Ingredient Spotlight Sea Buckthorn Oil Why It’s Worth the Hype by Astrid Makenzi Miller

skin Ingredient Spotlight

Sea Buckthorn Oil, chances are you’ve heard of this somewhat “cult favorite” ingredient that enriches our serums and cleansers and anoints the skin in rich orange goodness. So here are some of the reasons why this amazing oil from the Sea Buckthorn Berry Shrub is incredible for the skin!

What is Sea Buckthorn? The Sea Buckthorn (Hippophaes rhamnoides) Berry Shrub, which is native to Asia and Europe, is also known as sallowthorn, sandthorn, or seaberry. It naturally contains 14 vitamins (beautiful vitamin C and A included!) that contribute to overall skin and body health. The berries are cold-pressed and added to wonderful mixtures to help the skin with a variety of issues, including acne and skin showing signs of aging. It’s also a free radical scavenger, so it finds “broken cells” and helps repair them while also helping aid fine lines, wrinkles, and soothing dry skin. This makes this oil so versatile when it comes to working with all different types of skin and skin conditions.

What does it contain? Sea Buckthorn oil additionally contains 190+ different bioactive compounds that all work together to soothe and repair the skin. Sea Buckthorn Fruit Oil contains omega 6 and the highly

sought-after Omega 7, incredible for aiding in overall skin repair, making this oil ideal for problem skin. One of the most helpful compounds in Sea Buckthorn oil when it comes to the skin is linoleic acid, derived from Omega-6, which has been studied and shown to play a role in reversing the signs of aging. “Omega-6 might reverse this process by accelerating the production of lipids in lamellar granules, strengthening the lipid barrier of the epidermis, protecting the skin against epidermal loss of water, and normalizing the metabolism of the skin.” [1] You might be asking yourself at this point, “is there anything this oil can’t do?”... and frankly, we don’t think there is! Not only does it keep the skin strong while also improving various skin conditions, but it also keeps the epidermis hydrated. “Fatty acids contained in these oils create an occlusive film on the skin which reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL).” [2]

ous products that contain this oil to see how your skin reacts! “Scientific reports confirm the content of almost 200 ingredients which ensure that the oil has a multidirectional effect. Therefore, seabuckthorn and its oil may be considered to be one of the most valuable natural products in the world.” [3] Remember: if your client has sensitive or reactive skin, it is always best to play it safe by patch-testing any new products right below the ear on the neck to make sure the your skin doesn’t have a negative reaction. Now off you go… we think everyone needs this in their regimen!

Where can you find it? Sea Buckthorn is most commonly added as a star ingredient to cleansers of all types, serums, and facial oils. If you are in a place with your skin where you want to try something new, feel like your skin is missing the support it needs, or you just simply want the benefits of this incredible super-oil, then look into vari-

skin The Skin's Microbiome

The skin’s microbiome is a carefully balanced ecosystem of bacteria, viruses, pH levels, and other symbiotic microorganisms. This helps keep the body protected, educated, and youthful. The microbiome of the skin is something that was normally left to the scientist to discuss and postulate about. However, now with more advanced technology and DNA information we are able to learn more about the 1.8 million delicate ecosystems that exist on a single human body. The idea that we have millions upon millions of bacteria, viruses, fungi and yes even mites is enough to make anyone want to vigorously wash their face and place it under a blue, bacteria killing light. But we need all those miniscule creepy crawlies to stay in good health. In utero the skin is sterile, and it is not until birth that we are exposed to bacteria and fully develop our microbiome. Once this version of our microbiome is established it only begins to flourish and change throughout our lives as it serves within the barrier function. The skin is our first line of defense from any invading pathogens. Just as well the microbiota of the skin will be influenced by many things such as DNA, sex, environment, diet, bodily location and product usage. In shorthand, if your skin’s microbiome is weakened most likely so is the barrier function and therefore open for mitochondria invasion. The first layer of the microbiome resides on top of the “brick and mortar” stratum corneum. Here is where it begins to teach young T-cells what immunity should look like as well as fight off anything that is not part of that regional ecosystem. The most common bacterium on the body is staphylococcus and corynebacterium. This is on account that sweat glands cover the entire body and create the moist environment these pathogens thrive in. Even though the skin is typically cool and acidic, the distinct habitats are created by skin folds, thickness,

