Natural skin brighteners for postsummer treatments by Dawn Fields

Porcelain skin has been a sign of beauty throughout the ages. In Europe’s Elizabethan period, upper class women were known to whiten their face with ceruse, a deadly combination of vinegar and white lead, which gave them that milky complexion they sought. Today some might argue that women continue to put vanity ahead of safety when it comes to the color of their skin, and if a caramel tan is more of the desired look—at least in the West—the issue now comes down to sun damage, uneven pigmentation and those darker patches of skin that come with fun under the sun (not to mention age and other skin conditions such as melasma.

DAMAGE

Yet with all the fuss surrounding topical bleaching agents, many people seek alternatives to skin lightening by going the all-natural way (although touted as natural, pregnant women should seek approval from their physician before going for these skin brightening treatments).

NATURE’S WONDER Perhaps among the many promising ingredients to naturally brighten skin are licorice, lemon, resveratrol, green tea, and the controversial arbutin (a derivative of berries such as bearberry). Packed with antioxidants and vitamins that help speed cell turnover, these ingredients brighten sunspots, freckles and hyperpigmentation by resurfacing the skin. Niacinamide, or vitamin B, works as a melanin inhibitor, helping to limit pigment issues. Retinol, or vitamin A, is very effective in treating sun damage or pigmentation as it regulates cell turnover and protects the cell against

long term damage. Vitamin C is another natural lightener and brightener.

LICORICE Licorice, from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, has more to offer than its unique anise and bitter flavor. Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, its components prevent UVB induced pigmentation and hinder the production of melanin (as it inhibits tyrosinase— the enzyme that controls melanin production—activity). Promising studies have shown a great skin brightening response to the topical use of licorice extract.

LEMON High in vitamin C, lemons are packed with antioxidants that fight off free radicals, contain natural alpha hydroxy acids and have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Their acids work as exfoliators by gently removing the top layer of the epidermis (the stratum corneum made up of dead skin cells),

thus resulting in a brighter skin. The flavonoid nobiletin, which is abundant in citrus peels, has been found to be a potentially potent tyrosinase hinderer (some studies argue perhaps more effective than kojic acid—a known skin whitening agent).

RESVERATROL Resveratrol, found in red wine (red grape skin as well as knotweed plants), has anti-inflammatory properties, is also loaded with antioxidants, and some studies have shown that it can slow down melanin production and UVB induced cell color saturation. Some recent animal studies have demonstrated that topical application of resveratrol reduce tyrosinase and decrease hyperpigmentation.

GREEN TEA Much more than a soothing beverage, green tea offers many benefits for the skin and the fight against aging as it counts scores of beneficial properties

such as anti-inflammatory, and is loaded with antioxidants. Studies have shown an improvement in sun damage, with the regular use of green tea polyphenols (antioxidants), which reduce the activity of tyrosinase, thus conducing to brighter skin.

ARBUTIN Arbutin, mostly extracted from bearberry, can be perceived by some as a controversial component because it is essentially a glucose attached to a hydroquinone—the chemical that has come to be associated with skin “bleaching,” cancer and other skin disfigurations (such as cutaneous ochronosis, or the bluish discoloration of skin). Although some hail arbutin as the natural hydroquinone, others argue that its binding to hydroquinone is enough to frown upon. Hydroquinone has been used for decades as a successful skin whitening agent. Animal studies in which hydroquinone was linked to cancer contributed to the ban of the chemical in cosmetic skin lightening in the European Union, Australia and several other countries in Africa and Asia. While in the United States the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates cosmetics, proposed to remove hydroquinone from its generally recognized as safe and effective (GRASE) designation in 2006 (in order to further study the chemical), the FDA has yet to submit its findings and final ruling. Therefore the drug is still available—with varying strength over the counter and through prescription. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association stands by “the safe use of hydro- quinone products” and supports the “continued studies to assess carcinogenic risks and signs of exogenous ochronosis.” With that said, arbutin has been found to be a strong melanin production inhibitor, thus to lighten skin effectively.

All skin care professionals should be educated and aware of the care and usage of the ingredients that they are working with, natural or chemical, and should be regulated by the state in which they perform their services. If these ingredients might be power allies in your clients’ fight against hyperpigmentation, routine exfoliation is key. Exfoliating peels are vital in the war against aging, pigmentation and sun damage to speed up the working of the skin and reverse the skin conditions. Natural skin brighteners—which work great in series with monthly maintenance treatments— will make skin more sensitive to UV. As such, advise at least a seven day period after a peel before any sun exposure and utilize

proper sunscreen protection, even in indirect sun, all year round. While manual periodical exfoliation and chemical peels are crucial, the following are other skin lightening options your clients can benefit from: • microdermabrasion • dermaplaning • laser skin resurfacing • light emitting diodes (LED) • Intense Pulse Light (IPL) Reversing sun damage is indeed possible. Once the pigmentation is corrected by removing old pigmented skin, melanin inhibitors and sun protection along with antioxidants will ensure the skin stays in a healthy state.

