Pre and post procedure skin care is an often overlooked sector of our market. With the rate of cosmetic surgery and popularity of ablative laser treatments growing, there are many clients who need pre and post procedure care to help strengthen their skin and reduce unwanted complications such as postinflammatory hyperpigmentation and bruising. There are also many plastic surgeons that would benefit from partnering with a knowledgeable and experienced esthetician, like you, to help improve their outcomes. This month’s Guide outlines strategies and guidelines for both pre and post procedure skin care treatments. If you have a client considering undergoing cosmetic surgery, make sure you are part of the discussion when it comes to timing and planning so you and your client

The

POWER of TOUCH The Best Facial Massage Techniques for Your Clients by Carrie Borzillo

Let’s face it - clients come in for better-looking skin. But what keeps them coming back is that blissed-out feeling that comes from a stellar facial massage. Many estheticians say it’s the most important part of a facial. “It is because it’s truly where the magic happens,” says Emily Davis, President of Education at Color Up Wellness Center and owner of Stratum Aesthetics located in Denver, Colorado. Aside from pure relaxation, a facial massage helps depuff skin, detoxify, increase oxygen flow, stimulate collagen production and more. Let’s take a look at five facial massage techniques that should be a part of any esthetician’s toolbox.

skin The Power of Touch

EFFLEURAGE Effleurage is a French word meaning "to touch lightly on" and can be used in most facials. At Color Up Wellness Center, it’s performed in all of their facials, but more specifically incorporated into the Mile High Hemp Infusion Facial (60-minutes, $90). “Proper effleurage technique is an essential step in every facial,” explains Davis. “It employs fluid and long, flowing strokes with the palm of the hands. It can be performed either quickly or slowly. When performed quickly with a medium to firm pressure, it engages the connective tissue to bring hydration and break up sticky tight fascia below the surface which can manifest as fine lines and wrinkles,” explains Davis. This technique helps stimulate circulation, enhance blood flow, and bring vital nutrients to the skin “A slower, more syrupy flow with effleurage is a lovely way to engage the parasympathetic nervous system to calm the mind and ease the nerves. I love to start the beginning of my facial with flowing massage manipulations up the face and pressure on the forehead while leading quick, guided breathwork. It is really simple and elevates the treatment,” she adds.

GUA SHA Gua Sha, sometimes called “coining,” “spooning” or “scraping,” is an ancient Chinese healing technique using gentle short and long strokes to “scrape” the skin with a tool, such as a smooth rose quartz or jade. “We use our rose quartz massage tool to stimulate the circulation of tissue to increase blood flow. This circulation reduces inflammation and brings oxygen to the skin’s surface, encouraging collagen production to sculpt and tone, giving the skin a natural facelift. The rose quartz stones carry heart healing energy, blocking negativity and promoting self-love. These stones, full of positive energy, revitalize the skin,” says esthetician Gina Montanez from 12

Spa Edgewood in Stateline, Nevada. Montanez uses this technique in her 80-minute facials, including the Rejuvenating Oxygen Ritual ($295). “Our signature gemstone trio - rose quartz, clear quartz and amethyst gemstones - is applied to restore and awaken the skin’s own natural ability to heal, regenerate, firm and lift the face. Together with expert application techniques, these therapies result in undeniable lifting and toning,” she says. Her colleagues call her the “facial whisperer,” while clients have said that “her fingers move like a ballerina.” Montanez says “I feel like an artist. I’m painting a Picasso, and everyone is a beautiful work of art”. To learn this technique, Spa Edgewood teamed with Cindy Keske, owner of Rock On Minerals and Design, who specializes in gemstone therapy.

TAPOTEMENT This Swedish massage technique uses an invigorating rhythmic percussion

executed with either the edge of the hand, a cupped hand, or fingertips. It’s broken down into five categories: hacking, tapping, pinching or plucking, slapping and vibration, and can be used for any client except those with redness, swelling, pus, disease, bruises and/or broken scraped skin. ONE Spa and Sea Wellness Spa & Salon in Santa Monica, California uses this technique in many facials, but it’s more prominent in Omorovicza’s Gold Resurfacing facial (60-minutes, $210, 90-minutes, $300), which uses Hungarian moor mud to detoxify, a copper lactic-acid peel to boost collagen, a gold serum to add healing and repairing benefits and a unique plumping massage to help re-surface fine lines and wrinkles. For clients who want firmer skin, this is the method for them. “In conjunction with other techniques, tapotement helps to tone flabby muscles and activate fatty deposits. It also generates tiny muscle contractions by stimulating

skin The Power of Touch the nerve endings. This, in turn, improves muscle tone,” says Rachel Stacy, Director of Spa Operations. “It also has a hyperemic effect by warming up and softening the tissues by increasing local blood circulation. The skin appears flushed and is warm to touch. Clients do not fall asleep during this technique because it is very invigorating,” adds lead esthetician Dijana Marjanovic.

