THE

LUXURY OF

SCIENCE Top Plant Stem Cells for Skin Rejuvenation

MARCH 2016

SKIN

THE CONSTANT DEMAND

for the

“next best thing in skin care keeps researchers on a never-ending quest for new products and treatments to restore skin to its youthful state. Science and technology have become invaluable in the development of active skin care ingredients, with plant-derived stem cells as leaders in this cutting-edge market. Before addressing plant stem cells, we must first address the role that our own stem cells play in the skin. Stem cells are the cells from which all animal, human and plant life are born. Cutaneous stem cells reside in the basal layer of the skin and are responsible for healing wounds and the renewal and regeneration of skin. When a stem cell divides, the daughter cells have the potential to remain a stem cell or to differentiate into progenitor cells, with a more specialized function.

SKIN

THE LUXURY OF SCIENCE

The stem cells in our skin have a limited life expectancy due to DNA damage, aging and oxidative stress. Plant stem cells, on the other hand, have been shown to offer protection of our own stem cells in order to delay the natural aging process.

Why plant stem cells? - Plant stem cell technology represents a major advancement in regenerative and anti-aging skin care. Unlike human stem cells that can only differentiate into another type of cell, plantderived stem cells are totipotent and have the ability to create an entirely new plant. Plant cells are an excellent source of active compounds, which possess versatile restorative properties, making them valuable for use in cosmetic formulations.

How are they obtained? - To harvest stem cells, companies wound a plant so that some of the cells around the wound revert into stem cells. This wound healing tissue is called a callus. Once harvested, the plant stem cell tissue is grown in a culture medium to obtain the active ingredients that are rich in the specific desired compounds.

The question most people ask is: “Which stem cells should you use to address which conditions?”

SKIN CARE f or

Expectant

Rhonda Allison

CARRYING A BABY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST JOYS A WOMAN CAN EXPERIENCE. But while it comes with many blessings, it also puts the body through numerous changes and potential challenges. For some women, pregnancy works very well with their body and skin, and they experience that radiant “glow” that often accompanies the journey. However, others suffer from pregnancy-related skin issues during this unique experience. Some of these issues include acne, melasma, dehydration and even rosacea. These problems occur during pregnancy due to hormonal changes taking place in the body. The influx of hormones introduces an unpredictable variable that significantly impacts the skin’s function and appearance. If left untreated, the risk of these problems becoming more severe or permanent increases.

The

TREE-LINED Path to

SERENITY SPA of the MONTH Meadowood Spa, St. Helena, Calif. by Amanda Clinton Winter

A luxurious hideaway in the hills above St. Helena in Napa Valley, akin to idyllic cottages and maple trees, the brand new Meadowood Spa encompasses 14,000 sq. ft. of a calming retreat in every sense of the word. The spa is an exclusive sanctuary, available only to guests and members of the Meadowood Napa Valley resort. Specially curated wellness treatments meet private suites, tranquil gardens and a healthy culinary menu with homegrown ingredients. “Our goal is to provide our guests with an experience that is synonymous with the Napa Valley way of life,” says director of spa and wellness Michael Conte. “We want our guests to have a healthy and luxurious time with us.”

t’s no secret that spa clients today are seeking wellness along with esthetic enhancement. It’s also widely understood and accepted that follow-

ing a holistic approach from the inside out promotes wellness and healthy skin, yet less is known about how wellness and improved states of health can be achieved from the outside in by caring for the skin. Topical spa treatments have the potential to help prevent skin cancer, enhance the detoxification process, promote a healthier skin barrier and even shield the immune system. Add value to your esthetic body services by understanding their complete benefits and educating your clients on how these treatments can simultaneously achieve internal and external health.

SOURCES SIFTING THROUGH DIGITAL INFORMATION VIA SOCIAL MEDIA BY DIANE BUCCOLA

WHEN I FIRST EARNED MY ESTHETICIAN LICENSE in the late 1990s, Facebook did not yet exist and there were no online message boards. Internet access was available by dial-up only. So I didn’t have anyone to bounce information off of other than my schoolmates, and since my classmates had the same limited training I did, we weren’t particularly helpful to each other. Eventually, of course, the Internet became more advanced. In my ongoing quest to further my esthetic education, I found my way to a couple of fledgling spa-related online message boards. Finally, I had somebody to “talk” to! This form of instant communication allowed me to network with other estheticians. These boards enabled us to compare notes, ask questions, figure things out and grow together. This was extremely helpful to my esthetics career.

KNOW YOUR SOURCES

Fast-forward to today’s spa industry. Esthetics is much more specialized and diverse than it was back then. Equipment is extremely high-tech and skin care products are scientifically advanced. Regrettably, esthetic education in many schools and licensing requirements in most states have not kept up with the accelerated growth of esthetics, which leaves a rather large void between estheticians’ preparedness and the real world of esthetics. Of course, the Internet is a valuable source of learning and networking, but there are some serious drawbacks. I love that I can have a question and with a few keystrokes, answers appear! But how do we know which answers are correct?

DON’T ASSUME THAT AN ESTHETICIAN IS AN EXPERT JUST BECAUSE HE OR SHE HAS BEEN LICENSED LONGER THAN YOU.

The worst infraction — which I see regularly on social media — is advice given by those who have no understanding of their own state’s laws and regulations, much less the rules in all 50 states. Too often, incorrect

meets Harnessing the power of ancient energy treatments by Melanie Sachs

The modern spa has moved way past the stereotypical idea of “pamper palaces, where only the privileged would go to spend their discretionary capital. Today, more and more spa goers are seeking not only pleasure but true solace, healing and rejuvenation. In this new environment, it only makes sense that the energy treatments of the East have found a home.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS GUIDE

T

o clarify some of the mystery around the many words associated with energy treatments, it is important first to understand the underpinnings upon which energy treatments work and rely. We are beings of sound and light. In the Bible we read, “In the beginning was the word.” The ancients of the East say this is the sound OM, or AUM. This is the foundation of words such as “amen,” shalom” and “salam.” The Bible goes on to say that light was separated from darkness. From first sound and then light, all things manifest arose. And, like sound and light in general, points and energy lines course through us in organized, coherent patterns.