Inflammation

SOS

Treating inflammatory skin conditions

by Aurora Solis Being able to recognize skin condition such as acne, rosoacea, psoriasis and dermatitis is an essential skill for estheticians. However, in order to help treat and soothe these conditions, a skilled esthetician must also understand the root cause of these conditions. For example, acne and Psoriasis are inflammatory conditions. Topical products can provide temporary relief, but educating clients regarding a non-inflammatory diet will create lasting and profound effects. Advise clients to avoid nightshades such as tomatoes, potatoes and eggplant, as these will cause inflammation. Undeniably, genetics play an important part in overall skin conditions; symptoms can either be triggered or alleviated by altering one's lifestyle.

Acne Acne is a disorder that affects approximately 85 percent of Americans between the ages of 12 and 24. It is recognized by the American Academy of Dermatology as the most commonly treated skin problem. Although millions of teenagers suffer from acne, adult clients with acne are on the rise. This fact may be attributed to the stress of our modern lifestyles and diets full of highly processed foods lacking in necessary nutrients. Acne can be classified into four grades (I, II, III, and IV), depending on the number and severity of lesions. Grade one is considered the least severe, and is often called acne simplex. The scale runs through grade four, the most severe case, which developes deeper cystic and nodular lesions. Not only does the condition affect the client's outward appearance, but also can have a devastating effect on self18

confidence. Grade four clients should be referred to a dermatologist. Types causes of acne include but are not limited to: hormonal, inflammatory, cystic, and bacterial. Contributing factors include: • genetics • oily skin • allergies • comedogenic cosmetics • candida • exposure to pollutants • medication It is not uncommon for dermatologists to prescribe oral medication to treat acne. Although these drugs may treat the problem, there are many negative side effects. Antibiotics deplete the body of both beneficial and harmful bacteria. Clients need to be reminded to replenish essential bacteria with pro-

biotics to maintain healthy intestinal flora when using antibiotics. Tetracyclinetype drugs cause the skin to become photosensitive, which can promote hyperpigmentation. Instead, try colloidal silver, a natural antibiotic (found in many health food stores). Colloidal silver can either be taken internally or applied topically to the affected area. It is essential for clients with acne to increase their cellular turnover. Frequently, the cells of the stratum corneum (the outer most layer of the skin) do not shed fast enough, creating a buildup of surface cells, which trap oil and bacteria. Look for products containing alpha hydroxy acids, azelaic acid and retinol, as these components give the desquamation process a boost.

The Sugar Problem There is a direct link between inflammation and sugar. There is a direct correla-

tion between proper nutrition and blemish-free skin. A study found an increase in acne occurrence in Japanese patients who switched to an American-style diet. Recommend a diet of raw fruits and vegetables, decreasing intake of processed food, with plenty of water to your clients.

Hot, Cold, and Acne In the summer months, it is crucial to keep skin clean of excess oils and sweat. Avoid over-cleansing the skin with harsh chemicals during this time. Stripping the skin's natural acid mantle will trigger more sebum production, thus triggering an outbreak. The same goes for the dryness experienced in the winter months. It is tempting for clients to forego using a moisturizer during winter. Even acneic skin needs moisturizer; just make sure it is non-comedogenic. Suggest to clients they increase their essential fatty acid intake by supplementing their diets with oils such as evening primrose or flaxseed. This will help break up fatty deposits that block pores and restore healthy tissue.

Psoriasis The root cause of psoriasis is unknown. Approximately seven million Americans are affected by this condition. This chronic, often debilitating disease generally appears between the ages of 15-25, but can arise at any age. There is a genetic component. If one parent has the condition, there is a 10 percent chance his/her offspring will have the condition. The odds jump up to 50 percent if both parents have psoriasis. Flare-ups of dry, irritated and cracked skin can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months, and they are itchy and painful. Smoking increases the probability and severity of flareups.

The Role of Skin Cells in Psoriasis While normal skin sheds and renews about every 28 days, the skin cells in psoriasis sufferers mature and pass from the bottom layer of the skin to the epidermis in approximately eight days, causing an accumulation of scaly patches. In other words, the keratinocytes grow too fast and the corneocytes do not shed fast enough. This results in large, silvery-white or pinkish scaly patches forming on the skin of the arms, legs, knees, elbows, scalp, ears, palms and soles of the feet. Psoriasis can be considered an inflammatory condition due to dilated capillaries. Aloe, virgin coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar applied topically can soothe psoriasis. Flaxseed oil and primrose oil supplements can help prevent dryness. Remember that as estheticians, we are not qualified to diagnose these conditions. It is important that we are able to recognize certain skin disorders and diseases to provide guidance and referrals to physicians when necessary. Use natural, non-toxic products as much as possible when designing treatment protocols. Steroids, antibiotics, and artificial chemicals contribute to wastewater contaminants. The more natural and healthy products used, the better for the individual and the enironment.

