As estheticians, it's important to know how to treat all skin types, including various skin conditions brought up by changes in hormones. This month's Guide is all about Menopausal Skin, including the stages of menopause and its effects on the skin and how to treat conditions like acne, dryness & dehydration, and increased sensitivity. By better understanding these effects, you can help your clients feel more comfortable in their skin as they experience not so comfortable changes in their bodies. Spas and esthetic clinics are a wellness sanctuary for many to unwind and achieve beautiful, glowing skin. But what about those looking to treat chronic pain? Many spa-goers look for pain-relieving methods to feel good physically so that they can live a happier and healthier life. This month we are going behind the pain relief method with John Schrieber, LMT, founder, and owner of the Schreiber Pain Relief Institute. We are also learning about the effects of TMJ and how to treat it with massage. If you are interested in adding techniques like buccal and other facial muscle massages to your services, this is an excellent place to start. Check out our articles Edible Beauty and Nitric Oxide for Beauty and Health to learn more about achieving healthy skin from the inside out. Supplements in skincare are growing more popular and can be a great new avenue to explore for your business. We've also got something special for our esty newbies or estheticians looking to land their dream job. Sometimes all it takes is a clear and concise plan to achieve your goals! I hope you enjoy this month's issue. Happy March!

EDIBLE BEAUTY Supplements and food for healthy skin by Kara McLucas Mark
There always seems to be a powder, pill, or potion to grant us a small taste from the “Fountain of Youth”. Edible beauty is something that is taking the skincare industry by storm, but what is fact and what is proverbial “snake oil”. While the FDA does not substantiate some of the claims of these items, the science on how our body uses vitamins, proteins, and minerals makes a convincing argument that we are, in fact, what we eat. When it comes to supplements, usually there is a focus regarding detoxifying the body, reducing water weight, boosting metabolism, heart health, and a myriad of other bodily perks. Rarely do we think about feeding the skin, which is the largest organ in the body and protects us from all types of nasty things. But what does it need? What does it use? Being specific in what we feed it can be a daunting task; but don’t worry I’ve broken it down some.

COLLAGEN Aging in many ways is a wound, a wound to our vanity and a wound to our collagen and elastin stores. Collagen is a protein that makes up 80 percent of our skin and works symbiotically with elastin. These two power houses make up our connective tissues and help keep us youthful. Collagen supplementation can help reduce wrinkle formation, hydration of skin, and even help with bones and joints. The amino acid profile in these supplements is typically much shorter and more absorbable by our bloodstream. It is a long-term relationship; you can’t have one scoop and it does all these things immediately. It takes at least a month of daily supplementation to see the benefits. Collagen can be supplemented by pill or powder. Typically, powder is more widely found and contains a higher dosage. Collagen comes mainly from bovine sources but sometimes fish. These types of collagen are more effective and typically come with additional amino acids that help the body use and build on it. Did you know that out of the 21 amino acids your body can make all but 9? Collagen and amino acids can be found in complete protein sources such as beef, chicken, eggs, and in bone broth. Unfortunately for those following a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle there are no plant-based collagens but there are other things to ingest to help slow the aging process, like antioxidants.
in many different types of fruits and vegetables like berries, leafy greens, and some nuts. While most antioxidants are applied topically, ingesting them is a more efficient way to get them deeper into the skin and create that glow from within.
B VITAMINS Another portion of the “pill or plate of youth” are B vitamins. B vitamins are so important for the functionality of your skin. Most of the time when you see hair, skin, and nail supplements , they just have 3 pieces of the expansive palate of edible beauty: biotin, vitamin c, and B12. While biotin and B12 are essential for cellular activity and creating strong nails and hair, they also need other vitamins to do their jobs efficiently. Most B vitamins are responsible for cell proliferation, carbohydrate metabolization, anti-inflammatory reactions, as well as being sure that the right amount of moisture stays within the skin. A lack of any B vitamin causes dermatitis, dry flaky skin, and acne; just to name a few. But where do you find B vitamins outside of supplements? Almonds, dark leafy greens, whole grains, and eggs.
are known to be helpful in reducing inflammation, maintaining the skin barrier, as well as combating skin sensitivity to UV damage. You can find these fatty acids mainly in fatty fish such as salmon and tuna, in nuts like chia seeds and walnuts, as well as in avocados. Eating a well-balanced diet is always the best way to get any nutrients your body may need. However, if you have food allergies, dietary convictions, or are a picky eater, then supplementation is a great option to maintain your health. It is important to do research on any type of supplementation you want to add to your diet or may be suggesting to clients. When in doubt consult a healthcare professional, especially if there are underlying conditions. Edible beauty is easy to find, so slowing down the ageing process can be just a bite away!