Acupuncture Meridians and Points How it works: These properties of space, sound and light come together in us as coherent patterns of what are known as meridians, which ascend and descend in our bodies, punctuated by points that can be stimulated by needles, heat, pressure, light, sound and essential oils. Why it works: If you are trained to appreciate and do any form of body work with these meridians and points in mind, the areas where you apply the strokes respond more quickly, heal faster and feel better to the client. In fact, as a therapist you will be able to work with less effort and see better results.

Chakras How it works: From the Sanskrit word for “wheel,” chakras are also referred to as the “light-body” because they emit different frequencies of light in different parts of the body. Whereas the acupuncture meridians are found

throughout the body and circulate through our appendages, the primary sites of the main chakras are from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. The seven chakras, from the root chakra in the pelvic floor to the crown chakra located at the top of the head, are the primary vital energy points or vortices of Ayurveda. Why it works: Whereas the acupuncture points and meridians will have both physiological and emotionally uplifting benefits, treatments focusing on the chakras will address root emotional causes of stress and tension. In fact, many people will often become tearful or more emotional when chakra work is done. More than likely, your more guarded or private clients may shy away from such treatments, but such work is excellent for those who are in transitions

in any part of their life. It’s important to remember, no one can balance your chakras for you. Chakra work is internal work. A chakra treatment is offered to support the areas to create a positive environment for change to occur.

Marma Points How it works: In the tradition of Ayurveda, there is also a web or matrix of subtle energy channels, the chakra system, that is similarly punctuated by what are known as marma — or vital energy points. From the Sanskrit word meaning hidden or secret, a marma point is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissue meet. Why it works: There are 84,000 marma points that can be found throughout the body, with some being identical to acupuncture point sites. However, most Ayurvedic practitioners will use a maximum of 108. Marma therapy usually includes light therapeutic pressure, essential oils and herbs. Using colored light therapies, quality essential oils, stones, sound or the power of kansa metal are all ways in which you can enhance the effectiveness and benefits of these treatments. Marma therapy balances the flow of energy through the muscles, joints and organs, rejuvenating and allowing deep relaxation.

experience. Mind-body medicine demonstrates that a positive attitude has a powerful impact on the healing process. Similarly, a therapist who approaches their work with a positive focus and sense of love for their client will have better results and happier clients. In the study of Ayurveda and other oriental healing sciences, developing a peaceful and compassionate mind is an essential ingredient to successful outcomes — and, of course, a happier life. To bring together this state of being with the subtle energy technology of oriental healing methodologies is a powerful combination. Your treatments are truly powerful if they combine an awareness of body energy, products that energetically feed the body and its microbes to improve radiance and immunity, and a clear, focused, radiant and compassionate therapist. One may think anyone with this wisdom could perform these treatments with great results. But there is one important component, the secret behind the success of any therapist, whether performing conventional or alternative therapies. This has to do with the mind. In Eastern tradition, one learns that mind precedes body. How and what we think and feel influences our bodily

As the spa industry continues to move toward integrating the mind, body and soul, more spas are adding alternative healing treatments to their service menus. While this does include the more common alternative healing modalities such as acupuncture, chakra balancing and Ayurveda, some spas are now taking it one step further by offering a wide variety of energy work, intuitive readings and even psychic massages.

T

hough many might call it “new age-y,” there actually is nothing “new” about this type of work. Many of these modalities are ancient and rooted in Eastern medicine and philosophy. “It’s important for spas to really look at these older modalities because there is a reason some of them have been around for thousands of years,” says Suzanne Chavez, spa director at The Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico. “It’s simply because they work. Even Dr. Oz has said, ‘Energy medicine is the medicine of the future.’”

READINGS Readings come in many forms — angel readings, intuitive readings, psychic sessions, astrology, tarot card readings, aura color readings and more — and all of them are making appearances on spa menus.

Angel Readings The Angelic Touch Day Spa in Ojai, Calif., offers Angel Readings (30 minutes, $75, 60 minutes, $125) to help clients get in touch with their guardian angels. “You need to take care of the spirit to be truly healthy,” says owner Jenny Cothran, a certified angel therapy practitioner. “Everyone is born with at least two guardian angels and we can help you communicate with them for guidance on life, love, finances, etc., and connect with loved ones in the spirit world.” The reading is done using psychometry in which the client brings a special metal object with them, such as jewelry. “The client sits across from me and I begin by asking the client to close his/ her eyes and take a few deep breaths to get centered,” explains Cothran. “I then read a Prayer of Protection before

the actual reading begins. Then I ask the client for the metal object that they want me to use for the reading and I close my eyes to connect with the spirit and the angels.”

Intuitive Readings The Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico offers Sage Vision Intuitive Reading (50 minutes, $135). “Our clients come in for this when they need clarity on their purpose in life, or help with challenging situations and a deeper understanding of their soul path,” says Chavez. “This works well for us here because New Mexico has a long history of healers who look to the sky, herbs and beyond for spiritual guidance.”

Aura-Soma Color Reading Mii amo Spa at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Ariz., has several alternative therapies, including the Aura-Soma Color Reading (60 minutes, $250, 90 minutes, $290), which originates from England. “It starts with the client choosing three colored oil bottles that they are most drawn to, and the therapist gives a reading based on what that color represents,” says general manager Jill Clark. “The service is more like an intuitive reading. Based on the bottles chosen, the therapist has amazing insight into personality, struggles, etc. It helps get you to who you really are, what you’re supposed to be doing, and achieving your higher potential.”