Spa Lé La Studio City, California

Wellness for Mama and Baby

SPA OF THE MONTH

by Cristina Beecham

Sometimes, we all need a break. But for expecting mothers or parents of young children, catching that much needed “me time” can sometimes seem impossible. Fifteen minutes of quiet would be a miracle, and a whole spa day just seems out of the question. But at Spa Lé La in Studio City, California, spa owner Trina Renea has created a safe space for parents to enjoy spa treatments while offering top notch child care, all in the same chic building!

spa Spa Of The Month

Spa Lé La is a full service day care that offers pre and postnatal services along with professional childcare in a soundproof Playroom, giving parents no excuse to take those 30 minutes of self-care time needed to be a productive and healthy parent. With signature prenatal facial and luxurious bath time treatments, mothers and parents-to-be can finally catch a break!

Signature Treatment Spa Lé La offers a variety of pre and postnatal skin care, massage, body care and wellness services. Their Prenatal Facial (50 minutes, $155) helps balance skin breakouts caused by unbalanced hormones during pregnancy. This treatment helps expecting mothers soothe both acne and hyperpigmentation and is safe for pregnant women. The Prenatal Facial comes in three varieties: Oxygen Facial, Exfoliating Facial and Deep Cleansing Facial. The Oxygen Facial consists of “a 26

painless, non-invasive application of a blend of skin plumping hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, vitamins and botanical extract” that is delivered to the skin via “a pressurized stream of pure oxygen.” This treatment is targeted towards expectant mothers with dull or dehydrated skin. The Exfoliating Facial offers a pumpkin peel that is perfect for this time of year. The pumpkin naturally exfoliates and feeds the skin vital nutrition and hydration, allowing serums to penetrate deeper into the skin. Finally, The Deep Cleansing Facial is perfect for pregnant women who are experiencing hormonal breakouts. This treatment includes “exfoliation, extraction of blemishes and upper body massage” and is completed with “a healing mask and moisturizer.”

Unique Childcare Offerings Spa Lé La’s claim to fame comes from its childcare services offered to guests

during their services. As an esthetician, spa owner and mother herself, the spa’s owner Trina Renea conceived this idea while trying to balance all these delicate parts of her life. She imagined a space where mother can escape from the hectic schedule of school pick-ups and temper tantrums without causing even more of a headache to find a baby sitter. The spa is complete with a sound proof Spa Lé La Playroom that was modeled after a recording studio, says Trina. This allowed her to soundproof the children without having to undergo extreme measures to soundproof the entire spa. All Spa Lé La nannies are certified and CPR trained. With their own class and activity schedule, children are encourage to play and learn in a fun, interactive and safe environment. Spa guests simply notify the staff upon scheduling their appointment that they will be bringing a child. As an extra special touch, Spa Lé La provides parents with a buzzer to

Wellness for Mama Apart from the expected facial and massage services, Spa Lé La also offers a variety of relaxing escapes that range from luxurious bubble bath to a simple quiet room away from the children. For example, the Nap Room (25 minutes, $35) offers mothers a midday getaway with complimentary childcare. This service invites guests to enjoy a warm bed with soothing spa sounds and luxurious linens to help melt their stress away. While mama is enjoying quiet time, children are cared for in a safe, quiet and toy-filled Playroom, offering a complete break from “parent mode.”

Spa Lé La’s impressive retail area offers a range of skin care and body care, as well as children’s toys and games to help keep mini spa goers happy and entertained while mom treats herself to a facial and massage. The spa also offers its own line of targeted skin care for expecting mothers. Owner, Trina Renea, designed the Mama Lé product line to be safe for pregnant mama’s. She also created Baby La product line, which is both gentle and safe for newborn babies. Mama Lé Products were specifically created for pregnant and breastfeeding moms. When we are pregnant we want to use things that are safe for our baby. Mama Lé products are just that. These products are made with the safest ingredients, feel luxurious, and have proven results. These products were created to be safe for a baby and also safe for a mom. For the super sensitive skin or a different feel, adults may enjoy these Baby La products as well.

