But massaging inside the face? This can be a much more elevated experience and can create immediately noticeable results. The other bonus? skin Intra-oral Buccal Massage

Intraoral Buccal Massage is a treatment in which a specially trained esthetician (or massage therapist) uses gloves to enter the mouth and massages the internal workings of the jaw. This includes the lateral pterygoids, the buccinator, the buccal fat pads, and most importantly, the masseter. The benefits of this specialized massage are endless. The massaging of the masseter aids in releasing muscular tension in the jaw which can accumulate from stress, clenching, teeth grinding, or simple overuse. It also provides much relief for those suffering from chronic jaw pain or TMJ (and tension headaches related to such) as clenching and grinding seemingly dissipate afterwards. Clients often report a restful night of sleep after only one session, as the massage not only relieves the muscular tension, but also encourages relaxation of the parasympathetic system, thus alleviating stress to the nervous system. The release of tension in the masseter creates a clear pathway for lymph to flow through the muscles and down the neck, without any restriction of muscle tension hindering the flow. This draining of lymph de-puffs the face, resulting in a slimmed and angular jawline, and a natural cheekbone contour. Also important is the effect on the rest of the body. Studies have shown the jaw to be physiologically connected to the pelvis, via the fascia and central vagus nerve. So, intra-oral massage performed on the face proves beneficial not only for esthetic & beauty reasons, but also for reducing muscular tension and imbalances in the hips. During an intra-oral massage, the buccinator muscle and buccal fat pads are also massaged in the process. This naturally pronounces the hollows of the cheeks as it helps to release and move any excess (lymph) fluid or toxins stored in the soft tissue of the cheeks. Moving these stagnant fluids is incredibly beneficial for the skin, too, as it affects the underlying layers. This can assist in better product penetration and

improve recurring (inflammatory) skin conditions caused by accumulations of stagnant lymph (ie, acne). With hands inside the mouth, a skilled professional will also target the lateral pterygoids. This is a muscle that attaches to the sphenoid bone - a butterfly shaped bone located inside the skull. This bone oscillates in miniature movements, opening and closing almost like it is breathing. The massaging of this attachment aids and improves the postural alignment of the face, creating a sense of balance and openness within the facial structure. Finally, the surrounding muscles of the mouth like the depressors, levators, orbicularis oris, risorius, etc. are also massaged, lifting the mouth to a natural resting smiling position as the muscles become more toned. It’s easy to become hooked on intraoral buccal massage - and understandably so! What’s incredible about this treatment is that results become long lasting with repetitive sessions. The more one receives these treatments, the better the results. A series of weekly treatments is suggested until desired results are achieved. This can range anywhere from 6-24 weekly sessions, depending on a client’s age, skin type, and lifestyle. Once a weekly series is completed, it is suggested that a client follow up with monthly sessions to maintain results.

The repeated, consistent sessions result in the utmost natural enhancement of the musculoskeletal facial structure. The goal is to create firmer and healthier skin resulting in a slimmed face, angular jawline, contoured cheekbones and resting smile - all natural enhancements to one’s natural beauty within. As skin care professionals, you may have noticed that recently, Facial Cupping has grown in popularity within the mainstream beauty world. More and more beauty and bodywork therapists have started to incorporate it into the treatments they offer as the demand for natural, yet powerful facial treatments have reached a fever pitch. Even though Facial Cupping may sound new, it’s actually rooted in ancient healing tradition, often featured within Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cupping was originally used on the body to alleviate pain and treat many health conditions. It’s even said to be the oldest healing method used to fight illness.

Thousands of years later, it’s still being used. Why? Because it’s working. If it wasn’t, it would’ve long been forgotten. So, What are the Main Benefits of Facial Cupping? 1. Not only does it relax the tension we have on our faces, but it also improves physical imbalances that show, and it helps release stuck emotions. Does it cause any bruising? Many patients worry about the potential for bruising with Facial Cupping. The idea of leaving a visible mark on a patient can also be stressful for the practitioner. With the right technique and pressure, Facial Cupping should not cause any bruising. Using facial cups made from flexible, light, BPA-free silicone can help control the intensity of the suction, and reduce the presence of any cupping marks. When we practice Facial Cupping, even though blood is brought to the surface, the cup is not left static long enough to cause any cupping mark. However, there’s often a light‘redness’ following a facial cupping session that’s associated with an increased amount of

blood in a local area. This is a beneficial response of the body to help get more oxygen and nutrients to the facial cupping site. So don’t panic! It’ll fade away within a few seconds to a few hours and your face will be left glowing! How do I get started if I want to start offering Facial Cupping to my clients? Whether you’re a beauty therapist, reflexologist, acupuncturist, massage therapist, or hold any other qualifications in the beauty of the bodywork world, you’re definitely a good candidate. Make sure you practice at least ten sessions on yourself and on any member of your family or friends before you start taking on paying clients. After that, you'll be ready to see a new type of client walk into your salon!

