Skin Care guide
The plan for a flawless wedding day glow by Tina Zillmann
A
woman’s wedding day is a once in a lifetime event, a ceremony captured forever in photographs. Having healthy and radiant skin on this life-changing day is important for all brides. To make this happen, it is essential for you as their skin care and beauty professional to set up a treatment plan at least six months prior to the wedding so you can deliver the complexion your bride-tobe craves on her big day!

skin type guidelines
Never perform a treatment for the first time the last week before the wedding to avoid an unexpected reaction.
Skin Analysis The first step in a customized bridal treatment plan is the consultation. A re v i e w o f b a s i c s k i n t y p i n g can help keep skin therapists on track in providing personalized care. In addition to taking a skin analysis, clients should complete a questionnaire about their skin concerns, diet and medications in order to determine what's most important to their skin. See sidebar.
SKIN TYPE: Normal Goal: Maintenance and prevention. Characteristics: The skin is clear and smooth and doesn't need much repair. Needs: Maintain a good moisture balance. SKIN TYPE: Combination Goal: Balance. Characteristics: The nose, chin area, and possibly the forehead have larger follicle openings, indicating more oil secretion. Other areas of the face have smaller, more compacted follicle openings with possible flaking. Needs: Balance the two areas so their differences are not so extreme. Treat them as two different skin types. SKIN TYPE: Normal to Oily Goal: Deep cleansing and hydration. Characteristics: This skin is only slightly oily. It is characterized by larger follicle openings that fan out across the cheek area. Needs: For both in spa and home products, use hydrating ingredients. SKIN TYPE: Oily Goal: Deep cleansing and sebum management. Characteristics: This skin has active sebaceous glands; it is shiny and feels thicker. It has enlarged follicle openings (the first clue of excess oil production), which may be filled with dirt or grease or both. Needs: Proper cleansing is vital for the health of oily skin to keep follicle openings clean and clear. SKIN TYPE: Normal to Dry Goal: Keep moisture in the skin. Characteristics: This skin type is similar to dry skin, but with only slight surface dehydration. This skin has fine surface lines. Needs: Clients must keep an intact lipid structure to improve moisture maintenance. SKIN TYPE: Sensitive (can be both a type and a condition) Goal: Calm, nourish and manage healthy lipid and moisture content in the skin. Characteristics: As a type, sensitive skin is thinner with less of a stratum corneum for protection; therefore, nerve endings can be felt more acutely. A simple way to test for sensitive skin is touch blanching: apply gentle pressure to an area of the face and release. If the skin color changes to white, it is sensitive. Needs: Use products that are formulated specifically for sensitive skin.

Treatment Planning, Frequency and Home Care A bonus benefit of beginning wedding prep treatments at least six months prior allows you to identify the treatments that work best for each particular client. Never perform a treatment for the first time the last week before the wedding to avoid an unexpected reaction. Ask your clients to note how soon their skin looks and feels its best post-treatment, and schedule that last treatment before their wedding accordingly. Treatment frequency and home care guidelines should be based on the main conditions being treated. See sidebar on specific skin conditions.
skin condition treatment Each of the following skin conditions should receive a targeted facial featuring extractions and a customized mask at the indicated intervals. Acne: Every two weeks Ingredients and home care: Gentle benzoyl peroxide cleanser and spottreatment product, along with an antioxidant serum Skin discoloration and hyperpigmentation: Every three weeks Ingredients and home care: Products containing vitamin C and E in the morning, a pure retinol product and a serum designed to lift existing discolorations with ingredients such as hydroquinone. Aging: Every four weeks Ingredients and home care: Peptide-infused products along with vitamins C and E in the morning and a pure retinol serum in the evening. Sensitive skin/rosacea: Every four weeks Ingredients and home care: Natural moisturizers such as coconut oil and natural oils from wild plant such as aloe can provide essential acids to the skin without causing breakouts or further irritations.

The condition of one’s skin is greatly influenced by what they eat. In order to achieve the ultimate benefits of any spa treatment, optimal nutrition is key. If your spa has a partnership with a nutritionist, refer every bridal client to them at the very beginning of their wedding prep countdown, at least six months in advance, to ensure there is enough time for improved nutritional habits to reflect on the bride’s skin and body. If a nutritionist is not an option, educate your client on the basics of good skin nutrition: Protein rich foods such

If a nutritionist is not an option, educate your client on the basics of good skin nutrition... as fish, lean meat and eggs supply the amino acids necessary to make collagen; fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines contain beneficial omega fats that promote hydrated, youthful skin; hazelnuts, almonds and chia seeds are packed with zinc, which helps heal blemishes, inflammation and redness. Salty and sugary foods should be
minimized — especially in the final days before the wedding — as they have a drying and aging impact on the skin, robbing the skin of that healthy glow.
Stress Planning a wedding is often a stressful experience, prompting an increase in cortisol that can lead to dehydration, washedout skin and fine lines. Emphasize to your clients how important it is to practice healthy exercise habits, get enough sleep and engage in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation and massage.
Smoking The negative impact of smoking on the skin’s appearance is enormous — just one cigarette robs the skin of vital oxygen for 90 minutes. If a person smokes more than one cigarette in this time period, the skin becomes chronically oxygen deprived.

The Final Countdown! DAY 14: A hot stone massage is perfect at this time, when stress is starting to sink in. Utilize pressure points and use variations of temperatures to relax the muscles of your client and melt away tension. DAY 12: Teach your clients the practice of breath work. Encourage them to do five minutes of this each day. Suggest they also try yoga or Pilates to help de-stress. DAY 11: Prep the skin for spray tanning with a gentle granular scrub with honey to help remove dead skin. Conclude treatment with a soothing body moisturizer. DAY 10: Time for a spray tan trial. Make sure to include contouring of the collarbone and neck. Assess how the colors develop on the client’s skin and take notes so you can adjust according to their desires when spraying them for the big day.
DAY 9: Let the de-puffing begin. Send your client home with a refreshing face mist and eye pads to use each morning and night from this point forward leading up to their wedding day so they will start to look brighteyed and fresh. DAY 5: Perform a soothing facial that focuses on hydration; forgo the extractions in this treatment. DAY 4: Indulge the bride-to-be with a relaxing, full body aromatherapy face and body massage. DAY 3: Apply the final spray tan and contouring. This application should be a breeze, since you have already broken the ice with the trial run! DAY 2: Pamper the bride with a classic manicure and pedicure that includes a paraffin treatment for the feet and hands.
DAY 1: Before your client goes into a full face of makeup, treat them to a 15-minute face massage to plump their skin, and apply a hydrating sheet mask to face, neck and décolleté to help make her skin glow. Treat her to a comforting hand massage while the mask works its magic.

BEYOND the
OXYGEN
FACIAL The Power of Pure Air on the Skin by Carrie Borzillo
A
s the oxygen facial continues to become one of the most booked facial treatments, spa owners are looking for new and innovative ways to capitalize and expand on its popularity. From breathing in pure air at an oxygen bar to taking a bath in its steam, clients can't seem to get enough O2 for its many health and beauty benefits.
BUBBLE PURE AIR Remède Spa at St. Regis Aspen Resort in Aspen, Colo., is launching Bubble Pure Air as a pop-up spa experience at the Aspen Ideas Festival, a thinktank conference, this summer. It's a plastic portable bubble dome that fits one average treatment room with a heated treatment table featuring a tray for products and relaxing spa music in an environment that is 99.995 percent pure oxygen.

The benefits of breathing in pure include hydration, detoxification, mental clarity, hangover relief, headache relief and stress relief, and it diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For the event, Remède Spa is offering their Oxygen Facial (60 minutes, $265) with an eye treatment inside the Bubble Pure Air. "It's like a two-in-one oxygen treatment because you are getting the direct oxygen on your skin with the facial, but the oxygen in the air has no dust or pollutants so it makes your face look 10 times better than if you did the same treatment in a regular treatment room,” says spa director Irisha Steele. “Guests feel so relaxed and their face looks instantly refreshed and glowing."
OXYGEN BAR/LOUNGE Selling oxygen to people might seem like selling snow to Eskimos, but the air we normally breathe contains about 21 percent oxygen, while the rest is nitrogen, argon and other trace gasses. Oxygen bars provide nearly pure oxygen, which clients breathe in either through a small tube inserted into the nostrils called a cannula or a headpiece

from a filtered machine with a tank. "Our oxygen bar is between 90 and 92 percent oxygen, allowing the customer to breathe four to five times the normal amount of oxygen. Oxygen is also a proven detoxifier and has antiaging properties. Younger clients like to come in after a little too much drinking to detox," explains Jamie Pettiette Rhone, owner of Jamie's Therapeutic Touch in Palestine, Texas, who charges $15 for 30 minutes or monthly unlimited packages for $60 and offers the addition of essential oils for aromatherapy as well. Similarly, the Oxygen Lounge is among one of the most popular amenities guests of the Remède Spa get to enjoy. "We've had 4,000 guests come in last year just for oxygen without booking a service, but many who book services do the oxygen lounge too,” says Steele. “Our New Year's Day numbers were very high because it's popular with people who drink too much alcohol."
SUPER-ENRICHED OXYGEN STEAM BATH In the Super-Enriched Oxygen Steam Bath (30 minutes, $80) at La Casa Spa
& Wellness Center in New York, clients relax in a steam cabinet as their pores absorb the activated O3 oxygen. It's a detox bath that kills bacteria, viruses, yeast and fungi, but it also helps to increase circulation, regulate metabolism, increase production of collagen and cartilage, purify blood, reduce inflammation and pain, and more. "We have many clients who come in for ozone with Lyme disease and with cancer, and it helps to relieve pain and inflammation. It works on so many afflictions because it operates at the foundational level of the body: the cell," says Jane Goldberg, Ph.D., founder of La Casa Spa & Wellness Center.
OXIDATIVE EXERCISE During Oxidative Exercise (referred to as EWOT = Exercise with Oxygen Therapy) at La Casa Spa & Wellness Center (15 minutes, $50), clients work out while breathing in oxygen, which increases the amount of oxygen in the blood plasma. Clients stand on a vibrating platform that moves gently so it doesn't feel like exercise at all. "But, what it does is move all your tissues and organs on a deep level,” says Dr. Goldberg.