“It’s important for spas to really look at these older modalities because there is a reason some of them have been around for thousands of years... It’s simply because they work.”

The 90-minute service includes a massage with the oil, and the guest keeps the remaining bottle after the service.

PSYCHIC MASSAGE Mii amo Spa just happened to have three licensed massage therapists with psychic abilities on staff, which gave them the idea to provide Psychic Massage (60 minutes, $250, 90 minutes, $290). “We started having therapists come to us and say, ‘I was a doing a massage and I was reading their presence and understanding their energy, how can we incorporate this?’” says Clark. “So

we decided to combine the two. Each time it’s different. It depends on what is going on with the client and what the therapist is able to read. Sometimes it’s more talk than massage, sometimes it’s the opposite.”

CHAKRA BALANCING This ancient practice involves balancing the body’s seven chakras, or energy centers — root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye and crown. This service can either be provided by an energy healer as a standalone service or incorporated into a traditional massage. “The idea is to balance and harmonize your chakras so that your body,

execute their traditions authentically. The Spa at Loretto’s Native American Ritual features a sage clearing and hot stone massage (110 minutes, $265). “We start with a sage blessing that I wrote and the sage smudge, which helps to cleanse people energetically and spiritually,” explains Chavez. “You can hold the smoking sage in your hand (you first burn it, blow it out, and let the smoke waft in the air) or put it in a ceramic dish and just walk around the body, and we say our blessing before the sacred stone massage.” However, spas that choose to adopt a version of Native American rituals should learn about the culture’s customs and beliefs. “It’s important to do your research to make sure you don’t disrespect their traditions,” Chavez explains. (See LNE & Spa’s July 2014 article “Wisdom from the Land” for more.)

ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is an alternative healing therapy that involves tiny needles gently placed into key points on the body to help relieve a variety of health and emotional issues including depression, anxiety, stress, pain, constipation, PMS, asthma, insomnia and more. “It’s essential to our spa because The Dragontree is a place for your health,” says Briana Borten, founder and CEO of The Dragontree Spa, which has two locations in Portland, Oreg., and one in Boulder, Colo. “Our treatments are therapeutic and that includes some Eastern philosophies and medicines including acupuncture, Chinese herbs and supplements, and our Ayurveda menu.” The Dragontree’s

mind and soul are all in sync,” says Chavez. “I liken it to a car engine where this belt moves that pulley, which moves the engine and so on. We look at the body that way with each chakra. They all need to be working in sync to work. It’s a light-touch modality with the practitioner holding their hands on or above the body at each chakra point.” The Spa at Loretto offers Chakra Balancing for 50 minutes at $135.

Acupuncture & Herbal Medicine initial visit is approximately 90 minutes for $136, and follow-up visits are approximately 45 minutes for $98. The acupuncture appointment starts with a medical consultation by a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and is often combined with a consultation about herbs and supplemental therapy as the two go hand-inhand. “We have an herbal pharmacy here where we can create the formula that the doctor recommends, so it’s highly customized based on what is going on with the client,” she adds.

AYURVEDA Ayurveda, which aims to integrate and balance the body, mind and spirit, originates from India and is one of the oldest medical systems. It focuses on the treatment and prevention of illnesses and removing blockages that hold people back from living a well-balanced life. Ayurveda treatments are another staple of The Dragontree’s menu and philosophy. They offer four Bliss Therapies, which are treatments within Ayurveda. Garshana (25 minutes, $44) is a dry brushing of the skin with light, vigorous strokes that helps with circulation, exfoliation and the release of toxins. During the Swedana treatment (30 minutes, $66), a steam tent is used to warm and relax the body and open the pores while the client’s head remains cool as they receive a scalp and facial massage. Abhyanga (60 minutes, $110) is a warm oil massage designed to deeply relax and remove blockages. During the Shirodhara (30 minutes, $76) treatment, a therapist pours a stream of

warm herb-infused oil onto the client’s forehead, using subtle patterns to induce a state of deep peace to help quiet the mind and eliminate mental distress. The Full Bliss Immersion (150 minutes, $260) combines all four. “The bliss therapies are so wonderful for calming the nervous system so they are deeply relaxing while also very nourishing to the skin,” says Borten.

Herbal Supplements In this traditional Chinese treatment, hundreds of herbs in countless combinations are used to treat a client’s individual needs. Fusion LifeSpa in Deephaven, Minn., offers an Herbal Supplements consultation (60 minutes, $80) and employs a naturopathic medicine doctor who creates customized formulas in the form of teas or capsules after a consultation with the client. “Dr. John Christianson, N.D. checks their pulse, tongue and other key indicators according to Chinese medicine as to what’s going on internally,” says spa director Michelle Shuster. “His services are good for anything, but he specializes in anxiety, depression, sleep issues and female issues such as irregular menstruation and menopause.”

Salt Therapy Known as halotherapy, salt therapy is an alternative medicine that relieves many sinus and respiratory ailments. Spas are now implementing salt rooms or caves where clients breathe in medical grade salt, usually lining the walls and infused into the air. At Salt Spa Colorado, with locations in Lakewood and Louisville, Colo., salt rooms are built with three tons of salt lining 100 percent of the walls

With separate adult and children’s rooms, where the children get to play with the salt, these rooms cater to clients with asthma, chronic sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia or those suffering from a cold, coughs or allergies, among other respiratory issues. A 45-minute session is $30. “The key to the whole therapy is the benefit you get from the halogenerator, 90 percent of the curative effect comes it. It takes the salt and grinds it down to particle size and blows it into the room,” says owner Allen Tawa. “The therapy is a simple as sitting back in a comfortable reclining lounger and breathing in the salt. The sessions are quiet, many people read, sleep or meditate.” (For more, see our article on “The Business of Salt” in the October 2015 edition of LNE & Spa.)

