MASKNE
How to treat and prevent face-mask breakouts
by Kara McLucas-Mark
“Maskne” seems like a new noun in the repertoire of skin enthusiasts and magazine articles, however, it is now being used as a different name for a condition that has been around for a while. Maskne has recently been acknowledged as a condition by the American Academy of Dermatology, but it can also be classified as a type of acne mechanica. Acne mechanica is local exacerbations due to pressure, friction, rubbing, squeezing, or stretching. It is mainly seen in athletes that wear protective gear such as chin straps of helmets. It presents in the way of contact dermatitis, pustules, papules, and comedones. Although it may appear to be common acne, it is actually much more sensitive and requires a light-handed approach. “Maskne” on the other hand, is something that has popped up overnight and is mentioned across multiple media platforms. Maskne is acne mechanica caused by wearing a mask that causes friction and the clogging of follicles with dirt, bacteria, sweat, and skin cells. Typically, it is seen along the jawline, cheekbones, and around the nose. Oily skin types and ones with preexisting conditions such as rosacea or acne are more prone to seeing the irritation and complications of wearing a mask.

skin Maskne
Maskne is best managed by using the minimum number of products on the face. Masks provide very little ventilation whether you are wearing an N95, handmade, medical grade, or multiples. As one wears their mask whether for a short shopping trip or for a prolonged period of time, one’s natural bacteria is being breathed back onto the face, creating a warm, humid environment for it to flourish. This not only leads to acne but can cause staph infections, sties, and heightening of preexisting conditions like rosacea. Areas around the mouth or eyes can also develop perioral/periocular dermatitis, which is a distinct eruption of papules around the mouth or eyes. This tends to look more like a rash and can be confused with contact dermatitis. The mask’s material is also something to consider in the prevention and treatment of maskne. Cotton is a more breathable fabric and can help to reduce any irritation from wearing the mask. If you are required by your place of employment to wear a disposable or N95 mask, applying a moisturizer can help lessen the friction caused by long-term wear. Cleaning the masks regularly is also advised. Washing the cotton masks in warm water daily is suggested to remove all residual bacteria and dirt. If you have a disposable mask that you have been wearing multiple days, letting it air out in between wears is suggested. One may also be able to microwave the mask if there are no metal parts or flammable material. In one’s younger years, it can be assumed that a fair amount of people thought that hitting acne hard with everything we had was the best course of action to remove the unsightly lesions fast. This would not be the case 12

with this type of acne mechanica. Slow, steady, and gentle wins the race for unblemished skin. One must get down to the basics of skin care to actually take care of their skin and not just treat it. Maskne is best managed by using the minimum number of products on the face. Going back to a gentle, unfragranced cleanser is suggested to minimize irritation from active ingredients or exfoliants. One can still use chemical exfoliants but in tempered amounts and less frequently. We want to keep the natural skin barrier intact so it may serve its function as a barrier to the mask’s friction. Dermatologists are suggesting the daily usage of a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, toner, and moisturizer to aid in repairing the skin’s barrier and clearing away any regular debris. If one has cropping of papules or pustules along the mask line, a benzoyl peroxide wash can be used once a day to help dry the blemishes and remove remaining bacteria. No 10% spot treatments or aggressive washes; try shooting for a 2.5% or lower of the active ingredient to avoid irritation. Moisturizer also plays a large role. Even if you have oily or actinic skin, a moisturizer helps keep a balance as well as provide a “glide” for the mask. Anti-aging products are hard during this time because they tend to cause a higher cell turnover that can lead to irritation and skin barrier disruption. Applying those products at night and potentially rotating days, so more than one type of product is not being used at the same time. If a client has contact dermatitis, it will lean more towards a rash-like appearance. This irritation in relation to mask-wearing is found more on the
LNEonline.com
bridge of the nose, cheekbones, and the tip of the nose. This should not be treated with a benzoyl peroxide wash but instead with hydrocortisone cream to alleviate itching and redness. However, hydrocortisone cream, even in its lowest percentage, can cause sensitivity and thinning of the skin, which could exacerbate the condition. This maskne affliction is best treated by minimal product, keeping the masks clean, and refraining from touching one’s face. Where does makeup have a place in wearing a mask out? Sadly, it doesn’t have much of one. We should encourage our clients to go without makeup as often as possible. Nobody is going to appreciate a full-face contour when they can only see your eyes. Now is the time to invest in a good BB or CC cream, eyebrow pencil, and mascara. Staying light-handed with the makeup will also help prevent clogging pores any further. If one has to be out for a function where masks can be removed safely, and distance maintained, a full face of makeup won’t hurt, but be sure to cleanse the face gently and thoroughly as soon as possible. Cutting back on time in the mask is crucial, so minimizing time in areas where it is mandatory is not only good for your skin but also for your health. While maskne may be a new term, it is not a new condition. Hands-off is the best approach as well as going back to the basics with our skin care routine and makeup. The skin is already irritated, so soothing, repairing, and protecting is the primary goal when treating maskne.