PETRISSAGE Petrissage is derived from the French word petris, which means to mash or knead. This popular technique involves lifting, squeezing and releasing the tissue. “In doing so, metabolic waste is manually drained out of the tissue, like squeezing water out of a sponge,” says Director of Aesthetics Audrey Matney from Beauty Fix Medspa in New York, New York.

The main benefit of petrissage is that it drives fresh oxygen-rich blood into the muscles, which helps to improve muscle tone and increase circulation and cellular nutrition, resulting in healthier skin. Matney says the skin is first cleansed using both petrissage and friction techniques. “Friction is a warming stroke that is used on specific areas that need deeper work, which is why we utilize it during the cleansing process. It helps us evaluate the needs of the patient's skin, while petrissage helps increase blood and lymphatic flow to the area being worked on.” Petrissage is followed by light effleurage with slow flowing and relaxing movements to further eliminate any waste and promote circulation. “The combination of these techniques assist in the elimination of trapped toxins and improve blood flow through stagnant lymph, bringing oxygenation to the skin,” she adds.

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE Vida Organic Wellness in Seal Beach, California incorporates a unique lymphatic drainage technique that was developed using the Brazilian method background in most of their facials, including the Organic Customized Facial (60-minutes, $120), as well as their microdermabrasion, microcurrent, oxygen, and hydro facials. “It activates the dormant lymph nodes located all over our bodies and then manually, sometimes with the assistance of tools, moves unwanted toxins, oil build-up, excess water retention, and inflammation towards these nodes to be filtered out and released from the body. The release process is a very important part, so drinking plenty of fluids and the correct herbal loose leaf teas will help the body to optimally cleanse itself,” says owner and CEO Julia Sackis. Vida has its own version of the technique which incorporates very specific movements in a particular order to work effectively. “With the ultimate goal of moving those unwanted build ups and retention away from healthy cells, it’s a very relaxing form of body work and it works more superficially (above the muscle) targeting the lymphatic fluids,” she adds. This method also helps the body to fight off infections, reduce fatigue, inflammation, swelling, and stress, and even helps with post-workout recovery and post-surgical care. “During the activation process of the lymph nodes, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated sending you into deep relaxation. This will help treat depression, anxiety, stress and has many other mental health benefits."

Signature Treatments In THE Blue Grotto (50 minutes, $100 per person), the world is but a canvas. The 4-room private suite provides a playful and relaxing experience for groups of up to 6 people. Although, the spa typically sees mostly couples and individuals. The guests are provided 4 heated clays and muds with paintbrushes to ignite their inner Picasso. Once swimsuit ready, they paint themselves and each other from head to toe before heading into the adjoining steam room to unwind on a large tiled bench. The clay melts away like butter, drawing harmful toxins away as the muds detoxify, hydrate and firm the skin. Next, the guests wash off with an invigorating hydro-shower that cleanses the spirit. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in the spa’s signature scent are provided, as well as sea salts to exfoliate the body back to a rejuvenated state. This signature treatment requires no licensed service provider, making it the most lucrative service. Spa Director Sharon Schmitz says “ we call this our “gateway” spa service for first-timers weary about having a stranger touch them - women bring their husbands all the time and they don’t want to leave!” The blue grotto is ideal for an anniversary, girls' night out, birthday celebra20

tion or before a massage as it makes the muscles pliable. For a modern meditation experience, guests can find deep relaxation in THE great abyss (25 minutes, $40. 50 minutes, $75). The room is equipped with two SolTec Lounge chairs, created by neurologist Dan Cohen, who describes the technology as “a synchronized magnetic field therapy that stimulates the human energy system, causing greater integration with the physical body, which results in positive physical, emotional, mental and energetic effects.” Guests feel a vibrating sensation in their chair as they listen to layered music that quiets the mind for a deeply relaxing inner body experience. This earthly journey balances the root chakra, responsible for both safety and security. “The music confuses the brain, shutting off the flight or fight response and allowing the client to deeply relax. We amp up the relaxation with a heated mask, a weighted blanket and calming flower essences and aromatherapy” says Schmitz. The treatment allows guests to enter into a place of stillness and inner peace. Many have compared the induced meditation to getting 4 hours of sleep in just 25 minutes. Perfect after a long day of

