skin Ingredient Spotlight

Ingredient Spotlight Glutathione by Kara McLucas-Mark

In the world of cream and potions, one always wants to smear whatever miracle cream or rub the next big gemstone tool across our face to slow the inevitability of aging. However, some of the hardest-hitting ingredients our body already makes! One of these is glutathione, an antioxidant that is here to save the day!

skin Ingredient Spotlight

Glutathione [gloo-tuh-thai-own] is a powerhouse peptide that our body makes. It is made of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine. It is created in the liver but benefits every cell in our body. It is an antioxidant, so it is always working to reduce oxidative stress, remove toxins and heavy metals, and protect our DNA. Unfortunately, levels of glutathione decrease in the body starting at 20! Poor nutrition, environmental pollution, stress, and age can also decrease the amount of glutathione in our bodies. This can lead to inflammation, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. It may feel like it has been bottled and put onto the market only recently, but the medical community has been using it for years to treat acute illnesses. They have higher levels of glutathione in mature populations of people who live well into their 80s. One study showed that higher levels of glutathione were related to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and fewer chronic illnesses. Simply put, glutathione levels are important to intrinsic and extrinsic aging. It has also been shown that lower levels can be linked to liver disease, chronic age-related diseases, certain pulmonary diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders. Without this tripeptide, our bodies are victims of oxidative stress and inflammation all throughout the body. In the skin, glutathione is used for skin lightening because it inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase in its production of pigment. Oxidative and environmental stress take heavy tolls on our skin by taking all that is good and leaving us with sullen, crinkled, and mottled skin. We all know or should be coming around to know that antioxidants do great things, and free radicals are very real. Glutathione applied topically is our knight in shining armor that leaves us with glowing and bright skin that has only a whisper of wrinkling. With all things antioxidant related there

is more than one way to get your tripeptide fix. As previously mentioned, glutathione's makeup is cysteine, glycine, and glutamine – one is already made in the body, cysteine, but glycine and glutamine need to come from other places. Think sulfurous foods – stinky but good for the body. These are going to be the almighty egg, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts. Nuts, legumes, and allium vegetables are also helpful for glutathione production. Keeping your liver healthy is also key to help your body remove toxins. Some supplements such as milk

thistle are touted to help detoxify the liver, and there was one study that shows whey protein is used in glutathione production. Another means of acquiring higher levels of glutathione is by intravenous infusion or intranasally inhalant. These methods are used most with therapybased treatments for preexisting treatments. However, some dermatologists and wellness spas do drip-based treat-

ments for more cosmetic and skin-related issues. One can also ingest glutathione through oral supplements. This is not the ideal method of consumption because it is broken down too much during digestion. There are liposomal supplements and skincare that allow better transdermal penetration and internal absorption. Look for acetyl-glutathione or acyl glutathione. No matter how you get glutathione, it's benefits are numerous and worth adding to your skincare regimen or menus of services.

skin Mushrooms in Skincare

Mushrooms in Skincare The secret to all of your beauty-woes is in these must-try ingredients by Dr. Jenelle Kim

12

May2021

LNEonline.com

skin Mushrooms in Skincare The healing powers of mushrooms have been utilized by Eastern cultures for centuries and have long been a staple of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Today, they’re gaining a new wave of attention, especially in skincare. Mushrooms are packed with nutrients including B vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and adaptogens. With over 150,000 known varieties offering a range of medicinal benefits, mushrooms can improve all aspects of wellness and be used as a topical solution for every skin type. Many brands are releasing mushroom-based skincare products for spa use to capture their anti-aging, complexion balancing, skin tightening, inflammation-reducing, and even collagen-boosting benefits.

How Mushrooms Work One reason mushrooms may have been slow to take off in Western skincare is that someone with expert knowledge must carefully formulate them. Mushrooms are an active ingredient that work at their optimum in a given formula when combined with other herbs and key ingredients that benefit the body in a balanced, synergistic effect. The formulator must possess the knowledge to choose the highest potency ingredients and mix them in perfectly proportioned combinations to release their medicinal potential. Improperly formulated herbal mixtures will not harm skin, but they will not produce optimal results either.

While all mushrooms are high in antioxidants, the Chaga mushroom is one of the highest sources of any plant that exists. It nourishes skin, improves cell rejuvenation, and helps repair wrinkles to restore a healthy and youthful glow. In East Asia, Shiitake mushrooms are synonymous with anti-aging. They’re densely packed with kojic acid, a natural substitute for hydroquinone. The Shiitake mushroom can lighten any type of hyperpigmentation, including sunspots and acne scars. Containing high amounts of antioxidants and antiinflammatories, Shiitake mushrooms can also calm skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea and guard all skin types against environmental damage. Mushrooms such as Cordyceps, Tremella, and Matsutake are not used in Western skincare products as often just yet, but they’re just as amazing for the skin. Cordyceps mushrooms contain a powerful bio-metabolite called cordycepin and antioxidant and antiaging compounds that reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots while improving cell turnover and helping remove dead skin. Tremella mushrooms can hold 500 times their weight in water, making them comparable to hyaluronic acid for skin hydration. The difference is that Tremella mushrooms have smaller particles to provide moisture to deeper layers of the skin. Tremellas inhibit melatonin

production, reducing hyperpigmentation and lightening skin better than vitamin C. Matsutake mushrooms also lighten skin to fix hyperpigmentation and even complexion while also increasing collagen production and improving skin’s elasticity.

Mushrooms for Spas If you want to take your spa services to the next level, it’s time to begin incorporating mushrooms. They’re frequently added to rejuvenating, brightening, and anti-aging in-spa and home treatment regimens in the form of a serum. Certain mushrooms can also be combined with potent active ingredients, such as retinol, for a powerful skin repair dose or applied as a face cream to moisturize and hydrate skin.

Dr. Jenelle Kim, DACM, L.Ac., is the founder and leader formulator for JBK Wellness Labs. Dr. Kim is carrying on the medical knowledge and wisdom of her lineage. Dr. Kim is devoted to integrating the philosophy, medical wisdom, and expertise of East Asia with the advancements of modern life and medicine of the West in order to touch and positively affect the lives of others. Dr. Kim is a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine and is Nationally Board Certified in Herbology, Oriental Medicine, and Acupuncture.

