Celebrating Wins in Esthetics

In the fast-paced world of skincare, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of clients, appointments, and treatments, often overlooking the small wins that come our way. As estheticians, we have the power to transform not just skin but also

lives, and acknowledging that impact—even in the smallest ways—can fuel both our practice and our personal well-being.

One win I’m grateful for this year is seeing my clients achieve transformative results with a holistic approach. As my solo esthetician business turns 3, I’m celebrating by taking time to reflect and plan more ways to support my community on their skincare journeys in meaningful ways.”

Why Gratitude Matters

Gratitude is more than just a feel-good emotion; it's a transformative mindset that can fundamentally shift how you approach your work, your clients, and yourself. By taking time to celebrate even the smallest daily successes, you build resilience, confidence, and a lasting sense of motivation. This practice can boost your energy, elevate your perspective, and help you navigate each day with a positive outlook. Whether it’s a kind word from a client, executing that perfect treatment, or managing a bustling schedule with grace, each of these moments is a reminder of your growth and dedication. Embracing gratitude means recognizing the progress you make every day, appreciating the impact you have on others, and honoring the journey, one meaningful moment at a time.

The Ripple Effect on Your Practice

When you center your mindset on gratitude, you begin to channel positive energy into every treatment you perform and every interaction you have with your clients. Gratitude has a powerful way of anchoring you in the present moment, allowing you to be fully attentive, receptive, and connected to each client’s unique needs and experiences. As they sense your positive energy, a natural atmosphere of trust and calm unfolds, enhancing their comfort and making each session more meaningful and impactful. This deepening connection not only elevates their experience but also fosters a loyal client base, opening the door for heartfelt referrals and building a reputation grounded in genuine care. The ripple effect of gratitude reaches beyond individual moments—strengthening client relationships, reinforcing your purpose, and creating a cycle of positivity that expands into new opportunities and moments of appreciation. Over time, gratitude becomes not just a practice but a profound source of fulfillment and inspiration, continuously enriching your personal and professional journey.

This year, I achieved a major milestone by relocating my business to a new city and opening my first storefront—truly a dream come true! I’m celebrating by embracing gratitude each day, especially on the tough ones. As a solo business owner, the journey has its challenges, but I’m constantly reminded of the beauty in the process and the healing space I’ve created for soulful skincare. Every step forward is a reason to celebrate!

Simple Ways to Celebrate Your Wins

1. Start a Gratitude Journal:

At the end of each day, write down three things that went well in your practice. It could be something as simple as mastering a new technique or a client expressing their satisfaction.

2. Reflect on Client Transformations:

Celebrate the progress your clients are making, even if the changes seem subtle. Remember, skin healing and improvement is a journey, and you’re guiding them through it.

3. Practice Self-Care:

Gratitude for yourself is just as important. Acknowledge the effort you put into your practice and take time to recharge, whether it’s a relaxing facial for yourself or just a quiet moment to unwind.

So, next time you finish a day, take a moment to reflect on your wins. Whether it’s the glowing review from a client, perfecting that skincare routine, or simply feeling good about the work you’ve done, know that every small success adds up. In the end, gratitude is what keeps you glowing from the inside out!

As a matter of fact, take some time to do this now by answering the following journal prompt!

What is one big or small win you'd like to celebrate this year in esthetics? How have you, or how are you planning to, celebrate this win for yourself?

One big win for me this year was purchasing my first commercial storefront for my business! Up until now I have always leased or ran my business out of my home, so I am excited to have something commercial to make my own. I celebrated this big win with my Husband, who surprised me with dinner out with friends and family. I also plan to host a big open house for all of my clients to join me in a grand opening of the new space!

Winter Skincare Essentials

Adapting Treatments and Skincare

for Colder Weather

As the colder months approach, our skin faces new challenges. The drop in temperature, low humidity, and indoor heating can wreak havoc, leading to dryness, irritation, and even seasonal acne flare-ups. As estheticians, it’s essential to modify skincare treatments to cater to these winter-specific needs, ensuring that clients’ skin remains healthy, hydrated, and glowing. Here’s how to adapt your treatments for the season.