Meadowood
Napa Valley Resort & Spa An All-Suite Spa Experience by Samantha Garcia

spa Spa Of The Month
There’s so much more to Napa Valley than it’s wine scene. Aside from the world’s finest luxurious wines offering some serious vinotherapy, the beautiful Meditteranean climate, expansive views, grand estates, quaint towns, and legendary hospitality are what make Napa Valley one of the most attractive places to visit in the U.S. The true essence of relaxation, you can spend your day at an easy-going pace while wine tasting, feasting on farm to table cuisine, and unwinding at an award-winning spa. The Meadowood Spa at Meadowood Napa Valley Resort & Spa is the perfect escape from the city’s bustle. A place where nature and architecture enjoy a particularly intimate relationship, you can enjoy a luxurious and grounding spa treatment in your private oasis at the intuitive touch of your therapists.
SPA OF THE MONTH
THE SUITE ENVIRONMENT Guests have their own private space in the spa with every amenity needed so that they never have to relocate or move unless they choose to use the relaxation garden. Treatments can also be experienced at the Treehouse Retreat speciality room, which is partly open to the elements of nature and includes a fireplace and hand-hammered copper tub for custom baths. “Our spa facilities and treatment menu are designed to help our guests slow down. Take time to breathe, enjoy our gorgeous surroundings and connect with nature, our amazing staff, and yourself! Our all-suite concept gives you the gift of time and being present,” says Conte. The Meadowood Spa also features a men and women garden lounge with mineral soaking pools, eucalyptus steam rooms, dry cedar saunas, indoor and outdoor showers, and al fresca relaxation areas.
THE ESSENTIAL JOURNEY The Meadowood Spa’s most popular treatment is the Essential Journey (90 min, $225). The treatment includes any one of the spa’s massages, facials, or body treatments paired with an additional 30 minutes to help ease guests in and out of their treatment.
The journey begins with a lifestyle consultation where the therapist comes up with a treatment plan. “A personalized aromatherapy steam is prepared for you to begin your relaxation, followed by your curated therapy, and we complete your service with an organic kombucha elixir to allow for gentle recovery. A treat for all senses, this allows our guests not to feel rushed through their experience and to fully enjoy our all-suite concept,” says Spa Director Michael Conte. Guests can choose from Reflexology, Swedish, Deep Tissue, and other massages, or facials like the Hydrafacial and Radiance facial. Conte’s personal favorite is the Pietro Simone Prestige Facial. “This 90-minute treatment, offered at $350, is a luxury experience featuring incredible, effective products and a unique lifting dry massage technique with cotton thread exfoliation for stunning red carpet ready results.”
MARKETING The Meadowood Spa promotes its services through its resort guestrooms, members, and word of mouth. Many of the spa’s guests cannot wait to return as the spa experience is one of the best they have had. This proves that marketing and social media can only go so far; it is an exceptional service that keeps visitors returning. “Our marketing team works with several kinds of hospitality partners, we offer resort packages that include spa, work with local wineries, and are increasing our followers on social media. I find Instagram is a fun way to interact with our visitors and past guests to keep them up to date with what Meadowood is doing,” says Conte.
TRAINING The Meadowood Spa takes training very seriously, and it is done regularly. The spa offers a combination of new modality training, standard service training, and retail training. “I like to have a variety of outside professionals come in to train the team, and I enjoy facilitating training as well on various topics. I offer leadership trainings at the resort and like to keep my team moving forward with knowl-

