BROWS HYPER-REALISM
The next phase of permanent makeup
by Joan O’Donnell
The permanent makeup industry continues to grow and evolve, with a continuing influx of new pigments, needles, and techniques entering the market. The industry looks to move away from the previous negative connection of harsh, unnatural brows and provide men and women with the most naturallooking brows that utilize their current hair and face shape. The goal is to enhance clients’ features and provide them with the confidence that comes with beautifully applied, worry-free makeup.
The latest trend in permanent makeup is hyper-realism brows, sometimes referred to as ultra-realism brows. This technique is designed to replicate the natural texture, flow, and dimension of eyebrow hairs with exceptional detail, making the result appear extremely natural and lifelike.
This is achieved using smaller needle cartridges, such as a nano needle, and each individual hair is shaded, giving hair a three-dimensional appearance. With hyper-realism brows, the goal is to achieve a result that blends seamlessly with existing hair, with atten -
tion to detail in color, shape, and texture to ensure the final appearance is as natural and lifelike as possible. This provides a realistic, long-lasting enhancement to natural brows. It is a great option for all skin types and ages, whereas some other permanent makeup techniques can be more restrictive regarding mature skin types. To achieve hyper-realism brows, several advanced techniques and skills are employed:
1. Pixelated Techniques:
This technique uses tiny dots of pigment to add depth and dimension. Each stroke is pixelated. Attention is given to adding dimension to each individual stroke – darker and fuller in the center of the stroke and softer at the edges of each stroke. Pixelated shading is then added to further dimension where needed.
2. Precision in Design:
Hyper-realism brows require a detailed design process. This includes careful planning of the eyebrow shape, color matching to the client’s natural hair color, and attention to individual hair direction and growth patterns.
3. Advanced Tools and Techniques:
Using high-quality pigments and tools, along with techniques that allow for fine control, helps in achieving the level of detail necessary for hyper-realism.
4. Aftercare and Maintenance:
Proper aftercare is crucial to ensure the pigment settles correctly and maintains its realistic appearance. This involves following specific guidelines for cleaning, moisturizing, and protecting the brows during the healing process.
5.Customization:
Each set of hyper-realism brows is tailored to the individual’s natu -
ral brow shape, facial features, and personal preferences, ensuring that the result is unique and complementary to their overall appearance.
The procedure will take a minimum of two applications, with the first application taking between two and three hours. The practitioner will design and customize the brows to the client’s features and facial design, taking skin undertones into consideration. The second application is needed eight to twelve weeks after the initial application and will take between one and a half to two hours. Once brows are healed, this is a perfecting appointment to make any required adjustments, as every skin type and age group will heal differently. In some cases, a third application may be necessary. An annual maintenance appointment is strongly suggested to keep the shape and color looking sharp and vibrant. When looking for a practitioner to perform this procedure, you want an experienced and skilled professional who specializes in advanced eyebrow techniques. We always recommend you look for a practitioner who has taken a training course approved by the American Academy of Micropigmentation (AAM) and the Society of Permanent Makeup
This technique replicates the natural texture, flow & dimension of eyebrow hairs with exceptional detail, creating a lifelike & natural appearance.
Professionals (SPCP). Ask for before and after photos and always look at their website and social media accounts. The process requires a high level of artistry and precision to achieve the most natural-looking results.

Top Spa and Wellness Trends
Current Wellness Trends in 2024
The wellness landscape can be characterized by three main trends:
Personalization:
Customized wellness plans tailored to individual needs add a personal touch. One example is a tailored skin facial treatment based on your skin type, issues and goals.
Sustainability:
Clients seek sustainable ingredients in products like coconut oil and aloe. Spas may even use eco-friendly practices such as energy-efficient equipment.
Mental health:
Mental well-being initiatives, with their various mindful activities, are gaining popularity. Provide clients with holistic wellness experiences that address physical and mental health.
Impact of Emerging Technologies on Wellness Trends
There are various emerging technologies the wellness industry can use.
They include:
AI: AI and its capabilities help create personalized wellness plans.
VR: Virtual reality (VR) can offer immersive relaxation experiences.
Apps: Numerous apps can help with client engagement and convenience.
Wearables: Wearable devices provide real-time health data.
Tech-Driven Wellness
Trends in 2024
Consider adding these tech-driven wellness trends to your spa's menu:
AI skin analysis: AI tools can analyze skin and health data to create customized treatment plans.
VR experiences: VR can shape a new reality for your clients. Sculpt a relaxing environment to improve their experience.