TREATMENT ROOMS AND AMENITIES There are 11 treatment rooms and three are dedicated to esthetics. Many of the treatment rooms have showers and private baths. There is one spa pool, three jacuzzis, one cold plunge, one dry cedar sauna, one eucalyptus steam room, and one outdoor shower. There is also one steam room available in each female and male locker room. “All of our treatment rooms have a private patio with a shower and fountain. Four of our treatment rooms, two of which are our couples rooms, have private baths, as well. This allows our guests to truly feel that they are in their own private oasis and also creates an extra intimate experience for all of our couple treatments,” explains Kosky.

The spa has an amazing wellness team of aestheticians and therapists. We have a wonderful training program for each position within the team. When someone is hired, they work closely with a trainer and mentor from their sub-department. We recurringly provide Forbes training with our team as well,” explains Kosky. Staff performance is consistently reviewed through a quarterly two-hour meeting. The staff takes this time together to share personal and professional achievements and connect over a fun and activity-filled gathering. “We have frequent praise from our visiting guests and find it helpful and inspiring to review these with our team when we learn about them,” says Kosky.

REVENUE AND RETAIL The Spa at Rancho Valencia displays a handful of local and Southern California Vendors. Set & Stones is a womenowned and operated jewelry brand featuring high-quality materials from 14k gold to sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Lawless makeup is a clean beauty brand that formulates highlypigmented and long-lasting makeup. The retail room also carries Lilash and Alo Yoga to support their local vendors as much as possible. “When looking for vendors, we look for sustainable, local brands to make sure what we are sourcing vendors who contribute positively to the environment. We select based on the need for what we have to offer during the guest experience,” explains Kosky.

Selling is easy as the spa’s team of service providers is extremely knowledgeable about what products are best suited for guests in terms of their home care regimen. The spa’s revenue composition reflects that massages are far more in demand than facials, but this is usually the care with resort spas. “That said, we remain quite committed in terms of our schedule of availability for facials, as we have a dedicated roster of local regulars who wholly depend on our aestheticians for their skincare, in addition to visiting resort guests,” explains Kosky.

#1. THE TIMING The time between the moment you find your perfect place and the time you move into it is longer than you think. A lot goes into finding the final price before crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s.

Regenerative Skincare Guide A lot of clients in the Tri-state area love dermaplaning during the summer months because the sun really shows any little glimmer of peach fuzz. Even though the hair is more visible during the warmer months because of fewer clothes or a stronger sunray, I do not recommend it. Hair is a protective layer that one could argue is good for your skin and mico-biome year-round. I tell my clients if they are looking to dermaplane simply for the aesthetic of hair/ peach fuzz removal, then be vigilant (in any scenario) with SPF, and if it’s sunny, hide your face in the shade, covered by a hat. However, I LOVE Dermaplaning clients in the months leading up to summer as it gives a beautiful, physical exfoliation to the skin if performed properly. There are many benefits to this treatment, such as the removal of baby vellus hair, the actual motion of this treatment can help with collagen synthesis and increase the skin’s absorption rate! What’s not to love? Understanding that this treatment is not solely about hair removal but more focused on exfoliation will help you to offer a superior treatment. When performing dermaplaning in one section of the face, I always train that the first three strokes remove hair, the following strokes up to 8 total is an

exfoliating skin treatment. Ensuring we are not working with dull blades will provide a professional dermaplane treatment, not just shaving someone’s face. Offering this service is a low startup cost for new businesses and can be charged at a high ticket. (Make sure to do your market research). There is instant gratification with this treatment which clients love. Makeup glides on more smoothly, and the skin is renewed and glowing. Clients often love it so much that you can create a series, helping with monthly bills and client retention. This service can also be adjusted as an add-on or created as a full 60 min. facial. There are many ways to incorporate this service into your business at a low cost to show high yields. Now, let’s chat about taking it to the next level & adding a peel after dermaplaning! I do not recommend this for a first-time Dermaplane client, even if they have had experience with peels prior. Concurrently, make sure you are trained with the peel line you offer your clients, as no peel is made the same. If you remember how I said the absorption rate increases after the deramplane treatment, keeping that in mind when applying a peel is crucial. Adding a peel to a dermaplane service will help address hyperpigmen-

tation, brighten overall complexion, smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, and allow the peel to penetrate deeper, working on a deeper level. Working with peels that contain growth factors can also assist the skin cells in supporting and repairing damaged skin, and reducing inflammation. The outcome of this treatment is glowing and resultdriven, so keep in mind the skin may peel in a few days. Do not over-moisturize during this time. Avoiding picking or peeling one’s skin will help in beautiful lasting results a few days later, unless using a highgrade medical peel would call for more downtime. Adding a peel to any service such as dermaplaning can also add more revenue to your business. You can set your business’s menu up to be A’ La Cart, peel, dermaplaning, dermaplaning with a peel, and so on. Dermaplaning is not for impaired barrier skin, such as rosacea, a client who has a cold sore/ open wound, sunburn, thin, active acne, any cancer, blood thinners, current use of Accutane, allergy to nickel, or hyper-sensitized skin. This treatment can cause more skin issues then you began with when performed on a client who has a contradictor. Be sure to complete a full intake on your client as you want to offer the best service for each client while keeping their health in mind.