edge. We aim to have smaller meetings monthly for treatment providers and spa concierge separately and all-staff meetings quarterly,” explains Conte. In addition to these trainings, the staff is provided a daily printed line up called Spa Buzz that serves as a mini news feed, containing important information on it for the day. This helps ensure that everyone is on the same page before starting their shift. Staff performance is reviewed annually, but the leadership team is encouraged to host brief check-ins quarterly to discuss staff performance with retail sales, guest satisfaction, career growth, and personal goals.
At the spa’s boutique, guests will find everything from skincare to home accessories, books, jewelry, handbags, apparel, and gift items. “I work with vendors that are luxury, practice sustainability, and are not easily found all over. I prefer to curate items that are unique and special. Our professional September2020

business In the Treatment Room
Did you always love beauty and skin? I’ve been obsessed with beauty products since I was a child. I also really paid attention to photography, magazine ads, and commercials. As I grew up, I started out wanting to be a photographer, then a makeup artist. I went to esthetics school for makeup, but really fell in love with skincare and taking care of people one-on-one, and that was that. I gave myself a year once I got licensed to see how it would be, and I never looked back.
What’s your favorite part about being an esthetician? When I opened my salon in 2006 with my husband, I knew that I wanted to focus on teaching people that we could strive to be the best version of ourselves by doing things in a minimal way. I wanted the facials to be so special that my clients would leave their treatments so happy that they would tell their friends about it. My focus has always been about using beauty technology and results-driven treatments. I am known for vetting the latest technologies and putting together a customized protocol for each individual client. It’s that quality that has made my salon successful and makes me excited about my work every single day. I use
non-invasive and minimal treatments in my salon because I truly believe it’s the right path to real beauty, and every woman I know will tell you that real beauty comes from how we feel about ourselves and not from what people tell us. My focus has been and will always remain on restoring confidence! I preach to people every day that there is no magic solution; anyone can achieve the skin they want. You have to take care of your whole body, not just the skin on your face. That’s why I focus on providing treatments that will give a glow from head-to-toe. As I created my skincare line, I wanted my products to be luxurious in experience and for clients to feel like they were getting a piece of my services with every use. Results, of course, were my goal with every formula. All the products in my line do a variety of things and are made for everyone – they truly are the foundation for healthy skin!

What are your top three secrets to beautiful skin? 1. Skincare – With the proper cleansing, sufficient hydration, gentle exfoliation, and a few more easy steps, everyone can see dramatic results to their skin in a matter of weeks. While it’s important to think of the ingredients you apply to your face as nutrition— they should be nonirritating and, like a healthy meal, leave you feeling better than you did before—the products themselves aren’t the full equation. Following a solid skincare routine day after day lays the foundation for healthy skin. Once you get into the swing of your customized routine, it will become a habit like any other that you can keep up for the rest of your life. 2. Self-Care – The most radiant, healthy-looking men and women I see in my salon every day are those who’ve mastered the art of self-care. Sure, it helps that they choose the right prod-