Winter Skincare Essentials

Combating Dryness:

Cold air lacks moisture, causing the skin to lose hydration rapidly. This can lead to dry, flaky skin, making it essential to focus on boosting hydration and locking in moisture.

Recommended Treatments:

Hyaluronic Acid Facials: Hyaluronic acid is a powerhouse humectant that draws moisture into the skin. Including it in facials through serums, masks, or even hyaluronic acid-infused microdermabrasion treatments can significantly enhance hydration.

Oil-Based Products:

Transitioning to richer, oil-based cleansers and moisturizers is key during the winter months. Oils not only nourish the skin but also create a protective barrier that helps prevent water loss.

Hydrating Masks:

Consider adding extra hydrating masks to your treatments. Ingredients like honey, aloe vera, and shea butter can deeply moisturize and soothe the skin.

Cold Therapy:

Although winter might not seem like the time for cold therapy, it can actually help reduce inflammation and support hydration by stimulating blood circulation.

Hydrating Winter Glow Facial Protocol

Cleanse: Start with a nourishing, oil-based cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin.

Exfoliate: Use a gentle enzyme exfoliator (like papaya or pumpkin) to remove dead skin cells without irritation.

Toner: Apply a hydrating toner with rose water or hyaluronic acid to prep the skin for moisture.

Mask: Apply a deeply hydrating mask. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes.

Serum: Layer a hyaluronic acid serum followed by a niacinamide serum to enhance hydration & support the skin barrier.

Moisturize: Use a ceramide-rich moisturizer to lock in hydration and repair the lipid barrier.

Finish: End with a cold roller to calm and depuff, followed by a sunscreen with moisturizing properties.

Soothing Irritation:

With dry skin comes irritation. The compromised skin barrier struggles to keep irritants out and moisture in, leading to sensitivity and redness. Overexfoliation during the winter can worsen this, so it’s essential to adjust your approach.

Recommended Adjustments:

Switch to Gentle Exfoliation: Swap harsh scrubs or chemical peels for milder exfoliation techniques. Enzyme-based exfoliants, such as those derived from papaya or pineapple, can remove dead skin without causing irritation.

Barrier-Repairing Ingredients:

Incorporate barrier-repairing ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and squalane into treatments to support the skin’s natural defenses. These ingredients help restore the lipid barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss and irritation.

Managing Seasonal Acne:

While many associate winter with dry skin, some clients may experience seasonal acne flare-ups. The cold can cause the skin to produce more oil to compensate for moisture loss, clogging pores and triggering breakouts.

Tailored Treatments:

Hydrating Acne Treatments: Focus on balancing hydration without over-drying the skin. Look for non-comedogenic products that deliver moisture while controlling excess oil. Salicylic acid can still be beneficial, but pair it with soothing, hydrating ingredients like centella asiatica or green tea extract.

LED Light Therapy:

LED blue light therapy is a great addition to acne treatments during the winter, as it targets acnecausing bacteria without stripping the skin of its natural moisture.

Moisturizer with Acne-Fighting Properties:

Recommend a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer with anti-inflammatory ingredients such as tea tree oil or niacinamide to help manage breakouts while keeping the skin hydrated.

Barrier Repair Facial Protocol

Cleanse: Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that preserves the skin's natural oils.

Exfoliate: Perform minimal exfoliation, opting for a soft enzyme peel to avoid aggravating the skin.

Toner: Apply a calming toner containing chamomile or oat extract to soothe inflammation.

Serum: Apply a ceramide or squalane-based serum to support the skin's moisture barrier.

Mask: Use a calming, anti-inflammatory mask rich in oatmeal or calendula to reduce redness and irritation.