“As this is happening, clients breathe in oxygen from a mask, which gives the body a super-charge like nothing else." Dr. Goldberg adds that most people are oxygen deficient internally. So any means of getting more oxygen into the body is useful. "Over 90 percent of the body's energy is created by oxygen. Oxygen deficient cells cannot repair themselves. The more oxygen we have in our system, the more energy we are able to produce. In fact, a good definition of vitality is the body’s ability to assimilate oxygen," she adds.
OXYGEN FACIAL Though not new, oxygen facials are certainly growing in popularity and have become, for many spas, the most popular facial treatment on the menu. Lila Castellanos, owner of Doll Face Skincare Studio in Los Angeles, Calif., says her Oxygen Facial (50 minutes, $175) is one of the most popular facials because there are visible effects after just one treatment. "It appeals most to clients with dry, dehydrated skin and those looking to minimize environmental damage with an effective anti-aging treatment,” she says. “It's also extremely popular for brides and anyone headed to a special event." Collagen and elastin production are encouraged through the infusion of oxygen and vitamins into the skin, which helps to provide a visual plumping of the skin and restore volume and firmness to skin that has lost elasticity. "Researchers believe that the infusion of oxygen into the skin may help the skin increase its rate of cellular turnover, creating new skin cells at a faster pace. By increasing blood flow, the number of blood cells is increased and this helps to elevate cellular energy and decreases cellular stress. This increased cell regeneration may assist with acne and the healing of facial scars," she adds. Steele says The Oxygen Facial is Remède Spa's most popular facial — they performed 850 of them in 2016
and, again, it was popular on New Year's Day with people who overindulged the night before. "It's intensely hydrating and gentle enough that you can do it the day of a big event,” says Steele. “When I go out to an event, I have one of our estheticians hit me with some oxygen because it instantly makes you look refreshed, glowing and radiant. It's popular with every age group."
OXYGEN BLAST A popular facial add-on at Skin Apeel Day Spa in Boca Raton, Fla., is the Oxygen Blast (10 minutes, $50), which serves as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial tool, therefore making a treatment outcome difference with aging and acne alike. "We use a blast of pneumatic oxygen with a medical grade device that converts and compresses oxygen from the air, saving on the expense and bulk of replacing old-style oxygen tanks,” explains owner Kim Knapp. “Ours combines heavy water with O2 gas. We boost the oxygen effect by adding heavy water rather to the air brush gun attachment." Knapp says this add-on appeals to "everyone." "It's soothing, cooling and hydrating,” she says. “Oxygen seals in the benefits of any skin treatment and with the addition of heavy water and offers an environmental barrier. It's one of our best custom add-ons without a doubt. Clients enjoy their experience, as it gently revives them after being 'spa stoned' and leaves skin dewy and fresh."

MASKS
FOR EVERY TASK Types, Benefits and Ingredients by Susan Daniels
Facial masks have been around for centuries and are widely believed to be the original cosmetic facial treatment. While they have only been gaining popularity in the U.S. over the last decade, they have become enormously popular in a short amount of time and continue to top spa trend lists.

skin facial masks for every task
Spas and estheticians gravitate to masks during facial treatments for many reasons: Masks offer a way to treat a host of skin concerns quickly and effectively. They provide visible results that keep clients engaged and coming back routinely. Masks enhance the efficacy of all products being used during the treatment. They enrich the skin barrier, offering the client more protection from environmental aging agents. Quick and easy to apply, masks offer an immediate upgrade to any spa service. Professional masks are more effective due to a higher concentration of active ingredients.

Retail masks enable you to enhance their treatment and home care routine. Think of it as the client’s insurance policy for treatment they received. Although they come in various application types, many of these masks have similar and overlapping benefits and ingredients so the spa professional can truly pick their potion and tailor the mask to the client’s needs. Here’s a rundown of the choices:
Sheet Mask This mask has long been used in Asia. It made its way into the U.S. around 2010 and its popularity has grown immensely. The sheet mask is often the mask of choice because active ingredients are already infused, making it fool-
proof and cost effective. The main benefits of the sheet mask are the ability to brighten, hydrate, refresh and treat fine lines. Sheet masks are commonly made from a thin cotton sheet infused with hyaluronic acid and peptides for antiaging, and hydration, ginseng and salicylic acid for purifying. Although sheet masks are good for all skin types, they are best used for hydration benefits as they do not deep cleanse or exfoliate. The optimal sheet mask application time is 15-20 minutes.
Silicone Mask Generally made of glycerin, hyaluronic acid, collagen, vitamin C and E, the silicone mask works its magic by hydrating and firming the skin. Its biggest benefits are anti-aging, firming and lightening.
skin facial masks for every task
This mask is known to stimulate cell regeneration and provide deep hydration. It’s often used as a cover over the sheet mask to prevent it from falling off and reduce product evaporation. The silicone mask is also used with cleanser for deep cleaning. For anti-aging the recommended mask application time is 15 minutes. For deep cleansing it’s best to wait 20-30 minutes.
Multi-masking Multi-masking is perfect for those with multiple skin concerns on various parts of the face. Multiple masks are applied simultaneously to different zones. It’s the perfect choice for the client with combination skin. The esthetician can detox the t-zone while hydrating the rest of the face. It’s also good for targeting redness in the cheeks and nourishing other parts of the face. Clock watchers must be aware that one zone may need to be removed quicker than the other based on the type of mask and the skin condition being treated. Application times vary by mask type but range from 10-20 minutes.
formula from escaping via evaporation. They also speed the delivery process of active ingredients by up to 50 percent and decrease the mask time to only 10 minutes because the foil retains heat. Foil masks generally target those looking for softer, smoother, younger looking skin and as such, they often contain hyaluronic acid and collagen. Recommended mask application time is 15 minutes.

to different zones.
Mask Primer This pre-treatment for masks is designed to augment the efficacy of the mask and optimize the skin for maximum product penetration. Generally packaged as a spray, primers truly enhance the mask experience. Primers aid the process by providing a smooth surface for the mask to rest. These multitaskers help post mask too, especially if you have one that’s difficult to remove. After using a primer, the skin is less irritated and dry. Perfect for all skin types, primers are the latest masking prep step you never knew you needed.
Foil Mask Foil masks are the newest type of masks in the U.S. but offer great benefits. Their main function is to prevent the mask

and E to quickly soften, smooth, build and protect the skin barrier, helping the skin to be less sensitive and reactive overall. This instant no-mess mask with anti-aging benefits is ideal for the time sensitive client.
Foaming Mask These fizzing frenzy masks are specifically designed to remove dirt, cleanse pores and exfoliate using bubbles to activate the active oxygen, thus stimulating skin cells. Foaming masks also hydrate the skin without stripping it of natural moisture. Vegetable glycerin is a common ingredient of foaming masks for it’s quick-nourishing benefit. Suggested mask application time is 10-15 minutes.
Hybrid “Serumasks Typically a scrub and mask combined, these hybrid masks are great for brightening and evening the skin tone, combining the properties of a serum and mask in one. Commonly used active ingredients include niacinamide to help reduce dark spots and hyaluronic acid and other anti-aging ingredients to plump the skin. After just 15 minutes the skin is visibly nourished and plump.
Powder Masks All hail powder power! These masks pack a host of antioxidant ingredients to detox, hydrate and stimulate blood flow as well as clay and charcoal (to absorb excess oil). Paste Masks For the more adventurous esthetician, the paste mask requires quick, skilled hands as it must be applied swiftly before it begins to set and transform from a paste to a plaster-like mask. Excellent for all skin types, some have heating properties to push the active ingredients into the skin more readily. Masking application time is 15 minutes. esthetician’s job is never boring. Masks have become an integral part of the spa repertoire, and new mask trends continue to emerge. Masks truly make the esthetician’s job fun, but let’s not forget the work that we do while the client is masking. Mask time gives the esthetician a chance to relax the client with a hand, arm and head massage. And, perhaps even a minute or two to clean up the area and prepare for the next facial.