ucts and treatments and don’t eat foods that are bad for them, but they’ve also come to understand that being kind to themselves is as essential to the health of their skin as moisturizer, exfoliation, and eating lots of greens. They pay attention to their bodies, get plenty of sleep, work on reducing stress, exercise, and make time for connection and joy. 3. Spa Routine – Giving facials is my job, so I’m biased, but I’m convinced that getting regular facials can take your skin to the next level and help to erase years from your face. I know facials can be expensive. You might spend sixty dollars at some spas, even for just a half-hour, or hundreds of dollars at others. I understand that you can only do what your budget allows, but I think women often underestimate the benefits of self-care. Your skin is a lifetime commitment. You came into this world wearing just your skin, and you’ll leave with it on as well. It’s worth it. You are worth it. So think hard about
LNEonline.com
how you spend your money and carefully consider whether the occasional facial is worth it.
Can you share with us one of your best tricks in the treatment room? I always recommend LED light therapy to help keep the skin calm and restore strength and health to the skin. LED Light Therapy uses red and infrared light to reduce inflammation, build collagen, and speed the healing of the body. It’s a great instant glow, and the long-term benefits are lessening of lines on the face, thickening of the skin, and overall healthy glowing skin! In my salon, we do several different treatments that involve LED light. Still, the most popular is my patented RevitaLight Bed, which gives a client a full-body LED Light Therapy treatment. It’s the perfect end to a facial, especially after microdermabrasion or laser treatments.
business In the Treatment Room
Your most popular celebrity facial: The Triple Crown Facial is my signature facial, and my number one requested service. I use a mild electric current to drain puffiness, tone muscle, tighten skin, and contour the face. By the end of the first treatment, the jawline will be more defined, cheekbones more pronounced, and eyes will look younger and refreshed. There is no downtime, the results are instant, and the effects are cumulative! Since I designed this treatment myself, it is only available in my salon.
Top glowing ingredients: Jojoba is awesome for everyone, even for my acne-prone clients. Jojoba tells the body to stop overproducing sebum, so it controls oily skin. I have it in my Rejuvenating Serum. Vitamin C is another key ingredient that everyone needs, like in my Rescue Serum. And retinol is amazing for a nighttime regimen. I recommend anyone who is seeing the first signs of aging to incorporate a retinol into their PM routine.
How did you get where you are today, and who/what helped you along the way? I think a lot of hard work and treating clients as dear friends. I care for them, and they know it. I put a lot of heart into my clients’ care and into the space I create for my staff. We are all people who love what we do and I think you feel that the second you walk through the door.
How do you manage to own a spa, being an esthetician, and owning a skincare line? What is the best piece of advice for those aspiring to do the same? For those looking to expand their careers in the same way, I have some simple advice. Listen to your gut. I have made some really bold moves, but if they feel right you have to go for it!
What keeps you going through challenging times? I usually draw motivation from my clients! Every client has their own personal story with their skin, but most people think your skin is about your DNA. Part of what I do is educate my clients and explain that your skin is telling a story about what’s happening inside your body or happening in your life. Educating and empowering people to love their skin helps get me through the difficult times.
What do you believe is the secret to your success? Always striving to be the best at what I do for me. I’m my own competition, not anyone else. That and making it clear to people that beauty is for everyone. It was my main motivation for writing my book, Glow From Within.