Holographic sessions: Use holographics to guide clients through guided meditations or offer different types of yoga-
to add another layer of customization. These trends may take some time to reach certain regions. However, if you can travel to other countries, then you're lucky. For example, if you're a traveling nurse, you can find and relax at spas offering these services.
Challenges and Opportunities
Adopting these technologies can be expensive and require staff training. However, they offer many opportunities. These technologies can improve customer satisfaction and operational efficiency and help you stay ahead of the competition.
Future Outlook
Spas must continuously adapt. They must integrate these advanced technologies to meet client and market needs, which constantly change. We can expect more personalized, sustainable and comprehensive wellness solutions.
These technologies can improve customer satisfaction, operational efficiency & help you stay ahead of the competition.

Dermaplaning
The Evolution of Advancements for safer, superior treatments.
by Dr. Steven Hacker
Did you know that the 19th century marks the dawn of modern surgery?
Before the mid-1800s, surgical instruments weren’t sterilized, and X-rays were nonexistent. The risk of death from surgery was higher than survival.
A surgical patient today is far more fortunate than even 50 years ago. Time has made surgical instrument technology safer, better and easier to implement. With this in mind, I set out on a mission to enhance the safety of dermaplaning.
Why Dermaplaning?
The answer is simple. Dermaplaning is a popular, necessary procedure due to its ease and immediate results. But is it truly safe? Are the tools we use for dermaplaning the best they can be?
I challenged myself to create a new standard for estheticians performing dermaplaning. My goal was straightforward: ensure that highly trained professionals could achieve optimal results without compromising safety. This meant combining cutting-edge
safety technology and ergonomics with result-driven innovation.
A New Era of Dermaplaning Instruments
The task was clear: innovate beyond the outdated, century-old #3 scalpel handle, an inexpensive primitive tool that has only served to secure a #10 blade. It’s time to raise the bar. My aim was to develop an instrument that mechanically dermaplanes and provides better illumination, enabling estheticians to avoid “dermaplaning danger
zones” that are difficult to see in the low light ambience of spa settings .
Why should estheticians settle for primitive tools when performing cutting-edge treatments?
Using the outdated #3 handle is akin to performing surgery with 19th-century instruments—barbaric relics of a bygone era that have no place in today’s advanced medical field. The stainless steel #3 handle has remained unchanged for 100 years, and if you’re using it for dermaplaning, you’re relying on an instrument designed for surgery a century ago.
Enter Technology into the Dermaplaning Sphere
With the latest technological advancements, an instrument powered by Lumohs represents a quantum leap forward. This new tool isn’t just about holding a #10 blade anymore. It’s about integrating electronics, printed circuit boards, micro lightemitting devices, and advanced ergonomics into a single, sleek design. The handle’s weight and shape have been meticulously studied to reduce hand tension and maintain a 45-degree angle effortlessly. With sterilization experiments, luminosity measurements, and adherence to ISO standards, this technology has enabled a new era for dermaplaning.
Revolutionizing Safety in Dermaplaning
The most radical advancement brought by Lumohs technology is improved vision—an essential feature for performing dermaplaning safely. In a spa setting, where low light is often the norm, this enhanced visibility allows estheticians to identify and avoid danger zones like herpes, staph infections, sores, nevi and scars. Better vi-
sion means optimum efficiency- ensuring no patch of vellus hair is missed.
The larger, ergonomically shaped handle also makes dermaplaning safer. Whether held like a surgeon’s scalpel or a pencil, this design reduces the risk of accidental cuts. For estheticians who prefer a “claw” grip from above—four fingers on one side and the thumb on the other—the round handle glides perfectly parallel to the skin, offering more control and minimizing the chances of accidents.
For those with arthritis, muscle fatigue, or tired hands, the larger round handle provides relief, making the procedure less taxing on the hands.
Conclusion
The art of dermaplaning has finally caught up with technology, offering safer, more effective experiences for both the client and the esthetician. The Lumohs-powered dermaplane represents a new standard, combining modern innovation with time-tested practices to create the ultimate tool for estheticians. The future of dermaplan ing is here, and it’s brighter—literally and figuratively—than ever before.

An Esty’s First Year Journey: September
This month, Sofia shares how she makes time to perfect her skills with a busy school schedule.
What are some ways or methods you use to practice your skills?