THERAPEUTIC
BATHS IN THE SPA
ELEMENTS TO REJUVENATE AND DETOXIFY THE BODY
T
here’s nothing like a warm bath to alleviate physical and mental stress, providing therapeutic relief for many ailments. This remedy to everyday living dates back to ancient cultures. Although hydrotherapy methods have been practiced for hundreds of years, many of us are unfamiliar with the concept and how it can benefit our health and overall well-being. With the ever-increasing trend toward health and natural alternatives for complete wellness, many modern spas are offering a variety of treatments in hydrotherapy tubs that deliver a plethora of benefits. Consider the meaning of the word SPA — a mineral spring considered to have healthgiving properties. We all need water
by
to survive; it is an essential part of our daily lives. In spas, the use of water (hydrotherapy) is implemented to revitalize, maintain and restore health. Water works as a natural stimulus on the body. It increases energy, resistance to disease and improves body awareness. This method is a stimulus-reaction-regulation therapy with the intention of activating and strengthening the powers of the body to heal itself. The addition of specific plant and herbal essential oils to a warm bath treatment can tremendously boost the experience. Not only do essential oils enhance the experience through aromatherapy, but soaking directly in them, which allows for skin absorption, can target everyday ailments through their specific healing properties.

BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF BATHS Detoxification/Water Retention Reduction Sweating is the body’s natural way of detoxifying and extracting toxins from the skin. Soaking in warm or hot water effectively aids the body in this natural process of cleansing. Adding a mineral bath salt such as sea salt, Himalayan or Epsom to a bath takes detoxification to another level! The high magnesium content allows it to help draw excess fluid out from the body, decreasing water retention and helping one feel less puffy. Adding detoxifying oil such as Juniper, mandarin or tea tree can also help increase circulation to further cleanse the body and draw toxins out.

helps fight stress and acts as a natural mood-booster. Enhance the bath with orange essential oil, which helps to calm nervous tension, quiet the mind and improve mood (not to mention smells incredible). Alternatively, lavender essential oil is a solid remedy for stress relief.
Boost immunity
Alleviates skin conditions
Soaking the body increases circulation, and as the blood flow is moved throughout the body it helps to strengthen the immune system. Add pure eucalyptus essential oil into a mineral salt bath to further boost immunity or help aid the symptoms of an existing cold, such as sniffles or congestion. The strong aroma of eucalyptus opens the airways and nasal passages and has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties to protect against sickness. Mineral salt helps shorten the duration of a cold as the body absorbs it, due to its high content of trace minerals such as magnesium and zinc.
Soaking the body can actually be beneficial for skin ailments; common conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, dry, flaking skin or rashes can be soothed while soaking in a tub! Bathing in Epsom salts is helpful with providing hydrating relief for itchy conditions. Additionally, oils that are high in essential fatty acids, such as sweet almond oil or evening primrose oil, can be added to help reduce skin inflammation and provide ultimate hydration for the skin. Lavender essential oil is particularly calming for itchy skin, rashes and even bug bites.
Decreases stress A warm bath goes hand in hand with stress relief, as it can effectively reduce blood pressure caused by stress. In addition, the body naturally releases endorphins while it soaks, which

Always consider the bath itself as a standalone treatment. Offering a bath soak in the spa creates a very time effective and profitable service that allows your client to experience the feeling of bringing their body into balance. Of course, clients can book other treatments to further enhance or magnify the therapeutic effects. A body exfoliation service prior to the bath is an excellent way for the client to stimulate their
2:24 PM
circulation system and get the most out of their soak. This can be accomplished through a salt or sugar scrub, or the ageold technique of body brushing. Other options include a massage before or after the bath treatment. Alternatively, the bath can be sold as an add-on to these treatments. Whether the bath is used with other treatments or experienced as a standalone mind altering experience, clients are happy and the spa benefits in revenue and builds a solid client base.
Bath time protocol The ideal water temperature of the spa bath is 96 to 98 degrees Fahrenheit. After the bath (which should last approximately 15-20 minutes), a cool water rinse helps the body’s circulation return to normal. This rinse may be particularly beneficial for those experiencing stress in the legs. Skin should then be blotted dry, followed by the application of a body oil, lotion or cream to the slightly damp skin to help seal in moisture and prevent dehydration. The ritual should be completed with 15 to 30 minutes of rest time for the client.
CHOOSING YOUR TUB
A standard size soaking tub holds approximately 40 gallons. Ideally, the tub should be non-jetted, as this allows for more flexibility with additives, the key to enhancing the experience. Also, adding bath additives to a jetted tub can eat away at the tubing over time, and they are very hard to clean well enough to prevent this from happening. Forgoing a tub with jets saves you from this cleaning nightmare. Make sure to purchase a tub that has a good warranty on finish. Prices for a soaking tub are approximately $1,200 to $1,500.

LED
TOPICALS INTENSIFYING THE BENEFITS OF INGREDIENTS ON SKIN by Amy Gardner
W
hat do you think of when you hear the term “LED light therapy”? Most skin care professionals answer with two things: wrinkle reduction and acne treatment. LED can indeed effectively address these issues; however, the benefits have a much more fundamental and significantly wider reach, especially when LED is used with topical products that are formulated to work toward the same goals. Before delving into this topic, we must first address how LED works.
ILLUMINATION - LOOKING BEYOND THE SURFACE To fully appreciate the benefits associated with any treatment, it’s important to understand what’s happening on a cellular level to generate visible change. This understanding not only helps us to identify benefits, it also provides guidance on what types of treatments and ingredients work well together to achieve results. It’s well known that when certain therapeutic wavelengths

of light at appropriate intensities are directed at the skin, the body’s cells have the ability to absorb light energy and convert it to fuel. This fuel is called ATP, or adenosine triphosphate. ATP is to the body what gasoline is to a car. Without it, nobody gets anywhere. The problem is that as we age, we become less and less efficient at producing ATP from the metabolism of foods. For this reason, a supplemental cellular energy source (like LED) is very useful.
CELEBRATING THE CELL Most of us don’t think about what our cells do on a moment-to-moment basis. If we did, we’d have a much greater appreciation for their intricate and miraculous work. Here are just some of the things our cells are responsible for: Breaking foods down into nutrients Generating proteins, enzymes, growth factors and inflammator y mediators Eliminating waste Cell proliferation (mitosis) Sending out chemical messengers to regulate human processes like muscle contraction, signal transfer in nerves, gene expression, etc. Given these complicated tasks, it’s easy to understand why an abundant fuel supply is necessary for optimal physiological performance, including that of the skin. As we’ve learned more about the mechanism of action and cascading effects of LED, our thought process on how to use it has shifted. We now know without question that it’s not only a wrinkle reducer and acne treatment, it’s also a powerful resource for maintaining overall skin health in a more holistic manner.
INFLAMMATION UNDERCOVER Any discussion about the benefits of LED would be incomplete without

including the topic of inflammation. The fact that red and infrared wavelengths (630 – 940 nm) are so effective at reducing inflammation makes it a useful tool for post-procedure healing, and also offers further explanation as to its effectiveness in the area of age management. Additionally, it’s now well known that a great many factors including free radical exposure, glycation and even barrier damage trigger an inflammatory process that’s not always visible on the surface of the skin. Chemicals released during this process are damaging to cell structures, membranes and DNA, ultimately contributing to fine lines and wrinkles, laxity, hyperpigmentation and even degenerative disease. For this reason, it’s important to do what we can to keep chronic, low-grade inflammation at bay.
Manufacturers’ instructions vary, but generally speaking, using LED two to three times per week for roughly 20 minutes per treatment is an effective and comprehensive way to do so. When used along with topical ingredients known to reduce inflammation, the benefits are even greater.
POST-PROCEDURE PAIN & HEALING Because it’s so effective at reducing inflammation, this is another example of expanded uses for LED in the field of esthetics. LED is widely used postprocedure for microneedling, laser, injections and even surgery. Additional post-procedure benefits include tissue regeneration, pain relief, diminished bruising and reduced redness and swelling. LED has become significantly

spa led & topicals more popular as practitioners have come to recognize it as an effective and non-invasive way to increase patient comfort and reduce downtime from work and other activities after treatments that require healing.
LED & TOPICALS – AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH Most of the benefits associated with LED can be attributed to increased cellular energy, blood vessel dilation as a result of additional nitric oxide bioavailability, and modulation of numerous growth factors and inflammatory mediators. Topicals used with LED must help support and intensify these benefits. The direct use of any ingredient that is known to contribute to irritation, dryness or inflammation should be avoided during LED treatment. Formulations of some ingredients vary, such as with vitamin C and A. In these cases, it’s recommended to choose less aggressive forms of these ingredients for maximum benefit and reduced possibility of irritation. As with

care products into much needed fuel our cells use for maturation, growth and healthy functioning.” She goes on to explain, “LED also generates a mild thermal effect in the tissues, contributing to more optimal ingredient absorption, and a more efficient intracellular and trans-cellular ingredient diffusion as warmth causes lipid bilayers to ‘loosen’ and lipidic components of our cellular membranes to become more receptive and bind more easily to similar structures in our products. Utilizing LED together with skin care products or using them to treat the skin before the products are applied increases skin’s permeability and receptiveness to some of the most valuable ingredients for aging, acne, sensitivities and other major skin concerns.” It has become clear that the future of skin care, like wellness, is necessarily shifting toward a more holistic and