Laughter Therapy As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. Recent research indicates laughter produces gamma waves, the same ones achieved during meditation. Gamma is the only frequency that affects every part of the brain, researcher and professor Lee Berk told TIME Magazine. Laughing engages the entire brain at once, achieving contentment and clear focus from being in sync. At Laughter Yoga Salon NYC in New York, N.Y., owner Francine Shore offers laughter yoga sessions dubbed “spa-ha-ha” wellness workouts (60 minutes, $10; private sessions or events 90 minutes, $150). Shore’s laughter yoga sessions can involve deep breathing, clapping, dancing, stretching, a sitting laughter meditation and other movement. “It’s a very rigorous cardio workout that burns many calories, but is ultimately exhilarating and enriching like a spa treatment,” she says. “Laughter from the diaphragm oxygenates all the cells in your body, the facial muscles are aglow when doing laughter yoga.”

Meditative Yoga “The word ‘yoga’ is derived from a Sanskrit word that means ‘to yoke.’ Yoga in itself is a combination of physical practice and spiritual practice,” says Leslie White, fitness director for Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in Vista, Calif. Cal-a-Vie offers several yoga classes (50 minutes, all classes offered as part of packages) that combine fitness of the body and mind. “Physical practices encourage mobility, flexibility and strength of body. Meditative practices encourage relaxation, confidence, and centeredness of mind,” she adds. The spa offers Climb and Soar Yoga

Reiki Reiki, an ancient Japanese treatment, is the transferring of energy from one life source to another. To relax the client, reduce their stress and revive their life force energy, a practitioner transfers universal energy to the client by laying the hands on, or directly above, their centers of energy. Heather Dempsey, owner of the face & Body spa in Yardley, Penn., says many recipients of Reiki experience sensations such as warmth, 82

heat, tingling or cooler temperatures while others may not experience any sensations. “When people hear that they worry, but that doesn’t mean the treatment isn’t effective. It just means for some reason they didn’t need for their body to give off that sensation,” she explains. The face & Body spa offers several levels of Reiki treatments, according to the experience of the practitioner: Level I (30 minutes, $50, 60 minutes, $80) Level II 30 minutes, $60, 60 minutes, $90) Master/Teacher Level (30 minutes, $70, 50 minutes, $100) — as well as classes so people can become practitioners. “Reiki is one of the most beautiful treatments,” she says. “There are no contraindications and it helps in more ways than a lot of people realize. Not only does it relax and reduce stress, but it balances the body, which allows it to work at its optimum capacity. We try to integrate Reiki into every department to give people as many opportunities to experience it as possible.” The spa

Much unlike a stage magic trick, clinical hypnotherapy is a guided session meant to help clients alter behavior patterns, increase motivation, reach a higher consciousness or realize their true calling. At We Care Spa, a detox and spiritual retreat in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., Renee Cardenas, clinical hypnotherapist and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) trainer, offers Timeline Therapy/ NLP Hypnotherapy (90 minutes, $250) to guests in the privacy of their own room. Cardenas begins a session by having a conversation with the client. As the person begins to bring out what is on their mind, she asks questions “geared to shake up the subconscious pattern of thinking.” “The session is based on different modalities and tailored to the individual’s needs,” Cardenas shares. “I like to create the analogy of yoga for the mind: we stretch, twist and breathe and that’s what I do for the mind. Like yoga, openings are created and the person starts looking at the real issues. The purpose is to take the person from a place of disempowerment to a place of empowerment and excitement about life.”

Omana Natural Wellness and MedSpa Center in Houston, Texas, offers completely customized homeopathy and naturopathy treatments, beginning with an initial consultation (adults: 60 minutes, $175, children: 45 minutes, $135). “My practice is based on nutrition, homeopathy and botanicals,” says owner Alicia C. It takes about six to nine months to see changes in the iris after an initial analysis and implementing lifestyle changes, so some clients return for a follow up to see if that particular part of their body is back in balance. “You can look at a person who seems like they’re in perfect health, but the eye tells me a different story. Conversely, I look at someone that may not look very healthy, but they have really good DNA and may just need to make small changes in their health,” Lemoine-Kainer shares. “My favorite thing about iridology is it helps you get specific about health, making it easy to

identify the weakest link in the body’s make-up.” See LNE & Spa’s full article on iridology, “It’s All in the Eyes,” in the August 2015 edition. With therapies to address any kind of imbalance in body, mind and soul, alternative treatments can richly benefit your clients. If energy medicine is the medicine of the future, the future is now.

Iridology In iridology, the eyes are not only the windows to the soul, but the body’s internal health systems. An alternative health science based on analyzing fibers in the iris, iridology can determine the tissue integrity of the body’s major organs and systems. Cheryl Lemoine-Kainer, certified iridologist and nutritionist based in The Woodlands, Texas, says iridology is an alternative science widely used in other countries. By taking a photograph of each eye with a digital iris camera and viewing it under increased magnification, Lemoine-Kainer analyzes what the irides are revealing about the strengths and weaknesses of the body. “Iridology can reveal a person’s inherited conditions, kind of like looking at their DNA, but you can also see changes that occur during a person’s lifetime,” she explains. “If the person is stressed it makes what’s called stress rings in the eye, if their cholesterol is elevated it makes a white ring around the perimeter.” After an iridology session (30-45 minutes, $90) Lemoine-Kainer can make specific recommendations based on

Gemstones have crowned kings, queens, knights and brides, enjoying a reputation as a status symbol since ancient times, but these precious stones can also adorn your spa’s menu and enhance your practice in more ways than one. For their balancing and healing properties, many clients are drawn to gemstone healing treatments seeking peace, wholeness and harmony.

ue to their versatile nature, gemstones can be added to nearly any treatment, enhancing your spa’s most popular services or creating innovative healing treatments. Gem therapy enthusiasts name a long list of benefits based on faith in the gem’s positive, healing energy to flow in the body as stress, ailments and negative thinking flow out. Coming from the earth, these gems carry the planet’s energy and each gem, unique in shape, color and size, carries a distinct energetic vibration.