YOUR POST-SUMMER MARKETING PLAN Step 1 With post summer promotions in mind, think of the big Ws—who, what, where, when and how! Who are your clients? Do you cater to hip and trendy businessmen and women, always on the lookout for the latest treatments? Or do you cater to traditional types who like things done the old fashioned way? What services do they want to see on your menu? Brainstorming with your staff—those who get to develop more intimate relationships with your loyal clientele as they get to treat them one on one—and asking your guests directly (perhaps through a quick and easy survey) can guide you in the right direction. How should you price your services? Although copying prices from the competition might seem like a simple way to go, it is more likely to be the wrong way to go. A better approach is to look at the profit you wish to make on a specific treatment, take into account the operating expenses, compensation and product cost. A treatment priced at $100 with 40 percent operating expenses, 35 percent compensation and 15 percent product cost, will yield a 10 percent profit (or $10). Looking to reach out to a new target market? Now would be a great time to do so, as people come back relaxed from their summer vacations, ready to try new things and places. Take a good look at your business location and the demographic; perhaps you are close to a college, medical center or military base—this can give you a clue as to whom could be your next devoted clientele. A short and sweet YouTube video is an easy way to generate some attention to your business, as is taking advantage of all the technology that is out there, from your website to social medias, emails and print advertising (more on this below). 32

October2019

LNEonline.com

Take into account the services that provide the biggest return on investment (ROI), and which ones you should capitalize on to make the biggest profit. Use past financial reports to analyze and highlight your most profitable postsummer sellers to help bring forth your best bet. Then set a time frame—not only when your promotions will start, but how long they will last, all while keeping in mind that a good cycle typically lasts between four and eight weeks. When you have all these questions taken care of, input the answers and timeline into a marketing plan template. There are plenty available online that usually include sections such as budget, calendar and objectives. It needs not be a formal document, but

it should cover everything involved in promoting your business and be easily understood by all key employees.

Step 2 Partner with your product or equipment suppliers to get suggestions on specific treatments, obtain promotional material, in-store demos, and help you train your staff on the new protocols. Then pack your retail area with postsun at home care. Do not forget to package! Pick a few treatments, bundle them up, give it a creative name and you have just made an addition to your menu that costs you nothing and is sure to spruce up your business.

Step 3 With all the above taken care of, you are ready to spread the message. Here are some tips on how to reach out to your loyal clientele and attract newcomers.

or transitioning skin care routines from summer to fall.

IN-SPA SIGNAGE EMAIL BLAST It is important to include an eye-catching and relevant subject line that applies to the client. Maybe create an email blast with a title such as ‘Fall Cleanup’ or ‘Get Your Skin Ready for the Holidays,’ suggesting, depending on the client’s budget, a series of chemical peels, facials or IPL [intense pulse light] treatments.

NEWSLETTERS Another good tip is to include educational information for your clients within your print or email newsletters. Spas often write articles in their newsletters to help clients learn about sun-block, 34

October2019

LNEonline.com

Opt for a chalkboard easel so that you can change it often, and place it in a high-traffic area, such as near the storefront entrance to attract the most attention from people walking by.

PRESS RELEASE A press release should not only include all of the relevant facts and dates, but also points of interest, quotes and images consistent with your fall promotion. A good press release anticipates questions people may have about the subject, and answers them in an interesting way,

DIRECT MAIL If you are sending out a direct-mail postcard or flyer, consider what kind of sun damage reversal messaging and imagery will make the greatest impact on your clients. Show before and after pictures of different brown spots and the skin after the removal on men and women. Educate men to the benefits of this machine, because men, too, want to look their best.

YOUTUBE YouTube can be a wonder tool. Armed with just your phone, shoot exciting 90 second videos of your business, showcasing equipment efficacy, treatment results, the unique talents of your team and even inspirational endorsements from your loyal clients. Short and to the point is key with YouTube viewers. With about one billion people watch-

ing as many as six billion hr of videos monthly (according to YouTube), it is truly a powerful, and best of all free, marketing opportunity.

CROSS MARKETING Take your plan to neighboring restaurants, fitness/yoga centers, bridal shops, women’s clubs and any other businesses you might want to crossmarket with, in order to design successful cross-promotions accordingly.

SOCIAL MEDIA Using your social media platforms is a great way to communicate with clients on an everyday basis and keep your services on top of everyone’s mind. It is important to use social media not just for announcing new treatments, but also for sharing new and exciting information about them to keep clients interested over time. Think of adding Twitter’s Promoted Tweets to your cam-

paign to get the word out on your post summer treatments. It is not too costly and can go a long way if used properly. The secret of Promoted Tweets is to make sure you reach just the right audience (targeted by interest, gender or geography) for what you offer. Remember, repetition is key when you advance your fall sun-damagereversal offerings. You should be constantly telling people of your products and promoting your services. Also, feature a pre-purchase package at a discount for services that cannot be done during the summer months due to photosensitivity.

“The classes are all fabulous! I like to get with a couple of friends and divide and conquer. We each take a different class and trade notes and discuss after!” “Make sure the show you attend exhibits companies that align with your spa’s values. My favorite part about ICES shows is they never allow multi-level marketing companies or brands that are aggressive and pushy on the exhibit floor. Overall, it’s the most professional show by far!” “Plan the booths you want to see and visit those first! Prepare for class times and set alarms on your phone. Be sure to dress appropriately. If you’re ever looking for a job, you never know when you’ll meet your future employer. I have even hired someone from a tradeshow! Have your business card ready. Not only is this about education, but it’s also a powerful way to network with others in our industry!” “Bring a small wheeled bag or be prepared to carry and check heavy bags. Highlight or circle the classes you want to take, checking to see if they repeat the next day so you can maximize your time in another class that doesn’t repeat. Bring an envelope for your receipts so they don’t get lost at the bottom of your bag and take a full size notepad and pen!” “Going to tradeshows reminds me of the amazing possibilities of esthetics. I go with a plan for education, booths, and products. Planning is the key to a good experience. Trade shows are important!”