BEHIND THE SPA DOOR Tiffany Abercrombie
with Director of Mokara Salon and Spa in Dallas, Texas
Training an ideal staff while maintaining a leadership role
Concept How would you define the concept of your spa? The goal of Mokara is to create a sanctuary that gives guests a reason to return. We value every relationship. We provide attentive service in a relaxing, yet refined atmosphere. Our brand personality is intimate, fine-tuned, inviting, restorative, timeless and sophisticated.
What are your most popular treatments? Our most popular spa treatments are the Mokara Aromatherapy Massage, the Ultimate Anti-Aging Facial, the Peppermint Energizing Pedicure and the Special Occasion Hair Design.
Facility How many treatment rooms and other amenities do you have? Our spa and salon is located adjacent to the hotel. We have seven treatment rooms, including a wet room and couples retreat. We also pride ourselves on being a full service salon with 10 salon chairs. Our water amenities such as the Jacuzzi and sauna are located on the canal level of the hotel in our Fitness Center.
Leadership Role What daily challenges do you encounter in your position? One of my biggest daily challenges is to continuously balance the needs of my clients as well as the needs of my associates. On top of that, I also have to sustain my daily operational responsibilities as the spa owner. Synergy is very important!
How do you manage stress that work brings into your life? Making sure that I have “me” time incorporated into my weekly routine is a must. I love to work out and spend time with friends and family to help ease the week’s stress. Also, a little retail therapy does me good!
What takes most of your time every day? Administrative duties and daily responsibilities are definitely time consuming, however I don’t allow them to interfere with the ongoing training and coaching of my team to provide the highest level of guest service.

Team Building How many employees do you have and what are their specialties? I have a total of 25 employees: six massage therapists, three estheticians, four nail technicians, 10 salon stylists and two shampoo technicians.
What is your hiring process? I partner with our recruiting director to identify and retain high potential associates that are imperative to our success. Every associate is a valued member of our team. After an initial phone interview, I follow up with a face-to-face meet and greet of the potential employee. I then evaluate the candidates’ technical level of experience. Technical skills are important, but passion and personality are a must! My employees HAVE to love what they do!
How do you train your staff? For new team members, I collaborate with my spa manager to ensure we schedule one-on-one time with them. They are then partnered with a tenured provider in their technical department. We train them on product knowledge and our signature treatments for at least two weeks. Before I put them on the spa schedule, I have them trial with our internal team members for various technical services. These team members then complete evaluation forms, which I use to follow up with our new team member regarding their strengths and specific areas of focus. For both our new and experienced team members, I schedule what we call “Moments of Service” evaluations as needed on a monthly basis. These evaluations consist of education refinement and feedback from customer reviews.
How do you evaluate employees? Once an associate completes their orientation and on-boarding training, we conduct a 90-day review. Their guest retention rate, revenue and retail sales and customer feedback reports are key
performance indicators. I evaluate my team daily, weekly and monthly based on their tenure. What makes an employee stand out is having a “can do” attitude with an upbeat and positive outlook; going above and beyond just their day-to-day job duties.
marketing and partnering with neighboring venues such as country clubs, other hotels and luxury home communities. Our internal marketing involves consistent website updating, monthly and seasonal email blasts and printed flyers and advertisements for various tradeshows we participate in.
How do you keep your employees happy and incentivized?
Exceptional Client Care
I recognize my top retail and sales performer with a gift card in our monthly meeting. I also have monthly competitive incentives, team outings and celebrations for special occasions, such as birthdays and holidays.
Retail What are your retail goals? I have a monthly spa retail goal of 11 percent, which we regularly meet or exceed. My goal for the year 2017 is to achieve at least 15 percent monthly.
How do you keep clients loyal and consistent? We relate to each guest and personalize each experience to suit his or her specific needs. We strive to not only make an impression, but to follow up with each of our clients on a regular basis to make sure our treatments have properly benefited them. We also host quarterly events at the spa for our guests to win drawings, prizes and discounted services.
What incentives do you have for your staff to reach these goals? We have a tiered commission retail scale. The more you sell, the more you make. As recognition, we offer free spa services and gift cards, and play retail games with spa vendor representatives for gratis products to help us reach our monthly goals.
Where is the retail area located? Our retail is located in the entrance of our spa lobby because this is the area that guests see when they enter and exit the spa. Our spa concierges are trained to educate and assist our guests with general product knowledge and are a great support to the spa team when closing sales.

business mother's day marketing
“People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”
It all starts with planning. The sad truth is that a lack of planning is one of the most costly mistakes spa professionals make. They don’t plan far enough in advance to maximize their potential. This oversight is not intentional — most professionals wear many hats and are pulled in a number of different directions on any given day. They want to plan but they run out of time, then go into reactive mode. Unfortunately the result is that they don’t reach the revenue goals they desire. Don’t let that happen to you! Implement the following strategies to increase your gift card sales and special holiday promotions!
1
2
64
Marketing Calendar. Start by creating a Marketing Calendar. Outline all special days and work 45 to 60 days in advance. This helps you with the planning process and gets your promotions out in a timely manner. Example: Let’s say Mother’s Day is on May 14th. You should have everything ready to launch by April 14th. That means you need to start planning by April 1st. This schedule allows plenty of time to come up with great promotions and campaigns. It provides a full 30 days of selling your promotion to maximize your efforts.
3 4
Preparing Your Promotions. The best way to plan and prepare your promotions is with your spa team. This gives you an opportunity to engage them, give input and team buy-in. This action gets the team excited and helps them sell more. Include a theme when planning your gift card and promotion strategies.

5
Vendor Relations. Ask your vendors about their offers and annual promotions. This helps you include a special gift with purchase items and adds retail revenue opportunities to your gift card sales and promotions. Ask them for complimentary items to pass on to your clients as an added value.
Don’t Give Away the Farm. A promotion is not an occasion for deep discounts. It can be a special experience that you don’t normally offer on your menu. This allows you to charge what you want without deep discounting. You can include multiple treatments, retail sales, gift card, etc. Create three different price points (high, medium and low) to capture a wide range of your market.
Make it Festive and Noticeable. Decorate your spa. Set up an area to feature your Mother’s Day promotion. Place it in a high traffic area so everyone sees it. Create a flyer and place it in a picture frame, or use an electronic frame to feature it. Show the products, the gift card, the treatment, etc. The offer should be easy for everyone to understand. It should look so amazing that they can’t resist. Use the theme to decorate your spa.

the actual day of the holiday. Offer added value for the rest of the days leading up to the actual date. This gives you more opportunities to maximize your revenue.
Always run your campaign for a full 30 days. Make it worth your time.
In-spa Marketing. In-spa marketing is a very economical way to promote your specials. You can do simple things like creating buttons for the team to wear, with an encouraging statement like, “Give Your

Mom a Special Gift! Ask Me How!” It starts a conversation so the team member can tell the client about your special. You can place posters, flyers, video loops and banners on your display station. When you combine all these marketing strategies with scripts the team can use to promote your specials, you reach your goals easily.

External Marketing. To maximize your success, do external marketing to bring greater awareness to your promotions. Update your website, create a postcard, send an email blast. Focus on social media such as: Facebook post and ad, pictures for Pinterest, LinkedIn post, Instagram! Write about it in your newsletter. You may also want to do a direct mail piece, a YouTube video and more... Create opportunities for people to share your post, spread the news about your promotions and make it viral.
Promote Your Campaign to New Consumers. Don’t just market to your database! Reach out to new consumers via Facebook Marketing. Create an ad to run on Facebook to reach out to non-clients, generate new gift card sales and new clients.
Lasting Promotions. When promoting days such as Mothers’ day, Valentine’s Day and so on, the last thing you want is to limit sale opportunities for just that actual day. Your campaign should include an offer to use up to 30 days prior to the actual day. Charge a premium for

Online and Offline Sales. Don’t limit your sales for in-spa only. There are great opportunities with online sales. Create a landing page on your website for people to view your Mother’s Day offer and give them the ability to buy it online. If you don’t know how to create landing pages, you can reach out for help from marketing companies. Online sales can be huge when done properly.
Guest Experience and Touch Points. When you create special promotions for Mother’s Day, it is important to have a special touch point to enhance the experience and get them to say “WOW”. Go beyond the norm to develop protocols the team can follow to impress your guests and maximize revenue opportunities. Make sure you train your team on the experience.
Inform and Train Your Team. It takes a team effort to reach your goals. Your team must be informed and trained. Set goals as to how many promotions you need to sell and what revenue you would like to reach. Measure it daily — do NOT wait until the end of the month when it is too late.

