the makeup on the facial bed after extractions and exfoliation, they see how beautiful it covers and feels.

We do not have makeup artists. We have estheticians that know how to apply makeup and believe in makeup as a continuation of skin care.

What is the surface area of the makeup area compared to the rest of the spa? It’s a small but mighty area — we realize the importance of finishing the equation with a great mineral line.

What prompted you to choose a small size? We are in a resort and have to share retail space with the spa boutique. Because we are not offering wedding or event makeup, we did not need a large area.

How did you choose your makeup line? We were looking for a good quality mineral makeup and by luck a representative for our partner line walked in our door. We have been very successful with them.

How profitable are makeup services? We are known for our spa services so makeup is an ancillary item but we feel it finishes off treatments the best way and protects the skin. Once the client sees their skin after we have applied the minerals it is a very easy sell and repeat client in the spa.

What kind of makeup treatments do you offer on the menu? We simply apply a small amount of makeup post facial. Whether it’s a liquid mixed with a moistener or a light dusting of mineral powder to compliment and protect the skin.

TAILORING MAKEUP F OR WOMEN W I T H GLASSES

I

n recent years, the esthetics of sightsupporting eye wear has evolved tremendously. It used to be that glasses

were a nerdy, unattractive necessity reluctantly worn only by those with imperfect vision. Over time, however, the intellectual look of glasses developed so much appeal that many women stopped wearing contacts to embrace their perfect imperfection as part of a style of its own. Nowadays, every trendy fashion store sells frames for accessorizing the eyes. This new layer creates multiple challenges in makeup artistry. Thus, there is an undeniable need for cosmetics that work synergistically with eye wear.