Moisturize: Finish with a rich, occlusive moisturizer containing ingredients like shea butter or jojoba oil to protect the skin from moisture loss.

Cold Therapy: Incorporate cold therapy, such as a cryotherapy facial, to reduce inflammation and lock in hydration.

At-Home Skincare Products to Recommend to Clients

When recommending at-home skincare products for clients during winter, it’s essential to focus on hydration, barrier repair, and gentle exfoliation. Offer a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser to prevent stripping the skin, and a hyaluronic acid serum to boost moisture retention. A rich, ceramide-packed moisturizer helps repair and protect the skin barrier from harsh weather, while hydrating masks can provide extra nourishment throughout the week. For the body, suggest moisturizing creams or oils with ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil to lock in moisture, paired with a gentle exfoliating scrub to maintain smooth, healthy skin. These products ensure clients can continue to care for their skin between treatments, keeping it hydrated and radiant all winter long.

Winter Acne-Fighting Facial Protocol

Cleanse: Start with a mild foaming or gel cleanser to clean the skin without over-stripping.

Exfoliate: Use a salicylic acid-based enzyme exfoliator to unclog pores without causing irritation.

Toner: Apply a soothing toner with witch hazel or tea tree oil to balance oil production.

LED Therapy: Incorporate blue light LED therapy to target acne-causing bacteria.

Serum: Apply a niacinamide serum to reduce oil production and inflammation while calming the skin.

Mask: Use a hydrating clay mask (like kaolin) infused with green tea or aloe to detoxify without overdrying.

Moisturize: Finish with a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer containing hyaluronic acid and tea tree oil.

Event-Ready

Treatments

Preparing Clients for Special Occasions with Flawless Treatments

When it comes to special occasions like weddings, galas, and holiday parties, achieving flawless skin is essential. For estheticians, preparing clients for these events requires a strategic and personalized approach to skincare that ensures a radiant and polished look.

When approaching event-ready facials, hydration and exfoliation are key to hydrating the skin and making it more radiant, as well as removing dead skin to help makeup go on smoother. These facials should also aim to provide stress relief for your client, helping them feel more relaxed and confident before their events. Whether you offer customized facials or a protocol specifically designed for special occasions, your clients will rely on you to deliver toptier treatments. To help them achieve their best skin for any big day, I’ve compiled a list of event-ready treatments, including HydraFacial, Glass Skin Facial protocols, Dermaplaning, and other specialized solutions.

Event Ready Treatments

Exfoliating Treatments

Microdermabrasion is a beautifully effective treatment for event-ready skin. This procedure involves the use of a specialized device that exfoliates the skin’s surface using fine crystals or a diamond-tipped wand. Microdermabrasion removes dead skin cells, promotes cell turnover, and helps improve skin texture and tone. It’s a great option for clients seeking a brighter complexion and smoother skin texture. The treatment usually begins with a thorough cleanse, followed by the microdermabrasion process to gently buff away dead skin.

Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation technique that removes dead skin cells and peach fuzz, resulting in a smoother and brighter complexion. This treatment helps makeup apply more evenly and enhances the effectiveness of other skincare products. It begins with a thorough cleanse to remove any makeup or impurities, followed by the use of a sterile surgical blade to gently scrape the surface of the skin. This removes dead cells and vellus hair, making way for serums or masks that can now penetrate more effectively. Dermaplaning is particularly effective for achieving a flawless surface, especially when combined with other treatments for a comprehensive approach.

Both microdermabrasion and dermaplaning are excellent modalities to include inside of your event-ready protocols and even can be combined together (microdermabrasion first and dermaplaning second), along with brightening, lifting, and hydrating masks and products to further achieve those flawless results. Of course, it is important to keep in mind those with more sensitive skin. Over exfoliation of the skin for individuals with certain skin conditions or sensitivities like active acne and severe rosacea should avoid dermaplaning, as the procedure could exacerbate these conditions or cause additional irritation.