ANTIOXIDANTS Antioxidants can be found in many natural food sources as well as in pill form. The most common antioxidants are also vitamins such as A, C, and E. Antioxidants can provide additional benefits such as brightening, moisturizing, and soothing the skin. Just as important, if not more, antioxidants have the ability to negate the effects of free radicals within the body. Free radicals are responsible for causing instability within our skin by stealing nutrients and causing stress. Antioxidants are found LNEonline.com

THE DASHSQUAD Before opening, the spa spent six weeks training its staff to perform all of the services that Dashbar has to offer, in under 60 minutes, of course. Now that the spa is open, “we have monthly team meetings and weekly team performance meetings to ensure everyone stays up to date on progress, goals, and achievements,” says Olivia. Staff performance as a team is reviewed on a weekly basis and individual feedback is given monthly based on customer feedback and room for improvement. The staff receives weekly incentives like bonuses and gift cards for meeting sale and service enhancement goals.

bars and art galleries to fashionable boutiques, there is a lot of foot traffic in the popular Miami area. The salon-spa’s prime location paired with its niche for quick, high-quality services is sure to bring guests in, but what other marketing techniques does the beauty bar partake in? New on the scene, DashBar is experimenting with a wide array of marketing avenues. “Our marketing technique as a start-up is to give all reasonable marketing avenues a try and see what works best for us. We have a unique concept and we’re always happy to learn what resonates with our guests. We don’t focus on only web or social media but a blend of the two as they work together. We have been using hyper-local influencers to market to locals while advertising online,” says Olivia.
Carla developed the idea for DashBar™ after recognizing that her routine beauty services were inefficient and not meeting the demands of her already busy lifestyle. Balancing a career, family, and more, she didn’t have the time to run to multiple salons regularly, so she made it her mission to create an innovative salon-spa that would give back the one thing no one can buy: time. Prior to founding DashBar, Carla spent over two decades running several successful business ventures in various industries that thrived under her leadership. Carla is a loving wife and mother, animal lover, and a committee member of the Selfless Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of foster youth through awareness and strategic partnerships. Carla has always been driven by a strong desire to empower women, and with DashBar, now she can. She hopes that her own self-made success story can inspire women from all walks of life to follow their dreams.

TRENDING TREATMENT Microcurrent Body Sculpting by Kara McLucas Mark
18
March2021

T
spa Trending Treatment
Microcurrent body sculpting has recently been capturing the industry by storm. Client bases everywhere are enticed by the idea of trimming the waistline, reducing cellulite, and tightening sagging skin without going into a gym. We all remember the ab belt craze of the early 2000s. Well, here it is backed by science and with newer technology and applications. All the antiquated ab belts are saying, “New look. Who’s this?”.
WHAT IS MICROCURRENT? Early on in our careers, most of us are taught about microcurrent facials and its rejuvenating effects, but this is a little deeper and different current. Microcurrent is a low-level electrical current that mimics the body’s charge. Once it reaches the dermal and muscular layers, it activates the release of ATP as a catalyst for cellular functions. ATP is the charge in our battery, and as we age, it diminishes. Increased ATP levels support cell metabolism, stimulate protein synthesis (remember collagen is a protein), and increase circulation and detoxification through the lymphatic system. In body contouring, it does all of this and re-educates muscle groups regarding muscle fiber strength, length, and position.
BENEFITS OF TREATMENT Who would not want more defined abs, slimmer arms, and tightened skin? And those are just a few of the benefits of microcurrent body contouring. Not only does this service aid in contouring those hard to manage areas, but it can also provide pain relief. Microcurrent has been used since the 60s as an aide to physical therapists helping others recover specific injuries. Not only does it re-educate muscle fiber, but it can teach damaged muscles how to hold positions they once held. So, in other words, if you have muscles that have been “stretched,” it helps them strengthen and return to a more contracted position. What the client will see is strengthened muscle as well as tightened skin. (It is worth mentioning that your client will see these results more significant if they are already following a healthy lifestyle or going on a fitness journey. Be sure to set
achievable and realistic expectations with your client.)
WHAT DO I GAIN BY ADDING IT TO MY PRACTICE? Most aestheticians become aestheticians because they want to help people, are intrigued by the skin, and love gadgets. Investing in a machine for microcurrent body sculpting is a substantial financial investment. Most body contouring treatments are sold as a package of 6 or more sessions. For each session, depending on location and demographics, base rates start at $100. With restrictions we have seen in the past year due to the pandemic, it is also an excellent “hands-off” treatment. You have minimal contact time with the patient, so for COVID restrictions, it is one of the “safer” treatments. There also doesn’t seem to be any additional certification needed other than being trained on the specific equipment. This is nice when you are looking at cost margins for the start-up of a body contouring program. It is a business driver with minimal risk and downtime. It is also a great first step for those aestheticians wary of breaking into the medical spa scene. It takes the microcurrent we were trained on for the face, our go-to anti-aging “umph”, and applies it to a broader area. We can speak to it and use it comfortably and with confidence. So, if you’re wondering if you should take the leap and add it to your practice or do it yourself, this may be your sign!