THE Pearl Modern Spa & Boutique has developed an excellent reputation in its community primarily due to the incredible spa services provided for a superlative client experience. When it comes to marketing, the Spa focuses on retaining their existing clients through monthly service and product promotions. These are promoted using email blasts, the spa’s website and an app that features daily specials and a daily scratch off that reveals prizes. “We have a fantastic social media director who updates our content daily on all of our social media channels, however, we find that a direct approach works best with our core demographic,” says Schmitz. The day spa also encourages clients to revisit through their annual memberships. There are three different levels of the pearl life membership. Each include discounts on treatments and products, as well as reward points, special event promotions and other perks. In addition to these incentives, THE Pearl also attributes much of its success to its 1,200 square foot event space where the spa hosts educational events and rents the room for client celebrations. Spa Director Schmitz says “these events introduce hundreds of new clients to our spa every month!” Guests also have the option to reserve the spa to themselves on the Sunday of their choice for a private spa party.

Training At THE Pearl, “education to guarantee results” is one of the team’s core values. Every new employee receives a three-day orientation before they start with their department training. As for treatment education, the spa takes on a “see it, feel it, do it” approach. The trainees will first learn about the theory, ingredients, and protocol of treatment. Then they will watch a live service before receiving it to “feel it” for themselves. After they have had enough practice, they will perform the

New staff members have performance evaluations after 90 days, 6 months and then annually. Employees are recognized and awarded daily through various systems. Social Media Strategy Scheduling Posts by Samantha Garcia

While a strong reputation and word of mouth are invaluable in the world of esthetics, achieving it is the hard part. This is especially true if you don’t have a platform to showcase your talent and skills. Fortunately, we have social media to thank to help get clients through the door. Many spa-goers and beauty lovers, look to social media for local recommendations. It’s the best way to attract new customers and reinforce the client experience to get your clients to revisit. Nonetheless, building a strong social media presence takes work. It requires motivation and consistency, the ability to vary your content and stay active while setting yourself apart from the competition. Now, adding social media extraordinaire to your line of work may seem like a lot. This is why developing an organizational strategy is integral to your online success. Learn what social media scheduling can do, and you’ll consider it your best new tool!

business Social Media Strategy

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA SCHEDULING? With 101 tasks on your list of to-dos, keeping up with your social media networks may be the last thing on your mind. It’s easy to get wrapped up in responsibilities when you’re running a spa business and maintaining your personal life. Unfortunately, the technological world doesn’t stop for you. Before you know it, your social media feed is complete radio silence and your clients are wondering “Where did she go?”, while potential clients never even knew you existed. Social media scheduling helps you avoid just that. You can schedule your posts on a calendar to be posted at a particular date or time on your specified social media account.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT CALENDAR Social media can be a huge distraction from your work, and multitasking the two will just result in a subpar job on both ends. If your social media showcases you as the best lash artist in your area, then you better live up to it! In the same sense, your social media should reflect just what a boss beauty queen you are if you are killing the game. Organizing your social media posts into a calendar allows you to plan and gather your content ahead of time so that you can focus less on your phone and more on your clients in the treatment room. Set aside a day every month to come up with creative content ideas! Not only will this cut a ton of time off of your hands, but allow you to be more ambitious with your posts so that you can put your best face forward. This way, you don’t ever have to scramble for a generic inspirational quote to post in desperation ever again. You can spruce up your page with fun giveaways and look for influencer partners to help boost your following. With a social calendar, you’ll never forget about the glamorous GRAMMY Awards again or any National Holiday 30

April2020

LNEonline.com

that aligns with your beauty biz for that matter. You can come up with creative ideas for World Health Day (clean skincare products), National Selfie Day (after-glow facial looks) or National Don’t Fry Day (SPF products). Yes, these are real Holidays estys! In the world of social media, at least. You will be able to post more consistently which will help keep your online presence alive for all potential clients to see.

SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR TEMPLATES AND TOOLS There are several ways you can make a social media calendar. You can create a simple calendar with any word processing software by creating a table, inserting social media images and using color coding to signify which social network you wish to post to. There are also plenty of free templates that you can find online if you want to simplify the process. There are even social media scheduling sites and apps like HootSuite, Trello, Planoly and Content Cal that give you a visual overview of all of your assets (copy, visual and links) in one place. These tools allow you to post directly from your calendar or better yet, schedule your posts to be automatically published for you!