Boost Holiday Sales Five Steps for Increased Holiday Revenue by Aurora Solis The holiday season is just around the corner! Most spa owners look forward to selling many gift cards, and it is no wonder — according to a recent study, more than $100 billion is spent on gift cards annually and 93 percent of U.S. consumers purchase or receive a gift card. While you should definitely take advantage of this opportunity during the holidays, don’t limit yourself to gift cards this season —maximize your gift giving options to generate more revenue with a strategy to combine and offer retail gifts with the purchase of gift cards. Here are five essential steps you can take to implement this strategy into your spa and Ho, Ho, Ho all the way to the bank!

Holiday Guide

• Bonus giveaways. Choose items such as body brushes, loofahs and essential oil. These small offerings should equal 10 percent of the total price point. In reality this gift with purchase is only costing you five percent, but you are showing a value of 10 percent. Select three or four different promotions for each price point using the same formula. Packaging:

1 Determining your

price point is crucial to maximizing your sales this season. The best way to determine your prices is to run price point reports from the previous year. Identify the most popular price points your clientele paid last year on average. Select a high, medium and low price point promotion to accommodate a wide range of clients and their various budgets. Set new goals to maximize your price elasticity, include a growth percentage you would like to increase, and use those dollar ranges to create three or four different holiday promotions for clients to choose from.

2 Select Your Promotions and Packaging Your promotions should include both retail and a gift card. Now that you have your price points, divide the amount of each level by 70/30. Seventy percent should be the gift card amount and 30 percent can be a retail product. Remember that you want to combine gift cards and retail products within

44

October2019

LNEonline.com

your promotion. This strategy helps you offer unique promotions beyond your typical gift card. You are offering appealing options that help your clients give someone they love a gift with both the card and the retail products, and increasing your overall sales of both. Price Point Structure Example

Promotion name: Time to Rejuvenate Price $250 Your clients receive: • $175 gift card (representing the 70 percent portion of the promotion) • $75 body scrub and moisturizer (representing 30 percent of the promotion) • Bonus: This is the added value clients receive for purchasing this package, in the form of a bonus gift for purchasing this high-end holiday package. • A “Gift with Purchase” valued of $25 (representing a 10 percent value)

To ensure mega sales, your presentation of the packages must be attractive and easy to gift. Choose attractive packaging. Pre-wrap promotions and make it easy for your clients to grab and go. By offering these promotions you are changing gift card giving. Your clients are able to buy gift cards, retail gifts AND receive a bonus. This package makes you competitive with department stores, and offers innovative promotions that are easy to buy for the gift giver and exciting for the recipient.

3 Merchandise Your Promotions Holiday promotions should be offered for a minimum of 45 days. Stimulate sales by merchandising them in a very festive way. Display your promotions and products in a high traffic area, and use frames to describe each one of the promotions with a focus on the gift, the gift card and the bonus or the gift with purchase. Also, include in your displays a visual of how the promotions look when giftwrapped. And finally, generate excitement and make gift giving fun by decorating your spa for the holidays.

4 Marketing Strategies To ensure mega sales, you need a marketing plan to sell your spa’s holiday promotions. Here are several effective strategies:

Holiday Guide • Update your website. Place your promotions on your home page slider with a “Learn more” button to take them to a landing page where they can view all your promotions and purchase them online. • Create an email blast to be sent several times to your database. • Create a video featuring all of your promotions and use the video throughout your social media platforms and on your site. • Host a fun, interactive holiday event where you present and offer all of your promotions for the season. • Design and print postcards or flyers to hand out to all guests. • Distribute flyers to businesses in close proximity to you who have a large number of employees. This can increase your sales exponentially.

• Use posters and/or electronic frames throughout the spa to advertise your promotions. • Have team members wear buttons with a message like, “Get a FREE gift! Ask me how!” • Include details of all your promotions in your newsletter. • Place printed posters advertising the promotions throughout the spa.

5 Train and reward your team A successful season requires effort from everyone on the team. Therefore, the leader must set targets and goals for every team member. In addition to setting goals for service, retail and gift card package sales, invest time to train everyone on how to present the promotions. Provide them with a script and get them excited about the opportunities

they have to earn additional income this holiday season. To generate excitement, have the team wear something festive, such as Santa hats, elf costumes or anything else that reminds everyone that your spa has gifts and it’s the season for giving. Make sure to have fun! After all, it’s the season to be jolly. Finally, don’t forget about how important the team is. While many spas host an event to recognize clients, it’s a great idea to host a team appreciation party also. Do something special to let them know how much you value their contribution and commitment to success. So what are you waiting for? Don’t procrastinate — go ahead and get started! Be productive by scheduling time into your calendar to work on these tips, and you and your team will enjoy a great holiday season!

