Essential Facial Massage Techniques for a Refreshed Appearance

Facial massages are more than just a relaxing indulgence; they are an effective way to enhance skin health and address various skin concerns. By enhancing blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, facial massage promotes a more radiant complexion, reduces puffiness, and helps to flush out toxins from the skin. The technique also sculpts and contours the face by lifting and toning the skin, enhancing its definition and reducing sagging.

5 Effective Facial Massage Techniques

1

Effleurage: The Foundation of Facial Massage

Effleurage is a French term that means "to skim" and describes a gentle, stroking movement used to warm up the skin and muscles. This technique involves smooth, flowing strokes with the palms or fingers and is often the first step in a facial massage.

How to perform effleurage:

Use the pads of your fingers or the palms of your hands to make long, sweeping strokes across your face. Begin at the center of the forehead and move outward toward the temples. Continue with downward strokes from the cheeks to the jawline and upward strokes from the chin to the ears.

2

Knuckle Kneading to Lift and Tone

Knuckle kneading involves using the knuckles to lift and roll tissues within the skin, promoting blood circulation and reducing tension. This technique helps plump up the skin, depuff the eyes, and improve overall appearance.

How to perform knuckle kneading:

Cleanse the face and ensure your hands are clean. Use your knuckles to make circular, sweeping motions across the face. Start at the chin and move upwards, focusing on areas like the cheeks and jawline. This helps lift and firm the skin.

3

Facial Tapping to Energize and Revitalize

Facial tapping, or Emotional Freedom Technique, uses light, quick taps to stimulate blood flow and relieve stress.

How to perform facial tapping:

Using the tips of your fingers, gently tap all over the neck, chin, jawline, cheekbones, under the eyes, and forehead. This technique boosts circulation, tightens the skin, and promotes relaxation.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage to De-Puff & Detoxify

This technique focuses on stimulating lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness and improve skin tone.

How to perform lymphatic drainage:

Use your fingers to make gentle, upward strokes starting from the base of the neck and moving towards the jawline, cheeks, and forehead. Be sure to focus on areas with noticeable puffiness and fluid retention. This encourages lymphatic flow and helps reduce swelling.

Facial Acupressure for Stress Relief

Facial acupressure involves applying gentle pressure to specific points on the face to stimulate energy flow and balance. This technique can help to alleviate tension, improve circulation, and enhance overall skin health.

How to perform Facial Acupressure:

Temples: Located at the outer edges of the eyebrows, gently press and make small circles with your index and middle fingers for 2-3 minutes. This helps relieve headaches, reduce stress, and diminish puffiness around the eyes.

Between Your Eyebrows: Known as the Third Eye, this point is between the eyebrows. Use your thumb or index finger to apply gentle pressure and make small circles for 2-3 minutes to calm the mind and improve skin tone.

Chin: At the center of your chin, just below your lower lip, press gently with your index finger. Hold for a few seconds, then release. This can help relieve stress and improve emotional well-being.

Under the Nose: Located just below the nose at the top of the upper lip, apply gentle pressure and hold for several seconds. Repeat for 2-3 minutes to reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

Next to Your Ear: Positioned next to the ear at the top of the lower jaw, use your index and middle fingers to make small circles for 2-3 minutes. This can relieve jaw tension and support lymphatic drainage.

Regular face massage stimulates collagen production, which can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leading to a firmer, more youthful look. Not only that, the act of massaging the face can relieve muscle tension and stress, improving overall mental well-being. When incorporated into facials, massage can enhance the absorption of skincare products, making them more effective. The results are instantly visible, revealing a radiant glow and a refreshed, sculpted appearance that enhances the natural contours of the face. Your clients will not only melt away into your treatment bed longing for more, but leave with a more relaxed, balanced state of mind and glowing skin to reflect it.

Any esthetician can slap on products and call it a day. What sets an exceptional esthetician apart from their competitors is the intention behind every facial move, especially your massage.

