MEN Have Skin

Marketing skincare to everyone by Lashelle Ullie The beauty industry is female dominated and, in all fairness, women may understand consistency and process in a way that men haven’t been forced to. This has been my experience as an esthetician and owner of The Lashelle Effect Atelier in Beverly Hills, California. I’ve been in this industry for over two decades. Women have reigned supreme for a long time, but I believe making it more inclusive for men is going to revolutionize the industry as a whole.

In the West, men have not been as in tune with skincare, historically. One of the catalysts for a more recent change is social media. Some social media platforms are like digital photo albums to the world, and modern men understand they can use their image to their advantage, and skin is a part of that image. One of our biggest opportunities to involve men is how we enhance the relationship with men and skincare. Skincare for men isn’t one dimensional, so how the industry appeals to masculinity can’t be one dimensional. We can maintain our focus on appealing to beauty, and in addition, appeal to men by marketing properly. I don’t think we know what that looks like in the beauty industry, but I suggest making skincare a par t of healthcare, increasing the emotional connection men have with their skin. We must show men how to stay ready instead of having to get ready when it’s too late. To start making that impact, I put together a men’s conference panel called Good Health Builds Wealth for The Beverly Hills Chamber of Commerce. I brought together a hypnotherapist, acupuncturist, and LED light therapy specialist, along with myself, to shed light on how we compartmentalize skincare. I wanted to continue to form the narrative that skincare is healthcare, and by attaching that to wealth, we were able to bring more men into the conversation. Everyone is interested in how your skin impacts you in other areas of life, especially financially. The skin is the largest organ on the body and the first thing anyone sees, no matter who you are. It needs to be nourished and maintained properly, as it has an impact on how people see you and, more importantly, on the relationship you have with yourself.

My passion to make space for men in the beauty industry is personal. I am a black gay man from humble beginnings and through my upbringing, my grandmother molded me into someone who is comfortable communicating and caring for anyone. My love for people and understanding of men is what allows me to be a trailblazer in this industry and to fulfill my purpose. Masculinity is currently in a renaissance period, and what it means to be a man is being redefined. Now is the time, and we must be intentional about having more men in this field. This includes black and brown men, as well as straight m e n, b e cause representation always matters. The more I see different men in the industry, the more comfort it provides for a wider range of clients to receive services. Now more than ever, I see young black men focused on getting well. This is a demographic that statistically hasn’t always been at the forefront of wellness. As an esthetician, I have an opportunity to help men feel inclusive from all aspects. I want them to see what I do as a viable source of income that allows you to make a way for yourself. I also want to help men, as consumers, heal at a higher rate by introducing them to more than just facials and massages. They should also be taught maintenance and healing through the skincare process.

An Esty’s First Year Journey: February This month, we catch up with our new esty bestie, Sofia Montero Rorrer, to see how she’s progressing. Hi Sofia! How's it going out in the field? Hello! Things are going a little slow right now as I am still job searching. I’ve been focusing on perfecting my makeup application and techniques for my friend’s wedding. Have you made any progress in your job search? I have found a few locations I think would be a great fit. I’m currently in the process of updating my resume and I plan on sending out applications soon. What are your next steps at the moment? At the moment, I want to spend a little more time on my knowledge of makeup and application, and going more in-depth with learning different products.

I also bought different textbooks online for more specific areas of skincare, such as acne, ingredients, and more. What are your favorite resources for fresh ideas? Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician? I have been a licensed esthetician for almost four years now! Aside from my own practice, I train estheticians through Patreon with a digital textbook I created. I am also on the education team for Skin Script Rx, where I travel around to schools to educate on products and ingredients. What inspired you to become an esthetician? I always felt like I would be best suited for a career that cares for or provides a service to people. I really like taking care of others, especially making them


feel more beautiful. I became really interested in skincare when I suddenly found myself with a full face of adult acne, and then I realized skincare was something I could actually go to school for! What beauty philosophy do you stand by? We’re all so used to seeing edited, filtered, curated content. No one really knows what a real face or body looks like anymore. I think I have the unique opportunity as someone who sees skin every day to educate and empower my clients to love and accept the realness of the skin and body they’re in. So, my philosophy would be that healthy skin is the goal and realness is beautiful. There’s no such thing as perfection, you’ll just waste your life comparing and tearing yourself apart. What is your favorite treatment? My favorite treatment that I offer is definitely the Anti-Aging Facial because it includes everything you could ever want! Dermaplane to remove vellus hair and dead skin, Enzyme Exfoliation to soften and brighten, Oxygen Infusion, mask with Cold Therapy, and Red Light Therapy to stimulate collagen and elastin. There needs to be a balance of strong professional treatments and ingredients while also giving your skin proper time to heal and regenerate. What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why? Dermaplaning is fantastic for that immediate glow and smoothness! The satisfaction of seeing the instant results it offers can be incredibly rewarding for both me and my client. It's great for exfoliation and removing dead

skin cells, as well as the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), leaving the skin feeling super soft and looking radiant. Clients love the immediate effect, as it can make their skin feel smoother and look brighter almost instantly. Plus, it enhances the absorption of skincare products, making subsequent treatments or product application more effective. What is your favorite part about working for your company? Working for yourself offers a wonderful sense of autonomy and flexibility. You have the freedom to set your own schedule, choose your clients, and tailor your services to align with your vision and values. The ability to make decisions independently and steer your business in the direction you desire can be incredibly rewarding. Plus, the feeling of accomplishment when you see your efforts directly contributing to the success of your own venture is truly fulfilling.