Holiday Decor Deck the spa halls this holiday season by Aurora Solis

‘Tis the season to deck the halls with boughs of holly! Getting into the holiday spirit with the sights, sounds and scents of the season will not only spread yuletide cheer to your clients, but will entice them to stay in the spa longer and, yes, spend a little more money as well. It’s important for the spa to reflect the holiday spirit because it really makes us feel more connected to our clients. It’s important to make long lasting relationships with our clients, and getting into the holiday spirit and sharing that is a great way to build that relationship.

Holiday Guide

Deck The (Spa) Halls Coming up with a theme for your décor will help you complete your decorating to-do list more effortlessly. You can go old school with red and green ornaments, miniature Santas and candy canes. Or, opt for a winter wonderland theme with icicles and snowy displays, or a woodsy, natural vibe. Go with a winter theme. Use pine cones, small pine trees, poinsettia flowers, cinnamon sticks, snow flakes and snow men and women. On the outside of the spa, you can place white icicle lights, fresh pine wreaths and poinsettias. The scent of fresh pine is amazing and reminds clients of being surrounded by big trees. It’s very grounding for the holidays. To create the look of snow, use white draped curtains hung from the ceiling. Place white string lights under the curtains and all around the inside of your treatment rooms to give it an illuminating, warm glow. Keep it beautiful and classy. 50

October2019

LNEonline.com

Another option is to go all natural. Put out a 10- foot pine tree, fresh garland, a giant fragrant wreath and beautiful twinkle lights. You can use owls as your theme since they are time- less. Keep the displays tasteful, elegant and clean — very boutique like. Or, you can take the classic approach to your décor with ornaments hung from the ceiling, traditional Christmas colors and classic tinsel. One theme to avoid is anything religious. It’s good to keep it religionneutral to respect everyone’s beliefs, or non-beliefs. Providing an inclusive, neutral retail space is far more beneficial than exclusivity.

Flavors of the Season Matching the seasonal scents that will be wafting through your spa to your theme is a great way to fully drive home the feel you are going for. A woodsy theme and pine scents go hand in hand. If you decorate a lot with candy canes, use peppermint scents. If you want to create the feeling of going to Grandma’s for Christmas, try gingerbread-scented candles. For the natural theme, woodsy aromas are their scent of choice. You want your guests to have a sensory experience when shopping the retail area. Use candles ranging in spices like cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon, and

Holiday Guide

scents such as sandalwood, black plum, persimmon, cedar, fern, smoked birch and juniper clove. It really enhances the holiday ambiance. An alternative to lighting candles is using a diffuser with essential oils. Create a custom blend of essential oils like peppermint and lavender, cinnamon and orange or pine or other scents of the holidays. Mix an uplifting scent with a comforting or relaxing scent with the intention of bringing a joyful feeling to your clients as soon as they walk into the spa. Use the purest essential oils in a mister or a diffuser.

You can simply replace the green tea with mulled apple cider and serve gingerbread cookies instead of chocolate chip. If you host special holiday spa events or parties, offer your clients traditional eggnog as a special beverage treat. You can also offer it on the weekends to all spa-goers throughout the holiday season. Other seasonal goodies include candy canes and peppermint tea. Match your holiday beverages to your seasonal treatments. For example, serve cranberry tea to tie into your various cranberry treatments of the season.

Seasonal Refreshments To add to the sensory experience, give your clients a taste of the holidays as well by adding a few seasonal refreshments to your lounge and waiting room.

Sounds of the Season Christmas music can be polarizing — people either love it or hate it. For spas, it’s important to stick to calm-

ing, serene, spa-like music regardless of the season. Your holiday music playlist should be soothing Christmas symphonies. It’s traditional with no vocals. Start playing it the weekend after Thanksgiving. If you don’t have great skills as a DJ, there are plenty of music services that have wonderful playlists, such as Pandora, iHeart Radio and Spotify. Take a different route by mixing up traditional and modern holiday sounds, such as Native American flute, soothing piano, instrumental Christmas classics in the treatment rooms and a Sarah McLachlan holiday CD or soft jazz in the retail area. Adding a merry atmosphere to your spa is not only enjoyable, but a good marketing tool. It’s fun to get everyone in the holiday mood, and guests buy more when the spa is ‘holiday’d up!’