DRYNESS Low humidity and the cold, windy weather of winter promote itchy, dry, irritated skin. Additionally, exposure to indoor heaters and long, hot showers strip away skin’s protective outer layer of moisture. The extreme temperature changes from going between indoors and outdoors during the winter also leads to dryness, free radical damage and inflammation of the skin. By the time the warmer weather rolls around, lack of moisture from these winter elements has dampened the skin’s glow.

plication. The service begins with the client lying face down, and the therapist performs a dry brushing of the entire back of the body in the direction of the lymph flow with long, smooth movements. A blueberry scrub containing raw sugar cane, blueberry and sweet almond oil is then applied to the entire back of the body, with special emphasis on elbows and feet. Any remaining scrub that does not completely dissolve is removed with hot towels, and client is patted dry. This is followed by the application of a gel-like oil containing blueberry, raspberry, grape seed extract, green and black tea. The client turns over, and the same process — dry brushing, scrub and oil application — is now performed on the front of the body, with special emphasis on the knees and feet. The client is then wrapped in layers including a mylar thermal blanket and sheets, which is left on for 10 to 20 minutes, during
which time clients are treated to a scalp and head massage. After being unwrapped, clients shower (if performed in dry room, wrap is removed with towels). The therapist then massages a hydrating lotion of shea butter, blueberry juice and mica, leaving skin soft, supple and glowing. (50 minutes, $135)

DULL COMPLEXION
CELLULITE
The winter holiday season is fun, but let’s face it — these colder months are a time of overindulgence and celebration that also bring increased levels of stress, alcohol intake and a sugar-heavy diet lacking in vitamins and antioxidants. This, combined with more time spent indoors and out of the sun, leads to lackluster skin all over the body at the start of summer.
Over the course of the winter, toxins can build up in fat cells, due in part to poor dietary choices common during winter and decreased circulation from sedentary lifestyles. At this time of year, clients are seeking a treatment to zap this unsightly lumpiness right away before showing more skin and enhancing their tone with bronzing and contouring services.

Awakening Coffee Body Scrub Treatment The Pampered Escape Spa Houston, Texas
This treatment takes place on a massage table with a disposable sheet. It begins with five minutes of dry brushing from the legs up to the heart, which promotes detoxification through lymphatic drainage and improved vascular blood circulation. The dry brushing also helps with muscle tone and reduces the appearance of cellulite by eliminating toxins stored in fat cells, so fat is deposited more evenly under the skin for a smoother appearance. Next, the therapist buffs the skin with a handmade coffee scrub of coffee extract, glycerin, sugar and coconut oil to reveal smooth new glowing skin. The client’s body is then layered with warm towels and any remains of the coffee scrub that were not absorbed
Beauty, luxury and well-being meet in perfect harmony in this skin rejuvenating head-to-toe treatment, which takes place in a wet room with a horizontal overhead shower above the massage table. It begins with a full body exfoliation using a sugar scrub containing geranium and rose petals. The foaming scrub lasts approximately 20 minutes and channels the fourth chakra, also known as the heart chakra, which rules the lymphatic system. The client is then rinsed with the overhead shower. The therapist follows by massaging a hydrating wrap made of shea butter infused with wildflowers, herbs and banana leaves into the client’s body for approximately five minutes. No foil or plastic is applied on top of this natural treatment; the ingredients alone are left on the body to work their magic for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the therapist performs lifting facial point therapy on the client, using trigger points on the face to increase relaxation, leaving them with a radiant aura, revitalized mind and soft, glowing skin. The wrap is then removed and the therapist concludes the treatment with a final application of shea butter. (60 minutes, $119)

PREMATURE AGING
Red Flower Nature Antioxidizing Facial Body by Brooklyn, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Winter can wreak havoc on tender, aging skin, causing significant dryness and even cracking. After prolonged exposure to wind, chafing can lead to signs of premature aging. Hot showers and increased artificial heat exposure also serve to strip away moisture.
This six-part facial includes a deep cleansing of the face to remove all makeup and excess oil, a detoxifying and exfoliating scrub to eliminate dead skin cells, a balancing toner to lay a foundation for the deep hydration mask that follows, a neck and shoulder mas-

sage while the mask is hydrating the skin, and concluding with the removal of the mask and the application of a serum specifically selected for the client’s skin. This health-boosting treatment reduces the appearance of fine lines, relaxes facial tension, uplifts and tones the facial muscles, increases blood and lymphatic circulation and delivers a surge of deep hydration to leave skin healthy, balanced and rejuvenated. (Weekday 60 minutes, $124/ Weekend, 60 minutes, $134)
DRY SCALP, BRITTLE HAIR The effect of weather dryness on the skin applies to the scalp as well, which is often forgotten until the client experiences dryness, itchiness and flaking in the scalp. This in turn can lead to damage of the hair, as the roots of the hair are also under the skin and cannot receive any nourishment that the scalp is lacking. This is compounded by a tendency to scratch the irritated area, which can cause the hair to break and even fall out.

Radiant Renewal Face & Scalp Treatment Bodhi Massage & Wellness Center San Diego, Calif. This 10-step treatment is a full refresher from the neck up. A hot towel is placed on the client’s face, and a gentle facial massage is performed over the towel. The therapist then provides a foaming, exfoliating deep cleanse to rid the skin of any excess residue. This is followed by the application of a toner spray to balance the skin’s oil levels. A nutrient-packed clay mask is then applied to the face to purge impurities. While the mask is in place, the therapist per-
forms a deep, soothing scalp and neck massage with a fingertip-sized amount of rosemary oil. The oil is left in the hair, so clients are advised they may leave with messy hair after receiving this treatment. After the scalp massage, the clay mask is removed with a toner, followed up with a lip scrub and moisturizer. An equalizing toner is applied to the skin one last time, followed by an eye cream treatment to reduce any signs of dark circles, and concluding with a gentle facial massage to completely relax the client and plump skin. This treatment leaves both the client’s face and scalp feeling refreshed, clean and vibrant. (45 minutes, $60)

Your ally to creating that extra radiance by Adriana Van de Camp
From the moment we are born, our skin serves as a reliable barrier between our inner and outer worlds. A woman’s complexion is intimately connected to her feelings of selfconfidence and power — it’s the “face” she shows to the world. That said, who wouldn’t want natural, glowing skin to flaunt?

Sun Kissed Looks guide
Similar to the phrase “whatever comes up must come down,” the phrase “whatever goes in must come out” directly applies to the skin. A beautiful and truly natural glow originates from the inside out and is directly affected by aspects of a person’s overall wellness and health. Nurturing this natural glow is the essential first step to creating overall skin radiance… and spas are the perfect source! Although there are hundreds of ways spa professionals can create beautiful flawless skin, there are a few unique practices that a spa can use to help their clients achieve that pure, natural glow that radiates from within. These concepts serve as valuable tools to support the benefits of your services,

by giving clients that special radiance that can only come from the inside out. Additionally, the visible differences from these techniques can be felt and seen immediately, which will help your client’s experience with you stand out in their mind, serving as the ultimate hook that brings them back to renew that authentic glow again and again!
Breath work Proper breath work is one simple and natural way to address skin issues such as acne, dark spots and pigmentation. When we breathe better, it improves blood circulation throughout the whole body, resulting in better blood flow to the skin and a healthy, natural glow.
Spas can easily support this technique by correctly educating their clients on the basics of proper breathing. To enhance the experience and magnify the effects of any of your services in the spa, implement the following two-minute technique at the start and end of the protocol: Have your client sit in a comfortable, upright position and breathe in deep, making sure the muscles of the chest and neck are loose, allowing air to gather. Guide them in blowing all the air out of their lungs, pushing and squeezing it out with their stomach muscles. When they have nothing left, encourage them to inhale deeply