TIPS FOR CREATING YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CALENDAR No matter what template or tool you decide to use, there are a few tips that you will need to know to create an effective social media calendar. For example, deciding on what network best

suits your beauty business. Will you be using Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or a combination of these platforms? This may depend on the type of audience you are trying to reach. If you want to get in touch with the younger crowd, Instagram may be more suited for you. On the other hand, Facebook is great to help you boost your search engine rankings. Next, you will need to establish what you want your calendar to track. You can include the platform, image, a captivating caption with emojis, date and time of a post. The more specific you are, the better. Now, the hard partdeciding what to post. Some estys have no idea what to share so they share very little. Other estys make the mistake of sharing everything, from their morning breakfast to their daughter’s dance recital and everything else in between. While it’s great to share your personal life on social media, you want to remember the purpose of your page. If you’re a boss entrepreneur and a mommy, there’s no shame in showing others how you manage to juggle the two. It’s inspiring! Just make sure that everything you post ties back to the purpose of your page. This could be to attract new clients by being an educational resource on all things skincare. Or perhaps you joined the social world to connect with other estheticians and establish yourself as an expert in your field. Whatever your why is, meaning why you created your Instagram page to begin with, just make sure your feed is unique to you and

“If you’re looking for that inspirational spark to boost your success, this is it! Every year I am inspired by all of the industry pioneers that come and speak at the tradeshows, but there’s also something so incredibly motivating being surrounded by fellow estheticians like myself who are eager to grow their business! Don’t be afraid to start a conversation with other estheticians.

They may share advice and tips that are useful to your business!

“Bring business cards! This is a time for you to make valuable connections with industry leaders. You never know who you might cross paths

with and who can help take your business to the next level.

“Organize your schedule! There’s typically an app or program that you can follow to help you map out your classes. Make sure to allot some time on the tradeshow floor. It’s easy to

get carried away while exploring all of the products.

“There’s a big difference in telling people how our products work through an email blast or phone call and being able to show them through demonstrations

and training from our brand educators. We love drawing spa professionals and estheticians in with our facial demos and seeing their reactions to our products.

“Putting a face to our clients is the reason why we do tradeshows. It allows us to answer any questions estheticians may have about our products. We also take this as an opportunity to gather feedback

so that we can continue to make our products better.

“Attending tradeshows is a great way for us to stay ahead of our competition. We can see what our competition might be launching or focusing on in the months to come. This type of market research also exposes us to new

The popularity of facial cosmetic surgery and laser procedures is always increasing. From medical grade laser resurfacing, to eye lifts, neck lifts and even full facelifts, our clients are often curious about these procedures and it’s not uncommon for them to consult with a plastic surgeon. As their esthetician and guardian of their skin health, the responsibility of prepping their skin for surgery and overseeing their recovery can often fall in our hands, even if you don’t have a direct relationship with the physician or surgeon doing the procedure. In fact, many doctors’ offices do not have a pre and post treatment skin care protocol in place. Although this may come as a surprise, it should also be seen as an opportunity to reach a new market segment of clients who are preparing for or healing from cosmetics procedures.

SkinCare Prepping the skin by Aurora Solis

Pre & Post Op Skincare Guide

Pre-Procedure Care The main objective for pre-procedure skin care is to strengthen the skin to allow for the best outcome, safest procedure, and minimal inflammatory response post-surgery with faster healing times. Whether your client is having total facial reconstruction or spot treatment with medical grade lasers, the outcome will surely be improved with a proper pre-treatment skin care plan that involves in-office treatment as well as customized home care regimens. Follow these guidelines to ensure your clients receive optimal results. Hey, they may even put in a good word for you with their surgeon and help you establish a lucrative referral relationship!