Incorporating Tools for Lifting

Incorporating tools like Gua Sha, microcurrent devices, and jade rollers into your facial massage routine can amplify the benefits significantly. Gua Sha, with its smooth-edged stone, helps stimulate blood flow, support lymphatic drainage, and contour the face, enhancing the natural lifting effect. Microcurrent devices deliver low-level electrical currents to stimulate and tone facial muscles, which can reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve muscle firmness. Meanwhile, jade rollers, with their soothing, cooling properties, aid in reducing puffiness and promoting better blood circulation. Together, these tools not only boost the efficacy of your facial massage but also provide a more sculpted, rejuvenated appearance by enhancing circulation, reducing fluid retention, and promoting a youthful glow.

It’s important to experiment with different methods to find what works best for you and

your clients. By embracing these facial massage techniques and utilizing these powerful tools, you not only enhance your client’s skin but also adopt a holistic approach to well-being.

Magic

An

Interview with Audrey

How did you get started in the esthetics industry?

I learned how to wax my legs in high school and started experimenting with all different kinds of wax out of fascination. I would spend my whole allowance on different waxes from Navarro. Fast forward after college, I went to beauty school for esthetics “just for fun” because I had graduated early and had some time to spare. I then ended up working in a hair

salon and spent my first paycheck on laser hair removal for my legs. From there, I decided I needed to become a laser tech. That was in 2006 and it has all just snow-balled from there.

What are the challenges, and the rewards, of working in the spa space?

Everyone’s skin/body is different and so there isn’t just one answer for every skin type. It can be frus -

trating for both clients and practitioners alike when trying to help someone with a particular skin concern. Seeing the beautiful outcomes, however, always makes the effort worth it.

How are medspas elevating the field to the next level?

Medspas combine traditional spa services with medical-grade aesthetic treatments under the supervision of a doctor. In addition to

facials and lashes, we also offer advanced cosmetic treatments like lasers, deeper peels and injectables.

What treatments are in-demand for your clients?

Our most-requested treatment is laser hair removal because we’ve managed to establish a presence in that space. Due to our YouTube channel, @auds_beauty_adventures, we have clients who fly in for their scalp laser hair removal treatments. We also offer a few unique facial treatments that keep our loyal clients coming back regularly for them. Our ARNP is specialized in weightloss and has seen some great success with those treatments. Some of our other favorites are brow threading, peels and lash lifts!

Are there any industry trends you have noticed?

What’s fun about esthetics is that it is forever-changing! I’ve noticed a shift towards clients appreciating more pharmaceutical-grade products versus just anything they find in store. More potent, powerful ingredients are taking center stage now that clients are learning to research more about what they are buying. They appreciate receiving a more customized skincare routine. There is also a shift to a more natural-looking approach to injectables versus the overdone look that was popular a few years ago. Wellness-focused treatments like our wellness duo which incorporates gua sha and lymphatic drainage as well as massage on the face and scalp are on the rise. I think that clients are realizing the

value of feeling good and how that can affect your mental health and, as a result of that, your physical appearance.

What advice would you give an esty just starting out?

Learn as much as you can from as many people as possible! I think I was able to develop a successful business because I learned what I liked and didn’t like from past bosses and jobs. Learn the same thing from multiple people and take pieces of each and make it your own. Harness what you’re personally good at. Not everyone has a relaxing vibe and not everyone is going to get every last blackhead out of their clients’ skin. It’s about realizing what you’re good at and growing from there.

How important has marketing and branding been for your business?

Any tips?

Marketing and branding, I will admit, has been a struggle. I recently moved locations (same building, new suite) and decided to take the opportunity to rebrand a bit. I opened my business over 11 years ago now and it was time. I wanted a bolder logo and something that embodied our original 20’s vibe but drew in something a little more modern as well. The response to our style change was great. Clients loved it and I think it will benefit the business long-term. As far as marketing, that constantly changes as trends and social media change. I also recently began a strategy with a new person and it seems to be heading in the right direc -

tion. This industry has changed tremendously in the past 5 years with competitors popping up everywhere and staying relevant is so important. How do you choose which products/treatments/tools/tech to use?