spa Behind the Mask
MASKNE TREATMENTS Modality Options to Increase Spa Revenue by Dr. Craig Wenborg Face mask acne is an entirely new clinical condition arising from the COVID-19 virus response. There is a strong need for care and savvy skin care professionals recognize the business opportunity. In this article, I will address service modalities for the treatment of this condition. Your clients are new to the practice of wearing a mask. Masks present a barrier collecting virus, bacteria, molds and fungus. Your clients will be utilizing a variety of different mask materials for varying amounts of time. Some clients will be wearing the mask for many hours continuously, while others will wear a mask intermittently. The effects on facial skin are a result of time worn, frequency of replacement and type of material.
THE EFFECTS OF FACE MASKS Mask wearing exposes skin to a number of undesirable effects. Skin is exposed to excess moisture, heat, microbial 20

proliferation, mechanical irritation, anaerobic environment and allergic stimulus. Tight fitting elastic band masks cause compression, impairing lymphatic drainage and proper blood flow. Skin which has evolved to be open and breathing, is now thrust into an unfamiliar environment. The mask creates a comodonogenic environment. Bacteria proliferation is promoted by moisture, heat and increased anaerobic environment. Bacteria are able to thrive where they were once held in check. Homeostasis balance is shifted in favor of the P Acne bacteria. These P acne bacteria thrive in the depths of pores and hair follicles.
MODALITY PROTOCOLS FOR MASKNE At my clinic, we have begun the process of modality-based protocol development for face mask acne and associated conditions. Modality protocols currently under development include the use of aqua exfoliation, oxygen mist and plas-
spa Behind the Mask ma. Each of these modalities represent a service provided by the spa. These services provide the esthetician with valuable income for the spa. Each modality provides for a specific element of client need. Aqua exfoliation deep cleanses pores, increases lymphatic drainage, increases blood flow and exfoliates the epidermis. Oxygen mist is used to deeply oxygenate the skin for microbe control, healthy glow and speed of recovery. Plasma is used for spot treatment of comedones.
Skin which has evolved to be open and breathing is now thrust into an unfamiliar environment. venturi effect mixes the oxygen into the serum. This results in the creation of an oxygen rich mist which is channeled through a tip.
AQUA EXFOLIATION
PLASMA
Aqua exfoliation systems draw serums from canister stations. These serums are delivered to a hand piece for placement on the skin. Acid-based serum emulsifies the outer dead layers of skin. The hand piece has a vacuum side which then collects the serum. Serum and skin debris are returned to a collection canister. Hand pieces have tips designed to control the flow of the serum. There is an inflow port and a vacuum return port. Between the ports, there are channels designed to carry the liquid serum. Vacuum pressure allows for deep pore cleansing as well as mechanical traction of the skin for debris loosening. Skin is pulled against the edges of the tip resulting in a stretch effect. This stretch effect promotes lymphatic drainage and increased blood flow.
Plasma is new to skin care. Simply put, everything exists as a solid, liquid, vapor or plasma. Plasma is considered the fourth state of matter. The use of plasma in skin care is being investigated as a standalone modality. Plasma devices create a stream of electrons and protons. Specific comedones can be targeted for bacterial disruption. When the plasma generator is activated, a stream of electrons and protons is directionally emitted. Plasma devices have an emission head which is ergonomically designed to be placed over an active acne lesion. The plasma output is then directed into that lesion. The stream of electrons and protons causes disruption of the bacteria cell membrane. Bacteria are targeted and destroyed through cell membrane damage. Providing any of these modalities will get you started with promoting face mask acne care. If your spa has one of the modalities, begin promoting this service. If you have to purchase equipment consider your return on investment. Oxygen Facial is a relatively lowcost initial investment. Aqua Exfoliation can be a costly investment. Excessively high monthly loan payments cause higher per service fees or force you to hustle for more services. Low-end Aqua systems provide immediate return on investment but will present problems. These systems often provide poor fluid control and vacuum pressure. This combination creates a situation where
OXYGEN MIST Oxygen mist penetrates deep to the base of the pore raising tissue oxygen levels. This allows for the suppression of anaerobic bacteria. Skin is good at resisting wind but not good at resisting mist. The mist penetrates deep through the epidermis. These systems are three parts. An oxygen concentrator is used to create and provide unlimited 90% ground state oxygen at pressures necessary to drive a nebulizer or air brush. Within the application handpiece, a serum is placed. The pressurized oxygen spins the serum creating a venturi effect. The
as much serum is on the floor as on your clients face. General purchase recommendations are as follows. With oxygen systems, make sure you are purchasing an actual oxygen concentrator. Some systems being sold as oxygen facial only blow room air on the skin. South Korean manufacturers of Aqua Exfoliation systems provide a well manufactured system. You can expect precise serum control, at a middle of the road price. The condition we call face mask acne can be effectively treated with spa-based modalities. Modality driven procedures provide the skin care professional with service income. As I describe these modalities, I realize that many spas have the equipment already available within the spa. This means that immediate implementation can occur without capital outlay. Face mask acne is here for the foreseeable future. Spas should quickly jump on this service and promote it. There is a strong need for care with estheticians being the critical care givers of this service. Spas have been hard hit financially through shutdowns and lower client numbers. Promoting services to directly address this condition is a savvy business decision. Combining service modalities with retail products, represents the way to thrive during these troubling times.