Ingredients for Pre-Procedure With the goal being to speed healing and minimize infection, scarring, and hyperpigmentation, you should establish a pre-procedure treatment plan as soon as you know your client is seeking consultations for a procedure. For at least two weeks prior to surgery, recommend products that have been shown to speed wound healing by increasing keratinization and/or collagen production. Ingredients that help strengthen the skin and should be used prior to wounding include retinoids such as tretinoin and retinol. Studies have shown that pretreatment with tretinoin helps speed up wound healing, meaning that your client will have less inflammation and scarring post-surgery, ultimately resulting in a better outcome for your client and the surgeon. Dr. Kligman and associates evaluated healing after punch biopsy and found that wounds on arms pretreated with tretinoin cream 0.05 percent to 0.1 percent were significantly smaller – by 35 percent to 37 percent – on days one and four, and were 47 percent to 50 percent smaller on days six, eight, and 11, compared with the untreated arms. Most studies suggest a two to four week tretinoin pretreatment regimen 42

April2020

because peak epidermal hypertrophy occurs after seven days of tretinoin application and normalizes after 14 days of continued treatment. This approach allows the skin to recover from any retinoid dermatitis prior to surgery. You may also choose to recommend over-the-counter adapalene to your clients, which does not require a prescription from a doctor. Adapalene should be started five to six weeks prior to procedures because it has a longer half-life and requires an earlier initiation period than tretinoin. Pre-treating with topical vitamin C and hydroxyacids may also help speed wound healing by increasing collagen production. Although studies have not been conducted in this area, it is a good idea to perform routine chemical exfoliation and antioxidant treatments on your client in the weeks leading up to their procedure. However, it is not recommend to perform deep peels that will induce their own inflammatory and healing response, as this will weaken the skin prior to surgery, as

well as potential expose the client to infection unnecessarily.

Ingredients to Avoid Pre-Procedure Avoid using any ingredients that might promote skin tumor growth. Although no conclusive studies have evaluated the effects of growth factors in promoting skin cancer, it is best to take caution and eliminate their use prior to an invasive procedure. To prevent bruising, encourage your client to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, St. John’s Wort, vitamin E, omagea-3 fatty acids, flax oil, giseng, salmon and alcohol prior to their procedure. Most physicians agree that these should be avoided for 10 days prior to the procedure. Smoking should be avoided 4 weeks prior to the procedure.

Preventing PostInflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) Post-inflammatory pigmentation (PIH) is a risk with procedures such as ablative

LNEonline.com

April2020

43

Pre & Post Op Skincare Guide skin resurfacing. To help reduce the risk of PIH, your clients need to avoid unprotected sun exposure for up to two months before an ablative procedure. This is non-negotiable! Laser clinics routinely schedule promotions for laser resurfacing in the fall and winter, noting fewer problems with hyperpigmentation when skin is less likely to be exposed to major doses of UV radiation both before and after the procedure. The risk for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is higher in clients with a higher Fitzpatrick level. In fact, many doctors are reluctant to use ablative lasers on skin types four and above. If your client experiences dark spots after laser treatments, the doctor may recommend you perform a series of light chemical peels to help lighten the unwanted pigmentation. It is also recommended to start your clients on homecare containing melanin-suppressing ingredients such as Kojic Acid and Arbutin as a pre-pro-

cedure treatment strategy to help prevent PIH. Topical lightening products prior to treatment are especially recommended for clients with darker skin types. A six-week pretreatment course that includes twice-daily application of a hydroquinone, tretinoin and glycolic acid preparation can greatly reduce hyperpigmentation of dark skin after a procedure. If you don’t have as long of a pre-treatment period, use 4 percent hydroquinone.

Sun Exposure The most important factors in minimizing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after laser or other treatments are ensuring that skin has not received recent sun exposure. Application of SPF, preferably a physical (mineral) sunblock, and strict avoidance of sun exposure after treatment is also neccesary until all post-treatment erythema has resolved. Application of

You should establish a pre-procedure treatment plan as soon as you know your client is seeking consultations for a procedure skin lightening products such as antioxidants, retinoic acid, non-hydroquinone faders such as Kojic Acid or Arbutin at the earliest sign of PIH and use of a topical anti-inflammatory (hydrocortisone) to diminish skin erythema that extends beyond the first post-treatment week is also essential.

SkinCare Caring for clients after invasive procedures by Aurora Solis

After cosmetic surgery or laser treatment, there are a range of conditions in which you might find your client. From completely swollen and bruised, to minor inflammation and scarring, it is important to know how to help your client along their healing journey to help them feel their best and see the full results of their investment in cosmetic procedures.

While the physician overseeing your client’s recovery will likely maintain close contact and sometimes daily in-office check ups to track your clients progress, you can still play an essential role in your client’s recovery as their esthetician. Often, the surgeon or physician is checking to see how your client is healing from a medical perspective. But, there are many treatments you can offer to help reduce inflammation, speed healing and help your client feel relaxed during the often difficult and uncomfortable healing process. Here are some treatments that will help reduce inflammation and promote healing for your clients after cosmetic surgery or invasive procedures:

LED LIGHT THERAPY It’s no secret that LED Light Therapy has amazing wound healing potential. This treatment reduces bruising, which is a major concern for clients who have recently undergone cosmetic surgery, such as facelifts and eye lifts.