Mushrooms to Look for The most common mushrooms being used in today’s skincare are Reishi, Shiitake, and Chaga. Reishi, the Queen of Mushrooms, is the oldest known mushroom in herbal medicine and has been used in the East for over 2,000 years. It contains polysaccharides, molecules that boost the skin’s ability to maintain water, making it great for moisturizing and removing toxins. Reishi is also high in beta-glucans, enabling it to penetrate deeper into the skin layers to provide a longer-lasting solution to dryness. LNEonline.com

spa Spa of the Month Escape to the Wasatch where you will find a year-round luxury mountain resort dedicated to conservation, the arts, and community. There are plenty of activities to partake in, including the art studio, fly fishing, and seasonal activities like skiing, snowboarding, and horseback riding. Get lost in the thrill of spending time outdoors with friends and family, and when it is time to retreat, treat yourself to a spa service that will re energize and rejuvenate your mind and body. The Spa at Sundance is located above the main base, nestled in the Mandan Cabins of Timphaven Road. The spa menu offers an array of massages, body treatments, and facials, including an exclusive men’s facial tailored to the needs and challenges of a bearded man. The Spa at Sundance is quaint, serene, and therapeutic. Everything guests need to relax and restore.

Training

A menu that caters to the male clientele, The Spa at Sundance Resort has an Elevate your Beard facial (30 min, $85) to help men take their beards fame to the next level. The facial purifies the skin while invigorating and conditioning the beard. It is ideal for all skin types, and leaves the beard feeling soft, strong, and looking its best.

New employees must undergo many hours of training, including the breakdown and execution of each treatment, followed by an approval to be able to work with guests. Continued education training occurs two to four times yearly when representatives of the spa’s product lines are available to visit in person, an online session becomes available, or a new treatment is being integrated. The staff also has a say in which products are used in treatments. LaChell has implemented an open door policy for employees to provide feedback on what improvements can be made to streamline operations. “We understand the need to accommodate and appreciate employees because their energy flows right to the guest. We incentivize employees by offering a competitive wage, flexible hours, and resort wide discounts and perks,” says LaChell. All employees receive a complimentary yearlong season pass, and those with tenure receive an additional pass for a friend or family member. “There are two staff members on each day that work with our guests in an effort to preserve the meditative nature of our space and to ensure that each guest gets an intimate and tailored experience. Employees are even welcome to go on a hike or enjoy a few turns down the ski mountain in between services,” explains LaChell.

Special Events and Promotions

When it comes to marketing, the spa is promoted through the resort’s marketing team strategies. Resort guests receive discounts and booking information in their welcome packets. Social media posts and stories are

This is a custom massage allowing the therapist to utilize any specialized modalities. Common modalities may include Thai techniques, cranial sacral, and Chi Nei Tsang. “We developed proprietary massage blends with Tara Spa Therapy that correlate to elements you can experience while at Sundance; Sun, Mountain, Wind, and River,” says Spa Director LaChell Talley. business Spring Reset If you're feeling the need to get organized but feel a little overwhelmed, then this article is for you. While I don't consider myself an overly organized person who always has it together, there are a few things you can do now to help your business (and life) function better down the road and later in the year. Everyone will have a different approach to these things, but here are my best tips! Clean up your money/payment situation First, make sure you have a business bank account for all the money you accept from clients. This should not go into your personal account. Make sure you're accepting payments that are professional and easy to track, like square, PayPal, etc. Hire a tax person immediately. It is worth $100 a month to have someone handle your money. At the end of the year, you'll pay them to file everything the right way.

Spring Reset The ultimate organization checklist for the esthetician by Lorena Ashmore

24

May2021

LNEonline.com

Check-in on your website First and foremost, make sure your website is functioning. Ask yourself, is it clear, concise, and straight to the point? Does it list all your services and prices? Are there any spelling errors? How do the pictures look? Are they all the same size and look professional? Does everything flow, and is it enticing? These things are so important! I'd recommend having someone you trust look over everything and give you honest feedback. You really should have your website perfected before moving on to any part of your business. I see too many women get caught up in the fluff of owning a business, and they haven't first fine-tuned their website, AKA your main landing point for customers. While we're talking about your online presence - how is your social media? I know you're probably rolling your eyes right now, but to be fair, social media is the way of the world, and so you at least have to have some online presence beyond your website to show that you are staying current with the trends. You have to be intentional when it comes to social media if you want it to make an impact. It doesn't matter if you have five or 5k followers, but your business should be active on powerful platforms and be visible and cohesive. It doesn't need to be perfect, but

business Spring Reset it needs to be done and in a way that is both consistent and visually appealing. Pinterest helps me for social inspo when I'm feeling bored or uninspired, so I highly recommend utilizing it! I've also shared so many free graphics on my website that you can use as well! Declutter your products and any retail you sell Are there things you're holding onto that you don't use or products that just aren't selling? This is a great time to reevaluate what your potential customers and your current clients want from you. Having this clarity is priceless because I know I've been guilty of selling something selfishly when it's not a product my client needs, so I suggest getting to know your clients instead of blindly trying to sell them on things. This could mean offering them a survey via social or in person, or just straight up asking what they want from you during an appointment. Get on a schedule It's important to set specific hours for yourself even when you aren't taking clients. For example, I go to my office Monday, Tuesday and Thursday - those are my days to be productive. On Wednesdays, I stay home and work on my computer, and while my days are always different, I am now in a groove and know exactly what needs to be done and when. What has helped me is creating a loosely based content calendar. I try to plan out two weeks to a month in advance to get a big picture of what's to come. When we aren't taking clients, we are twiddling our thumbs or don't know what to do with our time. I set business hours that I work during and check my calendar to make sure I'm on schedule. Honestly, one of the hardest parts about being a solo owner is being organized and knowing what to do in your spare time when there's no one to tell you what to do. It requires selfdiscipline and a game plan, and a whole lot of purpose. Dig deep to find what