Meadowfoam Why this plant oil should be on your radar by Cristina Beecham

If you have read the ingredient profile of any botanical skin care product in recent years, you are sure to have stumbled upon meadowfoam oil at least a few times, especially in botanicallybased skin care lines. Meadowfoam oil is growing in popularity, and there are many benefits to be studied in this U.S. native plant oil. Let’s uncover why meadowfoam oil is an increasingly popular ingredient in professional skin care.

organic & wellness Meadowfoam Oil

Meadowfoam oil is most similar to Jojoba oil. Meadowfoam (Limnanthes alba) is a winter plant that is native to Northern California and Southern Oregon. Limnanthes means “marshflower” and its common name of Meadowfoam is derived from its likeness to white foam moving over the ocean. When in bloom, meadowfoam showcases white flowers. This plant has adapted to hot, dry summers and cool winters, which allows it to flourish in these dry valley climates. It can also be found in parts of Canada. Meadowfoam serves as nutrient food for many small animals such as birds and mice, and is an important biodegradable alternative to vegetable oil.

Meadowfoam Oil

61 percent eicosenoic acid 18 percent docosadienoic acid 16 percent acid Meadowfoam oil also contains:

The oil produced by the meadowfoam plant is odorless with a light golden color. It is extracted from the plant and has been used industrially since the 1980s and in cosmetics since the 1990s. The seeds of the meadowfoam plant have about a 25 percent concentration of oil. High quality oils are extracted via the cold-pressing process, as to not disrupt the nutrient profile of the oil. Meadowfoam oil is a highly stable oil that does not oxidize easily. This gives meadowfoam oil a uniquely long shelf-life, lasting up to three years.

Nutrient Profile Meadowfoam oil is most similar to jojoba oil based on its fatty acid profile. The fatty acid breakdown of meadowfoam oil is: 62

Vitamin C – protects against free radi-

cals and increases collagen production Vitamin E – antioxidant, products outer skin layers Linoleic Acid – promotes cell turnover Oleic Acid – protects skin barrier Clients with burns, blisters, eczema, or psoriasis will benefit from meadowfoam oil due to its high content of antioxidants Vitamin E and C. As mentioned, meadowfoam oil is similar to jojoba oil in that its chemical makeup is similar to that of human sebum, making it a great moisturizing ingredient. Specifically, it contains a large amount of omega 9 fatty acid. This helps to balance the skin’s oil production and can be a great choice for clients struggling with oily skin and

who are looking for a moisturizing oil to help inhibit over-production of oil. Meadowfoam oil is also efficient at reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) and is a beneficial ingredient for those with damaged skin barriers, whether it is from over-exfoliating or adverse reactions to other products. This oil also has anti-inflammatory benefits that help acne-prone skin since it has a low comedogenic rating and aids in soothing redness. When added to face cleansers, it reduces blackheads and unclogs pores. When paired with other ingredients, meadowfoam oil increases the absorption properties of other active ingredients.

UV Protection A study from Oregon State University found that meadowfoam oil provides some UV protection. It contains compounds known as glucosinolates prevented sun-induced aging by blocking enzymes responsible for collagen degradation.

organic & wellness Meadowfoam Oil The same study also found that the glucosinolates had anticancer properties because they prevent the cross-linking of DNA. This helps prevent cancercausing mutations and reduce precancerous cells.

Usage in Cosmetics Meadowfoam oil can be used in small doses due to its potency. A few drops can be applied directly to the face or it can be used as a massage oil. Two to three drops will suffice if combining with other products such as serum, moisturizer or skin creams. Because of its long shelf life, meadowfoam oil increases the stability of essential oils by working as a carrier oil and prolonging the fragrance. Infants with skin irritations and those that are experiencing discomfort with teething can benefit from this oil as well. Meadowfoam oil is currently used in skin care products such as stretch

mark creams to provide moisture, improve skin texture, and complexion. Cosmetics such as lip plumpers and mascara also contain meadowfoam seed oil for its moisture-retaining and conditioning properties. The moisturizing and restorative properties can be seen in hair care as well. Meadowfoam oil hydrates and rebuilds damaged hair creating a smoother, shinier hair shaft. In addition, it protects against further damage caused by extreme weather conditions, the sun, and other elements.

Contraindications According to the Environmental Working Group, Meadowfoam seed oil has no known side effects and is edible. It is advised that those with nut allergies avoid products containing the oil. It is best to consult a physician before introducing it into your skin and hair care routine.

EYEBROW EMERGENCY! How to resuscitate a brow or lash emergency with Umbreen Sheikh

As women, we are pretty familiar with how to handle skincare 911’s, blunders with our hair, shaving mishaps, and how to correct makeup mistakes. When it comes to brows, this particular part of our face is a bit more mysterious. Many of us grew up simply waxing, tweezing or leaving them au naturel until brows became the hottest “accessory” on our face with a multitude of options of ways to groom and improve upon them. What happens when you face a brow emergency?

LNEonline.com

October2019

image Eyebrow Emergency!

There is no better expert to turn to for advice than Umbreen Sheikh, a licensed cosmetologist, and founder + CEO of Wink Brow Bar and Salon in New York City.