Hydration All the Way

When prepping your client’s skin for an event, you can never go wrong with hydration. Hydrating face masks are essential for preparing skin for events, as they provide an

extra boost of moisture and help to plump and smooth the complexion. Depending on the client's skin type and needs, you can choose from masks that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera. These masks help to replenish the skin’s moisture levels, reduce dryness, and enhance the overall glow. Incorporating a hydrating mask into a pre-event treatment can leave the skin feeling refreshed and looking radiant.

For the combined effects of hydration and exfoliation, consider investing in a hydra facial machine. Renowned for its deep cleansing and hydrating benefits, the hydra facial is an excellent choice for event preparation. This treatment combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and hydration into a single session. It employs a specialized handpiece with a spiralized, suction-like mechanism that gently exfoliates the skin, removes dead cells and impurities, and simultaneously infuses nourishing serums deep into the skin. The process combines vacuum extraction for clearing clogged pores and hydrating serums enriched with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to enhance skin texture, improve hydration, and deliver a radiant complexion.

Glass Skin is IN

The Glass Skin Facial, inspired by K-beauty trends, aims to create an ultra-smooth, translucent complexion. This facial focuses on intense hydration, brightening, and refining the skin’s texture. It starts with a double cleanse to thoroughly remove impurities, followed by an exfoliating enzyme or chemical peel to refine the skin’s surface. Be sure to keep in mind the timing of your client’s event when deciding on this step and opt for a pre-party peel that is gentle with no downtime and no flaking. A hydrating toner is then applied to balance the skin and prepare it for deeper treatment. The next step involves layering brightening serums, such as vitamin C, and hydrating masks with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. A gentle facial massage is performed to enhance circulation, and an ultrasonic device can be

used to boost serum penetration. The treatment finishes with a lightweight moisturizer and a luminous primer for a dewy finish. The Glass Skin Facial is ideal for clients seeking a high-shine, flawless appearance perfect for special events.

Beyond these signature treatments, customizing skincare protocols based on the client’s unique needs is crucial. For those with sensitive skin conditions like rosacea and acne, hydrating and calming the skin is the best approach to avoid further irritation. One of my secret weapons is always a calming jelly mask that reduces redness and soothes the skin. LED light therapy can also reduce redness in the skin, while targeting inflammation. Oxygen facials deliver oxygen to the skin for a plumping and rejuvenating effect that makes the skin look more youthful and vibrant.

To ensure clients look their best on the day of the event, provide them with pre-event skincare tips. It is best to schedule treatments 3-5 days before the event to allow the skin time to calm down, especially after extractions. If the client comes in 1 to 2 days prior to their event or the same day, avoid extractions if possible and focus on megahydration, calming, de-puffing lifting, and brightening the skin as much as possible. As always, trust in your intuition and keep in mind that less is more. You can also provide clients with a small kit of essential products for touch-ups, such as a hydrating mist or blotting papers. With careful planning and expert care, you can ensure your clients shine brightly on their special day.

By incorporating treatments like HydraFacial, Glass Skin Facial protocols, and dermaplaning, and tailoring additional services to address specific concerns, you can help your clients achieve the flawless, radiant skin they desire for their most important events.

An Esty’s First Year Journey November

In her first year, Sofia reflects on mastering new skills, building her spa, and finding her niche while sharing insights on growth and supporting new estheticians.

What has been the most rewarding moment for you as an esthetician so far?

I believe the most rewarding moment has been when clients have expressed gratitude and enjoyment in the services I provide. It’s very fulfilling when I know I have helped people feel better about themselves.

How have you grown professionally in the past year, and what new skills or treatments have you mastered?

I have grown professionally in terms of establishing my business and spa space. The mobile space is really starting to come together and be exactly what I hoped and envisioned it to be. I have mastered doing lash lifts; they have been the most fun and quickest skill for me to practice.