through the nose, expanding the belly first, not the chest. Have them hold the breath at the top of the inhale for seven seconds before releasing the breath slowly through the mouth, controlling the exhale for about eight to 10 seconds. Repeat this three times. This specific type of deep, slow and conscious breathing helps oxygenate the entire body through the circulatory system and results in a more naturally radiant complexion. *See our full article on breath work in the spa, "The Wind of Life", on page 105 of our July 2014 edition!
Facial Yoga Many of the undesirable changes that occur in our skin that we assume are unavoidable can actually be reversed through proper exercise — including exercise on the face! Below are several common facial complications clients experience and how you can solve them in your spa with facial yoga.
Lift and Tone Neck. Looking straight
ahead, place your fingertips on the top of your client’s neck and pull the skin down as they tilt the head back. Bring head back down and repeat twice. Then, have your client extend their lower lip out as far as possible, place your fingers on their collarbone as they point their chin upward, pulling the corners of the mouth down. Hold for four deep breaths.
Collagen Drinks Collagen is a fibrous protein that is a key component of our skin — it helps keep the dermis youthful and resilient as well as lubricates our joints and aids in digestion. Our natural collagen level breaks down once we reach our mid20s, so encouraging your clients to indulge in collagen drinks to restore that natural production is crucial to keep skin all over the body glowing. Collagen is
jam-packed with “nonessential” amino acids that provide the body’s entire system with a natural-collagen kick-start and a pure, natural glow. Get your clients sipping by adding a unique complementary element to your spa services — collagen drinks! These supportive nutrient-packed beverages will support your clients’ skin from the inside out, and expand your retail revenue potential. Give your clients a free taste of this beauty treat as a complimentary beverage with any facial and explain the benefits of the nutrient so they understand how a daily dose will support their anti-aging goals. Offer collagen drink mixes and other nutricosmetics as part of your retail lineup, creating a golden opportunity for your clients’ skin and YOUR bottom line.
Add this extra layer of benefits to your facial services by completing each treatment with two minutes of the following techniques. Your clients will be amazed at the difference!
Diminish Eye Wrinkles. Put two
middle fingers together between the eyebrows and apply pressure to the outer corners of eyes with index fingers. Have the client look up and start to move the lower eyelids upward. Relax and repeat six times. To finish, squeeze eyes shut for 10 seconds, then relax.
Smile Smoother. Instruct your client
to hide their teeth with their lips and make an “O” with the mouth. Instruct them to smile as widely as they can while keeping the teeth hidden. Repeat six times. Next, hold the smile shape and place one index finger on the chin. Have the client begin to move their jaw up and down as you tilt their head back. Relax and repeat twice.

Nutrition Good nutrition is a fundamental building block of healthy, glowing skin. The recipe for complexion perfection starts with a well-rounded diet of healthy fats, sufficient protein and lots of antioxidant-packed fruits and veggies. Without proper nutrition, your services will not reap the results the client seeks. Consider partnering with a nutritionist to encourage healthy dietary habits in your clients. tummy and overall improvement of the skin’s appearance. To perform an abdominal massage on a client, have them lie on their back on a firm table with their belly exposed. Rub your hands together firmly for about 15 seconds until they feel very warm. Place one hand flat on the belly button and begin rubbing in small circles, gradually widening the circles using firm, but not painful, pressure. Each circle should take about two seconds. Perform this action for two to five minutes (40-50 circles) and be sure to keep the stomach warm during the exercise.

Treat your clients to the full complexion boosting benefits of massage by incorporating a five-minute face massage at the end of a full body massage, and offer a longer facial massage treatment as a 15-minute add-on option to any service.
The abdominal massage can be incorporated at the end a full body massage. Clients will feel the difference immediately, and be eager to experience the pressure relief and improved tummy tone again!
Massage (face and body) A full body massage allows the blood and energy in the body to flow to the face, giving it a lifted and brightened appearance. Applying massage to pressure points on the face or body releases tension. In addition to relieving stagnated energy, it also lifts and firms the skin. This technique is effective on any area of the body as well as the eye sockets, below the cheekbones, the temples and the chin area. When massaging a client’s face, always work against the expression lines. For example, wrinkles appear horizontally on the forehead and on bridge of

Sculpt Your Client’s Physique and Confidence by Kristina Mazzenga
There is no doubt that a layer of self-tan all over the body provides a golden glow and a layer of confidence. Self-tanner can be used to smooth out skin tone, cover blemishes and even hide unwanted veins. Spas in the 21st century are taking this well-known remedy to new heights with the latest method to obtain a perfectly toned bod and all-over flawless skin — spray contouring!

Even celebrities who are idolized for their glamorous looks are getting that extra boost from contouring tanning services to fake a slimmer, more toned overall appearance. Stand out from traditional tanning services by offering your clients this innovative twist on your tanning services and stay booked all summer long! A basic spray tan is a great start, but all-over color of the same shade can sometimes minimize or even “flatten” muscle tone and natural angles of the body. Spray contouring can go as far as to enhance muscle tone, enrich cheekbones and slim the body, all in a natural and believable way. The process of contouring, highlighting and shading specific areas of the skin using sunless tanner gives the body a “third dimension” for a longer, leaner, more fit appearance. Be sure to encourage your clients to shave, exfoliate and moisturize the night before their appointment. This ensures that their tan will be smooth, even and flawless. Any area of the body can be contoured to minimize flaws and create the illusion of curves in all the right places, but here are a few specific contouring techniques to meet the body’s most bronze-hungry regions.
• Toned Butt: First, have the client bend at their knees and waist to lift the butt up and out. This is to ensure you do not create a crease underneath the butt cheeks. Next, with dark bronze tanning spray, lightly spray a curved line under each cheek; this makes a shadow and gives the bum a more lifted and toned look. Then, spray a half circle (think left and right parentheses) on each side of the butt to disguise any trouble spots and to make the bottom appear slimmer.

• Luscious Legs:
• Natural Cleavage:
After applying a base tan to the legs, highlight and outline the muscles in the thighs. This darkens the muscle in the quadriceps, making the thighs appear toned and slim. As you spray, have the client bend their knees slightly to assure no creases are left untouched. To contour the hamstring, have the client turn one leg out and bend their knees slightly as you spray a line down the inside of each thigh. Echo this process on the outside of the thigh as well, which will make the upper leg appear thinner overall while covering the appearance of cellulite. Repeat this process on the lower leg. When highlighting the calf muscle, have the client rise on their tippy toes to make sure you are truly accentuating the muscle. The client’s legs will look toned and fit, even without the help of high heels.
Better (and more comfortable) than a push-up bra, you can easily create the illusion of cleavage along the natural contours of the chest. Using the bronzing spray, spray a half-circle in line with the curvature of the top of each breast. Then, use a makeup sponge wedge to accentuate the inner “V” of the cleavage, which creates the appearance of a fuller chest. This particular technique is easier if the client is topless, but if they are more comfortable wearing a bathing suit, be sure to protect the fabric of the suit with paper towels or a tanning mitt as you spray the formula.
Extra Tip!
If a client has cellulite on their thighs, use a darker shade of bronze on those specific areas to easily cover it up!
• Toned Arms: Have the client hold their arms out at a 90-degree angle. Begin spraying the inner part of their triceps to give them a more chiseled look. Then, starting at the back of the shoulder and curving around the front of the biceps, follow the natural muscle curvature of the arm and create a question mark-like shape to give the arm an elongated, defined
Sun Kissed Looks guide
look. Also, because the sun is always shining on the body from above, it is more natural to have more color on the shoulders. Have the client lean forward as you spray an additional layer on the top of the shoulders, creating a more natural looking tan. Finish by spraying a straight line down the center of the forearm. If you over-sprayed in any area, use a tanning mitt to pat and blend the color into the skin.
• Tummy Tuck: To create the appearance of a tight and toned stomach, start by spraying a line starting from the sternum all the way down to just past the belly button. Then, go back and work the spray mist horizontally along the waistline to make it appear slimmer. To create the illusion of abs, use a dark tone and create a half-circle along each side of the tummy, kind of like parentheses around
the abs. This brings focus to the inner stomach area. Then, with the spray, trace the natural curves of abdominal line to create a slimming effect.
DON’T:
Try to create ab-looking lines on your own because it will not look natural. Use the guidelines of the client’s natural bodylines, simply enhancing the lines they already have so it does not look fake. Again, buff with the mitt if you over-spray.
• Finishing Touches: For a perfectly tanned face, have the client hold their breath, press their lips together and gently close their eyes as you evenly spray their face for a completely natural tan.
• Maintenance: Skin naturally sheds over five to 10 days, so spray tans won’t last longer
than that. During the summertime, skin sheds quicker because we are sweating and swimming more often. To help your clients maintain their spray tan, they can exfoliate the skin every couple days with a very gentle body polisher. Cocoa butter and coconut oil are great moisturizing products that do not deplete the life of the tan.