It also helps accelerate the rate of wound closure, which can mean faster healing and reduced scarring. This is great news for clients who are concerned about visible scars anywhere on the body post-surgery. LED Light Therapy works by using light energy to improve cellular health by accelerating the repair and replenishment of compromised tissue cells. According to Celluma Light Therapy, “In the same way that plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into plant tissue, high intensity light emitting diodes (LEDs) utilizing specific, proven wavelengths of light can trigger a natural biostimulatory effect in human tissue. Research has shown that phototherapy can increase circulation, accelerate tissue repair, kill acne bacteria, decrease inflammation, improve skin tone, texture and clarity, as well as ease muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasm, and arthritis. Research indicates that cells absorb particles of light (photons) and

You can still play an essential role in your client’s recovery as their esthetician. transform their energy into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the form of energy that cells utilize. The resulting elevation of ATP is then used to power metabolic processes; synthesize DNA, RNA, proteins, enzymes, and other products needed to repair or regenerate cell components; foster mitosis or cell proliferation; and restore homeostasis. Simply put, the LED light source provides compromised cells with added energy so the cells performance is enhanced. For example, fibroblast cells will increase collagen and elastic production in connective tissue.”

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE Manual lymphatic drainage massage is a great, gentle method of reducing inflammation and getting rid of excess fluid and cellular waste that can accumulate after cosmetic surgery. Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a technique used to provide relief from edema, an accumulation of fluids in the tissues that causes swelling. It is a gentle massage that stimulates the immune system and improves the appearance of the skin. LDM is used after surgery, to help reduce edema/ swelling and speed up healing. During LDM, muscles relax, heart and breathe rate decrease, and clients move into a state of relaxation that promotes healing and balance. Scar tissue becomes smaller, smoother, more flexible and stronger. According to esthetician Marta Rey, an expert in pre and post-op skin care, “Plastic surgery patients experience post operative bruising, tightness and swelling of skin tissues. These skin reactions are a natural result of trauma that the skin experiences during surgery.” Marta helps drain away the excess fluids and waste products which surround the cells, aiding in the distribution of nourishing elements to the skin, and preventing the lymph from stagnating and producing swelling of the tissues. Think of it as a holistic therapy "tune up" designed to invigorate your lymphatic system. More than one treatment is required for best results. As with any cosmetic surgery, there is a potential risk of side effects such as poor scarring, bruises, and swelling. To minimize these negative results, Marta Rey offers Lymphatic Drainage Massage Therapy to assist her clients recovering from cosmetic surgery. The benefits of this therapy are sure to enable clients to make a smoother transition to a full recovery. The benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage post-procedure include:

ONCOLOGY ESTHETICS Caring for clients in special circumstances by Lydia Sarfati

As of January 2019, it is estimated that there are 16.9 million cancer survivors in the United States. This represents 5.0% of the population. In 2019 alone, 1.7 million new cancer cases were diagnosed in the United States. It’s a sad truth that the likelihood of an esthetican encountering a client that either has a history of cancer treatment, is in the process of undergoing treatment or is recovering from treatment is high. Oncology esthetics is a form of esthetic treatment that is meant to complement medical oncology treatment, addressing unique skin concerns that can arise from treatment while also offering important integrative therapy to help alleviate stress and anxiety associated with combatting cancer.

organic & wellness Oncology Esthetics

Certification in Oncology Esthetics has become more and more available throughout the United States, through organizations such as Oncology Training International. Becoming certified in oncology esthetics and incorporating it into a practice can be an enormously rewarding and enriching experience for the esthetician, knowing that they are addressing a demographic that can derive truly life-changing benefits from their services. Here is an overview of what oncology esthetics entails, as well as ingredients and information an esthetician will need to incorporate into their practice to become a certified practitioner.