drives you, make a list of the most important things, and prioritize it. Have a place for everything This has really helped my business develop. I'll give you an example: All the vendors I work with, all the products I sell, any info regarding anything in my studio is all in my Google drive. Every photoshoot picture is in my Dropbox. All of my products are kept track of in Shopify. Meaning there is a purpose and place for everything so even when I'm feeling all over the place, my business is organized for anyone walking into it. This took me four years to focus on because, truthfully, my business got ahead of me before I was prepared. Keep your personal life organized too I know I talk a lot about business, but I believe your home life is just as important, so I've worked on keeping my home organized and my business over the last few years. I give myself a day during the week to really clean up shop at home. This allows me the weekends to enjoy my life a little bit more and not feel like I'm just cleaning all the time. I'm always picking up after myself, but my home never gets too out of control. Two things that have made all the difference for my life at home include having all my bills on autopay and any home products I constantly use on repeat are on subscription through Amazon, which means they show up at my door without me even having to think about it. This has been a lifesaver for my business and my home life. Focus on one thing at a time Doing one thing at a time has also been crucial for me. It's easy as an entrepreneur to want to do everything, so what I do is have a running list on my Google tasks or in a notebook of all the things I really want to do, and slowly but surely, I check one off at a time. More doesn't mean successful if none of it gets accomplished, so try and pick one big goal for the year and a few tiny ones to sprinkle throughout.

For example, my blog was something on my to-do list forever, and I just didn't have the bandwidth to do it. Now, here I am five years later writing a blog, but I had to organize my business before putting on another hat. Sometimes you have to get everything else in order before you can do things like this. Do you want to launch a product, get into training, or something entirely new and exciting? Get the boring stuff done FIRST, which is everything I've listed above.

A QUICK TIP When you're switching gears throughout the day, take 5 minutes to stretch, walk around and re-focus for the next project. BONUS A few tips from my very minimalistic, super numbers-driven fiancé, who is the MOST EFFICIENT man I've ever met: • Write everything down. It doesn't have to be fancy. I use the notes app and have one list. • Organize emails and use a file system so when you're done reading them, they don't just sit in your inbox. This way, they have a place to go in case you need to find it later on. I hope these tips help and motivate you to start 2021 off right!

BEHIND THE SPA DOOR Habits Skin Lab Miami, FL

26

May2021

LNEonline.com

business Behind the Spa Door

Where are you located? Our skin lab is located in the heart of Miami, FL on “Calle 8” in the up-andcoming neighborhood of Little Havana. Calle 8, also known as 8th Street, is the largest celebration of Latino culture in the United States and is the center of Cuban history. This is a street you hear about in many songs including Pitbull’s, and we chose this location because we wanted to be part of a movement that supported not only smaller businesses, but Latin-owned ones as well. Many new small businesses are opening around this area, and we believe the future will bring amazing opportunities to this vibrant neighborhood.

What is your skincare philosophy? Our skincare philosophy is divided into three main categories, what we call the three essential habits. The first habit is to “heal from within.” Our skin is ultimately a reflection of our daily habits, it shows us what is functioning and what is not functioning inside our bodies. If your skin is acting up, you should first take a step back

and go through your lifestyle, diet and stress levels and see if there is anything that is negatively affecting you. The second habit is “think healthy skin, not perfect skin,” because there is no such thing as perfect skin. Everyone is dealing with a skin concern, whether it be pores, acne, redness, sensitive skin, etc. The healing process takes time, and it’s important for everyone to understand at what stage of their healing process they might be in and what steps they should take. The third habit is “less is more,” and this is true for almost everyone out there. You do not need 10+ products in your skincare routine for it to be healthy or for you to glow. Find a few products that work for you and keep your routine simple, and your skin will thank you in the long run!

What sets your brand apart from others? We believe that what sets Habits apart from others is the fact that we truly understand what it feels like to struggle with a skin condition and wanting to achieve healthy skin, but not being able to afford the right treatments. We know

what it feels like to be under budget but to still want to buy the most expensive product out there because social media convinces us that this one product will fix all of our problems! That said, we decided to have our Skin Lab be a healing place for everyone. We keep our prices low and our quality high. We can do this by making our facials customizable and charging separately for add-ons so that people can decide what to get and what not to get, and still benefit from a full facial experience without having to spend all their money on a single visit. We truly believe we have made the facial experience better and more affordable in Miami by making our skin lab a skin haven for all! We also try everything before selling it in our store, and that is how we are able to recommend it to others without any doubt.

Tell us about your spa’s most popular treatment: The Gua Sha Facial + Scalp Massage is our most popular treatment. It’s perfect for all skin types and is a best-seller among aging skin because it helps promote circulation by waking up the skin while also leaving it vibrant and ready to glow. Teaching people new skin healing techniques makes us happy, so we love performing this treatment on our clients because it keeps them interested in learning about skin healing alternatives while also giving them the ultimate selfcare sensation. The Scalp Massage add-on is just an extra form of selfcare. The scalp can get dry too, so we use oils that deeply hydrate and nourish, while also promoting hair strength and growth. Combining both of these treatments is an amazing experience, we have had people fall asleep from relaxation during the treatments, and that to us is heaven!

business Behind the Spa Door

What does Clean Beauty mean to you? The skincare industry has evolved incredibly over the past years, and we are thankful for that! We believe that nowadays, there is a clean beauty alternative to any chemical-infused product out there. We like to stick with products that have no alcohol, sulfates, parabens or fragrances. Our goal is to use products that are gentle on the skin by avoiding common irritants as well as ingredients we are not familiar with as they can be harmful. That said, clean beauty to us is more than the ingredients, it is about being smart with the products you decide to apply to your skin. For instance, instead of using a serum or moisturizer filled with a plethora of ingredients that are deemed to hydrate your skin, you could pick one good facial oil and benefit from its hydrating and nourishing properties (and yes, even those with acne-prone skin could benefit from a good facial oil)! Our body oil is 100% natural and clean, contains no harsh ingredients, no 28

preservatives, no parabens and is cruelty-free. We source all ingredients from ethical farms and certified suppliers that offer the highest quality plant-based ingredients. Our Blossom Body Oil provides a rich dose of antioxidants to nourish, protect and brighten the skin. The product contains whole ingredients such as pure jojoba and rosehip oil that will ultimately deliver softer, smoother and more hydrated skin. The Blossom body scrub has additional Himalayan Sea Salt to help gently detoxify your skin & keep it smooth. At the end of the day, it should be about the small habits you incorporate to your skincare and your lifestyle, what makes you feel better and what brings the most benefits to your skin. Most, if not all of the time, clean beauty is the right answer.