WHAT LED YOU TO A CAREER IN MASSAGE THERAPY? When I was 20 years old, I was involved in a car accident. I sustained a lumbar strain and cervical whiplash. As a part of my recovery, I went for chiropractic care and while I was there, received massages for my injuries. The massage therapist and I soon became friends. I shared that I was developing an interest in massage therapy because of the success of our sessions. She encouraged me to practice for a few minutes on her neck. Afterwards, she told me that I had healing hands and that I was a natural for massage. Shortly after I quit my job in the Florida Service Management Vending program for the visually impaired and enrolled in massage therapy school. That was 1984 and I have been a massage therapist for the last 35 years. I knew even then that there would be a benefit to being a blind therapist. I was born sighted, but my vision gradually began to diminish at the age of 6. Eventually, it led to complete blindness. Nevertheless, as a visually impaired person, I always had an advantage in sports, art and other tactile activities because I was not distracted by visual cues. My hands became my eyes. As a massage therapist, my hands are precise tools, and I am more in tune with the body because of my heightened tactile perception.
WHAT KIND OF SERVICES DOES SCHREIBER PAIN RELIEF INSTITUTE OFFER? For the last 28 years, we have offered a clinical approach to massage therapy. Our focus is corrective soft therapy, stretching and restorative massage for stress management. Corrective Soft Tissue therapy is a way to understand and evaluate the body and discover what muscles are pulling the body into a position that leads to pain and dysfunction.
We also incorporate Active Isolated Stretching and Strengthening (AIS) into our sessions. This modality is the brainchild of Aaron Mattes and it is a revolutionary approach to stretching. I had the honor of studying with Mattes for 25 years and continually witness the incredible healing this technique brings to the body. A relaxation massage is what many people are familiar with when they have a treatment in a spa setting. The benefit of working with our Schreiber massage therapists is that they are all trained in the Schreiber Pain Relief Method (PRM) and, therefore, bring a greater awareness of how to reestablish muscular balance. This ultimately leads to a greater relaxation experience than most would have in a typical Swedish massage.
WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER MASSAGE THERAPISTS? We get results at the Schreiber Pain Institute. Results bring loyal clients and loyal clients refer their family and friends. We have an incredible referral base. For example, from April – December 2020, we averaged 30 new clients a month. I have the fortune of building a successful massage therapy practice. One of my passions is to teach massage therapists how they can also build a profitable business regardless if they work for themselves or within a spa setting.
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR PAIN RELIEF METHOD? I studied Neuromuscular Therapy with Judith DeLany and Paul St. John and other modalities such as Trager, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Active Isolated Stretching (AIS). PRM is the integration of these modalities combined with tried-and-true approaches developed

business Behind The Pain Relief Method from working on thousands of clients. We also developed unique assessment protocols to quickly assess the source and condition of the muscular imbalance. For 28 years, PRM has helped clients resolve conditions like lumbar pain, sciatica, temporal-mandibular joint disease, carpal tunnel syndrome and migraines.
HOW IS THIS METHOD DIFFERENT FROM OTHER THERAPEUTIC PAIN RELIEF MODALITIES? We have a full-body approach with multiple modalities vs a one-body area approach with a single modality. For example, when someone goes to a therapeutic session for neck pain, the therapist often exclusively focuses on the neck. When they come to us with neck pain, we focus on treating all of the body because we understand that neck pain does not always originate in the neck. We have also discovered that working the internal and external jaw helps to alleviate lower back pain. The body is all connected, and we miss an opportunity to bring lasting pain relief when we take the one-body area approach.
WHAT TYPE OF PAIN CAN BE TREATED WITH THESE METHODS? We use PRM to treat any type of pain from head to toe. We help runners, for example with their lower back, hip, knee and leg restrictions. We help people with tingling in the upper and lower extremities. I recently worked with a client who developed pain radiating down her leg during the 6-month COVID shelter-in-place time. She did a series of MRIs and ultrasounds. They tested her for leg conditions, blood clots, etc. The results all came back negative. When we assessed her, we discovered that her pain stemmed from a nerve entrapment. We treated her in a 60-minute session, and she was able walk out of my office pain free for the first time in months.
26
March2021
LNEonline.com
HOW QUICKLY DO PEOPLE TYPICALLY FEEL RESULTS FOR YOUR PRM METHOD? It depends on the severity of the condition. Nevertheless, more than 90% of the time clients get pain relief immediately. After the initial series of treatments, most patients get on a maintenance schedule where they come in for sessions once every 3-4 weeks. The length of the results depends on how committed they are to the home care routines we recommend at the session.
HOW CAN THIS TECHNIQUE BE INTEGRATED INTO THE SPA SETTING? The spa setting is a perfect place to integrate PRM because it allows spas to truly support the wellness of the guest. Most people in America suffer from chronic pain. Spas play an important role as a bridge between beauty and health/wellness. As people come to receive other modalities, they can be introduced to an opportunity that can help them get out of pain.
dation is to complete the 12-hour PRM Assessment course. After completing this course, the effectiveness of their massage therapy sessions will increase. PRM’s aim is to help therapists understand and treat the causes and effects of pain in common chronic conditions. This involves more training in order for the therapist to be proficient.
DOES PRM OFFER CEUS? Yes, we are a NCBTMB Approved Provider for massage therapy. We are also a Florida state approved CEU provider for massage therapists, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants as well as a member of the Alliance For Massage Therapy Educators (AFMTE).