UNEXPECTED BEAUTY BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN ELIXIR FOR THE SKIN
F
or thousands of years the people of the Mediterranean have understood the life giving benefits of the olive tree and its precious fruit, the olive. Native to Asia Minor, it then spread to Iran, Syria and Palestine, making its way down to the Mediterranean basin more than 6,000 years ago. The magnificent olive tree is among the oldest known cultivated trees in the world, and can bear fruit at 1,000 years old. Olive oil has been used for religious rituals, medicinal purposes, food, perfumes and skin care for thousands of years by the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. It may have even been the source of wealth of the Minoan Kingdom. The ancient Greek poet Homer coined it “liquid gold, and thousands of years later, we
still revere it as one of nature's most treasured gifts. So what goodness is hiding inside these little gems called olives, and how can skin and beauty benefit from it? Approximately 24 percent of olive oil is made up of saturated fats, omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. The remaining 76 percent is a monounsaturated fat called oleic acid or omega 9 fatty acid. Oleic acid has been shown to reduce blood pressure, increase fat burning to help with weight loss and protect cells from free radical damage. Olive oil may even prevent type 2 diabetes, reduce inflammation in the digestive tract and increase brain myelin, the fatty tissue that surrounds nerve cells and is essential for proper functioning of the nervous system.

o&w gold treasure: olive oil + skin
O
live oil is also packed with powerful polyphenol antioxidant properties. The most notable polyphenol found in olive oil is Hydroxytyrosol, one of the most powerful antioxidants discovered on the planet. This little powerhouse is being praised for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and cardiovascular benefits. It is clear that ingesting olive oil has brilliant health benefits for the body, now let’s explore the topical benefits of this natural treasure.
Beautifies Skin
So many of the vitamins, minerals and fatty acids the skin needs and craves are found in olive oil. The molecular structure of olive oil is closely matched with skin’s natural sebum, so when it is applied topically, it is recognized by skin, and it deeply penetrates the skin’s lipid layer to lock in moisture. Skin is left feeling hydrated and velvety soft, but not greasy, giving the skin’s surface a lasting, dewy glow. The antioxidant properties found in olive oil aid in the reduction of fine lines and the production of collagen. In addition, vitamins E and K work to repair and renew free radical damaged skin, caused by overexposure to harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, air pollution and other modern-day environmental hazards. These nutrients are naturally capable of stimulating cells and restoring skin to a firmer, smoother, healthier complexion. 94

As a result, when olive oil is used on the skin, it delivers a youthful, radiant glow and a texture that is soft and hydrated.
Facial Cleanser
Oil dissolves oil. The skin naturally creates its own oil called sebum. Dirt and bacteria can get trapped in this sebum and be pulled deep into the pores. When harsh cleansers are used to wash the face, they can cause an overproduction of sebum, which is simply the skin’s effort to replace the valuable barrier that was taken away. When cleansing with oil, dirty oil is replaced with beneficial oil, leaving skin clean, radiant, soft and glowing. Omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids are crucial to the wellness of skin cells. This is due to their ability to create a barrier on the surface of the skin, which acts as a passageway, letting important nutrients enter while allowing waste and impurities to exit.
Reduces Scars and Stretch Marks
Because olive oil is high in vitamin E, it is a natural go-to for fading a scar or saying good-bye to pesky stretch marks. Vitamin E stimulates the formation of collagen, which improves skin texture, strength and elasticity. Applying straight vitamin E directly to the skin can cause irritation such as inflammation or itching. However, using olive oil with nature’s perfect balance of vitamin E is safe and effective.
Scalp and Hair
Olive oil can bring moisture back to dry, over treated and lackluster locks in numerous ways. It can be added into a hot oil deep conditioning treatment, or simply added into the palms of hands and distributed throughout your client’s hair to smooth out rough ends for a brilliant shine. Olive oil can also be massaged directly into the scalp to help remove built up sebum, stimulate circulation of hair follicles, and rid hair of dandruff. An exciting bonus is that all the benefits olive oil provides to hair on the head also work on lashes and brows!
Softens Cuticles
Keeping the cuticles soft on the hands and feet is important, because cracked and split cuticles can allow bacteria and fungus to get under the nail. This is a very difficult fungus to get rid of, and olive oil can keep it at bay with the help of these awesome antioxidants and their anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Vitamin E is particularly helpful here, as it promotes nail growth as well. The opportunities to benefit from olive oil are endless! Help your clients reap the benefits of one of Mother Nature’s most valuable gifts as you slather it on their skin and encourage them to eat it up!

Let's get DIRTY MESSY SPA TREATMENTS‌ WHO KNEW? by Carrie Borzillo
BEAUTY SEEKERS
have been turning to the ground for centuries. Cleopatra kept her skin beautiful with clay masks. Mud and sea salt have been popular around the world for ages. Today, spas are digging up more pieces of the Earth to beautify and cleanse their clients, ranging from quartz sand to bark to creek water and other natural elements.

SOUND & SAND MASSAGE Auberge Beach Residences & Spa Fort Lauderdale Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 60 minutes, $175 Remember when you were little and you’d bury yourself up to your neck in sand at the beach? It made you feel warm, relaxed and cozy. This treatment is just like that. “The owner grew up playing in sand and water and wanted to bring the feel and sound of the ocean into the spa concept,” says Tracy Lee, owner of TLEE Spas, which created Auberge’s spa. The client is wrapped in a lightweight sheet from the neck down and lies on a massage table filled with quartz sand underneath and a thin layer of the sand on top. “Quartz is a semi-precious stone that has healing properties,” says Lee.
“It’s said to help keep you centered and strengthens your ability to be a loving person and enhance your ability to enjoy life. The table itself heats the sand and warms the client to the core. It’s profoundly relaxing and meditative.” For the sound element, the client is given a headset with multi-layered audio signals. “They act together to create a resonance that affects your brain waves and balances out your right and left side of your body,” explains Lee. “It’s scientifically and clinically proven to reduce stress.” The Sound & Sand Massage treatment not only appeals to earthy and new-age people who are into Earthbased treatments, sound therapy and crystals, but also to athletes in need of deep massage or clients looking for intense stress relief.
CEDAR ENZYME BATH Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary Freestone, Calif. 90 minutes, $99 (single) $89 (couple, each) This 90-minute ritual includes the spa’s signature Cedar Enzyme Bath, which boosts circulation and metabolism, reduces stress, deeply relaxes, cleanses the skin, and provides relief from aches and pains, as well as complimentary tea in the spa’s Japanese Garden and a meta-music blanket wrap. “The heat in the bath is generated biologically through the process of fermentation, which is nature’s purification process,” says Michael Stusser, owner and founder of Osmosis. “It’s a selfcleansing medium, which breaks down toxins. A coating of material that sticks to your body while you are in the bath

absorbs perspiration. This coating is brushed off your body after you finish the bath outside the tub. The high temperatures, biochemistry of the fermentation process, and the low pH of the wood fibers work together to create a hygienic environment.” The spa uses Port Orford Cedar (a white cedar) for its highly fragrant nature. “For thousands of years, cedar and its essence has been used by Native Americans and other aboriginal cultures for rites of purification, strength and cleansing,” adds Stusser. Earthy, adventurous and outdoorsy types tend to favor this treatment, admits Stusser. "However, older people find tremendous relief from chronic pain, younger people like what it does to their skin and everyone benefits from deep relaxation," he adds.
FEET IN THE CREEK L’Apothecary Spa at L’Auberge de Sedona Sedona, Ariz. 60 minutes, $160 Performed at the spa’s freshwater creek that runs along the resort property, this treatment helps connect the client to the Earth. The client stands in ankle-deep water, taking in the fresh Sedona air and the nature sounds for a meditative moment. The therapist then rinses the feet and performs foot reflexology with the spa’s signature flower essence serum. "The greatest benefit is providing a unique outdoor experience that often takes guests outside their comfort zone,” says spa director Catherine Powers. “The treatment includes reflexology, a technique called 'earthing' or 'grounding,' and 'forest bathing.' These techniques
o&w let's get dirty can provide reduced stress levels, enhanced immune response and can assist in balancing the body’s energy flow." If, however, your spa does not have a creek, you can take this concept indoors and create the experience with a portable footbath or pedicure basin, adding flowers, and/or a mud product or even smooth small river rocks for a more tactile experience. For day spas without the luxury of having a body of water nearby, Powers suggests, “While the guest's feet are soaking, the therapist can lead the guest in a guided meditation that transports them to a beautiful outdoor area near water. Adding a nature CD or sound station with flowing water would enhance the experience, as would an earthy aromatherapy scent. Then the therapist can provide a neck and shoulder massage. The treatment would end with a foot rinse, towel dry, foot reflexology and application of a rich organic moisturizing cream."
THE TERRA SIGILLATA RASUL CEREMONY Spa Atlantis Reno, Nev. 50 minutes, $95 (single) $140 (couple) This ceremony is based on the Arabian cleansing ritual, which originated as part of the preparation of a new bride for marriage to the Sultan. The self-administered treatment, which is purifying, calming and exfoliating, is conducted in the privacy of the spa’s special mud chamber with aromatherapy, twinkling lights and heated ergonomic seats. Spa Atlantis uses six different healing muds (called Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Zeta), each for specific parts of the body called “chakra muds,” which help to release positive energies. "Each of the muds have a slight pull, so they detoxify as well," explains Kimberlee Tolkien, corporate executive
director of marketing. "Alpha is a white mud for the face, made to gently exfoliate more delicate skin. Beta mud is yellow and made for the décolletage, which has a calming effect. Zeta mud is light grey for the arms and back and helps promote a feeling of balance." "Delta mud is dark grey for the legs, and energizes and strengthens and reminds us we are connected to the earth," she continues. "Mud Epsilon is black and is for areas of the body that need the most exfoliation, such as the elbows and feet. The final mud is Gamma, which is the color red and applied to the abdomen." Tolkien adds that the treatment is especially popular with couples. "It's interactive and self-directed. You are able to completely relax and enjoy each other’s company," she says.