What role has continuing education played in your development as an esthetician during your first year?

During my first year, continuing education has helped me keep up to date with any new techniques and products currently blooming in the industry. It also helps keep my memory and knowledge of techniques and theory refreshed in my mind.

What mistakes did you make in your first year, and how did they help you grow?

While I have officially mastered lash lifts, they were difficult to begin with. I had a hard time finding the right products that worked universally among my clients. I was also the only person in my

cosmetology class who couldn’t do lash extensions. I’ve always struggled with them, and it made me realize that there will be certain aspects of esthetics that I will be stronger in and some that I will not, and that’s perfectly fine.

Have you developed a niche or specialization within esthetics, and if so, how did you discover it?

I discovered that I love doing facials, including hydrojelly masks and LED light therapy. I found that clients tend to prefer adding on those extra services because they find it extremely relaxing, and it’s a very niche market that’s popular among estheticians online. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing to watch on social media, but clients find it helps calm them down if they are nervous.

What would you like to see more of in the industry to help first-year estheticians grow?

I think mentoring programs within the industry would help first-year estheticians flourish and feel more comfortable. For example, a licensed long-term esthetician providing a first-year esthetician the opportunity to shadow them or work under them. I also think workshops created for first-year estheticians, where they can mingle amongst each other and build strong connections, would be beneficial to help them grow their businesses.

It’s very fulfilling when I know I have helped people feel better about themselves.

Our master course is dedicated to the skin care pro seeking take their business to the next level! Deep dive into advanced skin carerelated topics and collaborate with other estheticians!

“Loved the class! It was very detailed and outlined perfectly. The educators were very knowledgeable and provided great information and answered questions very well.”

Esthetician Spotlight

What inspired you to pursue a career in esthetics?

I love skincare and helping other women glow and feel confident, so there really was no other option. I think it was written in the stars for me. Along with my own long-time struggles with acne that made me passionate to become the support that I didn’t have but needed through my skin journey.

How has your business evolved since you first started?

I first started my career working my way up at a local franchise face spa and brow bar. I went from the newbie sweeping floors and answering phone calls, to the manager training and mentoring our esthetician team while being fully booked and busy with loyal clients. It was a major evolution for me to go solo, which has allowed me the freedom to handpick my skincare and service offerings to best suit my clients’ needs. My business started with me selling gua sha stones during the pandemic as a way to stay connected, to creating my own website platform, and having my own treatment room to serve as a sanctuary for myself and my clients who I am so grateful for.

What is your skincare philosophy when it comes to treating clients' skin?

When treating clients’ skin, my philosophy is that skin care doesn’t have to be complicated in order to be effective and we don’t need to hurt the skin in order to help it. My skincare routines are always moisture barrier-focused while individualizing each client’s needs to achieve their short and long term skin goals.

What is your favorite type of skin to treat and why?

I love all skin. I’m fascinated with its innate ability to heal and restore itself. But I think acne-prone skin will always hold a special place in my heart because I am

so empathetic to what my acne clients are going through both physically and emotionally. It is also the best feeling when they are happy and clear and getting to see them grow into their glow.

What makes your facials stand out?

I think my facials stand out because they are a whole sensory experience that my clients really love and look forward to. They are a reset for the skin and soul. I strive to always create an environment where my clients feel both safe and seen so they leave fully refreshed and ready to take on the world.

Can you tell us how your holistic skin consultations were developed and how you empower clients to become their own skin healers?

My holistic skin consultations originally started during pandemic. Facials were locked down, but women were still in need and asking for skin guidance. As a holistic esthetician, self-healing is a key theme that comes up in my practice. My clients are women who want to learn how to take care of their skin inside and out, and I teach them the skincare foundations, mindset, and lifestyle shifts that might help them better achieve their goals and break up with old patterns that are no longer serving them. Dealing with skin issues can be very self-isolating and confusing and I’m here to help other women not feel alone and simplify things with them. It is also nice now to be able to cater to clients at a distance who are unable to come in for facials.