and the density of hair follicle, sweat and sebum glands. So how does one protect the delicate flora and fauna of our body’s first line of defense? Protecting the Skin’s Microbiome Being mindful of the cleansers is this first step in keeping the skin healthy. Staying away from cleansers that use harsh surfactants to strip away not only dirt but protective oils as well. These ingredients are typically alcohols, sulfates, and fragrances. These can disrupt the barrier function and weaken it by causing dryness and inflammation. Cream cleansers are much gentler on the skin and can help keep the moisture balance intact. Calming moisturizers, antioxidants, and sunscreen are also important in protecting the skin’s barrier function. Disruption of the microbiome is typically the first indication of dermatologic difficulties causing inflammation, aging, acne, eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis. Studies are showing that “feeding” the skin prebiotics are useful in cultivating the useful microbiota: the idea that the skin microbiome can be fed and maintained like microbiomes found elsewhere such as the stomach and intestines. Microbiome research is only going to continue to grow as it is recognized as a big part of health and disease diagnosis. Being able to manipulate the skin's microbiome as well as understand what impacts it will provide us with many more products and methods to treat skin problems!

The Remède Spa AT THE ST. REGIS DEER VALLEY IN PARK CITY, UTAH A new Spa Director’s enlightened approach to treatments

spa Spa Of The Month Breathtakingly beautiful, calm, and customized to meet the needs of every guest, the Remède Spa at The St. Regis Deer Valleyis one of the world’s most luxurious mountain resorts. Fortunately, the spa has been able to maintain a strong level of business throughout the past year. The New Spa Director Benjamin Donat attributes much of this success to the reduced amount of social contact in spa offerings and eschewing profits to take the ultimate approach in safety and cleanliness precautions. In addition to these changes, Donat has reworked the retail component of the Spa to emphasize luxury products and has attracted many residents by offering specials and promotions that appeal to local Utahans. Separate from these initiatives, the Spa stands as a stunning 4,000 square foot space that provides top-notch services and remarkable experiences for its guests.

A Look Inside The two-level spa provides an intimate, serene sanctuary with pampering services and breathtaking mountain surroundings. The Spa was inspired by the spectacular views of the Wasatch Mountains. The Spa features a grand spiral staircase that ascends to eleven elegant treatment rooms, including two private companion suites that open to a spacious patio with a cascading waterfall.

world’s renowned methods to deliver treatments with remarkable results. Treatments include Deep Tissue, Swedish, Reflexology, Hot Poultice, and Prenatal.

Safety Precautions In addition to following CDC and WHO protocols, St. Regis Deer Valley raises its standards to a higher level of safety by being Sharecare Health Security VERIFIED™ with Forbes Travel Guide. “This comprehensive verification covers more than 360 standards across health and hygiene protocols, cleaning products and procedures, ventilation, physical distancing, the guest experience, and health safety communication with guests and employees,” says Donat. There are many measures put into place to ensure that guests are safe. The Spa has reduced the amount of social contact by requiring that treatments be booked in advance and has built-in additional time after each treatment so that staff can perform a thorough cleaning and sanitizing procedures. Upon arrival at the Spa, every guest is given a locker that contains a sanitized robe, towel, and bathmat, as well as single-serve snacks handled by a gloved and masked staff member. “In non-pandemic times, we would keep the cleaning out of sight of our guest. However, it is important for our guests to see that cleaning is being done all the time, which instills confidence in our clients- they know that all surfaces are clean and sanitized. Extensive cleaning takes place in the Spa throughout the day,” says Donat.

Signature Treatment The Remède Spa’s most popular treatment is the Hot Poultice Massage (80 min, $330). “The masseuse gently and strategically applies the poultice to the client. The Hot Poultice Massage combines herbs wrapped in a cloth with an oil customized per client. The cloth and oil are then steamed and used in the massage to relieve fatigued and tense muscles. The heat of the poultice relieves soreness and rebalances and relaxes the body,” says Donat. Other soughtafter treatments include many of the Couple Massages, Biologique Recherche Facials, and Customized Massages. The Spa’s therapists are expertly versed in each of the

Marketing Spa Director Benjamin Domat believes that The St. Regis Deer Valley enjoys a strong level of repeat guests due to its state-ofthe-art facilities, including the Remède Spa and its unmatched service. “Once a guest from the hotel or The St. Regis Deer Valley Residences or a local member of the community experiences a treatment, much of our business is word-of-mouth,” explains Donat. The Relaxation Room Everything you need for a calming sanctuary

spa The Relaxation Room

A trip to the spa is much more than a treatment. While it is most definitely the highlight of any guests' visit, many spa-goers are looking for a place to escape, relax, and recharge for a few hours or more. This is why creating an environment where guests can retreat after their treatment is essential. So what exactly makes a Relaxation Room? Here is everything you need for a perfect relaxation room.