What is your favorite skincare ingredient? Sea Buckthorn oil is by far our favorite skincare ingredient. It’s gentle, nourishing, acts as an exfoliator, and is an overall incredible oil to have in your skincare

routine or in any of your products! It is beneficial for all skin types and conditions as it promotes skin hydration, elasticity, cell regeneration and even helps treat acne. We currently have a seabuckthorn oil cleanser at our skin lab and it is our #1 product! Oil cleansing is a game changer!

What business advice would you give to another esthetician just starting out? Be yourself! The industry is extremely congested, and it could be easy to get lost in it. But at the end of the day, what matters is who you are, what your brand represents, what your clients need, and how to combine all ends in order to stay profitable, help your clients heal, and continue developing your dream. Even in uncertain times, as this pandemic has been, it is important to stay on top of everything, to avoid the negative thoughts or high stress levels and to continue moving forward with confidence.

The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and a scented massage every day. – Hippocrates

Tradeshow Talk Get the most out of your tradeshow experience with these insider tips!

FROM ATTENDEES: If you’re looking for that inspirational spark to boost your success, this is it! Every year I am inspired by all of the industry pioneers that come and speak at the Main Stage, but there’s also something so incredibly motivating being surrounded by fellow estheticians like myself who want to grow their business! As a spa owner, I find it very important for my team to seek educational opportunities that help them grow as professionals. We started attending tradeshows a few years back and find it to be such a rewarding experience that brings us closer together. Every year there’s something new to learn and something valuable to take back home to our spa. I love exploring new brands and trying new products to bring into my treatment room and keep things fresh. It’s why I love attending spa industry tradeshows. It’s like skincare galore! It can be a little bit overwhelming, which is why it’s important to ask as many questions as possible to find the right products.

FROM EXHIBITORS: We love taking this time to meet estheticians face to face and educate them about our products in person. It’s so much more than the products, but the connections we make. We want estheticians to know that we are here to support them and their businesses. Tradeshows are filled with eager-to-purchase prospects and clients, who are very interested in what you have to offer. I love the energy of the people and how much more likely they are to listen, network, and purchase your products My tip is to do something special that makes you memorable to the crowd. They’ll be visiting a lot of booths that day, so something as simple as a giveaway or branded apparel can help set you apart! 36

out the entire day, which break down the skin barrier that shields skin from external stressors. The mask is like a petri dish of bacteria, leading to blackheads, breakouts, clogged pores, redness, and skin irritation. Iso-Cell Recovery Solution can help because the formula contains healing minerals that the body cannot produce and creates a healthy environment for skin trapped underneath the mask. Potassium, magnesium, calcium, and zinc help eliminate redness and irritation caused by face coverings, calm breakouts, strengthen the skin barrier to combat dryness and sensitivity, and provide immediate relief and hydration to stressed skin.

3. How can estheticians create their own cocktail of serums? What are the do’s and don'ts?

INDUSTRY TALK with LE MIEUX COSMETICS JANEL LUU, CEO

1. What is Le Mieux Skin Care Philosophy? "Le Mieux" is a French word that translates as "the best” – and the brand is known for creating the BEST in resultsdriven, scientifically advanced formulas for each individual’s unique skin concerns. What makes a product the BEST? We believe it’s due to a sciencebased approach to working with how skin is built, all the way down to the mitochondria impacting the skin cell, as well as and going beyond texture or “feel” of the product. Le Mieux products help delay skin aging due to concentrated formulas 38

May2021

LNEonline.com

and delivery systems that provide transformative results without causing chronic inflammation that often happens with aggressive topical products. Le Mieux products are created to repair, regenerate, and target mitochondria’s impact on the skin, on a cellular level.

2. What are tips estheticians can share with their clients to help combat Maskne? With every spoken word, over 6 billion bacteria are spewed into the close-fitting face covering. For the first time, mask-wearing clients are exposed to massive amounts of bacteria through-

Environment and lifestyle impact skin all throughout the year, so customization is crucial—the same product isn’t sufficient all year long. Customization is key. Estheticians can cocktail Iso-Cell Recovery Solution with any Le Mieux classic serum or ampoule, and they can even mix together a customized blend for their clients to take home. When customizing, be sure to mix water-based products with water-based products, and oil-based products with oil-based products. Estheticians should make sure that the client uses sunscreen during the day, especially when cocktailing products with vitamin C. Need an “oxygen line-filler?” Estheticians can cocktail AND oxygenate skin at the same time: Le Mieux will soon launch an oxygen infuser tool. This oxygenating tool combines an activator and a serum that are dispensed in an oxygenized mist for skin from head to toe.

4. How should clients’ skincare routines change in spring and summer? After winter, clients should exfoliate two or three times a week, depend-

ing on skin sensitivity, so that serums can be absorbed more deeply and be more effective. In spring, to brighten up skin, pair up serums with a mild mandelic exfoliant (Perfect Renewal) or scrub (Microderm Exfoliant) or pad (Vita-C Clear Skin Pad), and then use a serum with vitamin C in the evening (and be sure to use sunscreen during the day), which will help brighten skin and strengthen it against environmental damage since more time will be spent outside. In summer, moisturizing skin is essential—without putting a heavy load of oils and waxes on skin. Amp up hydration with moisture-boosting ingredients that target skin’s NMF. Mineral-based toners, and serums with hyaluronic acid will create a moisture cushion against the dehydrating effects of summertime climates. This spring and summer, be ready to think outside the box during the reopening of spas. Estheticians can customize a signature serum. Estheticians can be innovative—no facial should ever be the same so that clients are motivated to come back for something new. Add a new “post-covid protocol”

that detoxifies and strengthens skin. Build customized serum cocktails for clients. Continue with virtual consultations to check with clients in case they have additional needs.