PROBLEM: Overplucking your brows Almost every woman has gotten too close to that magnifying mirror and been overzealous with a tweezer. Umbreen says, “Don’t fear. You can fake it till you make it with subtle makeup tricks that will help to create the illusion of a fuller, thicker brow. This can be done with Wink’s own Brow Perfecting Quad.” Brush the two powders through, then brush through again to blend for a natural-looking finish. Finally, use a highlighter to camouflage any random hairs. Umbreen says that “Drawing a straight line under your brow will help minimize the appearance of strays. This will also lighten and brighten the entire eye area, drawing more attention to the eyes.”

PROBLEM: Creating a too wide eyebrow gap The obvious solution to this is to fill in the points closest to the bridge of the nose to lessen the gap. This can be done via microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent tattoo technique used to create the illusion of fuller brows. With this method,Umbreen can create almost any look and shape. First, Wink technicians consult with clients about the best brow shape for their face and choose a color that matches the natural hair color and skin undertone. The brow area is then cleaned and numbed for the treatment. Instead of using a tattoo machine, a handheld tool manually draws hair strokes. This all can take up to 30 to 40 minutes. Results can last anywhere from one to three years, depending 68

on your skin type (the ink fades faster on oily skin), products, and lifestyle. It’s also an ideal procedure for women who have lost brow volume due to age, menopause or chemotherapy.

PROBLEM: Unruly Brows Bold, feathery brows are in, but messy is an adjective you never want to be associated with your arches. “If your brow hairs are “wonky,” you need a game plan for controlling them,” says Umbreen. If your arches do need a trim, Umbreen suggests brushing your brows up towards the top of your ear with a spooly brush and cutting only the tips off the long hairs pointing the scissors down, (not parallel to the brow). "This gives trimmed brows a natural look, because none of the hairs are exactly the same length," As a finish-

ing touch, mist a spoolie with hairspray and brush it through brows—directing the hairs up for a lifted look.

PROBLEM: Matching your brow color to your hair exactly In the case of the hair on your head and your eyebrows, you “don’t want to match the curtains to the carpet,” says Umbreen. Very often, a hair colorist will suggest that you tint your brows much lighter if you are going blonder. Umbreen disagrees with this. “Darker brows will act as a frame for the face and enhance your eye color. Generally, it will give you the appearance of a lot more brow.” If you have gone too light or too dark, “eyebrow tinting is the process of applying semi-permanent dye to enhance, shape, and define your brows.

This can be done at salons such as Wink. “It gives the appearance of thicker, more youthful-looking brows,” saysUmbreen. An average session takes only about 15 minutes and the color should last anywhere from 3-6 weeks. It’s instant gratification as your new eyebrow color will be immediately apparent.

MISTAKE: Plucking brows too short Eyebrows that are too short can make your eyes and nose look too big. If you have plucked them or waxed them so that you look like you have half an eyebrow, of course, you can spend the time to pencil them in every day but that if time-consuming and takes skill to make both brows symmetrical. Or… you could get eyebrow extensions. Similar to eyelash extensions, eyebrow extensions are done with tiny fibers of mink or synthetic hairs. The brow extension fibers are then attached to either bare skin or to existing hairs, giving them a fuller, stronger look. The service is from 25 mins to 90 mins depending on thickness or amount of work required.

THE PROBLEM You’re so squeamish for waxing or you bruise easily You would be hard-pressed to find a woman who enjoys the tear of a strip of wax against her eyelid to remove tiny eyebrow hairs, but yet we put up with it in the name of beauty. For anyone who has ever deviated from their regular waxer on a vacation or business trip, you have most likely ended up being cut or bruised by overly aggressive waxing. There is a great alternative for everyone called organic threading. As Umbreen explains, “With its origins in Asia centuries ago, eyebrow threading is a simple process that is often considered to be one of the most painless (and least invasive) options for 70

shaping brows. The threading process is simple and typically involves a single piece of cotton thread, After wiping the eyebrow area clean with alcohol, the thread is "twisted and pulled along areas of unwanted hair acting like a minilasso, lifting the hair directly from the root without the use of any chemicals or unnecessary tugging on delicate skin. As opposed to waxing, tweezing, or lasers, threading is considered one of the safest and most precise methods of hair removal, especially in the delicate areas surrounding the eye. "Threading allows our specialists to have greater control over which hairs are removed.” The technique is also "100 percent natural," which means there are no artificial waxes, chemicals, or invasive techniques used during the procedure.

brow product should be applied within the brow’s hairline, not beyond it. Cotton swabs will remove any unwanted shading that has ventured too far outside the lines. Trying at home to make both eyebrows symmetrical This is one of the most common mishaps that Umbreen hears from clients who tried to ‘go it alone at home.’ Umbreen offers, “When you obsess over making your eyebrows look exactly the same, you can wind up over-plucking them. Too-thin brows are much worse than ones that are just a tad different. Your eyebrows are supposed to be sisters, not twins.