What is a Relaxation Room? A Relaxation Room is not to be confused with a waiting room where guests might be feeling eager and expectant, perhaps a little stressed out before their treatments. Have you ever received a treatment and were sad that it was over? A Relaxation Room is a posttreatment room where guests can relax after being in an induced relaxed state.

The Location If there is enough space, a relaxation room should be located in the spa's quiet areas and away from areas prone to noise, like the bathroom, gym, or reception area. It should not be a throughway for therapists or guests. It should be a separate room that is soundproof and has a door that closes silently. If there is not enough space in your spa for a relaxation room, creating a quiet space in an area secluded with signs promoting silence to show others' consideration should work.

The Design A relaxation room is a clean and calming space designed to imbue a sense of peace and tranquility for guests. Much attention should be paid to this serene environment's design, from the calming colors and comfortable furniture to every fine detail, such as the scents and sounds that create the ambiance. Let's take a closer look at what makes a perfect relaxation room. • Calm and soothing colors give guests an uplifting feeling of warmth and vitality. These include neutral greens, beiges, blues, and different shades of white with a tinge of these colors. • Cozy furniture that is kept to simple, minimalistic colors. Comfortable lounge chairs with warm blankets and overstuffed armchairs for those who enjoy reading. A small table beside the lounger where guests can place their cup of tea and books they wish to read.

• Flowers or a small zen garden that is soothing both visually and aromatically. • A fireplace or candles lit around the room to further the ambiance and keep the room fragrant. Soothing scents include lavender and vanilla, unlike citrus scents which can be invigorating and have the opposite effect. • Individual headphones that allow guests to listen to relaxing and meditative music or soft sleep-inducing music playing in the room. Pleasant sounds include flowing water, rain, ocean waves, or even white noise to bring an air of peace to the room. • A spa menu available or the latest issues of health, wellness, and spa magazines. • Beautiful art of peaceful outdoor settings to invite the outside in. This space must remain neat and fresh for all guests. Attendants should check the room frequently to restock towels and blankets and clean up any left teacups or water cups. The room should be simple and uncluttered to avoid creating a sense of tension for guests. Guests should feel comforted and in a harmonious and peaceful space that forces them to stop, relax, and recharge before heading back to their busy lives.

• A clear and simplistic layout of furniture to make the space easily accessible for guests.

business Pricing Strategy

Pricing Strategy How to confidently raise prices on services by MaryJo Reeves

28

June2021

LNEonline.com

business Pricing Strategy

There comes a time with any successful business when the unavoidable must occur: raising prices on services. This may seem like a formidable task, but it doesn’t need to be. Raising prices can boost the perceived quality of the service. When increasing prices, the biggest concern may be losing clients. However, the clients who shirk at paying more don’t usually see the value of the service or the practitioner's worth. Client attrition is a part of any business and is inevitable with or without price increases. The price increase is ultimately up to each business owner, but the general rule is between 7% and 10%. Some owners raise prices on their most popular services and leave the less popular services alone. Think of the Pareto Principle of 80/20. Eighty percent of your business may come from twenty percent of your services. Only 20 percent of your business may come from 80 percent of your services. Focus on those treatments that increase your revenue. Some practitioners choose to raise prices in January, as people view it as a new beginning. However, any time of the year is appropriate to implement a price increase. The more important topic is how much notice you give your clients. Typically, six to eight weeks is plenty of time. There is no need to make a big deal out of raising prices. A simple framed note at the front desk may be enough to let your clients know about increased prices. Some practitioners also let their current customers know about an impending price increase. They can choose to pre-purchase services at the current pricing before the increase goes into effect. This is a very nice way to increase client loyalty. It’s essential to be confident about raising prices. Know your worth and what you offer. Your clients value your

business primarily because of the nontangibles you offer. Your establishment's atmosphere, getting to relax and take a break from daily rigors of life, the feeling of being pampered and special are reasons why your customers will not balk at paying a bit more.

Clients who would happily pay higher rates already recognize the value offered. Realize your worth and charge accordingly. Think of all the education, experience, time, and energy you put into your craft.

There are many variables to consider when running a business, and price increases are a fact of life. A business owner must pay for products, tools, materials, sometimes employee wages, electricity, insurance, among other things. All of these things cost money, and pricing incrementally increases through the years. The business owner must keep up with this reality and raise their prices accordingly. Be honest, not apologetic, with your clients about the price increase. Aside from losing some clients, who probably were not a great fit for your business, the upside is the perceived value of what you offer goes up and will attract new clients. Increasing rates can increase appeal.

Raising prices is a part of business and a pivotal component to a growing, flourishing enterprise.

business Summer Boom

Summer is almost here, and everyone is returning to a somewhat “pre-pandemic normal.” Now is the perfect time to make sure that you and your business are in the proper position to reopen again! Check out these ideas on how to prepare for what I like to call the Summertime Boom!