When I want to perfect my facial techniques, mostly the massage portion, I’ll give facials to friends or family. I will also study videos online, just to refresh my memory or add any extra touches. When it comes to waxing, lashes, and brows, I’ll usually practice on myself or my sister. So anytime my sister or I need a brow wax or lash lift, I’m always prepared!
How do you find "participants" to practice on? Or is there an alternative (dummy, mannequin, etc)?
If I need someone to work on, I’ll usually ask my friends or family, if they’re available and interested. I mostly work on my mother and sister, just because they’re always willing to help.
If you're having trouble mastering a certain technique, how do you resolve that?
If I’m having trouble with something, I’ll usually try to do more research into it, whether that’s in my books or finding tutorials and lessons online.
twice a month. If I have more free time available, I’ll also take advantage of that.
How often do you work on your techniques?
With school becoming more and more challenging, I try to devote time to working on my techniques at least
Is it helpful to hone your skills in a group setting, like taking a course, or do you prefer practicing on your own time and terms?
Even though I enjoy studying and doing a lot of my work on my own, I feel that, esthetics-wise, I work and learn
better in a group setting. So, taking courses online or going to workshops helps me hone in on my skills more.
Esthetician Spotlight
Tanna Donalson Redbud Medical Spa
What is your business called and where are you located?
Redbud Medical Spa in Denver, Colorado.
Can you give a little information about your background in esthetics?
I am a physician assistant with a background in trauma and emergency medicine, but opened Redbud Medical Spa about eight years ago.
What inspired you to join the esthetics field?
I was inspired to venture into the aesthetics industry because I am motivated by providing quality women’s health care at my med spa and aesthetics is a vital and huge part of that. I also worked for a wonderful plastic surgeon in Oklahoma in my younger years and was deeply inspired by his creative work and how he treated each individual like a unique work of art.
What beauty philosophy do you stand by?
Less is more. I do think there’s a place and time for injectables, surgeries, etc., but I love taking good quality care of people's skin and watching them grow in confidence.
What is your favorite treatment?
IPL by a long shot. If I could only do one thing for people, it would be IPL! Get rid of that sun damage, tighten skin, and watch it glow!
What brands do you use and why?
I rotate through several medical grade products but only have a select few that are my favorites. I believe in quality skin care that is accessible and affordable. It doesn’t have to break the bank or have crazy technology. I would much rather spend less money and focus on CLEAN products, clear ingredients, and a simple routine.
What is your secret to beautiful skin?
Back to IPL! I think IPL is the majority of the reason my skin stays looking young, but I also think diet plays a huge role.
What are your favorite tools to use in the treatment room and why?
I have become a big fan of using topical compounds that are tailor made for each individual based on their needs. I have seen incredible progress with topical formulas. They aren’t sexy and they don’t smell like flowers but I prescribe compounds with ingredients to target problem areas and it works better than anything else I can offer.
What is your favorite part about working for your company?
Women make up over 90 percent of my patient population. I am deeply passionate about taking wonderful care of women, as they are hard wired to take care of everyone around them. Being able to provide a space where they can let their hair down and be taken care of brings me so much joy.

Buccal Facial
Some clients may benefit from more frequent sessions, especially if they are dealing with specific concerns like TMJ
Our designer, Stephanie, who suffers from TMJ, heard that Buccal facials are a great way to alleviate the associated pain and symptoms. This month, she visited the Daily Habits Wellness Club to test drive this treatment and see if it worked for her. Lola, founder and esthetician at Daily Habits, shares the details with us!
Revitalizing Serum by Schaf
This powerhouse anti-aging serum dramatically brightens, hydrates, plumps, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and dark spots. schafskincare.com
Can you describe the process for the Buccal facial?
The facial begins with a thorough cleansing to remove makeup, dirt, and impurities from the skin. Then, a gentle exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells and prepares the skin for the massage. Next, a deep massage is performed inside the mouth, targeting the muscles of the cheeks, jawline, and around the mouth. This helps to release tension, improve circulation, and tone the facial muscles. The massage continues externally on the face to complement the internal work, focusing on the cheeks, jawline, and neck. Finally, a soothing mask is applied, followed by moisturizing to hydrate and nourish the skin.
How does it help a condition like TMJ?
The Buccal facial can relieve tension in the jaw muscles, which is particularly beneficial for those suffering from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders. By massaging the muscles inside and outside the mouth, it reduces muscle tightness, alleviates jaw pain, and improves the range of motion.
What other benefits come from the treatment?
It promotes lymphatic drainage, which reduces puffiness and swelling, and also helps with improved circulation, facial contouring, and tension relief.