What is Oncology Esthetics? Oncology esthetics is a practice that involves post-graduate education to learn how to perform facial and body treatments that are safe for a client that is undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment. This includes selecting the right ingredients that will not be contraindicative to any of the medications or treatments, as well as understanding the various forms of cancer treatment and side effects and how they can be alleviated through esthetic services. Oncology esthetics complements medical oncology by implementing integrative therapies such as massage and aromatherapy, as well as cosmetic and skin care services to provide physical and psychological benefits. This is an intensive area of study because each client has unique circumstances. Individualized cancer treatments can cause heightened sensitivity or prosthesis. Estheticians trained in oncology esthetics need to have intensive training in medical oncology treatments and the possible side effects in order to properly and safely provide services to an oncology patient. It also requires a high level of empathy and sensitivity. The benefit of esthetic treatments for oncology patients is quantifiable. 62

April2020

LNEonline.com

According to one of the study’s coauthors, Angela Noviello, Director of the Esthetic Division of Milano Estetica Cosmetic Surgery & Medical Spa, as well as Italian Director and European Coordinator for OTI Oncology Esthetics, oncology esthetics can have a multitude of benefits, including: • Promoting relaxation • Promoting blood circulation • Promoting hydration • Stimulating or relaxing the nervous system • Promoting enhanced breathing • Promoting sleep • Pain reduction • Reducing side effects of treatment such as nausea and loss of appetite • Improving the quality of the skin • Reducing anxiety and depression • Promoting socialization

Types of Cancer Treatment and Their Side Effects The first area of education involves understanding the various forms of cancer treatments. Treatment can be local, meaning it is directed at a specific part

of the body and is often used when cancer is only present in that area. Radiation therapy and surgery are both local treatments. Systemic treatment travels through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells throughout the body. Many chemotherapy drugs are systemic treatments that are absorbed by the body’s cells and tissues. Targeted therapy uses drugs to target specific molecules (such as proteins) on or inside cancer cells. By targeting these molecules, the drugs stop the growth and spread of cancer cells and limit harm to healthy cells. Side effects of these treatments can include pain, swelling, scars from surgical procedures, skin discoloration, radiation dermatitis, erythema or reddening of the area, edema, partial loss of epidermal basal cells which can cause dryness, itching, scaling, flaking and peeling, dark circles, hyperpigmentation, crusting, blistering, fatigue, and hair loss.

Do No Harm As with all services, the most important maxim is to do no harm to the client.

organic & wellness Oncology Esthetics

When it comes to oncology patients, this is even more imperative since their bodies and immune systems have been severely compromised through treatment. Oncology esthetics training will not only review the kinds of treatment an oncology patient may be undergoing, but also cover important aspects of altering spa services to suit this client, and are covered in depth in text books such as Oncology Esthetics, Morag Currin, (Oncology Training International, 2020.) With this, estheticians will: • Learn how and when to modify spa services during all phases – before, during and after cancer treatment. • Learn what ingredients to avoid, such as perfumes, parabens, silicones, DEA, TEA, Oxybenzone, glycols, alcohol, sulphates and triclosan. • Acquaint themselves with oncology specialists who will provide insights about beneficial services, as well as methods and services that are prohibited. • Learn how to properly approach the client, including modifying voice and demeanor to create a gentle, calm and soothing atmosphere. • Always pay attention to the client's comfort. • Learn about proper sanitation, including use of antimicrobial products registered with the EPA as sterilizers. • Understand how a spa and salon needs to be modified for proper sterilization, including proper cleaning of the front desk area, shelves, waiting room chairs, facial bed, trolley, chair counter tops, bathrooms (sink, toilette), towel dispenser, soap dispenser. • Make sure all areas are well ventilated.

• Utilize disposable implements and utensils such as sheets, spatulas, headbands, brushes and towels to avoid cross contamination. • Wear personal protective gear such as medical grade nitrile gloves, goggles, face masks and a lab coat, whilelearning proper removal of gloves and changing gloves upon completion of any procedure.

• Having a a wig stand for those who need it. • Be prepared to stop. Clients and survivors of cancer may feel disconnected from their bodies.

What is Beauty Consciousness? It is a different way of looking at beauty. There are different levels of beauty consciousness based on personal experiences and beliefs. When living with a lower level of this consciousness one may experience vanity, selfobsession, self-loathing or superficiality (to name a few). The highest level of beauty consciousness is the embodiment of self-acceptance, authenticity and love of self and all others: true beauty.