Incorporating Gemstones Renu Day Spa in Deerfield, Ill., takes a spiritual healing approach to treatments, customizing any service with gemstones. “We use stones in all our spiritual and esthetic services like facials, massages or wraps,” shares owner Anna Pamula. “If a client comes in stressed or agitated, some stones will help soothe them, and we feel they are more receptive to treatments.” The spa carries a large collection of gemstones, available for clients to incorporate into their treatment of choice. Linda Bertaut, author, esthetician and Reiki master, cautions that many gemstone treatments require specific training to properly read a client’s energy and balance the chakra system. Estheticians can begin incorporating gemstones by placing some around the treatment room or in a bowl. Clients can also hold a gem in their left hand during treatments, as the left side of the body is the intuitive and receptive side.

Chakra

originates from the Sanskrit word for wheel and refers to wheels of light, or energy centers, throughout the body. The seven main chakras are aligned along the spine and are best balanced by a group of corresponding gemstones. “Each one is associated with a color, sense, sound, endocrine gland and organ,” says Bertaut. “Being out of balance in one or more chakras for a period of time can cause ‘dis-ease’ in the associated organs.”

Gemstone healing specialists encourage allowing the client to choose the stone they are most attracted to, as the body’s energy is drawn to what is best suited to its current needs. “When we are attracted to a gemstone it’s because we instinctively know what is best for us,” adds Bertaut. “It takes training to know how to read a client’s energy, but the client will instinctively know, by being attracted to that gemstone, what they need most.”

Balancing Chakras From the Sanksrit word for “wheel” or “disk,” chakras are centers of energy throughout the body. These spinning wheels interact with the body’s psychological and neurological systems. Seven chakras form a straight line along the spine starting from the base to the crown of the head. “The colors of nature’s rainbow are the same as our inner rainbow, the chakra system,” explains Bertaut. “Each color vibrates at a different frequency. If a client is depleted in any particular area such as love, stress or anxiety, an esthetician can replenish that energy by placing the right color gemstone on the corresponding chakra.” Treatments that balance the body’s chakras are becoming more popular as clients seek services that allow them to feel well on all levels. At The Spa at Mandarin Oriental in Miami, Fla., the Kundalini Journey (120 minutes, $360) aims to rebalance and energize the seven chakras with aromatherapy, advanced massage techniques, color and sound therapy, gemstones and guided meditation. Before the treatment, clients choose the stones to which they are most drawn. “The Kundalini Journey is a unique holistic treatment to bring peace, harmony and restore overall balance,” says Osa Mallo, spa director at Mandarin Oriental. “Gemstones carry vibrational rates and they are placed within the aura to help balance specific chakras. For instance, pink quartz promotes selffulfillment and peace, restoring emo-

To begin a gemstone treatment, it is recommended to ground the client with meditation or breathwork. Bertaut opens her treatments with an intentional meditation, asking clients what they need most from the session. Whether they are seeking increased confidence or a better sense of purpose, this positive affirmation before or during the treatment can enhance any gemstone offering.

Connecting to Nature Gemstones are best coupled with holistic treatments and organic ingredients. At Renu, some of their popular gem offerings include the Aromatherapy Spa Glow (60 minutes, $95, 90 minutes,120) with Himalayan salt enriched with 74 trace minerals and customized oils and the Fortified Organic Facial (60 minutes, $95) vegan, gluten free and blended specifically for each client. “Aromatherapy oils work perfectly with the stones, especially seed oils as seed is the start of life,” shares Pamula. “We use only organic oils and products in our spa; we believe we can improve the skin and erase stress by connecting clients to nature using products as natural and raw as possible.” A holistic connection to the Earth may also renew a client’s depleted energy levels. Bertaut adds, “Nature is an abundant source of energy. An esthetician can bring pieces of nature such as gemstones, herbs or flowers to the treatment room as a means to refresh and rejuvenate the client.”

Key Things to Know Receptiveness Though the healing aspects of gemstones are not medically supported, many clients report a decrease of stress or anxiety due to gemstone therapy, which can be therapeutic for both mind and body. However, clients need an open mind to fully benefit from gemstone treatments. “They say whatever you believe will heal you,” Pamula explains. “You shouldn’t force gemstone healing on clients who are not open to it.”

Cleansing and Clearing There are no contraindications to gemstone therapy, however sanitation is still key. Experts suggest cleaning the stones with salt and water. Pamula recommends two to three minutes in salt water, being careful not to dilute the gems’ natural color, and laying the gems out to dry. To renew the stones and clear any remnant energies, Mallo reveals they can be reenergized by sunshine or moonlight. Some practitioners bury the stones in the earth to return it to its natural source and release any negative energy.