How to effectively use Instagram LIVE for your business by Mika Diaz
Instagram is an incredible tool for businesses. Some even refer to it as the NEW business card. But in reality, it is so much more than just a social media platform. Instagram is constantly updating its platform with tools for small businesses to grow and gain brand awareness. In the following paragraphs, we will be going over how to maximize your exposure on social media and how to boost sales using one of Instagram’s most engaging features, Instagram Live. Going LIVE is a great way to drive engagement, gain followers, and sell products! When utilized to its maximum potential, of course. What does that mean? Don't worry, we are here to teach you! The first thing you must know is that there are no retakes on Instagram LIVE. Once you have finalized your session, you must immediately save the stream (Instagram will prompt you to do so before closing the live session). On a positive note, your IG LIVE will remain on your page for 24 hours so viewers can tune in on the segment. You have probably read or heard that the best way to connect with your followers is by being; authentic, transparent, and direct. During a live stream, you can achieve this in so many different ways! Followers can submit their comments and question in real-time, making it feel like you are face to face with them. For example, if you have a new treatment or product you are looking to sell, a live stream is perfect for you. Your followers and viewers will be able to ask questions and get answers on the spot. This is great for the skincare and spa industry, which relies very much on demonstrations and results. Now you can showcase new treatments and so much more to your clients (and prospective clients). Hosting a LIVE is also beneficial when it comes to boosting your discoverability on Instagram, which is the name of the game. Why may you ask? Every time you go LIVE, your fol-
lowers will receive an in-app notification that you have started to stream, and your stream will also be bumped to the front of Instagram stories feed!
LET’S GO LIVE… SHALL WE? The first step to going LIVE is opening your Stories camera and swiping to the “LIVE” mode. Once you have done this, we always recommend giving your viewers a few moments before beginning your session, so start with an introduction to provide your followers with a minute or two to join in! It is always recommended to have a tripod handy (and set up beforehand) to hold up your device so that your viewers can hear you loud and clear. If you will be showcasing products or a specific treatment, we also recommend having all of your items ready and prepped beforehand. The great thing about Instagram LIVE is that it can be used for so much more than using it to talk to your followers yourself. The Co-hosting feature allows you to double up on engagement and gain a greater following by joining with another person! Try reaching out to the brands you use in your spa and see if they would like to collaborate. Chances are they will say yes, and both parties will be able to engage a broader audience. GET BOOKED! Five tips for booking clients through Instagram by Susan Talamantes
No matter what area of the beauty world you specialize in, you need an Instagram account that accurately represents your brand and attracts clients. Not only do you want to attract your ideal clients, but you also want to book them! It starts with first being seen, then capturing their attention, helping them get to know you and your business, and inviting them to take the final step, booking you. Investing in your Instagram account not only leads to more bookings in your calendar, but it gives you a whole new level of confidence! STEP 1: Optimizing Your Bio You have 150 characters to deliver your potential new client information that will help them understand your business basics and how you can help them. As they're reading your bio, they're figuring out if you are the right fit for them and what they're looking for in a skin therapist or makeup artist. So here's what you absolutely need in your bio:
• Who you are - your name, of course • What you do - the services you provide • The areas / locations you serve • Any awards and/or achievements • A call to action and a link to take the next step A lot of times beauty professionals get hung up on the "awards and achievements" part. Get creative! Are you licensed? Have you taken any additional certifications? How many years of experience do you have under your belt? Make sure the information is clear, straight to the point, and easy to read.
STEP 2: Capture the Lead The very last line in your bio should include a call to action. This is where you tell your new client what you would like them to do next. I always encourage selecting an action step that is closest to securing the booking. From years of experience, I have learned that making a personal connection with a client is crucial. I like to invite the client to book a free phone consultation with my team first.

Social Media Guide I love using Calendly for clients to schedule a 15 minute call easily. You can also send them to the contact page on your website to fill out your contact form.
STEP 3: Design Your Brand to Attract Your Ideal Client Remember, on Instagram, you have only a few seconds to capture the client's attention. Make sure your branding is appealing to the type of bookings you want and the personalities you want to attract. Get crystal clear here, grab a pen and paper, and define who it is you serve. Maybe you are a makeup artist who enjoys working with Brides who are attracted to boho vibes. She wants her wedding morning to be chill, relaxing, and care-free. After you've defined your favorite client, you can now design the aesthetic of your Instagram Brand around what your ideal client wants and likes!
online portfolio, you can choose to work with a professional photographer or use your own camera. What's important is that your photos are cohesive and flow well together. To achieve this, you'll have to define your photo guidelines, while also considering your brand. For example, you can choose to post light and airy photos with a clean background, neutral or blush tones, and showcase headshots versus full-body images. If your ideal client is a travel-loving Destination Bride, you may want to use photos that are a mixture of scenic and headshots, as she will be attracted to the scenery. It's helpful also to define what will NOT be posted. In other words, what are your deal breakers? For example, if a photo is too dark or blurry, you won't post it because it doesn’t fit within your guidelines.
STEP 5: Get Seen! STEP 4: Set Photo Guidelines Designing a perfectly curated Instagram Feed, where every photo matches, including the colors and photo editing, was a dream of mine that I felt was impossible at first! Over the years, I learned that you don't have to have a perfect Instagram Feed to gain more bookings, but it does need to be attractive. The goal is to keep the potential client browsing your page, learning about your services, and interested long enough to finally take the next step. When building your
Dr. Jeff Collagen Treatment with MatriCol ÂŽ Freeze-Dried Collagen Mask
You've done all the work to build an online presence that you are proud of, you're putting your best foot forward, and appealing to your ideal client. Now it's time to get some more eyeballs on your account. The most effective way to gain visibility on Instagram is to take advantage of every searchable aspect. We all know that your Username is searchable, but did you know that the bold portion in your bio, located right under your profile photo, is also searchable? That means you can add specific keywords that your ideal clients would be searching. Use keywords such as your location and the services you provide. Hashtags are another excellent way to be seen. The most effective hashtags are location specific and the services you provide. You are allowed 30 hashtags per photo you post. Use hashtags for every city, area, and surrounding areas you serve and then also swap out the type of services you provide. Lastly, you'll need to post consistently! How often you post is up to you and depends on how quickly you would like to grow. Two to three posts a week is a good starting point. Keep in mind that you are opening your business to more eyes every time you post and use hashtags. If you have a business account, you can use the insights tool to track your statistics and see what times of the day are the best times to post for your specific audience. Take the time to implement each of these steps, and you'll be well on your way to converting your Instagram account into a lead generator, while also authentically connecting with your favorite clients! Self-Care At