from years ago that mold to your body,” says Lee. “The hot packs heat up the body to allow for deeper pressure and the cold helps with the inflammation and we balance it across the body.” Lee adds that there's no real trick to the magnetic aspect of the sand — it's more about the sand's ability to mold perfectly to various parts of the body, such as lower back, hips or other tricky areas that are ailing the client where a typical hot/cold pack or stone would fall off. "It's very easy to work with and to apply to those targeted areas," she says. The Magnetic Sand Treatment is popular with athletes, people who work out a lot, and anyone needing pain relief from injury soreness or inflammation.
Magnetic mineral sand is formed into individual hot and cold packs and placed strategically on parts of the body with inflammations or soreness. “It’s not unlike hot and cold stone therapy, or the Fango mud treatments

What is the best part about working with makeup in the spa industry? Helping women feel good about themselves inside and out. It’s very rewarding to do someone’s makeup and at the end of the session they can’t stop smiling, staring in the mirror or taking selfies. Our motto is, “Make Beautiful Be You!” When did you decide to implement makeup services to your spa menu? I actually started my career as a professional makeup artist back in 1999 and then began to add spa services to my menu over the years. I saw cli-

ents wanting and needing other services so I began to add them one by one until I had a full service menu. I started with my professional makeup certification and then got trained and certified in airbrush tanning, esthetics, hair services and finally body and massage treatments. What is the hardest part about offering makeup services? The hardest part of doing makeup at our studio is when we have to turn clients away. We’re one of the leading companies in the Houston area for professional makeup artistry and we have some days when all of our artists are booked. We always offer to take our clients’ info for our waiting list in the event that we have a cancellation.
Which of your makeup services is the most requested? Our one-on-one makeup services are very popular both on and off site. They are usually about three hours depending on the individual client’s needs. We work with the client step-by-step to show them how to apply their makeup in a way that best suits their features, personality and coloring. We teach them by applying the makeup to one half of their face and letting them apply to the other. The client watches our every move and we give them plenty of hands-on application time so they are able to apply their makeup with our guidance and we can correct them if needed.
MAKEUP AREA Describe your makeup area. Our makeup area is about 350 square feet of our 2,570 square foot facility. It is located at the front of the studio and is the first thing clients see when they walk in! Our makeup area is located in the front of our facility not only because we feature our makeup services, but also because it is the area of our facility with the most natural light, as it is next to our windows that extend from the floor to the ceiling. How many stations do you have for makeup compared to your other services? We have a total of six makeup artists who share our three makeup stations. We also have two facial rooms, one massage room, two hairstyling rooms and two airbrush tanning rooms.
TEAM MEMBERS How do you select your makeup artists? The first thing I look at is their resume and portfolio. Specifically for our makeup artists, I look for commercial, fashion and film experience because
we work with several advertising agencies, modeling agencies and pro-photographers that use our employees for their projects. Once I narrow it down, I have them come in to do a model test-run. I watch their expertise as well as how they interact with clients. I take before and after pictures of their test-run. Overall, I look for someone who is personable, well put together and open to constructive criticism. I also expect my employees to take the time to do their own hair and makeup as well as take care of their own skin. We are a walking advertisement of what we do. How do you keep your staff members incentivized? I reward the employee with the most return clients, the most revenue generated and the most retail sales generated on a quarterly basis. I give them a gift card to one of their favorite stores or additional discounts on our products and services. I also allow my team to work freelance on the side, which helps keep them happy and cuts down on employee turnover rate. To ensure my employees do not take their freelance clients away from our business, I have them sign a non-compete contract that specifically states they are not allowed to solicit their own services or business while working with any of our clients.
MARKETING How do you promote your services? We offer a discount on a client’s next service if they book it before they leave. We also advertise with several websites, magazines, networking groups and trade shows and we use Facebook, Twitter and Instagram weekly for marketing as well. We send out a monthly e-blast with different specials and clients also receive a discount birthday email to use during
their birthday month. Anytime a client combines multiple services, we offer them a “combined service discount” as well as a group rate discount for clients that come in together, such as wedding parties or prom groups. Quarterly, we host an open house where we invite different vendors to come set up a booth at the studio to mingle with friends, family, employees and clients. Word of mouth is our most effective form of marketing!
INSIDER TIPS What makes your business UNIQUE? We pride ourselves on being able to provide mobile services to our clients. We travel to our clients’ homes, offices, hotels or party venues to get them ready for their special events. Our mobile services are limited to our makeup, hairstyling and airbrush tanning services and we have a minimum requirement that has to be met in order for our staff to travel off-site. What advice would you give other spa owners who are interested in offering makeup services? Do your research and know your competition! Know other rates in your area and price out your services accordingly based on the quality of your staff.

Tricks to highlight perfection and minimize imperfection
Remember the days when it was considered the ultimate makeup flub to apply any cosmetics darker than one’s natural skin tone, particularly below the neck? Well this “flub” is exactly what spurred the newest makeup movement. Traditionally makeup is only worn on the face to enhance the features and draw the eye to this most beautiful part of the body. However, the neck, collarbone, shoulders and chest are an extension of the face, so why not enhance these spectacular parts of the body as well? Today’s latest trend in beauty is breaking all the rules and taking makeup application to a whole new level! Behold the phenomenon of upper body contouring. Upper body contouring is not a new concept in the spa. In fact, many medical practices have been utilizing devices and

formulations to aid in giving the upper body more structure and definition for decades! But who needs plastic surgery when you can use makeup to contouring? Read on to learn how celebrities achieve a perfect red carpet neck, shoulders and collarbone without lasers, surgeries or peels!

What are highlighting and contouring? The concept of highlighting and contouring (or HaCking as it can be termed) is fairly simple.
Contouring The act of utilizing dark, matte (or shadow-toned) makeup normally about two shades darker than one’s natural skin tone in specific areas, to enhance the bone structure and create the illusion of more depth and definition in the face and body. Contouring may be achieved by utilizing either cream or powder formulas and sometimes a combination of the two.
Highlighting Highlighting works in conjunction with, but is the opposite of contouring. Highlighting is using makeup a shade or two lighter than the skin’s natural color to enhance the high points of the face, neck or body. As with contouring both cream and powder formulations may be used and utilizing matte, shimmer or both finishes is common. Both techniques are often used together to create the perfect balance and enhance symmetry in the face and body.
Why contour the neck? Contouring this area makes the neck appear slimmer and longer, creating the illusion of a more elegant silhouette. Application entails highlighting the center of the neck and contouring the outside in order to draw attention upward and inward. This technique may be done on both the front and the back of the neck (the back takes some

talent and mirror assistance). This look is particularly beautiful when paired with an updo. Does your client have a waddle (hanging skin in the neck) they would like to minimize? Remember that the neck is a place that tends to show age the most, so evening out skin tone with correctors and a foundation that corresponds with the skin color on the face can really downplay an aging neck.
Why contour the collarbone (a.k.a. the clavicle)? The collarbone is one of the most delicate and feminine areas on a woman’s body. Enhancing it can really make one look slimmer and draws attention to an area that may not commonly be exposed. This type of look is particularly
gorgeous for brides or formal events where the chest is bare. Collarbone contouring is a look that began with models and ballerinas, and is now used in everyday beauty regimens. Simply highlight the tops of the bones of the clavicle and then trail the contour color on both sides to really make that highlight pop and sparkle!
Why contour (highlight) the shoulders? A bare shoulder is the new cleavage! Particularly with the new “cold shoulder” or “cut out shoulder” trend in fashion, this look is accentuated with a little shimmer on the shoulder. Adding a shimmery highlight gives the illusion of sweat enhanced, dewy or glowy skin. This look creates the perfect imitation of summer, no matter

what the season. For this particular look it is best to skip the highlight and move directly into a golden or bronzy highlight. Simply rub a cream or liquid highlight onto the shoulders or sweep on a powder highlight for a luminous glow and shine bright like a diamond!
When it comes to contouring and highlighting the neck, collarbone and chest, a combination of products may need to be used.
Product selection Finding products that work best for body highlighting and contouring often depend on skin type (much like the face). It is so important that the appropriate skin care is used before body makeup is applied. If body makeup is applied to skin that is too dry, it appears patchy or flaky. Skin that is oily often needs a mattifier; without one the makeup may slide right off the skin! When it comes to contouring and highlighting the neck, collarbone and chest, a combination of products may need to be used. I prefer light layers of cream contour and highlight shades, which are widely available now due to this growing industry trend. A setting powder is key as the product can transfer to clothes. Remind your clients to keep all light-colored clothing away from the areas of the body where product is applied. A light application of powder contour and highlight may also be applied after the area is set as a method to keep the skin looking like skin. Remember that while blending is important on the face, blending body makeup can mean the difference between looking fab and looking fake. Body makeup that hasn’t been thoroughly blended ruins the illusion and just looks like lots of makeup.

We have seen some crazy trends as of late when it comes to the world of makeup (you may recall trends such as clown contouring and using kitchen utensils for application), but this one is the real deal! No matter what the occasion, upper body contouring can create a more symmetrical, chiseled, tanned and toned silhouette! It’s the perfect add on service to a professional makeup application, the best way to sell body care and make your clients feel more confident in their own skin.