SPREAD THE WORD Now that you are back into the swing of things let all of your clients know. This can be as simple as sending out an email blast and posting to social media. Don’t forget to let them know about the things you are doing to keep yourself and your establishment safe and clean. It may be a good idea to post on your website any new policies and procedures you have in place, including staggered appointment times, limited seating in the waiting room, etc.

DUST OFF YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY If you don’t already have a marketing strategy, be sure to establish one. Remember, you don’t have to do every marketing tactic, all at the same time. Choose 1 or 2 marketing strategies and crush it out! If your marketing strategy is email, be sure to ramp up your email marketing communications. If your marketing strategy is social media, be sure to start posting more often. Another great way to get the word out about your reopening is to partner with local businesses and cross-promote. Place your business cards on the counters of local businesses and send out postcards to the community.

GET FRESH! Does your website need a refresh? Or maybe your spa needs to be updated. Take this time to update your website

with your new service offerings, policies, photos, and more. Clients will be happy to see you and are waiting to see what’s new, fun, and exciting within your business.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE STOCKED If you aren’t selling retail, you should start. For most beauty businesses, retail helps to increase your bottom line. Start by retailing skincare products used in the treatment room. Try retailing fun summer items like hydrating masks and lip balms. Ways to increase retail sales include sampling, specials, and bundling. You can also increase your retail sales by setting up impulse buys at the front desk. You can have your front desk person suggest these items as your guests are checking out.

THROW A WELCOMING EVENT We have all been in the house for a year. Have you thought about throwing a “welcome back” event? But instead of a gathering, you can run a special deal to welcome back old and new clients. If you choose to have a reopening event, try to stagger your event times to ensure there is ample space to maintain social distancing guidelines.

BEHIND THE SPA DOOR With Taralyn Freda, Owner, Esthetician, and Integrative Health Coach at Nirvana Health and Beauty in Philadelphia, PA What inspired you to open Nirvana Spa? For many years, I dreamed of opening my own business. To have a space to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere that I could give my clients the best possible experience. Working at the top spa in the city with a hectic schedule left little time for much else, let alone starting a new business. In comes the pandemic and huge layoffs, and I found myself at home with ample time for deep reflection and meditation. I decided to enroll at the Institute for Integrative

Nutrition to become a health coach. With the combination of both, I could help clients have radiance inside and out. After sharing the idea with a handful of coworkers, they agreed to come with me, and Nirvana was born.

How was it opening a spa midpandemic, and what has your first year been like? Well, our family thought my husband and I were not thinking straight! Considering we incorporated in June and opened our doors in August, not only amidst the pandemic but a multitude of civil unrest, most would have agreed with them! With any new business, there is nervousness, and their commentary definitely increased it. Luckily, the overwhelming feeling that we were on the right track calmed us, and the support from friends and neighbors throughout the buildout process definitely reassured us further. We were also able to bring a medical director aboard to get a medspa classification which helped ensure we were on the right path. Our first year has been amazing. We feel so blessed to have the support and patronage from friends, family, and other neighborhood businesses. We were featured in a local magazine and even on a local TV station's morning show.

How can you define the concept of your spa? What makes it unique? Nirvana Health and Beauty is unique because of several factors. For starters, we are located in an area of Philadelphia known for being the home of many of the city's artists and musicians in a boutique-style building over 100 years old, "Industrial chic" at its best! Nirvana is full of positive energy where no one is ever judged by who they are or how they look, a warm, inviting space to come and relax. We pride ourselves on overall health, so my health coaching and medically directed protocol are important. We want to ensure that our clients' beauty starts

on the inside. We have also decided to bring in lasers and RF Microneedling in 2021, and so far, that has been very exciting. We feel that this is another way we are uniquely positioned. We offer advanced services you traditionally get in a medspa in a relaxing, calming atmosphere, making us a wellness medspa different from the rest.

What are your most popular treatments? Our facials and massages are all customizable, so within that framework, we get many requests for cupping, gua sha, LightStim LED light therapy, microcurrents, and customized masks. We have added a CBD massage and a pumpkin enzyme facial, which have also been very popular.

How many employees do you have, and what are their specialties? There are a total of ten employees, plus my husband and me. We have two girls that help upfront with reception. We have one Chinese herbalist that focuses on acupuncture. There are four massage therapists with a wide range of skills, from reiki to traditional sports massage. Because our massages are customizable, we like the girls to have a wide range of specialties. We also have two estheticians besides me on board who have a spa background. Our overall spa direction is handled by myself, and my husband handles the marketing and management of the back office.