Techniques to promote self-care and wellness for you and your clients by Sherrie Tennessee
September is National Self-care Month! With many of us still working from home, self-care at home is more important than ever. Self-care has become synonymous with wellness, which is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being by the World Health Organization. Diving deeper into the idea of self-care and wellness is a concept that goes beyond disease to address the notion of well-being. Well-being has become mainstream and is related to the approach of comfort, health, and happiness. With many unable to achieve those moments in spas, creating the spa environment at home has become the new focus of self-care and well-being. A recent Washington Post article noted an 85% increase in wellness-focused apps. The question becomes what techniques can be used at home to promote a sense of self-care and wellness.

DRY BRUSHING In speaking with Shelley Birnbaum, Master Esthetician with over 20 years of experience in the industry, Shelley suggested the traditional Ayurvedic practice of dry brushing as her top self-care at-home technique. Dry body brushing usage was noted for centuries dating back to India, China, and ancient Egypt. According to Shelley, dry brushing is used to stimulate the lymphatic system and aide in the removal of toxins. The technique is an exfoliation that differs from a body scrub. It also improves circulation in the skin, encouraging the elimination of metabolic waste. As the largest organ in the body, the therapeutic benefits of dry brushing aids in the toning and tightening of the skin and gives an overall glow by reducing dead skin and dry patches. Here are a few tips for incorporating dry brushing into a daily routine. 1 Select a natural-bristle brush. There are brushes without a handle or long handles to get your back. 2 Start at the feet and move upward toward the head, using a circular motion, brushing toward the heart to increase blood and lymph flow. 3 For the most beneficial dry brush before taking a bath or shower, consider dry brushing in the morning as a means to boost energy. 4 Reminder - Avoid areas with open wounds, rashes or other sensitive areas.
FACIAL MASSAGE Continuing on my quest for the best self-care practices, going from the body to the face, I spoke with Despina Freimanis, a Skincare Specialist and Educator for Christine Valmy International School for Esthetics, Skin Care and Makeup. Despina recommends a facial massage as a part of a weekly at-home routine. The first 46
September2020
step after cleansing and exfoliating is to apply a generous amount of a night cream or facial oil to the face with slow, upward movements. Remember to use gentle pressure, as too much pressure can damage the skin and the collagen and elastin fibers underneath. Once you reach the zygomatic bone (cheekbones), use your middle finger and ring finger to apply light pressure with a tapping, lift movement upward toward the temple (forehead), and stop at the temple. The step can be done in three actions, with light pressure at the temple after each repetition. This technique will help lift the skin and ease tension. Next, using a movement called “piano” around your eyes and all over your face. Using your pointer, middle, and ring fingers, lightly tap all around the eyes from the outside inward towards the nose and upwards back around the eyebrows. You can enhance the effects with the addition of eye cream or serum for an added pick-me-up. Next, go all around the face in an upward motion using the same technique. Repeat this step several times, then stop with light pressure on the temples. This movement is excellent for stimulating circulation and helps soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Now a mask can be applied to the face with cool cotton compresses over your eyes. Lastly, remove the mask and compress, then using the middle finger and ring finger, apply the same light pressure, press and hold mov-

ing across the eyebrows from the nose until reaching the temple. Repeating this several times will also assist in lifting and toning while providing some much-needed tension relief. With just a few added touches to your existing at-home routine, this 30 – 60-minute ritual can prepare you for anything, including another round of Zoom calls.
DAILY WELLNESS PRACTICES Lastly, moving the concept of self-care at home from external into internal wellness brings to mind Deepak Chopra’s “Pillars of Wellness” which includes getting enough sleep, daily meditation, controlling our emotions, especially in regards to anger, moving our body daily, whether it be walking or yoga, and rounding out the list with eating healthy. It is the daily practices that become routines and ultimately create joy, wellness, and self-care in our lives.