I recently rebranded my products as well. I use private label companies for my skincare line. I’m obsessed with the quality of those products. I’ve changed a few times over the years because, like anything else in esthetics, things are always changing and getting better. As far as machines go, I’m a big believer in having the best laser for hair removal which, in my opinion, is the Candela GentleMax Pro. I also use a few machines for facials that I tried first as a demo and liked so I went ahead and purchased it. I’m careful with what I buy because it obviously has to make sense for the business. Machines are expensive and sometimes so are the con-

treatment and decide if all of that factored in makes sense. I’ve made mistakes and learned expensive lessons.

What is the most important lesson you've learned, as both an esthetician and a business owner? Don’t trust reps. It sounds terrible but they don’t have your best interest at heart. Do your research for yourself and have them put everything in writing when you do make a deal.

How do you envision the future of esthetics as the industry evolves? I have no idea and that’s both scary and fun to me. It’s hard to predict trends and sometimes there are trends that I just personally don’t like or believe in so I keep my head down and keep doing what I like and do best.

Medspas combine the soothing ambiance of traditional spa services with the precision of advanced, medical-grade aesthetic treatments, all performed under the expert oversight of a licensed physician.

Tried and true tips for flawless results

of a Great Lash Lift

With years of experience and expertise in the lash industry, seasoned lash artist Rebeca Esparza generously shares her most valuable and proven techniques for achieving beautifully lush, lifted lashes that last—guaranteeing flawless results, every single time!

Research, research, research! Whether it's word of mouth or reading reviews, make sure the esthetician performing your lash lift comes highly recommended, preferably from someone you personally know. Make sure they have crystal clear before and after photos and, if you have any concerns beforehand, always reach out!

Ask all the questions! Ask your lash artist these questions: What brand do they use for the lash lift? Are they certified by the brand? How long have they been performing lash lifts? In case of overprocessing the lashes (which shouldn't happen if they are well versed in lash lifts, but it CAN happen, especially when they are inexperienced) do they know how to undo overprocessed lashes that are crimped up? Is a lash tint included in the price?

Find an esthetician who focuses on just a few specialties. It is usually a red flag when someone you see for nails (for example) starts doing lash lifts. 9 times out of 10, the product is purchased via Amazon without any training or certification. This is where horrible lash lifts happen! Find a lash artist who lives and breathes lashes, all day, every day.

Show up to your appointment with little to no makeup, preferably. It saves time during the service and it is a much cleaner process.

Your esthetician should provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure the longevity and health of your lashes. These guidelines typically include avoiding saunas, steam rooms, and hot environments that may cause excess moisture or heat to compromise the bond of the lash adhesive. .

If you've been wearing lash extensions for an extended period, it's important to give your natural lashes the care they need to regain their strength and vitality. Be sure to consult with your lash artist about the best lash growth serums and conditioners available. These products can help stimulate healthy growth, strengthen the lashes, and promote length and fullness, allowing your natural lashes to become healthier, stronger, and even longer than ever before. Incorporating these treatments into your routine can make a noticeable difference in the appearance and resilience of your lashes!

A great lash lift artist will not perform a lash lift on you before your lashes are ready, approximately 6-8 weeks. In some cases, your lash lift may last 10-12 weeks! Lashes need to have grown out and shed about 70 percent before a lash lift can safely be performed again, with no damage to the lashes.

An Esty’s First Year Journey: October

This month, Sofia shares her thoughts on an issue all estys face at some point in their career: time management.

How do you manage a full schedule, between work and school?

A lot of coffee and tea go along with my time management! I use an elaborate planner with notifications, and many alarms set throughout the day so I don’t forget my tasks at hand. Setting aside certain hours for studying and certain hours for work has helped me learn to better manage my time. Currently, I am finishing my nursing school applications and volunteering, as well as an internship shadowing an OB/GYN and nurse practitioner in a private women’s health clinic.

Since those who work in esthetics and skincare tend to have ebbs and flows in workload, how do you utilize any downtime that arises?

Well, I’m still trying to finish my mobile beauty camper, and I am practicing

facials, lash lifts, and makeup on friends and family.

As a young esty just starting out, how do you plan to market/brand yourself to stay booked?

I think the best way is social media. Once my mobile beauty camper is up and running, I plan to reach out to other esthetician creators and people I went to esthetics school with in hopes of promoting each other’s content. Plus, I will use portfolio photos to hopefully grow a social media presence.