5. What are the top three ingredients of this year? Kombucha (Black Tea Ferment):

Balances skin & packed with antioxidants & vitamins to strengthen skin & create a luminous, dewy glow, minimize inflammation, reduce the look of skin imperfections, helps keep pores free from excess oil & blemish-causing bacteria, shield skin from environmental damage & pollution

Tranexamic Acid

Brightening powerhouse; addresses discoloration, melasma, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, splotchiness; evens out and reduces visible pigmentation or discoloration from Maskne.

Succinic Acid (from amber or sugar cane)

(Not and exfoliating acid) Antiinflammatory, antioxidant, anti-aging, and hydrating effects; Helps balance

sebum, reducing excess oil and congested pores that can lead to breakouts; helps combat acne without causing skin irritation, even for sensitive skin; works well with salicylic acid and with hyaluronic acid; hydrates skin, since it is similar to our skin’s own lipids, conditions, and softens especially when paired with HA; helps ward off environmental damage; helps encourage cellular renewal to increase firmness and elasticity.

6. What is next for the future of skincare? There is more and more proof that blue light, or HEV light, from tech devices like cell phones and computer screens really can damage skin. So, products that prevent or repair damage from HEV light from tech devices will be more and more essential. What is also very exciting is that mitochondria-impacting ingredients are also being introduced into products in order to impact skin on a molecular level. Consumers will become more educated through technology, such as advanced skin imaging systems. As time passes, the pendulum will swing back to a personal touch, with an individual customization of products for each season and every skin concern. Estheticians will be more actively embracing their power and influence in the skincare realm. In addition to spa treatments, they can do virtual consultations with clients, post videos, post before/after pictures, join affiliate programs. Go where the skincare industry is headed—don’t be left behind when the BEST can be right in front of you.

Esthetician Spotlight With Astrid Makenzi, Creator and Owner of The Holistica Hive Where are you located? Currently located in Clayton, NC. It’s the sweetest little town about 20 minutes south of Downtown Raleigh!

What inspired you to become an esthetician? I’ve been drawn to plants and oil mixtures since I was a little girl. I was surrounded by people who taught me a lot about holistic ways to care for yourself (ex: tea tree oil for wounds, oils to moisturize your skin and hair, drying herbs to make teas). I would give my grandma’s facials just for fun and cre42

ate my own concoctions of yogurt and honey for face masks at around age 9. When I was 21, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and suffered from a variety of health issues for a few years, which pushed me even further into learning about holistic ways to heal your body! The medications I was on really impacted my skin and I was met with an onset of adult acne that pushed me towards becoming an esthetician. It’s the dream job that I never knew I needed.

What is your skincare philosophy? I believe in hydrating your skin and keeping your skin barrier nourished no matter what. There are such misconceptions about drying out the skin, especially if you are dealing with acne, and I find that when we stop drying out the skin, the quicker it can heal!

What treatments do you offer? Currently (because of the pandemic), I am strictly offering one-hour virtual Skin Coaching Sessions, where I meet

cuses on being a place where people can come to love their skin and know that reaching a point where you are happy with your skin is possible!

What is your favorite skincare ingredient? It's hard to choose just one! I’d have to say that currently, my favorite skincare ingredient(s) are Lactic Acid and Seabuckthorn Oil. Both are amazing. Lactic Acid hydrates the skin and helps with resurfacing so really it benefits any skin type. Seabuckthorn Oil is just loaded with nutrients for the skin and is just one of those rich oils that does everything you need it to do.

What business advice would you give to another esthetician just starting out? Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. I was so nervous when I first started, specifically with social me-

dia, because I was afraid that people wouldn’t like what I was doing. But the second I got out there and started talking about what I love, I was honestly shocked at how much support and feedback I received! People will come and support someone who they see is passionate about their work and wants to make a difference!

What are some challenges you have faced and how do you overcome them? When you are first starting out, it’s hard to know what sort of “esthetician” you want to be. The world of esthetics can sort of make you want to group yourself into a certain box, like “organic skincare only” or “medical skincare only” but I think it’s important to just do what you feel is right and what you connect with! I try to post things that all people will be interested in and find helpful, no matter the type of person they are!

with clients dealing with all different types of skin, from acne to just normal maintenance. These have been so transformative for so many of my clients, and I’ve met so many amazing people. I plan on my skincare studio in Clayton, NC to open by the end of this summer! I will offer a variety of treatments including Gua Sha and Herbal Poultice Fusion facials and chemical peels. My treatments will be focused on nourishing the skin and getting it to the healthiest state possible!

What makes your brand unique? I have dealt first hand with health and skin issues throughout my entire life. I know how impactful it can be to not be comfortable in your own skin and the pain that certain skin issues can bring on in your life! The Holistica Hive foLNEonline.com

Lymphatic Drainage

A hands-on modality for cosmetic and plastic surgery body care by Selena Belisle

We are seeing an increase in requests for lymphatic drainage appointments with cosmetic and plastic surgeries such as liposuctions, liposculpture, the Brazilian butt lift, facelifts, excess skin removal, and general skin tightening procedures. That is because lymphatic drainage can help relieve the swelling that regularly occurs with cosmetic operations, which subsequently helps improve the healing process and decreases pain. The physical therapy sessions used for musculoskeletal surgeries are not readily available for cosmetic or plastic surgeries, but lymphatic drainage is.