Brow Lamination 101
Give your clients the feathery brows of their dreams by Jaclyn Peresetsky
Redefining one’s facial features has been all the rage for the last five years. Lash lifts have been the top requested service, but brows are now starting to take center stage by getting a “lift” of their own. Brow lifts, or “brow lamination,” as it’s called in our industry, originated in Russia and has recently made its way to the west. The brow technique trains brow hair to “lift” and head in a vertical direction while also providing the hair to take on a slick high shine and fuller appearance. Brows truly frame the face, so having a consistent brow shape is something that many women desire.

image Brow Lamination 101
The Perfect Candidate Brow lamination is perfect for someone who has unruly brows, thinning brows, or brows that naturally curl or curve downward. This can be due to age, illness, medications, diet, or stress. Your clients may notice their brows thinning, or it just may look like they are thinning because the hairs lay on top of each other or in a downward position. As we age, brow hairs lose their density, making the hairs “droop” and not stay upright. In fact, starting in your 30’s, your clients may begin using a brow pencil, brow gel, or pomade to fill in some of the brow gaps. This is a sign that they may want to do something more to manage their brows. To better manage their brows, some women have turned to microblading while others are more skittish on this more permanent procedure. Brow lamination is a great alternative to microblading. It is pain-free, non-invasive, and costs a fraction of the cost of microblading. Also, clients who want to dip their toes into an altered brow shape can give brow lamination a try before a more permanent commitment.
What the Client Wants When planning the outcome of your clients’ brow shape after brow lamination, talk with your client about arch placement, where the tail should end, and whether they want their brow hairs to take on a fluffy, full effect or smooth, slickly effect. These variables will change the techniques you use in the brow lamination. Brow artists can make the brow appear manicured or wild, and it all depends on the desire of the client and the recommendation from the brow artist. Brow lamination will last 6- 8 weeks with the right aftercare, so it’s important to have these discussions before the procedure begins.
The Process Once the shape and direction of the brow hairs are determined, the brow artist applies a perming solution, also 52
September2020
known as a lifting solution, to the brow hairs and uses a doe tip application to brush and push into the strands. This solution removes the disulphide bonds through a chemical processing so that the hair can start to bend and become flexible. Once the appropriate time has passed, the brow artist will remove the lifting solution and apply a neutralizing setting solution to the brow hairs with a disposable mascara wand or doe tip applicator. This solution repairs the bonds so that the hair will remain in place. Keep in mind that timing is crucial in this service. One minute short or one minute too much can make or break the brows lifting. The processing time will change depending on the hair type, such as fine, dry and sparse or thick, coarse, and dense. At this point, the brow artist will comb or smooth the brow hairs into the desired place, either vertical or angled out. If the brow artist uses the mascara wand in this step, the brows will be fluffy. If the brow artist uses the doe tip applicator, the brow hair will have a smooth and flatter finish. Once the processing time has completed for the setting solution, the brow artist can move forward with tinting and shaping the brow.
LNEonline.com
Aftercare The key to brow lamination longevity is what the client does post service. It is crucial for them not to get the brows wet for 24 hours or be in humidity. It is also important that the client sleeps on their back and not face down as the brow hairs can be altered the first 24 hours. The results can last up to six weeks. Brow lamination provides instant gratification for the client as well as for the brow artist. This service pairs well with lash lift and tint services and can be completed by alternating between the brows and lashes. Not only does this keep the service provider super busy, but by the end of the hour, the brows and lashes will be lifted, tinted, and transformed, leaving you with a very happy client!