What daily challenges do you encounter in your position? For me, it's been juggling the responsibilities of being a new owner, an esthetician, and the social media coordinator. We recently hired a social media coordinator to oversee that all. Recently I have been working six days a week in the treatment room due to one esthetician being out on maternity leave, so with that and all the spa management and keeping up with inventory and supplies, it has been quite stressful. I try to take some time for myself and meditate when I can. I try to keep a clear mind and stay positive.

What are the most important lessons you have learned from failures or challenges that you can share with others in your career path? I learned that it's important to follow your intuition and do what's best for you. And no matter what is going on, stay positive. Negative energy will bring you down.

What advice would you give to someone who would like to open a spa? Have a plan of what you would like, put together a business plan and make sure you have the funds or a loan ready. And make sure you find the right location. It takes a lot of time and risk, but it will all work out if you do it right.

What is your hiring process? Luckily for us, most of the girls worked with me in a previous life, so I knew them well. But, for any new hire, the first thing that would get them in the door would be a great attitude. We start there then we look at their body of work. If it is in line with our goals, we have them come in to interview, including a service to their department's head. From there, it is usually an easy decision.

with Grace Schindler from Radiant Grace Beauty in Miami, FL What inspired you to become an esthetician? My own skincare struggles brought me to esthetics. I have struggled with chronic eczema beginning as a child, which caused me to seek ways to treat my skin since I was very young. I used to go to the library and get books about skin and make my own home remedies and seek to treat my skin from the inside out using holistic treatments. I was constantly prescribed steroid creams to treat my eczema, but I continued to search for alternatives. As I got older, my interest grew to makeup and skincare, starting my first 3 step regimen when I was around 11. I remember saving money working my retail job to get my first facial when I was 16. I thought it was heavenly and I got up from the table feeling transformed! A couple years later, one of my girlfriends worked at a local salon and spa and suggested I become an Esthetician! I didn't even know what that job title meant! I toured the Aveda School in the area I lived in and signed up for beauty school on the spot. The rest is history! That was in 2007. My passion for skincare became my career and I continue to grow in interest and experience in this ever changing field!

What is your skincare philosophy? I believe in treating your skin with active ingredients and using your body to heal itself. I don't use the term “anti-aging”, instead I prefer “age well”. We are all aging every day, so why not be the happiest, healthiest versions of ourselves

in a non invasive, more holistic, loving way? I want all my Radiant Beauties to feel like the best version of themselves and for more self love and acceptance in the beauty industry.

What treatments do you offer? Many different types of facials, including a chakra balancing crystal facial and a Hydro Facial, Dermaplaning, Microchanneling, Radiofrequency treatments using the Beauty Sandwich (copyright) technique, Reiki, Eyebrow and Lip waxing, Facial Peels, and Lash lifts and tints.

What sets your brand apart from others? My whole brand was created to make a space for my clients for not only nurturing outer beauty, but a place for cultivating inner beauty; integrating beauty and wellness. I believe I am unique because I focus on connecting to every client on a spiritual and energetic level with my intention first and foremost for inner healing. Then, I focus on the skin and the health of my client’s skin, with the goal of helping them achieve their dream skin!

Tell us about your spa’s most popular treatment: Right now the most popular treatment I’ve been doing is the Procell Microchanneling. Microchanneling is a cosmetic procedure that consists of tiny punctures in the top layers of the skin, which can be referred to as “channels” for product penetration. The tap-

ping technique combined with the nano sized, stainless steel needles make this procedure safe for all skin types and most conditions. The process of creating micro injuries stimulates the body’s wound healing response, increasing cell turnover, collagen and elastin production. The result will repair skin from the inside out- including acne, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, sagging skin and pore size.

What business advice would you give to another esthetician just starting out? Know that this career is a journey! Continue to learn about new products, devices, machines, technology, take online courses, go to skincare shows, learn from a mentor, and don't forget how much experience teaches! I learned so much solely through my experience over the years.

What are some challenges you have faced and how do you overcome them? I have worked at all different types of spas over the years, some which we had to go out and find clients through ads and giving lots of discounts, and others that were more established and brought in regular clientele. Mainly working commission based, there were times when I would do really good based on the season and location of the spa, and other times when money was really tight. I even took a second job as a server for a while to save up before I moved to Florida. I was a young esthetician, starting at 19 years old and I struggled with acne in my early 20’s. All of that taught me so much to help me become the Esthetician I am today and start my own business when the time was right! I am grateful for it all because there is so much beauty in the struggle when you get through to the other side. It always passes. Remember that.