Gemstone Properties Training is important to know the properties of each gemstone and the effects they may have on a client. “Be careful with orange and red gemstones, as those are stimulating,” Bertaut cautions. “If someone has a lot of stress or anxiety, placing these stones on the second chakra can create more anxiety. A blue lace agate is very calming and helps to quiet the mind; this can go on

any chakra that has an overabundance of negative energy. Rose quartz stones are best at the heart chakra, helping clients experience more love and share love with others. A clear quartz has all the colors of the rainbow and can be placed anywhere.” With the rise of holistic treatments, clients will invest in what balances them from within and makes them feel whole. Being able to provide that, along with a warm, welcoming atmosphere leads to fulfilled clients who see your business as a place of respite and renewal. “In this world we go through so many ups and downs, people are scared, stressed and looking for healing,” Pamula shares. “If you’re looking to heal and make a living of it, now is a perfect time.”

the of How to anchor your client with conscious breathing by Robert Sachs

Breath is life. For centuries, healing and spiritual systems around the world have emphasized the importance of breathing for well-being, to bring peace and serenity within oneself and promote awareness. Breathing techniques of the ancient Chinese healing method, Qigong, and the yoga art of breath, Pranayama, accentuate the power of inhaling and exhaling to channel and appease the energy of the body and mind. Eastern and Western meditative traditions also rely on the steady, rhythmic flow and observation of the breath.

Invite mindful breath Affected by emotions and circumstances, breath changes when one is happy, sad or angry. It becomes laborious under stress and allows for negative energy to take over. But it is possible to consciously use breath to bring back peace, serenity and balance — an invaluable tool for the spa therapist. Indeed, as clients walk in for their treatments after an exhausting day of work, an upsetting phone conversation or the draining power of modern transportation, their bodies and minds are not truly prepared for the services they are about to receive. And they may only begin to let go halfway through the session or when it is about to end. Starting off your services with some fast and easy breathing exercises could be a great way to bring the client’s focus back to now and open them up to reap the full benefits of your treatments. With a calm spirit brought on by concentrating on steady breathing, the client will experience the feeling of being cared for on a deeper level, leave with greater satisfaction and return for more. Here are two simple breathing exercises you can bring into your practice to start off every treatment.

Baby breath One of the first tasks is to help your client carry their breath deeper into their lungs and body. This can be accomplished by getting them to breathe abdominally. People struggle with breathing down into their bellies, even though this is how babies breathe. So here is a simple exercise to help your client regain their original breath. While the client is sitting in a chair or lying on their back on the massage table, position their feet flat on a surface. If on a table, have them draw up

their knees so the feet are on the table. Ask them to grip the surface with their toes and breathe in, relax the toes and breathe out. In Ayurveda, the idea is that wherever one directs the attention of the body and moves even slightly, the breath follows. These are called upward and downward moving winds in the principle of Vata Dosha. When the toes grip as described, the downward winds are activated and one naturally breathes down into the belly. Have your client do this several times as they become aware of their breath going down into their belly. This will create an immediate deeper connection with their breath.

Alternate nostril breathing Here is an exercise from the Tibetan tradition of Pranayama to help overcome negative emotional patterns. It is a form of alternate nostril breathing. You can sit and practice with your patient or walk them through it — perhaps you could practice alone beforehand to get a really good grip on it. In Pranayama yoga there are two channels that are associated with the left and right nostrils. Each is also identified by a color and a gender: red and female (right nostril), white and

2

Have them block their right nostril with their right index finger and inhale through the left nostril (white/male channel). Tell them to imagine that the air they are breathing into their left nostril is pure and fresh and that it is being carried through the white channel down to the central channel, where both channels meet.

3

When the client visualizes the air entering the red channel (remember the white tube inserts into the red one), instruct them to let go of the right nostril and block the left one with their left index finger. As they exhale, tell them to visualize that the pure, fresh air is pushing out what is unclean and contaminated. As they breathe out, tell them to release the poison of attachment and clinginess. These negativities leave through the right nostril.

4

Starting off your services with some fast and easy breathing exercises could be a great way to bring the client’s focus back to now.

male (left nostril). Each channel starts off from the central channel, known as Shushumna — located somewhere below the navel — and travels up the body, passes through the neck, over the brain and ends in its respective nostril. Although these channels wrap and bind at various points to form what are called the chakras (energy points in the body), in this exercise have your client visualize the channels as straight, thin hollow tubes. The purpose of this Tantric practice is to release the pressure in the outer channels so the energy travels smoothly in the central channel. Instruct your client to visualize the central channel below the navel, where the white and red channels begin. Tell your client to imagine that the white channel inserts into the red channel. The red tube is seen as larger than the white tube.

Have them repeat this twice more. After this, allow them to breathe deeply through both nostrils and visualize the red channel (female/right nostril) as being luminous and purified.

5

Now have your client repeat steps one through four to cleanse the white channel (male/left nostril). Have them start off by blocking the left nostril and inhaling. Again, once the fresh, pure air gets to the central channel, have them switch nostrils and exhale through the right. Now the white channel is purified as well.

6

Ask them to visualize Shushumna, the central channel. It is blue and goes up the body and ends at the third eye (on the forehead). Have them picture both white and red channels inserted into the blue channel. Have them place their hands on their lap, allowing for the right hand to rest in the palm of the upturned left hand. The thumbs then touch each other to form a triangle.

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS GUIDE

ENERGY CLEARING EXERCISE FOR THERAPISTS The therapist must fully transition between clients to discharge their own emotional residue, as well as the energy they picked up from previous clients. Before commencing each treatment, follow the exercise below to reset your mind and raise your own vibrational energy for each client.

1. Stand at the head of the treatment table. Place the palm of your right hand over your forehead and the left palm over the area of your sacral chakra, just below the belly button. 2. Allow your diaphragm to relax and the breath to deepen. Feel the connection between the third eye and the sacral chakra.

With their hands as such, instruct them to raise them enough so that the navel is the center of this triangle.

7

Instruct the client to breathe in through both nostrils so that pure and fresh air goes down the red and white tubes to the central channel. As they exhale, the air cleanses the central channel and pushes ignorance and confusion out of the region of the third eye.