Body Care guide Lymphatic drainage has provided many estheticians, massage therapists, bodyworkers, and cosmetologists new income and employment opportunities in a market where other spa or bodywork services for a post-cosmetic or plastic surgery client are extremely limited. The Long-Standing Ease of Lymphatic Drainage Practice Lymphatic drainage is a hands-on modality that is about 100 years old. These are not new techniques. Often referred to as Manual Lymphatic Drainage or MLD, a session is engaged by pumping joints when working on the arms or legs. Then, physical application of hand movements on bare skin is applied and repeated. It is simple to learn, easy to perform, and many techniques can be administered while sitting down. Because this service can provide pain relief to a suffering client, it is rewarding for both the client and practitioner. And adding lymphatic drainage to your repertoire can also diversify your professional work routine to avoid boredom and burnout from more traditional services. How does lymphatic drainage work? One of the body’s instinct reflexes to surgery, physical trauma, or invasive procedure is to swell. Swelling brings all the goods to help us heal. However, our bodies tend to overreact sometimes and provide too much swelling. Excessive swelling can cause pain or even create secondary injury. Our goal in lymphatic drainage bodywork is to simply reduce excess swelling. In addition to manual techniques applied directly to the client’s bare skin, the practitioner will usually elevate the affected area, such as an arm, leg, or face above the client’s heart, to help it further drain. Beyond post-surgical treatments, lymphatic drainage can temporarily relieve fine lines and wrinkles of the face. It can also help relieve any form of puffiness or bruising that may occur with laser treatments, tattooing,

Because this service can provide pain relief to a suffering client, it is rewarding for both the client and practitioner dermabrasion, peels, burns, excessive exfoliation, needling treatments, or cosmetic injections as long as active bleeding, infection, and a few other contraindications are not present. It is the ultimate wellness session, given its non-invasive approach. Some clients even enjoy a basic lymphatic drainage routine for overall well-being. A comprehensive course in lymphatic drainage can provide application techniques, physiology of how the lymphatic system works, a complete list of indications and contraindications, plus the science that proves the health benefits. The Perfect Client Clients who seek expensive plastic surgeries regularly do not mind spending a few hundred dollars more for lymphatic drainage appointments to relieve their pain and increase their chance of a speedy recovery. Post-surgery cosmetic clients are commonly recuperating at home and do not want to be seen in public. Accordingly, a practitioner can provide home visits for an upcharge if desired. Most clients can receive daily lymphatic drainage sessions for up to 2+ weeks post-surgery for the best result. And perhaps most important of all is that many of these clients cannot wait for your work or visit. You will become the highlight of their very lonely and painful day.

What more should I know about the practice of lymphatic drainage? You should check with your state licensing board to ensure that lymphatic drainage bodywork is included within your scope of practice before training or practicing. For estheticians and cosmetologists, lymphatic facial services may be an option if body sessions are prohibited within your licensed trade. Keep notes about which techniques and formulas were successful (or not) with your lymphatic drainage clients. Noting what worked best with each client and condition will help advance your skill level for more successful appointments and healing. Practice makes perfect so once you are trained, work on healthy clients first or those with minimally invasive procedures before accepting more compromised medical situations such as postsurgical clients. Lymphatic drainage can be fairly monotonous in application after extensive practice time. This monotony of experience will prove valuable once your postsurgical appointments start. Even after 25+ years of lymphatic drainage practice, I am still stunned sometimes over what I see or find. Being able to provide a robotic treatment while in shock over what I am seeing has proved helpful.

Selena Belisle is the founder of

How can I start practicing lymphatic drainage? Lymphatic drainage requires very little investment after initial training. Usually, whatever you need to provide a lymphatic drainage session is already used within your practice to provide other appointments, such as a table, sheets, bolster, or pillow.

Today, she teaches evidence-based, lymphatic drainage courses with over 25-years of lymphatic drainage research, practice, and experience.

Uplevel Your Body Treatments Three ways to enhance your clients’ body treatments and maximize revenue by Heather Kreider

Spa owners and managers face the ongoing pressures of staying current with industry trends and increasing revenue. Finding ways to freshen up your spa and wellness offerings regularly can help you meet both of those challenges head-on.

1. Prepare with a Focus on Exfoliation There is a valuable food for thought in what Abraham Lincoln once said, "Give

46

me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax." Preparation is critical for success in all business endeavors. Enhancing body treatments is no exception. As you know, exfoliation is the key to a good foundation within the skin. As we age, cell turnover rate rapidly declines, collagen production decreases, and dead skin cells accumulate. These changes cause fine lines and wrinkles.

Regular exfoliation helps to lessen the effects aging has on the skin. Prepare to begin body treatments with exfoliation. One of the most important steps in skincare, exfoliation loosens and removes corneocytes (the upper-most cells in the epidermis) and reveals softer, glowing, and refreshed skin. It also improves topical products' effectiveness, such as serums, creams, masks, and CBD products. By removing the top layer of skin, exfoliation allows products to penetrate more deeply.

Body Care guide

By making exfoliation a priority, never shortcutting best practices, you'll see optimal spa treatment results and deliver the exceptional spa experience every client deserves.

2. Add Intrigue with Add-Ons Add-on services help generate additional revenue for your spa. They also add a splash of creativity and uniqueness to your treatments. The options are nearly limitless! Add-ons need not be expensive for you or your clientele. Of course, your pricing will depend on your location and customer base. Generally, based on what my company's spa partners have told me, I believe add-ons that cost guests less than $25.00 stand the most chance of sales success. Consider incorporating add-ons such as: • Herbal poultices • Hand and foot treatments • Hot or cold stone and crystal treatments • Eye masks to reduce fine lines and edema

• Hot oil scalp massages • A relaxing cup of herbal hemp tea Also, cannabinoid therapy, through CBD products, is something spas are successfully incorporating into their add-on treatments (for example, a CBD hand and foot treatment offered during a body wrap or a hot oil scalp massage with CBD oil during a Swedish massage).

3. Give a Gift with Your Guest's Purchase Another creative way to enhance body treatments is to give a gift with purchase (GWP). GWP is an excellent tool for attracting new clients and deepening loyalty with existing guests. I've found that one-ounce travel-size products tend to yield the best outcomes in increased customer satisfaction and revenue. Consider offering an add-on treatment that includes a small-sized product that can be used within the treatment, with the remaining product sent home with the client. This strategy has been especially successful with treatments that include cannabinoid therapy.

For example: • Sending the remaining portion or a sample size of CBD massage oil home with a guest after doing a CBD hot stone foot massage during a body wrap. • Sending the remaining portion or a sample size of a topical CBD lotion that you've used on trigger points doing a deep tissue massage. GWS can work well with many different treatments, including body scrubs, body wraps, massages, manicures, and pedicures. By giving guests a little takehome surprise that allows them to try products at home, you can not only increase their loyalty but also drive more retail sales for your spa.