If you could describe yourself as an esthetician in three words, what would they be?

Compassionate, detailed, and fun.

zines. I think social media is a fun way to stay in the heart beat of what is trending among clients and see what other industry pros are talking about.

What advice would you give to new estheticians entering the industry today?

You will do just fine! Take it one step at a time. Your clients are people just like you, so treat them the way you want to be treated when you are sitting on the other end of the service chair. There is always something new to learn. And lastly, people might forget what you said or did, but they will always remember how you made them feel.

How do you stay on top of industry trends and innovations in skincare?

I love reading and self-researching through books, articles, and maga -

What has been your biggest challenge as an esthetician, and how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge has been believing in myself, and I am always working on overcoming feelings of imposter syndrome or not being enough. I saw a quote that said “feel the fear and do it anyway”, and It is something I try to live by. You’ll never know unless you try. My clients are also so uplifting and supportive, they make me feel like I can achieve anything and I want to be my best for them.

What role does continuing education play in your career as an esthetician?

It is absolutely everything. Continuing your niche-focused education and selfresearch are both what will set you apart and help you specialize in caring for the skin.

What are the most common skincare misconceptions you encounter, and how do you address them with your clients?

I think one popular misconception is that oily, or acne prone skin clients tend to stay away from using anything to hydrate or moisturize their skin thinking that it will make their skin “worse”. I address this, and any misconception or concern, by talking it out and educating my clients. For example letting the oily, or acne prone client know that

supporting their moisture barrier will help with hydration levels, which can help with congestion, inflammation, and balanced oils. We then get started on a skincare plan they are comfortable with, and they get to see for themselves the shift in their skin over time applying what they have learned.

How do you approach client retention and building long-term relationships?

To be honest, it is always something that has come natural to me. I think it is important to treat clients the way you would like to be treated, and consider the feelings and qualities associated with why you return to your service providers. If you can answer what makes YOU a repeat client, then you have the answers to how to build long-term relationships with your own clients.

What trends in skincare or wellness do you predict will shape the industry in the next few years?

I can see that more women are dissolving their filler and wanting natural alternatives to antiwrinkle ingestions such as Botox. I think over the next few years we will see an uprising of holistic skincare and embracing and enhancing natural beauty.

What advice would you give to esties for marketing their businesses online?

Technology has changed our lives in so many ways. In my business it has allowed me to connect to other like-minded people and communicate directly to my clients. My best advice to other esties would be that likes and followers do not equal booked appointments. I was booked out weeks and months ahead of time long before I had any followers at all. Word of mouth will always be your best advertisement. Also, you need to be yourself. You’ll never attract your ideal client if you are pretending to be something that you’re not on social media. So if dancing online makes you feel silly, don’t do it, but at the same time find ways to put yourself out there that showcase your skills and personality so that your current and potential clients can get to know you and feel like they are part of your story.

Editor’s Treatment of the Month

The Mood Spa Signature treatment is a luxurious sensory experience designed to melt away stress and bring you fully into the present moment. Every detail, from the scents in the room to the soothing sounds, felt meticulously curated to promote relaxation and connection.

This 90-minute session included a thorough scalp analysis, followed by a deep scalp massage that releases tension and promotes circulation, and a relaxing facial. As the expert hands of the therapist worked through my hair, all of my thoughts seemed to dissolve, and I became completely immersed in the experience. I finally understood the hype surrounding K-beauty head spa treatments; this level of pampering truly elevates self-care.

What I loved most was the attention to detail—the fragrances of the oils were absolutely delicious, and the therapist's gentle yet firm touch made me feel truly cared for. This treatment reminded me how vital it is to take time for ourselves and allow our minds to rest. It’s a perfect example of how the energy you bring to your clients, combined with intention and thoughtful care, can make a world of difference in their experience.