of career did you envision for yourself when you decided to get into esthetics? There are many avenues you could choose when it comes to the world of beauty. Once you know what you want, you can make your plan and put it into action. If you are unsure, research and find people in the industry. You’d be surprised and delighted to know there are folks out there who would happily take the time to answer your questions, and perhaps even mentor you along the way.
written thank you note will make you stand out and shine! Buy a couple of packs of beautiful note cards and a book of stamps and keep them on your desk. Having an attitude of gratitude is always a plus. Going that extra step to put pen to paper is an elegant, classy thing to do that will be a wow factor to the recipient. It will make you memorable, and people want to help those who express thankfulness.
pay your dues and put in time and effort to work your way up. You may have to start out in a less than ideal job, however, make it a point to “bloom where you’re planted.” Do that job as if you love it and you love every single person you work with. Remember, success breeds more success.

What is it like being a male esthetician entering a femaledominated profession? What advice would you give to other aspiring male estheticians? This is something I get asked a lot. The esthetics industry is definitely a femaledominated space and it’s not such a bad thing. I have 5 younger sisters, yes 5, and I love seeing such female empowerment because we always need more of it to go around. With that being said, I found that it has worked to my advantage - being a man in a sea of ladies, it is easy for me to stand out. For any aspiring male practitioners, my advice is to not be intimidated and to go for it. Fear will stunt anyone’s growth!
What is your skincare philosophy? Immediately after getting my esthetics license, I got my first job at a very holistic practice and then at a med spa shortly after. Working on opposite sides of the esthetics spectrum, I learned I fell right in the middle. My philosophy is really threefold: to stimulate the lymphatic system, to energize skin cells and to tone facial muscles. I believe in rebuilding the skin, rather than breaking it down. This is why I truly only invest in and utilize the most effective noninvasive technologies to make sure my clients are the best version of themselves from the inside out.
How has Marconi Castle grown and what is in store for the future? I love this question because it proves that growth is not always a glamorous ride. When I opened Marconi Castle, I had no absolutely clue what I was doing! I quit my last job with no backup plan and I knew I just had to do it. I took my first client with just $72 to my name, using my own personal products because I couldn’t afford to make an opening order. Renting a room was great but in a year, I outgrew it and I’m now in my studio space. Currently, I’m hiring an esthetician to start building a team.
SPOTLIGHT
Marconi Rodas from Marconi Castle in Chelsea, MA. Where are you located and how long has your business been open? Marconi Castle is located in Chelsea, MA right outside of Boston. I opened the studio in 2018, the very first skincare focused esthetics practice in the city’s history. For me, it really came full circle in that moment. I grew up in the same city and wanted to give back to the community that is so near and dear to me. What types of treatments do you offer and what is your popular treatment? Each of my treatments are uniquely customized according to the condition of a client’s skin. I mainly incorporate LED light therapy, microcurrent and the DMK Enzyme individually or a combination in most of my services. I also strongly believe that facial massage is an essential part of any skincare treatment. “The Ultimate” treatment is my 36

Menopausal Skin Guide
Menopausal Skin The stages of menopause
and its effects on the skin by Joanna Kula
Menopause is a topic that’s often overlooked in esthetics school, even though 100% of women will experience it in their lifetime. As skincare professionals, we must learn and understand the various skin changes associated with it to properly guide our clients and address their skincare needs at every stage of life.