Lower Levels of Beauty Consciousness My first understanding of what beauty was developed when I liked a boy in the 3rd grade who teased me for some of my physical features. That experience imprinted in me a belief that there was something wrong with me, that I had undesirable features that made me unlikable. I was programmed to believe that there was a direct correlation between my appearance and my likability and worth. This experience then evolved into how I saw and treated others based on their physicality. These early experiences transformed into a habit of constantly comparing myself to others, especially the perfect women I saw in magazines and on tv. I would match up body parts with my sisters and friends in the mirror to scrutinize and criticize our differences or “flaws” which led to unhealthy eating patterns and body dysmorphia. Experiences I shared with many. As I moved into high school, I learned that being different was a death sentence and beauty equals power. My experience with beauty during this time was based on the “positive” attention I received from boys. This recognition of being desirable was addictive, and it developed into my identity and my foundation in relationships. Being beautiful was my validity in the world and I used whatever tools (makeup, fashion) and techniques (sex) I learned from my peers and media to portray an illusion of beauty. This false sense of self-manifested into toxic and superficial relationships (especially with myself), self-destructive behaviors and feeling lost and conflicted in my career and purpose. I lived at this low level of beauty consciousness well into adulthood. This developed into a fear of aging which I equated to losing my identity and desirability. It became clear over the course of my work in the beauty industry that I was not alone with these fears and illusions. Most of my friends, family, cli70

ents and colleagues were also never fully accepting of themselves or others. Always judging, always comparing and never able to accept a compliment. No matter how much we invested in our appearance, we would never be good enough. This epiphany led me to seek understanding for the reason why, like myself, so many people were unable to accept themselves. I was led to a book called The Gene Keys, an encyclopedia of human genetics. Author Richard Rudd defines beauty as the highest expression of a human gene which is only achieved by transcending through the lower frequency of the same gene. This “shadow level” of beauty put to words my experience and my realization of others’ experiences with self reflection; defining it as “keeping the entire planet living at a low level of frequency - it is like a blanket thrown across our civilization. That is our chief problem. Human beings do not generally accept themselves, and when you convert entropy into human feeling it becomes a kind of deep numbness or sense of gloom.” This low level of frequency was how I had been living and was the discontent I saw and felt all around me.

Understanding and owning my state of low-leveled beauty consciousness was my first step towards transcendence. I realized that the choices I made (shopping, treatments, relationships, diet, exercise, home) while operating at this state of mind were made from my shadow. My decisions were based on fear and a desire to be something and someone other than my authentic self. If I continued on this path, I would never be happy, no matter how “beautiful” I may have appeared.

Upleveling Once I accepted and embraced this understanding, I started to dive deeply into self-discovery teachings. I read, meditated, and spent countless hours in invaluable workshops and journaling. I invested in Reiki, Human Design readings and other healing services. I learned about my gifts, my true nature and my true desires. I found new role models who were physically beautiful, self-accepting, full of love and light and embodied authenticity. My Highest Self began to take form in my mind. What she looked like, acted like and felt like. From doing this work, I upleveled to a higher frequency of beauty consciousness.

Practicing this level of thinking is just that, a practice, but the more I see myself and others as intricate, authentic beings, the more joy and fulfillment I get out of my work and my own self expression. Comparing and judging has dissipated into a desire to see myself and others in a new light, with admiration and inspiration. When operating from level of consciousness, I make decisions based on whether it is in alignment with my authenticity and my Higher Self. If it is, then I am happy and truly accepting of my choice. The sky's the limit when it comes to self-expressive choices. As long as the choice is in alignment with your authenticity and comes from a positive place rather than from fear, competition, etc., you are vibrating at this high frequency of beauty consciousness and you will transcend to exquisiteness. Exquisiteness is the divine essence that shines through an individual. “In this superlative state of bliss, you fall in love with your own pristine manifestation because it is through this uniqueness that the divine currents can be accessed. Exquisiteness hints at a beauty that is beyond all words. You shine like a diamond in the heart of creation and wherever you look, you see other diamonds in various states of clarity, each one unique and each one exquisite and incomparable.” - Richard Rudd This is the level of Beauty Consciousness that I wish upon all of humanity and the essence of my work; not only with my clients but within myself. It is at this level, that we can make beauty fun again - using it as an expres72

sion and an outlet for self love. I now feel a deep sense of purpose and responsibility in my work as an esthetician and reiki practitioner because I am able to see my clients in a way they might not have been able to see themselves. Imagine what could happen if we altered the trajectory of the human selfdiscovery experience through the awakening and transcendence of beauty consciousness. What could we create and become if we are not held back by limiting beliefs? There is perhaps no greater time than now, especially for our youth, to embrace and embody our full exquisiteness and if this article has resonated with you, you are well on your way.