Bikini Ready Guide

Waxing: Before & Aftercare Share these hair removal tips with your clients this Summer by Tami Blake Bikini season is right around the corner, and Brazilian sugaring and waxing are the most sought-after service by clients. It’s our job as estheticians to help our clients look and feel their best when the sun comes out. But it’s not just up to us—a smooth epilation, via sugaring or waxing, also depends on how well our clients care for their skin before and after appointments. While we can’t control what happens outside of the treatment room, we can do our best to share the tips and tricks that make us so good at what we do (and keeps our clients coming back for more).

Bikini Ready Guide

Whether you’re an avid waxer or you’ve dipped your toes into the world of sugaring, the rules for pre-and post-hair removal remain the same. And when it comes to your clients, it’s all about maintaining consistency, providing education, delivering results, and building trust. Don’t know where to start? Offer up these tried-and-true hair removal tips next time your clients need a refresher on how to get silky smooth skin before hitting the beach.

PRE-TREATMENT PREP Practice good personal hygiene. It’s important for clients to bathe and freshen up before they arrive, so their skin is clean for their wax or sugaring sesh. They should hold off on the skincare routine, though—it’s best to refrain from applying lotions, creams, tanning products, or even deodorant before your appointment. Let it grow out. We know it can be challenging for clients to let their hair grow out in between treatments. After all, the goal is to get rid of their hair, not let it grow wild. No matter how uncomfortable it might be, clients who get waxed or sugared regularly should allow their hair to grow out for a couple of weeks. If they have been shaving between appointments, they’ll need to let their hair grow a minimum of 1/16 inch for sugaring or ¼ inch for waxing to get the best results.

skin and preps the area for even hair removal. Stay calm, cool, and hydrated. It’s only natural that some clients will be anxious before their treatment, so it’s always a good idea to have them wear comfy clothes and drink plenty of water. They should also try to stay cool, so make sure they haven’t been to the tanning bed, hot tub, or sauna before their appointment. If they are worried about pain, it’s perfectly fine for them to take a couple of Advil or ibuprofen 20 minutes before they arrive.

POST-TREATMENT CARE Soothe the skin. Everyone reacts differently to waxing and sugaring, so some clients might experience more pain than others. For clients with heightened sensitivity, recommend a cold compress to soothe the skin, and aloebased soothing serum or hydrocortisone cream (for extreme situations) to reduce redness and irritation. Avoid heat. One of the most important things clients should keep in mind after hair removal is to avoid heat for at least 48 hours after their appointment. This means no tanning, sunbathing, hot tubbing, or using a sauna, as heat and sun exposure can burn and irritate the newly exposed skin. To avoid further sensitivity, they should also refrain from taking a hot bath or exercising for two hours after their treatment.

Keep the area clean. Waxing and sugaring cause temporary enlargement of hair follicles, which can allow bacteria to permeate the skin. Clients should do their best to keep the area clean (without scrubbing it too much) to prevent infections. Sometimes infections do happen, and in that case, clients should have a doctor evaluate the problem as soon as possible. Be diligent about maintenance. You should offer a selection of exfoliating serums, ingrown hair balms, and mild sugar scrubs to help your clients maintain their results, treat breakouts, and eliminate ingrown hair and dry skin. When in doubt, sugar (or wax), wait, exfoliate, repeat! Send your clients home with literature or a post-treatment email to get them on the right track. By educating your clients and providing quality botanical-based home care products, you’ll ensure they maintain their smooth results between appointments and get the most out of every treatment.

Tami Blake is the founder and CEO of Sweet & True Sugaring and Free + True Skincare. As a licensed esthetician and cosmetics formulator, Tami is passionate about formulating holistic skincare and ingestibles using natural and botanical ingredients.

Exfoliate. If there’s a golden rule of hair removal, exfoliating daily is a must. Clients should gently scrub the area with clean machine washable exfoliating gloves, gentle sugar scrubs, or a chemical exfoliant containing AHA to slough off dead skin and keep the follicles clear as the hair grows back. As a general rule, it is best to stay away from coarse scrubs (they can cause irritation), washcloths (those don’t do enough), and poof ball loofahs (which are known for harboring bacteria and infecting pores). When done correctly, exfoliating helps to remove dead LNEonline.com