8

Repeat two more times. Have them lower their hands, breathe normally and experience the central channel as a luminous blue. Tibetan Ayurveda teaches that transforming attachment, anger, confusion or ignorance is fundamental to our overall sense of well-being. Teaching your clients how to do this exercise and regain their baby breath are excellent ways to help them get in tune with their

body and mind, let go of negativity and prepare to truly gain the benefits of the treatments they are about to receive. When our breath is calm and peaceful, we are calm and peaceful. We can appreciate life on a deeper level. Thus, what better way to start off the spa experience with your clients than by reclaiming the essence of life — breath? n

3. Imagine a column of blue light running anterior to your spine. This light runs from below your navel to the crown of your head. As you hold the two points, see that deep blue column of light as pure and radiant. 4. Notice if there are any dark areas that are not shimmering. Direct your attention to these areas and allow the light to radiate in them.

5. Feel the balance between your two hands — the right and left palms should feel similar. When they do, breathe in and take your right hand off of your forehead. Rest that palm over your left hand at your belly. Breathe in softly and deeply, repeat. 6. Finally, inhale while simultaneously removing both hands from the sacral chakra.

and The musts of hiring energy workers for your spa by Caroline Canetti

When you opened your spa, you probably never thought you’d be hiring someone based on whether they could give you a good psychic reading or tell you about your guardian angels. But, if you choose to add some offerings on the alternative end of things, you might find yourself in that peculiar situation. Here’s how to determine if an alternative healer is the real deal...

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS GUIDE

Highly Specialized Training Some of these workers, such as Reiki masters, chakra balancers, acupuncturists and Ayurveda therapists, come with specialized training that goes beyond your typical massage school — though some massage schools do have training in these areas. For instance, an acupuncturist can have a degree in Chinese medicine or get training from an acupuncture program. There are schools specifically for Ayurveda medi-

While it’s not necessary, the intuitive reader at Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe, New Mexico is a massage therapist, chakra balancer and Reiki master with two master’s degrees in Eastern and Western philosophy from St. John’s College and is now working toward a psychology degree. “We are looking for therapists from the best specialty schools,” says Suzanne Chavez, spa director at The Spa at Loretto.

and has written books for such major publishers as HarperCollins and Hay House Publishing. The same goes for hiring a psychic. “Ours are highly regarded and have studied energy work all over the world. And, like anything there’s a network who know who the good psychics are,” says Jill Clark, general manager of Mii amo Spa at Enchantment Resort in Sedona, Ariz.

A Heart-to-Heart

“This type of community is based a lot on reputation. You want to do your research on them before bringing them in for an interview. It’s beyond a good resume.”

cine, such as the California College of Ayurveda, but you can also learn it in your traditional massage school. “It’s best if someone comes from one of these specialty schools,” says Brian Borten, founder and CEO of The Dragontree, which has two locations in Portland, Ore., and one in Boulder, Colo. “But, for Ayurveda treatments, for instance, if you have one person on your team that has that background, it’s possible they can then train the other practitioners on the mechanics and the philosophy of the treatments.”

Reputation Especially in the area of energy work and readings, you want to look for practitioners who are well known in their field. “This type of community is based a lot on reputation. You want to do your research on them before bringing them in for an interview. It’s beyond a good resume,” says Jenny Cothran, owner of The Angelic Touch Day Spa in Ojai, Calif., who became a certified angel therapy practitioner through Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., who is very well-known

While it’s very important to hire people trained in these specific areas who have a good reputation and not just the traditional massage therapy license, it’s equally as important to make sure they are genuinely drawn to this work and live these philosophies in their personal lives and lifestyle. “You can suss out the authentic ones from the quacks in the interview,” says Chavez. As you can imagine, the interview process might be a little different as well. Naturally, if you are hiring a reader of any kind (i.e., psychic, intuitive, astrology or tarot cards), you’ll want to get a reading from the practitioner and see how intuitive he or she really is. “We do several test treatments, not just one to be sure. You want to test their psychic or intuitive abilities on yourself first,” says Clark. The interview for the job itself needs to entail more of a heart-to-heart than you might normally have when hiring other types of therapists. “A great healer has a heart of service and that’s what I look for,” says Chavez. “I look for someone who really wants to help people and who believes in what they are doing, rather than just doing it to

ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS GUIDE

have another skill set. You want to ask why they are drawn to this modality. You can’t find that on a resume.” Don’t be afraid to rely on your own instincts either. “I interviewed a renowned body-worker, but we felt she was very cool, not warm, and that she didn’t have the service heart. We didn’t hire her because she didn’t have that special element,” adds Chavez.

Retaining Clients More so than with a traditional massage therapist or esthetician, an intuitive or energy healer — or other alternative practitioner — is likely to have their own private practice on the side. Their reputation from their private practice is the reason you probably hired them in the first place. This is why it’s important to have an agreement that prohibits them from bringing the clients they see at the spa into their private practice. “We have them sign an agreement that says they will protect our trade secrets and they can’t solicit our clients for their own business. It only happened once and it’s not worth trying to enforce, so you just have to try to hire good people,” says Borten. Enforcement is indeed a problem, but The Spa at Loretto appeals to the worker’s goodness when explaining the situation. “I explain the marketing dollars it took to buy that client and for them to solicit them for their own home practice is just not fair,” says Chavez. Take proper measures to vet your alternative practitioners to ensure that you provide your clients with a truly fulfilling and healing experience they can trust, as well as protect your spa’s credibility.

Poppy Seeds Deliver the Ultimate in Skin Care by Boldijarre Koronczay

Imagine walking through a field of flowers as tall as your shoulders. The vibrant red flowers, smaller than your palm, sway gently in the breeze. The flower petals flutter softly in the wind. Sunlight filters through the nearly sheer blooms. These unique flowers have an unusually dark center, filled with tiny black seeds. The romantic allure of poppy fields and the harvesting of poppy seeds is a centuries-old tradition, with historical roots found as far back as ancient Egypt. Hand-harvested from dried poppy flower buds, these delicate seeds are used sparingly as an accent flavor in culinary dishes across North America. In countries across Central Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, where the majority of poppy seeds are produced, these tiny treasures are a staple ingredient in desserts, pastries and main dishes. The rich content of vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that naturally occur in each poppy seed deliver incredible internal and external benefits.