Do you prefer the flexibility of handling your own schedule, or do you think you might want the structure of working in-house in the future? At this point, I need to manage my own schedule because school takes the majority of my time. In the future,

A LOT OF COFFEE AND TEA GO ALONG WITH MY TIME MANAGEMENT!

trying to manage all the different aspects of my schedule at once might be too difficult, so I may prefer working in an established business.

What is your ideal vision of work/ life balance?

As of now, it is important that I have weekends off and time for a social life. Down the road when I have a family, ideally, I would work part-time, maybe three or four days a week.

Esthetician Spotlight

Rebeca Esparza, Lashes by Rebe

What is your business called and where are you located?

My business is called Lashes by Rebe and my private studio is located in Coral Gables, Florida.

Can you give a little information about your background as an esthetician?

After spending over 10 years writing and editing copy for ad agencies, I decided to go after my childhood dream of being an esthetician.

I was always inspired by my tia abuela (great aunt) who is now 87, and still performs facials for her loyal clientele. Growing up, I would watch her and think: this is the coolest job ever-pop pimples and wax brows out of the comfort of your home? Sign me UP!

In 2018, after years of being my friends' go-to for at-home facials, make-up application, and beauty advice, I decided to take the leap when I was 33. I happened to make the move to Las Vegas after my contract working on copy for Microsoft was up, and I enrolled myself in beauty school there.

I've always been obsessed with lash length and mascara but I never got into extensions. Something about the look was always off to me, and the thought of glueing lashes to each individual lash gave me anxiety. Through trial and error, I learned about lash lifts, first getting them done on myself with any esthetician that offered them. I realized they always came out differently, some looked wonky, some looked great, some lasted, some didn't. Some cost $50 some cost $200. I did my research and found a mentor who could teach me how to understand the chemistry behind lash lifts (they are basically a type of perm for the lashes) and that's how I came to develop my own technique.

A great lash lift all comes down to product and ingredient knowledge, technique, and a discerning eye for choosing the right mold shape for the lash lift. There are many factors like eye shape, lash length and texture, and the timing--it's not a one-size-fits all service, as any great esthetician will tell you about their craft.

Although I can give you an amazing facial, I decided to stick with just lash lifts and become known as "YOUR GIRLS FAVORITE LASH LIFT."

Whenever I book a service, I want to find the best of the best, absolute expert at that one service, not a jack of all trades. Being that it uses the same product, I decided to get into brow laminations but I do not consider myself a brow artist. I refer out for brow shaping to the person I think is the best of the best!

Over six years later, here I am, happily doing what I love out of the comfort of my home, just like 12-year-old me dreamed.

What inspired you to become an esthetician?

My great aunt. What beauty philosophy do you stand by?

Less is more! What is your favorite treatment?

Lash lifts!

What brands do you use and why?

YUMILashes is the gold standard of lash lifts. Hailing from France, they have extremely strict regulations for which ingredients and chemicals can be used on the face and eyes.

What is your secret to beautiful skin?

Quarterly facials and a pared down, but extensive routine at home. Never sleep with makeup on, and avoid makeup when you can.

What is your favorite part about working for your company?

Seeing my clients’ reactions when they go from thinking they have tiny, downward lashes to beautiful, lifted lashes! I love to rehab a lash extension addict!

Fire & Ice Facial

In search of a treatment to soothe her irritated skin and even out texture, our editor, Kimberly, headed to The Parlour Miami, a renowned medspa in the Pinecrest neighborhood offering a range of facial and body treatments, injectables, laser hair removal, brow and lash options, and nail services.

She tried the Fire & Ice Signature Facial, which included a deep pore cleansing, exfoliation, manual extractions, light massage and self-heating pumpkin enzyme mask. The "Fire & Ice" comes from the use of both steam and cryo globes. The treatment finishes off with a cocktail of skin correcting serums, moisturizer and SPF.

She not only noticed much smoother, calmer skin with improved texture, but learned a valuable lesson from esthetician Yuliya Petresvan. Her thorough skin analysis revealed that Kimberly now has a combination skin type, changing from the dry skin she has had for many years. Moral of the story?