Smooth Summer Waxing How to treat and prevent ingrown hair by Normajean Fusco

Bikini Ready Guide

We have all experienced ingrown hairs either on ourselves or our clients. These unsightly bumps appear when the hair grows back down or sideways into the skin. Ingrown hairs can be caused by dead skin cells building on the skin's surface, hot water, non-breathable tight-fitting, or elasticized clothing. Genetics and body chemistry always plays a part in our skin and hair but regardless of coarse, straight, fine, and curled, all hair begins at an angle that contours to the body shape. When hair is broken and snaps back into the follicle wall, it can just stay there. Telogen hair might not shed before a new hair is coming up in the area, causing ingrown hairs as well. The skin surface could have been callused by caustic peels, abrasions, or pulling the hair manually in the same direction of growth. If aggravated by opening the skin surface area, sebaceous oil build-up will cause a raised bump. When debris or outside pollution enters the follicle, it can create infected pustules, which must be treated with a non-clogging antibacterial. These bumps can be inflamed, painful, and itchy. A few ingrown hairs can be expected but keeping an eye out for inflamed, infected areas is essential. If opened, abraded, or scratched, an infection can spread and require medical treatment.

TAKING CARE OF INGROWN HAIRS Spa and salon professionals can help clients' rid the area of ingrown hairs by having them take soaking baths or apply warm compresses to the affected area and gently exfoliate (not scratch or abrade). This helps remove dead skin cells, so the hair is more likely to come through. An antibacterial moisturizing lotion should be applied to "damp" skin. This will continue to help the hair surface and avoid infection of the follicle. You can also help your client by carefully extracting the hair and bulb in

the opposite direction of growth and having them apply an over-the-counter antiseptic lotion. Using a germ-killing and moisturizing cream daily will help clear the skin of old ingrown hairs and prevent them from occurring in the future.

TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR CLIENTS SKIN CLEAR OF INGROWN HAIRS Use a hair removal that removes the entire hair. If a hair is broken, it will be more prone to grow back under the surface skin. If your client shaves, make sure they shave carefully, paying attention to the hair growth direction. Always have your client pre soften and moisturize the area with an antibacterial lotion even under shaving cream, and remind them never to pick or remove the ingrown hairs. This can lead to infection or scarring.

STOP ALL HAIR REMOVAL UNTIL THINGS CLEAR UP If your client hasn't been taking care of their skin correctly and has many ingrown hairs, it is recommended that they stop all hair removal until they can get the issue under control. Once the ingrown hair problem has been remedied, then educate on proper hair removal techniques, hair removal services, and proper aftercare.

Normajean Fusco founded Equibal Labs, which manufactures a professional line of beauty products featuring Nufree, the only self-preserving antimicrobial, antibacterial hair-removal process in the world. Considered the gold standard, it totally eliminates the problems associated with waxes, sugars, and at-home hair removal treatments. Equibal also produces finipil an FDA-registered antiseptic. Finipil is used after hair removal to kill 99.999% of germs, prevent ingrown hairs, bumps and irritation. It also can be used anywhere an antiseptic is needed!

Personalized Wellness Astrology and tarot services at the spa by Monique Blake

50

June2021

LNEonline.com

Year after year, organizations like the Global Wellness Institute share trends about the steady growing wellness movement. Twenty-twenty, however, was the pivotal moment that catapulted this conversation. With the pandemic, wellness instantly graduated from a movement to a must-have. Overnight, it became non-negotiable as people searched for services that catered to their reinvigorated commitment to health and wellbeing. Spas have been one of the business sectors most impacted by COVID. Our high touch industry shut down at a time when the urgency for its services skyrocketed. As an industry, we seek socially safe offerings to support our guests with their deep personal needs. As a former Red Door National Training Director, I was always on the lookout for unique ways to increase revenue and expand the guest experience. Ancient modalities like astrology and tarot can fill the gap with a fresh approach to personalized services. While personalization is not a new concept, we often substitute ‘customization’ for ‘personalization’ in the spa setting. For example, guests are offered the choice between three essential oils or a choice between a massage oil vs. a cream. This customization is a lovely touch. Nevertheless, it leaves open an untapped potential that some spas are beginning to capitalize on. Renowned resorts like Miraval and Mii Amo have had mindfulness options on their menus for some time. As astrology and tarot continue to become more mainstream, they are now beginning to show up on Day Spa menus and hotel programs and events.

ASTROLOGY AND TAROT With the mainstream acceptance of yoga modalities, there has been an increased interest in other ancient systems such as astrology and tarot. According to a February 2021 BBC article, “Why is Astrology so Popular? ‘google trend searches for astrology hit a five-year peak in 2020.’

Additionally, a 2018 Pew research study found that almost a third of Americans believe in astrology, and 43% embrace New Age beliefs like tarot and psychics. Women, ages 25-60, are the primary demographic and they are twice as likely as men to partake in spiritual readings. This growing market is expected to hit a $2.4B mark by 2024. As life becomes more complex and people are accordingly more anxious and worried about the direction to take, they earnestly seek self-improvement strategies that provide greater insight into their life’s path and purpose. Astrology and tarot both offer consumers profound solutions personalized to their specific needs.