NATURE’S TINY TREASURES

Nutritional Powerhouses — In spite of their tiny size, poppy seeds pack a powerful nutritional punch. Especially rich in iron, copper, magnesium potassium and zinc, they enhance the body’s absorption of antioxidants. High levels of B-complex vitamins help boost metabolism and mood. Poppy seeds have an especially unique composition, as 50 percent of the net weight is due to a concentration of essential fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acids. These essential fatty acids help lower LDL cholesterol or “bad cholesterol” in the blood — and the benefits don’t stop there.

Elements of

Nature by

Raquel Levy

Digging our hands into the soil, encountering a gentle wind, feeling the warmth of a kindling fire, getting lost in the ebb and flow of the waves... all of these things allow us to feel grounded and one with the universe. An ancient principle of Ayurveda explains why we connect so harmoniously to natural ingredients based on plants, herbs, minerals or water: what is outside is inside all of us. The elements of nature — sources of original life — are substances much like our underlying makeup in composition and character. You’ve likely already added natural ingredients or herbs into your treatments and have seen a positive response in your clients. Connecting them to the four elements — Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water — with original menu offerings adds additional value to your spa’s base principle of harmony, wholeness and well-being.

High Brow Service Interviewed by Blanca Diaz-Martinez, Territory Manager for Chella Brow and Eye Collection

When did you decide to implement makeup into your spa?

How do you promote your makeup services?

We’ve done makeup for 16 years, for as long as we’ve been open, and we recently implemented our first brow bar in September 2015.

We do a lot of makeup events, including several for charities. Clients will pay anywhere from $15 to $20 and 100 percent of those profits go to the chosen organization. We also promote our makeup services on social media.

How did you do it? We researched cosmetic lines, got a good team together and started doing bridal packages and theatrical makeup such as for Halloween. We do full makeup applications, consultations and the brow bar was a great add-on.

Why did you decide to implement makeup into the spa? I feel like makeup is a key in our industry, a staple. It’s like the outline to a painting, you can have great hair, great skin and great nails, but until you have makeup the painting is not finished. It’s the perfect finishing touch.

How do you select makeup artists? I study their portfolio and they go through an interview process. Most of the time I will have them bring a model to the interview and show me what they can do. I show them a picture of a look and have them do that look on the model. I also look for the right personality and bedside manner when it comes to dealing with clients.

What is the surface area of the makeup area compared to the rest of the spa? It’s a little less than 200 sq. feet and located right in the middle of the spa. It’s a central eye point; wherever you are in the facility, you can see it.

What prompted you to choose that size? I worked with the space I had because I specifically wanted the makeup to be a focal point.

What kind of makeup treatments do you offer on the menu? We offer full makeup applications, eyes and lip and makeup consultations. We also do a consultation lesson where we teach the client how to do certain techniques. The artist will perform the look on one side of the face, for example winged eyeliner, and teach the client to duplicate it on the other side.

How popular are your makeup services? It’s about as popular as our nail and hair services and popularity has grown since we added the brow bar. Our makeup artists will do a complimentary brow session on our existing clients to show them the benefits.

What makeup services have the most success? Eyebrows, definitely. Even our clients who don’t like to wear a lot of makeup want to have their brows done, even some of our older clients who don’t have as much brow hair can color them in.

Are estheticians trained to promote makeup services after each treatment? Yes, by asking the guest if they’re familiar with our makeup lines and offering complimentary consultations as to what a guest might need.

How did you choose your makeup lines? I looked for very natural, plant-based lines with organic products for our makeup line. After trying a ton of eyebrow products over the years, I chose our brand because I feel they are one of the best brow lines in the market and very affordable.

Do you have special promotions for makeup? If so for what occasion and how long in advance do you prepare for these? We do special bridal packages where we bundle hair and makeup at a discounted rate, and we do a similar package deal for prom season as well.

How profitable are makeup services? Where does makeup rank in your spa revenue composition? I feel that they are highly profitable. For us, makeup services make up 25 to 30 percent of our total revenue.

products you sell are better than anything else she has in her beauty closet. Next, fill in the gaps. Maybe she’s finishing a foundation but needs a great concealer to accompany it. Or maybe she’s missing the perfect eyeliner? Once you have established yourself as an expert, this client is easy to convert to a new product line.

The Adventurous, Experimental Client, aka

“The Diva” This client is a favorite among beauty professionals. She loves what’s hot, what’s new, what’s now! She wants to know the latest trends and any fresh tips and tricks you might have. She can quote the newest techniques from YouTube beauty gurus and knows which products are favored by the hottest stars. Let her know about any press mentions of the products you retail, as this will make an impression on the diva client. Give her the lowdown on how to create the hippest eye makeup and the lip color worn by her favorite celebrity! Your facility will soon become her beauty mecca, the place she comes to feel glamorous, and she’ll be hooked as a regular purchaser.

Once you have established yourself as an expert, this client is easy to convert to a new product line. The Makeover Miracle Client This client is easy to identify because she’s sporting the eyeshadows of yesteryear. She needs more hands-on assistance than your other clients. She has likely been misguided by another beauty professional or simply hasn’t changed her look in years — possibly decades. She needs a complete makeover, so be ready for the task. It’s important to be delicate so as not to insult or offend her. Ask open-ended questions about the look she is going for and nail down a new image! Ask her if she prefers a look that is more natural, glamorous, classic or fun. Take the opportunity to show her new techniques and tools to assist in creating it. 126