A NOTE ABOUT TAKING IT UP A NOTCH Absolutely vital before adding new elements to your treatment menu. is to ensure your spa staff is well-versed in both the protocols and products associated with them. With proper education and training, they will optimize the effectiveness and appeal of your fresh, new offerings and enhancements.

Heather Kreider, co-owner of Makes Scents Natural Spa Line and Hempfield Botanicals (CBD), has lived and breathed the spa industry for over 20 years. organic & wellness The Beauty Frequency

The Beauty Frequency Upgrading the world of beauty through vibrational shifts by Ashley Sachs

There is a positive, and in my opinion, a very welcomed energetic shift happening in the health, wellness, and beauty industry. This shift's initiation is a result of advanced science, technology, and a collective ascension of consciousness. Health and beauty are beginning to be seen with fresh new eyes, and we are no longer looking at an industry through a lens of fear, obligation, and exclusion. This shift has initiated the evolution and the uplifting of humanity. Every human being controls their own power switch to turn on optimum health, vibrant beauty, and overall well-being! I call this energetic shift; The Beauty Frequency. To tap into The Beauty Frequency, one must change the vibration of their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. To achieve these vibrational shifts in the four bodies, I use a combination of microcurrent, scalar energy, Reiki,

my intuitive energetic gifts, and selfdiscovery programs. Here's a breakdown of this four-part process:

UPGRADING THE PHYSICAL BODY From a scientific standpoint, beauty is a result of good health. There is no truer statement (and the foundation of The Beauty Frequency) than "when you feel good, you look good." To upgrade one's ability to create optimum health within their body, I use microcurrent to "turn one's bioenergetic station" to that of a healthy body. Scientists and doctors worldwide have discovered that each part of our body down to our cells is operating at specific frequencies. A high functioning cell operates at one frequency, and a low functioning or deteriorating cell operates at a different frequency. If you alter the frequency, you can alter the cell, organ, and system. These scientists and doctors have captured high-functioning cells' frequency and created a system (microcurrent) to direct these frequencies into our physical body. So even someone with lower functioning or deteriorating cells can hook themselves up to a microcurrent device and tap into the frequency of healthier functioning cells, creating healthier organs and systems within their body. Everything from beauty-related frequencies (skin elasticity, acne, aging, hair ,and nail growth) to sleep, focus, and pain-related frequencies are now available and accessible to everyone. The result of proficient organ and cellular function? Detoxification, purification, stress reduction, energy increase, healthy weight, and age reversal (to name a few); essentially, physical beauty.

UPGRADING THE MENTAL BODY Overall well-being does not solely rely on a healthy physical body. As a woman and as a beauty professional,

the beauty industry's past and present frequencies have neglected if not promoted unhealthy mental function. The proof is evidenced in every eight year old who thinks they're ugly or fat and is already learning how to pose in pictures; with every 12 year old who experiments with eating disorders or selfdestructive habits to cope with fitting in; in every 20 something (or younger) getting botox, filler or implants to try to look like a celebrity or for fear of aging; and with every adult who goes their entire life deriving their worth from their physical appearance. So how do we upgrade our mental bodies to The Beauty Frequency? Microcurrent plays a role here too. Just as scientists have discovered and

created an interactive program called The Awakened Beauty Program that takes one on an in-depth educational and self-discovery journey to rewire the mental body and awaken things within themself that will promote positive self-image and removal of judgment, comparison, self imposter syndrome, and any other lower beauty frequencies affecting how they see themselves and others.

captured the frequencies for optimum functioning physical bodies, they have also discovered and captured frequencies for a healthy mental body. These frequencies can also be tapped into through microcurrent to stimulate and increase things like inner strength & unity, mental balance, positive thoughts, feeling good, and contentment (to name a few). In addition to microcurrent, education is imperative for a mental body upgrade to The Beauty Frequency. I have

enced in our lifetime, science has proven through epigenetics that the trauma experienced by our ancestors (especially our mothers and grandmothers) is also passed down to us. When we do not process and release these layers of compiled emotions, disease is created in the body. And so, the emotional body must also be tended to for the upgrading process to work. There are microcurrent frequencies that can be used here too (like emotional well-being, stress, and care, to

organic & wellness The Beauty Frequency name a few), but this is also where I utilize the frequencies of emotionally balancing remedies such as Bach Flowers, Australian Bush Flowers, Alaskan Gem Elixirs as well as Reiki and chakra cleansing to help my clients release stuck emotional energy.

UPGRADING THE SPIRITUAL BODY Upgrading the spiritual body to The Beauty Frequency is the last but essential part of completing the upgrade. If the connection to oneself and others is missing, vibrating at The Beauty Frequency is not possible. Our Higher Self is who we would be if we were raised in the most loving, accepting, and supportive way that allowed for our gifts and abilities to naturally bloom without any trauma or negative interference. If, from a young age, we were taught to cultivate a positive relationship to our physical appearance and honor our bodies; if we were celebrated, respected, and praised for exactly who we are by all others; if we didn't experience any restrictions or setbacks to keep us back

from living the life we dream about (or our soul's calling) we would be living as our Higher Selves. Our Higher Selves act as our guide showing us the way towards living our best, healthiest lives and up to our fullest potential (the reason we're here). When we are connected to our Higher Selves, we see the world around us completely differently! We see beauty everywhere. Cleary why upgrading our spiritual bodies is an unskippable and transformational part of upgrading to The Beauty Frequency. Upgrading and connecting to the Spiritual Body can be activated through microcurrent via programs (soul wellbeing and the seven chakras), but this is where a Chakra Cleanse is the most helpful. A Chakra Cleanse is a powerful one-on-one session where I utilize Reiki, scalar frequencies, and my intuitive energetic gifts to read and guide a client to connect with their Higher Self.