Menopausal Skin Guide
What is menopause? Menopause means the “ceasing of menstruation.” A woman enters menopause when her ovaries stop releasing eggs and producing estrogen and progesterone. Menopause is a gradual process that can take many years and usually starts in a woman’s mid to late 40s and end somewhere around her 50s.
The Three States of Menopause PERIMENOPAUSE During this early stage of menopause, usually between 45 and 50, estrogen levels start to decline and become more erratic. Many women experience symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, irregular or missed periods, skin changes as well as emotional and physical changes. This stage may last anywhere from three to ten years. While female hormones decrease, androgens (mainly testosterone) remain unchecked and may cause some unpleasant side effects. These can often include adult acne on the jawline and chin, increased sebum production, and excess facial hair growth. The sebaceous glands and pores may also become larger, and the skin can become unbalanced with dry patches and oily areas. Many women experience rosacea symptoms and increased sensitivity as well.
healing, a decrease in hyaluronic acid production, and a higher susceptibility to free-radical damage. The skin starts to lose its firmness, tone, and vitality and is likely to become dry, dehydrated, fragile, and more pigmented as a result.
POSTMENOPAUSE When a woman has gone through menopause, she enters postmenopause, usually around age 51-55. Estrogen levels will remain stable but relatively low for the remainder of her life. From this point onward, collagen and elastin will continue to break down faster, and the production of these complex proteins will slow down significantly. The face may start to change shape due to a loss of bone and subcutaneous fat. As the skin loses elasticity and support, the cheeks, jawline, and neck usually start to drop, and wrinkles become deeper and more pronounced. Overall, post-menopausal skin will appear looser, thinner, and less vibrant.
SKINCARE AND AGE MANAGEMENT Understanding the physical and physiological changes in the skin before, during, and after menopause is the first step towards managing the skin’s natural aging process. In the next article, you will learn how to adequately address and mitigate these changes and guide your clients towards achieving a healthier complexion no matter what age.

MENOPAUSE A woman will reach menopause when her period stops for a full year. The average age of menopause is 51, but it can vary significantly based on the individual. At this stage, the estrogen levels plummet further, and symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, and skin thinning become more noticeable. Because estrogens play a significant role in skin physiology, the lack of this essential hormone profoundly affects the skin’s aging process. The most notable changes are a progressive loss of collagen and elastin, slower wound LNEonline.com

Menopausal Skin Guide
HORMONAL CHANGES The transition from perimenopause to menopause can be extremely stressful on the skin and body. As estrogen levels plummet, the skin may change drastically from month to month and will show signs of unbalance. It can be both dry and oily at the same time while exhibiting acne, visible capillaries, larger pores, and increased sensitivity. It’s common for clients to be frustrated with their skin during this time, but balancing the skin’s pH level, keeping the barrier intact, and getting regular professional treatments will be the most important in mitigating these hormonal negative effects changes.
MENOPAUSAL ACNE Acne associated with hormonal changes can be addressed with low-level professional peels and gentle at-home exfoliants. Alpha and beta-hydroxy acids such as lactic, mandelic, and salicylic acids are all shown to be effective. Because the skin will be more prone to dryness and flaking, it’s best to avoid harsh ingredients and medicated cleansers or scrubs, as these can strip the skin barrier and create unnecessary inflammation. OTC retinol formulas and Vitamin A can also be equally effective at treating menopausal acne and reducing aging signs.
DRYNESS & DEHYDRATION During and after menopause, not only will the epidermis become thinner, losing its ability to retain water, the skin will also produce less of its own NMFs, sebum, and hyaluronic acid. This two-fold effect is best treated with a double approach. The first goal is to increase the amount of available water and NMFs in the skin and the second is to keep as much of it inside as possible. This can be achieved by combining humectants and emollients and sealing them with occlusives. Humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, sodium PCA, and urea will bind to water like a magnet and pull moisture inside the cells. On the other hand, emollients, which are oil-
The transition from premenopause to menopause can be extremely stressful on the skin and body. soluble ingredients such as oils, esters, lipids, and fatty acids, will help replenish lost sebum and restore the skin barrier. Lastly, occlusive ingredients such as silicones, waxes, lanolin, petrolatum, and squalane will play a key role in preventing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) by trapping water and moisture inside the skin layers. Maintaining a healthy lipid barrier will be crucial, and avoiding anything that can potentially strip the skin.
REDNESS & SENSITIVITY During menopause, increased capillary activity and rosacea symptoms can flare up due to excessive flushing. This may also cause the skin to become more sensitized. The best approach is to reduce inflammation. Cold therapy and LED light therapy during professional treatments and at home can be an excellent choice to help calm, reduce redness, and address inflammation. Some of the best ingredients for inflammation and redness include the Centella Asiatica and Boswelia Serrata plant extracts, along with allantoin, beta-glucan, niacinamide, licorice, and salicylic acid.
aging ingredients that can really slow down the aging process and strengthen the skin when used consistently and for many years.
HEALTH & LIFESTYLE Lastly, clients going through menopause should explore different treatment options with their physician. Hormone replacement therapy, as well as oral medications, can help ease uncomfortable symptoms and make menopause easier for some women. Also, lifestyle changes should include daily movement, drinking plenty of water, getting enough Vitamin D, and eating a nutrient-dense diet of plants, proteins, omega-3s, and antioxidants. Some women choose to supplement with omega-3, biotin, and hyaluronic acid to moisturize and strengthen the skin from the inside. Finally, as the skin becomes more susceptible to freeradical and UV damage, sun exposure should be minimized. Because the skin is a dynamic organ, it’s never too late to start treating it. Even though it may be more challenging, it’s still possible to improve the skin well beyond menopause and help clients look and feel their best.
SAGGING & LOSS OF FIRMNESS Addressing loss of firmness due to the breakdown of collagen requires a longterm approach and more preventative measures. Because a woman will lose about 30% of collagen in the first five years of menopause, early intervention is key. Treatments that can help stimulate and support healthy collagen include micro-current, radio-frequency, micro-needling, LED light therapy, and laser treatments. In addition, topicals containing AHAs, retinol, peptides, vitamin c, and antioxidants are proven anti-