ASTROLOGY SERVICES In preparation for a session, an astrologer casts a natal or birth chart using the client’s birthday month, day, year, place (city, state/country), and time of birth. This information gives a snapshot of the heavens at the moment of birth, providing in-depth, personalized guidance far beyond the newspaper daily horoscope section. One of my favorite astrologers describes the birth chart as a ‘map of the psyche’. This multilayered tool can be used to bring clarity to our personality traits, strengths, and areas of growth and support us with decisions in the present moment and bring awareness to past actions and life events. It is ideal for guests who seek a greater understanding of their purpose to explore key areas of life such as relationships, career, finances, and love.

TAROT SESSIONS A tarot reading uses a 78-card deck to help reveal deeply hidden subconscious patterns and insight on how to navigate our day-to-day life. Guests can bring a specific question to explore or ask the deck for guidance. Unlike astrology, there is no specific information required from the guest beforehand. What are the pros and cons of of-

fering astrology and tarot as a part of your spa’s revenue stream?

PROS • Readings can be done in a private space outside of a treatment room, for example, converting an under-utilized spa café area or covered outside the venue or a private nook, without cannibalizing the revenue of treatment rooms. • Readings can be done via a spa’s Zoom account. Spas can remain in charge of their guest list by sending links to the guest and practitioner. • Astrology and Tarot sessions lend themselves to ongoing series and return bookings as people continue to seek answers to different situations in life.

regular guest marketing outreach. The benefits of offering astrology and tarot sessions far outweigh the challenges. They promise both an increase in a spa’s revenue potential and an expanded guest wellness experience. A recent tarot event at a 5-star luxury brand confirmed how many more people are now open to these ancient wisdoms. Not only were my appointment slots fully booked, but the guest profiles were very diverse.. I had a reading with a father and his teenage son, a retired corporate president and his wife, as well as a religious Mom and her daughter. When spas embrace the true power of personalization, it will attract guests who desire confirmation of their uniqueness, a more profound clarity of their

Summertime Lash Care

How to lash and care for lashes in the warmer months by Erin Soletski

In the summertime, your clients are swimming, sweating, applying sunscreen, and spending more time outdoors. It’s the most fun time of the year, but it can also be the worst time of year for lash extension retention! We’re breaking down the key factors that impact how long your clients’ lashes last and how you can adjust your process to account for these seasonal effects.

How does summer weather affect lashing? Recall that cyanoacrylate is the base ingredient in lash adhesives. Cyanoacrylate is finicky and strongly impacted by changes in temperature and humidity levels. As temperature and humidity increase, adhesives will work faster. In the summer, if left unregulated, high humidity often means that adhesives set before the extension or fan can be placed on the natural lash. If this happens, it will appear that lashes are adhering perfectly, but when you brush them, a large number come right off. Brush frequently to check for this.

How can I optimize my lash studio during the summer? If humidity levels in your studio rise during the summer, there are a few actions you can take. First, reduce moisture in the air by adding a dehumidifier or cranking the air conditioning. If this isn’t enough, consider switching to a slower adhesive, or one specifically formulated for use in your higher humidity level. Keep an eye on your glue dot as well – you’ll likely want to replace it more frequently (approximately every 10-15 minutes) as the increased moisture will cause it to grow tacky more quickly.

lash shampoo daily. In addition to washing at night, they’ll want to wash any time they complete a heavy workout or go for a swim in a pool or ocean to remove salt and other chemicals that can affect the adhesive’s bond. They should brush with a spoolie twice a day (once in the morning, once at night) to detangle and remove extensions that have shed. Telling clients — especially long-standing ones — that they need to “clean more” can be a delicate topic. Use the change in seasons to ease into the conversation (e.g., “did you know that great retention in the summer requires a bit more attention at home?”) and then ask them about their usual endof-day routine:

Encouraging your client to walk you through their cleansing process can be eye-opening. If they aren’t cleaning regularly, it’ll become apparent as they try to describe their process. If they do wash regularly, you’ll be able to offer suggestions to make their process even more effective. With some minor adjustments to the lashing process and aftercare, your clients can enjoy their lashes all summer long!

What should clients do in the summer to help their retention? The burden of ensuring superior retention isn’t just on lash artists — but the burden of giving clients the information and tools they need to do their part is. This is even more important in the summer. After a long day at the beach or out in the sun, oils, makeup, and sweat have worked their way into the lash line. If left untouched, these residues can break down the bond of the adhesive and lead to poor retention. To start, make sure your clients are aware that lashes should be cleaned daily!