IMPACT OF THE BEAUTY FREQUENCY My mission is to raise the vibration in the world of beauty, self-image, health,

and wellness by creating new experiences, and inspiring and guiding other health, wellness & beauty professionals to do the same, creating a ripple effect of The Beauty Frequency. Why? Because when one truly believes they are beautiful, when they feel their best and are in control of their health, they become superhuman beings. They are happier, kinder, accepting, loving, generous, and they act as mirrors for others to see what they are capable of and charging stations for others to plug into to upgrade to this frequency. The result is an upgrade to humanity as a whole, and no one can argue that humanity doesn't need an upgrade.

Skin Coaching 101 A holistic approach to understanding your client & their skin by Astrid Makenzi

organic & wellness Skin Coaching 101 Holistic is defined as "the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease." And so comes Holistic Esthetics, where we believe that looking at the whole picture will help us determine the various things that may be affecting our client's skin. We evaluate so many factors when creating a plan of action for a client, including skin history, health history, lifestyle, stress levels, diet, allergies, and more. By having a comprehensive understanding of your client's lifestyle, you can help guide them in making healthy decisions for their skin and decide what treatments would best suit them! I always start my Skin Coaching Sessions out with a few simple questions: "How does your skin make you feel? What do you feel you need help with?"... this way, you can get a sense of how your client feels and better support their skin healing process. By understanding your client's skin from their perspective, you can better understand how to interact with them! Below I breakdown a few areas of importance for me when talking with my clients!

MENTAL WELLBEING Acne has been proven to have a great deal of impact on certain people and their mental health. It can impact the way we view ourselves and the way we believe others few us. In a 1998 study through Psychiatry OPD of Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan 50 called "Prevalence of mental health problems in acne patients," they observed 50 subjects, ages 13-25. They found that an overwhelming 50% of patients were suffering from depression. In the same study, they noted a high percentage of general anxiety in acne sufferers. By touching base with your clients after and between treatments, you can remind them that they aren't alone in the process and that you are here to support them the best you can!

HYGIENE Whenever I tell a client that I want to discuss their hygiene habits or diet, there is usually a brief pause. I guess it's not a common question to be asked what your hygiene habits are, but it should be when it comes to the skin! With hygiene, I tend to start by asking if they have a habit of touching their skin throughout the day. Usually, I am met with a "yes" because let's face it, we are humans, and we pretty much have all been guilty of either touching our skin throughout the day or popping a pimple that is by no means ready to be popped! I then ask how often they change their pillowcase if they're washing their hands before starting their skin

By understanding your client's skin from their perspective, you can better understand how to interact with them routine and using a separate towel for their face vs. body. You'd be surprised how many people are making these tiny mistakes that may very well be impacting their skin!

selves! It's important that no one feels like they have to restrict themselves too much because this can actually lead to people not being as invested in taking care of their skin! After you've gotten a good understanding of where your client is at with their skin, it's important to remind them that the flaws they see are so minuscule compared to what others see. Remind them that their skin is beautiful and that it is possible to bring their skin into a healthier and happier state with time, patience, and the correct care! One of the most important factors as an esthetician is to make sure that we make our clients feel cared for and supported because giving advice and working with someone's skin is a very personal and vulnerable process. One of the best ways to help your clients feel supported would be to touch base with them every few weeks and ask them for a skin update! Hopefully, by the end of your next meeting with a new client, you have a fuller picture of where you will begin in terms of their skin treatment plan. Helping guide a client with their skin is so much more than just recommending the right skincare regimen. As we have learned, there are so many contributing factors that impact the health of the skin. Once we have as much information as possible, we can guide our clients down the road to healthier and happier skin while also making them feel supported and cared for along the way!

DIET When we get into diet, I check to see if they have any allergies or food intolerances and explain the importance of hydrating throughout the day. I also explain that for some people, things like dairy are known to cause inflammation and release a hormone called IGF-1 that can cause the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil, causing more inflammation in the skin. I make little suggestions to remove certain triggers for the skin, but leave it to the client to make those decisions for them-

TIPS FOR A SUBTLE MAKEUP LOOK 1.Start with a Clean Face It’s now time for your clients to pay more attention to their skincare. You want to make sure you emphasize proper cleansing, toning, and moisturizing to ensure a clean slate for your makeup. 2. Try a Primer and Concealer Instead Ask your client if they prefer to skip out on foundation for a primer instead. If they have a pretty even complexion, primer can even it out more and give it a brighter look. You can use a bit of concealer to cover any imperfections. Dab some concealer under the eyes to brighten them up, as masks tend to accentuate shadows there. Be sure to find the right color for your client to blend well since it won’t be going on the entire face. 3. Try a Smear-Proof Lipstick Light or nude-toned lipsticks that offer hydration are ideal when wearing a mask. Take it a step further and invest in smear-proof lipstick. Another tip is to use a tissue to blot off the excess lip product after application. You can also dust a little translucent powder to set the lipstick and lessen the chances of it smudging. 4. Bring Attention to the Eyes Think of the mask as a modern masquerade. You want to be bold, sultry, and mysterious with the eyes. There are so many new eye makeup trends in 2021 to help us achieve this. Colored lashes, graphic liner, 90s liner, bold colors, now is the time to really practice your artistry with the eyes and learn to accentuate your clients’ soulful features. 5. Invest in a Silk Mask When it comes to face masks and makeup, it’s all about the choices we make. This includes the type of fabric we choose to put on our faces. Silk is preferable over a cotton or synthetic 64

blend mask. It is cooling, hypoallergenic, and will absorb less moisture than cotton.

HOW TO MAKE FULL MAKEUP LAST LONGER If your clients want a full face of makeup, you can take a few steps to make the look last longer. 1. Set the moisturizer very lightly with translucent powder to keep the moisturizer in and not mix it with the primer and foundation. 2. Use a longevity setting spray to lock in the moisturizer and powder.

3. Opt for a gripping primer to really keep the makeup on the face. 4. Use any long-lasting foundation and concealer that is full coverage. This prevents makeup from coming off the face completely and is more forgiving than sheer coverage. 5. Use a damp sponge to melt the setting powder into the face, so it seeps through. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then lightly dust off the setting powder. 6. Finish off with some setting spray to lock in the look!