organic & wellness Tackling TMJ
TACKLING TMJ An introduction to treating temporomandibular joint disorders by John Schreiber
According to the National Health Institute (NIH), temporomandibular disorder (TMJD) stems from a collection of conditions that causes pain and dysfunction of the jaw and the surrounding muscles. The ‘temporo’ refers to temporal skull bones located on either side of the head, right in front of the ears. The ‘mandibular’ refers to the mandible or lower jawbone. Together these bones meet to create the temporomandibular joint. It assists us with opening and closing the mouth so that we can speak and chew.

organic & wellness Tackling TMJ It is estimated that 10 million people suffer from TMJD, and most of them are women. When there is trauma to or dysfunction of the joint, it can lead to jaw pain, locking of the jaw, structural damage to the joint, and even arthritis. A car accident, a fall, or a blow to the face are common examples of trauma that may result in TMJ disorder (TMJD). Stress, however, is one of the most significant factors. Grinding teeth from anxiety appear in 78% of TMJD cases. Treatment options range from surgery to prescription pain killers and muscle relaxants. However, the Schreiber Pain Institute offers a more holistic approach that gets clients out of pain and equips them with posttreatment homecare that prolongs the results.
Intake and Evaluation At the Schreiber Pain Institute, we start our new client sessions with an extensive intake interview. With TMJD, our first step is to evaluate whether trauma was involved in developing the condition. Injury can create symptoms in the short term and slowly progressing months or years after the initial trauma. As mentioned before, trauma can occur from a car accident, a fall, being hit in the head or face, persistent clenching of the jaw or grinding of the teeth during sleep, etc. If there is no history of trauma, then we look at posture. Improper posture over time can negatively impact the temporomandibular joint and create TMJD. There is an old saying, ‘the bucket does not overflow until the last drop.’ With TMJD, that last drop can happen after years of poor postural habits formed from how we sit, sleep or perform daily activities. Therefore, one of our first TMJ assessments is a postural evaluation. We often notice a tilted pelvis, rounded shoulders, and a curve in the lower back with TMJD. When we examine the body from a side view, we typically see arms resting in front of the body (rather than arms that naturally fall at
the side), and the head sitting forward of the body.
Treatment We begin treatment once we have completed the intake and assessment. Treatment is personalized to the patient’s circumstances around the development of their TMJD. Through trauma, TMJD often focuses on upper bodywork, unlike postural TMJD, where the whole body is treated from head to toe. Traumatic TMJ problems are treated differently depending on the type of injury and how it occurred. Trauma from a blow to the face, for example, may affect one or both sides of the face and cause discomfort when opening the mouth. It could also create neck pain but may not necessarily involve the shoulder. In this instance, the treatment would include bodywork for the face and neck. If the TMJ condition is related to a shoulder injury, a fall, and hitting your head, then treatment would include the shoulder, in addition to the face and neck. Both types of TMJD treatments involve intraoral work, anterior and posterior neck bodywork, and facial muscle massages. Stretching would also be recommended, along with gentle ex-
ercises and strengthening techniques that do not elicit any pain. Our treatment protocols have helped over 90% of our TMJD clients recover. There are a few times when the recovery period may take a little longer than most. If left unchecked, for example, TMJD can lead to structural changes in the tissue and bone. In these instances, more intensive homecare and longer treatment and recovery times may be required. The Schreiber Pain Relief Method (PRM) approach to treating TMJD makes a great addition to a spa service menu. People, especially women, frequently visit spas seeking holistic methods to stress management. When therapists are trained in the Schreiber PRM, they can help their guest get out of pain, lower their anxiety and stress, and return to a more optimal function. The US Beauty Market is headed to almost $130 billion in growth by 2030. Professional skincare will reach over $13.300 million by 2024. This is great news, especially coming out of a difficult year for estheticians, med-spas, cosmetic dermatology, and the aesthetics industry, due to COVID related issues. and medical-beauty devices are already in the works. These technologies are about how to deliver key ingredients into the skin to achieve effective results. There will be a multitude of new options and choices to offer clients for their skincare regimen. Nutrition should also be considered an option, as there is much upside potential for the professional beauty trade. The majority of products purchased for beauty are online, including products for beauty such as collagen. This opens up a tremendous opportunity for skin and spa professionals to incorporate a new skincare category into their practice. We already know that eating well is not only good for general health, but evidence continues to show that nutrition can also help keep your skin healthy and glowing. Since beauty is tied to nutrition and health, a new trending category referred to as “Nutricosmetics” is on the horizon.
NUTRICOSMETICS Are science-based supplements designed to deliver beauty and healthy aging benefits, emphasizing skin, hair, nails, and overall wellness from the inside-out? Since skin, hair, and nails are the last places to receive nutrients, proper absorption and a “delivery” system become more important, especially as we age. If your body does not absorb nutrient uptake properly, it makes it more difficult for nutrients to flow through your bloodstream and do what they can do to support healthier skin, hair, and nails. Your skin is the body’s largest “organ.” Blood Flow is vital to achieving healthier skin, and increased blood circulation helps you look and feel better, too. This leads us into the Science of Nitric Oxide and how (NO) can support the preventative effects of aging, not only for your skin but for your overall health.
WHAT IS NITRIC OXIDE? By definition, Nitric Oxide (NO) is a gas synthesized from the amino acid L-arginine by a group of enzymes known as nitric oxide synthases. It is a key “messenger” molecule in the cardiovascular system, assisting trillions of our cells in communicating with each other while supporting the body’s ability to absorb essential nutrients while enhancing blood flow and oxygen.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AS IT RELATES TO BEAUTY AND SKIN? Well, most beauty products are primarily designed to enhance skin at the surface. They do not address the building blocks within the body that keeps us looking healthier and feeling more vibrant. There are several ways to help support the production of nitric oxide in our bodies. Exercise, eating a diet rich in nitrates, and high-quality supplementation. Studies have shown that by the time we are 50 years of age, our body’s ability to produce (NO) declines by 50 percent. Studies have also demonstrated the many benefits of (NO) for anti-aging, skin cell renewal, and our immune system, to name a few.
According to Dr. Howard Peiper, N.D., “I believe that in the near future most people will be using a nitric oxide supplement for overall improvement in health. Since (NO) activates blood and oxygen flow throughout the body, stem cell rejuvenation occurs, which is also an added benefit for healthier skin. Therefore, a diet rich in nitrates, which converts to (NO), exercise, and quality supplementation are recommended.” By incorporating an educational approach for “beauty from the insideout”, we can help address clients' longer-term needs while adding a tremendous value proposition to our respective business practice.

THE MAGIC OF CHOCOLATE LASHES How they can help you change the shape of eyes by Mariia Teterina The eyelash extension industry has shown very high quality and rapid growth. From an ordinary procedure, it has become a real art in the beauty industry. Eyelash extensions not only extend the client’s eyelashes but also help solve many aesthetic problems. A professional lash artist’s main task is to harmonize the client’s appearance using eyelash design techniques. But what does eyelash design even mean? Eyelash design is a mix of different curves, lengths, volumes, and shades of artificial eyelashes, which helps create an individual lash map that perfectly matches the client’s appearance and creates an unforgettable look.

PLAYING WITH SHADES Let’s focus on the different shades of color eyelashes. Although eyelash design techniques are applicable to any color, let’s talk about traditional black eyelash extension set with the addition of several shades of brown eyelashes. Multicolor and brown eyelashes cannot be separated from the general eyelash design techniques. Playing with shades is a powerful design tool. Do you remember contouring in makeup? Makeup artists can achieve a radical change in appearance using it. It’s all the same with eyelash extensions.
BROWN LASHES Now let’s find out everything about the types of brown eyelashes. On the market, brown eyelashes are presented in different shades, from latte to dark chocolate. There are warmer shades and cooler ones, which differ in the amount of red and green pigments in them. You can try an easy experiment: take red and green paints and mix them in different proportions, and you will get completely different shades of brown color. This is all very important in deciding which shade of brown you will use on your client. For example, using warm shades on a client with a tendency of reddening will only make the problem worse. To use brown eyelashes as a design tool, you need to have several shades of them. So, how do you mix different shades of brown and black eyelashes with each other? The main magic of coloristics are all of the possibilities of mixing different shades of brown and black eyelashes. Through the play of colors, we can achieve interesting transitions and highlight accents. There are a few ways to mix different shades. Here are some examples!
EXAMPLE 1 Problem: Too narrow, long eyes. Solution: It is necessary to open the gaze, make the eyes more open, and round the shape. We need two shades of brown eyelashes (dark chocolate and cappuccino or others) and black eyelashes. For a round effect, the outer and inner corners start with small lengths. The maximum length is in the middle of the eye. Coloristics: We must use two techniques at the same time. 1) Horizontal gradient technique: we work from the corners of the eye to the middle - from light brown, gradually turning into dark chocolate, and then black in the middle.
Solution: It is necessary to raise the outer corners. Therefore, we need two shades of brown eyelashes and black. Then, we create the «squirrel» effect where the maximum length is slightly offset from the middle of the eye. Coloristics: In the area of the outer corner, the horizontal gradient technique is applied only on the lower row of eyelashes. From the lightest shade of brown (cappuccino), we go into the darker shade (dark chocolate) and black, which is located in the zone of maximum length. As a result, the shape of the eyes is close to almond-shaped, and the eyes no longer look sad!

2) Vertical gradient technique: we work only in the middle of the eye, and we make the bottom row in a lighter shade. As a result, the eye opens.
